2 Kings 20:12-21 Pride Usurps Faith

How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? John 5:44
How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? John 5:44
2 Kings 20:12-21
Hezekiah was a faithful king. Because of his faith, the Lord had given him fifteen extra years of life. And for His glory, the Lord had delivered Jerusalem from the hands of Assyria during Hezekiah’s reign. Isaiah gave Hezekiah God’s word, “and I will add fifteen years to your life. I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for my own sake and for my servant David's sake.” (2 Kings 20:6). Like many of us who have had spiritual triumphs, Hezekiah took credit for his faith and blessings himself. He didn’t turn from the Lord, he didn’t declare it to the world, he probably didn’t even say it to himself, but he did take pride in his good works. Pride doesn’t come in and announce itself; it is sly. Pride sneaks in and often we do not know it has taken a place in our hearts until it has placed us on the throne for a while.
Hezekiah had recovered but news of his illness had spread to a far off country, Babylon. Babylon was not a threat, they had barely heard of the country before. The king wanted his representatives to pay Hezekiah and Jerusalem, this city that had somehow not been conquered by Assyria when every nation around them had. They wanted to visit the king and ally themselves with him. Babylon worshipped the sun and the sun had taken 10 steps back for Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:11-12). They wanted Jerusalem on their side when they decided to usurp Assyria. Verses 12-13 read,
“At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that Hezekiah had been sick. 13 And Hezekiah welcomed them, and he showed them all his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his armory, all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.”
Hezekiah proudly showed off all that Jerusalem had, all their wealth, treasures, and weapons. He was pleased with himself for how he had rebuilt Jerusalem’s stocks and resources after Assyria had depleted them. But had pride not usurped the throne in Hezekiah’s heart, he would not have made his stores worthless by letting this nation see them. He didn’t know Babylon would be the worst enemy Israel and Judah had ever faced. But he should have known that Babylon was a servant to Assyria (2 Kings 17:24). He certainly should have known he did not need to make an alliance with idolaters (2 Corinthians 6:14). He should have known he did not need to impress Babylon or anyone else, He needed to only please The Lord. Jesus spoke about the danger of seeking praise from men instead of The Lord. John 5:44 reads,
“How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”
But self-satisfaction clouded the king’s judgement.  The Lord sent Isaiah to Hezekiah immediately. Verses 14-18 read,
“Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far country, from Babylon.” 15 He said, “What have they seen in your house?” And Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house; there is nothing in my storehouses that I did not show them.”
16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord: 17 Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the Lord. 18 And some of your own sons, who shall be born to you, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”
Imagine hearing that everything you have worked for will be gone in the next generation. Consider how you would feel to hear your own children would be mutilated and forced to serve a foreign king. Hezekiah had been reproofed by The Lord through Isaiah and he gave him the answer he thought Isaiah and the Lord wanted to hear. Verse 19 reads,
“Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Why not, if there will be peace and security in my days?”
Out loud he thanked Isaiah for the chastisement; he said what looked right. But in his heart, he didn’t care about his son’s reign or his other sons’ enslavement. He was just happy his reign would be okay. What happened to the man who had been told he would die but asked the Lord to let him live? What happened to the man who knew The Lord could and would do the impossible for him? What happened to Hezekiah’s deep faith? Pride had snuck in and knocked his faith out. Hezekiah had taken the lordship of his life away from The Lord.
Jerusalem no longer worshipped idols because of Hezekiah’s good works but now Hezekiah worshipped himself instead of God. He may not have realized this was the case. We usually don’t know it when we have taken the throne away from God. But God knows. He knows our hearts better than we do. (Jeremiah 17:10). That is why it is so important to ask Him to search our hearts for us and lead us back into alignment with His image. Psalm 139:23-24 reads,
“Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting!”

It is too easy to let pride sneak in and take over. It is not so easy to kick pride out so we can get off the throne and put The Lord to take reign of our lives again.

