Genesis 14 Faith Enough to Give

And he (Melchizedek) blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:19-20
And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:19-20
Genesis 14
There was a massive war taking place in the area where Lot lived in Sodom. Several kings had come together and attacked the countries of other kings. Verses 1-2 list the warring factions,
In the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,2 these kings made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)
As the war continued on, the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim decided they had been oppressed for too long and joined forces to fight their enemies as one. Verses 3-12 in The Living Bible describes the long war.
These kings (of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela) mobilized their armies in Siddim Valley (that is, the valley of the Dead Sea). 4 For twelve years they had all been subject to King Chedorlaomer, but now in the thirteenth year, they rebelled.
5-6 One year later, Chedorlaomer and his allies arrived and the slaughter began. For they were victorious over the following tribes at the places indicated: the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim; the Zuzim in Ham; the Emim in the plain of Kiriathaim; the Horites in Mount Seir, as far as El-paran at the edge of the desert.
7 Then they swung around to Enmishpat (later called Kadesh) and destroyed the Amalekites, and also the Amorites living in Hazazan-tamar.
8-9 But now the other army, that of the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (Zoar), unsuccessfully attacked Chedorlaomer and his allies as they were in the Dead Sea Valley (four kings against five).10 As it happened, the valley was full of asphalt pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some slipped into the pits, and the remainder fled to the mountains. 11 Then the victors plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and carried off all their wealth and food, and went on their homeward way, 12 taking with them Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and all he owned.
The kings of Sodom, Gomorrah and their allies had at first been victorious but when they fought their main oppressor, Chedorlaomer they found themselves losing in the unfamiliar terrain. Some ran away afraid, some fell into pits, others fled to the mountains. Their enemies paid them back by raiding their cities and taking everything and anything they wanted, including people. One of those people was Lot.
But all hope was not lost, one of Lot’s servants escaped and made his way all the way back to Abram. Verses 13-16 describe what happened,
Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram.14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people.
Abram had an army of just over 300 men, I doubt they were much against the armies of Chedorlaomer and his allies but Abram had what they didn’t. He had the Lord guiding him. He divided his men and attacked at night, he not only defeated them but when they ran, he pursued, and he took back everything they stole including Lot. So Abram went to meet the king of Sodom. Verses 17-20 read,
After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley).18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

Melchizedek was the king of Salem. Salem was probably another name for Jerusalem, a city that existed long before Israel. The world Salem means peace and Jerusalem means abode of peace. Abram and Lot were not the only people on the earth who worshipped God.
Melchizedek, the king of Salem was not only a king but also a priest. He was a priest before Aaron existed, before Levi was born, and before Israel was conceived. He was a special kind of man, unique in the world at the time.
Now Abram had spoken to the Lord on more than occasion, God could easily have given him this blessing without a middle man but He chose not to. He chose to use his priest, his servant king. Sometimes speaking through His servants to one another serves a better purpose. This was one of those occasions.
Melchizedek is seen here as a type of Christ, meaning that he prophetically foreshadowed Jesus Christ. Melchizedek is one of many Christ-types seen in the Bible. It is a phrase we use to describe the revelation of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. So the King of Salem met Abram to reveal salvation.
His name proclaims Jesus. Melchizedek is a Canaanite name which means My King is God or when conjugated in Hebrew, My King is Righteousness. His title declares Jesus, king of peace. His position the King and Priest, like Jesus. His actions affirm it, Melchizedek took bread and wine. Every Believer hears bread and wine and one thing comes to mind, The Lord’s Supper, Jesus body broken for us, Jesus blood spilled for us to forgive our sins and reconcile us to the Lord. The Jewish people probably would associate the bread and wine with Passover, a feast all about Jesus’ Salvation.
In David’s Messianic Psalm 110:4 he wrote,
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

So the Lord send his royal priest to reveal Jesus. He sent Him to bless Abram in front of the King of Sodom to show him that he too could serve the Most High God and know victory and peace. God sent his servant king so that Bera king of Sodom could see Abram’s response. The second half of verse 20 reads,
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Abram had not only taken back Lot, but all of his men and possessions and many other men and all their possessions. A tenth of that was not a little something. It was Abram’s to do with what he chose. But he recognized that Melchizedek was a fellow servant of The LORD and he recognized his position as king and priest put him Melchizedek above him. He honored the king and thanked him for the blessing by giving him a small portion of the loot. Abram recognized The Lord in this man and worshipped God by giving a tithe to Melchizedek. The author of Hebrews describes it in Hebrews 7:1-3,
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,2 and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. 3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
But the king of Sodom didn’t see it as a mere 10%, he didn’t see that Abram still had 90%, he saw it as Abram giving away his stuff, his money, and mostly his power. Bera didn’t see the act of worship, he saw money being exchanged. And though he had no right to any of the money or the men, he pretended that he did. It might once have been his, but it wasn’t now. Verses 21-24 read,
And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”

