Psalm 119:25-32 My Soul Clings to Sin and Death or to Jesus and Life

Psalm 119:25-32

We are human. We know it. We use it as an excuse for our bad behavior often enough. God knows it too. That is why He sent Jesus, His perfect Son to be the Way for us to reconcile with Him in peace. We are human, but we do not have to settle for the corruption of our flesh. We may be human but as believers we have the Perfect Holy Spirit living in us. We don’t have to let our flesh win. Verses 25-26 read,

“My soul clings to the dust;
give me life according to your word!
26 When I told of my ways, you answered me;
    teach me your statutes!”

Our souls cling to dust. It is often easier to give in to the flesh. It is easier to have immediate gratification and forget about eternity. But like the psalmist, we can acknowledge the state of our sin nature and ask God to give us life in Jesus. When we confess and repent as we tell The Lord how sinful, helpless, and hopeless we are, He forgives, He gives us His Spirit, and He teaches us His way.

Some are still stagnant, some still cling to our old dead selves. Some do not realize it is a choice to be the new creation God has made us. Colossians 3:1-5 says,

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry”

How do we do that? How do we choose to put to death the earthly things, the dustiness of our old selves? First, we have to set our minds on Christ, The Kingdom of Heaven, and God’s righteousness. (Matthew 6:33). But how can we put our minds on The Kingdom of Heaven? How do we know what it is that is of Christ or of the world? How do we seek God? Verses 27-8 read,

“Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will meditate on your wondrous works.
28 My soul melts away for sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word!”

We get to know God through His Word, the Scriptures, The Truth revealed through The Holy Spirit and demonstrated through Jesus Christ. The psalmist asked God to make him understand. The Holy Spirit allows us to understand the Scriptures and reveals the secrets that those without Him cannot understand. (Ephesians 3:1-6). We can speak until we are blue in the face and the world will think we are crazy. They call the Bible a lie, Jesus a crutch, and believers weak minded. But we know the truth because we have the Spirit of Truth. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 says,

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Verse 29 reads,

“Put false ways far from me
and graciously teach me your law!”

God gives us discernment. His Holy Spirit distinguishes truth from lies, dark from light, and Godly from earthly. God’s Word, Jesus Christ has given us His mind as the Spirit transforms us to Jesus image, we as spiritual and not fleshly beings, are able to discern those things too. (1 Corinthians 2:14-16). God’s written Word also allows us to discern those things. (Hebrews 4:12). That discernment keeps us away from false doctrines. 1 John 4:5-6 tells us,

“They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”

Discernment is not only an act of the mind, but it permeates the heart. We come not only to recognize what is from God and what is not, but we come to love what is from God, and that affects the way we live our lives. (Romans 12:9-11). Verses 30-32 read,

“I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
I set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
    when you enlarge my heart!”

Yes, we are human but we have The Spirit of Truth in us transforming us, maturing us, and making us more and more like Jesus every day if we choose to let Him. Believer, encourage you to set the Word of God before you. Cling to God’s testaments, the truth of God’s will and love demonstrated for you. Cling to eternal life rather than your dead past. Let God make you over into Jesus’ image and grow your love, your spirit, your soul, your mind, and your ministry.

2 Peter 3 Haven't We Been Saying "Soon" for about 2,000 years?

2 Peter Chapter 3

Judgement Day is coming. I’ve heard people make thoughtless jokes about it. About how perhaps the Prophets and the writers of the Epistles should look up the definition of the word ‘soon’. I’ve heard people ridicule the prophecies and those who believe them. They depict believers as insane homeless people preaching on street corners or crazy cult leaders ready to kill their entire congregation.

But the fact is The Day is coming, and it is coming soon. We don’t know exactly when, so we need to live like it might be tomorrow, today, or in ten minutes. It is something all believers need to keep in mind as we live our lives. Peter urged the church to remember The Day of the Lord. Verses 1-7 in The Message read,

“My dear friends, this is now the second time I’ve written to you, both letters reminders to hold your minds in a state of undistracted attention. Keep in mind what the holy prophets said, and the command of our Master and Savior that was passed on by your apostles.

