Are all Apostles, Prophets, or Teachers?

At our church service we were asked to contemplate the question Paull raised in 1 Corinthians 12:29-30.
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
I know what I think my answer to this question is, but I want to answer it with scripture and not my own flawed opinions or knowledge. The first thing one must do to answer the question is to put it back into context. 1 Corinthians 12 talks about the gifts of the Spirit and about the body of Christ. Looking at verses 12-26 which immediately precede the question, we see that we are all members of the body and like the body, not everyone can be the mouth or the head or the foot. That is why we have a variety of gifts, we all have a purpose in the body. There is someone at your church gifted at teaching, someone else gifted at pastoring, and someone different gifted at prophecy, healing, and administration. We need the variety of gifts. So, no not all are apostles, prophets teachers, healers etc. But, is this the end of it? No, there is more to consider.
Regarding the gifts, in verses 4-11 Paul says,
 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
This passage says that to one this is given to another this is given. Paul also says, “All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.” This implies that not everyone has every gift. But what the Spirit really called to my attention in this section was verse 6, “and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.”
You see God in the Holy Spirit gives these gifts to each one as He wills, the same Spirit empowers them all in everyone. This is not a contradiction, He gives as He wills and He gives to everyone. He is able to do as He wills or chooses. God gives good gifts to His children who ask Him. (Matthew 7:11) and whatever we ask for in His name or in agreeance with one another and with faith we will receive (Matthew 18:19, Matthew 21:22, Mark 11:24, John 15:7, John 15:16, and more). So just as God wills that all are saved, the scriptures infer that God wants to give everyone gifts and blessings.
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:31 just after he poses the question, “But earnestly desire the higher gifts.”
What this means to me is that the Holy Spirit gives gifts to everyone, but we can ask for more, we can ask for all of them. Do all? No. Can all if we ask? Yes. Will He give those gifts to us when we ask? The answer is yes but with qualifiers. Yes, He gives whatever we ask Him for in His name, that is as His representative. He gives when we ask in agreeance with other saints, we would not agree for something evil. And He gives when we ask with faith. James explains this in James 1:5-6 when he talks about asking for the gift of wisdom,
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
This passage has given many a charlatan reason to explain why people are not healed by him or why people did not get the new Lexus they asked for. But what James is saying is that if you ask for wisdom (or some other gift) you must ask with faith because otherwise you would not listen to God for the wisdom or use the gift you asked for because you don’t really believe He gave it to you. You are double minded therefore hoping He gave it but not trusting He did. You would wait for some miracle to happen and empower you in a shimmering shower of gold or a gust of wind to hit you and make you suddenly sprout wise sayings or tongues or lightning to shoot from your hands and cause healings all around you. Without that faithful assurance, you will follow whatever speaker, teacher, or pastor gives you some teaching that tells you the steps you have to take to have the gifts that the Bible says God has already given you. With faith, you ask and then, knowing God gave you the gift, you use it. You listen for the wisdom, the word, or the knowledge. You step out in faith and declare healing or miracles in Jesus’ name.
God would not tell you to desire the higher gifts if He were not going to give them to you when you ask. He would not tell us to ask for them if He were not going to give them to us. Perhaps, you have asked for a gift and have not seen it manifested. Maybe it isn’t time yet for you to get it. Maybe you need to take a step or two first. One thing many of us don’t consider doing is having the gift ignited by prayer and laying on of hands from elders or others already anointed and using the gift. In 2 Timothy 1:5-7 Paul reminds Timothy to do this. He says,
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Paul knew Timothy had faith, that was not the issue, He wanted the elders of the church to lay their hands on Timothy and fan into flame the gift of God that was in him. How was the gift in Timothy? Paul had laid his hands on Timothy when he prayed for the Holy Spirit to indwell him. He reminded Timothy that we have a spirit of self-control, not fear. We can choose through our self-control to practice these gifts or we can choose to let fear rule us and not practice them in case we do not have the gift.
If God wants someone healed, He will heal Him through you or the guy next to you or the woman who meets the person next. He is the same Holy Spirit in you, your pastor, the person famous for his healing gift, and the person in your church who is gifted with it. He is the same Spirit in you as the person gifted with prophecy or knowledge or teaching. in your body. The same Holy Spirit who indwelled and empowered Paul, Peter, John, and James indwells you, Believer.
We must also practice the gifts we were given. We cannot and should not let them sit unused within us. That does no one any good, not us and not the people learning from us or watching us. In 1 Timothy 4:14-16 Paul said,
Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
Earlier in the letter Paul in 4:7-8 Paul told Timothy  “Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” Encouraging him that just as we train our physical bodies we should train our spirits as well.
Let’s go back to Paul’s question now, “Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?” No, all are not, but it could be that way. We can operate in all the gifts, if we ask with faith, if we declare this in front of the body and let the elders lay hands on us to impart the anointing and fan the gift into flame, if in faith we step up and practice and use the gifts, knowing it is the Holy Spirit, not us who is wise, healing, miracle working, speaking, encouraging, and loving. We must remember too that Paul went on from that question to tell us the better way, the way of love. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that without love, none of the amazing things we do is worth anything. If we do these great things without love we are nothing and gain nothing. These gifts, our faith and our hope are all part of this temporary earth. Prophecies will one day be in the past. There will be no need of healing or encouragement because we will be living in perfect unity with Jesus Christ in New Jerusalem on the New Earth forever. God will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain. Earth and all its brokenness and sin will have passed away (Revelation 21:4)

