James 3 What's Down in the Well, Comes up in the Bucket. Don't Let it be Poison.

James Chapter 3

Maurice Switzer said, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.” That phrase echoes Proverb 17:28.

“Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”

I cannot tell you how many times my yap has not only proven me to be foolish, but mean, jealous, petty, and bitter. If only I would control my tongue, I would stop showing the world the worst of me. Now that I blog and through this blog teach people, and now that I mentor some, it is more important than ever that I use the filter God gave me called a brain and exercise the spiritual fruit of love called self-control.

In the third chapter of James, James addressed the same issue.  Verses 1-2 read,

“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.”

Believer, whether you set out to teach others or not, you do teach. You follow Christ and the world watches, and they judge. They judge you harshly because you claim Christ, they judge the pastors, the teachers, and church leaders even more severely. As a Christian every negative act you perform, and every negative word you speak is amplified by them so they can justify their non-belief. You and I have a responsibility to speak and act wisely so that what we do and say will not cause others to stumble or reject Jesus.

The tongue is small but powerful. Our words can build or destroy. Our words can encourage, inspire, augment, and increase. But they can more easily discourage, hurt, cut, and diminish. I have been on the receiving end of words that influenced me not to try, or hurt me deeply. I have been the speaker of those terrible words as well. James described the power of words with a few metaphors. He compared the ability to control our tongues to the bit of a horse. When a bit is placed in a horse’s mouth, the rider controls the entire animal. He also likened it to a ship’s rudder, the whole vessel is steered by the small part. We use the tongue to decide which direction we will take a conversation, a lesson, a day, and even a life.

James also compared the control of the tongue to a forest fire.  In 2012 wildfires burned 9,326,238 acres, killed 11 people, and cost millions of dollars in damage. Many wildfires are started with something as small as a dropped cigarette. (CNN, 2014). That is immense damage from one little spark. Our words are that formidable. I can tell you stories of what negative words have done to me. I can share stories of kids being teased so ruthlessly that they committed suicide. I watched a program about a woman driven to such depths of depression from a co-worker’s relentless mocking that she got a gun and shot up a grocery store killing the man who joked with her every day. (Poole, 2015). Words are potent. More potent than we who are careless with them want to think.

Verses 6-8 read,

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”

No human being can tame the evil poison tongue. Does that mean we don’t bother? We just say whatever comes to mind whenever we think it? Absolutely not. No human can tame it. But we do not rely on our human nature for our behavior, we rely on the Holy Spirit. He is conforming us to the image of Christ and the consequence of that transformation is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.[1] The fruit of our human nature is sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, and debauchery. [2] When we follow our flesh we sin, we speak without love and self-control, we let bitterness take root and grow and sprout out of our mouths causing the terrible damage it will. But with the Holy Spirit our mouth should spring out the fruit consistent with His love. Verses 9-12 read,

“With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.”

The old saying goes, “What’s down in the well, comes up in the bucket.” And it is true. Your mouth speaks what is in your heart and spirit. If the Spirit is there, unquenched and working, then we will glorify the Lord. If we have quenched Him, then our human nature will speak. In Matthew 12:34-36 Jesus said,

“You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

I cannot tell you how many careless words I have spoken. The amount of damage I have done with my vile tongue is incalculable. We must be vigilant to exercise love and self-control over the weapon of our mouths. We have to be conscientious and choose not to exercise the fruit of the flesh. We have to choose to glorify Christ. Verses 13-18 read,

“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Self-control is just as important to the command to love another as any other fruit of the Spirit. It is the characteristic that lords over how we choose to behave. It is the one I too often hear excuses against and sometimes out of my own mouth. “You know how I am!” or likewise. The world may know how you are, but do they know how God is? Do they see Him when they interact with you? They should. We are supposed to exemplify Christ, for the world and for one another. I challenge you to exercise the self-control given to you by the Spirit, and choose to use your words to build, teach, encourage, inspire, and in other ways, love.

James 2:14-26 Faith Without Proof is Worthless

James Chapter 2 Verses 14-26

Some might try to use these verses in James to say the Bible contradicts itself. That these verses contradict that salvation is a gift of God by grace through Jesus Christ. Scripture makes it clear that salvation is through grace. Grace cannot be earned, otherwise it would not be grace. James is not saying that salvation is by works, he had just finished saying that trying to keep the law at all makes one accountable to the whole law and that we are to speak and act as those judged by the law of liberty. We are supposed to take seriously Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. (James 2:8-13).

