Psalm 57 Let God’s Glory Fill the Earth

Psalm 57

What is glory? What does glorified mean? To glorify God is to honor Him through our sanctification, our transformation to become perfect in His image. Imagine that glory is a mirror we hold up. We glorify God by reflecting His image to the world and back to Him. It is a pleasing worship for us to praise Him through our lives as we respond with godliness, with the fruit of the Spirit. To glorify God is to act with Love because God is Love. (1 John 4:8). It is to speak and act with Truth because Jesus is the Truth. (John 14:6). It is to walk in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, because that is the nature of The Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23).

How is The Lord glorified? Is He glorified when we suffer and moan? Or is it when we suffer and sing His Praises that He is glorified? Is He glorified when our enemies hate us and we curse them? Or is He glorified when our enemies try and trample us and we bless them and pray for them?

In this Miktam titled Let Your Glory Be over All the Earth, David expressed his anguish over his enemies to The Lord. But through his distress, he glorified the Lord. Verses 1-4 read,

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
    for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
    till the storms of destruction pass by.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
    to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me;
    he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah
God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!

4 My soul is in the midst of lions;
    I lie down amid fiery beasts--
the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
    whose tongues are sharp swords.

5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
    Let your glory be over all the earth!

6 They set a net for my steps;
    my soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my way,
    but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah”

David praised God for His mercy. Mercy is God’s loving kindness, his compassion in knowing we are fallible, yet showing us favor regardless. God shows us His mercy in many ways in this verse, God showed David His mercy by letting David take refuge in Him, by being a shield from the furor of his enemies’ attacks and the evil they tried to inflict upon him. God is our refuge through everything. No matter what our enemies do to us, we know our future, we know that God is with us and that nothing the enemy does to us can succeed. (Isaiah 54:17).

David, a man after God’s own heart showed mercy to Saul. He could have killed him when Saul came entered the cave where David was hiding. But instead he bowed down to King Saul and declared he wouldn’t kill him even though he could have. (1 Samuel 24).

David was hiding in a cave from Saul who was desperate to kill him. God surrounded and protected David like the mountain. David was even able to sleep knowing Almighty God was His refuge and that God had anointed Him to be the next king of Israel. He trusted God to sustain him and keep him alive so that he could be the king God called him to be. Believer, you have been anointed to a royal and magnificent calling, a great purpose, and an eternal hope. God is your shield in order to fulfill your purpose for His glory.

David glorified the Lord by showing mercy to Saul, by trusting God to be His refuge, and praising God and giving Him the credit for his safety instead of taking that acclaim for himself. David didn’t keep God’s great work to himself. He told people, wrote a song, sang and danced, and he praised The Lord. Verses 7-11 read,

“My heart is steadfast, O God,
    my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
8     Awake, my glory!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
    I will awake the dawn!
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.

11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
    Let your glory be over all the earth!”

David didn’t only praise the Lord when things were going well for him. He didn’t only pray when things were going poorly. He praised and prayed constantly. His faith in God didn’t waver. He wasn’t tossed around like a buoy on a tumultuous sea. God is steadfast. His love is steadfast. His commitment to us is steadfast. We glorify God with that same steadfast faith in Him.

When we manifest God’s character toward Him and to the world we glorify Him. The world can’t help but take notice. It isn’t the Christianese t-shirt or bumper sticker that says we are followers of Christ. It is our love. It is not a patronizing pretentious piety that says we are royal heirs with Jesus. It is our active and intentional love. It is walking in the Spirit and so demonstrating His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control which glorifies God. John 13:31-35 in The Message says it this way,

“When he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him, God’s glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified—glory all around!

33 “Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I’m telling you: ‘Where I go, you are not able to come.’

34-35 “Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”

Psalm 36 The Steadfast Love of the Lord

Psalm 36

Can you remember back to before you were saved? Did you enjoy sinning? Did you choose to sin sometimes even when you knew it was wrong? Although, you probably still choose to do the wrong thing on occasion, hopefully now The Holy Spirit convicts you and He makes it not so enjoyable. Verses 1-4 describe the state of the sinner increasing his sin without remorse.

“Transgression speaks to the wicked
    deep in his heart;
there is no fear of God
    before his eyes.
2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes
    that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
3 The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit;
    he has ceased to act wisely and do good.
4 He plots trouble while on his bed;
    he sets himself in a way that is not good;
    he does not reject evil.”