More than Conquerors

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
Recently in church, my friend and pastor Jim Barringer challenged me with his thought that he for one couldn’t wholly comprehend the phrase “we are more than conquerors.” He asked the congregation if any of us really understood it. I decided I would come to understand it as much as possible, not with Christianese sayings like “victorious life” but with truth from the Scriptures and God’s Holy Spirit. Understanding that God’s Word is a treasure more precious than the most beautiful and perfect diamond, multifaceted, and offering something deeper each time we peer into it, I can only offer a small peek. The Word of God is alive, it is active, and it breathes life through the Holy Spirit as He helps us understand it (Hebrews 4:12). So let’s get ready to bring this phrase alive and live as more than conquerors.
I know I don’t spend most of my time living as a conqueror. The times I am not living as a conqueror, I live either fighting tooth and nail or wallowing in defeat. But Believer, that is not what our Lord means for us!
First, I needed to look at the phrase in context. Romans 8:31-39 reads,
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
According to this passage we are more than conquerors, in tribulation, that is troubles and suffering, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword.
Let’s now take a moment to define the word conqueror. Other words for conqueror are defeater, vanquisher, subjugator, captor or victor. To conquer means to gain or acquire by force of arms :  subjugate  to overcome by force of arms :  vanquish  >  to gain mastery over or win by overcoming obstacles or opposition :  to overcome by mental or moral power :  surmount and: to be victorious
There is one Greek word, used only this once for the entire phrase “more than conquerors.” That word is hupernikaó the first part of that word huper means beyond or exceedingly, the second part of the word nikáō is conqueror, or outstanding best conqueror. The phrase is then to be someone who conquers exceedingly and completely. Strong’s Greek Lexicon puts it this way:
being "more than a conqueror," i.e. "super-conqueror" who is "completely and overwhelmingly victorious" 5245 (hypernikáō) is used only in Romans 8:37.
[The intensive prefix (hyper) adds the idea, "surpassing victory" (i.e. of a pre-eminent conqueror).
But how are we more than conquerors? First let’s look a little further back in Romans 8. The chapter begins with this beautiful and awe-inspiring truth about believers. Romans 8:1-4 reads,
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, in fulfilling the law (what we cannot do), forgiving and taking away sin, and overcoming death to give us life, we cannot be accused of sin or condemned by it. Our sin is gone and we have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 says it like this,
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
When we face the tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword spoken about in Romans 8:35 we as believers do not face it alone or in the same way the world does. We have a different outlook on those sufferings. First, we are indwelled with God’s Holy Spirit, God in us! We have God’s nature living within us and He makes a difference. 1 John 4:1-7 reads,
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
Read verse 4 again,
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
We have overcome the lying spirits, the false prophets, the slaves of the enemy who want to bring us down and make us ineffectual and otherwise defeat us. He (God) is in us and He is greater than Satan.
We understand that all the bad stuff, the suffering, and the evil in this world is here because of sin. We understand that God is sovereign and though He will not take away people’s free will to stop them from sinning, He does use it all for our benefit. Romans 8:28-30 says,
 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

You and I, Believer love God and we are called according to His purpose! He works it all out for our benefit. Yes, we will suffer, we will be hated and persecuted, and tragedy will happen but God uses it for our good, to make us more like Jesus, to conform us to His image. Earlier in Romans, Paul described the way believers endure suffering. He said that we can rejoice or celebrate our suffering! That is insane and foolish to the world. But for us, it makes sense because we have the truth, we know the good result even in the depth of agony. Romans 5:1-5 reads,
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
We are perfected in God’s profound everlasting and steadfast love. 1 John 4:7-12 reads,
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
One day, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be transformed completely, glorified perfectly to spend eternity in perfect communion with the LORD. That future glory is as good as done. Holding onto that hope through faith is one way we endure suffering differently than the world. Paul said it like this in Romans 8:18-21,
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
We can consider it finished, we are justified, we are glorified, and we are perfected. These words are all past tense even though the glory and perfection will happen in the future.  They are present tense for us because as we go through suffering they are being done. They are past tense for us because we have faith that God’s Word is true and He described our victory already. It is done even though for us, it has not yet manifested.  The Bible tells us a great deal about The Day of the Lord. Revelation 21 is a chapter we can read and read again when we are feeling defeated, tired of fighting, or overcome by circumstances. It is an emboldening truth and it is where our hope and faith rest, the future glory Paul speaks about in Romans. Revelation 21:1-7 reads,
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people] and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
Isn’t that beautiful? Believer, will you conquer? Yes! Remember you are more than a conqueror! But not everyone will conquer, the world is filled with people who reject Christ, who will not believe, or have never heard the truth. The end of their story is not victory and life but defeat and death. It is described in detail throughout the Bible. The Day of the Lord has two sides, the conquering side and the defeated side. Revelation 21:8 reads,
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.
In Mark 9:48 Jesus described Hell “where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”
It is not only the lost who will be thrown into the lake of fire, it is Satan and His minions. He will not be happily ruling, he’ll be tortured and burning, and gnashing his teeth right along with all the rest. He will be completely conquered. Revelation 20:7-10 describes it this way,
And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

