Deuteronomy 15 The Sabbath, Forgiveness, and Generosity

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 2 Corinthians 9:7-9
Deuteronomy 15
The Sabbath is more than the seventh day of the week. It is a profound celebration of the profound concept of deliverance to life. The Lord did not only proclaim a Sabbath day once a week, He proclaimed a Sabbath year every seventh year. In this chapter of Deuteronomy, Moses reiterates the laws of the Sabbath year. Verses 1-3 read,
“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, because the Lord's release has been proclaimed. 3 Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your brother your hand shall release.”
In the Sabbatical Year, whatever debts were owed within and between Israelites were forgiven. Every person who owed a debt was released from that debt. The Lord demonstrated the concept of forgiveness to His people by having them understand what it meant to forgive something as tangible as wages and money. Foreigners were not forgiven of their debts. This too demonstrates salvation, it is by God’s will, His chosen are forgiven. Foreigners did not worship The Lord and were not covered by the blood of sacrifices, their debts were not released.
And The Lord told Israel that they would be prosperous if they would diligently obey the Law. Verses 4-6 say,
“But there will be no poor among you; for the Lord will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess— 5 if only you will strictly obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all this commandment that I command you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.”
Within the church, there are no poor because we have an inheritance from God and that is eternal life. We have a wealth of treasure in Heaven if we obey the law to love as Jesus loves. Jesus loved by laying His life down for us and forgiving us a debt we could not pay. We are to love one another that way. The church should show the grace of the Lord to the world, freely and joyfully giving to them and demonstrating God’s perfect love to them, freely forgiving people because Jesus forgave us. We should not be be inflicting the wounds that require forgiveness.
Forgiveness whether it is of emotional or physical wounds is hard. Forgiveness of financial debt is equally difficult. It is a sacrifice to forgive. When I loan someone money and time passes without them paying me back, I forgive the debt and I feel it, but I do not let it stress me because I know who my Lord is, He provides. In my act of faith, He blesses me.
Forgiving emotional and physical hurts is also a sacrifice. It is not easy to let those wounds go. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for Jesus to be whipped and ridiculed and never answer back. He was completely innocent and He was slapped, stripped, beaten and murdered yet He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). I know how hard it is to forgive terrible abuses. I know how hard it is to forgive spiteful actions against us, but how can we manifest Jesus to the world if we don’t? We must be as generous as God in every aspect. Jesus told us to, “love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). That is real, concrete, and visible love within the church and beyond her. It is not only in forgiving but in giving we show abundant love. Verses 7-11 read,
“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother,8 but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. 9 Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. 10 You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’”
For many of us money is something challenging to let go of. That is why we are commanded to give cheerfully and generously and to forgive the debts owed to us. But money is not the issue for everyone, for some it is pride, mercy, or kindness. We are to be generous in all these areas. We aren’t supposed to be offended by someone’s actions or words. How can they hurt us, we are shielded by The Holy Spirit. We are supposed to forgive others as we ourselves were forgiven (Colossians 3:13). The tangible nature of generosity with money teaches us we can forgive the intangible wounds of the heart and let go our pride which keeps us from fully becoming the image of Christ. This same generosity of money shows the world a clearer picture of Jesus and leads to deliverance. If we give grudgingly to one another, the world sees that and decides that God is hard-hearted and stingy.
Being generous shows the world we have faith. The more generous we are the more God is able to bless us and demonstrate His provision and blessings to us. There will always be poor among us. Hording away money will not change it, even generous giving won’t change it. But generously caring for the poor will show the world who Jesus is. When Mary (the sister of Martha) anointed Jesus with expensive perfume, Judas was outraged that Jesus would allow such a waste. He said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He didn’t care about the poor, he had no plans to give the money to the poor; he wanted the money for himself. Jesus answered, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me” (John 12:1-8). Mary was generous with her precious perfume and she used it to glorify The Lord. Her generosity revealed Jesus as Messiah. Our generosity can do the same. Our love manifested as generosity can lead to people being released from slavery to sin to become slaves of righteousness. Verses 12-18 read,
“If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you, he shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. 13 And when you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. 14 You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress. As the Lord your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this today. 16 But if he says to you, ‘I will not go out from you,’ because he loves you and your household, since he is well-off with you, 17 then you shall take an awl, and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your slave forever. And to your female slave you shall do the same. 18 It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you, for at half the cost of a hired worker he has served you six years. So the Lord your God will bless you in all that you do.”
One Israelite could only be a bondservant to another for six years, after that regardless of the debt, the slave was freed and given generous provision for beginning life as a free person. Forgiveness shows the forgiven God’s immense riches and love. As the Israelites were once slaves in Egypt, we too were once slaves. We were redeemed, forgiven of our debts and so we forgive too. When we are plentiful with our love the person receiving it might love the Lord in return and choose to devote herself to God. In Israel when that happened the person was sealed by the piercing of her ear and bonded forever to her master. She was forever in her master’s household. When someone devotes themselves to The Lord and chooses to serve Him, she is likewise sealed for eternity into the household of God, she becomes a slave of righteousness, compelled to love as Jesus loves. The wonderful thing about becoming a member of The Lord’s household is that we are no longer servants but friends, no longer slaves but free, no longer children of wrath but sons and daughters of the King of kings. John 15:7-17 reads,
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.”
We are not only supposed to be generous toward others, but generous toward The Lord who is so very generous with us. Verses 19-23 read,
“All the firstborn males that are born of your herd and flock you shall dedicate to the Lord your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. 20 You shall eat it, you and your household, before the Lord your God year by year at the place that the Lord will choose. 21 But if it has any blemish, if it is lame or blind or has any serious blemish whatever, you shall not sacrifice it to the Lord your God. 22 You shall eat it within your towns. The unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as though it were a gazelle or a deer. 23 Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.”
We give Him the first and the best. We give others the best as well. Giving what we don’t want is not generosity, it is a miserly and empty act. How does your second-hand dirty or unwanted donation show the abundant riches of God, the awesome love of Jesus, or the immense faith of The Spirit? The next time someone is collecting canned foods for the hungry, don’t pull out the can of lima beans that you’ve had in your pantry for six years, pull out the can of chicken or asparagus you were planning on cooking tonight. Pull out the ravioli you love to eat for lunch, give the best of what you have and see how God will bless you.
Practice the Sabbath, not only in dedicating your days to the Lord, but in demonstrating the forgiveness and generosity of The Lord in delivering you from slavery to freedom.