Verse 14 reads,

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?”

Does James really mean faith doesn’t save us? Absolutely not. Ephesians 2:8-9 is very clear.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Our works do not save us. What James is saying is that our works demonstrate our faith. Real faith, just like real love is tangible. It is demonstrated by actions. He uses the example of meeting someone in need. Faith as lip service doesn’t do anything for the person. But faith proven by meeting their needs glorifies God to them. Verses 15-17 say,

“If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Our actions do not save us, our actions reveal our spirits. Our behavior says, we belong to God, we believe He will meet every one of our needs, and that we want what God wants. It is through love and faith in action that people will see God and know we belong to Him.

How can we show someone our faith without showing them how we have stepped out in faith? I can say to you all day, “I believe in God. I follow Jesus. I am filled with the Spirit.” But without action, there is no proof. I may as well tell you, “I believe in Santa Claus. Buddy the Elf is my mentor, and putting maple syrup in coffee will bring you a happy life.” Just speaking my faith sounds just as ludicrous to the world. Verses 18-19 put it this way,

“But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”

How do we know Abraham had faith? Because he declared it or because he proved it by nearly sacrificing Isaac? He knew God would save Isaac and he obeyed the Lord in that faith. If Rahab had said to the spies in Jericho, “I hope you get out safely! I’m on your side”, but hadn’t hidden them and allowed them to escape her faith would have been worthless. (Verses 20-25).

Faith does no one any good if it is not expressed through action. It is by the way we live our lives that people see the power of God. Faith enables someone to give the only money she has to buy a meal for a hungry family. They see the love of God expressed, He is glorified. She knows that God will provide her with her needs even though she no longer has money. That is faith exhibited. To say, “I have faith that God provides all my needs” but then not give her coat to the cold and homeless woman on the corner shows she doesn’t really believe God will take care of her.

God will not leave you high and dry. He wants you to do good works for people. He will provide everything you need to be charitable. 2 Corinthians 9:8-12 says it this way,

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9 As it is written,

“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.”

Do you believe in God? Good on ya! So do demons. But demons at least exhibit their faith through their fear of the LORD. Is your belief manifested in action? Do people see your faith? Do people receive the fruits of your love? I challenge you today to make your faith plain to people. Ask the Lord for opportunities to express His love through your faith today. Take those opportunities regardless of the cost. God will give you everything you need to be a doer of the word. It may not be financial or material, it may be in using your gifts, or abstaining from something. Whatever it is, be faithful and do what it is God has granted you to do.

James 2:1-13 Love Your Neighbors Without Partiality

James Chapter 2 Verses 1-13

I think it is common to judge people based on appearances. One looks at a man wearing an expensive suit and carrying a brief case and judges that he is likely a wealthy businessman. We tell others a little about ourselves by the way we dress. We express interests, finances, and even confidence by the way we present ourselves.

But if we let the judgment affect the way we think about or treat the other person, then we are sinning. Treating a person poorly or well based on our impression is prejudice. Bias leads nowhere good. James had something to say about the subject as well. Verses 1-4 read,

“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in,3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?”

It is too easy to see a person, assume he is affluent and treat him a bit better than everyone else. It is almost natural to offer him greater respect than others. It is just as easy to discount the poor man, to not pay him much attention, and in that way disrespect him. In God’s eyes, they are both worthy of the same respect. We are supposed to love our neighbor as ourselves, not some, but all. We are to show everyone that same favor.

Consider this as well. We are supposed to build one another up, encourage each other, and meet each other’s needs. Chances are the rich man has an easier life than the poor man. It was probably easier for him to get to church, his needs are not so hard to meet. Faith is easy for him since he has probably had fewer struggles. Although we can’t and shouldn’t assume that. But the poor man almost certainly has had many struggles, has a difficult time getting his needs met, and his faith is exercised much more often than that of many of us. He really deserves our admiration. Both men deserve equal treatment. If favoritism were going to be showed at all, it might be just to offer the respect and a respite for the poor man so that he is brought up to the same level as the rich man. What has the rich man ever done to earn our deference? The wealthy, especially the very wealthy who had few trials in their lives do not have to lean on God and they have a hard time making Jesus their Lord. Making Jesus his Master means putting money, power, and reputation out of his heart. Jesus said it is really hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. (Matthew 19:22-24). He needs our love in order to be able to do that. Verses 5-7 put it like this,

“Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?”

