Abundance in Relationship with Jesus

Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” Hosea 6:3 on a photo by Donna Campbell
Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” Hosea 6:3
Today, I want to continue looking at what it means to live an abundant life. Yesterday, we looked at the awesome grace of Jesus Christ. That grace gives us a beautiful freedom from slavery to sin and law which is the same thing. We can say this because without law, there is no sin although there is still death (Romans 4:15). Today, we will expound a bit on abundant life. I would venture to say that most lost people would consider that they are free to do anything while the Christian is forced to live a narrow and restricted life. I say the opposite is true; True Christianity broadens one’s life and opens the Believer to unimaginable possibilities and experiences in her life simply because she is now in a relationship with Jesus.
Many non-believers and too many people who claim Christianity believe this verse, “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard” taken out of context. Who would want to walk that way? But Beloved, that is not the whole verse, it is not the entire thought. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus said,
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
The road may be narrow, but the journey is rich and the destination is more than we could ever fathom. The wider road is crowded, the journey is about trying to obtain prosperity, sumptuousness of sensation, and fulfilled desires. It is a selfish and self-centered road that too many people take. Even those who think they are living a selfless life, if they took a real look at the “love” they show and the things they do in service to others would see that they are trying to fill a hole, be ‘good,’ feel good or bring glory to themselves. Even a believer can often start living a life of trying to be good instead of a life of following Christ. They find themselves on that wide road and the only thing keeping them from the destruction at the end is His Love and Mercy, Jesus let them find destruction before sending them onto the Salvation and eternal life they could have been living since the moment they called on His name to be saved.
The way is not hard as in difficult to live. The original Greek words are translated to strait (not straight) and narrow. Strait comes from the Greek word stenos which means narrow because of obstacles. Those obstacles include things such as seeking sensual experiences, wealth, and virtue. These are the lies that keep people from Jesus.
Narrow is translated from the Greek word qlibw (pronounced thleebow) which means pressed like grapes. It gives more of a picture of difficult to get through, sort of that picture of the camel going through the eye of a needle (Mark 10:25). It gives me the image of grapes being pressed into wine.  A camel cannot go through the eye of a needle. It can only enter because Jesus makes it possible.
The only way through that strait and narrow gate that leads to life is Jesus Christ. Remember from yesterday’s reading in John 10, Jesus described Himself as the gate. And in John 14:6 Jesus proclaims, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus is not only the door, but He is the Way to the door, He is the truth that gives us freedom on the way to the destination of life, and He is the Life both the destination and the gift. He is All in All. And in His awesome Grace, He did all the work for us in this gift of life we have received from Him. Let’s look back at John 10 again now so we can find out more about living life abundantly. Verses 7-18 read,
 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
In verses 14-15, Jesus says, “I Am the Good Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.” These two verses are profoundly full of meaning. And this is where I want to spend some time today learning about that abundance of life we are given. How was that life given to us? Jesus gave it to us of His own will. It was the will of the Father and so it was His will as well. He chose it, He bought us with a precious price to call us His own (1 Corinthians 6:20). When Jesus gave us His name in verse 14, He gave it in the same way that God did throughout the Bible, He started it with His most Holy and encompassing name, I Am. He is. He is God, He is The LORD. He is The LORD our Good Shepherd. And while we will look at being God’s own and Jesus as the Good Shepherd another day, today we will look at the great benefit of God knowing us and our knowing Him.
What is it to be known by God? Just think about that? He knows us. Do you need me to tell you just how wonderful and beautiful that is? He knows you! He not just is aware of us, the way we are aware of a co-worker, neighbor, or acquaintance, He knows us. He completely and absolutely recognizes, identifies, discerns, appreciates, and understands us. To me, that is astounding. Out of all the 7.8 billion people, that is 7800000000 people on this earth, if you are His own, He knows you personally, and above that He really loves you!
Not only does He know us, but we can know Him too! And because of this mutual knowing, we hear His voice and know His voice! We have a relationship with the LORD! Talking with God is one of the greatest things I know, not just talking to Him, which is special enough, but listening to Him talk to me. I can remember years ago wondering how people could hear God speak. I swore I couldn’t hear Him. Just about every person I asked, replied the same way. They said His voice was quiet and small. I wondered how they could differentiate God’s voice from their own thoughts. How do I know if that thought is God speaking or me wishing? Well, this is one of the ways that God’s knowing you is particularly important. God knows how you hear Him best and how you understand Him best. He knows if you will be listening closer while you walk in nature, submerge yourself in water, close yourself into a prayer closet, immerse yourself in music, kneel, or drive your car. He knows if you will understand Him more through verbal language, picture language or symbols.
But looking back at the passage from John 10 helps us find the answer to this question about recognizing Jesus’ voice. Verse 16 says, “they will listen to my voice.” How could I possibly ever hope to recognize a voice I’m not listening to? The more I know Jesus the more I will understand the way He conveys messages to me. What wording does He use, what expression and point of view? Does the message merge with the Bible? The more I listen the more I will recognize that voice and differentiate it from my own, from influences around me, and from the accuser of the brethren. Just like a newborn baby recognizes her mother’s voice because she has spent 40 weeks listening to her, we recognize Jesus ’voice because we have been in Him and He and His Spirit in us.  Nearly all newborns will turn their heads towards their mothers when they speak. When the main caretaker is not the birth mother, the infant will soon turn her head toward the main caretaker be it a father, adoptive parent, or other because she has bonded and developed a complete trust in that one person. Believer, we too will recognize Jesus’ voice because we have chosen to listen to Him, trust Him, and obey Him. We have a relationship with Him. Hosea 6:1-6 tells us,
Come, let us return to the Lord;
    for he has torn us, that he may heal us;
    he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
2 After two days he will revive us;
    on the third day he will raise us up,
    that we may live before him.
3 Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord;
    his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us as the showers,
    as the spring rains that water the earth.”

