Genesis 2:4-25 God Created Man as a Distinctive Masterpiece

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 On ultrasound of Lili
Genesis 2:4-25
God created man quite uniquely from the way He created every other living thing on the earth. God said, “Let there be…” and the vegetation sprung forth, and the sea creatures and the birds came to be, and the animals of the earth were brought out of the earth. But for man it was different. For man He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” And then He created us in His own image. (Genesis 1:26-27). But man’s creation was even more special, we were made by God’s word yes, but we were also made by His hand and given life by His breath, His Spirit. Verses 4-7 read,
These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature
God had made the angels by His breath (Psalm33:6) and He gave life to man by that same breath. This breath of life from God Himself gave man the ability to understand, choose, and think. Job 32:8 says it like this,
But it is the spirit in man,
    the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.

The breath of God is the Holy Spirit of God. Remember too that life was and is in Jesus, life came through Him (John 1:3-4). And when we were made in God’s image He gave us a soul by His Spirit. I picture The Son of God breathing His Holy Spirit into man that day. The creation of man was very special. God made man and then He made a place just for him, a place he could care for and enjoy. He made Eden. Verses 8-15 in The Message describes it,
Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man he had just made in it. God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil.
10-14 A river flows out of Eden to water the garden and from there divides into four rivers. The first is named Pishon; it flows through Havilah where there is gold. The gold of this land is good. The land is also known for a sweet-scented resin and the onyx stone. The second river is named Gihon; it flows through the land of Cush. The third river is named Hiddekel and flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 God took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order.
Eden was paradise on earth, it was lush and had nearly everything the man would need and want. It also had two special trees. It had the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. And God gave the man a rule, one simple rule. Verses 16-17 read,
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Why would God do that? Why would He place this tree in the Garden if man couldn’t eat from it? God had given man a soul with the ability to choose, He had given him freewill. What good is freedom if it can’t be exercised? If man could choose to obey or disobey but there was nothing to obey, then would freewill have been much of a gift? The man could choose God, who is all good and His understanding or He could elect to disobey and take the knowledge of good and evil.
Man had nearly everything he could need, but not quite everything. God was about to fix that, but He wanted the man to understand it too. Verses 18-20 read,
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature,  that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

God had already made the animals and He brought each one to Adam to name. In naming them Adam would look to see which of them would be the right companion for Him. God knew none would give Adam everything he required in a mate, but Adam needed to see it too. None of the animals could talk and think the way Adam could, none had been formed by God’s hands in His image.  None could complement who Adam was in the perfect way. So God completed the male by making the female. Verses 21-25 read,
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
God could have formed another man for Adam the same way He had formed Adam. But another man would not have been the perfect complement to Adam, he would have been the same as Adam. Just as Adam’s creation had been distinct, so too was Eve’s. He made her out of man. She was made of the same stuff but formed to be a counterpart, an accompaniment to balance and fulfil Adam. God gave His second command that future generations would leave their parents and hold fast, that is to cling firmly to grasp to their wives so tightly that they would become one united being. Adam and Eve were perfect, innocent, and complete. They were the crown of creation, the reason God made the heavens and the earth and He proclaimed it very good (Genesis 1:31).
God Himself knit you together. You are wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:13-14). You are distinctive from all of Creation as a masterpiece of God. You are not here by accident or happenstance, no matter the circumstances of your conception or birth. God chose to give you life. Praise Him. I for one am really thankful He made you. I’m glad that you are who you are and I thank the Lord right now for you. As you read to or listen to my words we are connected. We are each meeting a need in one another even if for a brief moment and that is a miracle. So thank God for you and the life the Lord gave you.