We are supposed to love everyone without bias, just like God does. God gave Peter a vision to teach him that lesson. In Acts 10:34-35 Peter said, “…Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.  As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),”

We are supposed to go out of our way to show esteem for one another. Romans 12:9-13 reads,

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.”

Showing partiality regardless which way it goes, is ungodly and therefore sinful. James doesn’t try and sweeten his message. It is plain that it is sin. It goes against the second of the commands Jesus told us was the crux of the entire law. Verses 8-9 say,

“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”

James wasn’t kidding around. Treating some well and others inadequately is sin. It is also often done in order to look good. Treating the congressman like a king can get us some points in the world. But treating the homeless man like a king doesn’t get us any advantages. If we are trying to gain benefits by our actions that is bad news. Our actions are meant to be expressions of our faith and love. God loves everyone, not just the rich, or only the poor, or merely the Jew, or only the Greek. Gaining rewards by our deeds is an attempt to keep the law. Looking good to the world is trying to keep the law. Verses 10-11 read,

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.”

Forget about how you look to the world when it comes to loving your neighbor. Love him as God loves him, not because he is a well-to-do influential man, but because he is a man created by and loved by God. We were saved by grace. We have been showered with mercy. We have grace and mercy to spare. We are free to do it. God wants a relationship with both the destitute and prosperous. He wants the priest and the prostitute to know Him. We are free to show love to all. We don’t have to worry about anyone defiling our buildings with their sin. We do not have to be concerned with anyone corrupting our temples or our souls because Jesus blood sanctified us. We don’t have to kowtow to money because we know God provides for us.

Verses 12-13 say,

“So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

So my fellow believers and followers of our King and Lord Jesus, I encourage you today to examine yourself and see if you are showing partiality in your dealings with people. Are you out doing yourself and others in order to show honor to one another? I exhort you to go out of your way and love all your neighbors, regardless of appearance, regardless of bank account, and regardless of any of our perceptions.

James 1:9-18 How Do You Stay Faithful Through the Hard Times?

1/28/2015

James Chapter 1 Verses 9-18

Life on this earth is difficult but it is also temporary. All the pursuits to gratify our cravings and create a pleasing life are temporary. Only God, His Love, His Word, and the life He gives are forever. The lost look at this current life as being all there is and so they seek fulfillment in earthly things. But those of us whom God calls His children, seek Him first and live with the knowledge of eternal life. Verses 9-11 reads,

“Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.”

Life is hard. Believers pursue the will of God and rejoice in Him. But the world seek money and other amusements to make them happy. They go through hard times and do what they can to get out of them. The poor suffer through them with complaints and anger. The rich buy their way out. Many turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain and fool themselves.

But believers submit to God’s sovereignty and go through trials with joy because they know that God is good. And God recognizes that faith, He rewards it. Verse 12 says it this way,

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

Love for God is expressed in action. We love God by serving the people around us, by loving our fellow believers and living out God’s will. As children of God, He has given us His Spirit. The Spirit is the nature and life of God. He gives us the faith to remain steadfast, steady and constant just as He is steady and constant. God is never-changing. He is steadfast and because He has given us His Spirit, we too can be. We have the hope of the promises of eternity.

But we are also human and imperfect. God’s Spirit, His nature is within us but so is our flesh nature. And so we will fall short sometimes. We do sin. The world likes to blame everything and everyone else for their sin. They especially blame God. If God had not made them poor, or rich, or orphans, or the middle child of many, or whatever they wouldn’t have sinned. People blame circumstances for their sin. They blame the broken world and call it god. But God is there to restore what is broken. Jesus is the way the truth and the life and He brings peace and healing.[1]

Even Christians like to blame God for their suffering and sin, saying God sent them this temptation to test them, or God sent them this trial to teach them. We have free will. We have the liberty to make choices and sometimes we choose wrong. Sometimes we let the desires of our flesh quench the faith and love of the Spirit. God doesn’t tempt people. He wants good things for us. He wants us to be conformed to Christ’s image. He wants to have a close and pure relationship with each and every child on this earth. God is light. He is good. In Him there is no darkness, no sin, and no evil.[2] God would never lead us to do wrong, ever. Verses 13-15 read,

