Deuteronomy 3 Let the Lord Show You His Greatness and His Mighty Hand

O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? Deuteronomy 3:24
O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? Deuteronomy 3:24
Deuteronomy 3
When Moses retold the adventure of Israel wandering in the desert to them before they were finally going to take possession of The Promise Land, He didn’t retell them their faithlessness, whining and sin. He reminded them of the battles they fought and of how God had defeated their enemies for them and given them land that belonged to giants. He began the summation of the forty years by showing them what He had done for Esau and Lot. Then He had the ragtag group of ex-slaves battle King Sihon of Kedemoth and take his land. In today’s continuation of the recapitulation of the forty years, The Lord, speaking through Moses reminded Israel about another battle. When we consider our suffering, we don’t rehash sin and guilt, we remember God’s greatness, the battles, and the victory. Verses 1-10 read,
“Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.2 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ 3 So theLord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, and we struck him down until he had no survivor left. 4 And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. 6 And we devoted them to destruction, as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every city, men, women, and children. 7 But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder. 8 So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, while the Amorites call it Senir), 10 all the cities of the tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.”
King Og was not just your average king. He was fearsome. His kingdom was large and people trembled before him. He was literally a giant among men. Verse 11 describes him.
 (For only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the common cubit.)
The Rephaim were giants. They were the people who lived in Canaan and made Israel afraid to take possession of the Land. They were the people who lived in Ar, the land given to Lot’s descendants by the Lord. By the time Israel took Bashan, Og was the only giant left. His bed was made of iron, 4 ½ yards long and 2 yards wide. That implies that Og was about 12 feet tall. Goliath was 6’9” (1 Samuel 17:4). In the Israelites time in the wilderness, The Lord had led them first to show them He could defeat giants for them, then handed kings to them and then finally handed the last giant left to them. He taught them in a manner which first gave them head knowledge, then gave them a reason to believe, then took that knowledge and put in their hearts as faith.
They were not yet to The Promised Land, they were on the outskirts of it and God let them take the Bashan. Verses 12-17 reads,
“When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities. 13 The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of Rephaim. 14 Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villagesafter his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 To Machir I gave Gilead, 16 and to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, the border of the Ammonites; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from Chinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah on the east.”
They were not done with their trek yet, the land God gave them was only a small portion of what they would possess. He let them leave their women, children, and livestock there while the fighting men were to continue on. Verses 18-22 reads,
“And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of valor shall cross over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel. 19 Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall remain in the cities that I have given you, 20 until the Lord gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also occupy the land that the Lord your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So will the Lord do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. 22 You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.’”
These ex-slaves were now wealthy men of valor with so much livestock that it was prudent to leave for safe keeping with their families. The Lord had made them rich while they wandered in the wilderness. He had taught them to fight, have faith, and be strong and courageous. He had brought them from up from indigent slaves to wealthy noblemen. That is what time in the wilderness does, if we allow it. The Lord shows us His strength, He shows us we do not have to fear the enemy because He fights for us. He matures us so that we are no longer slaves to the enemy but princes in the Kingdom of God.
He has given us eternal life and we enjoy it now, but there is more fighting for us, the Lord’s courageous warriors to do. We continue on until the final battle is fought and all of us have rest together. Ephesians 6:10-13 reads,
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
The Lord does not expect or want us to fight without Him. He was with Israel as they fought Sihon and Og and He is with us as we fight rulers, authorities and cosmic powers. He is the armor He asks us to put on. He is the Truth. He is our Righteousness. He is the Gospel of Peace and our Peace. He is our Shield and our Faith. He is our Salvation. He is the Sword of the Spirit and the Word of God. We can stand firm because we do not stand alone; The Lord is with us and He fights for us.
Moses had led the people out of Egypt. He had led the people through forty years in the wilderness. But The Lord had told him he would not enter it. Moses had an extraordinarily intimate relationship with God and He was not afraid to ask Him for more. So Moses asked God for more, he wanted to see The Promised Land. Verses 23-29 read,
“And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? 25 Please let me go over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’ 26 But the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan. 28 But charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.’ 29 So we remained in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
The Lord would not change His mind and let Moses enter The Promised Land. He wanted us to understand the onus of responsibility the leaders hold for their charges. But He did let Moses see it. He showed Him the land and then said, ‘That’s enough! Let’s get on with business.’
Moses had seen God. Moses had been there as God himself wrote the Law onto stones, and did countless miracles. The Lord had done so many great works that they had become commonplace to Israel, yet Moses said, “you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand.” God has done great miracles in your life too. He resurrected you with Jesus and made you new. He has healed, provided, freed you from bondage, and more. His miracles can be so plentiful that we should just expect them, have a need and just know the Lord will meet it. We should always be aware that what we have seen god do is the smallest fraction of His greatness. When the people were dying of thirst, Moses just hit a rock with a staff and gave them water because a miracle is not too much to expect. (Exodus 17:1-7).
The Lord showed Moses His greatness in a way that Israel could not begin to grasp. But Believer, you and I are His friends too and He loves to show us who He is! He loves to do great things for us. It pleases God when we depend on Him and let Him fight for us, provide for us, and give us gifts. You may be in the wilderness, but God is showing you His might so that you can have faith enough to understand that He will always fight for you, hand giants over to you, and give you the impossible.

