Genesis 19 God’s Love Would not be Love without His Wrath

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10
Genesis 19:1-29
Today’s devotional may not be a popular one. It discusses the wrath of God. Many people do not like to talk about God’s wrath. I’ve heard people say, “My God would never send someone to Hell.” There are people who can only see Him as the fire and brimstone God and they hate Him for it and they call Him a god of hate. A few people think God chooses some people to hate and that He is wrathful only to them. Some people think that a wrathful or vengeful God doesn’t fit into the image of God as love. And they completely dismiss the idea that a loving God could also be a wrathful God.
Imagine a Righteous Judge. Now imagine the case before Him: Two men came into a city known for its debauchery. On the night these men arrived, the population, especially the male population took notice of them and decided to rape them. Although one man in the city took them into his home and tried to keep them safe, this horde of men followed them to the house. They beat the door and tried to break it down to get at the visitors but couldn’t. When the hero tried to reason with them and begged them to stop, they accused him of judging them and continued trying to get the visitors so they could have their way with them. They were bent on the gang rape and nothing, short of God could stop them. Let’s read the case beginning with verses 1-11.
The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” 3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house.5 And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” 9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. 10 But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door.

Now what should the Righteous Judge do to the mob of men, which was made of up every man in that city except for Lot? Should he show them mercy because they were just following their natural desires? Would it be loving of Him to say, “Good and evil are objective, morality is up to you, so if you think it’s right to rape and murder, then it is right for you?” Where would the love be? What about the victims? Where is their justice? What about the perpetrators? Shouldn’t they pay for their crimes? A loving God loves enough to take vengeance against those who have done wrong. A loving God keeps no secret about who will pay the price for wrongs committed in this world.
Sin is not the individual wrongs every person commits. Sin is the state of the world in which every person falls short of the perfection of God (Romans 3:23). The payment required by God for sin is death (Romans 6:23). Every person has to pay it. But God loves the world so much that He sent His Son, He who is God, perfect and righteous came and paid the debt He did not owe (John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:21). He took the death sentence that each of us owe. He rose from death and conquered sin and death so that we have a choice (1 Corinthians 15:55-57). We can accept the gift of Jesus payment for our sin or we can pay ourselves.
The wrath of God is an expression of God’s love. If no one had to pay for evil of the world, then we would live in a place much like Sodom where a mob of men bent on rape and murder could be considered the standard. Where people felt they had the right to hurt others in the name of personal desires. A place where there was no such thing as right and wrong. So the Lord acted. First He saved Lot and let gave Lot a chance to save others. Verses 12-14 read,
Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” 14 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
Lot tried to rescue his future sons in law, who had been among the mob. They had the chance to be saved, but they chose to mock Lot rather than believe him. How many people do we know like that in our lives. If we love them, we want them to be saved from God’s wrath, even if it means ridicule. They don’t see it as love, they called it judgement, or they call it foolishness. It is love to tell people that Jesus loves them and wants them to be saved from The Day of Wrath and become instead the Bride of Christ. Do you love them enough to put up with their derision so they can join you for the Wedding Feast of the Lamb?
Verses 15-17 continue the tale.
As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.” 16 But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. 17 And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.”
The time of God’s wrath was nearing and Lot was lingering. Maybe he didn’t really believe it would happen so soon. Maybe he loved his home and was sad to leave it all behind. One thing is certain, he didn’t know what his future held and he was afraid. The angels took the family by the hands and took them out of Sodom and told them to run so that the destruction wouldn’t fall on them. Verses 18-26 reads,
And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords. 19 Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. 20 Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!” 21 He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.22 Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then theLord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Lot and his family made it to Zoar in time, but Lot’s wife was not the committed and righteous person her husband was. She looked back on the city. I wonder if she thought to herself, “I’d rather be there under the sulfur and fire partying with them than bored and breathing in Zoar.” Whatever the case, God gave her what she wanted. She incurred the wrath of God which she chose and became a pillar of salt. Verses 27-29 read,
And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
29 So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

The destruction of those cities was seen throughout the surrounding areas near and far. All the people who had cried out to God over the wickedness of those place saw the answer to their prayers. God avenged them.