4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?
    What shall I do with you, O Judah?
Your love is like a morning cloud,
    like the dew that goes early away.
5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
    I have slain them by the words of my mouth,
    and my judgment goes forth as the light.
6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
    the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Verse 1 doesn’t refer to God punishing us, it refers to Him removing the obstacles that keep us from experiencing and having all He wants for us. We can see that in verse 2, when we read it with a New Covenant perspective. We have been resurrected with Jesus to new life (Colossians2:12). While He has done all the work of giving us this relationship, our part is to want it to press onto know the Lord and He will come to us just as the spring rains water the earth. We choose to know God and He comes to us and He even nourishes the relationship. He does all the work, because He is merciful, and His Grace knows no boundaries. Even though our love is fleeting, His love is not. Even though He is so powerful that His very words could judge us, that is not what God wants for us. He wants our fleeting love to grow into the steadfast love and intimate knowledge of relationship.
That relationship God makes with us is such a wonderful and joyful thing. And what about all the longings we have as humans? The excuse that people us to say they don’t want the “straight and narrow.” Psalm 37:4 reads,
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

When we delight or as this word awnug means to luxuriate ourselves in the Lord, then He gives us the desires of our hearts! Are those desires different than the ones that kept us from Jesus before? They probably are, or at least they have changed into a new yearning. If we are luxuriating or reveling in the Lord, our heart is, like David going to be a heart after God’s heart. God wants good things for us. He has good plans for us. Jeremiah 29:10b-14a reads,
I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations
God is so good, He gives us good gifts. He gives us the desires of our hearts and since He knows us so well, He knows what it is we want! But He also listens to us and gives what we ask for. Anything we ask for in Jesus’ name, He gives us (John 14:13).
The life He has given us is rich and full and it gets better and better. This is just one part the abundant life He has given us. Yet even if a relationship with God was the one and only part, it would be more than any of us could ever have known without Him.
Stay with us as we continue this series about living life abundantly. Be blessed, Beloved!