So Brothers and Sisters, what does it mean to live as more than a conqueror? It means to go through this life believing the truth, Satan is captured, Sin and Death are destroyed, Suffering is ended, and we are completed and living eternally in perfect communion with Jesus Christ. It means walking in faith. Jim Barringer defines faith as the persistent refusal to accept what appears to be reality. In other words trusting God instead of the our own work, circumstances of our lives, and the appearance that we are losing to Satan. The Bible defines faith in Hebrews 11:1-3.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Keep Praying! Ask, Seek, and Knock Persistently.

And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. Luke 11:9 on photo of Rainbow in Bright Blue Sky
And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. Luke 11:9
Are you waiting on something you desire from your Good Father? Are you trying to hold on to confidence though it has been such a long time? You are not alone. I’ve been praying for healing for years. I’ve only gotten more ill. Recently, I gave up. I just couldn’t take keeping the hope anymore because it hurts so much when that hope is dashed. I lost faith for a little while. But God reminded me not to give up. Jesus told us more than once to keep praying.
Luke 11:5-13 reads,
And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Too many of us have a hard time understanding how very profoundly, completely, and personally God loves us and just how very good He is. We can’t grasp it because we base our understanding of Him on the people we know in our lives, our dads, our employers, and other authority figures. But they are broken. They are not as good as God. We are imperfect. Jesus knew that, so He asked us to look at how we, even in our imperfection respond to a friend or a child. Then He went further and compared how even evil people will do good things if we keep asking.
Luke 18:1-8 says
And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself,‘ Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?  I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

The Lord loves you and His love isn’t marred by imperfections, selfishness, or pride. God’s love is perfect because He is Love! (1 John 4:8). God loves you and He doesn’t want you to give up. Please don’t. Just keep asking, seeking, and knocking. Want it desperately! Want Him desperately. Want Him the way a thirsty animal desires water. That animal knows it needs water to exist and it does whatever it must to find that water. Life is not always sunshine and roses, sometimes it is storms and thorns. But if we know who our Father is, we know He is good and He will give us the desires of our hearts when we delight in Him (Psalm 37:4). We think on the goodness and love of God and we know the hope of our future.
Psalm 42:1-4 reads,
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
    so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
    for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
    as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
    and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
    a multitude keeping festival.

Verses 7-8 of that Psalm read,
Deep calls to deep
    at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
    have gone over me.
By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
    and at night his song is with me,
    a prayer to the God of my life.

And verse 11 says,
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

How many times did Jesus say whatever we ask, would be given or done? John 14:13 reads,
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
That sentiment is repeated in Matthew 18:19, Matthew 21:22, Mark 11:24, John 15:7; John 15:16; John 16:23-24; James 1:5-6; James 1:17; 1 John 3:22; and 1 John 5:14-15. Jesus was insistent and tireless in getting this message across to us. Keep praying and do not give up hope. Have faith, people are watching us and how we respond to our difficulties. Our lives could glorify the Lord and lead them to salvation in Jesus Christ. We also understand that God is Sovereign, Good, Faithful and True. Don’t give up! Hang in there.

1 Thessalonians 3 Your Life is a Testimony and an Encouragement

Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11
Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11
1 Thessalonians 3
Today, I am going to return to Paul’s first letter to the church at Thessalonica and our regular routine of devotionals until at least we finish this book.
Your life is a testimony. Do you know what that means? When we talk about your life being a testimony it means that the way you live, respond, and behave, and what you choose to do affects people around you and shows your faith more clearly than merely your words. Do you know how much your life lived as a testimony can encourage the brothers and sisters around you? I have experienced that, especially lately.
Paul wanted very much to visit the church and see how himself how they were doing, but he was unable to so he sent Timothy. Verses 1-5 read,
Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left behind at Athens alone, 2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, 3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. 4 For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. 5 For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.
Timothy’s life had a great impact on people. His faith and perseverance was a great comfort to Paul. He knew he could trust this man because Timothy proved his trust worthiness in how he lived. Paul described Timothy as “our brother.” He meant that clearly Timothy’s life was a testimony to Jesus Christ. No one could question his salvation. He meant that they were united and together with the church a family with God as Father. Ephesians 4:23-25 reminds us we are new and belong to one another.
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Paul called Timothy “God’s coworker” not just his partner or a fellow worker to the church but God’s coworker. When we are pursuing God’s will, when we are fulfilling the great commission, we are working with The LORD. God’s will is for our sanctification, that all people be saved, and that we have a genuine relationship with Him (1 Thessalonians 4:3, 2 Peter 3:9, Hosea 6:6). We are going about our Father’s business. Have you ever considered yourself that way? We are family and we are partners and collaborators with God! And Timothy’s life proved that unity of Spirit and purpose.
It is not only our lives lived as individuals that encourages others, but our lives lived as the church that encourages. Verses 6-10 read,
But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you— 7 for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. 9 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith?