Melchizedek’s blessing had declared God, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth. The blessing had made it clear it was not men or strength which had rescued Sodom’s people, it was God Most High, who had delivered Abram’s enemies into Abram’s hand. When Bera tried to be sly and pretend he was being generous and letting him have the money, Abram said, ‘God Most High is the Possessor of heaven and earth, He’s got it all, including you, me, and all these men. I don’t want any of this money because you need to know it is not you who made me rich, it is not this fight that made me rich; it is God Most High who takes care of me.’ He wanted nothing for himself, he had already been blessed by the Lord. He made sure that the armies who had fought alongside him were taken care of and let Bera keep everything else.
Sodom had a chance to be saved, but the king chose military strength and money over the Lord. Even though all his army’s power and all his money had not been enough to defeat his enemies and even though he had seen the LORD use a tiny army to defeat his enemies, he still couldn’t trust God. He was too busy trusting possessions.
Giving back to the Lord a part of what He gives us is an act of worship, a show of faith, and a testimony to people who are watching us. We can put our faith in our money. We can put our faith in laws and looking righteous or we can put our faith in God. Some people tithe, not because they trust the Lord and want to worship Him but because that is one of the rules they are taught to follow. If we give out of obligation, is it an act of worship?  When we worship by giving we are giving our money to God, when we give out of duty we are giving money to men. Although the check may be written to the same institution, God understands where your heart is when you give. He knows if you are giving it to please Him or please man. Hebrews 7:8-10 reads,
In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. 9 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, 10 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.
God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). So if you’re going to give, and I hope you are faithful enough to obey Him, then give to cheerfully to please God for the sake of Jesus Christ.

Deuteronomy 33 Part Two: The Priests’ Blessing

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” Psalm 110:4
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” Psalm 110:4
Deuteronomy 33 Verses 8-11
Today we continue reading Moses’ prophetic blessings to the tribes of Israel with the blessing to Levi. Verses 8 reads,
And of Levi he said,
“Give to Levi your Thummim,
and your Urim to your godly one,
whom you tested at Massah,
    with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah;

The Urim and Thummin are mentioned in Exodus 28:30 to describe the garments Aaron as the high priest of Israel would wear.
And in the breastpiece of judgment you shall put the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be on Aaron's heart, when he goes in before the Lord. Thus Aaron shall bear the judgment of the people of Israel on his heart before the Lord regularly.
But who is the godly one? Moses referred to the high priest, the one who would enter into the Holy of holies each year on behalf of Israel, but it also refers to Jesus, our high priest. Israel tested God with them at Massah and Meribah when they questioned if He was among them and Moses proved His presence and provision by having water spring from a rock (Exodus 17:1-7).
We are the priests and prophets now. The Lord has given us His Thummin as He gave it to Levi. The Thummin protected the high priest. It was placed over his heart and told Him the will of God as he entered into The Lord’s Presence. He has given us His Urim as He gave it to Aaron, Eleazar, and Jesus Christ. The Urim had a specific job described in Numbers 27:18-23
So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.”22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.
The Thummim and Urim showed Israel God’s will. It is described in Jewish Literature as a stone or stick which was black on one side and white on the other Thummim on one side and Urim on the other. The priest would inquire of the Lord and toss the Urim like dice, casting lots and revealing the Lord’s answer (1 Samuel 14:40-42). Priests were not all prophets and without the Spirit, this was how God’s will was revealed. The Apostles cast lots to determine who would replace Judas before they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:26).
Believers have the Thummim and the Urim, the access to know God’s will because we have The Lord actually living within us! We do not have to question His presence, He is Emmanuel God with us.
Verse 9 reads,
who said of his father and mother,
    ‘I regard them not’;
he disowned his brothers
    and ignored his children.
For they observed your word
    and kept your covenant.

In the wilderness, the tribe of Israel sided with Moses and God over Israel when Israel worshipped the golden calf. They carried out God’s command and killed their fellow Israelites in love of The Lord (Exodus 32:25-29). Following Jesus can’t be done with half a heart. He requires our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. In Matthew 10:34-39 Jesus said,
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
Levi proved they were worthy, they loved God more than they loved their relatives. They cared about the covenant they had made with the Lord and understood that loving God so fervently, even to the point of defending His Word with the sword was how Israel would be saved.
Following Jesus requires our entire being. We can’t be spilt. We are no longer part of the world concerned with worldly matters. We seek the Kingdom of God and trust God to be our provision (Matthew 6:33). We are not part of that world anymore. That is what Jesus meant when he answered people with excuses for not following him in Matthew 8:18-22.
Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
The Word of God is revealed to us, it is inscribed on our hearts and lived out in our lives. We are a royal priesthood and part of our service to God involves spreading the word, teaching it to people and thereby worshipping the Lord. Verse 10 reads,
They shall teach Jacob your rules
    and Israel your law;
they shall put incense before you
and whole burnt offerings on your altar.