Psalm 119:33-40 To Know God is to Know Joy

1 John 1:2-4
the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 1 John 1:2-4
Psalm 119:33-40

I’m not sure the world understands the joy we as Christ followers take in God’s Word. I can say for me personally, I enjoy reading the Bible, I love to hear God speak to me, and I delight in new revelations from His Word. It is wonderful to hear from The Lord and understand His will. There is an intimacy as He speaks to the heart and mind as we read and listen. That relationship becomes even deeper when we not only hear Him, but we obey Him. Verses 33-35 read,

“Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
    and I will keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.
35 Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I delight in it.”

It does us no good to read the Scriptures and ignore them. Pursuit of God begins with hearing and reading His Word and is furthered by accepting, comprehending, interpreting, appreciating and obeying. To observe or perceive, discern, and heed the law of God with our whole heart requires that we do more than just read, we internalize and follow it. It is not complicated, it is not memorizing and heartlessly and mindlessly obeying 613 impossible laws. God doesn’t want ritual from us, He wants our commitment to a relationship with Him. (Hosea 6:6). Jesus told us following Him wasn’t what the Pharisees and Sadducees were making it out to be. Matthew 11:25-30 reads,

“At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Dedication to Jesus and following Him is wonderful. It is so wonderful that some begin following Him and then become selfish for the personal benefits. They make money off of Him, they become celebrated in the world, or they get drunk from the awesome power. Even in the early church some people said they followed Jesus but they were really eager for the advantages of The Holy Spirit. You can read about one such person, Simon the Magician in Acts 8:9-24. Verses 36-37 of the Psalm say it this way,

“Incline my heart to your testimonies,
    and not to selfish gain!
37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
    and give me life in your ways.”

When we start following Holy Spirit power instead of The Holy Spirit, money instead of the Kingdom of Heaven, or fame instead of Jesus we are no longer pursuing God, we are pursuing idolatry and it leads to sin, stagnation, and even death. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 reads,

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”

It is not the advantages that cause us to long for God like a parched man in the desert longs for water, it is His goodness, love, and friendship that causes us to yearn for more of Him. And He wants us to pursue Him and know Him. Jeremiah 29:11-14 reads,

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.”

God is not Santa Claus. He is not some gentle grandfather, or like Hollywood’s renditions of Him. He is not George Burns or Morgan Freeman. He is Sovereign Almighty Creator of Heaven and Earth. When we know the real Him, the God whose glory is so intense that the smallest glimpse of Him caused Moses face to shine and scared the Israelites so that he had to put a veil over his face, we are awed, humbled, and deeply respectful. (Exodus 33:17-23, Exodus 34:29-34). He is fierce. His love is powerful. He is The LORD, I Am. (Isaiah 42:8). Verses 38-40 read,

“Confirm to your servant your promise,
    that you may be feared.
39 Turn away the reproach that I dread,
    for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I long for your precepts;
    in your righteousness give me life!”

It is wonderful, delightful, terrific, and magnificent to know God, to continue knowing Him more and more is a beautiful gift and the apex of eternal life. If we want to know God, we must read, listen to, and heed His Word. If we want to be in a relationship with Him we have to pursue friendship and spend time communing with Him. 1 John 1:2-4 says it this way,

“the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 We are not Alone in Striving for Jesus’ Glory

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 On Photo of Aunt Sarah’s Rose Bush by Donna Campbell
2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

What is our purpose as Christians? What is it we strive for? Ultimately what we strive for on this earth, is what will be gifted to us in eternity, the perfection of the image of Christ. One day we will be made complete in Jesus, wholly holy, no sin, no flaws, and no shortcomings. We hope and do our utmost to glorify Christ, our Lord. But on earth we still have our flesh and while The Holy Spirit makes us more like Jesus every day, and we endeavor to be like Him. While we live on this earth we still have our flesh, the sin nature we were born with.  Verses 13-14 read,

“But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The first century Christians are the firstfruits. Firstfruits is defined as “the earliest gathered fruits offered to God in acknowledgment of the gift of fruitfulness, and the earliest products or results of an endeavor” They were the first results of Jesus’ ministry.  They were gifts to God as thanks for Jesus richness and blessings. We are the results of their faith and glorification of Jesus. Our lives, like theirs are gifts to God for His blessings. The way we live our lives affects other people. We can glorify Christ, that is project Jesus’ character and love to the world, or we can live in stagnation and never impact the Kingdom of Heaven.  Romans 12:1-2 reads,

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”

We are not alone in our effort to be like Jesus. We are not alone in our hopes to be firstfruits to future generations and living sacrifices to The Lord. We have our Lord Jesus as an example and our Holy Spirit as our teacher, sanctifier, and comforter. We have each other. We have the Christians of the past and the Apostles who have taught us so much. Verse 15 says,

“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.”