Romans 5 Born Again to Live Life

and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 2 Timothy 1:10
Romans 5
Believer, you and I have been justified. Have you ever considered what that means? Justified means to be pronounced righteous and approved; to be conformed to an upright standard and to be shown as honorable. We have been found and declared innocent. We have received justice. We were not justified because we deserved it. We were justified because God gave us His grace. He chose to forgive our sin. His forgiveness is not like ours. My forgiveness removes my anger but the sin remains; God’s forgiveness not only takes away His wrath but it eradicates the sin. When He looks at us, our sin no longer exists. That is an amazing gift. It is a gift we could never deserve nor earn. It was given to us because we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ, God with us and we called on Him to save us.
Our justification, our salvation from the wrath of God and the wages or results of sin (which is death) has a purpose. We do not receive a gift as wonderful as life and just let it collect dust. We let God’s proclamation of our righteousness conform us to righteousness. Verses 1-5 read,
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Peace with God is a relationship with Him. We are no longer at odds with Him, working against His desires for us and for the world. We are with Him, living in His will and working with Him for His will. What is His will? It is for our sanctification (being made more and more in Jesus’ image of righteousness) and purity, for all people to be saved, and for us to know Him and love Him. (1 Thessalonians 4:3, 2 Peter 3:9, Hosea 6:6). Faith allows us to trust God and submit to Him and that changes the way we deal with life. Without faith when suffering comes our way, we fight alone to lift ourselves above it or we lament and worry and we look for solutions to end the distress. But with faith in God, we are not alone and we understand that He will change us through the suffering, we will develop the character of Christ. We rejoice for that reason and we rejoice because His love is so apparent. I know when I suffer, one thing that brings me through is faith and the hope that faith gives me. Hebrews 11:1-3 describes it this way,
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
The hope of faith is not a wishy washy hope, it is an absolute certainty, a sure knowledge that God’s promises are true, that eternal life is mine, that my home is in Heaven with Jesus, and His home is here in me.
Christians use a vernacular that the world doesn’t fully understand and sometimes Christians don’t fully understand it either. We say things like born again, saved, and delivered and the lost do not know what we mean. Do we know what we are saved from? We are saved from God’s wrath, the consequences of sin which is death and eternal damnation (Revelation 14:17-20, Revelation 20:15). What are you born again to? You are born to a new identity and eternal life. Isaiah 62:1-5 describes it beautifully,

For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,
    and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet,
until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
    and her salvation as a burning torch.
2 The nations shall see your righteousness,
    and all the kings your glory,
and you shall be called by a new name
    that the mouth of the Lord will give.
3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
    and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a young woman,
    so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
    so shall your God rejoice over you.

Eternal life is not only for the future, it is for now! We are not called Forsaken anymore; we are called Righteous, we are called My Delight is in Her! God’s delight is in us, consider that; God’s delight is in you, believer, you! You are no longer condemned to death. You have been given life, peace with God so much so that His delight is in you. Seeing you live makes God happy. Verses 6-11 read,
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Once you were God’s enemy, sure to experience His wrath but now you are alive in a relationship with God who loves you more profoundly than you can begin to fathom. It is Jesus’ sacrifice which freely and generously gave us life and reconciliation with Him. We can’t let that gift sit unused and unappreciated. Death exists in the world. It is rampant. But the gift of life is waiting for anyone willing to accept it. Verses 12-19 in The Message read,
12-14 You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in—first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to Moses. So death, this huge abyss separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses. Even those who didn’t sin precisely as Adam did by disobeying a specific command of God still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. But Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it.
15-17 Yet the rescuing gift is not exactly parallel to the death-dealing sin. If one man’s sin put crowds of people at the dead-end abyss of separation from God, just think what God’s gift poured through one man, Jesus Christ, will do! There’s no comparison between that death-dealing sin and this generous, life-giving gift. The verdict on that one sin was the death sentence; the verdict on the many sins that followed was this wonderful life sentence. If death got the upper hand through one man’s wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides?
18-19 Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right. (Or read it in the ESV here).
Adam’s sin brought death to the masses. Everyone was born with sin instilled in them after that and so everyone was born dead. But Jesus willingly gave up His life. He died and that brought life to anyone who will believe He is the Christ and that He died and resurrected. He took our death sentence from us by laying down His life. He took on our crimes, our sin and in doing so made us innocent as if we have never been sinners. When we chose to believe God, we were born again, but this time we were born to life and so we were born to live. What should that mean for us? Should we just sit on a swing and think happy thoughts about how good it is to be alive and how nice it will be in New Jerusalem (where we will spend eternity united with God after Judgement Day)? No! We are meant to live and by doing so let others know this wonderful gift is for them too. We are meant to live and snatch people away from the death that grips them. Verses 20-21 read,
Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
God is waiting. He wants to pour His grace and love out on everyone. He wants everyone to have eternal life, know Him, and be justified. Isaiah 30:18-19 says,
Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you,
    and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
    blessed are all those who wait for him.