John 6:22-71 Do You Seek Jesus or His Blessings?

John Chapter 6 Verses 22-71

Why do you seek Jesus? Do you want the many benefits of Christianity? Do you want gifts of healing and prophecy, a good name, all your needs met, good friends, and the guarantee of Heaven? Or do you want to know God on a deep level? Many people say they seek God, but they really seek gods, peace, happiness, and the advantages of spirituality and religion.

Jesus had fed five thousand men plus women and children with two fishes and five loaves of bread. He had multiplied those resources so that after everyone was filled to the brim, He collected twelve baskets of leftovers. The followers that shared that meal with Him recognized that He was from God.

The next day they looked for Jesus but He wasn’t there, neither were His twelve trusted men. They had seen the twelve leave without Jesus. But He was nowhere to be found. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to find Him. Verses 25-27 read,

“When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

He told them the truth about their motivations, “Y’all aren’t here ‘cause you believe I’m the Messiah or even because you realize I’m sent by the Father. Y’all are here ‘cause you ate bread ‘til you needed your Thanksgiving tunics.’ But then Jesus added, ‘Don’t go after earthly stuff like provisions, bread and the rest of this temporary stuff, pursue the stuff that lasts forever, pursue only what I can give you. Only I have been given the authority and power to carry out my Father’s will.”

But they didn’t understand, they heard Jesus offering them more bread, magical bread. And they wanted it, so they asked what they had to do. Verse 29 reads,

“Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Okay! It is that easy! Just believe. Cool! They had plenty of reason to believe. They had heard Jesus speak so profoundly that He shook the core of Judaism, they had seen Jesus heal the sick, and they themselves had just eaten bread multiplied miraculously. So did they say, “Thank you, you are the Christ, we believe?” Nope, they said, “Show us a sign, make us believe.” They wanted more of the good stuff. They wanted miracles, not salvation. They wanted bread, healing, and a new government, not Jesus Christ. They even suggested a miracle, they said, “Our ancestors ate manna, God gave them bread from Heaven.”

Verses 32-33 read,

“Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jesus was telling them, it isn’t miracles or magic bread that they needed, it was Him, it was God they should be seeking. God provided manna to sustain the lives of the Israelites, God provided His Son to give true and eternal life. Jesus, the Word of God, the will of God manifested, the Son of God, the exact image of God is all we need seek. Everything else will fall into place. But these people didn’t really want the will of God, they wanted magic bread and earthly provision. They answered Jesus by asking for the bread He described.

Jesus knew it was time to get a little harder. He knew it was time to make them face the truth of their intentions so He gave them some difficult words. Verses 35-40 read,

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Well, the Jews didn’t like that Jesus claimed to come from Heaven and He was promising to raise people from the dead but Jesus got even tougher. He continued in verses 53-58.

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”

A lot of the people who had been following Jesus, watching the spectacle, and enjoying the miracles were really freaked out by that teaching. Was He telling them they had to eat his flesh and drink His blood? Most of them said, ‘no thanks’ at that point. Jesus was saying some heavy stuff. He continued to reveal their true reasons and rationales to them, He gave them a ‘what if’ scenario that was actually prophecy about what would be. He said, “Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?” (Verse 62). “What if you saw me rise up and go back to Heaven? Would you believe me then?” We know reading after the fact that He did indeed ascend to Heaven and even that wasn’t good enough for some people to believe.