Ritual is not meant to replace relationship but the traditions of our faith can teach us and enhance our relationship with God. He doesn’t want ritual, He wants love and He wants us to grow in that love. (Hosea 6:6). It is not legalism to understand and practice the traditions passed down to us from Jesus to the Apostles and to us. Jesus told us to continue the practice of The Passover Seder that we know as The Lord’s Supper. (Luke 22:14-23). When Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He told them to wash one another’s feet. (John 13:1-17 verse 14). We practice these customs because Jesus told us to and because they glorify Him. These traditions give us a practical lesson in Jesus’ salvation and love. They remind us of what Jesus did for us. They encourage us to continue walking the walk with The Lord and with one another. Verses 16-17 read,

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.”

Because The Lord is indwelled in His people, it is He who teaches us, even when it is our pastor, brother, sister, or mentor who lets God use Him. None of us is finished and so we can understand what we’re going through, help each other, and encourage one another. We are not perfect, but we are comforted in knowing that God began working in us and one day that awesome work will be completed and we will be perfected. We take consolation in knowing that God will never give up on us, and we do not give up on each other. Our salvation is not due to us, it is due to Jesus’ grace. Philippians 1:3-7 reminds us,

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.”

Psalm 50 Do You Know God or Do You Know a god?

7/10/2015

Psalm 50

I think that many proclaimed Christians want to forget part of God’s Character, perhaps thinking of Him as a grandfatherly Santa Claus in the sky doling out gifts or the wrathful destroyer of evil. But when we ignore parts of who God is, we do not worship The LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we worship an idol, a god of our own making.  But God is holy, and God is the creator of the entire universe. It is His, and He is judge over every soul in it. Verses 1-2 read,

“The Mighty One, God the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
    God shines forth.”

Asaph, the psalmist, priest, and temple singer begins this Psalm by identifying The Lord by His names The Mighty One and God the Lord. He establishes the power, strength, and sovereignty of The Lord with these names. The Lord speaks His will and His will is manifested. That is how great He is. He spoke and the world was created. His Word became law. His Word became flesh and lived among us, showed us who God is, lived for us, died for us, and resurrected for us. (John 1:1-18). The Lord summons, calls all the earth, not just one race of people, but everyone. He never stops calling people to Him. To those who don’t know Him, He says, “Come and know Me.” to those who call Him Father and Lord, He says, “Come and know Me.” He doesn’t only call with words, He speaks through His work, His perfect beauty is evident through creation, through Jesus life, death, and resurrection, through the Holy Spirit, through the storm, the sun, troubles, and peace. Verses 3-6 say,

“Our God comes; he does not keep silence;
    before him is a devouring fire,
    around him a mighty tempest.
4 He calls to the heavens above
    and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 “Gather to me my faithful ones,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
6 The heavens declare his righteousness,
    for God himself is judge! Selah”

Righteous Holy God judges the whole earth but first He judges those who have made a covenant with Him, those who claim to follow Him, love Him, and be His. Those who represent Him to the rest of the world have a higher calling and responsibility to holiness. Verses 7-15 read,

“Hear, O my people, and I will speak;
    O Israel, I will testify against you.
    I am God, your God.
8 Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;
    your burnt offerings are continually before me.
9 I will not accept a bull from your house
    or goats from your folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine,
    the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the hills,
    and all that moves in the field is mine.