19 For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you.
Let your life glorify God (reflect God and make Him known). Shine life to the people living in the darkness of death. Bring them to peace with Him though the gospel of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:14-15 encourages us to live that way.
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Joel 3 Why will God Judge the Nations?

11/15/2015

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. Revelation 19:11
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. Revelation 19:11-16
Joel 3
We are in the end times. The signs are all around us. Since the day Jesus ascended to Heaven and gave us His Holy Spirit, we have begun preparing for His Return, for the Day of The LORD. It is becoming clearer and clearer that the world is getting closer to that Terrific Day. Why will The Lord take His retribution? Why will He judge the nations? Because He is a God of Love and He will not let His people, His children be attacked, hurt, and enslaved forever. He is Love and so He is our Justice and our vengeance. Verses 1-8 describe the crimes against God’s people.
“For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, 2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there, on behalf of my people and my heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations and have divided up my land, 3 and have cast lots for my people, and have traded a boy for a prostitute, and have sold a girl for wine and have drunk it.
4 “What are you to me, O Tyre and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, I will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily.5 For you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples. 6 You have sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border. 7 Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you have sold them, and I will return your payment on your own head. 8 I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, to a nation far away, for the Lord has spoken.”
People either war against God or are at peace with Him, there is no other choice, there is no middle ground. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as savior, you are at war with God. Romans 5:9-11 says it this way,
“Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
 In verses 9-12 Joel tells those enemies of the Lord to prepare for the battle on the Day of The LORD.
“Proclaim this among the nations:
Consecrate for war;
    stir up the mighty men.
Let all the men of war draw near;
    let them come up.
10 Beat your plowshares into swords,
    and your pruning hooks into spears;
    let the weak say, “I am a warrior.”

11 Hasten and come,
    all you surrounding nations,
    and gather yourselves there.
Bring down your warriors, O Lord.
12 Let the nations stir themselves up
    and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
for there I will sit to judge
    all the surrounding nations.”

As believers we have something else to look forward to. We’ve been fighting the enemy all along. And after that Day when everyone is judged we will no longer have to fight. Jesus, our Righteousness and Justice is our Peace and war will no longer be necessary. Isaiah 2:4 says,
“He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall decide disputes for many peoples;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war anymore.”

The lost have been living it up getting a much pleasure and money in this temporary life, proclaiming YOLO as excuse for hedonism. That Day will come as a surprise to them and they will suddenly be faced with a war bigger than they can fathom. They will take the tools they used to get rich and indulge themselves and try and fight and they will die. But believers have been prepared, we’ve been fighting a war since we were re-born as God’s sons and daughters. We will take those weapons of prayer, the Sword of the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit, and fellowship with God and we will use them to live well with Him in eternity.
The signs are clear. Even for the person who has never read the Bible it is obvious that the world is decaying faster and faster. Yes, we have always had wars and terrible ones, worse than we now fight. Yes, we have had evil throughout the ages. But now the world is one where evil is promulgated faster than even news reporters can tell it. It propagates quickly and it affects the entire world, not only a community, a city, or a nation. These tragedies we see so very often, the Holocaust, 9/11, Boston Marathon, Paris, and the many others that come to mind, though perpetrated by evil men are calling people to repentance and reconciliation with God. The natural disasters the earthquakes, tsunamis, and super storms are crying out to lead people to God. Are people paying attention? Verses 13-16 read,
“Put in the sickle,
    for the harvest is ripe.
Go in, tread,
    for the winepress is full.
The vats overflow,
    for their evil is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes,
    in the valley of decision!
For the day of the Lord is near
    in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and the moon are darkened,
    and the stars withdraw their shining.