2 Kings 19 Hezekiah’s Faith and Assyria Part Two

2 Kings 19
Today, we continue the story we began yesterday from 2 Kings 18, this exciting tale is also recounted in Isaiah 36-37. Remember that Judah’s king Hezekiah was a very faithful king who had a moment of doubt and agreed to pay tribute to Assyria to try and save Judah from the annihilation that Assyria had brought to Israel and countless other nations surrounding them after Assyria had invaded Judah. The Assyrian king sent his representatives led by Rabshakeh to get Hezekiah to surrender Jerusalem. But Hezekiah would not listen to the boldfaced lies of Rabshakeh who scorned and belittled The Lord saying The Lord could not and would not save Jerusalem from desolation.
Assyria had besieged and conquered nation after nation surrounding them, they had captured several Judahites cities. The situation was dire and faith was not easy. God does not expect us to stoically sit through our suffering. Even Jesus cried out to His Father and begged Him to let Him skip the torture of the cross (Matthew 26:36-42). But like Jesus, He wants us to learn obedience and faith through that suffering. Hebrews 5:7-10 reads,
“In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priestafter the order of Melchizedek.”
When Hezekiah heard the report of what had happened he was more than a little distressed. Where would he turn? Verses 1-4 read,
“As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. 3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. 4 It may be that the Lord your God heard all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.”
Look at the phrase Hezekiah used, “children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.” That describes so well how I have felt sometimes under the oppression of the enemy. I have thought to myself, “I just don’t have the strength to keep going. I can’t do this.” But the wonderful news is, it is not my strength that saves me. It is not our effort that rescues us. It is The Almighty LORD. He lets us be strong in Him. He is with us even to the end of our rope and when we let go of the rope, when we give up trying to save ourselves, He takes us in His hands and He delivers us. Isaiah 40:28-31 reads,
“Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.”

Believer, it is a lie that ‘God will not give you more than you can handle.’ God does not give you the bad things in your life, He does allow some bad things to happen for various reasons. They will almost certainly be ‘more than you can handle.’ If you could handle your sin, trials, and suffering yourself, why would you turn to Him? He saves the wicked, not the righteous (Mark 2:17,Matthew 9:13) He binds up the brokenhearted not the satisfied. Read through the Psalms. David was very often so anguished and distraught that felt his heart was melting in his chest. He turned to The Lord and The Lord bought him through. Psalm 13 is an example.
“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I take counsel in my soul
    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
    light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
    lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.”

It was Hezekiah’s attempt to use his own resources to save Jerusalem that put Jerusalem in danger (2 Kings 18:13-18).
Isaiah, God’s prophet to Judah during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (Isaiah 1:1) gave the men God’s answer. Verses 5-7 read,
“When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled me. 7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’”
God is not unaware of the evil in men’s hearts. He knew Rabshakeh’s heart and He heard the vile things that came out of his mouth. The Lord would not let him defame Him nor threaten His children. He would teach Rabshakeh just who He is. Verses 8-13 continue the story.
“The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he heard that the king had left Lachish. 9 Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “Behold, he has set out to fight against you.” So he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan,Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’”
Rabshakeh kept the smack talk coming, he was shameless and audacious as he taunted The LORD and Jerusalem. Hezekiah had faith in God but that didn’t mean he was not distraught over the situation. When he received Rabshakeh’s abhorrent message he went straight to The Lord. It is our response to fear, dreadful circumstances and the enemy that define our faith or doubt. We can turn to ourselves, money, government, or our other idols or we can turn to The Lord and know He will fight for us, He will never forsake us. Verses 14-19 describe Hezekiah’s response.
“Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord.15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 16 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 17 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 19 So now, O Lord our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone.”
I think there is an abundance to learn from Hezekiah’s prayer. One of the most important is that Hezekiah spent time studying scripture, this king followed the teaching of a priest or a prophet or read the word himself. He knew that the Lord is enthroned above the cherubim.  That means he had read the prophets or listened to the readings of the prophets and taken it to heart. He also addressed God with a description of His greatness, power, and concern. While he spoke his heart to God, God fortified him. And he asked the Lord to save Israel, prove Rabshakeh wrong, and show Himself as LORD to Assyria.
This was before the Lord had sent His Spirit to the believers. He was only on Prophets and a very few others at this time. So He spoke to Hezekiah through Isaiah. Verses 20-24 read,
“Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. 21 This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him:
“She despises you, she scorns you--
    the virgin daughter of Zion;
she wags her head behind you--
    the daughter of Jerusalem.