12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
    for the world and its fullness are mine.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
    and perform your vows to the Most High,
15 and call upon me in the day of trouble;
    I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

God is always aware of the rituals of our religion. He ordained some of them and He is not displeased with our sincere offerings, sacrifices, and prayers. But He doesn’t need them. When Israel sacrificed bulls and goats, they were not giving them to God although they viewed it that way. When we give money in the offering, we are not giving our money to God. It is His money we offer back to Him in faith and thanksgiving. God has no needs. We have needs. He doesn’t need us. We need Him. We aren’t doing God any favors when we obey Him or otherwise worship Him. He is The Mighty One, God our Lord.

What displeases our Lord is disingenuous religion and insincere sacrifice. The pious person who recites verse after verse without a relationship with Him, the sanctimonious person who heals the sick without love, and the moralizing person who demands people follow all the laws but leaves out love may as well be a cacophony. They leave the Lord out. Their religiosity is futile. Their god is themselves. They lead people to Hell. They forget that God is their judge. Verses 16-21 read,

“But to the wicked God says:
    “What right have you to recite my statutes
    or take my covenant on your lips?
17 For you hate discipline,
    and you cast my words behind you.
18 If you see a thief, you are pleased with him,
    and you keep company with adulterers.

19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil,
    and your tongue frames deceit.
20 You sit and speak against your brother;
    you slander your own mother's son.
21 These things you have done, and I have been silent;
    you thought that I was one like yourself.
But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.”

So many people claim to be Christians but do not call Jesus Christ Lord. They spout God’s laws but the law is not written on their hearts. They are religious but ignore the wholeness of God. They do not rejoice in suffering, knowing God uses it to mature. They hate discipline and refuse to think God might allow trials and tribulations. They are the ones who speak hate against others. They talk themselves into believing God is pleased by their insincere piety and arrogance. God judges us. We will all be judged. Those who have not formed a friendship with Him through Christ and been sealed by the Holy Spirit, no matter how religious they are, no matter the miracles they perform or the scriptures they preach will go to the eternal pit of Hell. Verses 22-23 read,

“Mark this, then, you who forget God,
    lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!
23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
    to one who orders his way rightly
    I will show the salvation of God!”

Do you know The LORD or do you know a god of your imagination and wishes? Do you depend on God or does your god depend on you? Who is exalted by your life? Who is glorified by your testimony? We need to examine our hearts and lives and be sure we know God for who He is. He is not only Love or only Avenger or Justice, He is God our Almighty Loving Father, Savior, Peace, and Creator. He desires for us to know Him and love Him. He wants a relationship with us not a religion with us. In Mark Chapter 12 Jesus had a conversation with a scribe Verses 28-34 recorded it.

“And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

God wants you, not your religiosity. God doesn’t need you, He desires you. He loves you and wants you to know the joy of knowing Him.

Psalm 40 Your Life is a Testimony to Your Lord.

Psalm 40

One of the few Christianese sayings I like says, “If you were arrested for being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you?” I hope that anyone, especially a lost person who looks at my life for more than five minutes would conclude that I am a Christian, or at the very least there is “something” different about me. Of course there are times when someone looking at me or listening to me would conclude that I’m as lost as the next guy. But you and I, Brother we are supposed to look, sound, and act like Jesus. We are filled with the Holy Spirit and He should be conforming us to Christ’s image. Our lives are supposed to bear witness to Him by the traits we call the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23).

David agreed and this Psalm of praise to The Lord speaks about it as well. Children of God, trust Him and wait patiently for Him instead of struggling without Him. Verses 1-2 read,

“I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
    out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
    making my steps secure.”

God is our rock, our foundation, and our cornerstone. He rescued us from Hell and He gives us a new and solid path to walk as we follow Him. Our salvation alone is reason enough to praise Him for eternity. In our new state of grace, He even gives us the praises to sing to Him and the way to worship Him. Just as we read yesterday in James 3:5-12 the tongue is powerful. And one of the most powerful things it can do is praise God, not only in private or in church but always. People hear us praise The Lord and He uses our praise to call the lost to Him. Verses 3-5 puts it like this,

“He put a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is the man who makes
    the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
    to those who go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
    your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
    none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
    yet they are more than can be told.”

