Search my Heart, Make me like You, Lord

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! Psalm 139:23
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! Psalm 139:23
Today, I am taking a brief break from reading Deuteronomy to do a rabbit trail study. I realized recently that there was something wrong. I had let my depression take over my mind, heart, and time. So I prayed. Psalm 139:23-24 reads,
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting!

Asking The Lord to search our hearts is an important and beneficial discipline that can keep us progressing in our walk with Him. It can help us see areas where we fall short of His example. I listened to My Merciful Lord’s answer, which came quickly and gently. Two passages of scripture come to mind when I think about who Jesus is and who we should be as we mature into His image. One is the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23; the other is the description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful] 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

Asking myself how I compare with these two depictions of Christ reveals to me where my problems lay. So this time, when I asked, God showed me I had lost the joy I should be demonstrating as a fruit of the Spirit. So I asked Him to reveal the source. He said, “You’ve been resentful, because you have envied others. You’ve been exhausted because you have been suffering and instead of turning to me, you relied on yourself, my Darling you do not have the stores to do this alone. Give it to me.”
I did something I do not often do and that is, open the Bible to a random page and read. But there are times when God will speak that way. I opened the Bible to Joel chapter 2 and I read. Joel 2:12-13 reads,
Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
    “return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13     and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
    for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
    and he relents over disaster.

I had been sinning, wearing my suffering for everyone to see, tearing my garments, heaping ashes on my head and crying for others to see. I had to break my heart so He could give me a new one. I had to put on the garment God gave me. Jesus said,
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:16-18).
I had exalted my suffering, wore it so that everyone could see it, and reveled in it. There is a difference between telling people I am suffering and need prayer and walking around looking, feeling, and exuding gloom. I should have trusted them to be compassionate since they too have the Spirit in them. We all suffer. I do not know anyone who isn’t suffering. Mine is no more special or important than yours. How can I share the love Paul described if I am glorifying myself through exalting my suffering? How can I demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit if I am busy demonstrated my pitiable self?
Jesus gave me a garment. Isaiah 61:1-3 reads,
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

With my torn heart, I can wear a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, I can apply the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and wear the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. When people see me they should see an oak of righteousness and glorify the Lord. Am I praising God or am I walking around faint in spirit?  I have so much to be beautiful and glad about. Jesus overcame death and sin, He rose from the dead and made me alive in Him. One day we will be resurrected, receive new bodies, and spend eternity face to face with God! This life is temporary. We only have a short time to do the good work we were made for and reveal Jesus Christ to the world so they too can have the hope we have. Romans 6:5-11 reads,
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Jesus gave me a new mind and a new heart. I am a new person. But I have to purposefully put on the new self. He gives me these things, but I must put them on. Ephesians 4:20-24 reads,
But that is not the way you learned Christ! — 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Believer, if we want to look like Jesus, who we were created to look like, we have to be diligent about walking with Him. Take off your old filthy garments and put on the new garment washed clean in Jesus’ blood. You are not the sins of your past. You are not your illness, addiction, or bank account. You are not the circumstances of your life. You are a new creation, with a new name. You are a child of the Living God. The devil wants to destroy you. He accuses you of being your old self; he accuses you of being unworthy of God’s grace. Whether you are worthy of grace or not (and who is), you have been granted that grace. God chooses to see you through the blood of Jesus, He chooses to see you as His holy child. You are not what the father of lies claims, you are who the Lord God says you are.
Ask God to search your heart. Listen to what He tells you and put off the old self, be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God.

Psalm 66 Why Do We Praise The Lord?

Psalm 66

There is always a reason to praise God. We praise Him for what He has done. We extol Him for Who He is. We magnify Him for what He is doing and for what He has told us He will do. God is great, He is awesome, mighty, tremendous, faithful, splendid, merciful, and loving. Verses 1-4 incite the entire earth to praise Almighty God.

“Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
2     sing the glory of his name;
    give to him glorious praise!
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
    So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
4 All the earth worships you
    and sings praises to you;
    they sing praises to your name.”  Selah”

Praise to The Lord is glorious. God becomes known to the world, He is made famous to all those who hear the praise of the saints. His name is exalted, His works are celebrated, and He is lauded by our praise and worship. There will be a day when every person will come before The Lord for judgement.  On that day the every person will bow to Jesus, and that includes His enemies. The people whose hearts are hard and filled with rage at the idea of The King of kings, who are to prideful to acknowledge Him will bend their knees to Him and proclaim that Jesus is the Lord of lords, King of kings, and God of the Universe. (Isaiah 45:22-25, Philippians 2:1-11). They will wince and shudder, because they will see the Truth, and it will be too late, too late to choose Him and too late to know Him.

What has God done? How has The Almighty God shown His love to His children? Verses 5-12 read,

“Come and see what God has done:
    he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.
6 He turned the sea into dry land;
    they passed through the river on foot.
There did we rejoice in him,
7     who rules by his might forever,
whose eyes keep watch on the nations--
    let not the rebellious exalt themselves.  Selah

8 Bless our God, O peoples;
    let the sound of his praise be heard,
9 who has kept our soul among the living
    and has not let our feet slip.
10 For you, O God, have tested us;
    you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net;
    you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
12 you let men ride over our heads;
    we went through fire and through water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.”

God brought Israel into Egypt where their numbers grew from 70 people to a strong and mighty numerous, and were eventually made slaves. (Genesis 46:26-27, Exodus 1:7-8). But the Lord brought them out of Egypt, divided the Red Sea so Israel walked safely through it, brought them through the wilderness, brought them into The Promised Land, and made them a nation.

The Lord has done the same for us today. We were slaves to sin, we were in the chains of the enemy. God loved us so much He sent His Son Jesus to us. He stepped out of Heaven, He lived, died and rose from the dead for us. Holy Perfect Jesus who never sinned was made sin so that we who were the slaves of sin were made to be righteous and holy. (2 Corinthians 5:16-21). Now we are a nation. 1 Peter 2:9-10 reads,

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Our response is to rightly worship, praise, and glorify Him to magnify His Holy Name to every nation and person. Our response is to obey Him, to love Him above all with everything we have and are, and to love the people He made as He loves them. Verses 13-15 say,

“I will come into your house with burnt offerings;
    I will perform my vows to you,
14 that which my lips uttered
    and my mouth promised when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer to you burnt offerings of fattened animals,
    with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams;
I will make an offering of bulls and goats.  Selah”

Our response in that love and in love others as He loves is to tell the world what God has done and who He is, the Savior Jesus, our Lord. Verses 16-20 read,

“Come and hear, all you who fear God,
    and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
17 I cried to him with my mouth,
    and high praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened.
19 But truly God has listened;
    he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

20 Blessed be God,
    because he has not rejected my prayer
    or removed his steadfast love from me!”

The Gospel is so simple that it is too simple for some. They just cannot accept that all we have to do is repent from our sins by asking the Lord God to forgive us and that He does. We do not have to earn His favor, he already chose us. We do not have to work for His reward, He gives us eternal life just by our faith.

There is no magic in the words of the sinner’s prayer. If we simply repeated the words yet treasured sin and never planned to obey the Lord then the prayer meant nothing, just as if it had never been said. God hears and knows our sincerity. He knows our hearts. When we pray with remorse for our wrongs and with faith that Jesus is the Christ, He hears, He listens, He attends, and He saves.

We have so much reason to praise the Lord! He has done great things. He created the world. He chose to love us and save us. He brought us from slavery to freedom. He wants to save every person in every nation. They can know the awesome Love of God by that praise.

Psalm 47 The King is Worthy to be Praised

Psalm 47

God is worthy to be praised! Our Lord and King Jesus our Savior is awesome. Yet so often I find my mouth empty when asked to give Him praise. I find the same words I always have when I praise Him. And that just shouldn’t be. I mean He is God! He created the universe. He spoke and there was light. He spoke and there was land and seas. He stepped out of Heaven to live perfectly, laid down His life, and rose from the dead, all so He could save a sinner like me. He has done so much, He loves so completely, and He is great. The Psalms are full of wonderful praise for God, and in reading them, I can find the words, the praise, and the adulation for Almighty God.

