Life of David Part 5: You are Not Meant to Walk Alone

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13
You are not meant to walk alone. You were made in the image of God and one aspect of God’s being is that He is relational. You were made for relationships. You were made for a relationship with God and relationships with other people. David had Jonathan. The two were knit together, forever joined by God. They were not just friends; they were closer than brothers. Trouble didn’t separate them, but carried them through some very terrible times. Proverbs 17:17 describes this kind of friendship.
A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for adversity.

1 Samuel 20 describes how Jonathan, who just could not believe his father really meant to kill David, stuck by David’s side and learned of his father’s murderous intentions. David was expected to attend the three-day Festival of the New Moon with the king at his table. But he didn’t dare because Saul was determined to kill him.  Although Jonathan was naïve to his father’s state of mind, he remembered his covenant to David and the LORD and remained steadfastly loyal to him. He was certain David was wrong and wanted to prove it to him. David was certain Jonathan was wrong and wanted him to understand how dangerous Saul had become. Verses 1-4 read,
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” 2 And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.” 3 But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”4 Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”
The two hatched a plan. If Saul asked about David’s absence from the festival, Jonathan would tell his father that David was in Bethlehem to sacrifice. If Saul reacted angrily, Jonathan would know he wanted to kill David, if not then David would be safe.
Well of course, Saul was angry and this time his anger was directed at Jonathan as well as David since he understood the deep bond they had. He realized Jonathan had no plans of ever being Israel’s king because he was happy to let David take the role, the LORD had anointed him to take. Verses 30-34 describe it.
Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” 32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death. 34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

Saul knew in his heart that the LORD had chosen David to be his successor but he was resolute in making sure it was his family line that continued on Israel’s throne. Once Jonathan understood it, he was all the more devoted to David and went to tell David that he was right and Saul wanted him dead. He had seen Saul’s true nature when his father said such horrible things to him. He had seen David’s true nature throughout. David had never sinned against Saul. They said goodbye to one another knowing it would be a long time before they might see one another again, if ever. Verses 41-42 read,
And as soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, David weeping the most. 42 Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.

Jonathan and David’s bond, their friendship was based on God. He was between them and would forever be what united them. Though at times they doubted one another, they always came back to faith in each other because it was God between them and He is Steadfast, Faithful, and True.
When your relationships include God, you can trust the relationship and you will know that it is an eternal one. The relationships you have with fellow believers, ones where you intentionally include your Lord are powerful. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 in The Message reads,
It’s better to have a partner than go it alone.
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls down, the other helps,
But if there’s no one to help, tough!

11 Two in a bed warm each other.
Alone, you shiver all night.

12 By yourself you’re unprotected.
With a friend you can face the worst.
Can you round up a third?
A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.

Real friendships strengthen you, support you and keep you protected from enemy attacks. Deliberately inviting Jesus into the relationships makes them even more wonderful.  Jesus told us,
Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:18-20).

When we walk this walk together with Jesus, the Holy Spirit works even more within us. He is able to work through each of us to edify all of us. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us,
Iron sharpens iron,
    and one man sharpens another.

And 1 Thessalonians 5:8-24 says this,
But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
Believer, Jesus calls you His friend but you were not meant to be friends with Him alone. You have brothers and sisters in Christ to commune with as well. There is a world of lost people who need to interact with you, to have a relationship with you so they will know Jesus. In John 15:12-17 Jesus gave us this encouragement and commandment,
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
What does it mean that Jesus is our friend? We’re in on God’s will. He tells us what his plan is. But there is more! Job 16:18-22 in The Message describes Jesus this way,
“O Earth, don’t cover up the wrong done to me!
    Don’t muffle my cry!
There must be Someone in heaven who knows the truth about me,
in highest heaven, some Attorney who can clear my name--
My Champion, my Friend,
while I’m weeping my eyes out before God.
I appeal to the One who represents mortals before God
as a neighbor stands up for a neighbor.

“Only a few years are left
before I set out on the road of no return.”

David was a man after God’s own heart and he had a profound friendship with Jonathan. If we are to be men and women after God’s own heart, then we too must have those relationships. We can’t do all God’s will if we are walking a solitary walk.

Life of David Part 4: God’s Purpose Will Be Accomplished.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21 on Photo of Canoe on Suwanee River by Donna Campbell
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Proverbs 19:21
We’ve been reading about David and gleaning lessons from his life. His life is the stuff of epic adventures. Yesterday, we left off with David escaping Saul’s homicidal attack to his home. Today, we’ll continue with 1 Samuel 19:11-24 Verses 11-17 read,
Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped.13 Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats' hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. 14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” 15 Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 16 And when the messengers came in, behold, the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head. 17 Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. Why should I kill you?’”
Michal had to convince David to leave and he only did so in order that she would not be killed in the melee. Saul was not afraid to refer to David as his enemy to his daughter. He had grown to hate David with an intense fear and was determined to kill him no matter the cost.
When David left he headed for Samuel, the Prophet of God because he was the one person he knew who could protect him from Saul, who knew everything about the king, and who worshipped the One True God wholly. In Samuel and Saul’s hometown of Naioth in Ramah, where Samuel had a school of prophesy similar to Elisha’s to train prophets in the Lord David was able to rest for a time. But it didn’t take Saul long to hear he was there. Verses 20-21 read,
Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.

