Esther 8 God Gives You His Riches and His Seal for His Will and His Glory

The Great Commission of Jesus Christ Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
Esther 8
The exciting narrative of Esther continues today but first let me recap chapter seven’s events.  In chapter 7 Haman’s evil plot against the Jewish people was finally revealed to the king and he was hanged on gallows he had built to kill his enemy Mordecai. Chapter 8 begins there. Verses 1-2 read,
On that day King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her. 2 And the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.
The reward Esther and Mordecai each received was very nice. Haman had been very wealthy and his estate now belonged to Esther. He had been very powerful and now his power and position belonged to Mordecai. God gives us these things too. He has limitless riches and treasures and He showers them down on us. 2 Corinthians 8:9 reads,
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
Believers do not need to seek money, we trust in God’s provision. We trust that our fellow believers trust Him as well and we are generous with one another. When we have, we give; when we need, we receive. Haman spent his time on earth seeking money not righteousness. He hated and used his money for hate. Esther spent her time seeking justice, seeking God. She loved and God blessed her. 2 Corinthians 8:14-15 says it this way,
your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”
Like the king gave Mordecai his signet ring which allowed Mordecai to act and proclaim in the king’s name, The Lord gives us authority to pray and speak in His name. The signet ring is the king’s seal. It declared that Mordecai belonged to the king and spoke with his authority. We have the Lord Himself as our seal, The Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 1:19-22 says it like this,
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. 20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
To speak and act in Jesus’ name means we act in accordance with His will and whatever we do or say as His representative, in His name will be done. In John 14:12-15Jesus said it this way,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Haman used the signet ring for his own will. But it was not meant for his will, his glory, or his exaltation. It was meant to allow him to carry out the king’s will. The Holy Spirit indwells us, not so we can exalt ourselves and give ourselves glory but to glorify The Lord God, King of kings.
But the problem still remained. The day was quickly approaching when the people in King Ahasuerus’ 127 provinces would rise up and attack the Jews as they had been ordered to do by Haman’s edict. While Haman had made decisions and then told the king, Mordecai and Esther would not abuse the power and position they had in that way. Verses 3-8 read,
Then Esther spoke again to the king. She fell at his feet and wept and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan of Haman the Agagite and the plot that he had devised against the Jews. 4 When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, 5 Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, “If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seems right before the king, and I am pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. 6 For how can I bear to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?” 7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he intended to lay hands on the Jews. 8 But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king's ring, for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked.”
Esther did not assume her will was also the king’s will. She entreated him, she let him know her will but asked for his. Mordecai had the signet ring, he could have written any edict he chose but he knew who the king was and where his power came from and so he waited for the king to make his command. The king gave Mordecai permission to write the proclamation required to save the Jews from annihilation. Verses 9-14 continue,
The king's scribes were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day. And an edict was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews, to the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. 10 And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king's signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud, 11 saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, children and women included, and to plunder their goods, 12 on one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. 13 A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, being publicly displayed to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies. 14 So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king's command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.
The proclamation of the king’s will, his commandments do no good if the people are not told. So once the decree was written, it was translated into the many languages of the people of the provinces and then taken out to each and every province, announced and placed where it could be read. You and I are the kings and queens of God our King of kings. We know His will that all people come to know Him (2 Peter 3:9). We can’t keep it to ourselves. We carry out His will, go out and tell them. We’ve been given the commission (the command, charge, and authority) to go out and tell the whole world. Jesus said it just before He ascended to Heaven in Matthew 28:18-20
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Mordecai and Esther wanted salvation from Haman’s evil plot for the Jewish people. They asked the king who wanted the same thing because he loved Esther. As servants of The Lord, we want what He wants and we will find that often what we want is also what God wants for us. I want nothing more than the people I love as well as people the world over to know God and be saved from Satan’s evil scheme. In God’s great mercy, He made the way for that Salvation through Jesus Christ. In His great wisdom, He gave us the ability to carry out His redemption through The Holy Spirit. He lifted us up and gave us honor, made us kings and queens and gave us His authority for His will. What an honor, what a reason to celebrate. Have you celebrated the salvation you’ve received today?  The joy you exclaim speaks volumes about the Lord. Verses 15-17 read,
Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple, and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. 16 The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor. 17 And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

Believer, do you understand the privilege and honor God has given you? He has made you royalty. He has saved you and given you His Seal. He has empowered you to carry out His will. When He declared you His own and laid His sword on your heart, He did so in order for you to be able to take action. You can’t do that if you stay in your pew, in your closet, or under your bed. You do that by riding through the streets wearing your royal robes, rejoicing in God’s goodness, and proclaiming His love and salvation to the world.