3-4 First off, you need to know that in the last days, mockers are going to have a heyday. Reducing everything to the level of their puny feelings, they’ll mock, “So what’s happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything’s going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing’s changed.”

5-7 They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God’s word. Then God’s word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world. The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics.

Those scoffers also don’t know who God is. They don’t know Him the way we do. They imagine Him to be made-up, or ever angry, or a sweet but wise bumbling old man. However the world imagines God, we know that they’ve got Him wrong because they don’t know Him the way we know Him and they deny parts of Him to fit Him in their own definition.

We know time is different for God than for us. He has existed since the beginning and we, mere humans can’t conceive of how very long ago that was. God lives in time without end. We live on this earth such a short time compared to eternity. For us waiting a week can seem like forever, 40 weeks seems like eons, and four years may as well be four ages. But it isn’t that way for God. Time is not the same for Him. Verses 8-9 read,

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

God loves us and He is patient. He doesn’t want anyone to die lost. God is Love. Ultimately, His love will manifest in Judgement Day. For now, He holds back judgement, waiting for as many as possible to hear the Gospel had have the opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior.

He is a God of truth and light. That Day will reveal the truth, all of the truth. All our deeds, all our words, everything about us will be divulged. And every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. (Philippians 2:10-11). Verse 10 reads,

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed”

What does all this mean for us? It means that we ought to live like Jesus is coming back very soon. It means that we should live godly Christ glorifying lives. It means we must share the wonderful and beautiful truth of Christ with the world. It means we can hold onto the hope and promise of eternity with our Lord. Verses 11-16 puts it this way,

“Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,”

Remember too that the prophecy surrounding this is fodder for false teachers and false prophets. They love to take it and twist it and put fear into people with it.  They take the parts they can use, throw out the parts that don’t go with their message and use it for their own benefit. It has even become a popular subject for horror films. But we know the truth, and if we don’t yet know it, we need to read the Scriptures for ourselves. Yes, sometimes there are parts that are very deep or otherwise difficult to comprehend, but we have the Holy Spirit to reveal the meaning to us. The lost don’t have Him. That enables us to discern their lies. If we are ignorant of what the Word says we need to change that. Repeatedly in the Bible we are told to pursue knowledge, unlock the mystery of Salvation, seek God, and seek truth. We are told to study the scriptures, meditate on them, and be hearers and doers of them. Verses 16-18 read,

“as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”

Remain diligent in growing in Christ. Remember that includes studying the Bible for yourself, belonging to a group of Believers, and depending on God through the trials and suffering of your life. Follow Jesus. Pursue Love. Seek Truth.

Colossians 1:1-14 A Relationship with God is not a Private Matter.

Colossians Chapter 1 Verses 1-14

Today we begin reading the letter to the church at Colossae from Paul and Timothy. Many in the church were making their faith very private and esoteric, which in turn made it easy to adopt mysticism and asceticism into their spiritual practice and belief. A private faith, and a faith that relies on the self is a faith that can be easily warped by humanitarianism, various philosophies, and other worldly beliefs.

Paul begins his letter to the church with a prayer of thanksgiving and encouragement for them. Verses 4-5 read,

“since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,”

Sincere faith in Christ always manifests in love. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. God is Love. Love is not an empty feeling but is seen, heard, and experienced by those who receive it. The love and community we form with the brethren now is a shadow of the fullness we will experience one day in New Jerusalem. God is keeping it safe for us now as we practice it here on this earth.

That faith based on the truth of the Gospel is not a private or stagnant thing. It changes us. It changes others. It affects the world. Verse 6 says it this way.

“which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,”

The truth comes to us. The Holy Spirit allows us to hear it, understand it, and believe it. But we do not hold it covertly to ourselves. We live it overtly. Our lives testify to it. We display it by changing to the image of Christ. We reveal God by bearing the fruit, the traits of Christ, who is Love. And that is ever increasing. It increases day by day within us as we become more of Christ and less of us. He increases as our lives bare out the truth by our change and affect others to hear, understand, and believe the Gospel of Christ.