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

The bad stuff comes from the brokenness of this world. It comes from sin. When we are tempted it is because we have put our efforts into our fleshly desires instead of into loving God first with our hearts, minds, souls, and strength. God isn’t the source of evil. He is not the source of pain. People have been deceived and that lie keeps them from knowing God. God is the source of good. He is Love, Light, and Peace. [3] Verses 16-18 say,

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

He is never-changing. God is steadfast in everything including His love for us. He has always been the same and will always be the same. He doesn’t want us to trip up and fail. He is with is through good times and bad. It is attempting to fix our problems without God that we stumble and fall. Hebrews 13:5-6 read,

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
    I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

How do we stay steadfast through trials? We remember who God is. We remember He wants good for us not bad. He wants us everyone to be saved. We exercise faith because we know God is light, love, and peace.

The greatest of all the blessings and good things God gives us is peace with Him through Jesus. He brought us to it by His the word of truth, His will manifested in actuality, Jesus Christ. And we are saved not so we can be the only ones but so we can share the truth and love of God with everyone, so that others will come after us and know God too.

James 1:1-8 Celebrate and Be Glad When You Face Trials

1/27/2015

James Chapter 1 Verses 1-8

Today we begin reading the letter written by James to the church dispersed by persecution. His greeting is very short and rather than give qualifiers for himself such as “Apostle” or “Elder” he called himself simply, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Verse 1). It is this role that he encouraged us to take, active humble enduring doers of the word.

Verses 2-4 read,

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

James immediately got to the meat in his letter. He started with a deep and difficult statement. “Count it all joy…when you meet trials.” He didn’t say suffer through it. He didn’t say lament, groan, and complain. He said to count it all joy. He wasn’t talking to people who had barely faced a hard time in their lives. He was talking to people who had left their homes and moved to other countries because of the persecution they had faced. They had seen brothers and sisters jailed, beaten, and killed. They had very likely lost loved ones, careers, and reputations for Jesus. Even after all that they would continue to face trials of various kinds. It is par for the course of Christianity, not if you face trials, but when you do.

How is it that we can count it all joy? How can we embrace the pain or be joyful even through the tears? Because we know that this bad stuff has good results. Because when we exercise our faith it produces steadfastness which is persistence, stability, dedication, loyalty and faith. And when that persistence has its full effect and we are fully devoted and faithful we will lack nothing. James said, “that you may be perfect and complete.”

I know many people in today’s culture consider our spiritual walk to be one of never-ending search, but James said that our trials faced in a godly manner result in completion, that we will lack nothing. We will lack nothing because we will have the faith to ask God to give us whatever we ask for. If we need wisdom, we ask God and He gives it. If we lack joy, mercy, or whichever of Christ’s characteristics it might be, we ask and God will give it to us. He will conform us to the image of Christ. Verses 5-8 read,

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

God gives generously. James says though the child of God doing the asking needs to ask with faith. He didn’t refer here to healings and such. He referred to asking God for our spiritual needs. We have to ask with faith because the way God gives us wisdom, patience, and joy is usually through trials. When we go through those trials with faith, knowing there is a good purpose for us, knowing there is a lesson to learn, and maturity to be gained, we can go through it looking to learn the lesson, develop the trait, and become more Christ-like. But if we go through it without faith, we won’t see the lessons, we won’t receive any of the blessings, gifts, or growth the Father has for us. That is an unstable man, not a steadfast one. He hasn’t yet gained the faith in order to develop the endurance. He doesn’t have the wisdom or discernment to see the goodness that can come out of suffering.

Remember this God allows you to suffer for a reason. He is sovereign. He loves you. He works it all together for good for those who love Him. And that good is your completion, your maturation to be like Jesus. Romans 8:28-29 say it like this,

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

The trials we suffer bring about the traits of Christ in us. James said we are to count it all joy. Paul also said we are to rejoice in our suffering and in the hope of the glory of God. Not only does our suffering produce wholeness in us, but it glorifies God! Romans 5:1-5 says,

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

So Brothers and Sisters, not if you suffer, but when you do, rejoice! Celebrate and be glad because good things are happening. You are being conformed to Christ’s image, you are being made faithful, perseverant, patient, and wise. The joyful manner you live your life and endure your troubles brings glory to God. Pay attention be wise, have faith, and grow through your hardships, and always always praise God and thank Him for being there with you.