Psalm 72 Glorify Jesus the Righteous King

Psalm 72

This psalm of Solomon is a prayer to The Lord as Solomon became king in his father’s place. But his prayer holds more meaning than a simple prayer for himself. As believers we can take this prayer to encourage ourselves as well. And it is messianic prophecy as Solomon describes the ideal king, Jesus. Verses 1-7 describe the Righteous King.

“Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to the royal son!
2 May he judge your people with righteousness,
    and your poor with justice!
3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
    and the hills, in righteousness!
4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy,
    and crush the oppressor!

5 May they fear you while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth!
7 In his days may the righteous flourish,
and peace abound, till the moon be no more!”

True righteousness comes only from God. Jesus lived, died, and resurrected to give us His righteousness. The Holy Spirit works in us to make us more like Jesus and so more righteous every day. And The Father calls us to be holy as He is holy.

Jesus is the ultimate Judge and He is our justice. He makes us righteous so that we can be reconciled to God, know Him, and have a relationship with Him. Jesus cares deeply about the poor, the widows, the orphans, and the prisoners. He has compassion for all the needy. And He avenges us against the enemy who oppresses the people. We may not prosper financially or in any way that the world would notice but we prosper spiritually and we prosper in the Kingdom of God.

One day the children of God, the faithful followers of Jesus Christ will be forever with Him in the mansions of Mount Zion instead of the tents of this world. There will be no sun to light the day nor moon to light the night. The Glory of God, Jesus Himself will be our light. (Revelation 21:22-24).

We are royalty as well. We are righteous kings and queens in Jesus. He has given us His name in adoption. We walk with His authority and that means we walk with His love and mercy. If we are to be like the King of kings then we walk with compassion and justice for the oppressed, the poor, the needy, the widow, and the orphan. We love them as Jesus loves them. We want the lost to know peace with God. We want the tyrannized to know freedom. We want the persecuted to know justice. Jesus is our Peace, Freedom, and Justice.

Solomon wanted to be a good king. He wanted to rule well. We too want to be the best royal priests we can be. When the Lord asked Solomon what he desired most in order to be a righteous king, Solomon asked for wisdom. God granted him that as well as wealth, long life, and military victory. (1 Kings 3, 1 Kings 4:29-34). He gives us wisdom as well when we ask. He is happy to grant us the gifts that will make our walk that much more glorifying, loving, and effective. James 1:5 reads,

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

And 1 Corinthians 12:

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way.”

Love is that more excellent way. (1 Corinthians 13). We are to love as Jesus loves us. We do that by being the royal children of God that we are called to be. We manifest the traits of Jesus described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, love, patience, kindness, humility, justice, joy in righteousness, faith, and steadfastness, the fruit of the Spirit.

Jesus is Judge and King over all the earth. There is nothing He does not have sovereign authority over. Verses 8-11 read,

“May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the Rive] to the ends of the earth!
9 May desert tribes bow down before him,
and his enemies lick the dust!
10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands
    render him tribute;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba
    bring gifts!
11 May all kings fall down before him,
    all nations serve him!”

Every person on earth whether they acknowledge Jesus as Lord or not must submit to His rule. One day every knee will bow to Him. One day every person will acknowledge that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of all. Philippians 2:8-10 reads,

“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Even nature must obey Jesus. He created the world and the world concedes to His authority. Jesus spoke and storms stopped and seas calmed. (Mark 4:35-41).The Lord spoke and trees grew and trees died. (Jonah 4:5-11, Mark 11:12-25). He even gave us the authority to command nature as His royal and righteous ambassadors. Mark 11:22-25 reads,

“And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

We are not arrogant in our royalty. We like Jesus are humble. We don’t boast or take pride in great works, because they are not ours, they are Jesus’ works. We know that we are completely in need of God. We can’t even breathe without Him. We can’t have faith without Him. (Isaiah 42:5). The Lord has mercy on those who need it and ask for it. The Lord died for sinners, not for righteous men. A king has no kingdom if people do not submit to his authority. So we submit to Jesus, our Righteous King. He frees the prisoners, provides for the needy, and feeds the hungry. Verses 12-15 describe Him.