Both as individuals and the body we need to remember one another. Not simply think of others but act on those thoughts, reach out, make a phone call, drop an email, send a text or a message, or visit. Paul sent Timothy to Thessalonica and the Thessalonians sent their regards and thoughts to Paul. While I was recently absent and unable to do these devotionals I had people reach out to me and it was so encouraging to know I was loved and cared about. People called me, visited me and wrote me messages to check on me. there were times when those texts, calls or visits came at times when I desperately needed the comfort. You, my brothers and sisters and coworkers with God answered the call of the Holy Spirit and I thank you. This is something I hope and strive to do and I hope that we all try to do more intentionally.
Standing fast in the Lord as the Thessalonians did can also be a comfort and encouragement to people. First, let me clarify what standing fast in the Lord means. It means to firmly remain, to hold your position, or persevere and refuse to be defeated. So it means we are not giving into temptation, letting difficulty and pain overwhelm us, or allowing circumstances to falter us. How can that be an encouragement to others? 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 says,
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
When I see your faith remain in the face of hardship, I see what the Lord is doing for you and in you and that reminds me of what He can do for me. I met someone recently who went through a horrific ordeal. She was of course shaken and hurt but she was still faithful. While I was supposed to be comforting her, she was encouraging me and she had no idea. Her faith bolstered mine and mine bolstered hers. I know so many people who are suffering terribly, yet they stand fast. They are models for me to follow. They are inspirations to keep walking the walk myself.
We give thanks for each other. As we pray throughout the day, we remember one another and give thanks to God for each other. This is one way we pray for each other but it is another way that God increases our joy and strengthens our faith. As I thank God for each of you, I am reminded I am not alone. I am part of a body, part of the church, and a member of a family.
Why do we do this? Verses 11-13 read,
Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

The more we live as a testimony to Christ, the more our love will grow for each other and the world. We will grow the Kingdom of God that way. People will take note of that awesome love which is so different from anything the world knows and they will want to be a part of it. John 13:34-35 says it this way,
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
Not only that but as our love abounds, we become more conformed to the image of Christ, which means we become sanctified, purified like Jesus and we will be ready for that wonderful day when Jesus returns. 2 Thessalonians 3:3-5 reads,
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.4 And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Believer, are you living your life as a testimony? Are you living as a member of this family and a coworker of God? Are you standing fast? Is your love growing day by day?

Genesis 22:1-19
Whether you think so or not God does send us tests. The tests are not so that He will know how we will do, they are so that we will know ourselves better. He doesn’t send us tests in order for us to fail, He sends them to build our faith and make us into the perfect image of Christ. James 1:2-4 says it like this,
 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
God tested Abraham’s faith as well. Verses 1-3 read,
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
He had waited years to have his son Isaac. He had to give up Ishmael, the son provided by his own effort and not God’s promise. He had waited and grown old and finally the promise he waited on for so many years was fulfilled. He probably loved Isaac more than he could imagine loving a child. He envisioned his son’s future as he birthed nations and kings. God needed Abraham to know where his heart was and where it could be so that he would raise Isaac as a father of faith.
His response was immediate, “Here I am.” He didn’t ask God what he wanted before he responded, he was there, ready, and waiting for God’s word. And Abraham didn’t hesitate in doing as God had told him to do. He rose up early and took two men, Isaac, and the wood and left for the mountain in Moriah. Abraham knew that God had promised him that Isaac would become many nations. So though God told him to sacrifice his son, Abraham knew that he could obey and God would still somehow keep His promise. In the past, Abraham had doubted God’s word from time to time. Perhaps he might doubt it again in the future. The Lord wanted to show Abraham that he could trust Him enough to obey Him and never doubt or worry. With that knowledge Abraham probably wouldn’t doubt much in the future.
I try to imagine what that journey was like for Abraham. It had to have been difficult. He couldn’t scare his son by telling him. He couldn’t lighten his burden by sharing it with his servants. He had to walk toward a mountain knowing that when they reached the destination, he would have to kill Isaac, his only son. Did he savor every moment with his son? Did he pray throughout the journey for God to change His mind and give them something else to sacrifice? Or was he more stoic, accepting the terrible situation as it was? All we know is, Abraham trusted God to keep His word and he was willing to give His only son to God because he loved God so very much. Verses 4-10 read,
On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

I love the similarity in conversations between Isaac and Abraham and Abraham and God. Clearly Abraham loved his son deeply. His answer to Isaac is so similar to his answer to God, “Here I am, my son.” When Isaac asked where the sacrifice was, Abraham’s faith was exhibited beautifully when he answered, Isaac, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” He wasn’t telling his son a lie in order to keep him from being afraid, Abraham knew that he could trust God.
Abraham’s agony reminds me of Jesus praying in the garden before his arrest and crucifixion. He begged the Father to spare Him, but He knew that He couldn’t be spared. He knew that He was the salvation of the world and had to lay His life down (Matthew 26:39-42). Unlike Jesus, Abraham knew that somehow God would spare Isaac. The moment had come and God had not provided a way out of yet. Abraham’s hand held the knife and he was about to plunge it into his son. Verses 11-12 read,
 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