3 John Are You Exalting Christ or Yourself?

3 John

This short letter was written from John to Gaius. Its purpose is to commend Gaius and others like him for the hospitality they show to missionaries and get his help to have the church help Demetrius in his work, even though another man Diotrephes is actually working against helping missionaries to the point that he is throwing people out of the church when they do.

This letter shows us another important way to love one another by supporting the work of God done throughout His kingdom. Verses 1-4 read,

“The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.

2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

John addressed Gaius with real affection and showed concern for his total well-being. One just can’t fake genuine love. But John also told Gaius that he had heard about the way Gaius walked in truth. That Gaius and the others lives were a testimony to Christ and glorified Him. Gaius didn’t just act like a Christ follower when he was with the congregation, he imitated Christ wherever and with whomever he was.

Verses 5-8 describe some of the good work being done.

“Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, 6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. 7 For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. 8 Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”

Not everyone is called to go from town to town as missionaries. Not everyone is called to go out to the streets and minister, or be a full-time teacher, pastor, evangelist, or whatever. But we all do our part. We all do what we were called to do as well as supporting the work that others are called to. In the case of missionaries, we support them financially, we give them a place to stay and food to eat while they are with us, and we send them out equipped, refreshed and with all they need. In supporting the each other’s work, we are cohorts in the work. While you may not be living in a slum in a third world country feeding the poor and teaching them about Jesus, when you give supplies, money, letters of encouragement, and prayer you are working alongside those who are.

To hear about the good work our brothers and sisters do in Jesus’ name gives us all joy. If it doesn’t, then you may want to check your pride and self-ambition. It is possible to be in a church, even be a leader of the church and have a self-promoting agenda rather than a Christ glorifying life. It happens without our even knowing it, and it is good to check yourself, have brothers and sisters give you feedback, and of course ask the Spirit to reveal truth to you.

That is what was happening with Diotrephes. He had stopped putting God first and instead put himself first. His position in the church was high enough that he could get people put-out of the congregation. His influence was pretty heavy. His self-ambition was hurting the work of spreading the Gospel and leading people away from the truth. Verses 9-10 read,

“I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. 10 So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.”

As a church we are supposed to be united in truth. We submit to one another in reverence to Christ. We put God first always. Sometimes people don’t even notice when someone has begun to put themselves first. The people of Diotrephes congregation hadn’t noticed. They probably thought they were doing good things by putting people sowing discord out of the church. The thing was it wasn’t those who wanted to support the missionaries sowing discord, it was Diotrephes. When John tried to tell him, he wouldn’t hear it. So John had to turn to Gaius to set it straight.

Are you able to rejoice for your brothers and sisters? Are you able to support the work of the truth? Are you concerned with proving your worth or Christ’s? If someone has come to you with a difficult truth about yourself can you submit and receive it? Or do you get offended and become defensive? Find out who you are putting first. If you can’t even bring yourself to ask your brothers and sisters, or if you do not think you need to ask the Spirit to reveal it to you, then chances are your pride is standing in your way.

Use the wisdom and discernment the Spirit gave you. If someone is delighting in the truth of Jesus and the way of God then you will know if you open your eyes and look with the eyes of God. If someone is speaking wicked nonsense against his brothers, if he is refusing to support God’s work, if he is not submitting to church authority or his brothers and sisters, then you have to confront him with truth in love. John did that for Diotrephes, and Diotrephes proved his evil. Part of loving one another is knowing one another well enough to see the real us and still love.

Verses 11 and 12 read,

“Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true.”

John reminded the church not to follow men, but instead to follow God. We follow Jesus and imitate Him. We imitate those who imitate Jesus by doing good. John sent references for Demetrius so that the church would accept him and support him. They didn’t know Demetrius, but they knew John and they knew He walked in truth and love through Jesus. We do not always know the workers we support, but we know Jesus and we have the Spirit.

Remember loving one another is not just something we say it is how we live. It is by that love that the world sees Jesus. It is by that love that we build each other up and equip one another. It is by that love that we sharpen one another.

2 John 1:4-13 Truth Can Be Salty. Adding Sugar Makes it a Lie.

2 John Chapter 1 Verses 4-13

Verse 4 reads,

“I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father.”

John was delighted to have seen some of the people walking in truth and therefore glorifying God. When they were living their lives they not only represented the elect lady this letter is addressed to whether she is their physical mother or the host of the church, but they also represented their local church, the city, and the entire church, and Jesus Christ. They were representing well.