It doesn’t say here what everyone was prophesying about, but I have a feeling they were prophesying about David being the chosen king, the Davidic line, and the Messiah who would save the world. Saul must have been frustrated and furious to hear it. Verses 22-24 read,
Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

God’s power completely overcame Saul against his will to the point that all day and all night he lay naked and prophesying. God spoke to Saul and probably told him how futile his wrath against David was. He might have warned him about the outcome of his plot to kill his anointed. Samuel didn’t take heed. David escaped and Saul went home without having accomplished his objective. Just as God used Saul unwillingly to glorify Him, He used Pharaoh of Moses’ day. In Exodus 9:16 The Lord spoke through Moses to Pharaoh and said,
But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
When you give yourself to God, He will have His way with you. His purposes for you will be achieved. God had great plans for David and He has great plans for you. Believer, you are just as able to do great things as David, in fact more so. You have Jesus Christ; you are indwelled with the Holy Spirit! In John 14:12-17 Jesus said,
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever ,even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

God chose you. He called and you answered. Salvation begins there but it doesn’t end there. It goes on as He transforms you into the image of Christ. If God can take a prideful, mad, and vengeful king and cause him to prophesy for a day and night against his will, don’t you imagine that He can use you when you are willing, humble, and faithful? Philippians 2:12-16 reads,
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

Doing all of God’s will requires you obey Him. To obey, you must know what it is He wants. As you work out your salvation, God works in you and makes you more and more like Jesus, Perfect Love, so that you will please Him by doing His will. Acts 13:22 reminds us that being a person after God’s own heart means we will do all His will. Ask yourself, are you living out your faith and doing all God’s will? I don’t mean earning Salvation, you can’t do that, it is yours freely given. I mean are you tangibly loving as Jesus loves, are you pursuing the Kingdom of God and His righteousness above all else, are you being sanctified, are you fulfilling the Great Commission? That is not done sitting in a pew. It is done by authentically worshipping God with your whole life. It is done by going, making, and teaching in Jesus’ name, and being faithful to God. It is done by knowing God and so knowing Love.
Believer, God has a plan. He has a purpose for you. His plans and purposes will be accomplished. Will you take up your cross daily, be an agreeable participant, and do great things? Or will you like Saul fight him every step of the way and be miserable as you watch God do what He will?

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 On photo of Dragonfly in the Sun
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31
After the defeat of Goliath, Jonathan, Saul’s son saw David in the light of the Spirit and loved him. He knit his soul to David’s and made vows of loyalty to him. 1 Samuel 18:1-4 reads,
As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
What Jonathan did was make David his brother, he gave up his assumed right to be king and gave it to David, and vowed his unending allegiance. Jonathan didn’t have the ambition his father Saul had for him. He recognized David’s anointing. Perhaps, he didn’t understand what he saw in his friend, but he recognized that he was extraordinary. And David was extraordinary, because he had the Spirit of the Lord on him. He went out and did great things and he was successful at whatever he did. He trusted God, obeyed Him, and did all His will. But that day Saul stopped seeing David as he saw him previously. He saw how people loved him and he became jealous. 1 Samuel 18:5-9 describes it.
And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
6 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,
“Saul has struck down his thousands,
    and David his ten thousands.”

8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?”9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.
Saul’s anger opened the door and a harmful spirit came on him. He was raving and he was murderous. David stayed with him day after day playing the lyre to comfort his king. Twice Saul threw his spear at David but David evaded him and remained by his side (1 Samuel 18:10-11). He knew God would take care of him and he knew that God loved Saul and that Saul was still king. Verses 12-16 read,
Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
Saul understood that the Lord was no longer with him and was with David and he was afraid. David gave him no reason to fear him. But Saul couldn’t think straight. He was afraid, because rather than love, he was full of fury, pride, and jealousy He decided to send David off to war to be killed, but because the Lord was with him, David flourished. Saul became only more afraid of him but Israel loved David all the more. Now Saul had to come up another idea to kill David. He offered him his daughter Merab if he would fight valiantly in war. When David defeated Goliath, he had earned Merab as a wife, riches, and freedom for his family (1 Samuel 17:3). He had already fought valiantly. He had earned her hand, but he said no because he was merely a shepherd from Bethlehem (Verse 18). The king had not kept any of his promises about killing Golaith. David didn’t whine about it. He didn’t do it for the rewards, killing Goliath was just something he ought to do. David’s valor, his military might, and his loyalty were part of who he was. He was a man after God’s own heart, a man who did all of the will of God (Acts 13:22). But Saul had given her to Adriel the Meholathite. Even through Saul’s scheming, God had something better in mind for David. 1 Samuel 18:20-23 reads,
Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21 Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.” 22 And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king's son-in-law.’” 23 And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?”
David had a reputation, but he chose humility, a warrior was nothing compared to a king. He should have had the money but Saul had not kept his promises after killing Goliath. David had earned Michal’s hand but never demanded it. And Saul slyly sounded as if the price he wanted would be a simple matter. But in truth he wanted a love struck man to be off his game and die. He put Michal’s dowry at 100 Philistine foreskins. David said, no problem. He went out and brought back 200 foreskins. Now Saul was even more afraid of David and his antagonism and hatred for David grew (1 Samuel 18:24-29).
David’s fame grew, yet he remained humble. He remained loyal to King Saul even though the man wanted him dead. Jonathan also remained loyal to David. Chapter 19:1-7 reads,
And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David.2 And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. 3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” 4 And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. 5 For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?” 6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore,“ As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” 7 And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.