Verse 10 is a concise summary of the priestly duties to teach the law, to worship and minister to the Lord through maintaining the incense, showbread and lamps, and to offer the sacrifices for forgiveness of sin. The aroma of the incense and the burnt offerings was pleasing to God. Incense represents the prayers of the people rising to God. The duties have not really changed except that now we do not make burnt offerings; we worship in Spirit and truth, we pray and offer our sacrifices of praise. Every believer can and should teach God’s word because every one of has been made part of the priesthood (Hebrews 5:12). Hebrews 13:12-16 describes our priestly responsibility of sacrifice this way,
So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Our works do not save us. They cannot earn us salvation. But our works do glorify the Lord, reveal Jesus to the world, and bring the good news of Christ to the lost. Jesus defeated the enemy forever when He rose from the dead and each time we share that, each time we love someone as Jesus loved us, and each time He is glorified it is a defeat for the devil and he loses another slave. Verse 11 says it this way,
Bless, O Lord, his substance,
    and accept the work of his hands;
crush the loins of his adversaries,
of those who hate him, that they rise not again.

Believer, you are a priest, this blessing is for you! You live in God’s presence because He lives in you. He shares His will with you. He shares His word with you. He has made righteous. You are free to love Him zealously with your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. The devil your adversary is defeated.

Psalm 21 You are a New Creation, Not Your Old Self. You are a Child of The Most High.

Psalm 21

Believer, God has made you into more than who you were before. David was a young shepherd boy but God made him into a hero and a king. You were a pauper, spiritually indigent, but The Lord has made you a king, a priest, and richly blessed as His heir. David recognized the many facets of his life that had been elevated by his faith and joy in God and he praised Him for it. We can read this Psalm and see that everything David praised God for, we can too. Verse 1 reads,

“O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices,
and in your salvation how greatly he exults!”

It is The Lord’s strength and not our own that saves us, changes us, and keeps us. We are incapable of righteousness without Jesus. We are powerless to do good without The Spirit. We are helpless to have faith without The Father. And so we do not gloat about our virtue, our power, nor our gifts. We boast in Christ, we revel in The Holy Spirit, and we glory in the greatness of The Father. No matter what we did before we were saved, nothing compares to the miracle of our new birth through Jesus. It is all garbage, because Jesus was not glorified. Paul had a lot he could brag about himself. His achievements were truly amazing. But they were nothing compared to God. 1 Corinthians 1:28-31 says,

“God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

He doesn’t just save us and leave us. He gives us good things, He is our Abba, our Papa God, The King of kings, and Lord of lords. Our Father in Heaven bestows good things on us. He blesses us. He grants our requests, and He gives us abundant and eternal life. In Matthew 7:7-11 Jesus explains it this way,

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Psalm 20 Verses 2-7 reads,

“You have given him his heart's desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
4 He asked life of you; you gave it to him,
length of days forever and ever.
5 His glory is great through your salvation;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
6 For you make him most blessed forever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved.”

Look at those verses and see the awesomeness of what God grants His beloved children, His bride the church. He made us royal when He placed that crown on our heads. For us this will happen physically when we are in Heaven, to God and so to us it has already happened. His promises are so sure that we can refer to them in past tense, even if like receiving the crowns in Heaven we have not tangibly experienced them. It is the same with eternal life. We asked and God granted us eternity.

In His redemption and our continuous and enduring transformation our lives become a testimony, a living sacrifice that glorifies God. We become His image and His ambassadors. We bring Him glory by exulting and exalting Him. And He lifts us up, He makes us more and more like Him. His Spirit shines out from us. Just as the Father looks at us and sees Jesus righteousness, so should the world look at us and see Jesus. His Holy Spirit is not meant to sit inactive and unmoving within us. He is meant to flow out of us in greatness and goodness.

We are blessed, happy and filled with joy forever, even through the worst because God is always with us, always. We can trust in the Lord. He loves us persistently, consistently, and stalwartly. He is the Most High and in our humble submission to Him, He lifts us up to a relationship with Him.

Although we should remain aware of the enemy who prowls like a hungry lion, we have nothing to fear from him. The Lord God Almighty has triumphed over him. We are in God’s loving shelter. The enemy will pay the price for his hate of us and our Lord. Verses 8-12 describe it like this,

“Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them as a blazing oven
    when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
though they devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them to flight;
you will aim at their faces with your bows.”

Satan, his minions, and his followers, and those who ignorantly follow him will be burned up with the earth when Jesus returns. They will be cast into the eternal fires of Hell because they hated Holy God and His beloved. We are safe. We are triumphant because God will avenge us. Remember though the prisoners of war, held captive by the enemy need The Deliverer, just as we needed Him.

Consider all the Lord has saved you from. He not only saved you from Hell. He delivered you from captivity to freedom. He delivered you from who you used to be to be as He meant you to be, His royal cherished beloved child, His heir. Praise Him as David praised Him. Verse 13 reads,

“Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.”

Leviticus 21 & 22 Priests Have a Higher Walk than Laymen

5/13/2015

Leviticus Chapters 21 & 22

These chapters are dedicated to the priests and how they had to keep themselves clean, even cleaner than the laymen among Israel. The rules continue through two chapters. The statutes of the priesthood say he may not make himself unclean for the dead, unless it is immediate family. He will not make bald spots or cut the edges of his beard. And He can only marry a virgin. There are a number of distinctions between the priests and the people. Chapter 21 verse 6 reads,

“They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. For they offer the Lord's food offerings, the bread of their God; therefore they shall be holy. “

The Lord has higher expectations of the priests, they are the chosen among the chosen people. They minister to Him and to the people. It is through the priest that the people could worship God and make their offerings to Him.