They were walking in the truth that Jesus is the Son of God who came in the flesh, lived perfectly, died and rose again. They were not swaying from the truth. Their lives were a practice of that fact. John goes on in to encourage the entire church to do the same by obeying God’s central command. The command that Jesus gave us, but that has been the fulcrum of the entire law from the start. We are to love one another. Verses 5-6 read,

“And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.”

It is by loving one another that we glorify Christ, represent Him and the entire church, and let people know the truth. Jesus said it this way in John 13:3-35,

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Remember love is not inactive, it is not mere words, or feelings. Love is concrete. So how do we love one another? How do we best exemplify Christ? We do what Jesus did. We put God first. We put others ahead of ourselves. We remember we are united. We are not separate from one another. 1 Corinthians 11:11-12 say,

“Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.”

We are not supposed to be concerned with our individual needs first but the edification of the church, the teaching of Christ, and the glory of God. It isn’t that we are supposed to forget our own needs, but we need to take care of them ahead of time so that when we gather we can embody the love of Christ and build and encourage one another. Paul used the example of Spiritual gifts to get the point across. He said that Speaking in tongues is a good and it builds the individual, but prophecy is better because it builds the church through revelation of truth and knowledge. (1 Corinthians 14:1-19).

In the book of Ephesians Paul encouraged the church to walk in love, by imitating God and walking as Jesus walked. (Ephesians 5:1-2).  In Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul spells out how to love one another.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Our actions and behavior matters, not in respect to our salvation but in respect to one another and in demonstrating the truth and love of Christ to the world. It is by our behavior, the way we live our lives that we testify to Jesus identity. The world needs to hear and see the truth. They are getting plenty of lies from everywhere. 2 John verses 7-8 read,

“For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.”

With all the deceivers out there, we have to be careful to stay in the truth. We can’t let any lies in. Even the seemingly innocuous myths of scripture that get shared take people away from the Gospel. Jesus is the only way to salvation. The devil hates people and will do whatever it takes to keep as many as possible from the truth. The lies that look like sweet little nuggets of happiness are great at leading people away from Jesus and to death.

Fortune cookie scriptures taken out of context, the salt taken out and sugar added are being fed to the masses. The masses find it easier to believe that God will lift them out of their suffering rather than carry them through it. The multitudes want to hear that God will make them rich, or that good people go to heaven, or any other number of “kitten hang in there” phrases rather than the truth. The truth is no one is good enough to go to heaven. The truth is Jesus is the only way. The truth is the Father loves us enough to discipline us and allow the Spirit to transform us through suffering.

If someone is able to tell the world those feel good slogans instead of the truth then they are not abiding in the truth, and that means that Jesus is not in them. That may seem harsh, but sometimes the truth is not so sweet. Verse 9 says,

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

Associating with the liars who are spoon feeding morsels of tasty accepted sayings is synonymous with joining them. If the world thinks we agree with the frauds then we are saying “yes, chase death down this easy wide path.”  Verses 10-11 put it like this,

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”

When you see people who claim to be followers of Christ sharing fortune cookie encouragement, go ahead and straighten them out. Put the verse back in context, untwist it, put the salt back in. If they acknowledge it, they will repent and stop spreading dangerous lies. If they don’t, then you know they do not have Christ, the Spirit is not in them and they are not the Christian they claim to be but an antichrist. Don’t even let them in for a conversation, debate, or a drink of water. It may not seem like love, but love is in truth. Spreading their propaganda is harmful and therefore not loving at all. When you refuse to take part in the lie, you reveal the truth to them and to all the witnesses. That is love.

John ends this letter with verses 12-13 reiterating and personifying the love the church has for one another.

“Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.”

Love each other in truth. Love each other genuinely and concretely. Love each other through your behavior submitting to Christ by submitting to one another. Love one another by protecting the truth from the distortions of false teachers, false prophets, smiling spreaders of positive vibes, and other antichrists.

2 John 1:1-3 To Love One Another in Truth, One Must Be Part of a Church.

2 John Verses 1-3

I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of a wonderful living church. My brothers and sisters in Christ are there for me through everything I go through, just as I strive to be there for them through their struggles. Because God is in us, when we come together the Spirit is able to minister to each of us in multilayered ways. He does His work from within us as well as through our fellow believers. Iron sharpens Iron.[1] He uses our brothers and sisters to encourage, exhort, teach, comfort, speak, and otherwise love in all the ways that Jesus loves.