In order to mature, to become more like Christ through the transformation of the Holy Spirit, He continues to teach us. We get to know God more and more. Verses 9-10 read,

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

The knowledge, wisdom, and understanding we gain doesn’t stay hidden and private. It bears itself out in our walk. The more we know God and the more we know about Him, the more we want to know God and the more we want to please Him by loving others with good works.

We change when receive Christ. We are transformed when the Spirit enters us. We are revolutionized when the Father restores us to a relationship with Him. That change is not a private inner change but a public obvious total conversion. It reshapes us. It affects everyone around us. The transformation is not always easy but we are not alone. Often the revolution of our heart involves hardship and pain. But we are not alone through that suffering. And even the way we handle the tribulations we face have influence on the world. Even our travails are not meant to be kept secret. Verses 11-12 encourage us.

“May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light”

We can no longer live in the dark of the lies, idolatry, and worldly philosophies. We know there is no “your truth” or “my truth” but THE Truth. The Gospel is one gospel not many. Verses 13-14 read,

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Be careful that your relationship with God is not a private one. Intimacy with the Lord is important, but it is not meant to be experienced solely in the closet. Your relationship with God is meant to be lived out loud, all the time, be it in your closet, on the street, in the sanctuary, or in the workplace. Jesus Christ permeates your entire life. The Holy Spirit saturates every part of your being. The Father should be glorified by every aspect of who you are. God is enigmatic to many of the world but He is not a secret to be kept. He is a mystery to be unlocked. You are the key. Your witness reveals God to the world.

2 John 1:1-3 To Love One Another in Truth, One Must Be Part of a Church.

2 John Verses 1-3

I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of a wonderful living church. My brothers and sisters in Christ are there for me through everything I go through, just as I strive to be there for them through their struggles. Because God is in us, when we come together the Spirit is able to minister to each of us in multilayered ways. He does His work from within us as well as through our fellow believers. Iron sharpens Iron.[1] He uses our brothers and sisters to encourage, exhort, teach, comfort, speak, and otherwise love in all the ways that Jesus loves.

Believer, if you are not part of a local church, you are missing out on a great deal of what it means to follow Jesus. You are missing out on chances to mature, glorify, serve, comfort, and love and be loved.

In John’s second epistle John addressed his letter to the elect lady and her children. Many people believe he was writing to a church. I believe this is probably the case, perhaps a woman who hosted a church in her home and the many spiritual children born from God’s love exercised through it, or perhaps some of her physical children who also were believers.

He begins the letter with the address and an encouragement.

“The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son, in truth and love.”

John loved this lady and her children in truth. That is He loves her genuinely through the truth of Christ. Not just as a spoken token of affection, but concretely. And John added, not only he loved her that way, but also all of those who know the truth, the actuality of Jesus Christ, God, our Father, and His awesome Holy Spirit.

Why and how could he claim that not only he loved her in just a deep way but also speak for the rest of the believers? Because He knew the same Spirit that abided in him, also resided in the other believers. Because the truth, that same truth I just described, abides in us and will be with us forever. That is God! God abides in us because His truth abides in us.[2] We believe what He says about Himself, because He made us able to understand and believe. Because He is in us, we can and do love all the brothers and sisters in Christ. We recognize each other through the Spirit and we love one another. We love one another not through spoken tokens of affection but in truth, in reality.

Solid love is demonstrated through grace, mercy and peace. God gave them to us in love and we share them with one another through Him.

Grace is receiving something good we do not deserve. Grace is forgiveness and acceptance regardless of doing a single thing to warrant it. If we have received grace, we ought to be graceful toward each other. What right do we have to expect someone to merit our love when we did nothing and could do nothing to earn God’s love?

Not receiving something bad that we do deserve is mercy. God doesn’t condemn us, even though we deserve it. How can we blame and punish one another when God doesn’t condemn us?

Peace is a relationship of unity and harmony, joined together as one. We are at peace with God, through Christ. We are one with Him and we are supposed to be that united with one another. We are one body, one Spirit with one God.

I urge you today, if you do not have brothers and sisters in Christ to share your life with to find a local church and join it. Live fully the life God means for you to live. I exhort you, if you are a member of a local body to love your brothers and sisters in truth, fully, actually and actively. You can’t walk as Jesus walked if you walk alone. Jesus didn’t. God Himself exemplifies this is His Trinity. He is Father, Son, and Spirit.

