A Call to Worship in Spirit and in Truth

1/9/2017

In John 4:23-24 Jesus said,
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
To worship God wholly in spirit and in truth means much more than singing a few songs during the first fifteen minutes of a church service. It goes beyond listening to a teacher speak about the Bible. It is a lifestyle, being a hearer and a doer, offering ourselves as a living sacrifice, and pursuing the Kingdom of God and His righteousness above all else.
Romans 12:1-3 tells us,
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
And James 1:19-22 reads,
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Read Joel 2 12-17
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
    “return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
    and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
    for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
    and he relents over disaster.

Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
    and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
    for the Lord your God?

Blow the trumpet in Zion;
    consecrate a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
    gather the people.
Consecrate the congregation;
    assemble the elders;
gather the children,
    even nursing infants.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
    and the bride her chamber.

Between the vestibule and the altar
    let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep
and say, “Spare your people, O Lord,
    and make not your heritage a reproach,
    a byword among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
    ‘Where is their God?’”

Believer, are you living a lifestyle which bears the fruit of repentance? Are you contending for the faith by upholding truth, living pure, and fasting and praying so that you can walk in the power and authority given to you by Jesus Christ through His Holy Spirit? It is time to fast and pray. It is time to contend for the faith! It is time to do the will of the Father through the revelation of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit!
Joel 2:28-32 reads,
 “And it shall come to pass afterward,
    that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.
Even on the male and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

Believer, are you a man, woman, old, young, servant, son or daughter? Then the LORD wants to pour out His Holy Spirit on you. He is calling you to prophesy, dream, and see visions. He is calling you to embrace the power and authority given to you by Jesus Christ to wake up and let the Holy Spirit work through you by prophecy, dreams, and visions. He wants us to heal infirmities by His power, cast out demons by His authority, and do good works in His name! Now is the time. Today is the day.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33). We seek these things by prayer, fasting, and repentance. We seek these things by offering ourselves as living sacrifices to the King of Kings. We seek these things by being doers of the word and not hearers only. Let us worship God in completeness. Let us love the LORD our God with all our hearts and with all our souls and with all our strength and with all our minds and love our neighbors the way we love ourselves (Luke 10:27).

Genesis 2:4-25 God Created Man as a Distinctive Masterpiece

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
Genesis 2:4-25
God created man quite uniquely from the way He created every other living thing on the earth. God said, “Let there be…” and the vegetation sprung forth, and the sea creatures and the birds came to be, and the animals of the earth were brought out of the earth. But for man it was different. For man He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” And then He created us in His own image. (Genesis 1:26-27). But man’s creation was even more special, we were made by God’s word yes, but we were also made by His hand and given life by His breath, His Spirit. Verses 4-7 read,
These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature
God had made the angels by His breath (Psalm33:6) and He gave life to man by that same breath. This breath of life from God Himself gave man the ability to understand, choose, and think. Job 32:8 says it like this,
But it is the spirit in man,
    the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.

The breath of God is the Holy Spirit of God. Remember too that life was and is in Jesus, life came through Him (John 1:3-4). And when we were made in God’s image He gave us a soul by His Spirit. I picture The Son of God breathing His Holy Spirit into man that day. The creation of man was very special. God made man and then He made a place just for him, a place he could care for and enjoy. He made Eden. Verses 8-15 in The Message describes it,
Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man he had just made in it. God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil.
10-14 A river flows out of Eden to water the garden and from there divides into four rivers. The first is named Pishon; it flows through Havilah where there is gold. The gold of this land is good. The land is also known for a sweet-scented resin and the onyx stone. The second river is named Gihon; it flows through the land of Cush. The third river is named Hiddekel and flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 God took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order.
Eden was paradise on earth, it was lush and had nearly everything the man would need and want. It also had two special trees. It had the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. And God gave the man a rule, one simple rule. Verses 16-17 read,
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Why would God do that? Why would He place this tree in the Garden if man couldn’t eat from it? God had given man a soul with the ability to choose, He had given him freewill. What good is freedom if it can’t be exercised? If man could choose to obey or disobey but there was nothing to obey, then would freewill have been much of a gift? The man could choose God, who is all good and His understanding or He could elect to disobey and take the knowledge of good and evil.
Man had nearly everything he could need, but not quite everything. God was about to fix that, but He wanted the man to understand it too. Verses 18-20 read,
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature,  that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