Today, all believers are priests and Jesus Our Savior is our High Priest. The high priest of The Old Covenant was the only one who could go beyond the veil into the Holy of Holies into the presence of God. Verses 16-23 read,

“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 “Speak to Aaron, saying, None of your offspring throughout their generations who has a blemish may approach to offer the bread of his God. 18 For no one who has a blemish shall draw near, a man blind or lame, or one who has a mutilated face or a limb too long, 19 or a man who has an injured foot or an injured hand, 20 or a hunchback or a dwarf or a man with a defect in his sight or an itching disease or scabs or crushed testicles. 21 No man of the offspring of Aaron the priest who has a blemish shall come near to offer the Lord's food offerings; since he has a blemish, he shall not come near to offer the bread of his God. 22 He may eat the bread of his God, both of the most holy and of the holy things, 23 but he shall not go through the veil or approach the altar, because he has a blemish, that he may not profane my sanctuaries, for I am the Lord who sanctifies them.”

We are born blemished by our sin nature. Just as a person has no say about the defects he is born with or incurs through trauma, we have no say over the sin nature we are born with. None of us is worthy to be the high priest. None of us is able to pay for our own sins. We are not qualified. Jesus is our High Priest and the perfect sacrifice for atonement of our sins. He was not born with a sin nature and though tempted in every way, He never sinned. His death on the cross paid the price and tore the veil that separated the people from The Lord God. His resurrection means that sin is paid for once and for all, death is conquered and the enemy is defeated. We belong to the Lord, we are sanctified by the Lord. We are not made holy with anointing oil, by the anointing of The Holy Spirit, God Himself. 1 John 2:20 reads,

“But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge”

The holy things of God, His Spirit, His Word, His knowledge and union with Him is not for Joe Schmo, who has not acknowledge Him as Lord and has not been anointed with His Spirit. These things are for His priests, the Believers who are consecrated for Him. This relationship is special. Chapter 22 verse 10 reads,

“A lay person shall not eat of a holy thing; no foreign guest of the priest or hired worker shall eat of a holy thing,”

Our walk is higher than the walk of the lost. We follow Christ. They follow their desires. We desire Christ. They desire the pleasures that satisfy their insatiable appetites. Jesus is our joy. He is enough, more than enough.

Remember who you are, Believer. You are holy, because God anointed you as holy by covering you with the blood of Jesus and by giving you His Spirit. He calls you His royal priest, His child, and His chosen. He speaks only the truth. You are a royal priest, a chosen child of The Lord God Almighty.

Leviticus 10:8-20 The Priestly Calling

5/5/2015

Leviticus Chapter 10 Verses 8-20

The Lord’s priests have a high calling over their lives. They are God’s representatives to the people. Under the New Covenant, with Jesus our Messiah as our High Priest each of His followers is a priest, anointed for God’s purposes. In verses 8-11 God explains part of the priestly mission to Aaron.

“And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying, 9 “Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, 11 and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them by Moses.”

They were to take their vocation seriously. They were to remember that the tent of meeting was a clean place and that the sanctuary was holy. It was not a place for revelry. It was a place for celebrating the Lord. Priests have an obligation to demonstrate to others the difference between holy and common. They have a responsibility to teach people who God is and what He has commanded.

Under the Old Covenant that meant teaching Israel the more than 600 laws, statutes, and requirements of the Law. Under the New Covenant that means that we have a burden to tell the world that their Father loves and wants them, that Jesus died and rose again to forgive them and make a way for them to have a relationship with God, and that The Holy Spirit wants to indwell them, transform them, and make them new. It means we must live as examples of holiness, not with affected piety, but with unity with our Father, our Savior, and our Peace, the King of kings. We are not common, we are noble, royal, and holy.

1 Peter 2:9-10 reminds us,

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Royal Priest, Holy Child of God Almighty, you are not common. You are not ordinary. You once were in the dark, but now you are in the light and you are able to proclaim his excellence and the brilliance of life in Him. There are so many wandering lost in the dark, who have no idea who they are in Christ. You Noble Servant of the Most High can reveal the truth to them, shine a light, and lead them to the Lord who loves them.

Priests have the onus to mediate atonement for sin between God and the people. Moses spoke to Aaron and his surviving sons to remind them to eat the meat and grain of the offerings given to them out of the sacrifices. While we do not have sacrifices today, we do take the bread and wine as a reminder and confirmation of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. We receive the Lord’s provision, equipment, and Word. Taking The Lord’s Supper often is a special privilege and obligation. Each time we eat the bread, we consider His body broken for us bearing our sin. Every time we drink the wine, we contemplate His blood spilled for us, cleansing us and forgiving our sin. We realize we are no longer sinners, commonplace people of the dark, and children of wrath. Now we are holy noble children of Light.