Psalm 47 is a song by the Sons of Korah to praise God the King of kings. Verses 1-4 read,

“Clap your hands, all peoples!
    Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,
    a great king over all the earth.
3 He subdued peoples under us,
    and nations under our feet.
4 He chose our heritage for us,
    the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah”

There are so many ways to give Him praise one way is simply to clap, to applaud Him. No words, just pure exaltation with an ovation of applause. Clapping our hands and dancing or moving rhythmically as we sing with our full voices to Him is another avenue of praise. Not every worship song must be slow and quiet, they can be joyful, loud, and full of shouts as well. Yes, there are times when we should be still and know He is God and there are times when our worship should be a celebration of unadulterated joy.

And why should we express our joy? Why should our joy overflow and be given back to The One who gave it to us? Because He is awesome. Because He is to be feared, intensely respected for what He can do. He can speak and the entire earth will be flooded. He can speak and cities are obliterated. He can speak and 5,000 men are fed with a little bread and fish. He can speak and people are healed, forgiven, and given eternal life.

Our King gave Israel many victories and they acknowledged that with cheers and celebration. He has given us victories as well. For us victory happened when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Ultimate triumph came when Jesus resurrected on the third day and defeated death, sin, and Satan. That victory will be manifested one day soon when the enemy will be thrown into the pit of Hell. All the nations, all the peoples who are not saved will suffer with him. But we will forever be with Jesus. Our heritage is the Kingdom of Heaven, not just one day in the future but here and now. Verses 5-7 read,

“God has gone up with a shout,
    the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises!
    Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing praises with a psalm!”

How many times has our Lord come down to do a mighty work for His people? He came and led them through the Red Sea, the wilderness, and into the Promised Land. He came down in to die on the cross and rose again. Then Jesus ascended to Heaven and gave us The Holy Spirit. He is with us always. He doesn’t have to come down to meet us for our needs. He is here meeting our needs, communing with us, and doing great works. But He will come down again. He will descend on a cloud and gather us to Him. He will lead the angel armies and destroy the works of Satan. He is our mighty King, worthy to be praised.

He is our King. One day every person will bend their knee to Him. One day every mouth will declare He is Lord. But He is King now. He rules now. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father right now. One day He will descend to the earth and every person will profess that He is King. For some that day will be a day of defeat, they will acknowledge Jesus too late. For us, we recognize Him now. We confess His Lordship and Sovereign Majesty now. And we, His royal heirs will one day be gathered before His throne clapping, singing, shouting, and celebrating with joy. Verses 8-9 read,

“God reigns over the nations;
    God sits on his holy throne.
9 The princes of the peoples gather
    as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
    he is highly exalted!”

There is not a kingdom on earth that does not belong to God. There are many people, many nations, many kingdoms who have not recognized God’s sovereignty but it makes it no less true that He is God, King of kings, Lord of lords, and Prince of peace.

There are so many reasons to praise Him. We praise Him for all He has done. We praise Him for all He will do. We praise Him because He is I Am, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. He is LORD God Almighty.

Psalm 43 Trust God to Carry you through Suffering and Make you More Like Him

7/3/2015

Picture

Psalm 43

This Psalm was likely written at the same time as Psalm 42. Its theme is similar and verse 5 of this psalm is the same as the refrain of verses 5 and 11 of the previous psalm. The aforementioned psalm is about feeling far away from the Lord and this one is about being persecuted. In Countries like the America and Great Britain we do not face much persecution for our faith. But we do face some and it is getting worse. Until The Day of Judgement there will be people who hate us, people who try to hurt us and hurt our testimony. Jesus promised us that. (John 15:18-25). The author of this Psalm knew where to look during his persecution. He trusted the Lord to take care of Him and left retribution to Him as well. Verse 1 reads,

“Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
    against an ungodly people,
from the deceitful and unjust man
    deliver me!”