“For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.
13 He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight.”

These verses describe Jesus. Do they describe us? They should. As His followers we should have His compassion, mercy, and longing for justice. We should act in Jesus’ love for people. His love wasn’t lip service it was action. He brought people to salvation. He healed, He spent time, He taught, and He served. He is our King, we should exemplify Him.

Do we long for His name to be known throughout the earth? Do we cry out “Long live the King!” Are we making disciples of every nation? Verses 15-19 read,

“Long may he live;
may gold of Sheba be given to him!
May prayer be made for him continually,
and blessings invoked for him all the day!
16 May there be abundance of grain in the land;
    on the tops of the mountains may it wave;
    may its fruit be like Lebanon;
and may people blossom in the cities
like the grass of the field!
17 May his name endure forever,
his fame continue as long as the sun!
May people be blessed in him,
    all nations call him blessed!

18 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    who alone does wondrous things.
19 Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory!
Amen and Amen!

Believer, you and I are the glory of God! You and I are the ones to make Jesus’ name famous. Our ancestors have passed away and passed the job onto us. David worshipped God. He brought light to Israel. When David died the torch was passed to Solomon. We carry that torch now. Let us light the world on fire for Jesus. Verse 20 says,

“The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.”

David could no longer be the king. That job fell to Solomon. Now it is we who must take on the responsibility and glorify The Lord.

Psalm 8 How Majestic is The LORD!

5/28/2015

Psalm 8

This psalm is one of pure praise and unadulterated worship to The Lord. Verse 1 reads,

“O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.”

There is no better praise for God than His own name. Here His name is described as majestic. He is King, Lord of not only the heavens but over the earth and all of creation. He is King of kings, royal, magnificent, and resplendent. He is Sovereign.

He is Almighty, so powerful that He can use the weakest and most fragile and still His power is colossal and great. There is none who can stand against Him. He illustrates His power over and over using the small to accomplish the immense. When David was only a boy, too small for armor God used him and a slingshot to kill Goliath and terrify the Philistines. Verse 2 puts it this way,

“Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.”

He has done it again and again. He uses us even with our flaws and frailty. It is His strength, not ours that matters. God is powerful beyond the words I can find to describe Him. His creation declares His might. Verses 3-4 say,

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?’

In all His magnificent splendor and strength He still loves us. He more than loves us, He cares about us. He thinks of us. He remembers us. And because He created us in His own image He gave us privileges that no other part of His creation was given. He gave us spirits, souls that can love Him in return. He gave us wills that can choose freely to reciprocate His love, to worship, or to reject Him. Not even the angels have that. And He gave us dominion that is authority over every living thing on earth, in the seas, and in the sky. Not because He needs us to take care of the earth, but because He made us like Himself and chooses to give us that power. Verses 5-8 read,

“Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.”

What a delightful God, loving Father, wonderful Savior, and magnificent Spirit He is. Consider His creation. It is breathtaking in its beauty, astonishing in its complexity, and unfathomable in its immensity. What can we say to praise Him? Verse 9 says it,

“O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Remember who you are Child of Almighty God. You are His masterpiece. You are His noble son or daughter. You have authority to carry out the will of your Father the King. You have the power of His mighty name. You bear His image. You are His glory. Be who He called you to be.

There is no better praise for God than His own name. He gave us His name when He adopted us and we praise him by glorifying Him through exercising His authority and love.

1 Peter 2:13-25 Submission to Authority is not Like this World, it is Like Jesus

1 Peter Chapter 2 Verses 13-25

We are sojourners among the lost. We are exiles in this world. When people see us, we should be recognizable as children of the Living God and citizens of Heaven. We are distinguished as Christians because we are conformed to the image of Christ, and everywhere and in everything we glorify Him. The culture of our home is unlike the culture of the world. We are not reactionary, we are revolutionary. We do not treat people the way they deserve to be treated, we remember Christ and treat them the way our God asks us to, with love and grace.

That includes people who are cruel, people who yield power unreasonably, and those in the government whether we like their politics or not. We submit to the Lord and in that deference we remember He is in control and He gave them their office. Respect for those in authority is respect and trust for God.