1 John 5:1-12 You are Living Proof of Jesus Christ.

1 John Chapter 5 Verses 1-12

As John began to wrap up his letter, he reiterated some points he had just made. Verses 1-3 read,

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”

If we believe Jesus is the Christ, we are God’s children and that means we have His nature. As God’s children we want what He wants, we act like He acts, not insincerely but because God’s Spirit is in us. We want to keep His commandments and we are able to keep His commandments. As those born of God, made to be like Him. We don’t find it arduous to love God or love our brothers. We do not find it difficult to proclaim Jesus Christ.

For the world loving God in such a wholly dedicated way is incomprehensible because they don’t know Him. For them loving people in such a way that their needs are as or more important than one’s self is too hard and makes no sense. For them declaring Jesus is Christ, the Son of God and King of peace is impossible. They do not have the Spirit of God. But we do.

We are not of the world. The devil can’t have us. We have conquered sin because Jesus defeated sin. We have overcome the trouble of the world because we are no longer children of the world but children of the Lord God of Hosts. Verses 4-5 read,

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”

If you know Jesus is God’s Son, the Messiah, the King of kings, our Peace, then you know you have His Spirit within you. You know that God is who He says He is, because you know Him. Because you have His Spirit in you, you have faith. We have complete assurance, allegiance, and confidence in who God is, what He wants, and in His power to bring about His plans.

When we believe that Jesus is Christ, God does an astounding this for us. He forgives our sin, He makes us new in Him. We are born again. We are cleansed by the water of baptism into new life. We are purified by Jesus’ blood and adopted as God’s own children. When Jesus was pierced by the soldiers at His crucifixion, blood and water rushed out of His side and testified to the people watching that He was the Messiah. It is in His giving us new and eternal life that we testify to who He is.

It is only because of our rebirth that we can live new lives. That rebirth also gives us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. He enables us to live out the commandments God gave us, to love Him, love others, and proclaim Jesus Christ. Verses 6-8 say,

“This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.”

The new life we live, forgiven, no longer living the old way and doing what the world finds difficult and impossible testifies that Jesus is Christ.

The world will swear to lies because they find it too hard to believe God. They do not know Him. But we do. We have His Spirit. And a life glorifying God or manifesting the nature of God is bigger, better, and more perfect than the lies they follow. They call God a liar and choose death over life. But we have Jesus, He is life. He is perfect and eternal life. We have to live that eternal life of love and witness to the truth so that the world can see Him, and come to know Him. Verses 9-12 say it this way,

“If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

You are a living testimony to Christ. You are the proof the world needs in order to believe and accept the gift of eternal life that God has for them. Do not hate them by refusing to live as the evidence of Christ by loving God wholly, loving people as Jesus loved you, and proclaiming to the world that Jesus is Christ, our Savior, the Son of God.

1 John 4:1-6 Don't Believe Everything You Hear.

1 John Chapter 4 Verses 1-6

Prophecy is a beautiful and awesome gift from God. The Holy Spirit gives His children such intimate personal interaction. There are times when all believers use that gift, speaking God’s truth and will to people. There are some people who have the gift, and regularly God gives them words and messages for the people they come into contact with. Always it is to build up the church or to bring people into the kingdom.

There are many people in the world who claim to speak for God, yet the message isn’t Christ. There are even people who say they are Christians and take personal feelings and hopes then falsely masquerade them as prophecy. They use words to build themselves up and reach their own goals. The Lord doesn’t much like that. Lies, no matter how sweetly dressed are still lies. Regardless of the intention whether to comfort or stop a bad decision a lie is a lie. God does not lie. A lie can’t be a firm foundation and cannot build someone up in truth. In the end, a lie causes harm. Harming a person is the opposite of loving them. The truth might hurt, but in love it doesn’t harm. But Believer, you have the Spirit of God within you and you are able to discern God’s word from false spirits. Verses 1-3 read,

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.”