It is the Spirit that allows people to understand and believe, it is the Father who permits people to believe, and it is Jesus who carried out the will of the Father to make it possible. Jesus put it this way in verses 63 and 65,

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life… “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

The words Jesus spoke were not just words, His words and actions were God’s Spirit and God’s will.

Jesus had weeded out the true followers, those who wanted to know God more deeply from those who wanted the good stuff that came with knowing God. Many left. So Jesus turned to the twelve and offered them the chance to leave too. But Peter answered in verses 68-69.

“Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Verses 70-71 read,

“Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him.”

Jesus chose you as well. He gave you the chance to seek God. He gave you the chance to enjoy God completely on a profound level that the lost can’t perceive. But it is up to you to believe. The Father granted you the faith and the choice. The Spirit grants you the revelation. The Son grants you the way. You can either believe and seek God with your whole heart or you can keep waiting for God to prove Himself to you and seek His blessings instead of Him.

John 2:1-12 Jesus' Wedding Gift Saved the Honor of the Groom. Jesus' Ultimate Gift Saves Whoever Will Accept It.

John Chapter 2 Verses 1-12

This passage is The Wedding at Cana. I find it interesting that Jesus’ first miracle takes place at wedding party and His ultimate miracle is all about a wedding feast. He is our Bridegroom and we are His bride. Every part of Jesus’ ministry had meaning to it. It looks like it is just something He did as a favor for His mother but it is deeper than that. Verses 1-5 read,

“On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

“On the third day,” brings to mind that on the third day Jesus rose from the dead. The dawn of His ministry begins with a reference to the dusk of His ministry and the dawn of a new age.

I just want to note that the disciples that Jesus had called were with Him still, enough so that when Jesus got an invite to the wedding the men with Him were also included. But something unusual happened at this wedding, the wine ran out. That shouldn’t have happened and it was a big deal. Why did it run out? Had the party run longer than anticipated? Were Jesus and His friends among so many extra guests that there was not enough? We don’t know. But it wasn’t just something minor. Running out of wine would bring shame to the groom’s family, and show that the groom was going to be unable to provide for his bride.

But Mary noticed the problem. So she went to her son, God’s Son. Jesus responds with a question, “What does this have to do with me?” and adds a statement that we can understand but likely Mary didn’t, “My hour has not yet come.” His words remind us of His hour, His crucifixion and resurrection. We read these words now, as He knew we would when He spoke them so we can look at this in light of His entire ministry, His Salvation, grace, and power. We see the end of His earthly ministry at the very beginning of it. He knew the end, when He began.

Mary had made this request of her son and she knew He could help the situation. She knew He wouldn’t let this family, their friends suffer humiliation and shame. They had no more wine but God could provide it and she trusted Him and His mercy to provide it. She didn’t know how, I doubt she imagined he would provide the way He did. She didn’t beg Jesus, she trusted He would do whatever He thought was right and so she told the servants to obey Him.

Verses 6-9 tell the next part of the story.

“Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew),”

Jesus not only provided the wine for the feast, He provided it abundantly. He provided between 120-180 gallons of wine. That is more wine than they probably started off with! An average bottle of wine today is 750 ml. There are roughly 5 bottles of wine in a gallon. That makes 120 gallons of wine about 600 bottles of wine! 900 if it was 180 gallons. This wedding feast was not going to run out of wine. Jesus had provided lavishly.

He took jars used for ritual purification of the body and filled them with perfect and plentiful wine. When Jesus died and rose again, the ritual of purification would no longer be necessary.

When the master of the feast tasted the wine he was floored. He couldn’t believe how good it was. Verse 10 reads,

“and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

Now instead of being dishonored by his lack of ability to give the bride what she needed, the groom was honored, not because of anything he did, but by the gift of wine that Jesus gave him. And Jesus gift turned it around, the okay wine had been served first, and the best wine last. When we arrive at our wedding feast with The Bridegroom Jesus, all we knew before will be dim in comparison to the brilliance and perfection of eternity. What we know now is tainted and flawed, but when we are celebrating with Jesus it will all be perfect, no more sin, no more tears, and no more illness. It will be perfect and wonderful.