The angel of the Lord is God the Savior Jesus. He called to Abraham and Abraham answered again, “Here I am.” I would guess he was overwhelmed with joy to hear his Lord’s words this time, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”  God spared Isaac and provided another sacrifice in his place. Verses 13-14 read,
 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

Then God blessed Abraham by reiterating His promise. God knew long before Abraham was Abraham, that he would “pass the test.” He knew that He could make His promise and that Abraham would be faithful to it. He made the promise then and He repeated it after the sacrifice. Verses 15-19 read,
And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

God promised Abraham a son and descendants like the stars and the sand. Abraham believed and it was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). What Abraham went through is also a reminder of faith for us. God promised you salvation and eternal life and when we believed it was counted to us as righteousness. Ephesians 1:11-14 reads,
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Abraham showed his love for God by sacrificing his only son. God showed His love to Abraham by sparing Isaac. God showed His love for us by sacrificing His only Son, by providing the lamb necessary to pay the price for our sin (Romans 5:8). He didn’t spare His own Son because His love for us is so deep. We can trust in the promise of salvation, in our perfect transformation in eternity because we know God loves perfectly and keeps His word.
Whatever test you may go through remember this, God is sending it to you so you can pass it and be strengthened and become more like Him. He wants good for you, not bad. Tests are not punishment, they are not made for you to fail. Tests are gifts, opportunities for blessings, and reasons to rejoice. Romans 8:32 reads,
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

Genesis 20 God’s Promises and Your Salvation Depend on God Not You

So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. Romans 9:16
So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. Romans 9:16
Genesis 20
Isn’t awesome how God takes our chief weakness, our biggest flaw, or our greatest struggle and turns it into our chief strength, biggest gift, or greatest blessing? Although Abraham is remembered as a man of great faith, he was far from perfect and one of his reoccurring issues was a lack of faith, a tendency to depend on himself instead of God when he feared something. That was the case when he moved to live for a little while in Gerar. He was faced with a familiar problem, protecting himself and his beautiful wife in a foreign country. And as he had done in Egypt, he did now; he lied and told the people she was his sister. Abraham’s lack of faith was affecting other people. Verses 1-7
From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.” 4 Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people? 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 Now then, return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Abimelech did what was customary for his people, he saw a beautiful woman that he wanted and took her. Whether customary or not, in ignorance or not taking someone against their will is a sin. The king took Sarah but the Lord protected her, her offspring, and Abimelech by warning him what he was about to do and what the consequences of that act would be. The king responded quickly. Verses 8-13 read,
So Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?” 11 Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, ‘There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ 12 Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. 13 And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

Abraham may have felt like the excuse that the brother sister thing wasn’t totally a lie made it okay. But the truth is their relationship was husband and wife not brother and sister. It was the hiding of their marital relationship which was the lie and the sin. It was Abraham’s reliance on people and his assessment of their condition which was the sin. Abimelech had a right to know the truth. If he had, he might not have taken Sarah. Abraham should have trusted God enough to protect them regardless of what he thought of the people, especially in the light that God had promised that within the year she would give birth to a son. Imagine if Abimelech had slept with Sarah, Isaac’s paternity might forever be questioned by Abraham and by us. God was not going to allow that to happen. Abraham’s lack of faith put Abimelech and all of Gerar in grave danger. But God chose to show His awesome power to the king, not through his prophet Abraham as it should have been but by speaking to the king. Abimelech was angry as he had every right to be but he heeded the Lord who still protected Abraham regardless of his faith. Verses 14-18 reads,
Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.” 16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.” 17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children. 18 For the Lord had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

God’s steadfast love doesn’t depend on our faith, our effort, or our righteousness. We don’t have our own righteousness (Philippians 3:9), so why would we expect our effort to be good are enough? He promised that He is our God and He would always be with us (Deuteronomy 31:8). Even when Abraham sinned, God still loved him and protected him and the promise He had made. That is not an excuse to keep sinning, it is the reason to want to be more righteous. It’s not a defense to forget faith and run around depending on yourself, it is the motivation to be more faithful and depend on God.
Abimelech could have kept blaming Abraham and Sarah but his encounter with the Lord allowed him to take responsibility and make amends for his own sin as well as forgive Abraham. When he did that, Abraham was moved to pray for the king and his household. And in his prayers, Abraham had to see that God had protected Sarah all along and that the entire house had been made barren and impotent over the situation. He also got to demonstrate God’s mercy to Abimelech and restore his health as his sign of forgiveness.
Believer, God promised you salvation. He isn’t going to abandon you because you aren’t doing well enough or making mistakes. He is going to keep working on you and in you as you submit to Him. He is going to turn your greatest struggles into your greatest assets. He is preparing you for the Day of the Lord and the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. He is protecting you. Your salvation is promised. 1 Peter 1:3-7 reads,
 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Genesis 19:30-38 Faith or Flesh Lot’s Daughters’ Choice