16 The Lord roars from Zion,
    and utters his voice from Jerusalem,
    and the heavens and the earth quake.
But the Lord is a refuge to his people,
    a stronghold to the people of Israel.”

Will people seek the refuge of The Lord? It is not just a haven for now, but a peace for eternity. Verses 17-21 read,
“So you shall know that I am the Lord your God,
    who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain.
And Jerusalem shall be holy,
    and strangers shall never again pass through it.

18 “And in that day
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
    and the hills shall flow with milk,
and all the streambeds of Judah
    shall flow with water;
and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord
    and water the Valley of Shittim.

19 “Egypt shall become a desolation
    and Edom a desolate wilderness,
for the violence done to the people of Judah,
    because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah shall be inhabited forever,
    and Jerusalem to all generations.
21 I will avenge their blood,
    blood I have not avenged,
    for the Lord dwells in Zion.”

Why will God release His wrath? Because He loves us. He adores us! He will not let this evil continue forever. One Day soon He will come riding triumphantly leading the angel armies. (Revelation 19:11-16). One Day soon He will come judge the nations and take His children home.

1 Timothy 6 The Road to Hell is Paved with Discontentment

11/7/2015

0 Comments

1 Timothy 6[i]
Are you content? In today’s culture, contentment is sometimes looked down on and synonymous with laziness. The world tells us we shouldn’t be content. We should always want more and better. So what is contentment?
The words content and contentment come from the Greek words arkeo, which means “to be satisfied; to be strong,” and autarkeia, which means “to need no aid or support; sufficiency of the necessities of life.” This concept is a foreign one to Americans who are taught that success is in plenty, that more is better, and that if we sit back satisfied with what we have we are not living to our fullest potential. The American Dream is a dream of wealth and stuff to enjoy that wealth.
But 1 Timothy chapter 6 says if we have food and clothes, then should be content. It is discontent that often leads to numerous problems. People who are not satisfied with what they have are the people stirring up trouble in the church. Their haughtiness delights in dissension. Paul calls this kind of thinking and teaching depraved. Discord is not the teaching of Jesus Christ. His command is to love one another. We teach the gospel, our salvation through Jesus Christ. We teach the whole gospel, Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection and nothing more than the whole gospel.
Verses 3-6 read,
“If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain”
People who are not content see the faith as a road to prosperity. That is a road of grave danger. Verses 9-10 read,
“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
Paul warns Timothy not to give in to seeking wealth, worldly success and worldly treasures but instead to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. (Verse 11). He compares this pursuit of godliness instead of wealth to a fight. It is an active battle to remain in pursuit of God’s Kingdom rather than our own desires. What are we fighting for? We are fighting for the gospel to remain pure. We are fighting for the faith of Jesus Christ. Paul puts it this way, in verses 12-14,
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, 14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
Putting faith in money means your faith is not in God. God is able to be trusted. Can you really trust money and possessions? They are temporary. You may be wealthy today and bankrupt tomorrow. Like other idols, money can only do what we make it do, and we are flawed. Stock Markets crash, Businesses fail. Identities get stolen. Banks get robbed. But God is faithful. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Jesus Christ our God is Sovereign, Eternal, and Good.
Paul says it beautifully in verses 17-19,
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”