Do you trust God enough to understand that His love has to include His wrath? Do you have people you need to go to and tell them that The Day of the Lord is near and they can be saved? Don’t they deserve the chance to hear it, even though they may think you’re ridiculous for believing it?

Genesis 14 Faith Enough to Give

And he (Melchizedek) blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:19-20
And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:19-20
Genesis 14
There was a massive war taking place in the area where Lot lived in Sodom. Several kings had come together and attacked the countries of other kings. Verses 1-2 list the warring factions,
In the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,2 these kings made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)
As the war continued on, the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim decided they had been oppressed for too long and joined forces to fight their enemies as one. Verses 3-12 in The Living Bible describes the long war.
These kings (of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela) mobilized their armies in Siddim Valley (that is, the valley of the Dead Sea). 4 For twelve years they had all been subject to King Chedorlaomer, but now in the thirteenth year, they rebelled.
5-6 One year later, Chedorlaomer and his allies arrived and the slaughter began. For they were victorious over the following tribes at the places indicated: the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim; the Zuzim in Ham; the Emim in the plain of Kiriathaim; the Horites in Mount Seir, as far as El-paran at the edge of the desert.
7 Then they swung around to Enmishpat (later called Kadesh) and destroyed the Amalekites, and also the Amorites living in Hazazan-tamar.
8-9 But now the other army, that of the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (Zoar), unsuccessfully attacked Chedorlaomer and his allies as they were in the Dead Sea Valley (four kings against five).10 As it happened, the valley was full of asphalt pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some slipped into the pits, and the remainder fled to the mountains. 11 Then the victors plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and carried off all their wealth and food, and went on their homeward way, 12 taking with them Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and all he owned.
The kings of Sodom, Gomorrah and their allies had at first been victorious but when they fought their main oppressor, Chedorlaomer they found themselves losing in the unfamiliar terrain. Some ran away afraid, some fell into pits, others fled to the mountains. Their enemies paid them back by raiding their cities and taking everything and anything they wanted, including people. One of those people was Lot.
But all hope was not lost, one of Lot’s servants escaped and made his way all the way back to Abram. Verses 13-16 describe what happened,
Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram.14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.
Abram had an army of just over 300 men, I doubt they were much against the armies of Chedorlaomer and his allies but Abram had what they didn’t. He had the Lord guiding him. He divided his men and attacked at night, he not only defeated them but when they ran, he pursued, and he took back everything they stole including Lot. So Abram went to meet the king of Sodom. Verses 17-20 read,
After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley).18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

Melchizedek was the king of Salem. Salem was probably another name for Jerusalem, a city that existed long before Israel. The world Salem means peace and Jerusalem means abode of peace. Abram and Lot were not the only people on the earth who worshipped God.
Melchizedek, the king of Salem was not only a king but also a priest. He was a priest before Aaron existed, before Levi was born, and before Israel was conceived. He was a special kind of man, unique in the world at the time.
Now Abram had spoken to the Lord on more than occasion, God could easily have given him this blessing without a middle man but He chose not to. He chose to use his priest, his servant king. Sometimes speaking through His servants to one another serves a better purpose. This was one of those occasions.
Melchizedek is seen here as a type of Christ, meaning that he prophetically foreshadowed Jesus Christ. Melchizedek is one of many Christ-types seen in the Bible. It is a phrase we use to describe the revelation of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. So the King of Salem met Abram to reveal salvation.
His name proclaims Jesus. Melchizedek is a Canaanite name which means My King is God or when conjugated in Hebrew, My King is Righteousness. His title declares Jesus, king of peace. His position the King and Priest, like Jesus. His actions affirm it, Melchizedek took bread and wine. Every Believer hears bread and wine and one thing comes to mind, The Lord’s Supper, Jesus body broken for us, Jesus blood spilled for us to forgive our sins and reconcile us to the Lord. The Jewish people probably would associate the bread and wine with Passover, a feast all about Jesus’ Salvation.
In David’s Messianic Psalm 110:4 he wrote,
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