David’s righteous actions, his valor earned him a reprieve from Saul’s rage. Jonathan could say what he did because it was true. But once again David went to war against Philistia and once again he was successful. Once again Saul was jealous, and once again the harmful spirit entered him. What did David do? He went to Saul and played the lyre to comfort him. 1 Samuel 19:8-10 says,
And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. 9 Then a harmful spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre.10 And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.

It had become clear that it was time to escape. David ran to his home and Michal convinced him to hide because she loved him and knew her father was intent on killing him. But David never stopped being brave or faithful. He was affected by the events, he felt the sadness of having people want to destroy him. The Psalms he wrote make that clear. He kept his hope in the Lord even when his enemies surrounded him. He didn’t pretend everything was fine but he didn’t respond in spite or vengeance either. He trusted God. He remained with Saul until he had to leave. And as we read later, he had every opportunity to kill Saul, yet he remembered that Saul was God’s anointed king and refused to raise his hand against him and even sought peace with him (1 Samuel 24).
David was valiant, he knew God was with Him. David was loyal, because he understood that God is sovereign. David was humble, because he only wanted to glorify God and knew that everything he did was because God was with Him. Believer, God is with you too. He is not only with you, surrounding you, leading you, and backing you up, He is within you. You have nothing to fear, no reason to seek revenge, and no reason to let pride puff you up to sin. David trusted in the LORD. He knew who God is and He pursued God’s heart in his own life. Let us be known as men and women after God’s own heart too. Let’s live lives that please our Lord because we trust Him to be God.

Genesis 2:4-25 God Created Man as a Distinctive Masterpiece

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
Genesis 2:4-25
God created man quite uniquely from the way He created every other living thing on the earth. God said, “Let there be…” and the vegetation sprung forth, and the sea creatures and the birds came to be, and the animals of the earth were brought out of the earth. But for man it was different. For man He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” And then He created us in His own image. (Genesis 1:26-27). But man’s creation was even more special, we were made by God’s word yes, but we were also made by His hand and given life by His breath, His Spirit. Verses 4-7 read,
These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature
God had made the angels by His breath (Psalm33:6) and He gave life to man by that same breath. This breath of life from God Himself gave man the ability to understand, choose, and think. Job 32:8 says it like this,
But it is the spirit in man,
the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.

The breath of God is the Holy Spirit of God. Remember too that life was and is in Jesus, life came through Him (John 1:3-4). And when we were made in God’s image He gave us a soul by His Spirit. I picture The Son of God breathing His Holy Spirit into man that day. The creation of man was very special. God made man and then He made a place just for him, a place he could care for and enjoy. He made Eden. Verses 8-15 in The Message describes it,
Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man he had just made in it. God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil.
10-14 A river flows out of Eden to water the garden and from there divides into four rivers. The first is named Pishon; it flows through Havilah where there is gold. The gold of this land is good. The land is also known for a sweet-scented resin and the onyx stone. The second river is named Gihon; it flows through the land of Cush. The third river is named Hiddekel and flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 God took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order.
Eden was paradise on earth, it was lush and had nearly everything the man would need and want. It also had two special trees. It had the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. And God gave the man a rule, one simple rule. Verses 16-17 read,
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Why would God do that? Why would He place this tree in the Garden if man couldn’t eat from it? God had given man a soul with the ability to choose, He had given him freewill. What good is freedom if it can’t be exercised? If man could choose to obey or disobey but there was nothing to obey, then would freewill have been much of a gift? The man could choose God, who is all good and His understanding or He could elect to disobey and take the knowledge of good and evil.
Man had nearly everything he could need, but not quite everything. God was about to fix that, but He wanted the man to understand it too. Verses 18-20 read,
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature,  that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

God had already made the animals and He brought each one to Adam to name. In naming them Adam would look to see which of them would be the right companion for Him. God knew none would give Adam everything he required in a mate, but Adam needed to see it too. None of the animals could talk and think the way Adam could, none had been formed by God’s hands in His image.  None could complement who Adam was in the perfect way. So God completed the male by making the female. Verses 21-25 read,
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
God could have formed another man for Adam the same way He had formed Adam. But another man would not have been the perfect complement to Adam, he would have been the same as Adam. Just as Adam’s creation had been distinct, so too was Eve’s. He made her out of man. She was made of the same stuff but formed to be a counterpart, an accompaniment to balance and fulfil Adam. God gave His second command that future generations would leave their parents and hold fast, that is to cling firmly to grasp to their wives so tightly that they would become one united being. Adam and Eve were perfect, innocent, and complete. They were the crown of creation, the reason God made the heavens and the earth and He proclaimed it very good (Genesis 1:31).
God Himself knit you together. You are wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:13-14). You are distinctive from all of Creation as a masterpiece of God. You are not here by accident or happenstance, no matter the circumstances of your conception or birth. God chose to give you life. Praise Him. I for one am really thankful He made you. I’m glad that you are who you are and I thank the Lord right now for you. As you read to or listen to my words we are connected. We are each meeting a need in one another even if for a brief moment and that is a miracle. So thank God for you and the life the Lord gave you.