Why does he sin? Because it intrinsically speaks to his desires and he enjoys it. Because he has no respect for God as Lord. Because he thinks he is above the moral standards he sets for everyone but himself and think no one knows his wrongdoing. Because he is a liar and a fool who pretends to be good and wise. And because sin is such a part of him that he even meditates on it, therefore committing more and more sins.

It is or should be the opposite for the Believer. It is not sin that speaks to us, but God, our Awesome Holy Spirit. We respect God as sovereign King and Lord. We know we have sinned and don’t deserve the wonderful gift of salvation. We have the ability to speak life to people in the Gospel. And we meditate on the Word of God. The Spirit grows in us and we bear His fruit. It is not from our own ability, goodness, or faith. It is because of God’s great and untiring love for us. We can’t measure God’s love. It cannot be contained. Verses 5-9 say,

“Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your judgments are like the great deep;
    man and beast you save, O Lord.

7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light do we see light.

His love is so immense that it makes Him perfectly awesomely righteous. He judges with His love by giving us His righteousness, because we have none on our own. He saves us both physically and spiritually. His love is so tremendous that He keeps us safe and gives us rest. He provides our needs and fills us with joy. He shines a light into our hearts and shows us our iniquity. But He doesn’t leave us there, He saves us and makes us righteous. He is our Salvation because He loves us so well.

Once we are saved, He doesn’t leave us as orphans but He leads us, matures us, and keeps us safe from sin. We do not take pride in ourselves and how good we are, because we know all our goodness is from Jesus. Verses 10-12 read,

“Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you,
    and your righteousness to the upright of heart!
11 Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me,
    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the evildoers lie fallen;
    they are thrust down, unable to rise.”

Pride is our enemy and pride is what keeps sinners sinning. They think they are greater than God or gods themselves. They think they are all-powerful. The world commends those proud people and puts them on pedestals. But the Lord condemns them. In Christ though, there is no condemnation. Instead we are commended and promised crowns in Heaven. Until the sinner can humble himself, he will stay as he is, lost.

Colossians 4:2 Prayer, What Good is It?

Colossians Chapter 4 Verse 2

Colossians 4:2 reads,

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”

Continue, endure, keep going, do not stop, and restart when you do stop. Prayer is not meant to be a last ditch effort, a weak accompaniment, nor an activity only to begin and end a day.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 reads,

“Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Prayer is an ongoing two-way conversation with the Lord. We bare our souls to Him, even though He knows us more deeply than we know ourselves. We praise Him and thank Him for everything whether perceived as good or bad. We tell Him our needs and our hopes for ourselves and others. We listen to Him. We obey Him. It is a constant exchange and it keeps us strong, appreciative, growing, and in obedience. In Luke chapter 11 Jesus taught the disciples to pray. Verses 2-4 read,

“When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread,
4 and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

This prayer includes praise and requests for physical and spiritual needs. And Jesus told the disciples a parable to let them know God would grant their requests. Luke 11:5-13 says,

“And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Prayer is not ineffective. It is not a crutch. It is powerful on multiple levels. It affects the person praying and the people around her. It affects relationships between people and the Lord, and relationships between people and neighbors.

Paul says we are to pray steadfastly. That is faithfully, constantly, unwaveringly, and persistently. Because we do not get an answer right away doesn’t mean we should give up. Paul said, “Continue steadfastly in prayer.” Jesus said it by telling the parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8.

“And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

It is the squeaky wheel that gets the oil. Prayer is not complaining or whining. God hates grumbling. Prayer is faithfully asking the Father to grant a request that aligns with His will. The widow asked the judge for justice, not a revenge. The neighbor asked for bread for a visitor, not steaks for a party. The children asked their father for fish. Prayer is not meant to be greedy children with a list for Santa Claus. Prayer is about the relationship with God, our Father, our Savior, and our Peace. Prayer is about glorifying God, through our transformation to the image of Christ. When we pray steadfastly like the persistent widow, our Father grants us our requests.