Psalm 14 The Foolish and the Consequences of Ignorance

Psalm 14

I know a few people who are agnostics and even atheists who believe Christians are chumps. We’ve been duped into believing that there is a god out there who loves us so completely he came to earth, lived an impossibly sinless life, gave up his life, and rose again. How stupid can we be? Even other religions who believe in a god or gods think Christians are crazy for thinking we do not have to earn our eternal reward.

But the Bible, God’s perfect Word made evident for us reminds us the opposite is true. Verse 1 reads,

“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
    They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds,
    there is none who does good.”

Even the so called good deeds of the lost are not really good. Man can do no good without The LORD. We either serve our Master the One True Living God or we serve the prince of the power of the air, Satan. While God uses all deeds good or evil to benefit His children and conform us to His image when an act is done to serve the enemy it is not a good work, it is self-serving and self-edifying. The good that comes from it is due to God.

Without Him, we can’t be good. Doing good doesn’t earn us salvation it is a result of salvation. The Lord looked for a person who was good without Him and found none. He saw our great need of Salvation through Him, Jesus our Christ, our Redeemer. Verses 2-3 read,

“The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
    to see if there are any who understand,
    who seek after God.

3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
    there is none who does good,
    not even one.”

He looks for those who seek Him and when we do, He promises we will find Him. He is at the ready for any who call on His name. In Matthew 7:7-8 Jesus said,

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

Romans 10:13 says,

“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

In their ignorance the lost seek pleasure, self-satisfaction, riches, and power. They hurt others to gain these things. God would freely give joy, contentment, treasures in Heaven, and His power and authority if only they would acknowledge Him and ask. Verse 4 laments their obliviousness.

“Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
    who eat up my people as they eat bread
    and do not call upon the Lord?”

They are the fools and their foolery results in evil. It results in hate, especially toward the One True God and His followers. God loves us so deeply that when the time comes He will avenge us. Jesus will lead the great army of angels and take vengeance. The Day of Judgement is coming. Verses 5-6 say,

“There they are in great terror,
    for God is with the generation of the righteous.
6 You would shame the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is his refuge.

7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.”

We have a great sanctuary in The Lord. That Day will be horrible for the lost. Do we really want that end for them? The Lord God Almighty doesn’t want a single one of the lost to die. He doesn’t want them to burn in Hell for eternity. (2 Peter 3:9). And we should share His heart and His nature. We grieve their ignorance rather than reciprocate their hate. We should seek to tell them the wonderful truth, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus loves them and so should we. Even while He was on the cross dying a horrendous death for us He showed His profound love. Luke 23:34 says,

“And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Even the most evil of people was created in the image of God. He loves them. He wants them to know Him. You and I can be the ones to tell them and to show them.