1 Timothy 2:8-15 Your Worship of the Lord Makes You Beautiful

11/1/2015

1 Timothy 2:8-15
When you picture worship and fellowship with The Lord, what is the posture you imagine? Is it praying on your knees? Is it laying prostrate arms outstretched as you speak and listen to Him? Is it dancing and singing songs of praise to Him? Or perhaps like me it is standing with arms raised as I pray, sing, or praise. Whichever position and attitude you picture it is beautiful to God. It communicates submission, acquiescence, and veneration to Him.
In those times, we are not exalting ourselves. We are not concerned with how we look to the world, we are with God, blessing Him, and receiving what He has for us. And when people see it, they may think we look off-balance or silly, but they also see a testimony to the Love of Jesus. They see God’s relationship with us in its purest form. And they see the joy of being with Him. Verses 8-10 read,
“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”
That worship posture, which by the way also includes church unity and peace, is expressed in the confidence of humility. We don’t have to “dress to impress” when we live lives of worship and faith. It is not a tiara, diamonds, make-up, or a little black dress that makes a woman more attractive, it is good works. It is not a low cut blouse and a push-up bra that invite people to want to know more about a woman and why she exudes that special something, it is her faith and tangible love of others. It is the same for a man, it is not the leather jacket, tuxedo, or perfectly coiffed hair that makes someone want to ask “what is it about him?” It is His faith and the exercising of it.
You are already beautiful! Really! You don’t need the fancy clothes, jewelry, or skin cream. You were created in the image of God. Could you get any more beautiful than that? Genesis 1:26-27 says,
“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
    male and female he created them.”

Even the angels think you are beautiful! (Genesis 6:2). What do we care what men and women think, when the angels and God think we are beautiful? God, Himself considers you beautiful! Psalm 45:11 says,
“and the king will desire your beauty.
Since he is your lord, bow to him.”

God desires your beauty and it is best exhibited by your worship of Him. Would you rather a construction worker or a cougar desire you than The Lord God of Heaven and Earth? If you are beautiful to God, don’t you know how beautiful you are to men and women of God?
Men and women reveal their beauty differently. Men by their prayer and spiritual loving leadership and women by their humility and quiet grace. Paul continues his exhortations for women to live godly lives and so be beautiful attracting people to Jesus and pleasing The Lord. Verses 11-15 read,
“Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”
He understands that women have more of a tendency toward the vanity of sexual splendor than men do. This is because men improperly exhibit their beauty through aggressive power and lust for women, making women want to please men sexually. Women then control men through sexual manipulation.
Most of the time when a woman has a child, it changes her point of view from herself to her child. That brings her closer to an ability to understand the love of her Father in Heaven.
Believer, you are beautiful to God! When you live a life of faith, love, and holiness you are exquisite in the sight of God and men. Your posture of worship is beautiful, it is the core of your relationship with God and a testimony to the world. Your submission to God makes you impeccably beautiful.

Jeremiah 29:11-14 on Photo of Trees at Sunset by Donna Campbell
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. Jeremiah 29:11-14
The DecapolisMap of the Decapolis

I was reading this morning in Mark 5 verses 1-20 about Jesus freeing the man from the demon called Legion.
Verses 1-6 describe the state of the man before he met Jesus.
“They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.”
It is not the man who speaks to Jesus, but the demon who recognizes Jesus, calls Him Son of the Most High God, and begs Him not to torment him. He then begs him not to send him out of the country but to send him into a herd of 2 thousand pigs. The demon was one demon but many and Jesus gave him permission to enter the pigs, which went over a cliff and drowned in the sea below. Verses 14-17 tell us what happened next.
“The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.”
The change in the man was so big that the people were afraid. Jesus power and authority was obvious. These were not Jewish people. They may have heard of Jesus and they may not have, but they didn’t know God or anything much about Him. Perhaps the fact that a herd of two thousand pigs had just run over a cliff and died carrying with them a huge amount of money scared them about losing any more money to this Jesus. But whatever the case, they wanted to stay in their sin and begged Jesus to leave.
There was a lot of begging, first the demon, then the people of Gerasenes. And Jesus gave them what they begged for. Verses 18-20 continue the narrative.
“As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.”
I’ve been a Christian since 1977. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve read this. But this morning The Lord revealed something to me I had never caught before.
After the man has been healed, he begged Jesus to allow him to go with Him. This seems like something that would be God's will. Let me follow you, learn from you tell people everywhere that you are Messiah! Yet, Jesus told the man no. He said, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
I can try to imagine, that I would be really disappointed, and knowing me I would wonder why I wasn't good enough to be one of his close followers. But this guy went home and he did what Jesus told him to do. He proclaimed what Jesus had done in the Decapolis, which was ten Greco-Roman cities located in Eastern Palestine.