These false prophets are as plentiful today as they were when John wrote this letter. On a social network site where I share this blog each day, I had a respondent who actually called himself God Above. This Person responded to an article as if he were God. His words made my stomach turn and he actually gave commandments to people. I see countless posts each day from people talking about unhindered beliefs and paths to enlightenment. There are a handful of us on the site who keep posting truth, scripture, and Biblical encouragement.

Yesterday, on another social network I had a person follow me who called himself Jesus Holy Christ. I didn’t follow back. I was stunned when I looked at his page, whether or not he was joking and thought it funny that people could follow Jesus by clicking the follow button, I don’t know, but he too claimed to speak for Jesus.

As a Spirit-filled believer of The One True God through Jesus Christ, it was obvious to me that both these people were not filled with God’s Spirit but with spirits of deception. Neither person confessed Jesus. But they like so many other false prophets lead people away from the kingdom of God. People want to believe pretty things. They want to believe that they can earn heaven or that all people will each paradise. Those deceits are keeping people from the truth.

We don’t have to fear those false prophets. We don’t even have to argue with them. We should have nothing to do with them. 2 John 1:9-10 says it like this.

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”

What about the Christian who is spreading false teachings? In Titus 3:10-11 Paul writes,

“As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

We cannot allow them to bring down the church. We can’t allow them to keep us from God’s work. We have to remember that we with Jesus have already conquered the devil. Those people are with devil. They are working with him to keep people away from God. We’ve got to use the discernment God gives us to know the difference between truth and deception. Verses 4-6 give us this encouragement,

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”

We have to keep speaking and living the truth. How else will people hear it? How will they have the opportunity to accept the wonderful gift of salvation? The false prophets will keep pumping out lies and the masses will follow and swallow that garbage because it is wrapped up in an appealing package that tells them they are okay, even good with whatever god they wish to call on. Those lies never convict them. Without conviction a person cannot realize his need of Christ. We have to be the Light of world and reveal Jesus to them and tell them that there is only One God and that Jesus is the only way to Him. We have to speak the truth as the Spirit gives it.

1 John 2:18-29 The Lies of Antichrists are Obvious to Believers. They Do Not Proclaim Christ.

1 John Chapter 2 Verses 18-29

In the next section of John’s letter he warns the believers about the antichrists who started out among them as followers but went out and chose the world, who didn’t declare Jesus as Christ. They are an example of what he spoke about in the previous paragraphs, lovers of the world and haters of the brothers. Verses 18-19 say,

“Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.”

John began by reminding the believers that it is the last hour. You may wonder about references to the last hour and the last days. You may even question that it has been nearly 2,000 years and they got the time wrong. God didn’t get it wrong. The last hour and the last days mean that God’s plan is in its final stage before judgment. When Jesus ascended after His crucifixion and resurrection the new covenant entered the last phase. Satan had a major blow when Jesus rose from the dead. He is fighting hard now to keep people out of the Kingdom of God and to keep believers inefficient. We have to remember that this short life is it when it comes to chances to enter into a relationship with God. Satan knows it. John reminds us.

While it matters that we recognize the antichrist, it also matters that we recognize all those who are working against Christ especially the ones disguised by false light and call themselves Christian. We can’t only focus on the one antichrist. We have to realize there are many proclaiming lies. When they go out and do what they do, it becomes clear to Christians that they are not of God nor us. It isn’t clear to the world though. They identify the hate of false religion with us. We have to stand out and walk together in love. We don’t have to guess at who is a true follower and who is not. We don’t have to speculate about whether a teaching is from the One True Living God. Verses 20-25 tell us why.

“But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.”

God chose you and set you aside for Himself. He gave you all knowledge of the truth. Therefore you are able to discern the truth from the lies. You have the Light and you are called to be the light. The light reveals the hidden things, the lies, and the sin. You can perceive and distinguish the ones who glorify themselves and the ones who glorify Christ. The father of lies can make a lie sound good. He uses flowery words to make it sound to the world that he is upholding goodness and they think he is espousing Jesus. But we know the truth. We believed the Gospel, we know the Gospel, and the Gospel doesn’t change. If they are not proclaiming Jesus as Christ, our Savior, the Son of God, then they are against Christ and with Satan. They cannot have the Holy Spirit within them. They are not children of the Father. Do not follow them. Do not even listen to their teachings.