Philemon Verses 8-25 Do I Really Have to Forgive as Jesus Forgave?

Philemon Verses 8-25

Paul wrote to Philemon on behalf of Philemon’s slave Onesimus, who had for some reason left Philemon without permission. During that time Onesimus had met Paul and become a believer. Paul knew by right and by law that the slave had to return to his master. So he wrote to appeal to Philemon to forgive Onesimus and look at all the good that came out of his disobedience and subsequent return to obedience.

Forgiveness is not an easy thing for everyone. But God commands us to forgive. Forgiveness is a hallmark of salvation. Matthew 6:14-15 reads,

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

God forgave us of so much and somehow we hold on to slights and hurts and blame. And sometimes, some of us can’t bring ourselves to forgive. But if we are being transformed to Christ’s image then we have to forgive, because that is how Jesus loved us. It is very hard to do, but we can do it because we have The Holy Spirit and He makes it possible for us to live righteously.

Paul knew the kind of man Philemon was. His love and faith were a source of joy and encouragement for many believers. So he trusted his brother to do the right thing. But he still wrote to him, perhaps to ease Onesimus’ anxiety over what would happen to him when he returned, apologized, and made up for his wrong. Verses 8-10 read,

“Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, 9 yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus— 10 I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment.”

We do not have a right to choose not to forgive another person. Regardless of whether that person has apologized or repented. But, we are commanded to forive especially if the person is penitent. What right do we have to hold his sins against him, when our Lord doesn’t hold our sins against us? When we forgive another it opens opportunity to rebuild a relationship, and to make good come out of the bad. When Onesimus left Philemon, he became a believer. And so when he returned to Philemon he could be of so much more use to his master, and to his master’s ministry. Verses 11-16 read,

“(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) 12 I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. 13 I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel, 14 but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own accord. 15 For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, 16 no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.”

Paul didn’t look down on Philemon and judge him for his sin, he shared the gospel with him and afterward told him he needed to go back and atone for the wrongs he had done to Philemon. Paul saw Onesimus not as a slave and a sinner, but as a brother and a partner. He saw all the great this man could do for the Kingdom. He knew Philemon would do the right thing, he had no doubt, but he needed Philemon to see himself in this new light not only as slave but as a co-worker for the Lord, a brother to the believers, and a slave of Christ. He needed Philemon to forgive Onesimus and he needed Onesimus to recognize that forgiveness from God and from Philemon and consequently forgive himself.

God forgave us. He chooses not to remember our sins, why do we hold onto them? We have to be able to forgive ourselves just as much as we forgive others. It is the enemy, our accuser who wants us to remember all the awful things we’ve done, not our Lord.

But consequence for our sins still remain. We have to deal with them righteously. When Onesimus left Philemon, he caused problems, he caused losses that someone had to make up. Paul offered to pay Onesimus’ debt. Paul was loving Philemon and Onesimus as Jesus loved him. He didn’t question that Philemon would not only forgive Onesimus but also forgive the debt he incurred. Regardless Paul offered so that Onesimus could return with the promise and ability to repay his master and be welcomed back. Verses 17-22 read,

“So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.18 If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. 20 Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you.”

Paul closed his letter with hope, he was in prison with no idea how long it would be, but still he told Philemon to expect a visit from him. He knew the love and brotherhood shared among the believers would be expressed in many ways, such as hospitality, kindness, encouragement, unity, prayer, and forgiveness. Verse 23-25 read,

“Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24 and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers.

25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.”

Does the Lord’s grace cover only you or do you extend it to others? Do you forgive as you were forgiven, wholly and without limit? Is there someone you need to forgive? It is not easy. Jesus never promised the walk would be easy. He is with you and he will make it possible. He has given you the faith to accomplish it.

Ezekiel 25 Leave Vengeance to the Lord. Take the Opportunity to be Compassionate and Kind.

Ezekiel Chapter 25

Now that Jerusalem had been taken, and the Temple profaned, The Lord gave Ezekiel prophecies against other nations. Each nation had celebrated or spoken out against Israel the Lord was giving them judgments so they would know He is the Lord.

Verses 3-7 is God’s prophecy against Ammon.

“Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God, Because you said, ‘Aha!’ over my sanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, 4 therefore behold, I am handing you over to the people of the East for a possession, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings in your midst. They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5 I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and Ammon a fold for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 6 For thus says the Lord God: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced with all the malice within your soul against the land of Israel, 7 therefore, behold, I have stretched out my hand against you, and will hand you over as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”

He has similar judgments against Moab, Seir, Edom, and Philistia. Each nation rejoiced over Jerusalem’s fall. Each had something negative to say about Israel and Jerusalem. Verse 8 says,

“Thus says the Lord God: Because Moab and Seir said, ‘Behold, the house of Judah is like all the other nations,”

Verse 12 says,

“Thus says the Lord God: Because Edom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended in taking vengeance on them,”

Verse 15 reads,

“Thus says the Lord God: Because the Philistines acted revengefully and took vengeance with malice of soul to destroy in never-ending enmity”

And the Lord dealt with each of them accordingly so that they would know Him or something about Him. Verse 11 reads,

“and I will execute judgments upon Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Verse 14 ends with, “…and they shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.”

And Verse 17 says,

“I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them.”

Jerusalem may have deserved her dire sentence. But that was between her and the Lord. Israel was still God’s people and He was still their God. He doesn’t take kindly to hatred of His people. That means a couple of things for you and me.

First, have you ever delighted over seeing someone deal with the consequences of their actions? Have you ever reveled in someone else’s misfortune? Did you smirk when the rude waitress lost her job? Did you cheer when you saw the Porsche driver pulled over by the policeman?

Trouble, adversity, and hardship in other people’s lives are not opportunities for you to gloat. They are openings for you to love, show kindness and compassion, and share your testimony in a tangible way. God allows trouble for a reason and it is normally so that people will know He is the Lord, that He will be glorified. You and I as believers, can be a part of glorifying Him. We don’t have to prove the haters right by delighting in their hard times.

It also means that if you belong to God, if you are His child, you do not have to concern yourself with fighting all those who call you hater or hypocrite, or who harm you, rob you, or otherwise cause you detriment. You are God’s. He is with you, before you, behind you and beside you. He’ll handle the people who hate you. He will show them He is Lord. You don’t have to. Do you trust God to be God?

Deuteronomy 32:31-36 reads,

“For their rock is not as our Rock;
    our enemies are by themselves.
32 For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom
    and from the fields of Gomorrah;
their grapes are grapes of poison;
    their clusters are bitter;
33 their wine is the poison of serpents
    and the cruel venom of asps.

34 “‘Is not this laid up in store with me,
    sealed up in my treasuries?
35 Vengeance is mine, and recompense,
    for the time when their foot shall slip;
for the day of their calamity is at hand,
    and their doom comes swiftly.’
36 For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and have compassion on his servants,
when he sees that their power is gone
    and there is none remaining, bond or free.”

Even God’s vengeance is compassionate. We have to keep in mind that their rock is not our Rock. They don’t know God. But the Lord will vindicate you. Keep in mind also, that He had mercy on us. We didn’t get the punishment we so sorely deserve. What right do we have to hope someone else is punished because we think they deserve it? Judgment and punishment is not our job, it is up to the Lord. Evil is not triumphed by evil, it is overcome by good. God tells us to prevail over evil with tangible love and kindness. (Romans 12:14-21).

Colossians 3:12-14 reminds us we are to be kind and we are to forgive because we are forgiven.

“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Let God be God, you be His. Let Him handle the haters and you love Him by loving them. Remember they are not the enemy, they are lost. Their rock is not our Rock.

Ezekiel 24:1-14 Only God Can Clean the Unlcean

Ezekiel Chapter 24 Verses 1-14

God spoke to Ezekiel and Israel and told them that Babylon was laying siege to Jerusalem. The prophecy of destruction they had been warned about repeatedly was happening. He then gave them a parable about a pot of soup. It probably brought to mind Jeremiah’s prophecy about the same event from to mind (The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.” Jeremiah 1:13).

Verses 3-5 read,

“And utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the Lord God:

“Set on the pot, set it on;
    pour in water also;
4 put in it the pieces of meat,
    all the good pieces, the thigh and the shoulder;
    fill it with choice bones.
5 Take the choicest one of the flock;
    pile the logs under it;
boil it well;
    seethe also its bones in it.”

That soup sounds delicious at first. But then the choicest one of the flock is added to the recipe, not just the marrow bones and the good pieces of meat, but the entire animal, bones, blood, organs, prime meat, and inferior meat. What would have been excellent has been tainted and is unclean. Verses 6-7 continue the parable.

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice.7 For the blood she has shed is in her midst; she put it on the bare rock; she did not pour it out on the ground to cover it with dust.”