God had already made the animals and He brought each one to Adam to name. In naming them Adam would look to see which of them would be the right companion for Him. God knew none would give Adam everything he required in a mate, but Adam needed to see it too. None of the animals could talk and think the way Adam could, none had been formed by God’s hands in His image.  None could complement who Adam was in the perfect way. So God completed the male by making the female. Verses 21-25 read,
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
God could have formed another man for Adam the same way He had formed Adam. But another man would not have been the perfect complement to Adam, he would have been the same as Adam. Just as Adam’s creation had been distinct, so too was Eve’s. He made her out of man. She was made of the same stuff but formed to be a counterpart, an accompaniment to balance and fulfil Adam. God gave His second command that future generations would leave their parents and hold fast, that is to cling firmly to grasp to their wives so tightly that they would become one united being. Adam and Eve were perfect, innocent, and complete. They were the crown of creation, the reason God made the heavens and the earth and He proclaimed it very good (Genesis 1:31).
God Himself knit you together. You are wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:13-14). You are distinctive from all of Creation as a masterpiece of God. You are not here by accident or happenstance, no matter the circumstances of your conception or birth. God chose to give you life. Praise Him. I for one am really thankful He made you. I’m glad that you are who you are and I thank the Lord right now for you. As you read to or listen to my words we are connected. We are each meeting a need in one another even if for a brief moment and that is a miracle. So thank God for you and the life the Lord gave you.

Deuteronomy 25 Humiliation is not Godly

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10
Deuteronomy 25
God is not into humiliating anyone. Punishments were not given to strip someone’s dignity, laws were not formed to shame a person. Punishments and laws are for teaching, building up, and discipline. Verses 1-3 read,
If there is a dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty, 2 then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense. 3 Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.
Very often today people feel punishment ought to include degradation, especially with social media being so widespread. I’ve seen photos of people having to wear the signs of their wrongdoing, so they wouldn’t repeat the sin, not because they were taught the reason but because humiliation would supposedly cause them to not to repeat the crime. Tearing them down that way causes bitterness and resentment, not love and discipline. God clearly does not want us to humiliate one another. The worst beating a man should receive was forty strikes of the whip. Later, to ensure that this law was not broken, people were whipped forty less one. But also lost was that each case was different, not every case deserved forty lashes. What was also lost was that the lashes were meant to be the entire punishment. The fact that dignity should not be stripped from the man was lost.
When Jesus was punished during and after His trial, they beat Him, derided Him, and put him to death (John 19). The law was broken in every step of His trial and crucifixion. He endured shame at every step of the crucifixion for us. Hebrews 12:2 reads,
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Love does not humiliate, it is not arrogant or rude, it does not rejoice at wrong-doing. Yet even through all that hate, Jesus bore all our sins, He endured. In living out love, in walking in the Spirit, in becoming the image of Christ, we must exemplify love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a reads,
 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends.

If we love one another we don’t humiliate each other. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). We exemplify Christ, so others can see Him. Degrading people doesn’t let them see Jesus, it causes hate, and it kills the spirit. We do not break their hearts. The sinner (saved or not) must break his own heart.
Humiliation can come in many ways. Depriving someone of a need or a livelihood causes humiliation. Verse 4 reads,
You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.
Even a legacy should not be stolen from someone, dignity must be upheld even after death. Verses 5-10 read,
If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband's brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. 6 And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel. 7 And if the man does not wish to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’ 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’ 9 then his brother's wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother's house.’ 10 And the name of his house shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’
Pulling off a sandal was a symbol of shame which eventually became a symbol for passing property to another person. In the case. Making sure a brother had a legacy was important so his name should continue on. The brother who chose not to give his brother an heir was shaming his brother. To take the shame away from the dead brother, the wife would have to shame the brother in public and make it equal. This ceremonial degradation allowed the brother not to marry the woman without bringing and dishonor to her or to the brother. When a person is forced to marry against his will, the future may hold abuse, hate, and other indignity.
Even in a fight, there are lines we just do not cross. Verses 11-12 read,
When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, 12 then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity.
To do something like that, to hurt a man in such a horrible way was not only unfair, but the injury humiliates the man immediately and can cause permanent damage that will continue to humiliate him in the future.
In order not to disgrace others, we have to not disgrace ourselves; we have to be fair. Verses 13-16 read,
You shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house two kinds of measures, a large and a small. 15 A full and fair weight you shall have, a full and fair measure you shall have, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For all who do such things, all who act dishonestly, are an abomination to the Lord your God.

Having two different weights meant that you carried with you the ability to cheat others. You had a weight that looked heavier or lighter than it really was and so stole. Being a cheat beings dishonor to the people you deal with. Acting in fairness and honesty shows respect and brings honor.
It is up to God to get vengeance, it is up to Him to decide who is punished and who is not. If someone treats us unfairly, we do not have to worry about getting back, humiliating them, or anything else. God takes care of it. Our ability to refrain from shaming one another shows our faith in The Lord. Verses 17-19 read,
Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

It is natural to want to heap shame on people who hurt us. It is supernatural to love our enemies, to pray for them, and bless them. It will never be the humiliation and condemnation of another that brings them to Jesus. It will be His love manifested in us that reveals the truth. Conviction and shame are very different. Conviction leads to repentance and life. Shame turns the focus onto the self and leads to death.