 Our lives are testimonies to our souls. Our lives lived following Jesus, anointed by the Father, and filled with the Spirit testify to the beauty of God. He gives us peace and joy. He blesses us, provides for us, and showers us with good gifts. People notice, particularly when we relish and use the gifts God gives. We are not meant to keep our salvation to ourselves. We are not meant to hoard His gifts and not share them with the world. Those gifts and blessings have purpose. When we use them we get more. When we exercise them, they grow. I used to long for the gift of prophecy. So I prayed and asked The Lord to grant me that gift. He had given me the gifts of encouragement and discernment. And I recognized those gifts and used them often. So my Father, The Creator of the Universe gave me the gift of prophecy, and I exercise it often. I use it to encourage people. It has grown in me. God gave me a message the other night for a woman who was visiting our church while on vacation. It moved her. She was in awe of God and His love. Whatever that word meant to her, God used it to move her toward healing her broken heart. Had I kept that gift to myself, she may have left the church in the same state she entered.

Christianity is not like other religions. It is not about rituals, rules, and rigidity. It is a relationship with the Lord God Almighty. It is about love, receiving God’s love, reciprocating that love, loving others as He loves us, and emanating His love in tangible and purposeful ways. One of my favorite verses is Hosea 6:6, Jesus quoted it at least twice (as recorded in Matthew 9:3 and 12:7 and ). It says,

“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
    the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”

Salvation doesn’t come from following rules or performing rituals. Salvation comes from faith. It comes from, The Father’s call to us, The Son’s sacrifice for us, and The Spirit’s conforming us. All you have to do to be saved is acknowledge that you have done wrongs in your life, repent (regret and stop) from those wrongs, and ask Jesus to forgive you and be your Lord. There is nothing else required. Once you do that you are brought into a relationship with God Himself and He nurtures it as you submit to Him. We change because God changes us. We are new creations, born again spiritually. We no longer have to live like we did before. Verses 6-8 read,

“In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
    but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering
    you have not required.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
    in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do your will, O my God;
    your law is within my heart.”

We just can’t keep that awesome gift to ourselves! God is great! God is love! God is good! We are meant to tell people with our mouths, hearts, and actions. Verses 9-10 say,

“I have told the glad news of deliverance
    in the great congregation;
behold, I have not restrained my lips,
    as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
    I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
    from the great congregation.”

We aren’t perfect. We are still going to slip up but we are forgiven. We have The Lord’s grace and mercy. He sees us as righteous, sets us apart as holy, and uses us to call others to Him.

But we will not go through life without suffering. In fact, some people will hate us merely because we are called by Jesus’ name and filled with His Spirit. The spirit of the enemy cannot abide the Holy Spirit of God. The enemy gets upset when we live our lives as a testimony to God. He doesn’t want to lose more souls to Heaven. But in Christ we are protected, sealed, and delivered from the enemy. The more he tries to hurt us, the more we know we are living boldly for Jesus. We can have faith in our Lord. Verses 11-15 read,

“As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
    your mercy from me;
your steadfast love and your faithfulness will
    ever preserve me!
12 For evils have encompassed me
    beyond number;
my iniquities have overtaken me,
    and I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head;
    my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me!
    O Lord, make haste to help me!
14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be turned back and brought to dishonor
    who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
    who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

Remember Believer, You are God’s child with all the privileges and honors that entails. You can live your life confidently and courageously but not arrogantly. Without Jesus you are destitute. Without the Spirit you are a sinner. Without the Father you are an orphan. David says it this way in verses 16-17,

“But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
    say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17 As for me, I am poor and needy,
    but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    do not delay, O my God!”

So ask yourself that question today, “if you were arrested for being a Christian would there be enough evidence to convict you?” Do you sing a new song? Are you a new creation? Do your actions speak of Jesus? Do you love others as Jesus loves you? Are you filled with the Spirit and do you emanate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control?

Psalm 19 The Heavens and The Earth and All Within Creation Declare God’s Majesty.