 That was God's will and I would venture to say that He brought many people to the knowledge that Jesus is the son of God. He followed God's will over his own will and God used him. The people in that area knew him as the demon possessed man that couldn't even be restrained with chains, who lived in the tombs and was crazy. They could see the change in Him after his encounter with Christ. His proclamations of God's mercy to him probably changed the lives of many people. If God had given the man what he begged for, I believe the only life changed may have been his. He would certainly not have had the huge impact on his home region.
Making Jesus our Lord means giving up our will for His, giving Him the right to be the Master of our lives. In Luke 9:23-25 Jesus says,
“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”
What is it, you have begged for and The Lord has said no to? Have you considered that God has something better for you? Have you considered He has great plans for you? Isaiah 55:8-11 reads,
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

We can be so disappointed sometimes when we do not get what we want, even when that thing seems to be something God would want. But trust Him. He knows what He made you to accomplish. He knows your gifts. He knows how to bring you to a place of strength and power in Him.
Jeremiah 29:11-14 says,
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.”
Go ahead and ask the Lord for what you want, but don’t give in to despair if He says no. His no is only a yes to something better and greater.

Cowardice is a Sin

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
Did you know that the Bible lists cowardice in the same category as murder, sexual immorality, and sorcery?
Revelation 21:8 reads,
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."
Wow! Fear is as bad as killing? How is that? I know that fear stops you from trying, which stops you from accomplishing. Fear keeps you from enjoying life. Fear stands between you and the gift on the other side of the fear. I know this from personal experience.
Years ago, I was afraid of everything a person could be afraid of. I could not enjoy life because I was only able to watch from the sidelines. One day, God told me to go on a mission trip to The Amazon Jungle of all places. Could any place have so many things I was afraid of all together in one place? That trip changed my life. Every day of that trip I had to do things that scared me like climb ladders, step over a gap, climb steep hills, and deal with bugs. As our trip neared its end, we were enjoying a day of sightseeing.  We were visiting a shop right on the river.  There was a tall rickety old bridge leading back from that shop into the jungle. People were walking along the bridge and I was afraid to cross it. I wanted to do it but I couldn’t make myself move, so I settled for waiting for the others to return. Well one man, decided I was not going to miss and it sternly encouraged me to take the walk along the bridge with him to join the rest of the group. He told me my fear was based on imagination and not reality. I took a deep breath and walked along that rickety old bridge, and there around me were beautiful towering trees and a plethora of birds I had never seen. A monkey moved along the tree tops above us. At the end of the bridge was a lovely little lagoon type of area with giant lily pads, gorgeous flowers, and caiman swimming through the dark water. It was breathtaking! I stood there and marveled at the God’s creation. No description of it could ever have done it justice. I would have missed out on that blessing had I given in to the fear. I would have missed out on the entire trip had I let fear stop me. Before that trip I was afraid of EVERYTHING. After that trip, fear couldn’t stop me from anything.
Fear is not from God. Fear keeps us from doing God’s will, enjoying His gifts and experiencing His fullness.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 reads,
 “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
We have The Holy Spirit! That Spirit is powerful, we have love, and we have self-control. Some versions of the Bible read sound mind rather than self-control. Fear is the antithesis of power, love and sound mind or self-control. Fear is a timid, loveless, and turbulent mind. We have nothing to fear! Fear is part of a life without God. God loves us, He holds in His arms, Our Papa.
Romans 8:15 says,
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"
Do you remember when you were little; you knew if Daddy was there, all was right with the world. He told the monsters under the bed to get out. He held you when you were scared. And when he held you there was nothing in the entire universe that could hurt you. Your Abba, your Father in Heaven is holding you tightly in his arms. Nothing can take you out of His mighty hands. John 10:28-29 reads,
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”
He will not let anyone hurt you. He will not let the enemy touch you! The enemy will taunt you, he will threaten, he will lies to you but he can’t touch you. You are safe in your Daddy’s arms!
1 John 5:18 says,
“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”
What is fear keeping you from doing? What is it you are afraid of happening? Change? Death? Maiming? Is any of that a real fear? Are you imagining what will happen if things go wrong? That is worrying. That’s not reality. Where are those thoughts originating? Those are not from God! Remember God didn’t give you a Spirit of fear. Remember the enemy wants you to fear. The Bible tells us not to worry.
Philippians 4:4-7 reminds us,
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
He didn’t promise nothing bad things would not happen to us but He did promise to be with us regardless (Hebrews 13:5). He promised that everything works for good to those that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t spend your time imagining “what if”. If you fear something remember the enemy doesn’t want you to live a victorious life and he wants you to be afraid. That’s probably a good reason to overcome your fear and do whatever it is, the enemy doesn’t want you to do.
Before He went home, in John 14:27 Jesus said:
 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Don’t ignore that gift. I challenge you today; Do the thing you fear. Do it now. Let the enemy know he can’t touch you. Do what you are afraid to do and accomplish what it is you are afraid of doing. See what wonderful thing God has in store for you and for your world.