22 “Whom have you mocked and reviled?
    Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes to the heights?
    Against the Holy One of Israel!
23 By your messengers you have mocked the Lord,
    and you have said, ‘With my many chariots
I have gone up the heights of the mountains,
    to the far recesses of Lebanon;
I felled its tallest cedars,
    its choicest cypresses;
I entered its farthest lodging place,
    its most fruitful forest.
24 I dug wells
    and drank foreign waters,
and I dried up with the sole of my foot
    all the streams of Egypt.’

Although the Lord is speaking to Hezekiah, His prophecy is for Sennacherib the king of Assyria. First He told Sennacherib what his crimes were. Sennacherib had gone against The Lord, he had mocked Him, and he had acted as if he were a god taking everything and anything he wanted. He took credit for the Lord’s work. But God had more to tell him. Verses 25-29 read,
“Have you not heard
    that I determined it long ago?
I planned from days of old
    what now I bring to pass,
that you should turn fortified cities
    into heaps of ruins,
26 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength,
    are dismayed and confounded,
and have become like plants of the field
    and like tender grass,
like grass on the housetops,
    blighted before it is grown.

27 “But I know your sitting down
    and your going out and coming in,
    and your raging against me.
28 Because you have raged against me
    and your complacency has come into my ears,
I will put my hook in your nose
    and my bit in your mouth,
and I will turn you back on the way
    by which you came.”

It was the Lord who allowed Sennacherib to be king, to conquer, and do all he had done. And the Lord would also be the one who made him return home and meet the violent death he had forced on so many others. God knows what evil men do, just like He knows what good men do. He knows every heart, He is the One who created each one. You don’t have to worry that God doesn’t know how people have hurt you. He does. The wages of sin is death (Ezekiel 18:20, Romans 6:23). They will pay with their lives or Jesus will pay with His, either way it is not your concern. Vengeance is the Lord’s and He loves you. He is Jealous over you! People will not get away with hurting you, His beloved child. Nahum 1:2-3 reads,
“The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
    the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
    and keeps wrath for his enemies.
3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
    and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
His way is in whirlwind and storm,
    and the clouds are the dust of his feet.”

Then The Lord had a promise for Hezekiah and the remnant of Jerusalem. Verses 29-34 read,
“And this shall be the sign for you: this year eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs of the same. Then in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord will do this.
32 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. 33 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 34 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”
The Lord gave Jerusalem a command and a promise for two years they would not have to plant food, just eat what grew. On the third year they would again be able to sow, reap, and plant and they would know that once again Jerusalem would be firmly theirs. God would do the defending and the saving. God kept His word as He always does. Verses 35-37 read,
“And that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 36 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh. 37 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.”
Believer, I know that you suffer and sometimes it seems like you cannot last one more day. Sometimes it feels like you cannot muster the strength to reach the end of the tunnel. But you do not have to. Let the Lord be your strength and your shield. Faith is not the absence of doubt, it is the courageous act of responding to it by turning to The Lord instead of giving in to fear. Remember trust in the Lord and He will give you joy, even in your suffering.

1 Peter 2:1-12 Jesus is Either Your Cornerstone or Your Stumbling Block

1 Peter Chapter 2 Verses 1-12

It is a choice to follow Jesus and live a holy life. But it is a choice that believers want to make as we mature in the Word. That maturation doesn’t happen automatically. The fruit doesn’t just suddenly appear. The Holy Spirit purifies us through the fires we face. (1 Peter 1:6-8). He transforms us through the Word that we read, hear, and experience. Verses 1-3 read,

“So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”

Leaving sin behind is not easy at first. Malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander are common and quite natural to the flesh. But as we continue and we long to grow, as we get to know our Lord more and more closely, we want to be like Him, not the world. We know that life in Christ is so much better than life in the world. The Lord is good! The spiritual food of His Word, intimacy with Him, and the relationship He gives us is sweeter than words can describe. We want it increasingly, progressively, and deeper.

The world can’t understand. They look at us from the outside and wonder why anyone would choose to live a life of putting sin away, of purposely choosing to walk the more difficult road of love, truth, sincerity, good will, and encouragement over natural longings of the flesh. They rejected Christ because His teachings didn’t make sense to them. What looks absurd, preposterous and unreasonable to them, is beautiful, perfect, and wise to us. It is perfectly reasonable to us, because we accepted Christ. We were given the Holy Spirit and He changes us and allows us to see the excellent and flawless truth and wisdom of the Kingdom of God.