So the Lord send his royal priest to reveal Jesus. He sent Him to bless Abram in front of the King of Sodom to show him that he too could serve the Most High God and know victory and peace. God sent his servant king so that Bera king of Sodom could see Abram’s response. The second half of verse 20 reads,
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Abram had not only taken back Lot, but all of his men and possessions and many other men and all their possessions. A tenth of that was not a little something. It was Abram’s to do with what he chose. But he recognized that Melchizedek was a fellow servant of The LORD and he recognized his position as king and priest put him Melchizedek above him. He honored the king and thanked him for the blessing by giving him a small portion of the loot. Abram recognized The Lord in this man and worshipped God by giving a tithe to Melchizedek. The author of Hebrews describes it in Hebrews 7:1-3,
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. 3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
But the king of Sodom didn’t see it as a mere 10%, he didn’t see that Abram still had 90%, he saw it as Abram giving away his stuff, his money, and mostly his power. Bera didn’t see the act of worship, he saw money being exchanged. And though he had no right to any of the money or the men, he pretended that he did. It might once have been his, but it wasn’t now. Verses 21-24 read,
And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”

Melchizedek’s blessing had declared God, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth. The blessing had made it clear it was not men or strength which had rescued Sodom’s people, it was God Most High, who had delivered Abram’s enemies into Abram’s hand. When Bera tried to be sly and pretend he was being generous and letting him have the money, Abram said, ‘God Most High is the Possessor of heaven and earth, He’s got it all, including you, me, and all these men. I don’t want any of this money because you need to know it is not you who made me rich, it is not this fight that made me rich; it is God Most High who takes care of me.’ He wanted nothing for himself, he had already been blessed by the Lord. He made sure that the armies who had fought alongside him were taken care of and let Bera keep everything else.
Sodom had a chance to be saved, but the king chose military strength and money over the Lord. Even though all his army’s power and all his money had not been enough to defeat his enemies and even though he had seen the LORD use a tiny army to defeat his enemies, he still couldn’t trust God. He was too busy trusting possessions.
Giving back to the Lord a part of what He gives us is an act of worship, a show of faith, and a testimony to people who are watching us. We can put our faith in our money. We can put our faith in laws and looking righteous or we can put our faith in God. Some people tithe, not because they trust the Lord and want to worship Him but because that is one of the rules they are taught to follow. If we give out of obligation, is it an act of worship?  When we worship by giving we are giving our money to God, when we give out of duty we are giving money to men. Although the check may be written to the same institution, God understands where your heart is when you give. He knows if you are giving it to please Him or please man. Hebrews 7:8-10 reads,
In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. 9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, 10 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.
God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). So if you’re going to give, and I hope you are faithful enough to obey Him, then give to cheerfully to please God for the sake of Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 2 If You Know the Word Yourself, You Wont Fall for Lies.

2 Peter Chapter 2

It is very important for believers to read the Bible, to pray, and to pursue knowledge of God. Otherwise they will follow whatever sounds nice, even if it is in complete opposition to the Gospel. They can begin to believe the well-woven tales of liars who take parts of the Bible and present them with their strange logic. They appeal to emotions and fleshly desires. They are about feeling good and being positive. Peter exhorts the church to beware of those people. Verses 1-3 read,

“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

The same demons who infested people in Noah’s day and in Sodom and Gomorrah are infesting them now to keep as many as possible from the truth. In Peter’s day, the false prophets and false teachers had to go into each church to spread their heretical doctrine. Today, they only have to appear on television. They still go into the churches, some even start their own churches. They look good. They seem so positive and pleasant with their big smiles and agreeable words. They can make people believe the lies they tell, because they sprinkle in enough scripture to make them think it is biblical. They offer freedom in prosperity, perfect health, and power. And desperate people searching for good news, seeking relief from their problems throw money at them and exalt the false teachers as their saviors.