His enemies wanted to get him. They wanted nothing more than his destruction. And the author cried out to God for rescue. But the Lord didn’t rescue him immediately. God does that for us sometimes. He holds back, he waits, always with a reason, and always for our benefit. Perhaps the author needed to be strengthened, perhaps he needed his faith tested and proved, or maybe the Lord used his enemies to discipline him. God waits sometimes. And we think we will never get through the situation intact. And maybe God doesn’t want us intact. He allows us to go through the fires to purify us. 1 Peter 1:5-9 say,

“who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

The writer understood this, but persistent in his prayer regardless. Even Jesus repeated His prayers through His suffering. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed three times, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”  (Matthew 26:38-44). Prayer allows us to maintain our dependence on God. It allows us to communicate with Him. We speak our hearts and God speaks His. In that communion He leads, teaches, comforts, encourages and exhorts. Verses 2-3 continue the prayer,

“For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you rejected me?
Why do I go about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?

3 Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
    and to your dwelling!”

While the author longed for the comfort and safety of God to remove his trial, he still asked for God’s light and truth to lead him. He didn’t want to depend on his emotions to lead him, or his faulty wisdom to guide his decisions. He wanted God to show Him the way. Prayer, meditation on God’s Word, and reflection of our communion with God brings us nearer to Him. As we contemplate God’s Word, He comforts us. He lets us know Him more deeply and we know that even while we are persecuted and suffering that God has us, we are safe in His hands, and our future is secure in Him.

James 1:2-8 reflects on the benefits of the trials we suffer and the communion with God as we depend on Him to teach us, guide us through them, and come out looking more like Jesus with the Fruit of the Spirit.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

Although we suffer God is always with us. And we can know it well and completely. If we know God well, we know He will make us wise, conform us to His image and bring us through. We can without a doubt praise Him and thank Him, even before the manifestation of our hope and prayers. The psalmist looked forward to praising God for the answer to his prayer. Verses 4-5 read,

“Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.”

No matter how low we feel, regardless of the depth of our grief or the intensity of our suffering we can rejoice, we can praise, and we can thank the Lord. He is with us. He has a purpose for all He allows us to go through. He loves us so deeply and knows us so well that we are free to trust Him with our lives, our salvation, and our hearts.

Psalm 18 Verses 1-3 Who is God? God Described by Some of His Names

6/8/2015

Psalm 18 Verses 1-3

These verses of David’s praise to The Lord God are so full of encouragement and inspiration for His people. They read,

“I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.”

David identifies God or describes Him in several ways here. Let’s look at them.

The Lord is my strength. He is not just strong. He is not only mighty. He is our strength, without Him we are weak. Without Him we are not able, but with Him, because of Him, and through Him we can. He is The Lord God Almighty, El, I Am.

Trying to do anything under our own power doesn’t glorify God. He used Moses, a man who didn’t like to speak, to lead a nation to freedom, give them His law, and be their judge. He used Peter an impulsive man who lived by his emotions to be the rock of the church and lead the Apostles. Those accomplishments were not because of their strength, but God’s.

The Lord is my rock. He is our unchanging firm foundation. The ground of our being. The word used is sela. It means a mountain, a cliff or a crag. It is a place of high safety, unreachable by the enemy. In Him we take refuge.

Refuge is protective confidence, a sanctuary a shelter or a harbor. It is safety.

The Lord is my God. He is our Almighty Supreme Sovereign Divine Holy Deity. He is All encompassing, all powerful, never changing, immortal God and Creator.

The Lord is my fortress. A fortress is a place inaccessible to the enemy, a large fortified building or city made for fighting but impenetrable to those outside. God is not susceptible to change or disturbance. In Him we are untouchable, we cannot be harmed.

The Lord is my deliverer. He carries us off from the enemy. He rescues and preserves us. He is our Savior, our Messiah. He delivered us from sin, from Satan’s lordship to the freedom of salvation.

The Lord is my shield. A shield is protective but also a movable defense. It is held with one arm while the other normally holds a weapon like a sword. The Hebrew word here, ganan not only means small shield, but it refers to the protective scaly hide of a crocodile. The crocodile is covered by many small shields fit together so that nothing can penetrate the hide and hurt the soft body. Today, I imagine body armor, like a bullet proof vest that covers the heart and lungs of the soldier. God is our shield, our body armor who will not let the arrows or bullets of the enemy penetrate us.

