1 Kings 17 What Faith Can Do is Great!

Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
1 Kings 17
Faith can do great things. Your faith to obey God is a testimony to the world to God’s goodness and greatness.
Elijah was a powerful prophet of great faith. His faith allowed him to obey The Lord regardless of the troubles which surrounded him. King Ahab was the most evil king of Israel yet, and The Lord sent the prophet to the king.  Verse 1 reads,
“Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
The Lord then sent Elijah to live east of Jordan by a brook Cherith. He provided for Elijah in an amazing way, he drank from the brook and ravens brought him bread and meat every morning and evening. But eventually the brook dried up. Elijah could have lost hope. He could have called for rain, but instead he chose to trust God. And God sent him to a widow in Zarapeth who would feed him. Elijah arrived to find the woman gathering sticks. He didn’t know it but he had arrived just in time. He asked the widow to bring him some water. As she left to get it for him, he asked her to bring him a little bread as well. She told Elijah just how desperate her situation was. Verses 12-16 read,
“And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” 15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.”
This woman was ready to eat her last meal and then die of starvation with her son. Elijah knew God had sent him to this woman and I would guess that he must have wanted to help her very much. She was not merely hungry but close to death due to famine caused by the drought. Once again, Elijah could end the drought by commanding rain, but instead He chose to trust God and let Him provide. He told the woman that God was going to provide for her in a miraculous way and so He did. Until it rained, she would have all the oil and flour she needed and so Elijah, the widow, and her son would eat.
The Lord was being so good to her and on top of that she was given the honor of hosting the prophet, a man of God. But then the enemy attacked and suddenly her only son became very ill and died. She was, of course devastated. She had been given hope, they were not going to die of starvation and now her child was dead. Verse 18 reads,
“And she said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!”
She reacted as many of us might, first she blamed Elijah. But then she blamed herself. Which of her sins had caused her to be punished by losing her son? What had she done to deserve such a horrible thing? She thought God wanted her to suffer. But her sins were not the reason for her child’s illness or his death. Her reaction was similar to the Disciples in John 9 when they met a blind man and asked Jesus whether his parents or he had sinned and caused his blindness. John 9:3-7 says,
“Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.”
This was the case for the widow’s son, his death was so that God could be glorified. It gave Elijah an opportunity to show the widow how truly great God was. Elijah knew God didn’t want the woman to suffer. He had been feeding her, but he loved her so much that He now He would show her something really great. Verses 19-23 read,
“And he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed. 20 And he cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?” 21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, let this child's life come into him again.” 22 And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives.”
Not long before this her son had been so malnourished that he had been close to death. Then he had died suddenly of a serious illness, but now he was alive. He was alive because Elijah had faith in God. He was alive because Elijah knew how much God loved the boy and his mother. Elijah asked the Lord, not once but three times. He cried out to God and God listened. He gave the child his life again. Elijah’s obedience to God was a great testimony to The Lord. Verse 24 says,
“And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”
Elijah could have stopped what The Lord was doing over Israel and called rain and any time, but He trusted God with his provision, and obeyed.  He could have called rain to help the starving widow, but he had faith in God’s will and let God provide for him, the widow and her child. And God used him in a way that many of us might never know.
Do you trust God like that? Do you know His will is better than yours? It is faith and obedience like that which give hope to the hopeless and life to the dying. Go ahead, try it, and see what faith can do.

Ezekiel 37 The Valley of Bones

Ezekiel Chapter 37

The Lord showed Ezekiel a valley bones. The valley was filled with dry bones completely clean of any flesh. Verses 3-6 read,

“And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

When God spoke to Ezekiel and said, “Can these bones live?” the obvious answer for most people would have been a resounding “No!” But Ezekiel trusted God. He knew there was a purpose for the vision, and he knew that God is God and all things are possible with God. Ezekiel saw a valley filled with skeletons but God saw more. God saw what could be and what would be. So Ezekiel answered, “O Lord God, you know.” The Lord’s response was to tell Ezekiel to prophesy, to deliver His word and will to the bones. Ezekiel obeyed even though it seemed hopeless to expect a valley of bones to receive that word. Verses 7-10 describe what happened next.

“So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.”

When the Lord has a word, a will, it will be done. Even the impossible becomes possible. God gave the very dead remains life again. They were so dead, there was nothing left of them, not a single shred of flesh, just very dry bones. But the Word of God restored flesh and blood to the bones, and the Spirit gave them breath and life and they stood and became a great army.