Adoption: What it Means for Believers

1 Peter 1:3-5 on photo by Donna Campbell
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5
I know that we just did a devotional dedicated to being sons and daughters of God, but I was going through my friend’s Facebook notes and wanted to share this from my dear friend, author Andrea Barringer.[1] (Bible Verses are added to the note by me).
Adoption
This morning I was thinking about adoption. It's something that has been on my heart since I was a child. It's not the kid's fault that they were born into a situation where their original parents couldn't support them due to any number of circumstances. Why should the child suffer the consequences? Don't they disserve love as well? Thankfully, Jim also supports the idea of adoption and it may be something we do later on in life when our daughter is in college.

That idea made me start thinking. If I adopt that means every blessing that I bestow on my own child/children has to be the same for my adoptive child. For example, if Jim and I have a will in which we would leave our earthly possessions to our daughter we would also have to include our adoptive child into that will. If you didn't do that, it would show that perhaps you didn't truly treat them like your own child. Likewise, you wouldn't introduce your adoptive child as "This is _____ my adopted kid".  You would introduce them as "This is my child, ______".

When you adopt you are saying with your heart, soul and mind that the child is yours. Fully yours. And just as when you wish to adopt a child the child also has to accept the offer. You can't storm into a place and say to a kid "I'm adopting you whether you like it or not". That wouldn't be very loving, now would it?

This may all sound like commonsense.

Of course all of this made me think of the FACT that I have been adopted into God's family. Galatians 4:1-5 says,
“I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
God paid the price of adoption and truly accepts me as one of His own. My name is written in the book of life (that will). With my name being on that book of life I am granted eternal life with Him in heaven. (Luke 10:20, Revelation 20:15). I get His love, grace, mercy, etc. But as I said earlier, with every adoption the kid has to make a decision, whether to accept it or not.

God offers salvation and a true relationship with Him as our heavenly Father, but we have to accept it. If not, we just don't get those gifts. We don't get to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  John 1:9-13 reads.
“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

And, as with most huge families there WILL be a huge family reunion. If you have lost someone recently like a child, parent, spouse, or grandparent I know you are hurting. But just as when we buy our plane ticket to go to a much anticipated epic family reunion we will get to do the same once we are in heaven as long as those loved ones were adopted into God's family. We WILL get that epic family reunion in heaven. There are a lot of people that I miss, mainly my Abuela (grandma). I know I'll see her again, for she too, was adopted into God's family.

It's comforting to know that God's love for us is real. It's wide. It knows no depths. I am thankful for His love for me.

Garments covered in menses blood or washed clean by the blood of Jesus

10/20/2015

We cannot be righteous without Jesus. We can never be good enough for God without His saving grace.
Isaiah 64:4-7 reads,
“From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.
5 You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
6 We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
    and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.”