Jerusalem represented by the pot, and the people in it represented by the meat in the soup would not and could not escape their fate.

The Lord continues in verses 10-12,

“Heap on the logs, kindle the fire, boil the meat well, mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned up. 11 Then set it empty upon the coals, that it may become hot, and its copper may burn, that its uncleanness may be melted in it, its corrosion consumed.12 She has wearied herself with toil; its abundant corrosion does not go out of it. Into the fire with its corrosion!”

The corrosion of the fire on the pot makes its contents inedible, the fire and the dust of the ground make the meat removed unpalatable. The entire pot of soup became useless and needed to be wasted. The people of Jerusalem had become so defiled that they were past the point of fixing. Once copper has contaminated food, it is ruined.

Verses 13-14 read,

“On account of your unclean lewdness, because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your uncleanness, you shall not be cleansed anymore till I have satisfied my fury upon you. 14 I am the Lord. I have spoken; it shall come to pass; I will do it. I will not go back; I will not spare; I will not relent; according to your ways and your deeds you will be judged, declares the Lord God.”

No priest, false god, nor idol could fix the problems in Israel. Only the LORD God, The Holy One of Israel could cleanse them. He had given them multiple chances to turn to Him, but they had flouted every opportunity. So He let them have their way. He let the defilement they had chosen be what destroyed them as Nebuchadnezzar came and laid waste to Jerusalem.

Only God can clean the unclean, forgive our iniquity, and make us whole. No self-help program can heal our wounds. No philosophy can cleanse us from sin. They may seem to help a little. They may put a salve on the pain, or temporary stitches in the wound, but they just cover up they do not heal. Only the Lord can forgive us, heal us, and make us clean. Jesus does for us what no amount of positive thinking or unity with the universe can do. It doesn’t take twelve steps to be whole. It doesn’t take charms, or rituals. It is as simple as 1 John 1:5-10 says it is.

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Israel could have conceded their sinfulness to the Lord, He already knew about it, just like He knew about ours. But they chose to continue walking in the dark, practicing idolatry, and hiding their evil.

Have you admitted your sinfulness to yourself and to God? Have you realized your need of forgiveness and asked Jesus to cover you with His blood and make you righteous? That is all it takes. There is nothing more than admitting your sin asking Jesus to be your Lord. He cleans it all away and when your Father in Heaven looks at you, He doesn’t see a defiled sinful person, He see the righteousness of Christ. He sees His beloved child.

You can turn to all the self-help books and religions of the world to try and improve yourself. You can become one with the universe and expand your consciousness but that won’t restore your relationship with the Creator of the Universe. Or you can become one with The Creator through Jesus Christ and be sealed by the Holy Spirit and restored to the Father by accepting the gift of salvation.

The Beatitudes Part 6 Blessed are the Merciful

We continue our study of the beatitudes with Matthew 5:7.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”

What is it to be merciful? The Greek word used here is eleéō. It means to have pity or show mercy as it aligns with God’s truth. It is to act on God’s terms in His covenant. (Strong's). Merriam-Webster’s defines merciful as treating people with kindness and forgiveness, not cruel or harsh, and giving relief from suffering.

Compassion for another person in such a way that you are able to forgive their flaws and be kind to them is what being merciful is. And being merciful is not always so easy. It is something we must choose to do deliberately. It is not a natural trait, but it is a characteristic of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23). It is one we can exercise because God is in us and we are operating in His covenant. It is also a quality Jesus expects us to implement. In Matthew chapter 6:14-15 Jesus said,

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

And what right do we have not to forgive people? What right do we have not to be merciful? Ephesians 4:30-32 says,

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Consider that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). And the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23). We deserve death. In fact before we came to Christ, we were dead. Ephesians 2:4-5 reads,

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—“

We deserve death. We deserve not to have a relationship with God. But He is rich in mercy. He chose to forgive us and not give us death. By His grace, He gave us new life and a relationship with Him.

When you elect to forgive others and show them kindness you are opting happiness. You are forgiven, God decided not to make you pay for your sins. He paid for them instead. He chooses not to bring to mind your sin any longer. He asks the same of you. God was merciful to you. He has a never-ending supply of mercy. Be merciful and God shows you mercy. All those mistakes you make, God forgives them.

Deciding to forgive others, showing them kindness and compassion, letting go of the bitterness and anger over the wrongs done to you allows you to be happy. Emptying yourself of the right to hold onto the injuries inflicted on you makes room for the Spirit. He makes it possible for you to be joyful, peaceful, and merciful.

    As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