Paul also exhorts us to be watchful in our prayer. We must be aware of our needs and of those around us, of when those needs are met, and of the fulfillment of God’s glory at Christ’s return. We have to stay watchful, alert, observant, attentive, and vigilant. Our prayer lives influence and involve more than just us, and we have to remember that. It is not just between us and God. Our relationship with God is public, lived overtly and so our prayer lives concern not just us but the world around us. What is the condition of our heart? What is happening in the world around us? What is happening to our neighbors and friends? What is happening in the government? What should we be praying for? Jesus also reminded us to remain watchful. Luke 21:34-36 reads,

“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

If we pray and pray, yet don’t pay attention to when those needs are met, we become like ungrateful spoiled children who never appreciate what they have and what they are given. Paul also said our prayer must include thanksgiving. We need to acknowledge all the Lord has done for us and say thank you. He not only blesses us with good things, but He blesses us through suffering, He carries us through trials, He provides our needs and He has given us eternal life, freedom, and the Kingdom of Heaven. There is so much to thank Him for. Yet too often, thanksgiving is an abrupt and thoughtless addition to prayer.

Appreciate what God has done for us! Grasp the greatness of what He is doing. Realize the awesomeness of what He has promised. Be thankful, be glad, be grateful, and tell Him so. Tell the world. That kind of prayer life results in a person without anxiety, a person who the world can’t understand, and of whom they will take note. Philippians 4:4-7 says,

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I regularly hear people say, “All we can do is pray” or “The only thing left is prayer” as if prayer is a last resort. Prayer is the first thing we should do in any situation. It is not a fallback but a lifestyle of constant steadfast watchful and thankful communication with the LORD God Almighty. It is powerful. It changes us. It changes the world.

James 5:1-12 Money Might Buy You Happiness, but it Can Also Buy You Hell.

James Chapter 5 Verses 1-12

Is money important to you? Chances are it is. One can’t survive in mainstream society without it. Do you think about it, make plans for it, and find ways to make more? If your pursuit of money is ahead of your pursuit of the Kingdom of God, you have a problem. If anything is in your heart and head before God, then you have a problem. It doesn’t have to be money, it could be lack of money, a career, a family, a lifestyle, music, a ministry, or any number of things. If you place them in front of God, they are your idol. Idolatry will send you and the people watching you down the path of destruction, toward hell.

Verses 1-3 read,

“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.”

Our earthly pursuits are temporary. They will corrode and one day be gone. Worse yet they can corrode our hearts. They make us forget the love of the Father, the truth of Christ, and the awesomeness of the Spirit. If we seek earthly glory, how can we also seek Christ’s glory? In Matthew chapter 6 Jesus taught people not to seek their own recognition by bringing attention to the charity and good works they did, by praying dramatically, or fasting ostensibly. In verses 19-21 of that chapter He said,

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Where is your heart? Is it in God’s glory or yours? Is it in a comfortable happy life or in loving others with the love of Jesus? Do you think whatever it is that is taking God’s place isn’t hurting anyone else? Are you sure? What did you do to gain and keep your money, your reputation, or your career? Did you lie? Did you steal? Did you slander someone else? Verses 4-5 describe some of those sins.

“Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.”

Believer, has someone done those things to you? What was your reaction? Did you trust the Lord enough to let Him handle it? Did you turn the other cheek because you know you cannot be separated from the love of God? Verse 6 illustrates the reaction we should have.

“You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.”

The righteous person, even wrongly persecuted, condemned and murdered, doesn’t resist the evil person. We aren’t here to fight the lost person. We are commanded to resist the devil and to draw near to God. We do not have to prove we are right. We do not have to hit back. We do not have to inflict pain. We can be humble, we can continue loving because we know who God is. We trust God. We have eternal life. Earlier in James letter, chapter 4 verses 6-8 he said,

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Does that mean we’ll suffer here? Yes. We will suffer for Christ’s sake. We will hurt or even agonize because rather than resist those who persecute us, we love them, pray for them, and bless them. But we aren’t alone. We have the Lord God Almighty. We have Jesus our Savior. We have the Spirit of the Living God. He has given us eternal life. We have the hope and promise of the Kingdom of God now and forever. That hope gives us patience, and steadfastness. Verses 7-11 read,

“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”

Our commitment, patience, and enduring are examples to others. The way we live is a witness to the power of God. Patience isn’t easy. If it were, it wouldn’t be a virtue. Grumbling and complaining against each other is not being patient or loving. It is trying to call attention to our own goodness rather than God’s. We don’t have to seek our own good reputation. We do not have to seek glory for ourselves. When we bear our suffering God gives us His reputation and we will be remembered for our faith and our steadfastness. But if we grumble and whine we will be remembered as being faithless.

