One of the best ways to praise the Lord is to attribute to Him, His titles and works. By doing so we remember all He has done for us, we glorify Him by testifying to the everyone how great He is. Verses 1-2read,
“Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.”
The words heavenly beings in this verse does not refer only to angels the word is actually benei which translates sons or descendants. We praise God by crediting Him with who He is. He is glorious and strong. He is our glory and our strength. He is worthy of these praises and our worship because He is holy and all the good things like faith, hope, and love come from Him.
He is our Almighty Creator. He created the heavens and the earth and everything in it. Verses 3-9 read,
“The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
It is with His voice, His word that His will is achieved. He spoke the heavens, earth, animals, plants, and people into being. So everything is His. He has authority over all of creation. It is His sea, His forest, and His animals. Even the weather obeys Him. The thunder and lightning are His. Calamities such as earthquakes and hurricanes must answer to Him.
We, The Lord’s sons and daughters do not have to fear the weather, nature, or animals because our Father rules over them. He sends them with purposes and He cares for us throughout. He is our King, the King of the entire universe from galaxies to atoms, it is all in His control. What do we have to fear? Verses 10-11 read,
“The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!”
All God’s names, Lord of Peace, Almighty, and King of kings, Lord our healer, and the others are all gifts He gives us, His traits given to us, or accounts of what He has done. In His name as His children we act in the way God would have us act. We are people who can bring the peace of God to the lost, who can demonstrate the strength of the Lord to the weak, and who can be the love of God to the world. Nothing can move Him from His place of sovereignty.
How wonderful it is to praise Him by recounting all He has done for us. It is lovely to repeat to the lost and the saved all of His mighty deeds! Our Savior. Our Healer. Our Father. Our Bridegroom. Our Comforter. Our Peace.