Colossians 1 Our Hope is the Image of Christ

2/20/2016

0 Comments

Colossians 1
Today we begin reading Paul and Timothy’s letter to the church at Colossae. As with most of Paul’s letters, he begins by telling the church how much he loves them. Verses 1-8 read,
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.”
Because Paul loved the church so much, he wanted them to grow into who they were meant to be. Who we are meant to be is the pinnacle of who we are created to be, that is the image of Christ. Man was created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). But the fall brought sin and death into the world and keeps humanity from living that image. When we come to Christ, The Holy Spirit comes in and begins working on us, changing us back to who we are supposed to be, the image of Christ. The more mature we are, the more we look and behave like Jesus. Maturity or looking like Jesus is the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is love and love shows in walking like Jesus.
Paul encouraged the Colossians that he saw the fruit of maturity in them, he saw the love they had for all the saints. They didn’t love because they were good people. They loved because of the hope laid up in heaven. What hope is the hope laid up in Heaven? It is our ultimate glorification when we will be perfected in the image of Christ. Every bit of sin and flesh we hold onto now will be gone and we will finally be exactly who we are meant to be seamlessly united with Jesus Christ in New Jerusalem for eternity. 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 says,
“I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory?
    O death, where is your sting?”

And the author of Hebrews wrote in Hebrews 12:22-25,
“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
When we read about hope in the Bible, it is not talking about wishing or yearning it is talking about confidence in God’s promise as already fulfilled, faith. Hope gives us the courage to keep going through all the muck and mire of life because we know what and who awaits us. Theses promises such as eternal life and perfection are so sure, that we can consider them already done. Hebrews 10:14 reads,
“For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
Jesus perfected us, past tense! It is already done even though we are going through the process still. He perfected or completed us who are being sanctified or purified and made holy. Our love for Jesus causes us to love one another. Our love for one another causes us to want each other to become mature, to grow in the Spirit and be more like Jesus. Jesus’ image is the fruit we bear and Jesus’ image or His glory is what increases our faith and the church. Because of our love for one another we pray for each other to constantly and consistently grow. Verses 8-14 read,
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Paul’s prayer for the church in Colossae encourages us that we should be filled with knowing God’s will along with discernment and understanding. We do not just say, God’s will is that all people come to know Him (1 Timothy 2:4) or God’s will is all people glorify Him (Isaiah 43:7). We are filled with it, we act on it, we walk and we bear fruit in every good work. And doing so, increases our knowledge of God which is also God’s will (Hosea 6:6). It is not an easy walk. It takes strength, endurance and patience. But we have our hope and so we can walk that walk with persistence, fortitude, and joy! What is our hope? We are delivered, saved from the kingdom of darkness, ignorance and slavery to the prince of the world and now we are in the Kingdom of God. We belong to the King of kings, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Knowing God is His will for us. Knowing God results in obedience, faith, and maturity. Knowing God brings us into unity with Him and so conforms us to the Image of Jesus Christ. To know God we must know Jesus. Who is Jesus? Verses 15-20 tell us,
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”
Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Hebrews 1:3-4 reads,
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”
The fullness of God, everything God is dwelled in Jesus. If we want to know who God is, we need to know Jesus. Jesus made it possible to know or unite with The Father because He, the perfect image of God paid the price of death on the cross for us. He resurrected to give us eternal life (John 11:25). He ascended to give us The Holy Spirit and so fully unite us with God (John 16:7). The Holy Spirit is the nature of God and He chooses to indwell us. He chooses to transform us into Jesus’ image. We can know God because we have His own Spirit in us. Verses 21-23 describe it this way,
“And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.”
If we love God, if Jesus is our King, if The Holy Spirit indwells us we will know Him and we will mature and want to know Him more. We want this for ourselves, for one another, and for the sake of the lost. But the transformation does not happen automatically. We walk with endurance, patience and joy through the suffering. It is suffering that teaches us obedience and it is suffering that develops the character of Jesus in us. Romans 5:2-5 reads,
“Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Remember what that hope is, it is us perfected to the image of Christ and living absolutely united with him eternally. That is how we go through the trials with endurance, patience and joy. Are we crazy to rejoice in suffering? No, we are wise to rejoice in suffering. We can take joy in suffering because we recognize God’s mercy through it. Verses 25-29 read,
“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
What Paul is saying when he says, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body” is that suffering is what is making him more like Jesus. As he became more mature and knew God more, he was responsible to teach others what he knew. As we grow to be more like Jesus, we have a responsibility to live it out and tell others who Jesus is and how wonderful He is. Unity with Jesus and His Body requires we all become the image of Christ. The more we know God, the more we become like Him, the more we want to know Him. It is a lovely cycle but not a circle an infinite spiral which brings us closer and closer to perfect Jesus. The more mature we are the more we love Jesus and one another. The more we love one another the more mature we want all of us to be. It is another infinite spiral which brings us closer to Jesus and more united with the body. Love and knowing God which leads to maturity form the double helix of the kingdom of God.