Taking The Lord’s Supper is not something done lightly. Moses exhorted Aaron and asked why he and his sons had not eaten the goat of the sin offering as they were obligated to for atonement of the people. Aaron answered him in verses 19-20.

“And Aaron said to Moses, “Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, and yet such things as these have happened to me! If I had eaten the sin offering today, would the Lord have approved?” 20 And when Moses heard that, he approved.”

Aaron, in obedience to God was not publicly or officially mourning his sons, but that didn’t change the fact that he had lost them and was grieving in his heart. He knew that this issue was something he and his other sons must deal with before they could properly eat the meat of the atonement offering.

Our sins do not negate our calling as priests, we are completely forgiven. But once realized, sins, especially sins of heart and attitude must be dealt with before we eat the bread and drink the wine of Jesus’ perfect offering to us.

1 Corinthians 11:27-32 says,

“Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.”

Believer, you are not ordinary, you are extraordinary. You are holy, royal, and chosen. You shouldn’t look or act like you did when you didn’t know who you were, when you were blind to you calling, and living in your unforgiven sin. Call yourself by a new name, Prince, Priest, and Precious.

Leviticus 8 & 9 Priests are Santified and Set Apart for a Purpose

Leviticus Chapters 8 and 9

Before Aaron and his sons could serve as priests in service to God and Israel they had to be ordained. They had to be bound for their intended office and title and given the priests’ authority in The Lord. Ordaining them and consecrating them or separating them for a holy purpose took more than just one sacrifice. First, they were ceremoniously clothed. Chapter 8 verses 5-9 describe the clothes they wore for their ordination.

“And Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing that the Lord has commanded to be done.” 6 And Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. 7 And he put the coat on him and tied the sash around his waist and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him and tied the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him, binding it to him with the band. 8 And he placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim. 9 And he set the turban on his head, and on the turban, in front, he set the golden plate, the holy crown, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

The priests had to be washed first. They had to be clean before they put on the garments God commanded for them. The ephod was a garment especially for the priests, it was made of blue, purple, and scarlet fine linen and embroidered with gold thread. It set the priest apart, it indicated that he was performing a sacred duty, and it put the responsibility of all of Israel on his shoulders. The ephod and its belt are described in Exodus 28:4-14.

“4 These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons to serve me as priests. 5 They shall receive gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen.

  1. 6 “And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen, skillfully worked. 7 It shall have two shoulder pieces attached to its two edges, so that it may be joined together. 8 And the skillfully woven band on it shall be made like it and be of one piece with it, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen. 9 You shall take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel, 10 six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the remaining six on the other stone, in the order of their birth. 11 As a jeweler engraves signets, so shall you engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel. You shall enclose them in settings of gold filigree. 12 And you shall set the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod, as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel. And Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord on his two shoulders for remembrance. 13 You shall make settings of gold filigree, 14 and two chains of pure gold, twisted like cords; and you shall attach the corded chains to the settings.”

The breastpiece was a squared inlaid with twelve precious stones, one representing each tribe. It was attached with gold rings, gold cord and blue lace and it was fit and attached with the band of the ephod. Israel was precious to God. He loved them and He made the way for them to be able to express their love of Him through the priests and the offerings.

The turban the priests wore indicted the nobility of the office, submission to The Lord as King, and authority to serve Him.

Once dressed properly and after all the altar and all the objects were consecrated with oil, the sacrifices began. First the sin offering, as repentance for the sins the priest committed. Then the burnt offering for atonement of the priest. Then the ordination sacrifice for sanctification of the priest. For seven days, Aaron and his sons remained in the tent of meeting at its entrance. And each day of those seven days the sacrifices were offered.

On the eighth day Aaron and his sons were called out of the tent and offered a sin offering and an ordination offering. Then they served the people who offered their burnt offering for atonement followed by a peace offering and a grain offering. Aaron and his sons did all these things, one by one exactly as The Lord has prescribed for each offering.

Chapter 9 verses 22-24 read,

“Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he came down from offering the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and when they came out they blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”

Aaron and his sons had been blessed by God. The seven days they spent separated from Israel in the tent of meeting were not spent playing tiddlywinks. They spent the time with The Lord in prayer and making the offerings. They were faced each day with the gore their sin caused, with the blood required for compensation to make them priests.

When they were called out on the eighth day they didn’t accept laud from the people, they served the people. They blessed the people. And God honored them and Israel by

The priests starting with Aaron and his sons and continuing through the Levitical line were set apart from the people, destined for a sacred purpose, and trained for that purpose. They were necessary for Israel to commune with the Lord. Only an ordained priest could perform the duties required to allow for peace with God.

Under the New Covenant, Jesus is our High Priest and we, His followers are priests. Jesus’ one perfect sacrifice was enough to forgive our sins, atone for our sinfulness, and ordain us for His service. We as His priests can’t keep His blessings to ourselves. We have the responsibility to tell others about the saving grace of Christ. Their names are on God’s heart and so they are on ours. We are called, sanctified, and consecrated to show God’s glory to the lost and broken. Aaron and his sons left the tent and glorified The Lord. So must we.

