Esther 2:1-18
The book of Esther is one with a continuing plot, to understand what is happening in one chapter, the reader must have read the previous one. So I will remind you what conspired in chapter 1.  King Ahasuerus had a great week long feast where the wine flowed freely. His queen Vashti hosted a similar feast for the women. On the seventh day of the feast, Ahasuerus called Vashti to come show herself to all the men, she refused and he became angry. Because of that he made an edict that banished her from his presence and required all wives to consider their husbands as masters.
No matter who you are or what the circumstances of your life, God can make you who He wants you to be. He can use every bad circumstance, every good circumstance, and any people He chooses to work good for you. You may have been born a pauper but God wants to make you more than a prince or princess. He has chosen to make you a king or queen. You only have to submit to His will and trust Him to do it.
Verses 1-4 continue the narrative.
After these things, when the anger of King Ahasuerus had abated, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against her. 2 Then the king's young men who attended him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought out for the king. 3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom to gather all the beautiful young virgins to the harem in Susa the citadel, under custody of Hegai, the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the women. Let their cosmetics be given them. 4 And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This pleased the king, and he did so.

The king had made his decree in the heat of anger and now that he had calmed down, he regretted it. But once the king made a decree, it was a done deal. There was no going back, no saying ‘I changed my mind.’ Once he made a law, it was a law (Esther 8:8). Ecclesiastes 7:9 reads,
Be not quick in your spirit to become angry,
for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

King Ahasuerus had been quick to get angry and acted foolishly. He missed Vashti. So the king needed a new queen. The young men who were attending him came up the idea of a sort of beauty contest, the winner would be queen. Ahasuerus liked the idea. He was not a follower of the Lord, though He had heard of the God of Israel from the Babylonian captives, people from history such as Daniel and kings like Darius. His rashness and folly was not consistent with God’s will yet God used it for His good purposes for Mordecai and Esther who we will meet in verses 5-8 eventually to save His people.
Now there was a Jew in Susa the citadel whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjaminite, 6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem among the captives carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away. 7 He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. 8 So when the king's order and his edict were proclaimed, and when many young women were gathered in Susa the citadel in custody of Hegai, Esther also was taken into the king's palace and put in custody of Hegai, who had charge of the women.
The reason that Mordecai and Esther were even in Persia was the result of the captivity. For whatever reason Esther’s parents were dead and she had been raised by her cousin Mordecai. Those are difficult and sad circumstances. But Mordecai was a man dedicated to The Lord and dedicated to giving the best to Esther. God had made Esther beautiful. Her beauty stood out, was noticed and she was taken into the king’s harem.
God has made you unique, beautiful, and with natural gift and talents. You are not meant to suppress who God created you to be, but to shine. When God created man He considered His work as very good. Look at what God had to say about creating us in Genesis 1:26-31.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
We are made in His image! That is a really big deal. We were given the whole wide world to enjoy. He created us to kings and queens. He considers us beautiful. We have all struggled. We have all been told who we are by the world. We are this race, that social status, this family, and destined to hit whatever ceiling that identity gives us. But God says you are so much more! He says, ‘It doesn’t matter who your family is, what your race is, or how poor or rich you are. It matters who I say you are.’ He doesn’t have glass ceilings. Psalm 45:10-17 describe how The Lord sees you.
Hear, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear:
forget your people and your father's house,
11     and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him.
12     The people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts,
    the richest of the people.

13 All glorious is the princess in her chamber, with robes interwoven with gold.
14     In many-colored robes she is led to the king,
with her virgin companions following behind her.
15 With joy and gladness they are led along
as they enter the palace of the king.

16 In place of your fathers shall be your sons;
you will make them princes in all the earth.
17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore nations will praise you forever and ever.