Jesus is the foundation of that wisdom. Without Him we can’t possibly understand. Isaiah compared Him to the cornerstone a building and Peter quoted him to get across his point that we as Christians are different than the world. Verses 4-6 say,

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

The cornerstone is the foundation upon which the rest of the building is constructed. It is essential and it determines the position of every other stone. Jesus is our cornerstone, our foundation and we are stones in the building with Him. Without Him, the temple would crumble. For believers Jesus is our keystone and basis. He builds us up. He makes all things possible. But for outsiders, He is a stumbling block, an obstacle which they do not understand. They disobey because they are led by the flesh and see Jesus not as God, the Lover of their souls but an offense and insult to who they are. (Verses 7-8).

We are different. We are not like the world. We see the beauty of Christ. We have tasted and seen that the Lord is good. He is essential to our being. He makes it possible to obey. He makes it possible to live lives of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. And as we mature we do not have to struggle to manifest those characteristics, we become more like Christ so we look and act more like Him. It is still a choice to stand out from the world. We have to keep in mind we are not like the lost. We choose to obey. We choose to be founded on Love. Verses 9-10 put it this way.

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

We should celebrate our distinctiveness. Our idiosyncrasy is the Holy Spirit alive in us. Our difference is Jesus. Our calling is holy. We are chosen by God, we belong to Him. Honoring that awesome mission and identity is not always easy. It is not easy to elect not to lie, to forgive rather than hate, or to be kind person who hates us. But we are established in Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit and chosen by the Father. We are special. We are not like the world, we are exiles among them. And we should be conspicuous. Verses 11-12 read,

“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.”

John 1:19-34 John the Baptist, the voice who pointed to Christ

11/9/2014

John 1 19-34

John the Baptist was baptizing[1] a lot of people. He had followers and he taught people. He was making a splash. So much so that the Pharisees were becoming concerned about a possible new sect sprouting up. So they sent some representatives out to find out more about what he was doing.

Everything John did pointed to Jesus. His ministry was about the Messiah. And so when the priests came and asked him who he was, his answers directed them to the Messiah. They said, “Who are you?” He said, “I’m not the Christ.” But that didn’t answer their questions. So realizing that he wasn’t going to start teaching them about his ministry, they asked, “are you Elijah?” and then, “are you the prophet?” (The Jewish people were expecting Elijah and the Prophet to come before judgment day). John answered both, “No, I am not.”

John wasn’t the only guy out there talking about the soon to come Christ, but he was different. He wasn’t claiming to be a great prophet, although he was. (Later in this chapter we will see God speaking directly to John). He wasn’t trying to gain fame for himself, but for Christ. He wasn’t trying to get rich, in fact he lived kind of a hippie lifestyle, eating organically in the wilderness and wearing clothes no one was going to rush out to copy. So the Levites were kind of exasperated and they said, “C’mon who are you? We’ve gotta tell the big wigs something!” So John answered, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Verse 23).

John quoted Isaiah 40:3 to them. That should have answered them completely or at least piqued their curiosity, but the priests were not open to the truth of scripture, only their preconception about the scriptures and the prophecies. With this quote, John told them exactly who He was and once again pointed to the Messiah. But they were too stubborn to hear his answer and asked. “Then if you aren’t the Christ, and you’re not Elijah or the Prophet, why are you baptizing?”

John could have told them about himself, his ministry, his training and the good he was effecting but once again took the chance to tell them about the coming Christ. Instead of explaining who he was, his identity was related completely to Christ. His answer is recorded in verses 26-27.

“ John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

John was telling them that the Messiah was already living among them and He would soon begin His ministry. And the ministry of the Christ would be so much higher and better than his own. John baptized with water, but Christ would cleanse and purify differently. His ministry as so much higher that John couldn’t even untie his sandal. Even this sentence referred prophetically to Christ and should have caused the Levites to want to know more about Him. It alludes to Christ as our Bridegroom and John as the one unable to be a bridegroom[2]

Every opportunity John had, he gave attention to Christ rather than himself. His entire ministry was about shining a light on The Light. He had gained fame. He could have live the comfortable life of a rabbi. Pharisees were worried about his identity. The government had taken notice of him. He was shining the light of Christ into the darkness of people’s lives and they were either humble enough to repent and want to know more about the Savior or they got angry and afraid.