Isaiah says God meets him who works righteousness and remember Him in their ways. Under the Old Covenant when people worshipped and sacrificed as The Lord has prescribed, there was peace between them and God. When they had faith in Him there was peace between them. The people sought God through works, but their works were empty without faith. The Lord is happy over good works, yet they are worthless to Him. Verse 6 says, our good works are like a polluted garment. The Hebrew word for polluted is עִדִּים, ed. It means the garments are stained with menstrual blood. The Israelites understood that women were unclean during their menses and that anything touched by menses was untouchable or else the person who touched it became unclean as well.
Good works apart from Jesus do not lead people to Jesus. But when we glorify The Lord through all our deeds, we become a testimony to Jesus. (Hebrews 13:20-21).
We can do countless good works but they mean nothing if we are not doing them in Jesus’ name. Good works cannot save us. Titus 3:4-7 says it this way,
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
We can do amazing great works, prophesy, cast out demons, and even save countless lives but those works do not save us. (Matthew 7:21-23, 1 Corinthians 13:1-3). If we count on good works to save us or earn us favor with God, we may as well be wearing robes covered in menses. But if we call on Jesus, He covers us with His blood gives us and gives us His righteousness. Our filthy robes are washed in Jesus blood. (Revelation 22:14). We are no longer clothed in menses covered filth and sin but in Jesus’ righteousness.  Isaiah 1:15-18 reads,
“When you spread out your hands,
    I will hide my eyes from you;
even though you make many prayers,
    I will not listen;
    your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
    remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
cease to do evil,
17     learn to do good;
seek justice,
    correct oppression;
bring justice to the fatherless,
    plead the widow's cause.

18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
    they shall become like wool.”

Pilate tried washing the blood from his hands to remove his guilt, but only Jesus can take our guilt away. We can do good deed after good deed to try and erase our sin or balance our “karma” but it will do no good. 1 John 1:8-9 says,
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Good works are good if they are done with the right motive. God does after all meet him who joyfully works righteousness. (Isaiah 64:5). Colossians 1:10-12 says,
“so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”
We are not saved by good works but faith. We do good works because we are saved. Ephesians 2:4-10 reads,
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Our good works apart from Jesus may as well be menses covered rags. So Believer, do good works, but do them in Jesus name and for His glory. Do them because they are the natural outpouring of the Spirit and a result of your transformation.

The Beatitudes: Kingdom Perspective Versus Worldly Wisdom

10/18/2015

0 Comments

Everyone loves the Beatitudes of Matthew 5:1-12, because they're very practical and down-to-earth teaching about the attitudes and behaviors that every Christian should be trying to live out.  Imagine the difficult task that Jesus faced, coming down out of heaven, from a Trinity that enjoys perfect love and community within itself, from a place where everyone finds their own glory in glorifying God, and coming into a world that is so backward, so broken.  The Beatitudes are his attempt to illustrate the differences between his way of thinking and our way of thinking.

Jesus says: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
The world says: "Blessed are the rich in material wealth, because they pull all the strings and have all the nice things."

Jesus says: "Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted."
The world says: "Blessed are those who put on a stiff upper lip and pretend they aren't hurting, because vulnerability is weakness."

Jesus says: "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."
The world says: "Blessed are the aggressive, because nice guys finish last."

Jesus says: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be satisfied."
The world says: "Blessed are those who have low expectations, because they will never be disappointed."

Jesus says: "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy."
The world says: "Blessed are the merciless, for they will become CEOs."

Jesus says: "Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God."
The world says: "Blessed are the people who only care about morality when it's convenient, because they will have a much easier life."

Jesus says: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God."
The world says: "Blessed are the winners, because everyone who's not a winner is a loser."

Jesus says: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
The world says: "Blessed are those who don't take a hard stand for anything, because persecution isn't fun or easy."

Jesus says: "Blessed are you when others revile you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."
The world says: "Blessed are the tolerant and politically correct, because they're way more open-minded and progressive than those miserable moralistic Christians."

You can perhaps see why living a truly counter-cultural Christianity is so difficult: it flies directly opposite to the conventional wisdom of our society and our age.  Living by Jesus' standards and attitudes instead of the world's will cost you something.  It will cost you income and promotions if you prioritize your family instead of work.  It will cost you opportunities if you insist on behaving ethically when you could make a quick buck by cheating.  It will cost you the lifestyle you dream of when you realize there are better things for you to spend your money on than nice things for yourself.  It may even cost you friends who don't share your willingness to be "persecuted for righteousness' sake."

Are you living the world's attitudes, or Jesus' attitudes?