Picture
Psalm 19

The Lord, Creator of Heaven and Earth is evident in every part of His creation. From the sky to man His mark is clear. The creation shouts the proof of its Creator. All creation carries the Hallmark God. His children are evidence of His perfection and love. We are amazing complex masterpieces who have to have been formed purposely. He is perfect and calling Him Lord is a joy.

Verses 1-4 read,

“The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,”

Have you ever spent time just admiring His creation? I know when I am in a place of natural beauty I can see God in everything around me, the magnificence of the mountains, the brilliance of the sky, and the music of the birds, wind, and water. In Brazil’s Amazon I slept on a boat in the open air. Night was dark with no man made lights except what the boat produced. The stars were more numerous than I had ever imagined. The sky seemed so close. It was truly awesome. I was filled with wonder and amazement for God. All of nature testifies to the Lord.

Look at David’s description of the sun in verses 5-6.

“which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them,
    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”

Have you ever had the chance to watch a sunrise? As the sun rises the colors of the once velvet black sky change to the most beautiful hues of blue, purple, orange, and pink. It is as if God is kissing your soul as you watch Him make a new day, a new beginning.

The rising of the sun, the dawning of a new day is a testimony to Jesus Christ. He is the bridegroom in all His splendor and magnificence. He never tires. He did all He did with joy, even dying on the cross with joy. With His death He brought us reconciliation with The Father. With His resurrection He gave us hope. With His ascension He gave us The Holy Spirit, His promise. Just as the heat of the sun affects every part of creation, so does Jesus touch every heart. While not every person acknowledges Him or accepts Him, every person on earth seeks to fill the need for God in their soul. Look at the most isolated of peoples, the tribes hidden deep in the jungles and you will see they all have created religions, worship gods, and acknowledge there is a Creator.

Just as God made the laws of physics, He also made laws of righteousness. Look within your soul, look at the universal laws of morality and it is clear. All men know that harming another is wrong. There is no nation, tribe, or people on earth who do not have rules against murder, stealing, and hurting people.

We are not perfect and we will mess up and break His laws, but God is perfect. He cannot break His laws. His perfection and tremendous love made Him come to us, live perfectly and pay the price of death for sin for us. He attributed us with Jesus’ perfect goodness. He did that just to give us the chance to know Him and be forever with Him.

The Holy Spirit within us allows us to see clearly the true Laws of God and follow them. We are able to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength because His Spirit is in us. We are able to love others as He loves us because we know what His love is. His Spirit transforms us, conforms us to Jesus’ image. He teaches us who He is and allows us to be love as He is love. Verses 7-8 read,

“The law of the Lord is perfect,
    reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
    making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
    enlightening the eyes;”

We once were dead. We once thought that to be good we had to follow countless rules. Following the law made people appear good on the outside. Following Jesus by faith makes us new and makes us righteous from the soul which then shows on the outside. He gave us new life. He makes us wise with His wisdom which is love. He gives us joy even through suffering because we know His love. He opens our eyes and lets us see with His eyes and heart, with His love.

Attaining the perfection of God’s love, being like Him is our goal. Our relationship with Him is worth more than anything on earth. He is more valuable than we can even comprehend. And do you know that He cherishes us even more than we cherish Him? We love Him with His Spirit and with our imperfections still in there. But He loves us completely, perfectly, and purely. Verses 9-11 describe it this way,

“the fear of the Lord is clean,
    enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
    and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.”

The people who tried to keep the laws of the Old Covenant weren’t filled with joy. But they had it wrong, even before Jesus, they had it wrong. They missed the basics. God didn’t want rituals. He didn’t want every rule He made to have five more slapped on to it. He wanted people to know Him, love Him, and have faith. One of my favorite Bible Verses is Hosea 6:6.