Believer, if you are not part of a local church, you are missing out on a great deal of what it means to follow Jesus. You are missing out on chances to mature, glorify, serve, comfort, and love and be loved.

In John’s second epistle John addressed his letter to the elect lady and her children. Many people believe he was writing to a church. I believe this is probably the case, perhaps a woman who hosted a church in her home and the many spiritual children born from God’s love exercised through it, or perhaps some of her physical children who also were believers.

He begins the letter with the address and an encouragement.

“The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.”

John loved this lady and her children in truth. That is He loves her genuinely through the truth of Christ. Not just as a spoken token of affection, but concretely. And John added, not only he loved her that way, but also all of those who know the truth, the actuality of Jesus Christ, God, our Father, and His awesome Holy Spirit.

Why and how could he claim that not only he loved her in just a deep way but also speak for the rest of the believers? Because He knew the same Spirit that abided in him, also resided in the other believers. Because the truth, that same truth I just described, abides in us and will be with us forever. That is God! God abides in us because His truth abides in us.[2] We believe what He says about Himself, because He made us able to understand and believe. Because He is in us, we can and do love all the brothers and sisters in Christ. We recognize each other through the Spirit and we love one another. We love one another not through spoken tokens of affection but in truth, in reality.

Solid love is demonstrated through grace, mercy and peace. God gave them to us in love and we share them with one another through Him.

Grace is receiving something good we do not deserve. Grace is forgiveness and acceptance regardless of doing a single thing to warrant it. If we have received grace, we ought to be graceful toward each other. What right do we have to expect someone to merit our love when we did nothing and could do nothing to earn God’s love?

Not receiving something bad that we do deserve is mercy. God doesn’t condemn us, even though we deserve it. How can we blame and punish one another when God doesn’t condemn us?

Peace is a relationship of unity and harmony, joined together as one. We are at peace with God, through Christ. We are one with Him and we are supposed to be that united with one another. We are one body, one Spirit with one God.

I urge you today, if you do not have brothers and sisters in Christ to share your life with to find a local church and join it. Live fully the life God means for you to live. I exhort you, if you are a member of a local body to love your brothers and sisters in truth, fully, actually and actively. You can’t walk as Jesus walked if you walk alone. Jesus didn’t. God Himself exemplifies this is His Trinity. He is Father, Son, and Spirit.

1 John 5:18-21 The Devil Can't Touch You, But That isn't the Case for the World.

1 John Chapter 5 Verses 18-21

Verse 18 reads

“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”

John says, everyone born of God does not keep on sinning. He said this right after warning us to pray for our brothers who we saw sinning. If a Christian is made aware of the sin they are doing they will stop and repent. It is in that ability to listen to the Spirit and desist sinning that the God protects His children from the devil. We are not under Satan’s power, like the world is. He can’t even touch us. The devil can’t be your excuse.

Take heart in the fact that if you are following Jesus, in fellowship with other believers (Verses 16-17) and listening to the Spirit the devil can’t touch you. It is in the practice of sinning that you invite him in. And John says is you keep sinning after you’ve been made aware of it, then you have not been born of God.

I pity the lost. They think they are free and they even think they are good. But they are deceived. They are bound to the ruler of this world because they won’t bow to the King of kings. They don’t even know. Verse 19 says,

“We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

But we do know! We have power. We are protected from the evil one. That means we can make a difference. We can go to them and be Jesus to them. We can reveal the truth to them and let them choose. But if no one gives them the truth, how will they ever get to choose? The path they are on is horrible and easy. It is leading to eternal damnation.

You and I have eternal life and it is free and wonderful and difficult. We have this awesome gift from our Holy Father. Jesus Christ paid the price because He is the only one who could. The Holy Spirit fills us, teaches and transforms us. Eternal life is awesome in every sense of the word.

Verse 20 reads,

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

We have understanding, we have the truth. The world doesn’t. Their ignorance doesn’t protect them it sends them to hell. You and I have this most amazing gift. We have this beautiful relationship with Almighty God. The world doesn’t have it, they have been duped into thinking they don’t want it.

We have the power to tell them the truth. Will we be attacked when we try and tell them? Absolutely, yes! But the evil one can’t touch us! He has no power over us at all. But he’ll fight tooth and nail to keep his children, whom he hates from becoming God’s children. Don’t fall into hating them or being bitter and defensive through the enemy’s attempts to hold onto them. Love them, be compassionate towards their plight. They are slaves and do not know it.