Genesis 2:1-3 God Gave us the Sabbath as a Gift

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
Genesis 2:1-3
The concept of rest has been so corrupted by the world, especially in nations like the USA that it has become almost alien to us. We look at rest as something only the weak or lazy do, when in fact rest is a gift from God which keeps us strong and reveals our faith. God created rest. Verses 1-2 read,
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

The Lord had done His work. The heavens, the earth, the angels, the plants, the animals, humanity, all of it was done. So He rested. He rested for a whole day. Why did God rest on the seventh day? He wasn’t tired. He didn’t need to sleep. Isaiah 40:28-29 says,

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.

So if God doesn’t grow tired then why did He rest? He rested on the seventh day as a gift and an example for us. Then He gave us the gift of the seventh day. Verse 3 reads,
So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
The Lord set aside the seventh day as holy, not for Him but for us. Remember He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. God’s understanding is unsearchable. That doesn’t mean we cannot know His reasons, it means that His knowledge, wisdom, and compassion are endless and we as finite beings can’t grasp the limitlessness of it. One part of God’s infinite understanding is that He knows what we need and will need. He knows that as humans we need rest. He understands the science because He created us, He created the science of how we work and how the world works. Isaiah 40:30 reads,
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;

He knew we would get tired and we would need rest. God’s example of rest doesn’t mean we rest all of the time or most of the time. He worked for six days. He rested when the work of creation was finished.  We follow His whole example and not just the parts we like. We work hard and then we rest. Ephesians 4:28 reads
Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
And Proverbs 6:6-9 says,
Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
7 Without having any chief,
    officer, or ruler,
8 she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.
9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?

We are supposed to work, work well, and with a good attitude. Colossians 3:23 encourages us this way,
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
Jesus gave us the example of hard work just as much as He gave us an example of the real meaning of the Sabbath (John 5:17). Pharisees and other legalists have turned what should be a celebration of rest in the Lord into an unenjoyable list of rules as crazy as don’t light a candle or make any food. But Jesus lived without sin and taught that the Sabbath is not about extra-scriptural rules like requirements to wear “church” clothes or not press elevator buttons. The Sabbath is about real rest and celebrating God’s love. It is a gift for us, not another set of shackles. In Mark 2:27-28 Jesus said,
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.  So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

What are the benefits of rest? Why does God encourage us to rest? Life is hard. Our work is hard, the events of life can be draining both emotionally and physically. After John the Baptist’s execution and after the disciples had been teaching and preaching the Gospel Jesus told them they needed to rest. Mark 6:30-32 reads,
The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.
Rest gives us to time with Him and allows Him to invigorate us for the long haul. Hard work saps our strength and rest renews it.
Isaiah 40:31 reads,
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Rest, when we do so in and with God allows us to understand who God is. Psalm 46:8-11 reads,
Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Rest shows others that we trust God. When Jesus slept in the boat during the storm, it gave Him a chance to teach the disciples that God is sovereign over everything including things that are out of their control like the weather. It gave Jesus a chance to show them He is God (Mark 4:35-41). Likewise it allows us to show the world Jesus is the Son of God, our Savior and He is able.
And Believer, know this that we have entered His Sabbath Rest now, although our physical earthly work continues now, the work of God was finished on the Cross. We are in God’s rest now since we do not have to work for our salvation and we will fully experience it in eternity when all our labors are done. Hebrews 4:9-11 reads,
So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

God established the Sabbath as a gift to us, to meet our needs and renew us physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and to demonstrate His power and love to the world. Exodus 34:21 says Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. So Brothers and Sisters, I encourage you to step out of what the world considers right and instead honor God by working and resting for Him, for us, and for the world.

Genesis 1 Why Did God Create the World?

Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11
Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11
Genesis 1
God has never changed. He has been the same God from the start. And in getting to know who God is, what better place is there to begin than the beginning? Let’s dive in to this first book of the Bible and see what we can learn about who God is. Chapter 1, verses 1-2 read,
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
There was nothing but God before He created the heavens and the earth. It doesn’t say why He created the heavens and the earth just that He did. God was and is perfect and complete. He didn’t need anything. He is All-sufficient. Acts 17:24-27 says it this way,
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us
So why did He create the earth? He created it to give us life! Many people say God was lonely. He was not lonely. God wasn’t in need of companionship. He is one God in three personalities, complete, a community unto Himself. His Spirit was hovering over the face of the deep and Jesus was there too. John 1:1-5 tells us,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Son of God is not overtly mentioned in Genesis. It was part of God’s plan to keep the mystery of Salvation until the right time. But The Son of God is mentioned; He is the Word of God and the Light. God spoke and His will manifested. Jesus is the Word of God, God’s manifested will.  Although the earth had been created it was empty, void, and without form. God had created the heavens and the earth but he was not finished. Verses 3-5 read,
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
When God created the light (not Jesus but the difference of night and day), He called it good. He had made the first day. Yet He knew He wasn’t finished, the earth still had no form and it was still empty. Verses 6-8 read,
And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
On the second day He gave the earth some form by separating the heavens and the earth with the sky, and by putting the earth into the atmosphere. He was making a place for us, a place we would be able to thrive, live, and breathe. But it wasn’t time for us yet; He was preparing a place for us. Verses 9-10 read,
And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
As God spoke each part of creation into existence through His Word, He pronounced it good. Now the earth was taking form, there was land and oceans and it was good. But it wasn’t ready for us just yet. Verses 11-13 read,
And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