God used Ezekiel to speak His word and command life to the bones. He uses you and me to speak His word to the dead today so that they can be restored to life. When Jesus becomes Lord of someone’s life, they are brought out of death to new life. They are made whole, healed, and given the new promise of eternal life. They are given the Holy Spirit and sealed eternally. People may have lost all hope of life. They may think their sin is too grievous and that there is no way to have a relationship with God. Even others looking at them may see them as doomed but the Lord doesn’t. The Lord knows there is possibility and if He tells us to give His word to someone we must reply, “O Lord God, you know.” Verses 11-14 read,

“Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14 And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

Not only can everyone experience spiritual resurrection but there will be a physical one as well. Believers have been called out of their spiritual graves, no longer headed for Hell and now headed for New Jerusalem. One day we will be called out of our physical graves and gathered together in New Jerusalem with Jesus as our King forever. That resurrection is the perfection of the new life we receive now on earth. We were once dead in sin, destined for eternal Hell. Now we are alive in Christ living eternal life with Him. One day we will raise out of our graves and be completely transformed and completed whole and holy.

At the time of Ezekiel’s prophecy Israel was two nations, Israel and Judah. But the Lord had promised to restore them and He meant absolutely. He said He would unite the divided nation to be the one nation they were meant to be. He even had Ezekiel perform a miracle of taking two sticks and making them one stick. Verses 21-22 read,

“then say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. 22 And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms.”

These verses refer to the spilt nation of Israel, and they refer to the Jews and the gentiles united in Christ. In unity it no longer mattered if the Jew were from Judah or Ephraim, he was from Israel. In Christ it doesn’t matter if we were Hebrew or Greek, we are belong to Christ. Verses 26-28 read,

“I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.28 Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”

Jesus is God with us forever. He is our sanctuary. We are the temple of God and His Spirit is within us and with us forever. Nothing can take us out of God’s hand. Nothing can separate us from Him. That is His awesome promise. Once we were dead. We were a pile of dry brittle condemned bones. Now we are fully alive, filled with the Spirit of the Living God, living with Jesus as our King forever. We are united with God, inseparable from Him.

You have the power to speak that life to the dead. God didn’t show Ezekiel the valley of bones and say ‘What a pity for them’ He showed Ezekiel the valley of bones and said, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord… you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” I encourage you today, to listen to the Lord, obey His Spirit and prophesy to those He calls you to. Give the hopeless the hope of Jesus. Show them they can be united with God. He will be their God and they will be His people.

John 20:24-31 Thomas went from Dogged Unbelief of the Truth to Intense Proclamation of the Truth. Jesus is Lord and God.

John Chapter 20 Verses 24-31

Poor Thomas gets a bad rap from the world. He’s is better known to us, even people who haven’t read the scriptures as Doubting Thomas. Yet, him isn’t the gospels that named it that, He is known as Thomas Didymus, or Thomas the Twin. He was one of the more vocal of the Twelve, and showed curiosity and exuberance for Jesus during His ministry. Thomas wanted answers and wasn’t afraid to ask questions or be honest. But Thomas most famous act is declaring that he wouldn’t believe the ther disciples had seen Jesus in the flesh unless he could not only touch Jesus’ wounds but stick his hand into them. Verses 24-29 tell the story.

“Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Thomas isn’t so much different than most of us, or even the rest of the disciples. The others didn’t believe until Jesus revealed Himself to them. They asked for proof too. (Luke 24:39-43). But Thomas wasn’t with them, then. He wanted the same proof they said they had. How many in the world can’t believe the Gospel? How many want scientific proof in order to have faith? Even when they are presented with the science, they can’t believe.

But Thomas had a different reaction when Jesus showed Himself to Him. He answered “My Lord and my God!”  I get the impression Thomas didn’t touch Jesus wounds. He saw Jesus and immediately proclaimed Him to be his Lord and God. Thomas made Jesus his Master and announced Him to be God, His God. He wrapped up salvation in his declaration. His answer was personal, profound, and a 180º from his previous dramatic statement that he wouldn’t believe unless he got to touch and put his hand Jesus wounds.

For Thomas, seeing was believing and believing led to seeing the whole truth at once. But Jesus pronounced a beatitude for us, who were not among the more than 500 people who got to see the Risen Lord during the forty days after the Resurrection. He said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Believer, He is referring to you and me! We are blessed. We can rejoice and be envied. We are gifted and it is special that we believe in Jesus Christ without the benefit of seeing Him the flesh. Peter described that joy and blessing in 1 Peter 1:3-9.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

We have been given this special time, our circumstances, our lives and we can use all that to share the awesome news with others. God saved you, shapes you, and put you where you are at the time you are there, coming in contact with the specific people you do as a gift. You have the hope of your own resurrection and eternity. You are blessed because you believe and you can share that blessing with others. Jesus wants you to too. (John 20:21).