Leviticus 6:8-7:18 The Priviledge of the Priest and Offerings

Leviticus Chapter 6 Verse 8 – Chapter 7 Verses 1-18

These verses describe the priests’ duties and privileges regarding the various offerings we’ve learned about so far in Leviticus. The Lord had specific requirements for how the sacrifice would burn and what was done with the remnants of the animal, flour, and oil of the offering.

The burnt offering was a burning of the entire animal for the atonement of each person made yearly for the general state of sin they lived under. The priest had to ensure that the animal burnt until only ashes remained. That meant he had to keep the fire burning continually. He couldn’t allow the fire to go out and be relit. He then had to carry the ashes to a clean place. Verses 10-11 of chapter 6 read,

“And the priest shall put on his linen garment and put his linen undergarment on his body, and he shall take up the ashes to which the fire has reduced the burnt offering on the altar and put them beside the altar. 11 Then he shall take off his garments and put on other garments and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place.”

The animal had taken on the sins of the offeror. In giving it over to The Lord in death and fire, the price was being paid. But once it was burned, ashes still remained. But when The Lord forgives sin, He forgives completely. They are erased from His record. So the priest had the responsibility of removing the ashes, the vestiges of sin to a clean place. He even had to change his clothes so that the traces of sin would not sully him. The priest had been sanctified by The Lord. He was very careful about remaining clean.

When we are forgiven, it is a total forgiveness. God doesn’t hold onto our sin anymore. He chooses not to remember it. When He looks at us, He doesn’t see the sin, He sees His righteous child, His precious beloved. So why do we choose to hold onto our sins? Why do we look at ourselves and see the wrongs we’ve done? Why do we look at other people and see how they’ve hurt us or how short they are of perfection? God doesn’t see His children like that. If we have God’s heart we should look at His children with God’s vision.

All the other offerings had parts that didn’t get burned on the altar. The grain offering, sin offering, and guilt offering all gave meat, flour or cakes to the priest. This was his privilege and provision for ministering to the people and serving God. Chapter 6 verses 16-18 describe the grain offering and the priests’ privilege and obligation.

“And the rest of it Aaron and his sons shall eat. It shall be eaten unleavened in a holy place. In the court of the tent of meeting they shall eat it. 17 It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. 18 Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as decreed forever throughout your generations, from the Lord's food offerings. Whatever touches them shall become holy.”

The flour and cakes had been given to The Lord. By that distinction and merit, the food became consecrated. The bread couldn’t be ruined with leaven, which nearly always represents sin in the scripture. The priests were consecrated as well. The eating of this food was not a casual thing but a sanctified act of worship. The place they ate, the table, the plates all became sacred in this act of worship that only the priests were allowed to participate in doing.

The sin offering and guilt offering gave the priests meat when after the blood, fat, kidneys, and liver were burned. The priests had to eat the meat like the bread of the grain offering as an act of worship in the tent of meeting. It had to be eaten the same day, with some allowed the second day, but none could be eaten on the third day, that had to be burned not as an offering but to ensure that no one would eat what was now unclean. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. He didn’t linger about to decay, He conquered death and sin absolutely and finally.

Today we who belong to Christ are all priests, we are all consecrated to God’s service, and we are holy to God. We eat The Lord’s Supper or Love Feast as an act of worship. The bread and wine represent Jesus’ body and blood, broken and poured out for us. Taking the Love Feast doesn’t make us holy, it reminds us that we are holy. We have the honor of remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us. Only believers have the license to do this holy act.

Under the old covenant the priest that ate the sacred meat, breads, and cakes had to be clean. He had to deal with any uncleanness before he was allowed to eat the meal in the tent of meeting. If he didn’t do so, if he took that honor lightly and didn’t consider his own iniquitousness God would cut him off. When dealing with the peace offering, which was the offering which resulted in a fellowship meal for the people, the same rule applied. People had to deal with their uncleanness before they could touch the meal. Chapter 7 verses 19-21 read,

“Flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned up with fire. All who are clean may eat flesh, 20 but the person who eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of the Lord's peace offerings while an uncleanness is on him, that person shall be cut off from his people. 21 And if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether human uncleanness or an unclean beast or any unclean detestable creature, and then eats some flesh from the sacrifice of the Lord's peace offerings, that person shall be cut off from his people.”

Even though all our sins, past, present, and future are forgiven we are still people of flesh who sin a hundred times a day. We are imperfect and dirty, even though The Lord sees us as righteous. He made us righteous. But taking The Lord’s Supper when we are right smack in the middle of hating a brother, instigating division among the church, or causing someone to sin has serious consequences. We are not supposed to take it lightly. It is not a snack of crackers and juice, it is the remembrance of our redemption by Christ’s broken body and cleansing blood. In 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 Paul says,

“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.”