Those antichrists are always wanting to teach a “new truth” and a “new way.” The truth doesn’t change. God taught you the truth. His Spirit is within you and He is your teacher. He recognizes truth. He discerns lies. So since He is in you, you do too. Verses 26-27 put it this way,

“I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.”

When God anointed or chose you and separated you for His Kingdom, He gave you everything you needed to follow Him. He equipped you. He equipped His followers. He gave you the Truth. He forgave your sins. He gave you the scriptures. He gave you His Word. He gifted you. He gave you brothers and sisters to build each other up. You can trust in Him.

In speaking of the scripture, Paul wrote to Timothy and said,

“while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:13-17).

And the writer of Hebrews gave his benediction to the church reminding them that God brought them from the old life to the new and He would continue to do so. Hebrews 13:20-21 says,

“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

You have God. You are chosen by the Father, forgiven by Jesus Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. You do not need anything more. There are no secret rituals, new rules, anything else. Live in Christ, like Christ as only the Holy Spirit can enable you to do. Live forgiven. Live in pursuit of Love, remembering you have obtained it. We are in the last hour. That hour may continue for 3,000 more years or 3 days. But if you live as the anointed Follower of Christ you are, then you have nothing to be ashamed of. When Jesus comes the antichrists will be revealed as children of Satan and they will be condemned. Verses 28-29 encourage us.

“And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.”

Abide in Christ. Come and stay in His rest. Not sweating under the heavy, difficult, and impossible burden of law and works, but living freely in Love. Accept Jesus’ righteousness is yours and live your life with the evidence of that love borne into action.

John 16:14-15 When Jesus Returned to the Father, the Holy Spirit Came to Us

John Chapter 16 Verses 4-15

Before he gave up His life, Jesus spent the last evening before His arrest teaching the disciples some weightier lessons than He had so far taught them. At the time Jesus’ Crucifixion looked, to His disciples like the worst tragedy that could happen. But we know that Jesus’ sacrifice made the way for hope and joy for us. Starting in verse 4 Jesus explains why.

“But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

The eleven disciples Jesus was preparing to be apostles loved their Rabbi, Lord, and friend deeply. They were truly dismayed at the thought of His looming death. They didn’t want to believe that it would really happen. But Jesus told them it was a good thing, because once He went to the Father, the Helper would be sent.

It is an advantage that Jesus returned to the Father and the Holy Spirit came. But why? While Jesus was with them, The Holy Spirit had been with them but not within them and not the way He would be. (John 14:16-18).  But once Jesus made a way for salvation the Spirit of God could commune with believers in a new and intimate way. Jesus described some of what the Holy Spirit in would do in verses 8-11.

“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”

The Holy Spirit is the one who makes the guilty aware of his wrongs in order for him to come to a place where he can acknowledge his need of Christ. We can point fingers and blame until the cows come home and we will never have an effect on an unbeliever’s heart. It is the Holy Spirit and only the Holy Spirit that can bring a person to faith. He is the one who makes it possible for us to follow Christ and live honorably even though Jesus is not physically walking the earth. He conforms us to Jesus’ image. And He reminds us that the world will be judged and although Satan is defeated, there are countless souls who will be judged alongside Him. He loves them and doesn’t want any of them to perish. The Holy Spirit made sure that the disciples remembered all of Jesus words so they could teach and spread the Gospel. He also continued to teach them the profound truths of God as He continues to do today. Verses 12-13 read,

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

Just as Jesus did nothing and said nothing without the Father, it is the same of the Holy Spirit. He teaches us and directs us. He illuminates truth to us and allows us to understand the word. He showed the future to the apostles and He shows us too. He reveals to us the profound mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

Verses 14-15 read,

“He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

The Holy Spirit perfectly reflects Jesus. He is the Spirit of God. He reveals God to us and through us. Not only does He show us who Jesus is, He makes us into Jesus’ image. Even as He conforms us to the likeness of Christ, He endows us with Jesus’ attributes, authority, and gifts. The Holy Spirit makes it possible for you and me to do what Jesus did, to love as Jesus did and bring people to a relationship with God. The Holy Spirit is God and He is in you, Believer.