Verses 13-15 read,

“Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

It is unusual to have that esteem for those in authority over us, especially a government we don’t agree with. But in doing that, we show how different we are. We venerate God by respecting and submitting to authority. People see the culture of the Kingdom of God when we do good. They can’t fairly say anything bad about Jesus, when we walk in obedience and goodness.

We walk as sanctified children of God by choice. We are not burdened by rules. We are not oppressed by the threat of punishment or condemnation. So we are free to love people, do the noble thing, the right thing, and the loving thing. We are free to emulate Christ. That makes us uncommon, separate, and divergent from the masses. We belong to Christ, not this world. Verses 16-18 say it this way,

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.”

Jesus didn’t have to stand in front of Herod while he cruelly derided Him and quietly take it, but He did. He did because He loved Herod and Herod had been given a position of authority. Did Christ’s humility hurt Him? No, He knew the truth, He knew where the real power was and Who held it. When Jesus stood in front of Pilate knowing He would be beaten, He remained quiet and humble. He told Pilate, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.” (John 19:11).

Being humble enough to let people have the upper hand is not the way the world works. We live in a society that glorifies power, superiority, and dominance. But the ethos of the Kingdom of God is one of humility, grace, and kindness. It is one of imitating Christ and turning the other cheek. Verses 19-21 say it this way,

“For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”

Of course the key here is that we must do good. Suffering because we sinned or didn’t plan well is not special and doesn’t call attention to the King of kings, even when we withstand it with steadfastness as we should. But suffering for the good we have done is suffering on Christ’s account and that does glorify our God.

Jesus was good. He was completely blameless. He had all the authority and dominion of God. He could have struck Pilate down, He could have smote Herod, He could have destroyed the Roman soldiers who beat Him. But He didn’t. He didn’t even tell them that He had armies of angels and all the power of God at His disposal. He took it graciously because of His love for us and for them. Even as he agonized on the cross, He was gracious as He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34).

His grace saved us. His submission to earthly authority made it possible us to know Him and be called sons of God. Verses 23-25 read,

“He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

That grace is impossible for the world to display or even grasp. It is foreign to the lost to not hate those who hate, to not fight back or even threaten. But we can because we trust God. We know the Lord loves us, has a plan, loves the one who hates us, and will judge all of us. When we exhibit the grace He asked us to, people see Jesus in us. The strength of the Holy Spirit emanates from us when we bow down in submission, love, and grace to authority in obedience to our Lord.

John 17:1-5 Jesus Endured the Cross For You

John Chapter 17 Verses 1-5

Jesus loves you so much that He was able to face the horror of His arrest, trial, and death sentence with joy. He withstood terrible suffering and indignity with joy because He kept His eyes on the results. Because He was not about Himself about the Father.

Before Jesus’ arrest which He knew was imminent, Jesus prayed. John recorded the prayer for us. Verses 1-3 read,

“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

Jesus knew His death was looming and rather than focus on the pain it would bring Him, He focused on the purpose of it, the glory it would bring the Father, and the eternal life it would bring to us. He could stop it from happening at any moment. Although He was completely human, He was also God and the Father had given Him authority over life. He could display the immense power of His divinity at any time but His love for us and for the Father was too great to let Him do that. His desire for God’s will was higher and bigger than the angst of His trial and execution.

Jesus glorified or revealed the Father in everything He did in His life. Every word He spoke was from the Father, every act He did was because of the Father. (John 8:28). Jesus was now about to reveal the Father in the ultimate way. Jesus kept His eyes on God and God’s will instead of focusing on the suffering He would experience.

The Father’s will is driven by His love for you and me. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Because God loves us so deeply, He sent His only Son, a part of Himself to us. Jesus glorified God through His whole life and then suffered the cross so that we could have eternal life. And Jesus kept that in mind too. Jesus thought about us and the eternal life we would receive and it comforted Him. He loves you so much that He was willing to undergo a death that has been described as one of the most gruesome thinkable.

Jesus gave up His life willingly and bore that horrific shame because He wanted you and me to have eternal life. He could stomach it because He also knew that He would soon be returning to the Father, to the eternity He already knew. He kept His eyes off Himself and on the results. One of those results was Heaven. In verses 4-5 Jesus prayed,

“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

Jesus sacrificed the awesome splendor and brilliance of Heaven to step down and live as a man. But He knew what awaited Him. He lived His life glorifying the Father and soon the Father would glorify Him, lift Him up and bring Him back into the fullness of God again. Jesus didn’t suddenly appear at His conception or at His birth. Jesus has existed from the beginning. He was God and with God before the world. The world was made through Him. (John 1:1-5). He is the word of God, the will of God manifested and He was about to demonstrate God’s love and will in a great, terrible, and beautiful way.