The Lord is my horn of salvation. The horn, such as the horn of an ox or a ram is a sign of strength, of royalty, and of kingship. The rays or radiance of the Lord we associate with his holiness is the same word as the horn of an ox. (Habakkuk). Many times throughout the Bible the word denotes kings, in Daniel and 1 Kings. The Horn of Salvation is the Mighty King of Deliverance, Jesus Christ. And when Jesus returns, He will announce His Salvation with trumpets, the blowing of the ram’s horn.

The Lord is my stronghold. Similar to a fortress, even a synonym for fortress, a stronghold is a high inaccessible place, a high fort, a fortified castle or garrison. The enemy can’t get to the stronghold. Those within it fight or their beliefs and their cause. We are God’s cause and He is ours. He fights for us, and we are protected within his safety.

Verse 3 sums up God described in verses 1-2.

“I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.”

We can depend on God, call on Him and praise Him because He is all the things David said He is. He is our rock, fortress, deliverer, God, refuge, shield, the horn of our salvation, and our stronghold. He saves us from everything, anything, and anyone which is against us.

Praise the Lord! Praise Him indeed!

Psalm 18 What Does Salvation Mean? What Does Salvation Involve?

6/7/2015

0 Comments

Psalm 18

David wrote this psalm to commemorate the day The Lord saved him from Saul. Saul who had once loved David had become paranoid to the point of such fear, hate, and resentment that he actively sought to destroy him. Saul and his army had become an enemy so strong that David was not sure he would survive, except for the promise of God that he would be king and His supernatural protection and deliverance of him.

Taking the time to acknowledge and praise God for the great and good things He does for you is important and often through those prayers, praises, and songs The Lord will give you a prophetic word, a promise, or an encouragement. He spoke prophetically through David’s praise to encourage and lead us today.

Verses 1-3 are the kind of eloquent and pure praise I wish would flow from my mouth to my Lord’s heart.

Look at those depictions and understand each one was true for David and is true for us. God is our foundation, the place we go to fight and remain safe from the enemy, He is our deliverer, our protection, our strong and saving King, and a protection that can’t be trespassed by the enemy. No matter what the enemy does to us or how he tries to hurt us, God will not allow him to destroy us. We will not be devastated, not because we are so strong and good and faithful, but because God is Mighty, Righteous, and Steadfast. We can’t fight the enemy on our own, but God has already defeated him. Just as Saul pursued David in order to keep him from being the king who God had anointed him to be, the enemy wants to keep us from inheriting the Kingdom.  Verses 4-6 describe David’s predicament when Saul tried to kill him.

“The cords of death encompassed me;
    the torrents of destruction assailed me;
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.”

But The LORD loved David and wouldn’t let it happen. He doesn’t like it when anyone tries to harm His children. He avenged David and He will also avenge us. The enemy will not escape retribution. David described God’s judgement on Saul as he prophetically describes God’s justice for us on The Day of Reckoning. Verses 7-9 paint the picture.

“Then the earth reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils,
    and devouring fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens and came down;
    thick darkness was under his feet.”

Verses 10-12 describe Jesus Christ leading the Heaven’s army.

“He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him,
    thick clouds dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
    hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.”

God loves us so intensely that He will not curb His anger that day. Verses 13-15 read,

“The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.”

In His wrath, we are not forgotten. He is our stronghold and He will gather us to Him. Verses 16-18 say,

“He sent from on high, he took me;
    he drew me out of many waters.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he delighted in me.”

On that Day, payment will come due. God will look at us and He won’t see our sin, our shortcomings, nor our mistakes, He will see Jesus’ righteousness as our righteousness. He will see our love, faith, kindness, and patience. Can you imagine? I know I too often see all the worst of myself, but God doesn’t. He sees all the goodness of Jesus. He sees His cherished, valued, esteemed precious child. His love is so extravagant that He not only sees the best of us, He makes us to be the best.

Each person will be judged by the standard he followed, either by the law or by Jesus blood.

Verses 24-28 read,

“So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save a humble people,
    but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my lamp;”

David knew he couldn’t be righteous on his own. He knew he couldn’t fight his enemy on his own. He depended on God for his salvation. So do we. It is our Lord who saves. It is our Lord who makes us righteous. It is our Lord who enables us to do good. It is our Lord who empowers us against the enemy. It is our Lord who makes us like Him. Verses 31-36 read,

“For who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is a rock, except our God?--
32 the God who equipped me with strength
    and made my way blameless.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
    and set me secure on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand supported me,
    and your gentleness made me great.
36 You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.”