John ends his letter with verse 21

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

It seems strange, like a disjointed afterthought. But the Holy Spirit doesn’t do disconnected. This warning is important to keeping us away from a practice of sinning. Keeping God our priority is vital to walking in truth. When we go out into the world, idols are everywhere. It is so easy to become enamored of worldly things and let those things take God’s throne. The enemy can’t touch you, but he can and will try anything to get you to stop doing what Jesus did. He will try to get you to love the worldly things so that you don’t love people. He will try to make you as ineffective as possible. Idolatry is one of his favorite weapons.

Believer, you have God living inside you! You have eternal life! You have understanding. You have the truth. You are powerful and protected. You can make a difference.

1 John 5:16-17 Sin that Leads to Death and Sin that Doesn't Lead to Death

1 John Chapter 5 Verses 16-17

Today’s passage is a complex and perplexing one. It is controversial, with people on both sides of some doctrinal argument using it to defend their discord with the church.  I want you to remember I am a lay person. I have no training in theology. But I do have the Spirit of God and I do trust His teaching.

Verses 16-17 read,

“If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.”

Okay, I get that, we are to pray for our brothers and sisters when we see them sinning and God will give them life. But if they are already our brothers and sisters aren’t they already saved? Yes. So what does John mean that God will give him life? If we back up a few verses we read about Jesus giving us eternal life and about overcoming the world and living as a testimony to Him. Eternal life not only as living eternally one day in Heaven, but living for Jesus now filled with the Spirit. It is Jesus who gives us life. He is eternal life. Eternal life is lived differently than the temporary earthly life.  Eternal life is the relationship we enjoy with God. 1 John 1:1-4 explains it this way.

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”

John 5:23-24 says,

“that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

So in my understanding, if we see a brother sinning in a way that does not lead to death, and we ask, God will give him life. God will restore Him and bring him back to a place where he is living victoriously as a witness to the awesome power and love of God. Revelation 2:5 reads,

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.”

Of course that brings up the next question. What is sin that leads to death and sin that doesn’t lead to death?  Living victoriously, walking in the light or following Jesus means we have to confess our sins and repent. Repent doesn’t mean feel bad and keep sinning. It means recognizing, stopping and no longer doing it. It was when the church in Ephesus repented that they could glorify Christ the way they did when they first believed. John didn’t write to them to hide their sins, he said repent. We are not supposed to go around pretending to be perfect. We aren’t. Jesus doesn’t need to restore perfect people. We are to confess our sins to one another. 1 John 1:6-10 reads,

“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

If someone can’t admit to their sin, they can’t repent. If someone wants to keep practicing sin then it is leading to death. They are living like a dead person, and they may very well be. But while they claim to be a believer the life they lead is not a testimony to the greatness of God which will bring people to life in His kingdom. It is a witness to a lie and will cause people to stay away from Jesus and keep down the path of death.

If someone can’t admit to their sin, our prayers won’t restore them because until they repent, they can’t have life. Life with fellow believers means we will know one another and love one another. It means we are going to be aware of sins. That means bringing them to light. When that happens we have choices. Shame and guilt hide sin. Godly conviction leads to repentance.

In 2 Corinthians Paul wrote to the church and mentioned a letter he had written regarding terrible sin that had been practiced by some of them. He knew it would cause them sorrow but he understood how they needed that sin brought out into the light so they could respond to it. 2 Corinthians 7:9-11 reads,

“As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.”

When they repented God restored them to life. He had already forgiven them but now The Spirit worked through their repentance and caused them to mature and glorify God even more. But for those who let guilt keep them from repentance they couldn’t enjoy that discipline and restoration.

So sin that leads to death is unrepentant sin. Today, examine your heart and life. Ask the Spirit to reveal to you the practices you may have been hiding from yourself. Listen to your brothers and sisters without defensiveness and if any sin is shown to you, repent.

All sin prior to salvation leads to death. If you see someone sinning without godly remorse, if they don’t think it is wrong, then don’t point it out to them, don’t pray for their forgiveness. It may seem harsh. But John says not to ask God for them. Let God be God and do what He will with them. You keep being Jesus and walking in Him. When they reach a point of repentance, God will give them life.