We must know the Bible ourselves. We must read the word ourselves instead of only listening to what this preacher or that preacher says. A good preacher wants you to read it yourself, he wants us to question him about what he has taught. We are seeking God, not a preacher. In 1 Corinthians 15:34 Paul has some harsh words for people who don’t bother learning for themselves, who believe the false teachers who denied Jesus’ resurrection and brought other lies to them.

“Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.”

We must remain diligent in our pursuit of the Kingdom of God. We have to recognize truth and lies. We have to be assiduous in our godliness. Lot lived in Sodom for years. All around him people gave way to the most base of desires. Yet, he remained righteous. Imagine the derision he faced day after day as everyone in that city called him hater, Pious Pat, and evil. But he remained steadfast and never let their vile life become normal and acceptable to him. Verses 7-10 read,

“and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.”

The Lord brought Lot safely out of Sodom when he destroyed the city for its sin. The Lord has rescued us from the punishment of sin to the awesome hope of eternal life. Let that promise keep us persistent in following God instead of man. Allow the promise of our salvation to keep us diligent and deliberate in partaking of God’s nature instead of the flesh nature.

Peter gives a lengthy description of false teachers in verses 10-22 and I highly recommend you read it for yourself in case you recognize people that fit that description. Verses 14-15 read,

“They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing,”

It is the unsteady soul who falls for the lies. Not only must we be careful about what we listen to and believe but we have to watch out for our brothers and sisters who are weaker, less mature, or going through trials that make them vulnerable to these vultures. Verses 18-19 say,

“For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.”

We’ve all seen brothers and sisters teetering on the edge. We must step in and be Jesus to them to keep them from following lies instead of Jesus. They will either be overcome by Jesus or overcome by false promises of pleasure. We can be the difference.

Once a person hears and understands the truth about Jesus, if she goes back to living as a slave to lies, her punishment is much worse than the one who never heard the Gospel. We can’t let that happen to her. Verses 20-21 say it like this.

“For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them”

Are you following a false teacher or Jesus? Do you know God for yourself or are you taking someone else’s word for who He is and what He has said? Is there a brother or sister who may fall victim to a false prophet? Pursue God. Pursue Truth.

Ezekiel 16 Are You a Princess Bride or a Whore?

Ezekiel Chapter 16

The Lord compares Jerusalem to a woman in this chapter through a captivating narrative. It goes something like this.

She was born and unwanted immediately thrown out to the elements and not a single thing was done for her. Her umbilical cord wasn’t cut, the blood wasn’t washed off her, and she wasn’t wrapped in a blanket. There she lay, helpless and weak until the Lord saw her. He was moved with compassion and said, “Live!” And she did. He made her flourish and she grew up to be beautiful. But she was still naked and poor.

When he passed her by again she was at that tender age able to take a lover. So the Lord protected her and took her in. He covered up her nakedness. He gave her beautiful clothes, fine jewelry and royalty. He fed her the best foods and her beauty and her reputation for beauty grew among the nations. Verse 14 puts it this way,

“And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.”

Everything she had, her beauty, her security, and even her life was due to God’s favor toward her. But instead of putting her trust in Him, she put her trust in her beauty. She became a whore. She went out and brought men to her and had sex with all of them. She took the clothes, silks and fabrics the Lord had given her and made shrines and places to practice whoring. She perfumed the beds with incense and oils. She took the jewelry he had given her and made sick images of men to call them to her. She even gave the good foods the Lord had given her to the men who came to her beds. All the elements of her relationship with God, she gave away in whoring. Worst of all she sacrificed her children, the ones the Lord had fathered to idols.