Believer, you are holy. You are precious. You are separated from the world by your priesthood. It is an honor, a special distinction and a great privilege that you can take The Lord’s Supper. It doesn’t make you holy. It is you that makes the act, the bread, the wine, and even the cup and plate holy. The act doesn’t forgive sins. It celebrates your sanctification in Christ. It is an act of worship that only the redeemed may carry out. Don’t forget the specialness of it. Never treat it lightly. It is a gift from The Lord to you, Royal Priest.

Leviticus 4 Some People Carry More Accountability for Sin than Others

4/27/2015

Leviticus Chapter 4

This chapter describes laws for sin offerings. These are different from the burnt offerings of the first chapter. Sin offerings were for unintentional sins committed and were made when the sin came to light, not yearly. Different people had to sacrifice different animals in different ways. There was no choice as in the burnt offerings.

If a priest sinned, he had to sacrifice a bull. Verses 4-7 read,

“He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord and lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before the Lord. 5 And the anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it into the tent of meeting, 6 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle part of the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the veil of the sanctuary. 7 And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the Lord that is in the tent of meeting, and all the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.”

Next the priest had to include the fat and the fatty organs with the offering, but some parts of the animal he had to take out of the camp, completely away from the people and burn separately. Verses 11-12 describe it,

“But the skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung— 12 all the rest of the bull—he shall carry outside the camp to a clean place, to the ash heap, and shall burn it up on a fire of wood. On the ash heap it shall be burned up.”

Imagine how disgusting and horrible to kill an animal in front of everyone, butcher it just so and then carry the skin, head, legs, entrails and excrement out of the camp with flies buzzing all around, the smell constantly in your nose, and the guts all over you.

The priest who shouldn’t be ignorant of the law had to admit that he was, and that because of that ignorance he had sinned. He had to tell everyone, as is the case for each of the situations in Leviticus Chapter 4. The sinner had to admit his sin to everyone as the first step of forgiveness. The act of repentance and sacrifice was done in front of the whole assembly. The priest’s sins were considered the most grievous and his sacrifice had to be carried out by him alone.

The next sin described is the unintentional sin committed by the entire congregation. Perhaps everyone was doing something that the Lord had forbidden under the law, when they realized it, they brought a bull from the herd and the elders as representatives for the assembly laid their hands on it as it was killed. And once again the priest was given the duty of carrying the rest of the bull out of the camp. The elders had a responsibility to shepherd the assembly and the priest had an obligation to ensure the group knew and followed the law. So they had to take the fault and burden of the sin.

If one of the leaders committed an unintentional sin, then when that sin was brought to light he had to bring a male goat without blemish. This sacrifice is described in verses 22-26.

“When a leader sins, doing unintentionally any one of all the things that by the commandments of the Lord his God ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt, 23 or the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish, 24 and shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering. 25 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering. 26 And all its fat he shall burn on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings. So the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven.”

This sacrifice is of a much smaller animal, but still a valuable one. And there is no carrying the remainders of the corpse outside the city. Additionally once the leader has placed his hand on the head of the goat and killed it, it was the priest who then made atonement for the sin of the leader in order for God to forgive him. The priest is always the one who stands in between man and God. The priest spills the blood in order for God to absolve the sin.

Next the sacrifice for the common man is described. He could bring either a female goat, or a female lamb to be sacrificed in order for the priest to make atonement and God to forgive him.

Unintentional sin happens. Sometimes we are ignorant or we don’t use discernment. Under the law they happened often. There were so many laws to follow that a person couldn’t possibly know and keep each one of them perfectly. But God didn’t require payment of those sins until the person or people became aware of them. Once the sin was realized, God expected public repentance and payment.

It wasn’t public so that the person would feel deeper shame. It was open so that everyone could learn from it. If the leader didn’t know that memorializing a passed loved one was a sin, it is likely that many in the community didn’t know it either. Now they would all know it. It also gave them accountability. They could look out for one another and keep an eye out for repeated offenses.

Jesus gave up His life to pay for our sins all of them, regardless of when or why, whether they were sins of commission or omission, great or small. His sacrifice was the ultimate perfect offering, once and for all.

While all sin is sin, some people carry more of an obligation than others not to sin. Under the law, the onus was on the priest first, then the leaders and lastly on the rest of the congregation. Under grace believers are all priests. We all have direct access to Holy God. We have His awesome Spirit to guide us, teach us, and mold us. But the world doesn’t have the same obligation. They live under sin. The sins of the lost don’t count against them if they don’t know they are sinning. They still have to pay the final price for their sin. But asking a lost person to stop sinning doesn’t make sense. Making him aware of his sinful state, and telling him about Jesus does make sense. Once he understands he is a sinner, then he can ask Jesus to cover him with His blood. We can bring them The Light, but until then, our sin is counted as greater than theirs. But Jesus, our High Priest made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He atoned and we are completely forgiven once and for all.

Still elders, pastors, and teachers face more accountability than others. They are in a position of leadership. As we mature, we should be able to lead people closer to Christ, not teach them to sin. James 3:1 puts it like this,

“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”

We no longer live under the law. We do not keep the law in order to be saved and know God. We live righteously as a result of following Christ and the indwelling of His Spirit in us. We love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. Because we love Him with our entire being, we love others tangibly. Loving others is how we love God and the supernatural response of our love for God and His love for us.