Now there were plants and trees, flora and fauna. If it were me, I would be so eager to finish I would have made humanity right then and said, “Look what I made for you! Isn’t it good? There’s more to come.” But unlike me, God is patient. He wanted everything to be in place for us. Vegetation and food was good but it wasn’t everything He had planned for us, so He kept working. Verses 14-19 read,
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

God not only created the stars, the sun, and the moon but He made them to be time keepers for us. I never could have thought of that. But He understood our every need, because He had already planned our creation. He made the world an interesting and beautiful place. Time would pass. Seasons and weather would change. And by the sun, moon, and stars men and women would know a day, a month, a season, and a year. We would know how to work the land, when to plant and when to sow. He did this for us before we were made, before the first sin which made working the land necessary. He made this earth for us perfectly, meeting all our needs before they existed. But it wasn’t finished yet. Verses 20-23 read,
And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
God made every kind of bird, every kind of fish, and every kind of sea creature. There was life in the skies, and life in the oceans. But it wasn’t time for us just yet. Verses 24-25 read,
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
God made the animals, every kind there was, mammals, reptiles, insects, and spiders. He declared it good. Now the earth was ready for its purpose, it was ready for mankind. And though God has spoken everything else into existence and each thing was made after its own kind in its own uniqueness, Man was special. We were formed by God’s hands and given life and a soul by His own breath (Genesis 2:7). We were created in God’s image. Verses 26-31 read,
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Consider that for a moment, you were made in the image of God. He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” Everything else God created was proclaimed good, but mankind and the position He gave us was proclaimed very good. Why? Because we were made in His image. To go into the all that means would take an entire series of studies.
But as you come to know God more and you understand His love, beauty, grace, and power, understand that He made you in His image with the potential of all that He is and all the gifts and blessings of His nature. We are completed or perfected when we accept the call of the Father and receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and are imbued with His Holy Spirit who makes us into the image of Jesus Christ. Why did God create the world? He created it for us because He is love and love is only love when it is expressed. 1 John 4:7-16 in The Message reads,
7-10 My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God. The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love—so you can’t know him if you don’t love. This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God.
11-12 My dear, dear friends, if God loved us like this, we certainly ought to love each other. No one has seen God, ever. But if we love one another, God dwells deeply within us, and his love becomes complete in us—perfect love!
13-16 This is how we know we’re living steadily and deeply in him, and he in us: He’s given us life from his life, from his very own Spirit. Also, we’ve seen for ourselves and continue to state openly that the Father sent his Son as Savior of the world. Everyone who confesses that Jesus is God’s Son participates continuously in an intimate relationship with God. We know it so well, we’ve embraced it heart and soul, this love that comes from God.

This world was made for you. You were made in the image of God! And Believer, you are being made the apex of who you can be, the image of Christ. You are being perfected into who you were created to be. So love one another as God loves you. Love because you were created to love and by doing so glorify the Lord God, your maker and your Father.