Revelation 22:6-21 Prophecy and The Grand Invitation

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Revelation 22:17
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. Revelation 22:17
Revelation 22:6-21
This book is intimidating to some. It seems mysterious and dark to some, exciting to others, and terrifying to others. But it is important we read and heed this book of prophecy. Depending upon our viewpoint we either wait hopefully, apprehensively, fearfully, or apathetically for its fulfillment. But as with all of God’s prophecy, it is meant to warn us, prepare us, call us, teach us and encourage us. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4, 2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Corinthians 14:3). The central goal of prophecy is recorded in Amos 3:7-8.
“For the Lord God does nothing
    without revealing his secret
    to his servants the prophets.
8 The lion has roared;
    who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;
    who can but prophesy?”

It is a revelation of the will of God. He wants us to know. He tells us quite clearly what His plans are. This book is not meant to make us cower, it is meant to prepare us for what is coming and embolden us to action. Too many people have not read or heard the words of the Revelation for themselves. They have a fantastic and horror-filled Hollywood vision of what the book includes. Even people who have read it have chosen to ignore the Holy Spirit and assign twisted and strange meanings to Jesus’ Revelation. Believer, you and I have read this book together. We have not skipped one verse, one word, or letter. I have done my best to not interpret or discern anything without God’s Holy Spirit. I have done my best to back everything with scripture. We do not have to be shocked at the state of the world as Jesus’ coming gets closer. We do not have to tremble in fear of the unknown. God has made it known and we have read it.
The final verses of this book invite us to take note of what we read, to put it into action, and to take part in the work of the Saints in these last days. Verses 6-7 read,
“And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
7 “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
This is what Revelation is about, this is what all the prophecies that came before it are about, and this is what all the scriptures are about; Jesus is coming soon. We are not only to note, hear, or read the words of the prophecy of this book, we are to keep them. The word keep is the Greek word threw (tay-reh'-o) it means to hold fast, protect, and to undergo in a militant manner. Verses 8-9 read,
“I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”
John had been warned a couple of times previously not to worship the angels giving him the messages but the overwhelming emotion of everything he had received must have made him want to fall down and worship the messenger and the message. Isn’t this the case today? How many people do you know who seem to worship the Book of Revelation, all end-time prophecy, or the people who teach on the subjects? It is not the prophet or the prophecy we worship. We are told to worship God. But we can’t go the other direction and ignore the words either. Remember we are to actively keep the words here. People will and do go right on living their lives and ignore prophecy, but that is not our directive.
The angel calls John and his brothers, prophets. Who are John’s brothers? Believers, they are you and me. Under the Old Testament God chose a few men and women, poured out His Spirit on them and assigned them to be prophets. But today we are all prophets. Not everyone has the gift of prophecy, but everyone can prophesy (1 Corinthians 12:27-31). And today more and more people are being gifted with prophecy. Joel 2:28-29 says it this way,
“And it shall come to pass afterward,
    that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
    your old men shall dream dreams,
    and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit.”

So then that makes us responsible for the words of Revelation, the Scriptures, and the words God speaks to us. Verses 10-11 say,
“And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
We are to take prophecy seriously. We have to know God to hear and recognize His voice (John 10:27). We have to discern what is from the Lord and what is false (1 John 4:1). And 1 Thessalonians 5:17-21 tells us,
“pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good.”
Jesus reminds us what the prophecies of this book are about in verses 12-16.
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Certainly there are people who fear this book. There are numerous horror movies, TV shows, documentaries, and even so-called Christian films which all distort, falsify, and exaggerate the prophecy of the end-times, Jesus’ return, and Judgement Day. They drum up fear and emotion and use the book to propagandize for personal goals. But we are not called to fear this book. Jesus is the Bright Morning Star, the Alpha and Omega and our Savior. What do we have to fear if we have Jesus? We do not have to be afraid of the events described in Revelation. We are prepared for them. We must remain aware, warn others, and let others know they are invited to the wedding feast. Verse 17 says,
“The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
The Spirit says, “Come.” We the Bride say, “Come.” Those who hear the invitation say, “Come.” Those who seek God say, ‘Come.” What do we come to? We come to eternal life, where who we seek is found. We are thirsty and the living water is waiting for us. It is free, Jesus already paid for it. What an amazing invitation!!! And when we receive that invitation, we are to become an invitation to others. Do your life, your attitude, and your words lovingly say, “Come” or do they send another message?
Once again, we are warned to take the prophecy of Revelation seriously. It is not a fairy tale or a scary story. It is the truth. Adding our interpretation based on anything or anyone other than the Word and the Spirit has deadly consequences for us and those who hear the words we spread. Leaving the parts we do not like out of it has the same results. Verses 18-21 read,
“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”
The Spirit says, “Come” to you and to others. Bride of Christ, do you say, “Come?” Jesus is coming and soon He will say, “Come up here.” Are you ready?