Leviticus 2 You are a Sugar-Free, Yeast-Free Salty Offering to The Lord

4/25/2015

Leviticus Chapter 2

This chapter looks at grain offerings, in some Bible translations it is called the meat offering. Meat doesn’t mean animal flesh, it means meal. This offering was not for sin, but to show devotion to The Lord and to remember His grace, love, and provision. Israel received this law while they were still wandering in the desert, they were no longer in Egypt where wheat and corn was plentiful. They were not yet in Canaan where crops would be abundant. They were in the desert, living off of manna and the occasional quail. It made the grain offering that much more precious and therefore more sacrificial. Verses 1-3 read,

“When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it 2 and bring it to Aaron's sons the priests. And he shall take from it a handful of the fine flour and oil, with all of its frankincense, and the priest shall burn this as its memorial portion on the altar, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 3 But the rest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the Lord's food offerings.”

Only a portion of the offering was burned on the altar. That portion was a pleasing aroma to God. The rest was given to Aaron and his sons, and in the future to the priests who would be administrating the offering. It was for their provision. In thanking God for His grace, the people took care of the priests. In this way the priests could be completely devoted to their responsibilities, serving God and His people.

Not every grain offering was raw, often it was cooked and then offered. And there were laws covering the different variations of cooking the grains into cakes. Verses 4-10 describe the variations and include oven, griddle, and pan. In each case oil is included with the offering and a portion is burned to be a pleasing aroma to The Lord and the remainder is given to the priests.

There was work involved in the offering regardless of how it was brought to the altar. This was the valued food of the offeror. He had to grind the wheat or other food into a fine flour. He then had to mix it, form it, cook it, and prepare it. Before giving his meal to The Lord.

How often do we read in the Bible of visitors to someone’s home and the owner of the home gets to work immediately making cakes for the visitor? It was something they did to honor their guest, to be hospitable and meet needs. In 1 Kings 17 when Elijah met the Widow of Zarephath, who was about to use the very last of her barley meal and oil to make one last meal for her son and herself before they died, Elijah instructed her to use it to make him a meal instead. She did as the prophet told her. She sacrificed the last of what she had to bless The Lord, who she only knew about. The Lord honored her gift by making more meal appear in the jar, and by feeding her and her son for the rest of their lives. Elijah lived with the woman for two years and through that time he no doubt taught her about God and she became closer to Him.

But the cakes couldn’t just be any cakes. The offeror had to make them with certain specifications. There were ingredients God didn’t want. Verses 11-12 read,

“No grain offering that you bring to the Lord shall be made with leaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey as a food offering to the Lord. 12 As an offering of firstfruits you may bring them to the Lord, but they shall not be offered on the altar for a pleasing aroma.”

The cakes couldn’t include yeast or honey. Although honey was acceptable in a first fruits offering even then they would not be burned on the altar. Leaving out the leaven was reminiscent of Passover. Leaven had become a symbol of sin, of foulness entering and sullying purity.

It is not explained why honey couldn’t be included. These are my thoughts on the subject, my best guess. Honey would sweeten the cake. And The Lord didn’t want sweet cake, He wanted a savory meal with a pleasing savor to reach Him. Adding honey to the cakes would mean that they wouldn’t last as long. They could spoil and be of no use to the priests. Burning the honey might cause it, like the yeast to ferment and change the makeup of the meal being offered.

There was also an ingredient that God said had to be included. Verse 13 says,

“You shall season all your grain offerings with salt. You shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be missing from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.”

Salt was also a precious commodity. And adding it to every offering reminded the offeror of God’s covenant with him. Today salt remains a reminder of God’s promises to us. Although we do not do grain offerings at an altar, our lives are living sacrifices to the Lord. Romans 12:1-2 reads,

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

As believers, we live our lives as worship to God. We are the salt of the world. We are the flavor and the aroma of our lives is what pleases God. In Matthew 5:6 Jesus told us,

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.”

Just as salt reminded Israel of God’s awesome grace, we are to walk with grace, standing out from the world so that they will see God. Colossians 4:2-6 read,

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

Is your life a living sacrifice to the Lord? Do your offerings to Him take care of and edify the church, your fellow priests in the ministry of Christ? Are your offerings seasoned with salt? Are they unleavened by sin?

Grain offerings didn’t atone for sin. There was no blood involved. They were a reminder for the giver of God’s awesome grace. They were a symbol of love and devotion to The Lord. When we walk as living sacrifices to Him, it doesn’t make us any more righteous, it doesn’t erase sin. Jesus’ blood did that. What it does do is glorify God. It reflects The Lord and allows the world see Him when they look at us. Our conformity to Christ and subsequent nonconformity to the world allows the lost to peek at the Mystery of the Gospel. It is how they will come to know Him. Like the widow gave all she had to Elijah and never ran out of barley, we can give all we have to others and never run dry. We are free to give generously. We are free to be completely devoted to God and the ministry of our spiritual gifts to one another and the lost.

As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