I cannot imagine suffering more severe than what Jesus faced through His trial and crucifixion. He withstood it by choice and with joy because He knew that He would be in Heaven with the Father, because glorifying God was much more important than His comfort, and because He loves us enough to give us eternal life. Hebrews 12:1-3 reads,

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.”

Whatever you go through here for Jesus, you can endure it. You can take your eyes off yourself and focus them on Jesus. Jesus endured for you. He is in you, helping you through everything you are going through. You can remember that you are glorifying God. You can look around you at the lost who don’t know the love of God yet, and persist for them.

Jesus promised you would suffer if you follow Him. But He suffered first. He showed us how to endure it. Look to His example and persevere because He did it for you, because you want to glorify Him, because you love people as He loves, and because you know the hope that awaits you.

John 5:24-29 Life Comes through Jesus, the Judge of All

John Chapter 5 Verses 24-29

Jesus continues to teach about His relationship to the Father in these verses. We ended yesterday with verse 24 but I want to go back and include it again with today’s verses.

Verses 24-26 read,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

Jesus is the only way to God and to Salvation. It is faith in Him, belief that He is who He says He is, (the Son of God), and submission to Him as Lord that allows a person to be saved, to pass from being one of the walking dead to being alive in Him. The Father is the source of life and He gave Jesus the authority to grant life where He will. He gave Jesus all judgment and He gave Him life.

Eternal life doesn’t begin the day our bodies die. Eternal life begins at the moment you demonstrate your faith by calling Jesus Lord. It begins when you hear His voice call you to life. But there is more to it. Jesus alludes to the Day of Judgment, His second coming. One day Jesus will return and all those who believed and died will rise up from the grave and meet Him in Heaven and immediately following all those who still live will be caught up and move from mortal life to eternal life in a moment. At that moment it will be too late for everyone else. They will see for themselves that Jesus is real, alive, and awesome. They will fall to their knees. But they will have to face judgment. There are no scales, no tallies, and no hoping they were good enough. They either were sealed with the Holy Spirit or they were not. Verses 27-29 put it like this,

“And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”

We do not know when that day will come. It might be this afternoon, tomorrow, ten years from now, or 156 years from now. But we do know it is coming. We read earlier that God loves people and wants the whole world to know Him and be saved. When Jesus comes, there will be no more hemming and hawing. When a person dies their earthly death, time to choose has ended. Do you love people like Jesus does? Do you love the Father so much you want what He wants? Is the Father’s will yours also?

The world is lost and doesn’t know it. People are searching for the truth and taking anything that sounds good to them instead. People need to see the truth of Jesus in you. One day He will be revealed to everyone as He returns to judge the earth. But right now He can be revealed in you.

John 5:19-24 Jesus is the Perfect Son of God

John Chapter 5 Verses 19-24

After Jesus healed the man at the pool of Bethesda, the Jewish leadership were appalled that He referred to God as His Father. It incited a fury in them against Him. But Jesus took the opportunity to teach. Verses 19-20 read,

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.”

Jesus, the Son of God, the King of kings, and Lord of lords, said that He was completely dependent on the Father to act. If Jesus was that reliant on God, how much more so should we be? Jesus sees the Father not only through history, creation, and scripture but He sees Him through His deep relationship with Him. They are united. Whatever the Father does, the Son does the same.

Believer, you and I have a relationship with the Father through the Son. We are given the chance to know Him deeply as well. We, like the world have history and scripture which give a person a superficial knowledge of God. But more so we have a relationship that allows us to commune with the Father in such a way that day by day we know Him more. We get to see different facets of His personality, we come to understand His love in such a profound and meaningful way. He becomes our Father too.

But we also have the Holy Spirit, God’s own Spirit within us. He continually teaches us and guides us. He also makes the way open for us to know God more deeply. He reveals God to us. We read the scripture with a greater understanding. We hear His voice. We not only see evidence of Him in creation but we recognize Him throughout His creation. The Spirit works in us persistently to make us into the image of Christ.