Revelation 4 The Open Invitation to the Throne of God

Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11
Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11
Revelation 4
In this chapter John saw the throne of God, with the Lord seated on it, surrounded by heavenly beings and twenty four elders worshipping Him. Verses 1-2 read,
“After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.”
There was a door standing open in Heaven. The door Jesus opened which none can shut (Revelation 3:7-8), the open summons to come into God’s presence through salvation. The open door is  the unrestricted invitation to boldly approach the throne of God. Hebrews 4:14-16 reads,
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Even as Jesus revealed Himself to John in all His perfect glory, He still invited him to come, He still welcomed Him to remember His compassion. Since we fell away from God He has invited us into His presence. He called out to Adam and Eve in the garden to walk with Him (Genesis 3:8-9). He called Moses as Israel’s representative to ‘come up here’ after He had given him the covenant. Exodus 24:12-13 says,
“The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God.”
Jesus called the disciples and us to follow Him (Matthew 4:19). When Jesus brings home the church, He will say ‘Come up here’ and we will come. (Revelation 11:12).
Verse 3 describes the One sitting on the throne, God in His complete perfection. The LORD God, The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
“And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.”
God glory is utterly beautiful and brilliantly awesome. God was beyond description and John could only use the most beautiful things he knew to describe His intense radiance. When Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel saw God, they could only describe His glory by saying, “under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness” (Exodus 24:10). John used three precious stones to describe God. Jasper was the most precious of stones, clear like crystal. (Revelation 21:11). What John called jasper, we call diamond. The diamond of God makes His light shine and reflect all around. The Diamond represents God the Father.  The carnelian is defined by Webster’s as “A variety of chalcedony, of a clear, deep red, flesh red, or reddish white color. It is moderately hard, capable of a good polish, and often used for seals.” Other sources described the stone as layers of these three reds so that it was striped. The carnelian represents Jesus and His redemption. The emerald is the same stone Moses used to describe God in Exodus. It was often used for signets (royal authoritative seals) and its appearance of a rainbow infers the sealed promise of salvation. The emerald represents The Holy Spirit of God.
Verse 4-8 moves from the throne to who and what surrounds it.
“Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, 6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.”
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: 7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. 8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
    who was and is and is to come!”

 Although the identity of the twenty four elders is never blatantly explained in the Bible, it is clear to me who they are. (I must add that this is my personal revelation and interpretation and while some Biblical authorities agree, some do not.) They are seated on thrones next to God. We were seated with Him when we were saved (Ephesians 2:6). They are wearing golden crowns on their heads just as we are promised to be given (Revelation 2:11, 1 Peter 5:4). They are clothed in white garments, the garments of salvation (Revelation 3:5). Nowhere do angels sit on thrones with God, wear golden crowns or wear the garments described for us. I believe the twenty four elders are the faithful remnant of Israel and the Church, the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve tribes of the church together praising God day and night.
The seven spirits of God is the expression of The Holy Spirit in His complete and perfect manifestation as He was in Jesus and as He will be in us at our completion (Isaiah 11:1-2). Verses 9-11 describe the activity that will surround the Throne of God.
“And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
    to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
    and by your will they existed and were created.”

One day we will sing that praise to God and be with Him forever and ever. But eternal life does not begin when we die physically or when we go to Heaven. Eternal life began at the moment we answered The Father’s call, were saved by Jesus’ grace and sealed by The Holy Spirit. We can now begin living as the elders we are supposed to be. We can sing now. We can give Him glory and honor now. I encourage you to meditate on the greatness of God and on His worthiness to receive glory and honor and power. Meditate on the Creator and that you were created because He wanted you to be created, that all things created were by His will, and that the earth and everything in it belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1).