Is your ministry about Jesus or you? Does your life point people to God’s power and grace or your charm and strength? Is your identity in Christ or in your flesh? When people ask who you are do they hear who Jesus is?

[1] Baptism was not a new concept in Judaism, it was something the people did to purify their bodies and prepare themselves for a closer walk with God. It was different than the ritual washings to that cleansed the body for particular sins. It was not because it had been prescribed by the law but because they were choosing to for something special. It had its roots when God revealed Himself on Sinai, before He did so the Israelites had to wash themselves and their clothes by immersion. When proselytes were ready to commit to Judaism, they were baptized to bring them into the protection of God.

Isaiah 66 God doesn't want your elaborate worship. He wants a relationship with you.

Read Isaiah Chapter 66

Do you imagine God needs you, your worship, or your works? He doesn’t. He doesn’t even want ritualistic superficial worship. He is not blessed by your singing songs to Him while you think about your lunch plans. He is not blessed by sacrifices made down to the letter of the law if the heart is not in it. God is blessed by the person whose sacrifice is their pride, who worships Him in truth and spirit, and who believes and obeys Him. Verses 1-3 put it this way,

“Thus says the Lord:
“Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
    and what is the place of my rest?
2 All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things came to be,
declares the Lord.
But this is the one to whom I will look:
    he who is humble and contrite in spirit
    and trembles at my word.

3 “He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
    he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck;
he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers pig's blood;
    he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.
These have chosen their own ways,
    and their soul delights in their abominations;”

If you have not humbled yourself to worship God in your spirit, then your acts of worship are mere posturing and you may as well be insulting Him rather than praising Him with your lips or ceremonies. God considers those whose worship is shallow and insincere His enemies.

God doesn’t need you, you need Him. He desires you to be in a real relationship with Him. He wants you to know the joy and love He has for you. Following Jesus is not about following rules and conforming to the standards of the church. Following Jesus is about being a friend of God and transforming to the image of Christ.

God promises recompense to His enemies and reward to His friends. Believer, you may feel injustice now as you suffer hate and injustice for your faith, but God is a God of justice and He assures you that they will pay for their wrongs. He promise His friends not only future rewards but compensations and gifts now as well. Your relationship with Him gives you relief and help from the Almighty. The same God who will destroy your enemies preserves you. Verses 12-14 read,

“For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
    so I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
    your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
    and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.”

Do you try to make yourself better? Do you do all you can to be good? You can’t make yourself good. You can’t ever do enough to make yourself good enough. Trying to make yourself good enough is an atrocity to God, just as if you sacrificed a pig and drank its blood. Verse 17 puts it like this,

“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.”

God doesn’t want your convoluted methods to show Him you are a good Christian. He doesn’t want your elaborate ways of saying you love Him. He wants you to know Him, love Him, and follow Him with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. He wants a mutual camaraderie and deep familiarity with you.

God knows your heart. He knows the hearts of everyone. He discerns the affected from the genuine. There are two ends. One for God’s friends and one for His enemies. Verses 22-24 describe them,

“For as the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
    so shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Examine your walk with the Lord. Is Jesus truly your Lord or is it you in charge? Is your worship earnest? Perhaps there is some mendacity or hollowness to your worship. God reveals those things to you so you can give them to Him. Let Him purify you. Let Him transform you. Humble yourself before your Lord God before He humbles you.

Isaiah 65 God sees past lip-service to the heart

Read Isaiah Chapter 65

Some people who called themselves God’s chosen people thought that being Israelite was good enough for God. Some people who call themselves Christian think that calling themselves by His name is good enough and makes them better than other people. But being Jewish or being baptized has nothing to do with a relationship with God or salvation.

Where is your heart? How do your priorities manifest themselves in your daily life and in your relationship with God? Do you say you obey the laws God has given you and yet you are not even kosher? Do you think God doesn’t care about your lies? Do you proclaim Christianity but ignore the hungry man on the corner on your way to church on Christmas Eve? If you say you are a child of the Lord God Almighty, then you desire what He desires, you love what and whom He loves.

God wants a relationship with you. He is waiting with open arms for you. Even though you ignore His laws, His wants, and His heart. Verses 1-5 read,

“I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me;
    I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here I am, here I am,”
    to a nation that was not called by my name.
2 I spread out my hands all the day
    to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
    following their own devices;
3 a people who provoke me
    to my face continually,
sacrificing in gardens
    and making offerings on bricks;
4 who sit in tombs,
    and spend the night in secret places;
who eat pig's flesh,
    and broth of tainted meat is in their vessels;
5 who say, “Keep to yourself,
    do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.”