Esther let her beauty shine, not vainly but she conveyed it naturally. She believed it was the truth and she expressed it in humility and kindness. She had modesty and benevolence which led people to like her. Verses 9-11 read,
And the young woman pleased him and won his favor. And he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and her portion of food, and with seven chosen young women from the king's palace, and advanced her and her young women to the best place in the harem. 10 Esther had not made known her people or kindred, for Mordecai had commanded her not to make it known. 11 And every day Mordecai walked in front of the court of the harem to learn how Esther was and what was happening to her.
Because Esther was not afraid to be herself and because she was humble and kind she was advanced to the best place in the harem, making it easier for the king to take notice when it was time. But it wasn’t time yet. Though all the women were beautiful, they were to be made even more so. They were to be treated like royalty so that they could look like royalty. Verses 12-14 read,
Now when the turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus, after being twelve months under the regulations for the women, since this was the regular period of their beautifying, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and ointments for women--13 when the young woman went in to the king in this way, she was given whatever she desired to take with her from the harem to the king's palace. 14 In the evening she would go in, and in the morning she would return to the second harem in custody of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch, who was in charge of the concubines. She would not go in to the king again, unless the king delighted in her and she was summoned by name.
The king’s standards of beauty were higher. Some of the women might have been noble, but they were not queens. They had lived and worked as whatever their backgrounds consisted of. They were being made new. They were being treated with oil of myrrh and spices and ointments. A great deal of expense was being devoted toward making them over.
When we come to Jesus, He doesn’t leave us the same; He doesn’t leave us as who the world says we are. He makes us over and gives us new identities. He makes us over with His blood. Before He laid down His life, He was anointed with perfumes, myrrh, and ointments more than once (Luke 7:36-50, Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, John 12:1-8). When He was crucified for us, His body was treated with myrrh, spices, and ointments (John 19:39-40). When He resurrected He chose to anoint us with those things by His blood and His Holy Spirit.  2 Corinthians 5:16-17 reads,
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
When the right time came, Esther was wise enough to listen to counsel from others, to be humble and trust that those who knew the king would know how she could best please him. Verses 15-18 read,
When the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his own daughter, to go in to the king, she asked for nothing except what Hegai the king's eunuch, who had charge of the women, advised. Now Esther was winning favor in the eyes of all who saw her. 16 And when Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign, 17 the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. 18 Then the king gave a great feast for all his officials and servants; it was Esther's feast. He also granted a remission of taxes to the provinces and gave gifts with royal generosity.
She walked in to the royal palace as Esther daughter of Abihail, she left as Queen Esther. She was born Hadassah, became an orphan and raised by her cousin. But God chose her to become a queen. Hadassah is a name that describes the sweet fragrance of a myrtle tree, considered to be a tree of righteousness. Esther let the perfume of her beauty, humility, and kindness be a pleasant aroma for all those around her. She let God define her, not her circumstance. And God took her willingness and made her Queen Esther, a heroine of her people.

1 Timothy 2:8-15 Your Worship of the Lord Makes You Beautiful

1 Timothy 2:8-15
When you picture worship and fellowship with The Lord, what is the posture you imagine? Is it praying on your knees? Is it laying prostrate arms outstretched as you speak and listen to Him? Is it dancing and singing songs of praise to Him? Or perhaps like me it is standing with arms raised as I pray, sing, or praise. Whichever position and attitude you picture it is beautiful to God. It communicates submission, acquiescence, and veneration to Him.
In those times, we are not exalting ourselves. We are not concerned with how we look to the world, we are with God, blessing Him, and receiving what He has for us. And when people see it, they may think we look off-balance or silly, but they also see a testimony to the Love of Jesus. They see God’s relationship with us in its purest form. And they see the joy of being with Him. Verses 8-10 read,
“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”
That worship posture, which by the way also includes church unity and peace, is expressed in the confidence of humility. We don’t have to “dress to impress” when we live lives of worship and faith. It is not a tiara, diamonds, make-up, or a little black dress that makes a woman more attractive, it is good works. It is not a low cut blouse and a push-up bra that invite people to want to know more about a woman and why she exudes that special something, it is her faith and tangible love of others. It is the same for a man, it is not the leather jacket, tuxedo, or perfectly coiffed hair that makes someone want to ask “what is it about him?” It is His faith and the exercising of it.
You are already beautiful! Really! You don’t need the fancy clothes, jewelry, or skin cream. You were created in the image of God. Could you get any more beautiful than that? Genesis 1:26-27 says,
“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.”

Even the angels think you are beautiful! (Genesis 6:2). What do we care what men and women think, when the angels and God think we are beautiful? God, Himself considers you beautiful! Psalm 45:11 says,
“and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him.”

God desires your beauty and it is best exhibited by your worship of Him. Would you rather a construction worker or a cougar desire you than The Lord God of Heaven and Earth? If you are beautiful to God, don’t you know how beautiful you are to men and women of God?
Men and women reveal their beauty differently. Men by their prayer and spiritual loving leadership and women by their humility and quiet grace. Paul continues his exhortations for women to live godly lives and so be beautiful attracting people to Jesus and pleasing The Lord. Verses 11-15 read,
“Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”
He understands that women have more of a tendency toward the vanity of sexual splendor than men do. This is because men improperly exhibit their beauty through aggressive power and lust for women, making women want to please men sexually. Women then control men through sexual manipulation.
Most of the time when a woman has a child, it changes her point of view from herself to her child. That brings her closer to an ability to understand the love of her Father in Heaven.
Believer, you are beautiful to God! When you live a life of faith, love, and holiness you are exquisite in the sight of God and men. Your posture of worship is beautiful, it is the core of your relationship with God and a testimony to the world. Your submission to God makes you impeccably beautiful.