She never looked back to her infantile weakness, her need of redemption and the gift of life God gave her. She built brothels for herself everywhere and word of her promiscuity was known everywhere. Even the most wicked countries were shocked at how licentious and immoral she was. Nothing satisfied her she became more and more wanton. Her philandering spread everywhere.

But unlike most hookers, she didn’t accept money for her prostitution. She wasn’t forced to sell her body. She chose to do it. She seduced men. She gave them gifts, and paid them instead of the other way around.

That is quite the dramatic tale! Yet, it is how Jerusalem treated the Lord and it is how too many of us treat Him. Jesus gave us life. He covered our shame and took away our sin. He made us His bride. God gave us gift after gift including royalty. But rather than trust Him, we trust the gifts He lavished on us. We trust beauty, or personality, or power. We practice adultery openly. Then we’re shocked when outsiders judge us for hypocrisy, hate us and call us evil. We lead people away from the truth and sacrifice the children that came to follow us to Jesus to lies and whoredom.

Have you done that? Have you trusted in God’s gifts instead of God? Have you depended on His provision rather than Him? Have you put your faith in your abilities instead of The LORD? The “love” we show to idolaters and the lost by accepting their sins is not love. Their sins lead them to death, and by allowing them think God tolerates sin we are not loving them. The adultery we commit with them is hateful and harmful. Verse 37 reads,

“therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.”

God was so angry with Jerusalem for her blatant infidelity and faithlessness that He let her pay for her own sins. His salvation was not hers. She chose her own religion over a relationship with God. So He let her.  He turned her over to her lovers, the many nations whom she could have led to the Lord by glorifying him but instead led to death by glorifying herself.

In Ezekiel 16 Jerusalem was disgusted by Sodom’s sin and Samaria’s iniquities. The Lord called them her sisters and said she was much worse than they ever had been. Sodom was so evil, God obliterated the city from the planet. He called Jerusalem more abominable. We do that today. We think we’re so much better than others. We’re not like the Mormons. They have it all twisted and wrong. We are not like those disgusting homosexuals! We are better.

God says, “No, you are just like them, only worse.” He gave us every opportunity. He heaped His gifts on us. He led us to the truth, but we rejected Him. And we were proud of our rejection as we proclaimed some murky version of “truth” instead of the name of Jesus.

How often do we look at the “sinners” that surround us and think we are better than they are? We’re good. We’re “Christians” We’re not foolish unbelievers who practice every sin in the book. But we are not better. We are far worse because we know better! And too often we join them in their sin, we put a false stamp of approval over it. To know that Jesus gives perfect salvation, to understand that God love us deeply and asks us to love Him first and foremost with our heart, mind soul, and strength, and that Holy Spirit will dwell within us and yet still turn to false gods, philosophies, and sin is far more base than the sins we judge so freely.

God loves you. He wants you to believe, repent, and obey. He wants to let you experience the entirety of His love. God loves the homosexual, the Mormon, and the murderer too. He wants them to know Him. They can’t know Him if you offer some false message to them. They can’t know Him if you emulate a false god rather than the One True Living God.

God gave you life for a purpose. He rescued you for a reason. He brought you to where you are with intention. God is faithful, even when we are not. He wants you, His royal bride to bring others into the Kingdom. Verses 59-63 read,

“For thus says the Lord God: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant, 60 yet I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you take your sisters, both your elder and your younger, and I give them to you as daughters, but not on account of the covenant with you. 62 I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be confounded, and never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

Examine your life, your heart, and your relationship with God and with the world. Have you made Jesus Christ your Lord and King? Have you been completely faithful to Him? Have you flirted with the world instead of loving them? Are you a devoted bride to the King of kings? Do you trust God to be your God or do you trust the gifts He gave you?

    Donna Campbell

As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