You can choose to continue pleasing yourself. You can continue to think you are good enough and even better than other people. God will let you. And you will pay for your offenses. Or you can realize your depravity and ask God to forgive you. You can accept Jesus’ grace and align your heart with God’s heart and your spirit with His Spirit.

God has left a remnant of Israel that will turn to Him for salvation. God has chosen others to be His people as well, who changed the direction of their lives from self-fulfillment to Godly aspirations. For those He has promised amazing things. Just as He promised terrible repayment for sin, He promised to forget the sins of those who call on Jesus and give them great rewards instead. (Verses 8-12).

There is only one choice really. You can choose Jesus or you can choose to deny God. The consequences are in verses 13-16.

“Therefore thus says the Lord God:
“Behold, my servants shall eat,
    but you shall be hungry;
behold, my servants shall drink,
    but you shall be thirsty;
behold, my servants shall rejoice,
    but you shall be put to shame;
14 behold, my servants shall sing for gladness of heart,
    but you shall cry out for pain of heart
    and shall wail for breaking of spirit.
15 You shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse,
    and the Lord God will put you to death,
    but his servants he will call by another name.
16 So that he who blesses himself in the land
    shall bless himself by the God of truth,
and he who takes an oath in the land
    shall swear by the God of truth;
because the former troubles are forgotten
    and are hidden from my eyes.”

Where are your priorities? Is your assertion of Christ lip-service or does it go to the heart and express itself in your life? Read about the beauty and the joy of Eternity for those whom God has given a new name. Verses 17-19 read,

“For behold, I create new heavens
    and a new earth,
and the former things shall not be remembered
    or come into mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever
    in that which I create;
for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy,
    and her people to be a gladness.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem
    and be glad in my people;
no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping
    and the cry of distress.”

Verses 24-25 read,

“Before they call I will answer;
    while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall graze together;
    the lion shall eat straw like the ox,
    and dust shall be the serpent's food.
They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain,”
says the Lord.”

The greatest joy of salvation is the relationship you have with the Lord. Your Father, Your Savior and Your Comforter is closer to you than someone without that relationship can imagine. He knows you so well that even before you ask, He answers. If you do not know Him like this, step down from your thoughts of how good you are, realize you just can’t ever be good enough, and give yourself to Him completely. Let Him forgive you and transform you and give you the joy of grace. If you don’t know how, I am right here to guide you. Just contact me and I’ll help you. It is easy to give up trying to be good enough and striving to be holy. Call on Jesus.

Isaiah 64 God joyfully helps those who wait on Him.

Read Isaiah Chapter 64

Faith in God doesn’t make suffering go away or easier. Pain is still pain. Faith in God helps you remember that He has a plan and a purpose. It helps you know that it is temporary. It allows you to let God work in you and transform you. It is okay to cry out to Him. He is there for you in every way. Faith lets you trust God to take care of you rather than struggling to find a way yourself. His way will likely not be the way you would choose to do things, but then He is Righteous and Perfect Love. We are not.

The people of Israel were in dire straits. They were desperate for God’s deliverance. They called out to God to make Himself known not only to them but to their enemies as well. They praised God as well for His awesome might. They remembered all he had done for them in the past to keep their faith that He would deliver them now as well. Knowing God is key to staying steadfast in your faith. That requires time getting to know Him, reading His word, listening to His words, and following Him. Additionally remember what the Lord has done for you will bolster your faith as you go through the difficult times you go through. Verse 4 reads,

“From of old no one has heard
    or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
    who acts for those who wait for him.”

No idol, no god, no spirit but The LORD has ever done anything to act on behalf of petitioners. There is only One True God, The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. And He acts on those who wait for Him. It doesn’t read “who helps those who help themselves.” It doesn’t read “who saves those who rescue themselves.” It reads “who acts for those who wait for Him.”