We have Jesus. We have His example of who we could be as we are made more and more into His image. We have Him within us, united with us. He abides in us as we abide in Him and He abides in the Father. As we depend fully on God, the Father, Son, and Spirit we are able to reflect Him and express Him to the world who does not know Him the same way we are given ability to know Him.

The Father was revealed in Jesus through His actions. And Jesus is revealed in us through our actions. Jesus told the people He was going to do greater things than heal people in order to demonstrate the Father to them. He referred not only to the many miracles He did, but also to His ultimate deed of taking on the sin of the entire world, dying on the cross, and resurrecting three days later. He was talking about our redemption as His greatest work.

Jesus made it possible for us to enter into a relationship with the Father. And He made it possible for us, in following Him and doing what He did to be a part of the salvation plan. We can do the works Jesus did. You and I can demonstrate the Father’s love for people too so that they will marvel. When they marvel at the beauty of what God can do, they will want to know Him too. You and I cannot save them, but Jesus can. We can be a conduit to Jesus for them.

Jesus came to give life to the world. We were dead before Jesus. We had no hope before Jesus. Now we are not merely alive but we have eternal life. Do you see what an amazing miracle that is? Do you marvel at the immensity of it? Verses 21-24 read,

“For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Jesus is the only way to a relationship with the Father. God gave judgment to Jesus. In order to honor God we have to honor Jesus. Without submission to the Son, one can’t submit to the Father. As Jesus relies wholly on the Father, we must rely wholly on Jesus. When we do that, Jesus gives us the miracle of eternal life. Not just living forever, but living on an entirely new plane of existence here and now. We pass from shadow life in the world to full bright life in the Kingdom of God.

Ask yourself if you are truly dependent on God for all your actions. Do you do all that you see Him doing? Is your whole life about expressing Jesus so that you are reflecting and glorifying God to the world? Are you a light as Jesus is the Light? Are people marveling at your actions and conduct as you demonstrate Jesus to them? Is what you are doing leading people to want to know God more deeply? Or is your light so dim it is indistinguishable from the shadows of the world?

Ephesians 6:5-9 Your Boss May Be a Tyrant but You Should Treat Her as if She was Jesus

11/5/2014

Ephesians Chapter 6 Verses 5-9

How’s your relationship with those in authority over you? How’s your relationship with those over whom you hold power or sway? God has something to say about these relationships, just like He had something to say about marriage and parent-child relationships. And like those, this earthly situation teaches us about heavenly things.

Even if you do not have a job, you probably have to nod to someone else’s control in some areas of your life. And regardless if you hold a supervisory position you likely have people who turn to you for decisions and direction from time to time.

Verse 5 reads,

“Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ,”

That is asking a lot! You are supposed to obey your boss the way you would Christ? Has Paul met your boss? She is arrogant, knows not even half as much as you do, and only got her position because of nepotism. You’re right, your boss is not perfect. Neither are you. God gave her that position and He gave her that authority. Proverbs 8:15-16 read,

“By me kings reign,
    and rulers decree what is just;
16 by me princes rule,
and nobles, all who govern justly.”

He tells us we are to submit to the powers He puts in place 1 Peter 2:13-14 read,

“Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good”

Just a few verses down 1 Peter 2:18-19 read,

“Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.”

So even if your boss is evil incarnate, even if she makes your life a living hell, God expects you to obey her.

Ephesians 6 goes on to say that you are not only supposed to act nice, humble, and obedient in front of your boss, you are supposed to strive do to well and please her when she can’t see you. Verses 6-7 put it like this,

“not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,”

Recognizing that it is God who gave her the position and power allows you to see that serving her is really serving God. What can your humble attitude teach her? What can your consistent kindness and enthusiastic obedience demonstrate to her? Although it is difficult to serve a tyrannical person, it is hard to be kind to someone who views you as less than themselves, God promises your sacrifice will be honored. It may never be noted by your boss, but God does see it. Verse 8 reads,

“knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.”

God isn’t saying, every day that you are nice to you the boss you’ll come home to a lollipop, He is saying that the good you do has a return and a reward. God is paying attention. The world is paying attention. Maybe your boss will not ever care about your good attitude. Or maybe she will note it and you will be given a better position, higher pay and a better relationship with her. Perhaps your good attitude will have her or your co-workers asking about Jesus. Maybe you are storing treasures in Heaven.