1 Peter 3:1-7 True and Appealing Beauty is about More than Pretty

1 Peter Chapter 3 Verses 1-7

It is not only unpopular but right out disgusting to the world that Christian wives are exhorted to submit to their husbands. But we know that the husband wife relationship is not the man unilaterally making choices for the wife, beating her, and demanding his every need be met. It is a relationship of mutual honor, in which the wife honors her husband by making trusting his choices and the husband honors the wife by meeting her needs, knowing and understanding her, and caring for her as precious and beautiful.

Verses 1-2 tell us,

“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.”

In the world wives are afraid to submit to their husbands. Perhaps it is because they don’t trust their husbands to really love them enough not to hurt them. Maybe it is because they do not want to give up power or control to anyone. Regardless of the reason it is only through our Lord that we can emulate Him with the godly marriage He subscribes. When the world sees it lived out in a Christian marriage they notice.

They notice when we as believers submit, or give our authority to another person. It is a courageous strong thing to do. It takes great strength, only the strength of the Holy Spirit makes it possible. We imitate our relationship with Christ in our relationship with others. We give Christ authority over our lives. We give our spouses authority over our lives. But in our union with Jesus, He gives our authority back to us and even shares His authority over the earth with us. In our Christian marriages we reflect our Godly union and our spouse also gives us back our authority and shares power with us. That is something the world doesn’t understand. But they do see something special about the woman who submits in a godly manner. They do note that submission in a world that treats life like a game in which winning is all that matters is unique. That deference, respect and willingness to trust another so deeply is a testimony to the love of the Father, the grace of Jesus, and the strength of the Holy Spirit.

Your faith in Christ, your relationship with the Father, and your manifestation of the Holy Spirit make you beautiful. People perceive there is something extraordinary about you when you emulate the Lord. Verses 3-4 read,

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.”

God sees you as beautiful when you exhibit the traits of Jesus we call the Fruit of the Spirit. The world sees that difference too when your embellishments are inward rather than outward. Love, kindness, gentleness, and humility are much more attractive than heavy make-up, short skirts, tight tops, and high heels. The woman with a heart after her God is precious and rare herself, she doesn’t need jewels to entice others toward her. True beauty doesn’t fade with wrinkles and stooped backs, it grows with maturity in Christ.

Sarah was one of the most beautiful women in history. Her legendary beauty is the basis for Abram’s deception of Pharaoh and God sending plagues upon Pharaoh’s house in order to rescue her. But the source for her beauty was not how she dressed herself, it was not in the jewels she put on, but her faith in God and submission to her husband. Verses 5-6 say,

“For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”

Sarah is the “mother of nations” She set out on the same long trek Abraham did. She believed the Lord with him. She spoke her mind, she guided her husband, but she acquiesced to him because she trusted him and she knew he loved her. Sarah didn’t have to guess whether her husband loved her. He showed her, even to the point of sending his son Ishmael away because his presence hurt her.

Wives do not just blindly submit to husbands. They are able to do so because the husband so blatantly loves them first. Verse 7 reads,

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

My pastor once described it like this. Imagine your dinner plates. Compare your everyday dishes to your fine China. Where to you keep the Corningware? It’s tough, it is in the cupboard, it gets washed the same as the rest of the dishes, the kids use it, and you use it nearly every day. But what about the fine China, the Waterford or the Royal Albert? That is kept in a special cabinet, on display but out of reach of little hands. It is used for special occasions. It is handled carefully so as not to break it or even chip it. Its worth is proven by the honor it is shown. Treating the Waterford as if it were Corningware would be reprehensible.

In the world, husbands do not treat their wives with such honor, compassion, and love. It is a running joke that men can’t ever understand women, but here Peter exhorts husbands to be understanding of their wives. If the husband loves her, won’t he know her enough to get where she is coming from? Jesus loves us enough to understand us.

A godly marriage is based on the union of Christ and the church. The world looks at submission to anyone especially one’s spouse as appalling. But the faith it takes to live in such an unworldly manner makes us beautiful and therefore appealing. Do not be like the world. Remember we are exiles, we are strangers in a strange land. Let them see the splendor of Christ in us.

Ezekiel 16 Are You a Princess Bride or a Whore?

Ezekiel Chapter 16

The Lord compares Jerusalem to a woman in this chapter through a captivating narrative. It goes something like this.

She was born and unwanted immediately thrown out to the elements and not a single thing was done for her. Her umbilical cord wasn’t cut, the blood wasn’t washed off her, and she wasn’t wrapped in a blanket. There she lay, helpless and weak until the Lord saw her. He was moved with compassion and said, “Live!” And she did. He made her flourish and she grew up to be beautiful. But she was still naked and poor.