for we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (on a photo of Erik Weihenmayer on Mt. Everest by James Q Martin)
Genesis 19:30-38
Lot had escaped Sodom to Zoar but as the lone survivors of the destruction of the wicked cities, he was afraid to stay there. Instead he and his two daughters lived in a cave. Lot may have been okay with the situation but his daughters were not. They had both been engaged, preparing to start lives as wives and looking forward to becoming mothers, but now they were alone in a cave with their dad and his fear affected them. Verses 30-32 describe their desperation.
Now Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.”
These two women had been raised by a righteous man, but their mother was not so righteous. They had been raised in a city so evil that the people thought nothing of gang rape and thought that it was wrong of Lot to try and protect the victims. Lots daughters were faced with a dilemma and a choice of how to handle that problem. They could have prayed to the Lord and asked Him to send them husbands. They could have cried out to Him for an answer. But they didn’t have the faith to see past their own fears and see the hope. They were each one of three survivors of the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Rather than see themselves as survivors, or see the hope of what their saved lives could mean, they focused on what that terrible experience meant for their fleshly desires. They came up with a plan to fix their problems. They decided to rape their father and take what they wanted. Verses 33-35 read,
So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
34 The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.” 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
Rape is rape, whether the victim is a man or a woman, whether he was drunk or sober, aware or not aware, rape is a terrible violation of a person. It is the epitome of hate. These women were alive only because their father was a good man and God had mercy on him. They were alive because God allowed them to be saved. But they couldn’t acknowledge that or trust that if God had saved them, He most certainly was not going to leave them alone in a cave forever. Rather than be thankful to God and to Lot and use their new lives for good, they hated enough to violate their father in the most despicable manner possible. The plan worked, they got what they wanted. Verses 36-38 read,
Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
They had no shame over their sin, they proudly displayed what they had done by naming their sons with the banner of their sin. Moab sounds like Hebrew for ‘from father” or more closely “the waters of father” and Ben-amni means son of my people. Their mothers showed no repentance for their terrible deeds. And the descendants of Lot’s sons would become prideful evil nations.
The Moabites were pagans known for their obscene worship of the gods Chemosh and Baalpeor. They overwhelmed a race of giants called the Emin but were later dispossessed from that land by Israel. They would give us Ruth who forsook the gods and religion of her people to worship The Lord and become an ancestor of Jesus.
The Ammonites were a strong and vicious people who destroyed an ancient race of giants called Zamzummim, and seized their country east of Judea. They were flagrant idolaters, chiefly worshipping Moloch or Saturn. They fought Israel constantly and had many prophecies against them.
What could Lot’s daughters’ legacy have been had they appreciated their situation through faith instead of selfishness? We might have known their names instead of the wickedness of their sons. He might have given them amazing godly husbands and broods of children, but we will never know. They trusted themselves not God.
It is not easy to see past what we want right here and right now. It is not easy to choose to trust God to have our best for us when we could take the easier route and steal the solution sitting in front of our eyes.
I can’t imagine it was easy living in that cave, not knowing if or when Lot would be courageous enough to leave and find a new place to live. But if they knew their dad, they knew he wouldn’t stay there keeping them away from life forever. They had witnessed God’s power firsthand as He saved Lot from death, offered salvation to their fiancées and rained fire and brimstone down in the cities. But they refused to see the hope because they could only see their desires and despair. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 reads,
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Faith is not about looking at the world with our eyes. It is about seeing the world through our relationship with God. If we know God, we can trust Him to do what is right and best for us. We know that what He has for us is far better than what we can get for ourselves.
What have you taken upon yourself that you should have left to the Lord? Is there a choice before you now between waiting for God or taking the immediate fix? I exhort you to choose faith, wait for the Lord. He won’t leave you exhausted at the end of your rope. Isaiah 40:31 promises us,
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint

Are You Wearing the Wedding Garments?

Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean. Isaiah 52:1
Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean. Isaiah 52:1
The Garments
Wedding dresses across our cultures vary greatly, but one thing that is true for most of our cultures is that what the bride and groom wear is important. In China the wedding dress is expected to be a vibrant red. In India the bride wears multiple lavish outfits, one for each of the various ceremonies. In the U.S. a bride is expected to wear a white gown. If she walks down the aisle in a black cocktail dress or a pair of jeans, certain attitudes are conveyed and the crowd (at least the women) will think she is not taking her commitment very seriously. They won’t see her as a bride, just a girl at a party.
Today, let’s take a look at our wedding garments and what they mean to us as believers.
Man and woman were created without sin, they walked with God in a perfect relationship. There was nothing hidden between them.  Genesis 2:25 reads,
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed

There was nothing at all hindering a completely open communion between them. There was no sin, so there was no reason for shame. But then sin entered the world. The man and his wife were deceived, they listened to the perverted words of the serpent and disobeyed God and they fell out of that perfect union with the Lord. When their eyes were opened after eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, the first thing they noticed was their nakedness, their bareness and their first reaction was to cover it up and hide (Genesis 3:7-8). The Lord knew what they had done. He knew where they were but He responded in love, He called out to them, not with wrath but with gentleness and what were His first acts after they confessed? He gave them names. He named Adam and Adam named his wife, Eve. Genesis 3:21 records the act that accompanied their new names,
And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
This is a simple verse but it holds more than first meets the eye. The Lord spilled blood, He sacrificed an animal and made the couple garments and covered their nakedness, their shame with the clothes He had made. This was a loving act of forgiveness.
Our old garments represent our sinful state. Zechariah 3:3-5 reads,
Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.
No matter what we do on our own, no matter how clean we pretend our clothes are, or how many righteous acts we do, we can’t do anything about our iniquity. Isaiah 64:6 reads,
We have all become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
    and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