2 Peter 2 False Teachers and Prophets Hiding in Plain Sight

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
2 Peter 2
There are two kinds of unsaved people. The first are those who do not know the truth, who are living oblivious to who God is and what Jesus has done for them. They may have heard Jesus’ name but they don’t know much more about Him. They are lost. My heart goes out to them and my prayers go up for them.
Then there are those who know who God is, who know what Jesus did and yet reject Him or worse yet use His name to gain profit and a name for themselves. They lead people away from the Truth, the Way, and the Life of Jesus. These are the people we are warned about so often throughout the Bible, the false teachers and false prophets who speak their own message rather than God’s. They are the vipers and hypocrites who speak one way and live another. We have to be wary of them and we have to protect our brothers and sisters from them. Today’s devotional helps us to recognize those who may be masquerading as fellow believers among us.
I warn you, not to read these scriptures with an attitude of smugness at how you are not like the people described in these verses. Read them with reflection, humility, and love. Read them and be accountable to the warnings. Verses 1-3 read,
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.
Peter calls what the false prophets and teachers speak destructive heresies. A heresy is a false doctrine, something which opposes the Gospel. They bring these teachings in on the sly. They are often made to sound pretty and can be convincing. They take scripture out of context to make the less certain among us think what they say is true. What are some heresies abounding today? False teachings about earning salvation, doctrines that say Jesus is not God but only a prophet, and philosophies which say that Christians do not change and we can live in sin just as we did before we were saved. If someone is teaching anything other than Jesus Christ lived, died, and resurrected as the only way to salvation, they are one of the false teachers or false prophets Peter is warning us about.
Verse 3 reads,
And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
What does that mean? It means that though they claim to be saved, they are not. The wrath of God awaits the false teachers and it awaits the people who follow them. Believers died to sin and its consequences but false teachers and their disciples are not believers, they are following lies and the father of lies, Satan. The false teachers definitely think highly of themselves. They’ve elevated themselves before people instead of proclaiming Christ. They’ve taken all the acclaim for themselves and left The Lord out of the equation. They really think they’re good. They think that God’s wrath is not for them, that Judgement Day is just a scary story, or that they are good enough to enter Heaven. But Judgement is the same for everyone whether they believe it will happen or not. It is based solely on whether or not our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The only way to have our names written there is to submit to Jesus as our Lord and be sealed with His Holy Spirit. There is no one who will be able to enter Heaven based on his earthly acclaim. There are no special dispensations. Verses 4-9 in The Message read,
God didn’t let the rebel angels off the hook, but jailed them in hell till Judgment Day. Neither did he let the ancient ungodly world off. He wiped it out with a flood, rescuing only eight people—Noah, the sole voice of righteousness, was one of them.
6-8 God decreed destruction for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. A mound of ashes was all that was left—grim warning to anyone bent on an ungodly life. But that good man Lot, driven nearly out of his mind by the sexual filth and perversity, was rescued. Surrounded by moral rot day after day after day, that righteous man was in constant torment.
9 So God knows how to rescue the godly from evil trials. And he knows how to hold the feet of the wicked to the fire until Judgment Day.
The Holy Spirit guards us for eternity and He will not let the wicked escape His wrath. Who are these people? How can we recognize the false prophets among us when they are so good at hiding the lies in pretty words and convincing arguments? Their lives do not produce the fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
They do not act out of love, they act out of selfishness and pride. Verses 10-11 begin their description.
and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.
They indulge in defiling passion, which means that they give in to basal desires and dishonor the name of Jesus. They despise authority. They must be the ones in charge, they’re probably the ones who complain about their boss or any authority, who rebel against those in power, and refuse to submit to people. That can often look like a good trait to the world but it is not a godly trait. It makes them appear powerful but there is no faith in God when there is fear of letting go of one’s will. They don’t even have the respect not to blaspheme that is to curse or slander angels, people or God Himself. Even angels who might have reason to judge wouldn’t dare to that. Verses 12-13 continue the description.
But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, 13 suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you
False teachers run on instinct and appetite not wisdom and logic. Their lust for themselves will be their destruction and they will have earned it. But they don’t care. They party, they celebrate even when it is time for working, mourning, or caring. They enjoy that people follow them. They give the church a bad name. They take the Love Feast, the Lord’s Supper to look good not with the thankful attitude of recollection of Jesus’ sacrifice. Everything they do is to make themselves look good. Verses 14-16 continue,
They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16 but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.
They were taught the right way, but they abandoned the truth and followed personal gain. It’s all about them and there is nothing there to help anyone else. It looks as if they are doing some good but the only benefit is for themselves Verses 17-19 read,
These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved
They’re telling people they will lead them to freedom but they are in heavy chains. They’re in bondage to their lust for power, money, and recognition. They once heard the truth and even believed it and they were free from the chains of slavery but turned away from the truth. They didn’t follow through on the Gospel and accept Christ as their savior. They rejected Him for an easier road. Verses 20-22 in The Message read,
If they’ve escaped from the slum of sin by experiencing our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ, and then slid back into that same old life again, they’re worse than if they had never left. Better not to have started out on the straight road to God than to start out and then turn back, repudiating the experience and the holy command. They prove the point of the proverbs, “A dog goes back to its own vomit” and “A scrubbed-up pig heads for the mud.”

Please take the time to ask yourself if you or anyone on your church fits this description, not so you can condemn and slander but so that you can pray and act. If it’s you who has not really submitted to God and let His Spirit transform you, do it now. It is someone else then pray first, then talk to him. If he is unwilling to listen, then bring up your evidence to the leaders of your church and give it God. Do not let yourself or others teach lies. We live for God’s glory or our own.

No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15
2 Peter 1
I am overwhelmed by this relationship with God, His love astounds me. The longer I walk with Him the more intimacy He gives me. I have come to see there is no end to the depth of closeness, understanding and friendship with The Lord. One day believers will be completely and perfectly united with Him in New Jerusalem, but now we enjoy and ever growing relationship. As we grow closer to Him, we become more and more like Him.
Do you know how much God loves you? If you say yes, you may understand that He loves you deeply, but I don’t know that any of us can truly fathom the profundity of His love while we are still on this earth. I know that day by day I am amazed at just how intensely and greatly He cares. Peter was writing to dispersed Christians and he wanted them to understand that being so close to God meant something special. Verses 1-2 are the greeting to the letter.
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

He told them that even though he was an apostle and a leader of the church, their faith gave them equal standing in the Lord. They were all declared righteous through Jesus Christ. He prayed that grace and peace would be multiplied to them as they came to know God more and more. And that is what happens, the more we come to know who God is, the more we come to realize His great grace. The more we know God, the easier it is to trust Him and have peace so great, the world can’t grasp it.
This relationship means amazing things for us. Verses 3-4 read,
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