When he passed her by again she was at that tender age able to take a lover. So the Lord protected her and took her in. He covered up her nakedness. He gave her beautiful clothes, fine jewelry and royalty. He fed her the best foods and her beauty and her reputation for beauty grew among the nations. Verse 14 puts it this way,

“And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.”

Everything she had, her beauty, her security, and even her life was due to God’s favor toward her. But instead of putting her trust in Him, she put her trust in her beauty. She became a whore. She went out and brought men to her and had sex with all of them. She took the clothes, silks and fabrics the Lord had given her and made shrines and places to practice whoring. She perfumed the beds with incense and oils. She took the jewelry he had given her and made sick images of men to call them to her. She even gave the good foods the Lord had given her to the men who came to her beds. All the elements of her relationship with God, she gave away in whoring. Worst of all she sacrificed her children, the ones the Lord had fathered to idols.

She never looked back to her infantile weakness, her need of redemption and the gift of life God gave her. She built brothels for herself everywhere and word of her promiscuity was known everywhere. Even the most wicked countries were shocked at how licentious and immoral she was. Nothing satisfied her she became more and more wanton. Her philandering spread everywhere.

But unlike most hookers, she didn’t accept money for her prostitution. She wasn’t forced to sell her body. She chose to do it. She seduced men. She gave them gifts, and paid them instead of the other way around.

That is quite the dramatic tale! Yet, it is how Jerusalem treated the Lord and it is how too many of us treat Him. Jesus gave us life. He covered our shame and took away our sin. He made us His bride. God gave us gift after gift including royalty. But rather than trust Him, we trust the gifts He lavished on us. We trust beauty, or personality, or power. We practice adultery openly. Then we’re shocked when outsiders judge us for hypocrisy, hate us and call us evil. We lead people away from the truth and sacrifice the children that came to follow us to Jesus to lies and whoredom.

Have you done that? Have you trusted in God’s gifts instead of God? Have you depended on His provision rather than Him? Have you put your faith in your abilities instead of The LORD? The “love” we show to idolaters and the lost by accepting their sins is not love. Their sins lead them to death, and by allowing them think God tolerates sin we are not loving them. The adultery we commit with them is hateful and harmful. Verse 37 reads,

“therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.”

God was so angry with Jerusalem for her blatant infidelity and faithlessness that He let her pay for her own sins. His salvation was not hers. She chose her own religion over a relationship with God. So He let her.  He turned her over to her lovers, the many nations whom she could have led to the Lord by glorifying him but instead led to death by glorifying herself.

In Ezekiel 16 Jerusalem was disgusted by Sodom’s sin and Samaria’s iniquities. The Lord called them her sisters and said she was much worse than they ever had been. Sodom was so evil, God obliterated the city from the planet. He called Jerusalem more abominable. We do that today. We think we’re so much better than others. We’re not like the Mormons. They have it all twisted and wrong. We are not like those disgusting homosexuals! We are better.

God says, “No, you are just like them, only worse.” He gave us every opportunity. He heaped His gifts on us. He led us to the truth, but we rejected Him. And we were proud of our rejection as we proclaimed some murky version of “truth” instead of the name of Jesus.

How often do we look at the “sinners” that surround us and think we are better than they are? We’re good. We’re “Christians” We’re not foolish unbelievers who practice every sin in the book. But we are not better. We are far worse because we know better! And too often we join them in their sin, we put a false stamp of approval over it. To know that Jesus gives perfect salvation, to understand that God love us deeply and asks us to love Him first and foremost with our heart, mind soul, and strength, and that Holy Spirit will dwell within us and yet still turn to false gods, philosophies, and sin is far more base than the sins we judge so freely.

God loves you. He wants you to believe, repent, and obey. He wants to let you experience the entirety of His love. God loves the homosexual, the Mormon, and the murderer too. He wants them to know Him. They can’t know Him if you offer some false message to them. They can’t know Him if you emulate a false god rather than the One True Living God.

God gave you life for a purpose. He rescued you for a reason. He brought you to where you are with intention. God is faithful, even when we are not. He wants you, His royal bride to bring others into the Kingdom. Verses 59-63 read,

“For thus says the Lord God: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant, 60 yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you take your sisters, both your elder and your younger, and I give them to you as daughters, but not on account of the covenant with you. 62 I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

Examine your life, your heart, and your relationship with God and with the world. Have you made Jesus Christ your Lord and King? Have you been completely faithful to Him? Have you flirted with the world instead of loving them? Are you a devoted bride to the King of kings? Do you trust God to be your God or do you trust the gifts He gave you?