Revelation 2:12-17 The Letter to the Church in Pergamum
When Jesus described Himself to the believers in Pergamum in verse 12, He revealed Himself this way,
“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.”
Jesus has the sharp two-edged sword, He is the sharp two-edged sword, and He wields it better than any other, He wields it perfectly. What is the sword He has and uses? Scriptures refer to it several times. Hebrews 4:12-13 read,
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
It is the living word of God and it is powerful. It cuts deep, perfectly dividing soul and spirit and getting straight the core of the matter. Have you ever worked with bones, soup bones, left over chicken bones, ox tails or whatever? Have you seen the substance, the marrow on the inside of the bone? It is not easily removed. The marrow which makes the blood cells for the body and flavors the broth it is cooked in is within the bone, protected by it. When the bone is cut, the marrow may be exposed but it is still difficult to pull out. This is the picture I want you to envision in order to understand how exact and sharp the double edged sword is.
When used in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, the Word of God gets right to the matter. It does not miss. When we use it without the Holy Spirit, we may misquote, misinterpret, or miss the mark. Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and The Spirit tells you, tell them this verse, tell them that phrase. And you think but what does that have to do with their situation? But you obey, and the person immediately has let her walls down, or she breaks down crying, or smiles with relief and joy. That is the living and active word of God dividing heart and soul, joint and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Go back and read Hebrews 4:12-13. Verse 13 describes the word, not as it but him. “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” The Word of God, the sharp and two-edged sword is not only the scriptures and spoken words of God, it is God, it is His manifested will, Jesus Christ. John 1:1-5 reads,
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
And 1 John 1:1-4 says,
“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”
Jesus is the Word of God, which is God’s will revealed and made tangible. Jesus not only is the two edged sword but He exerts it so perfectly that it is a part of Him. Revelation 1:16 describes Jesus this way,
“In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.”
The sword, God’s Word comes from Jesus’ mouth. Jesus words are the word of God. Jesus spoken words are the manifested will of God, because remember Jesus is God. (see John 1:1-5). Revelation 19:11-16 describe Jesus as He uses the sword to lead the vast Heavenly Army.
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
Jesus didn’t use the Word of God as a cookie cutter, taking cute, nice little sayings out of the scriptures and saying, “There there there, God won’t give you more than you can handle…” He used the scriptures truthfully with God’s purpose. He fought the enemy and wouldn’t give into temptation. (Matthew 4:4). He showed the world, who He was. (Luke 4:17-19). He taught and exhorted. (Matthew 5). He confronted and convicted. (Matthew 15:7-9). He comforted and encouraged. (Mark 12:35-37).
And you and I, Believer have the two edged word as well, and we can use it Psalm 149 describes what we can do with that sword. It reads,
“Praise the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of the godly!
2 Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
    let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!
3 Let them praise his name with dancing,
    making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
4 For the Lord takes pleasure in his people;
    he adorns the humble with salvation.
5 Let the godly exult in glory;
    let them sing for joy on their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats
    and two-edged swords in their hands,
7 to execute vengeance on the nations
    and punishments on the peoples,
8 to bind their kings with chains
    and their nobles with fetters of iron,
9 to execute on them the judgment written!
    This is honor for all his godly ones.
Praise the Lord!”

What did Jesus, the Word of God have to say to the church in Pergamum and for us? Let’s read. Verse 13 says,
“‘I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.”
Jesus called the city, the throne of Satan. It was a center of worship of many gods throughout its history, including Greek gods like Asclepium, and many Egyptian gods such as Serapeum, and Trajan. Yet, despite the many gods worshipped there, despite being the seat of Satanic power the church thrived there. They were faithful. They held fast to Jesus’ name even under persecution, torture and death. They took so seriously the words written to them in Revelation that they erected a monument inscribed with Jesus words to remember them.

But not everyone in the church was so diligent to the Word of God. Verses 14-15 read,
“But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.”
Balaam was a prophet of God who used the word for selfish purposes, He used the Word of God for King Balak to weaken Israel for his own profit. (Numbers 22, 23, & 24). Ask yourself, examine your heart, ask the Lord to reveal to you if you have ever done this. Have you like some in the Pergamum taken God’s Word and used it to lift yourself up, push your own agenda, or gain what you wanted?  God can give anyone His Word, He gave it to a donkey. (Numbers 22:22-35). He chose to give to you and me. It is for His glory and His will that we are given this extraordinary gift.
Remember from our previous study the Nicolaitans allowed the teaching of multiple religions and occult beliefs into the church. They like many today believed in a “coexisting and intermingling of religions. This is something we have to be assiduous about. We have to keep our motives and the Truth we proclaim pure. We have to guard the Gospel of Christ. Jude 1:3-4 reads,
“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.”
Verse 16 reads,
“Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.”
Notice Jesus tells the whole church to repent. He tells the faithful church, who allowed some to use God’s Word for their own causes and to intermingle beliefs to repent. And the consequences He promises are for those who held Balaam’s and the Nicolaitian teachings. As the body of Christ, we understand the importance of each and every one of us. We contend for the faith as a whole, not just mine or even ours, but the Faith.
Verse 17 reads,
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.”
If we pay attention to this warning, if we conquer the enemy and hold fast to the Word of God and keep it pure in our hearts, minds, and lives Jesus will give us the hidden manna. His deeper word, the mytery of the Gospel, not obvious to the world. Manna was the bread of God given to Israel in the desert. God gives us bread today as well. John 6:28-34 describes it.
“Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
Later in John 6:47-51 Jesus said,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Jesus is the bread of Life, He is the hidden manna. He is Salvation. We honor Jesus, the Author of Salvation, the Giver of Life, and our Redeemer when we take the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 says,
“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”
He will also give us a new name on a white stone, one only we will know. His Word just for us. Names signify identity. God gave many people new names as He gave them new identities. Abram and Sarai became Abraham and Sarah, Jacob was renamed Israel, Simon was called Peter, and Saul became Paul. But the new name we will receive in Heaven is more significant it declares our innocence and will represent our completion, our perfection, and our absolute unity with God, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Believer, remember Jesus is the Word of God, the two-edged sword. The sword comes from His mouth, it does us no good if we do not speak it or use it and only keep it sheathed within our hearts. It does us no good and in fact harm if we use it wrongly with wrong intentions, twisted for our own desires, or sullied by words from Satan disguised as other religions.