Jesus gift of wine at the wedding, saved the feast and it saved the honor of the groom and his family. It was more than enough for the party and every guest could drink their fill and still there would be enough. Jesus gift of His blood on the cross saved whoever will accept it. It saved us and it is more than enough to save us. Anyone who wants salvation can have it. His sacrifice was sufficient to save you. You don’t have to keep going back for more, His mercy doesn’t run out. His grace isn’t partial but complete and perfect.

Mary asked her son to do something, she believed and left it to Him. Do you believe that Jesus can do what you ask of Him? Do you believe that Jesus can save you, restore your honor so you can commune with God? Then let Him. Do you believe that Jesus can bring you through whatever it is you are suffering? He can, let Him. Leave it to Him and let Him do it His way, not yours.

Isaiah 31 It is okay to trust God, He can handle it!

Read Isaiah Chapter 31

Yesterday we read about calling on God rather than looking to people or our own solutions to save us. Today that message is furthered. This chapter begins with a “woe.” Woe is a word that means deep anguish. In the Bible it is used to warn that terrible affliction, disaster, and despair will come to the people that do not heed the warning. Verse 1 reads,

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help
    and rely on horses,
who trust in chariots because they are many
    and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
    or consult the Lord!”

Is that you? Are you trusting in the strength of men rather than the Lord? Why turn other places for help? God is wise and His words are powerful. Just a word from Him and it is done. And when He speaks, He doesn’t take His words back. Whether you are one of the helpers or the one being helped His words will bring everyone who is not trusting in Him to death. (Verses 2-3).

Isaiah compares God to a Lion eating His prey. Nothing can shake Him or move Him from it. In verses 4-5 God describes Himself like this,

“For thus the Lord said to me,
“As a lion or a young lion growls over his prey,
    and when a band of shepherds is called out against him
he is not terrified by their shouting
    or daunted at their noise,
so the Lord of hosts will come down
    to fight on Mount Zion and on its hill.
5 Like birds hovering, so the Lord of hosts
    will protect Jerusalem;
he will protect and deliver it;
    he will spare and rescue it.”

The Lord protects His people fiercely. He exacts justice ferociously. He destroys His enemies because He loves you deeply and nothing and no one can take you away from Him. He will not allow it. Verses 8-9 describe the horror of what God’s enemies will face.

“And the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of man;
    and a sword, not of man, shall devour him;
and he shall flee from the sword,
    and his young men shall be put to forced labor.
9 His rock shall pass away in terror,
    and his officers desert the standard in panic,”
declares the Lord, whose fire is in Zion,
    and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.”

Trust God. He is more powerful than any help you seek on earth. Don’t you think He is enough? He is. He is all you need. He is sufficient for every need be it provisional, relational, or protective. He loves you so much! His love is perfect. He is Perfect Love. It isn’t our partial skewed version of love. It is flawless, whole, and vast. It is unconditional, deep, and fathomless. He loves you. Don’t you think He will take care of you? You are His precious child. He’s got you.

Isaiah Chapter 12 The LORD is my Strength and my Salvation

Read Isaiah Chapter 12

Before you were saved, you were at odds with God. You were, quite frankly His enemy. But when you submitted to the authority of Christ as your Lord, His blood for forgave every sin and made you righteous. He made it possible for you to have a relationship with The Father. Holy Spirit entered into you empowering and transforming you.

Believer, are you the same person today you were when you first received the miraculous gift of Salvation? Are you the same person now you were 5 years ago or 1 year ago? Very likely the answer is no. That transformation is not always easy. In fact sometimes it is downright terrible. But we rejoice, because we understand that He is changing us, making us more and more like Jesus each day.

Isaiah Chapter 12 is a song of praise to The LORD for His Salvation. It is 6 verses long, yet it is powerful and beautiful.

Verse 1 reads,

You will say in that day:
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
    for though you were angry with me,
your anger turned away,
    that you might comfort me.”

Isn’t that amazing, not only is He no longer angry with us, no longer in contention us but now He comforts us. Part of what Our Comforter does is transform us to be at peace with Him. No longer His enemy, but His friend, child, and representative.

Verses 2-6 read,

“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 And you will say in that day:

“Give thanks to the Lord,
    call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the peoples,
    proclaim that his name is exalted.”