Look at all the awesome things God enables us to do. He endows us with strength. He gives us authority to defeat the enemy with Him. (Verses 37-45). And God makes us kings with Him. He crowns us with His glory, life, righteousness, untouchable salvation, and rejoicing. Verses 46-48 read,

“The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation--
47 the God who gave me vengeance
    and subdued peoples under me,
48 who delivered me from my enemies;
    yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you rescued me from the man of violence.”

So praise the Lord for all He does for you. Exalt Him and he will lift you up too. As you consider all the awesomeness of God with you, He encourages, edifies, and extends you. If you think God hasn’t done anything for you, just think of all your salvation encompasses. The miracle of salvation is massive. Praise Him for that amazing gift and let the lost know how wonderful He is. Verses 49-50 read,

“For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and sing to your name.
50 Great salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
    to David and his offspring forever.”

John 16:16-22 Jesus Makes Joy out of Pain

John Chapter 16 Verses 16-22

Jesus continued teaching the disciples before His arrest and crucifixion. Although it was He would go through an ersatz trial, beatings, and torturous execution, His words were for His friends so that when they went through the grief of it, they would remember and have comfort. Verse 16 reads,

“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”

The disciples didn’t know what Jesus meant. They asked one another and wanted to ask Him. I think by now they knew that Jesus said things the way He did for a reason and they trusted Him to clarify it in His way rather than interrupt Him and ask for explanations. And Jesus did, but not by saying, “Remember, I told you I was going to die and rise from the dead three days later.” They would remember that when the time was right. He instead talked about the anguish and heartache they would experience. Verses 20-22 reads,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

They were about to go through deep pain and they would react in that pain. Although of the eleven men there, only John stayed with his Lord throughout the trial and crucifixion, all of them wept bitter tears and felt the intense distress of losing Him. They cried from their homes or other places they hid. But Jesus said the world will rejoice.

I believe He meant it two ways. On one hand the immediate majority of people overcome by the mob mentality cheered and celebrated Jesus’ crucifixion. They didn’t think they had to deal with His rabble rousing trouble making ways anymore. But in the truest way, the world rejoiced because Jesus’ death and resurrection meant hope and salvation, it brought forgiveness and reconciliation with God. His sacrifice gave us life.

The disciples would most certainly hurt and grieve but that sorrow would absolutely turn into joy. The joy of Jesus death and resurrection is deeper, truer, and greater than any joy that exists. It is perfect and it is ours because of what Jesus did. Jesus used the analogy of childbirth to explain it. I’ve been told and I can imagine that the pain of childbirth is horrendous. But after the pain there is a new life, a child filled with potential and the love the mother has for that child turns her excruciating pain into exquisite joy.

When Jesus suffered and died on the cross, His pain was intense but He faced it with joy because He knew the purpose He served. The disciples’ misery was also intense, most of them had abandoned Jesus and they felt guilt, loss of hope, loss of a true friend, and loss of a leader. But then Jesus rose from the dead and their sorrow became joy. They knew then more clearly than ever before that Jesus was the Son of God, Messiah, and Savior. He forgave them for their desertion and betrayals. They were overjoyed. But then He ascended and gave them the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came into them their joy was complete it was a joy that was in their very cores, they understood the beauty and mystery of the Gospel, they were able to reflect Christ, think like Him, and act like Him. And Jesus told them that joy could never be taken from them. It is was theirs forever, regardless of the suffering they experienced.

Isaiah 31:1-3 describes it like this,

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.”

And Psalm 30:11-12 says,

“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”

The pain in life is still there. God makes good come out of it, He turns your mourning into dancing, and gives you reason to praise. That same joy is yours, Believer. No matter what you go through you have God with you. He is in you making it possible for you to go through it, learn through it, and become more like Jesus through it. He saved you and gave you the ability to pass that good testimony on to others and share His joy with a world that needs Him.