Letters from Jesus

I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! Psalm 119:32
I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! Psalm 119:32
 As I began reading Revelations chapters 2 and 3, I asked myself what it would be like to get a letter from Jesus like the seven churches in Asia. Can you imagine receiving a letter from Jesus? How wonderful would that be? But wait, Jesus knows everything about me, He knows the motivations, intentions, the good and the bad. Maybe hearing directly from Jesus wouldn’t be such a good thing. Proverbs 15:11 says,
“Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord;
    how much more the hearts of the children of man!”

Do I seriously want Jesus to see the darkness inside of me? Do I want Him revealing my darkness to me? Very often, in the Bible when men and women have been faced with Jesus, their reaction has been utter shame at their sinfulness. When the prophet Isaiah came into His presence his reaction was recorded in Isaiah 6:4-5.
“And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
But The Lord doesn’t only convict us of our sin, He makes us aware of it so we can repent. He forgives us and He makes us new. He loves us too much to leave us helpless and dead in our sin. He made a way, He is The Way. He makes us so new, Jesus compared it to being reborn in His conversation with Nicodemus. (John 3:1-21).
1 Peter 1:3-5 says it like this,
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
So yes I think a letter from Jesus would be good. He doesn’t want us staying the same as we were when He saved us. He wants us changing to be more and more like Him. We all struggle with our flesh and we strive to meet the goal of the image of Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit transforms us. Every Christian still deals with that struggle, even Paul dealt with it. (Romans 7:13-25). But don’t forget, there is hope. Jesus came and conquered sin and death. The Holy Spirit is with is and He is changing us. Romans 8:1-5 says,
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”
This walk is active and we are involved participants, not passive observers. Yes, I would like a letter from Jesus. Of course, I have letters from Jesus. I have time with Him where he speaks directly to me. He fills the Bible with His Word. I am surrounded by my brothers and sisters in Christ who are filled with The Holy Spirit.
Jesus told us to pray in private, to spend time alone with God. Matthew 6:5-8 says,
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
The Bible is God’s letter to us, God’s Word to us. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 says,
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Of course Scripture speaks to us, not only in our private time with the Lord but also through our time with one another. We love another and we are commended to speak to one another, lift another up, and build one another up, and even judge one another with God’s Word with our gifts and the Bible through the Holy Spirit. Colossians 3:12-17 says it this way,
“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
We can’t simply hear what Jesus says and say, “Good, now I know.” According to the children’s PSAs of my youth and G.I. Joe, knowing is only half the battle. James 1:22-27 says,
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
Let’s read some of what He wrote to the church in Revelation. He had letters for seven specific and real churches in Asia. But those letters reflect much of Christendom and I know for me, I can see myself reflected in them. So tomorrow, let’s read the letters Jesus wrote to us in Revelation 2 and 3.

2 Timothy 4 The Truth of God or the "Truth" of the World

2 Timothy 4
In the previous chapter Paul warned us about listening to false teachings, in this one Paul warned us to be sure and not preach or teach those things, even though people long to hear them. He tells Timothy to preach the Word. And he doesn’t say it lightly.
Verses 1-2 say this,
“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”
This is a command and a serious one which is worded almost as an oath. Paul fully expects Timothy to understand it that way as well. In the presence of God and Christ Jesus, not only as witnesses to the agreement but also as the judge of the living and dead. Teaching and preaching something other than the Word of God is not acceptable and will be punished. Remember that God doesn’t want us leading anyone away from Him and He promised that people who cause others to sin would prefer to have a millstone fastened around their neck and drowned in the depths of the ocean. (Matthew 18:6). That statement is in Matthew, Mark and Luke. For something to be in three out of the four gospels lets you know it is important to God. If it is important to God, it should be important to us.
Why should we be diligent about teaching the truth? It is too easy to give in to spirituality and the feel good stuff people want to hear. It is too easy to give in to the stuff the world wants to hear rather than what they need to hear. Verses 3-5 read,
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
Paul was in prison and he knew he would soon die. The many people who had once worked alongside him and abandoned him. Only Luke had stayed with Paul. Some had left because they were too in love with the world, others had followed false teaching. So he encouraged Timothy to stay on track, so that he would not be one of those who fell away. He asked Timothy to come visit him soon and bring Mark with him. (Verses 9-18).
Parts of this letter are just heart-wrenching to read. Paul knew his death was not far off. He was in chains for the Gospel and he would die for the Gospel.  But he was okay with it, because He had seen God’s work completed in him and he knew his eternity.
Verses 6-8 say this,
“For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
Paul asked Timothy to do him several favors. Verse 13 reads,
“When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.”
Although in chains, Paul wanted to study scripture. He cared about the truth and knew where to find it. We find the truth in the scriptures and via Holy Spirit. Everything He tells you can be backed up by scripture. So if you are unsure how to hear Him or if your faith doesn’t allow you to know it is God speaking to you, then check the Bible, if it isn’t in there, it is not God.
When you hear teaching and especially when you teach, make certain everything is backed up scripturally. Do not make one point without the Bible. A little wrong is still wrong. Are you careful to preach the Word of God? Do you teach from sources other than the Bible? People can write books, teach lessons, and have studies based on books that appear to be based on the Bible, but are not. Verses taken out of context can be used to fit any perspective one wants to get across. The way to make sure you are not being led astray is to know the Bible and to know the Lord. It is to stay sober-minded, endure suffering, and do the work of an evangelist.
Do you think that because you are not an evangelist, preacher, or teacher that you don’t have to be concerned with this? Wrong! Telling other people about Jesus is not a choice. It is an integral part of the command to love others and it is the heart of the great commission given to us by Jesus before He ascended to Heaven. If you are not leading others to Christ, you are not obeying Him.