We don’t have to be ostentatious about our persecution and suffering. There is no need for histrionics. At the end of the film Gone with the Wind when Scarlett says, “As God is my witness, as God is my witness they’re not going to lick me. I’m going to live through this and when it’s all over, I’ll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again.” Her melodrama removed any sympathy for her. When we speak and act with hyperbole and theatrics in ruins our witness. It brings attention from our awesome God back to us. Verse 12 says it like this,

“But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.”

Swearing and fussing gives people more ammunition to persecute us. God doesn’t want us giving people reasons to harass us. They don’t need more. They will regardless. Don’t give them reason. God doesn’t need us to swear an oath. The fact is we can’t know we will keep the vow. We are not God.

Consider today where your treasure is? What is most important to you? Is anyone or anything is in God’s throne but God? How do you handle the persecution of the world? How do you handle it when you need money, feel alone, are sick, or are being lied about? I encourage you to give it the Lord. Be humble. Be patient. Trust the King of kings.

James 1:9-18 How Do You Stay Faithful Through the Hard Times?

James Chapter 1 Verses 9-18

Life on this earth is difficult but it is also temporary. All the pursuits to gratify our cravings and create a pleasing life are temporary. Only God, His Love, His Word, and the life He gives are forever. The lost look at this current life as being all there is and so they seek fulfillment in earthly things. But those of us whom God calls His children, seek Him first and live with the knowledge of eternal life. Verses 9-11 reads,

“Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.”

Life is hard. Believers pursue the will of God and rejoice in Him. But the world seek money and other amusements to make them happy. They go through hard times and do what they can to get out of them. The poor suffer through them with complaints and anger. The rich buy their way out. Many turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain and fool themselves.

But believers submit to God’s sovereignty and go through trials with joy because they know that God is good. And God recognizes that faith, He rewards it. Verse 12 says it this way,

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

Love for God is expressed in action. We love God by serving the people around us, by loving our fellow believers and living out God’s will. As children of God, He has given us His Spirit. The Spirit is the nature and life of God. He gives us the faith to remain steadfast, steady and constant just as He is steady and constant. God is never-changing. He is steadfast and because He has given us His Spirit, we too can be. We have the hope of the promises of eternity.

But we are also human and imperfect. God’s Spirit, His nature is within us but so is our flesh nature. And so we will fall short sometimes. We do sin. The world likes to blame everything and everyone else for their sin. They especially blame God. If God had not made them poor, or rich, or orphans, or the middle child of many, or whatever they wouldn’t have sinned. People blame circumstances for their sin. They blame the broken world and call it god. But God is there to restore what is broken. Jesus is the way the truth and the life and He brings peace and healing.[1]

Even Christians like to blame God for their suffering and sin, saying God sent them this temptation to test them, or God sent them this trial to teach them. We have free will. We have the liberty to make choices and sometimes we choose wrong. Sometimes we let the desires of our flesh quench the faith and love of the Spirit. God doesn’t tempt people. He wants good things for us. He wants us to be conformed to Christ’s image. He wants to have a close and pure relationship with each and every child on this earth. God is light. He is good. In Him there is no darkness, no sin, and no evil.[2] God would never lead us to do wrong, ever. Verses 13-15 read,

“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

The bad stuff comes from the brokenness of this world. It comes from sin. When we are tempted it is because we have put our efforts into our fleshly desires instead of into loving God first with our hearts, minds, souls, and strength. God isn’t the source of evil. He is not the source of pain. People have been deceived and that lie keeps them from knowing God. God is the source of good. He is Love, Light, and Peace. [3] Verses 16-18 say,

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

He is never-changing. God is steadfast in everything including His love for us. He has always been the same and will always be the same. He doesn’t want us to trip up and fail. He is with is through good times and bad. It is attempting to fix our problems without God that we stumble and fall. Hebrews 13:5-6 read,

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

How do we stay steadfast through trials? We remember who God is. We remember He wants good for us not bad. He wants us everyone to be saved. We exercise faith because we know God is light, love, and peace.

The greatest of all the blessings and good things God gives us is peace with Him through Jesus. He brought us to it by His the word of truth, His will manifested in actuality, Jesus Christ. And we are saved not so we can be the only ones but so we can share the truth and love of God with everyone, so that others will come after us and know God too.