5 “Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be made known in all the earth.
6 Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
    for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

We are given the great privilege of embodying His glory! We proclaim His name, His deeds, His goodness, and His greatness. Not only do we declare these things verbally but by deed and in action. And His comfort, His salvation, and His joy are a never-empty well we can drink from anytime.

Read this chapter again, read it aloud and use it as Praise for God Our Salvation, our Strength and our Song, the Holy One of Israel!

Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 8-21

Read Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 8-21

This chapter continues the prophecy about the Assyrian Invasion. There is a sort of list of grievances that God has against Israel. I wonder if any of these attitudes and behaviors resemble our own.

Verses 8-10 read,

“The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
    and it will fall on Israel;
9 and all the people will know,
    Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
    who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen,
    but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
    but we will put cedars in their place.”

Instead of taking to heart what was happening and listening to God to repent, the people were so full of themselves that as damage happened they were saying, “No biggie, we can fix it.” And not only were they ignoring what God was saying to them but when they fixed the problems themselves they were not doing it by God’s criteria. They disregarded the Lord, His plans, His words, and repaired the broken with substandard materials. They made it look good, but it wasn’t.

Do you disregard the Lord? Do you try and fix your own problems? Or do you allow the circumstances in your life to teach you, and bring you closer to Him? Your solutions will never be as good and perfect as what the Lord has planned. Your provision will never be as complete. Your repair will can only be second-rate when compared to the perfection and restoration of what God will do. Looking good on the outside has nothing to do with Jesus Christ’s righteousness, The Father’s grace, or The Spirit’s power.

Verses 15-16 read,

“the elder and honored man is the head,
    and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;
16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,
    and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.”

The people were not turning to God, and they were not turning to their king whom He had put in place. Perhaps they didn’t like the answers they got from The Lord, His true prophets and His king. They looked elsewhere for guidance. They looked to people who would tell them what they wanted to hear.

The Lord tells you go this way, do this. But it’s too hard to forgive, to accept discipline, or choose the right over the easy so instead you listen to the respected and popular voice whose advice is positive, easy to swallow and easy to follow. If you are uncertain about God’s voice, you can be sure of a few things. God speaks from deep love for you. His plan will probably not be the easy one. It requires faith. His plan will not cause you to harm others or otherwise sin. Rather than avoid suffering, His plan makes the trials work to better you.

Verses 19-21 read,

“Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    the land is scorched,
and the people are like fuel for the fire;
    no one spares another.
20 They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,
    and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;
each devours the flesh of his own arm,
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;
    together they are against Judah.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.”

When disaster, hunger, and economic ruin hit Israel they only let it fuel the fire of their own desires and hungers. They had no money so they wanted more. They were hungry so they wanted food. And with every little bit they got, they weren’t grateful or satisfied. Getting a little made them want more and more until they turned against one another. They didn’t stand together or help one another. Their greed consumed them.

What about you? When you are short on cash, does the desire for money eat you? Or do you trust the Lord to provide like He promised. When you are hungry, are you thankful for the bread He provided or do you look for the filet mignon to go with it? Would you share the little you have with someone else in need or fight them to get to the front of the soup line before the kitchen closes?

Did you recognize yourself in any of these attitudes? Even a little? That is your Lord, His Spirit is revealing to you these problems. He wants to transform you to His Image. Give it all over to Him. Let Him have His way with you, your heart, your attitudes, and your actions. Let him make you into the image of Christ. How much better is that than the image of Donna? About a bazillion percent. No it is more like ∞%.

Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 1-7

Read Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 1-7

The first part of chapter 9 speaks about how the righteous will fare under the Assyrian invasion that Isaiah is prophesying about. Even through the very worst circumstances, famine, disease, and death, we do not have to suffer the way the lost do. Maybe they wail night and day. Maybe they have lost everything that matters to them, but that is not so for us, if we have Jesus Christ. If His blood has made us righteous, then we walk with God and He will never leave us. We know no matter what disaster strikes God will work it for our good. We may be in the same circumstances, having to face the same famine, the same wars, the same diseases but we have The Almighty Loving triune God, Lord of Lords with us.

This chapter is also Messianic prophecy. The gentiles who once were the pagans and heathens who didn’t know who God was or even heard of His law will see the light. Verses 3-4 read,

“You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
4 For the yoke of his burden,
    and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.”