God’s power has given us every gift, blessing, and understanding that has to do with living in the Spirit, a God-pleasing life that points to Jesus. God’s promises are not like ours. He didn’t promise us the ridiculousness of rainbows and unicorns that and He didn’t promise us mere ice cream with sprinkles. No, He promised eternal life. He promised salvation. He promised Himself to us. He said, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6). It is through those wonderful promises that we are able to experience a closeness with God that can only be described as a union of our soul to His; He gave us His Spirit. He lets us partake, that is share, experience, and join in His nature, His character! Jesus last words before His ascension and after He promised the Holy Spirit and gave the great commission to the Apostles were, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).
Sharing in God’s nature, having His Spirit indwelled in us means we can live out the great commission to Go out and train everyone far and near in this way of life, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and instruct them in the practice of all Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:18-20). Living out our faith means living and behaving as Jesus would, showing His goodness and salvation to the world. It means we are not the same people we used to be and we ought to live as new creations and not like our old selves. Who would want to come to know a god who doesn’t put his power behind His words? God’s power is His Word, it is real, and we are able to live that power through our lives since God has granted us all things pertaining to life and godliness. Verses 5-11 in The Message read,
So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books.
10-11 So, friends, confirm God’s invitation to you, his choice of you. Don’t put it off; do it now. Do this, and you’ll have your life on a firm footing, the streets paved and the way wide open into the eternal kingdom of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Christian striving to walk in the Spirit knows it is no easy thing to always choose virtue, patience, kindness, self-control, and love. But she knows that faith in God makes it possible because she joins in His Spirit and not her flesh. The longer she walks in the Spirit, the easier each attribute comes, but it is a constant and continuous endeavor that will be completed only on the day we are taken up to be with Jesus as His Bride.
If we give up, if we decide that we are going to wait for some instant magical change we won’t be exercising faith in God by choosing His way over ours. The people who do not know Jesus will not see Him in us and we will be ineffectual for the Kingdom of Heaven. Giving in to the sins of our past and the desires of the flesh quenches the Spirit. He goes from being a hot and purifying fire within us who speaks to the world by the changes He makes in us to an ember who won’t make changes in us we are not willing to allow. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-24 says it like this,
See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

But when we choose to let The Spirit purify our old nature, when we choose to partake of God’s nature rather than our old nature, God burns passionately in us. We know Him on an ever deepening level and we know His heart. It is truly miraculous. Such a close relationship with God, one where He shares His secrets, His desire, and His power with us is not exclusive to a few Christians. It is not just for the top echelon. Peter said through faith we have obtained equal standing before God. That intimacy is for all of us who want it. And Peter was in the very top tier of people who could have claimed a higher rank. He was an apostle and He was among the three who Jesus took into His inner circle. Peter, John Paul and James, the brother of Christ were the undisputed leaders of the early church. Peter had seen things with Jesus that only someone in an intimate relationship could be shown. When he preached the gospel to people, he didn’t have to say something he had learned second or third hand. He spoke from his experience. When he declared Christ as the Son of God, he said it because he had been there when God declared it. Verses 16-18 read,
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

Peter didn’t have to memorize a special program for evangelism. He spoke from experience, he spoke from his friendship with Jesus. Guess what! We too know God, we too are His friends and we can speak from our experience and knowledge of God. We have God living inside us, His Spirit is sewn to ours. When we share the Gospel, it is first hand because we are sharing how Jesus saved us and how He has made us new. We are able to speak His words because He is friends enough to tell us His plans. In John 15:14-15 Jesus said,
“You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

Speaking God’s heart, speaking God’s Word is called prophecy. It is a privilege to hear God’s Word and a greater privilege to speak it. It is one we as believers all have. Verses 19-21 describes it.
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Our closeness with the Lord has several outcomes. We grow closer and closer to Him as Jesus, the Bright and morning Star rises in our hearts. We become more like Him as we choose to let Him conform us to His image. We live out our faith because we share in His nature. We speak His Word by His will, power and understanding and so point the world to Jesus.

1 Peter 5 The Distinction of Humility

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. James 4:10
1 Peter 5
We’ve been learning about the distinction we have in following Christ and what an honor it is to suffer for Him. Brothers and Sisters, we do not suffer alone. We have one another. God established the church, the body of Christ in a model of His relationship with us. He works and speaks through us, His chosen and holy people to encourage, exhort, and edify one another. We do so in a model of Jesus relationship with us as we strive to always move forward in our transformation toward His image. One of the most important aspects of Jesus’ character and the most difficult to live is humility. But love is communicated most perfectly in humility. Verses 1-4 read,
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

The Lord put our pastors, deacons, and elders in place. He honored them by making them servants to His people as Jesus lived as a servant to us. Their job is difficult, their responsibility is immense. They will be judged with greater strictness than the majority (James 3:1). The longer we are walking in Christ, the more we ought to look act like Him. As we mature, we should be becoming teachers, mentors, and servants in the Kingdom (Hebrews 5:12). People in the position of elder must walk in humility and act in love. They are a living example of Jesus Christ to us. So we need to make sure we are showing them the respect they deserve. We need to model the humility of Christ by submitting to our pastors and other elders, by giving them the reverence they deserve as God’s anointed servants. Verse 5 reads,
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Pride is a sneaky thing and it is in opposition to God. Atheism is not the opposite of Christianity; I-theism is. It is the exaltation of the self, the serving of one’s self, the living to please one’s self that opposes the Lord and serves Satan. But pride sneaks in. When we judge the elder or one another for imperfections, pride is showing its ugly head. When we look at the good works we’ve done for Christ and give ourselves a pat on the back, we open the door to pride. When we plan a mission to bring the lost to the Lord yet control every aspect because only we can do it right, pride walks in that door. When we accept the glory that belongs to God for the works being done, pride takes over, quenches the Holy Spirit and makes us ineffectual at best and makes people follow us straight to Hell at worst. Pride is at the core of sin. Lucifer fell because of His pride (Ezekiel 28:17). Adam and Eve sinned because of pride (Genesis 3:6). Judas betrayed Christ because of pride (Luke 22:3). Peter denied Christ because of pride (Luke 22:54-62). Peter was reconciled with Christ because Jesus loved him enough to forgive him and offer him the honor of caring for His church (John 21:15-19). Jesus exemplified humility for Peter and Peter was able to follow that example and submit to Jesus. Verses 6-7 read,
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
It is prideful to worry, to be anxious, and think that we have to take care of our problems on our own. All we have to do is humble ourselves before God and trust Him. He promised if we concerned ourselves with His kingdom, He would take care of all the details. In Matthew 6:33-34 Jesus said,
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
Satan works through pride. He makes the lost think they do not need God and he makes Christians think they should depend on themselves rather than God for their transformations, good works, and provision. So be careful of pride. Verses 8-11 read,
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