The first man and woman tried to cover their own sin by making their own clothes. Their act was inadequate. The Lord had told them the consequence for sin would be death (Genesis 2:17) and death entered the world that day. It took a death, it took blood to forgive their sin and restore their righteousness.
The garments God gives us represent righteousness Isaiah 61:10 describes the garments as wedding clothes.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

These garments are required for salvation. We can’t be in a relationship with God based on our own goodness. We can only be in a relationship with God based on the righteousness He gives us. Revelation 19:6-9 describes The Wedding Feast of the Lamb, Our Eternity in perfect and complete union with the Lord, Jesus Christ the Bridegroom,
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
    the Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and exult
    and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
    and his Bride has made herself ready;
8 it was granted her to clothe herself
    with fine linen, bright and pure”--

for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

The bride was ready, she had clothed herself with the proper attire. Blessed are those who are invited, but not everyone who is invited will be admitted. In Matthew 22:2-11 Jesus tells the story of the Wedding Feast. The story ends with the people who answer the invitation enjoying the wedding, but one man had come and chosen not to wear his wedding clothes. Verses 11-14 of that passage read,
“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

We can clothe ourselves in Jesus’ righteousness, with the garments He gives us, or we can clothe ourselves with self-righteousness, pagan religions, and good karma. Zephaniah 1:7-8 says it this way,
Be silent before the Lord God!
    For the day of the Lord is near;
the Lord has prepared a sacrifice
    and consecrated his guests.
8 And on the day of the Lord's sacrifice--
“I will punish the officials and the king's sons
    and all who array themselves in foreign attire.

What does that mean for us practically? How do we clothe ourselves in the beautiful pure linen wedding garments? It begins with sincere repentance. Repentance is not merely saying, “I’m sorry” it is an understanding that breaks the heart and is demonstrated genuinely,

Joel 2:12-14 describes repentance like this,
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
    “return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13     and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the Lord your God,
    for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
    and he relents over disaster.
14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
    and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
    for the Lord your God?

We tear our hearts, not our outer appearance. We take the garments of righteousness from Christ and let Him give us new hearts. And He does. Isaiah 61:1-3 describes what Jesus does for us,
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified

So once we’ve repented and God has given us these beautiful new clothes, what does that look like? Paul describes it in Romans 1:16-17
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

The righteousness of Christ is revealed in faith. We have faith in the power of God for our salvation, for our sanctification. Our lives lived in faith destroys Satan. Revelation 12:9-11 reads,
And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
How can faith do that? Because faith is not faith unless it is expressed. I can shout all day long that I know the bridge won’t collapse, but unless I walk across it, my faith is not real. James said our faith is revealed by what we do. James 2:14-18 reads,
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Is your faith evident? Are you wearing the garments God gave you, the garments of Jesus’ righteousness or are you trying to get by with clothes that might look good enough? Are you ready and dressed for The Wedding Feast of the Lamb?

Genesis 13 Faith is not Blind; It is Seeing Through God’s Eyes.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1
Genesis 13
In the previous devotional we read about how Abram’s lapse in faith led to a lie that had the potential to destroy the promise God had made to him. But Faithful God protected His promise and He protected Abram and Sarai’s future. He also continued to bless Abram, Sarai, and Lot. We will see those blessings in today’s chapter. Verses 1-7 read,
So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb.
2 Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place where he had made an altar at the first. And there Abram called upon the name of the Lord. 5 And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, 6 so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, 7 and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land.

God is so loving and faithful. He brought Abram back to the beginning of his journey. When Abram looked at the familiar area and the altar he had built, I’m certain he reminisced about his entire journey to that point. He remembered what the Lord had done for him and what the Lord had promised him. God was restoring and strengthening his faith.
Abram was not just wealthy, he was very wealthy. Lot too had prospered in that time and as we will read in later chapters, Lot was a righteous man who cared deeply for the way of the Lord. Together, they had so much that the land couldn’t support them both together. They would have to separate. It was time for Lot to leave this man who had raised him since his father’s death and strike out on his own.
Lot was not the promised descendant of Abram. God wanted it to be very clear that this promise would be fulfilled supernaturally by Him, not by manmade laws that would twist what was to fit his promise. So it was time for them to separate. Verses 8-13 read,
Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before theLord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.

The separation was probably not easy, there were no addresses to be exchanged or phone numbers to keep. They might never see one another again. But Abram let Lot choose the direction he wanted to go and when Lot saw the lushness of the Jordan Valley, he chose that way. Lot looked at the choice from a self-focused perspective. He saw it through his eyes, not faith. The passage implies he had some fond memories of Egypt and Jordan Valley reminded him of that. Maybe that is where he first began to get rich or married his wife. He also saw the potential in the Jordan Valley to grow his wealth. He didn’t consider the people. He didn’t look at it from God’s perspective he could have chosen any of 360 paths from where he stood, he chose the path that looked good to him and moved to Sodom. Sodom was a wicked city and Lot would find himself terribly grieved by the unadulterated evil of that place. He would try and raise two daughters there and would not be able to protect them from the corruption, though we know he tried. But he didn’t pray and ask God for direction, he chose based on what his eyes told him and not on the faith of where God would lead.
By giving Lot his freedom to choose any direction, was Abram giving anything up? He sacrificed the lushest land for his nephew. But he had faith that God would take care of him. He didn’t need to worry. Verses 14-18 read,
The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, 15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. 16 I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. 17 Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.