We no longer have to be oppressed by Satan and his lowly minions. We are free from the slavery and captivity of the enemy. We are celebrating and all the treasure and reward meant for the powerful and high (or to the Israelites who chose the Law over Jesus) belongs to us. Why? Verses 7-8 tell us,

“For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

If you’re like me you’re singing those verses, not only because they were so beautifully put to music by George Frideric Handel, but because Jesus is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Because He is our perfect Messiah and I love Him dearly but He loves us more. His Love for us is deeper than we even have the capacity to comprehend.

He didn’t promise we wouldn’t suffer. But He did promise He would always be with us through everything. (Deuteronomy 31:8). He promised that all that suffering has benefits for us. (Romans 5:3-5, Romans 8:28-29).  He promised that we will have eternal life. (1 John 5:13-14).

Isaiah Chapter 7 Say yes to God!

Read Isaiah Chapter 7

In this Chapter Isaiah goes to speak to King Ahaz about some trouble makers Rezin the King of Syria and Pekah the king of Israel. They had gotten together to war against Judah. But God spoke to Ahaz through Isaiah and told him not to worry about it. Verses 7-9 read,

“7 thus says the Lord God:

“‘It shall not stand,
    and it shall not come to pass.
8 For the head of Syria is Damascus,
    and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
And within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.
9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria,
    and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.
If you are not firm in faith,
    you will not be firm at all.’”

God told them to have faith in Him and let Him take care of the problem. The two forces Syria and Ephraim (Israel) did join forces and they were fierce. Ahaz was terrified and his people were terrified too. God reminded Ahaz to stand firm in faith, trust Him, and see that He would protect them.

God wanted to strengthen Ahaz faith, He wanted to show Him that He meant business. So He did this amazing thing He said, “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” (Verse 11). But Ahaz decided to take a falsely pious route, he acted like God was testing him instead of offering to show His power and might. Ahaz answered, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” He denied The LORD the opportunity to use him to show His power. He didn’t allow God to be glorified and his people’s faith strengthened by a great sign. The Lord asked Ahaz to put Him to the test! He told Him to ask for any sign no matter how extravagant and He would do it. He wanted to make their faith firm by showing His might and power. God offered Ahaz a miracle and Ahaz said no. I can almost hear His heavy sigh of exasperation as He answered the king. Verses 13-16 read,

“And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.”

The Lord had told Ahaz that not only would He be with them, but this war be completely over in less than 13 years. He was more powerful than any army, any king, or any force on earth. But he had more. He said, “This war will be short and you’ll be fine, but there is another king coming and the war he wages will not be so easy. The king of Assyria will come and he will shame you, bring the economy to its knees and leave a small remnant of survivors.”

God’s prophecy had more than one meaning and more than one time when they would come to pass. During Ahaz time a currently unmarried girl would have a child and before he reached the age when he could make moral decisions the war would be over.

But we also know this is the greatest and most wonderful sign we could ever ask for. The prophecy of Jesus birth, God Himself coming to earth to make a way for our salvation. The prophecy concerning the king of Assyria mirrors what will happen to the earth in the last days when the antichrist comes to destroy man and make war against God. But we have faith and we stand firm in our faith. We know that God has the plan and He has the victory.

Have you been afraid to let God reveal His power to you or through you? Ahaz had the chance to allow God to reveal His great power by asking for a miracle. But used piety as an excuse for his faithlessness. He used God’s own sovereignty as an excuse. God told Ahaz to ask, and Ahaz refused. What comfort would that brought to a terrified people? What goodness? Ahaz wasn’t a super great stand-up guy, but God still wanted to do something wonderful for him.

God wants to strengthen your faith by revealing Himself through you. He wants to use and be glorified through you. He wants to do great things through you. What excuses are you using to deny God His glory? Are you too good to ask God for a miracle? Are you afraid you’re not good enough for God to do something for you? Are you to afraid that God will not be there when you ask? Do you think God can’t or won’t do it?

God came to earth from the splendor of Heaven. He sent His precious and wonderful Son, Jesus to the world because of His deep love. He already did a miracle bigger and deeper than anything we could come up with. Don’t be afraid to ask for more. Don’t be afraid to let God do the impossible through you.

Here are some reminders that God still wants to do great things in your life, for you and through you.

John 14:12-14 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

James 4:2-3 “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