You know, the devil your enemy is not all that. He’s puffed up with pride. He tries to look beautiful for the world and terrifying to Christians. But he isn’t. He attacks in fear. Do you know that you don’t have to fight with him or engage him at all? All you have to do is resist, to say, “Nope, not gonna give in” and he takes off like a coward.  To fight the enemy is to say you don’t trust that God will fight for you. It says you do not believe Jesus already overcame Satan, sin and death. Submit to God and trust Him to be God. James 4:6-10 reads,
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Pride tells us that we can earn favor from God. Pride makes us trust the Law instead of the Lord. Peter closes this letter in verses 12-14
By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love.
Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Believer, I encourage you today stand firm in the true grace of God, to ask God to reveal hidden pride in you, to look at your relationships and see if you are submitting to one another, and to submit yourself to God. You do not have to be afraid to submit to God, He loves you so very deeply.

1 Peter 4 Suffering with a Purpose, Grace with a Mission

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer Romans 12:12
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer Romans 12:12
1 Peter 4
Yesterday we read about how we are different from the world and that difference is expressed by how we treat people. Today, we see how that difference is exhibited by our behavior. Verses 1-3 read,
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
Jesus suffered so much and it was for our benefit. Our own suffering, which for most of us will never be as bad as Christ’s can also be for our benefit. We can learn from it and we develop the character of Christ because of it. Romans 5:1-5 says it like this,
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

We cannot let Jesus sacrifice on the Cross and His victory over death and sin mean nothing to us by not letting his suffering or own transform us. The past is the past. God no longer sees our sins we He looks at us, He sees us as new righteous creations. There is no sin in Christ. Christ was sinless, He took our sin away, and we no longer have sin in us or on us. 1 John 3:4-6 reads,
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

Although we can and sadly often do act the way we did before we knew Jesus, we do not have to be compelled to sin any longer. Even though we may do things that are considered sins, we are not under the law any longer so theoretically nothing we do is sin. But there are things which produce goodness and things which do not. There are practices, behaviors, and attitudes which exalt God and there are those which exalt ourselves. 1 Corinthians 6:12 says it this way,
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

We are just not the same as we used to be. Exalting ourselves and feeding our basal desires just doesn’t hold the same charm anymore. The world will undoubtedly take note of the difference and they will not like it. The old friends we used to party with, won’t recognize the new person we’ve become and they will want their old friend back. Why? Because our new desire to be good shows them that their actions are not so good. Verses 4-7 read,
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

Judgement Day is coming. They will be judged. But our walk with Jesus in the Spirit can speak volumes to the lost. We can tell them the wonderful news of Jesus Christ and they can be saved!  But if we act the way we acted before we knew Jesus, if we sin the way we used to, they won’t see Jesus as real and they won’t see His power and saving grace.
Living by grace doesn’t mean sinning as if there is no such thing as law, it means exercising the power of God within us and living the holy righteous lives we can because God is able to transform us. Verses 8-11 read,
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Grace is wonderful and miraculous. We are not yet perfect but we have been perfected, even while God is still making us perfect. The law is no longer something we follow to be called good. It is part of us, written onto our hearts, so that we understand the crux of it which is reconciliation with God. We are free to love as God loves. Hebrews 10:14-18 reads,
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
We will make mistakes but if we strive to act out of God’s love, we will not make those mistakes as often. Even when we do, love will cover the mistake with grace. People need God’s grace and we have it! We can show them His marvelous grace through exercising the gifts we’ve been given. We use those gifts for our benefit, the church’s benefit, and the world’s benefit. If we don’t use them, we are not serving Jesus Christ as we could, we are serving ourselves and hiding the Gospel from those who desperately need it.
We will suffer. We do suffer. And there are different kinds of suffering. Sometimes we go through awful things because we acted in certain ways and we have to experience the consequences of those choices. That suffering can discipline us. But sometimes our suffering is undeserved. Sometimes it is because we are standing up for Jesus, walking in the Spirit, and refusing to deny Christ by giving in to sin. That suffering can also teach us but in addition it glorifies God and points the world to Jesus. Verses 12-19 read,
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And
“If the righteous is scarcely saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

Jesus suffered for our sake and the sake of every person on this planet. He was lifted up and hung on a cross as the world tried to humiliate Him. But the curse they tried to inflict on Jesus became a blessing and honor for us. So when people slander you, try and hurt you, or try to shame you undeservedly, remember Jesus will be glorified. Rejoice, you are being honored and your suffering can be a blessing to those living under the curse of death. Rejoice because the trials you are suffering are making you more like Jesus. If your life is changing to look like Jesus, then maybe you ought to question if you are walking in Christ. If your suffering isn’t reshaping your character into Jesus’ character, then perhaps you ought to question if The Holy Spirit is in you. Judgement Day is coming for all of us.