Abram may have thought he sacrificed the best to Lot but he wasn’t concerned. Although Abram was very rich, it wasn’t his money he served, it was the Lord God. And God showed him every direction north, south, west, and the direction Lot had chosen, east and said all the land he could see would one day belong to his offspring. He didn’t just refer to their number as many or even too many to count, He said there would be so many counting would be as impossible as counting dust. Have you looked at dust? Have you picked up a handful of dirt and tried to count it?
Abram trusted it to God and not only for children but he understood the promise to be eternal. He understood he would never see the Promised Land filled with his progeny while he lived. He had faith that the promise was eternal and that one day he would stand in the true and eternal Promised Land with his true children, the believers. The author of Hebrews wrote,
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. (Hebrews 11:8-10).

Lot chose based on his instincts, hopes, and desires, he chose based on what he could see with his human eyes. Abram left the choice to Lot because he had faith, he trusted God no matter where He led him. God not only reiterated His promise to Abram but He restated in a way that had to blow his mind with the extent of it.
Man was created out of the dust of the earth. Abram’s offspring would be so plentiful that like the dust they would not be counted. His offspring includes Israel. But every person on the face of this earth has the opportunity to be included as a descendant of Abram, because every person has the opportunity to be adopted by faith into God’s people. We are Abraham’s spiritual children through faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord’s promise is multilayered. He promised Abram would have many natural offspring. He promised him what would one day become the nation of Israel, and He promised him countless offspring which is you and me, believer.

Genesis 12:10-20 Don’t Worry about Tomorrow, God’s Got You!

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Genesis 12:10-20
Yesterday we read about Abram’s faith, how he trusted God enough to obey Him and follow Him. But Abram was not perfect. Like all of us, he made mistakes, he had lapses in judgement. Today we’ll read about one of those times. Verses 10-13 read,
Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live.13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”

Abram had not yet entered Egypt when he let his worries get to him. He was thinking of what might happen and what could happen. God reminds us, not to worry about tomorrow because today has enough of its own trouble (Matthew 6:34). But that is really easier said than done, right? I mean Abram had to think about what might happen when they entered Egypt, didn’t he? He had to protect his life. Did Abram really imagine God had brought him from Ur to Haran to Egypt and would just leave him? Did he forget that God is the LORD? His actions say yes, he forgot. What did Jesus have to say about worrying about the future? Matthew 6:27-34 in The Message says,
“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.
“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.
 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.
It seems like Abram chose to worry about what might happen because he forgot God was with him. He feared what could happen and chose to lie instead of trust. Understanding that God is actually with us means we can leave the details to Him, we can trust that He has us in His protection and in His sovereignty. Deuteronomy 31:6 reads,
 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Imagine yourself a child in the park with your father. Is he holding your hand? Is he teaching you to catch a ball or is he walking with and listening to you? Now imagine a group of large dangerous looking boys entering the park, blocking the area you need to go. Do you have to fear them as long as you’re with your dad? What does your father do? Does he leave your side and let you walk through the gang alone? No, of course not! He stays with you and protects you. If those boys try to hurt you, your dad steps between them and you. Without your father by your side, you would have a reason to fear, but with him, you have no reason to be afraid.
Abram forgot he could trust God. Abram forgot all God had done for him, his father, and his father’s fathers so he came up with a plan to protect himself. He lied. People claim that he didn’t lie at this point. But I say he did, whether Sarai could technically be called his sister or not is irrelevant. Abram hid the important fact that they were husband and wife from the people who needed to know it. Verses 14-16 continue the narrative.
When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

Abram and Sarai’s lie worked. The pharaoh not only let Abram live, he let him flourish. Sure, Sarai was in his house against her will to be used as Pharaoh pleased but she and Abram were alive. There were consequences for Abram’s sin and even through the consequences God protected His promise to make Abram a great nation. If Sarai had gotten pregnant in Pharaoh’s household, would she and Abram have stopped waiting for God’s promise? Would we doubt who God’s chosen people are? We don’t know because God didn’t let that happen. Even in her sin, God protected Sarai. He punished Pharaoh and his household even though they were ignorant of their sin. But they did not stay ignorant. Verses 17-20 read,
 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

God’s love is truly amazing. Abram and Sarai chose to trust themselves, yet He still protected them. They chose to lean on their own plans and forget that God had great plans for them. We know that if they had chosen righteousness and not lied, God would have protected them because He had promised Abram he would become the father of many nations. God doesn’t forsake those who love Him, toss out His promises, or forget His covenants, even when we do.
Believer, what are you worrying about? Stop, remember who God is and trust Him to be who He says He is. Are you afraid of bad news? There is no reason to be if you trust the Lord. (Psalm 112:7). Walk in the peace of Go because you have nothing to be anxious over, God’s got you!