Do you wait for Him? Do you depend on Him? I have to admit that too many times I ask for God’s help and then I run around and try to take care of the problem myself. God may or may not choose to intervene when you are working on your own rescue. His solution will likely not be the same as yours. His is always better. How can your obey Him, if you haven’t listened? How can you listen if you haven’t been still and waited for Him to answer? How can you wait for Him to answer if you don’t depend on Him? The Lord gladly helps you! He happily saves you.  Verse 5 reads,

“You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
    those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
    in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?”

Our sins separate us from God. Because of all the wrong in our lives, we can’t even speak to God. But our Father loves us so much and wants a relationship with us so much He sent His Son, Jesus to be our Savior. Through Jesus’ sacrifice to redeem us and restore us we are able to call out to God. And He gives us this amazing closeness with Him. His Spirit enters into us, allows us to commune with Him, speak with Him, listen to Him, obey, and believe Him. That is awesome in the truest definition of the word. I know it fills me with awe, joy, and wonder to consider that I have the ability to connect with God on a level so profound.

We can’t save ourselves. We cannot ever be good enough to be good. You can be perfect, obey every law of God, even those you have no control over such as whether you are blind, lame, deformed, or disfigured as in Leviticus 21:18, and still not save yourself. The only way to salvation is from the Father. The only way to be saved is Jesus. The only way to have faith and believe is through the Holy Spirit. Give yourself over to Him, let Him have you and see what He does. He loves, He saves and liberates, and He transforms you. Verse 8 reads,

“But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
    we are all the work of your hand.”

There are ordeals all around you. There is suffering in your life constantly, but you can remain faithful because you know who God is and what He can do. You know that one day all God’s enemies will pay the price that Jesus already paid for you.

Isaiah 63 Jesus is the only one who can save you.

Read Isaiah Chapter 63

Verse 1 reads,

“Who is this who comes from Edom,
    in crimsoned garments from Bozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
    marching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
    mighty to save.”

To whom is this verse referring? It is Jesus. His clothes made deep red by the blood of our enemies marching with might from His victory on the Day of Vengeance. Verse 3 describes it this way,

“I have trodden the winepress alone,
    and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
    and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood spattered on my garments,
    and stained all my apparel.”

In verse 5 He says he had to it alone because there was no one to help Him. Jesus is the only one qualified to defeat the enemy, to redeem His people, and have true victory.  Jesus was willing to take our sins onto Himself and become a sacrifice. His blood poured over us makes our garments pure and white. He defeated the enemy on that day. He redeemed us that day. When He returns all those who didn’t accept the gift of redemption from Jesus will pay for their sins with their blood. Revelation 14:20 describes the blood from the final battle this way,

“And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress, as high as a horse's bridle, for 1,600 stadia.”

That is a river of blood flowing about 187 miles long and as high as a horse’s bridle.

Victory is not ours because we are good enough. Salvation is not ours because of anything we do. Only Jesus can defeat the enemy. Only Jesus can make us righteous. Isaiah thanked the Lord for His love and mercy in verses 7-9,

“I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
8 For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
9 In all their affliction he was afflicted,
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.”

Can you catch a glimpse of the extent of God’s love for you? He took on your affliction, your sin and forgave you so that you could enjoy Him. He is compassionate. He is kind. He is merciful. This same Mighty God who one day singlehandedly will defeat the enemy in a battle that creates a river of blood, loves you with such intensity that He lived, died, and rose again just so you could know Him.

We don’t deserve Him. We don’t warrant His great kindness. We are bad. At least I know I am. I’m envious. I’m prideful. I’m ungrateful. I’m stubborn. But God, in His Holy Spirit loves me and fills me. He teaches and guides, and changes me. He saved me. He lets me share in His conquest. He makes me better, and one day He will complete the transformation of me. I don’t merit any of that! Neither do you. Verses 11-14 describe the Holy Spirit’s steadfast love and patience with us. He doesn’t give up on us. He leads us to freedom and rest even through our rebellion.

Then he remembered the days of old,
    of Moses and his people.
Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
    with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
    his Holy Spirit,
12 who caused his glorious arm
    to go at the right hand of Moses,
who divided the waters before them
    to make for himself an everlasting name,
13     who led them through the depths?
Like a horse in the desert,
    they did not stumble.
14 Like livestock that go down into the valley,
    the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
So you led your people,
    to make for yourself a glorious name.”

Remember what God has done for you. Take account of where you once were and where you are now. Then praise the Lord for His never ending perfect and great love.

