Psalm 2
David was God’s appointed king. He was a man after God’s own heart. (Acts 13:22). He had been chosen by God and anointed to be the king of Israel and when he was so anointed The Spirit of the LORD came upon him from that day forward. (1 Samuel 16). David was a deeply emotional man who put his many feelings, praises, misgivings, and requests into prayers and songs for The Lord.
In this Psalm he wrote about the nations that seemed to hate Israel and him and their constant desire to come against him. Verses 1-3 read,
“Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
While David cried out to God about his enemies he also prophesied about the Messiah, Jesus. David’s life often was prophetic and many of the Psalms carry messianic messages. When Jesus came, the world didn’t embrace Him, as so many of the Jewish people expected it to. Kings and nations didn’t hand over earthly rule to Him when He came back then, and they won’t hand it over to Him willingly when he comes again.
There is even more of the prophetic message here. While it is most definitely about Christ, it is also about believers. We are anointed. We are hated because Jesus was and is hated. He warned us that we would be reviled if we truly follow Him. John 15:18-20 reads,
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.”
The world wants to think that Jesus didn’t come from The Father. They try to prove it and break those bonds. When the world saw ho David was dedicated to The One True God they tried to break those bonds. And when they see us living and walking for Jesus they attempt the same thing. They discount Jesus as merely a man, a good man and even a prophet but not God. They mock us for our foolishness but they can’t break our unity with Him. He is within us. They couldn’t break David’s relationship with God either. They certainly can’t separate God from Himself as they attempt to disprove Jesus’ divnity.
Remember just as the Father and the Son are one, so are we one with Him. In John 17:20-23 Jesus prayed for us,
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”
The LORD will have His vengeance on our enemies and His. The Day is coming when His wrath will be released on the world, when all the second and seventieth chances will be over. Verses 4-6 read,
“He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
The laugh David refers to here is not a joyful one it is scathing and angry. The world treats God and His children with disdain. We do not have to reciprocate the hate. We trust God loves us and has us. He will have vengeance on those who rejected Him and us. Deuteronomy 32:35-36 says it this way,
“Vengeance is mine, and recompense,
for the time when their foot shall slip;
for the day of their calamity is at hand,
and their doom comes swiftly.’
36 For the Lord will vindicate his people
and have compassion on his servants,
when he sees that their power is gone
and there is none remaining, bond or free.”
Sometimes we may get upset for our suffering, and grieve the way we are treated. David did. God knows we do. We can cry out to Him. But we don’t have to take our own revenge. God has us. Rather we should love our enemies enough to show them who God is. He is Love. He is Truth. He wants them to come to Him. We have to give them the chance to accept Him or reject Him. We do that through love, not retaliation. We do it through kindness and gentleness, boldness and courage, not retribution, war, and hate.
God loves us so much he sent Jesus. He chose us before the foundations of the earth. (Ephesians 1:4). Because He sent His only begotten, we are His sons and daughters. Because the Son of God lives so do we. Verses 7-9 read,
“I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”
The earth and everything in it belong to God. (Psalm 24). All authority has been given to Jesus. (Matthew 28:18). He gave the disciples that authority when He sent them out to do His work. Matthew 10:1 reads,
“And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.”
In Matthew 28 When Jesus gave us the great commission, He didn’t have to give us authority. He sent the Holy Spirit. We have God within us. He has all authority and power over the world, the spirits, the nations, and the afflictions. We have The Lord’s authority because we have the Lord.
There are two choices for each person accept Jesus as Lord or reject Jesus as Lord. Love Him or Hate Him. Both choices have eternal consequences. Verses 10-12 read,
“Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”
We serve Him or we don’t. We rejoice in Him or one day we will regret and mourn that we didn’t accept Him. We take our sanctuary and protection in Him or we run from Him and perish. We serve Him in respect or we run from Him in terror. We work out our salvation with fear and trembling and live eternally or we reject Him and die eternally.