When your boss is awful to you, when you are punished unjustly and you react with humility and goodness there is a reward not only for you but for everyone watching. 1 Peter 2:20-21 says,

“For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.”

You are the example of Christ to the world. Your interactions, responses, and attitude can lead people to Him or away from Him.

It is not only those who are over us we have to treat well. We have to make sure that we glorify God in our interactions with those under us as well. Verse 9 says,

“Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.”

Paul doesn’t have to spell it all out, he says, “Masters, do the same to them.” Treat them as if they are Jesus with sincerity, do the will of God and please God. Paul adds “stop your threatening” to his statement. I think that many of us in trying to exert authority, really try to wield control and revert to threats to get our way. Do you do that? Is your management more like bullying? Have you intimidated someone with punishment to exercise dominance? That isn’t how God works with us and He doesn’t want us to oppress someone into docility and submission.

God warns of the real consequences that happen if we follow Him. He gives us free will to choose to follow or go our own way. He then lets the natural consequences take effect. He also forgives completely and freely every single transgression, every sin from bad thought to serial murder just for the asking.

He is merciful. He expects the same of us. God doesn’t think Billy Graham is a better person than Charles Manson. They are both the same except that Billy Graham accepted the free gift of grace and when God looks at Mr. Graham He sees him through Jesus’ blood. There is no preference or favoritism with God. The rules are the same for everyone! You believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and you are saved whether you are a heroin addicted hooker or a nun feeding the poor in India.

He asks us to be merciful as well. We are to treat people equally without bias. One person doesn’t get our favor, while another gets ignored if we truly seek to please God. God doesn’t pick and choose whom He will save. He gives every person the same choice and same opportunity.

Glorify God by showing the same fairness and open-mindedness to every person you come into contact with, especially those under your authority. Remember who gave that position to you.

Ephesians 3:14-21 God is bigger and more powerful than you can grasp.

Ephesians 3 14-21

This amazing section consists of two sentences in eight verses, but they are intense. There is so much depth I imagine I could spend days or weeks on them and not extract all the treasure they hold. I encourage to read the section for yourself and see that you may mine different gold than I have. I will spend a little time on each verse today and quarry a nugget or two to encourage us through the day and give us even more reason to praise the Lord.

Verses 14-15 read,

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,”

We worship and submit to God because of the salvation He gave us and is offering to anyone who asks. He is our Father. We are named for God, Jesus. We are in His Family, adopted to be His heirs. Because we are named for Him, we represent Him and our family throughout our lives. What we do and how we react is reflected on our brothers and sisters all over the world. It is reflected on God. We are Christians, we are Children of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and we have a name in Heaven that we don’t know yet. (Revelation 2:17). Names have meaning. In the Bible, people’s names said something about them, their personality, their purpose, or their relationship with God. So our names also have meaning, the name we will receive in Heaven, the name that identifies us as Believers, and the name that denotes us as belonging to God. These names are an honor and we should reflect that honor.

Verse 16 reads,

“that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,”

God has an endless depth of triumph, brilliance, and beauty and from that glory He strengthens us through His Spirit. Whatever we go through, no matter how weak we feel, He is with us and His power gives us the strength to endure. His presence is the power that allows us to persevere and overcome every obstacle and further glorifies God. He is not glorified when we depend on our own limited strength. He is glorified when we let Him be our strength and our power. His strength is immeasurable. It never ends. It never gives in. He gives that might to us. It is God who makes us potent.

Verse 17 reads,

“so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,”

Because we submitted to the Father and He gave us a new name and identity and the Spirit indwelled us with strength and faith, Christ abides in the essence of our being, our hearts. Jesus who is the personification of perfect love lives in us and gives us a new foundation. Our Cornerstone, our Rock gives us the base and substance of love. We are able to love like He loves because of His love. We can love because He loved us first.

Verses 18-19 say,

“may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”

It takes that power, it requires the Spirit to even begin to grasp the vastness and completeness of Christ’s love. Because we have the Holy Spirit we can realize it, but without Him, no one can know it. And we can never completely know it in the present. So we always seek it more and first. Dioko Agape.

In seeking His perfect, abundant, and infinite love God fills us with His fullness. We are filled with His Spirit, with His glory, with His desires and joys. We share in His nature, gifts, and power. We are filled with His richness, completeness, and abundance. We are not simply given a portion or shadow but are stuffed to overflowing with the fullness of God.