“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
    the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”

It was never about keeping over 600 laws. It was always about loving God, experiencing Him, and being loved by Him. That is what made David righteous. That is what made Abraham righteous. That is what the Pharisees missed. They loved the rules not God. They loved the rules so much they missed what God’s Word really had to say. David didn’t miss the true message in the scriptures. He sought God, he loved God, and he reveled in God’s love for him. Verses 12-14 read,

“Who can discern his errors?
    Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
    let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable in your sight,
    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

God is perfect. In Jesus we are made perfect too! Seriously, when the accuser throws up all your sins in your face recognize his feeble lies as just that. God forgave you, you are perfect, holy in His sight. Since He is God, the Creator what He declares as righteous cannot be declared sinful. Don’t wallow in the sins of your past. Don’t flounder in the accusations of the enemy. Instead, meditate on the perfecting and perfect love of God. Consider your redemption and don’t devalue it.

You are the crowning glory of creation. The grandeur of the mountains, the majesty of the oceans, and the brilliance of the skies have nothing on the glory of you. Psalm 8:3-6 describes you like this,

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?

5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
    and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
    you have put all things under his feet,”

Leviticus 11 Distinguished by Cleanliness

Leviticus Chapter 11

This chapter gives rules about the animals that are clean and unclean and therefore may be used as food or are prohibited to be used as food. Israel was God’s chosen people. They were not like the rest of the world and God wanted them to stand out. Part of their distinction was in the food they ate or more properly in the food they didn’t eat.

Land animals that couldn’t be used as food were those with cloven hooves or those who chew cud. If an animal had both these characteristics it was considered clean. So, for example cattle which has both the cloven hoof and chews cud could be food, but the camel which doesn’t have a cloven hoof but does chew cud was not clean.

Of water animals the rule was simple only fishes with scales and fins could be eaten. The Lord gave a list of birds to be considered unclean rather than characteristics. Verses 13-19 list them.

“the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 14 the kite, the falcon of any kind, 15 every raven of any kind, 16 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the short-eared owl, 18 the barn owl, the tawny owl, the carrion vulture, 19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.”

When it comes to insects, all except those with jointed legs above their feet such as locust and grasshoppers were prohibited. Also forbidden were a list of swarming animals such as rats and mice and lizards and geckos.

God told Aaron and Moses that the animals that were considered unclean should be deemed detestable. Israel should detest or loathe the idea of becoming unclean, like the rest of the world instead of remaining pure like the Lord. Even touching the carcass of an unclean animal or touching an object that had touched such a carcass was unclean. These rules were strict and whoever became unclean would remain so until the day ended at evening. They had to wash the objects or clothing that had become unclean.

God distinguished the clean animals from the unclean. When we look at the list of banned animals we can see many of them live off the dead, many eat carrion or otherwise carry disease with them. But God doesn’t give a reason for their unclean status. He only gave a reason why His children should remain pure. God distinguishes His people from the world as well. Verses 44-45 read,

“For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground.45 For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”

The Law was what separated Israel from the gentiles. Under the New Covenant we are given freedom from the Law and we are set apart because God has made us holy. We are characterized and recognized by our love and pursuit of godliness rather than by our endeavor to keep the law. Jesus had broken the entire law down to two commandments. He told us if we kept those we would keep the heart of the law. Matthew 22:37-40 says,

“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

This was not new. God wanted His children to be set apart from the world. But He never wanted rituals. He wanted a relationship. He wanted to His children to truly be His children and Himself to be their God. Hosea 6:6 says,

“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
    the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”

Jesus quoted that scripture to the Pharisees in Matthew 9:13 and Matthew 12:7. Israel had become obsessed with the Law instead of the God who gave them the Law. They had left Him out of their religion.

We are supposed to stand out from the world. We are holy! We are royal. We are a peculiar people. In John chapter 13 Jesus gave a new commandment. He says our difference should be obvious. John 13:34-35 reads,

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Believer, is it clear that you are not like the world? You have the holy name of Christ and His nature. Are you peculiar? Does the world look at you and think you’re odd for the love you demonstrate? Is your love of God so apparent that you are weird?

We are no longer bound by the law to be holy. We are bound by love, by blood, and by grace to our Father, our Redeemer, and our Comforter. We are clean where we once were unclean. Nothing can make us unclean again. Nothing.