Isaiah 62 Redeemed, you are God's delight. He rejoices over you! Really!

Read Isaiah Chapter 62

When you imagine God thinking about you, how do you envision His face? Do you picture Him with a stern look? Do you imagine Him with a disappointed scowl? Believer, that is not the case. His love for you is perfect and so much more than you can grasp. We do not understand the complete purity of His perfect love yet, because we are not yet perfected but God always was and always is perfect. Verses 3-4 read,

“You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
    and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
    and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
    and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
    and your land shall be married.”

That is you, He is talking about. You are like the royal jewels to God, precious, beautiful, and priceless. He doesn’t call you Desolate or Forsaken. You are covered in Jesus’ righteousness. Now He calls you My Delight. You give Him pleasure. When He thinks of you, He smiles, He laughs, and He is pleased.

No one can take away your rewards, God’s promises, or protection. No one. He is be vigilant about keeping you safe and provided for. He is staunch about ensuring you receive the rewards He has put aside for you. Verses 8-9 read,

“The Lord has sworn by his right hand
    and by his mighty arm:
“I will not again give your grain
    to be food for your enemies,
and foreigners shall not drink your wine
    for which you have labored;
9 but those who garner it shall eat it
    and praise the Lord,
and those who gather it shall drink it
    in the courts of my sanctuary.”

God adores you. He rejoices over you the way a bridegroom rejoices over His bride. (Verse 2). That is not a stoic or reserved good feeling. That is ‘can’t keep it inside’ elation, jubilation, and glee. The chapter ends with an announcement of Jesus ushering in your eternal reward. Verses 11-12 read,

“Behold, the Lord has proclaimed
    to the end of the earth:
Say to the daughter of Zion,
    “Behold, your salvation comes;
behold, his reward is with him,
    and his recompense before him.”
12 And they shall be called The Holy People,
    The Redeemed of the Lord;
and you shall be called Sought Out,
    A City Not Forsaken.”

You are redeemed and you are holy. He sought you out. He will never forsake you. Celebrate God’s deep love for you. Enjoy His fathomless exultation over you. Praise Him. Thank Him. Glorify Him.

Isaiah 61 God gives you Joy instead of Mourning

10/17/2014

Read Isaiah Chapter 61

Believer, are you somber or jubilant, serious or joyous? You have a great reason to live a life of elation.

Yesterday we read the first two verses of this chapter today we continue. Verses 1-4 read,

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins;
    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
    the devastations of many generations.”

Look back at what God has done for you. He forgave your sins, healed you, comforted you, and liberated you. These verses also say that when you mourn He replaces the ashes of mourning with a beautiful headdress and oil of gladness. When the Jewish people mourned they would put ashes on their heads, tear their clothes, and wear sackcloth to express their deep grief. And we know there is sorrow on this earth. We experience it, but the Lord comforts us now and will change it forever one day.

We will no longer mourn. We will no longer experience death. He will anoint us with His joy and in place of ashes we will have crowns. Instead of sorrow we will praise Him. We will sing and shout and proclaim His majesty forever.

Now we taste it. When you first heard about Jesus and His profound love for you, you mourned over the sins that kept you separated from God. You grieved and repented and God took your grief away. He comforted you and forgave your sins. He anointed you and sealed you with His Spirit. He made you royalty right then and there.

He changed you. All the tragedies of your life, your suffering and difficulties, He used them and remade you to into a new person. He reshaped and restored you into a gifted strong person who being changed could change the lives of others.

You don’t have to concern yourself with the trivia of daily life, what you’ll eat or drink or how you will get gas for your car or whether or not you will afford the rent. After salvation you become God’s holy minister and you concern yourself with His Kingdom and let the minutia of everyday take care of itself. Verses 5-6 describe it this way,

“Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;
    foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;
6 but you shall be called the priests of the Lord;
    they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;
you shall eat the wealth of the nations,
    and in their glory you shall boast.”

Are you living the joy of God? Or do you trudge through life filled with concern for the things of this earth? You are not meant to live that small and solemn life. God has anointed you and appointed you with joy, truth, and eternal salvation. He took away your shame, your heartache, and worry. He replaced it with His Spirit, His joy, forgiveness, and love. Celebrate the miracle of your salvation. Live the fullness of that amazing gift. Verses 10-11 read,

“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.”