Verses 20-21 read,

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

The lives we live glorify God forever and through every generation after us. His power is infinite. He can do more than we can ever dream and more than we can consider asking for. Nothing is outside the realm of possibilities with God. We don’t even know what to ask for, but God knows what is best for us and what will bring about our transformation and His glory. So He works within us and that work is huge. Look back at your salvation. Consider your transformation. Think about the miracles, provision, and protection over your life and your heart. The power that did that is incalculable. The authority and force that accomplished that is within you. God, the Holy Spirit in your spirit, God, the Son, Jesus Christ in your core has done that.

What more does He have in store for you? I encourage you to continue pursuing to know Him more, to carry on seeking to love Him more and love others with His love, and to take joy in His fullness by making use of it and glorifying God everywhere and every moment.

Ephesians 2:1-10 You are walking dead and you don't deserve salvation.

10/25/2014

Ephesians 2:1-10

Before you believed, you were the walking dead. You had no hope or future. You were not only in danger of being devoured by the monsters of this world, you actually followed them and were like them. Verses 1-3 say,

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”

Unbeliever, do you say are not a child of wrath and you are basically a good person? What is being good? How many lies can you tell and still be good? How many people can you hurt and still be decent? How many times can you pass the needy and still be virtuous? Are you sure you haven’t tipped those scales toward bad yet?

In God’s Kingdom there are no scales, no one is good enough. Human nature, often called the flesh in the Bible makes us inherently selfish. We want to be happy. In pursuing our happiness we do all kinds of things such as lying, ignoring other’s needs, caring about our own desires more than someone else’s, and even harming ourselves and others. But God didn’t leave us to our flesh. He made a way. Verses 4-5 read,

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—“

God is merciful! What is mercy? It is a term we hear often, especially in the Christian community but have you considered what it means? It means compassionate forgiving treatment toward someone who could be treated harshly. Mercy is kindness toward a desperate person, especially a person whom you have power over. God is rich in mercy. He loves us. He loves you now, no matter how bad you are, or even if you swear He isn’t real. Even if you hate Him, He loves you.

Everyone, believer or not is sinful. But to the person who says, “I believe, Jesus is in charge of my life” He raises him from the dead and makes him alive with Christ. Believer, you are alive with a new heart, mind, and soul. You are no longer without a future. You are no longer walking this earth a dead man. You still struggle with the flesh. You still sin. You still do all those things that focus on the self. But now with The Holy Spirit within you giving you life, you also are able to forgo the self and focus on Jesus, whose focus is on others. You are able to love them in a way you didn’t even know existed when you were dead. God did that for you, not because you were good, not because you work hard, or give to the poor, or act. He saved you because He is graceful.

It is by grace you are saved. So what is grace? I hear you, Christian saying it as if you are repeating your childhood multiplication tables, you rote answer is “unmerited favor.” And it is, but what is that? It is unmerited, undeserved, unjustified, unwarranted, unearned. You did nothing to earn it, deserve it, or even pay it back! Salvation is a gift that was bought with the steep price of Jesus’ blood. That is a big deal.

Imagine you are poor, go back to Charles Dickens’ days and you are a street urchin, you don’t know your parents, you haven’t eaten in 3 days, and you have pneumonia that will kill you unless you get medical attention fast. Now imagine a wealthy kind man sees you and your situation. You say to him, “Help me, Sir, please.” He pulls out of his pocket a diamond bigger than your fist and gives it to you. Then he takes you to his home calls his doctor, treats you, heals you, feeds you, adopts you, and gives you a home. You did nothing at all to deserve that kindness. He saved you. All you can do to repay him is to live well and do for others what he did for you. That is grace.

But God went even further! He didn’t just raise you form death, which would have been enough. He didn’t only call you blameless and forgive every wrong you ever committed or will commit, He made you partners with Christ. You can’t earn Heaven. You can’t work for Salvation. You have nothing to boast about yourself and everything to brag about Christ. He saved you for a reason. Verses 6-7 read,

“and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus”

Salvation is not the only mercy and grace you received at the moment you believed. He continues to lavish you with His amazing love and kindness. While your good works can’t earn you favor, they are what you were created to do. He made you specifically to do great things for Him. Not because you are good or talented but because you were created, chosen, and shaped by God to do them. Verses 8-10 read,

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