Faith is Deliberate and Active

2 Timothy Chapter 2 has so much great wisdom filling it, it reminds me a bit of the scene in Hamlet where dad Polonius is saying goodbye to his son Laertes. As Laertes prepares to leave for France his father takes time to give him helpful advice on how to behave like a man with integrity. This kind of advice from Paul to Timothy brings to mind the close relationship of these two godly men.
In verses 1-7 Paul compares being a Christ Follower to a soldier, and athlete, and a farmer. Soldiers work hard to please the one who enlisted them, they do not get involved in civilian matters. Athletes compete according to the rules, and if they don’t, they are disqualified. Farmers that work hard are the ones that deserve the best of the crop. Verses 1-7 read,

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.”

Apply those metaphors to your Christian walk. Are you staying out of worldly matters, pleasing God as your King? Are you staying pure, away from false prophecies and prophets to run the race well? Is there a crown in your future? Do you work hard to grow the fruit of the Spirit, are you nurturing it and putting the proper seeds, water and light into your crop?
Paul speaks to your role in this Christian life as being an active one. Being active in your salvation doesn’t ignore grace. It doesn’t retract from the work of the Holy Spirit. Your effort is in response to the salvation you receive. Your Salvation is a gift. There are no strings attached. But what you do with that gift makes a world of difference.
You can just take it and let it be. You can let God change you but refuse do anything with those changes. It won’t be long before your stagnant life and its rotting fruit sit inactive. Weeds will cover you to the point that no one would recognize or use the fruit God produced in you. The fruit will shrivel up, and God will choose to use other more productive better tended trees for the jobs He has. You will need pruning, weeding and a great deal of fertilizer to get you back to health again. That isn’t a pleasant experience, but it is a necessary one. Luke 13:6-9 is a parable about a barren fig tree. It reads,

“And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8 And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

You are meant to bear fruit (have visible useful results) from your relationship with God, if there are none, he’ll dig around you, add manure, and see if you’ll yield some fruit. That is not a painless process.
I want to be used by my Lord often. I want to please Him. I want to make a difference in this world for Jesus. I am sure you do too. Paul encourages us to remember this great and perfect truth in verses 8-13.
“Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for:
If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.”

Jesus is alive. We may be bound by chains, doubts, or inadequacies but Jesus is not. The truth is the truth regardless and The Word is not bound. There is power in the gospel. And Jesus is here with us through everything. Re-read the promise of verses 11-13. That is great news, great power, and great responsibility. God works through your inadequacies, your weaknesses, and your suffering. In fact He is glorified when you let Him use you through them. An incredibly shy woman who can speak Jesus’ words in street ministry shows the world it is God’s power not hers. A man who was chained up in prison, yet teaches countless others about the great freedom of Christ exalts God.
The truth must be handled properly. It is a precious jewel. It is gift to us and in our hands. In verses 14-19 Paul says,
“Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. 19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal:“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
You can’t call yourself sanctified, and spend your time gossiping or starting problems in the Body, then go out and claim the gospel. Your gossip, your lies, and your pettiness spread, and make the precious jewel of the gospel look like cheap glass. If you keep on sinning, what fruit are you bearing? People will not see the power of God then, they will see the power of Satan at work in you, and they will dismiss your testimony and the Gospel with it.
An effective and godly walk is active. Paul refers to believers as workers. Workers don’t sit idly by and hope that good fruit appears. Workers don’t sit and hope that the bricks pile up and form a wall. Workers do the job assigned. Workers do their very best to assure that the product is high quality.
Workers prepare themselves for the work. In a manor like Downton Abbey, Carson the butler doesn’t jump out of bed run down to the dining room in his pajamas to serve breakfast. He washes himself, he puts on the right clothes, and he makes sure that he and the footmen know how to serve the meal.
Paul puts it this way in verses 20-21,
“Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.”
You and I need to be ready as well. We need to keep ourselves ready to work at any time. We must be willing and we must be active. What use are we if we don’t bother washing up and remaining clean so we can serve? We can try and serve without washing and dressing and preparing for the part. But who would take food served from a dirty or smelly butler? Who will accept the truth from a lying gossiping misanthrope? Verses 22-26 exhort us this way,
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”
Believer, are you bearing good fruit? Are you glorifying God through your weakness or exalting Satan through your sin. Will people come to know Jesus because you are prepared and working?