Your salvation and sharing that joy with others is the reason John wrote the gospel. Verses 30-31 read,

“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

You weren’t given the gift of belief so you could hide, keep it to yourself, or be stagnant. You were given the gift so you could have life! You are meant to live. You are meant to grow. Jesus made it possible for Thomas to grow from asserting his stubborn unbelief to pronouncing the truth. He changed eleven men with shaky faith into the Church, the Bride of Christ. He changed Saul from a man zealous against Jesus to Paul a missionary zealous for Him. Jesus did everything He did for you, so that you could live and live freely, generously, and richly. He came so you could live out loud with enthusiasm, spirit, and cheerfulness. John 10:9-10 reads,

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

John Chapter 20 Verses 1-23

Early Sunday morning before the sun had risen, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb. When she arrived she was shocked to find the stone that the blocked the entrance had been taken away. I can imagine her dismay. She was mourning Jesus. She was obviously deeply grieved. In her anguish, Mary ran to Peter and John who were also on their way to the tomb. She met them with the news, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” (Verse 2). The two men began running to the tomb, although John reached it first, he waited outside as Peter entered. Verses 6-9 read,

“Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.”

They believed Mary, that someone had moved His body. They still didn’t understand what Jesus had told them about resurrecting. They must have felt more forlorn at that moment and they went back to their homes wondering who had moved Jesus’ body and why.  What conspiracy theories must have filled them with fear?

Mary went back to the tomb and was crying. When she arrived she saw two angels sitting on the shelf where Jesus’ body had been, one at the feet and one at the head. This is the only instance I can think of where a person was not afraid at the sight of angels. They were seated and she was in the middle of deep grief so maybe she didn’t identify them as angels. Deep emotion can make us blind to circumstances around us. Maybe they didn’t appear as the fierce and mighty creatures they normally do. Perhaps they had put on a human appearance. Instead of having to tell her not to be afraid, they asked her why she was crying.  She answered, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” (Verse 13). Then she turned around and Jesus was standing there, but she didn’t recognize Him. Not only because of her heartache but possibly because Jesus had veiled Himself from her the way He would later with others.  Verses 15-18 read,

“Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.”

Mary was looking for a dead man, but Jesus came to her and showed He is alive. Jesus didn’t allow Mary to stand there clinging to Him, not moving forward. He told her to go tell His brothers He was ascending to His Father and our Father, His God and our God.  For the first time, He referred to the disciples as His brothers. His death had paid the price for the sins of believers and His resurrection had made us sons of God, our God. The pronoun used to distinguish God is ídios. According to Strong’s is means uniquely one's own and is stronger than the simple possessive pronoun. It means private and personal. What an amazing way to describe God Almighty.  It is such an intimate description of God as our Father.

Relationships had changed now, because Jesus had changed them. No longer is God the Father, but your Father. No longer is He God, but your God. Because Jesus died on the cross and paid the price of death required for sins and rose from the dead, God can be your Father and you can be His child. Because Jesus sacrificed Himself and overcame death, you can belong to God, and He to you in a very intimate and personal way.

Later, in the evening the disciples were gathered in a locked room because of fear, when Jesus appeared to them. Now Mary had told them what had happened but what she said was impossible and even if they wanted to believe her, they still didn’t really accept it. Verses 19-23 describe the scene.

“On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

When you are confronted by the truth as were Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John do you believe it? They needed confirmation that He was not in the tomb. When they saw it, they still didn’t understand the depth of what they saw. It was Jesus who had to tell them. It was Jesus who had to reveal Himself to them. And the first thing He did was send them to tell others the good news of peace, peace with God, peace of heart, soul, and mind. He didn’t say, ‘Stay here and revel in this relationship’ or ‘keep this awesomeness to yourself and enjoy me privately.’ He said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” He gave the disciples the Holy Spirit so that they would be able to tell people, not as men, but as sons of God. It is only God who can save, who can give the words, the wisdom, and the faith to believe Him.

When Jesus gave the disciples the Holy Spirit, He also gave them His desire and nature of mercy. He told them to forgive freely. If they withheld mercy from those in need, then mercy would be denied to them. Peace with God requires forgiveness. We have no right not to forgive others when God has forgiven us so much. It is not us who saves, it is God. It is not us who has the right to be merciful or not be merciful. God is rich in mercy. We have His Spirit, therefore we can be rich in mercy too.

John 16:16-22 Jesus Makes Joy out of Pain

John Chapter 16 Verses 16-22

Jesus continued teaching the disciples before His arrest and crucifixion. Although it was He would go through an ersatz trial, beatings, and torturous execution, His words were for His friends so that when they went through the grief of it, they would remember and have comfort. Verse 16 reads,

“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”

The disciples didn’t know what Jesus meant. They asked one another and wanted to ask Him. I think by now they knew that Jesus said things the way He did for a reason and they trusted Him to clarify it in His way rather than interrupt Him and ask for explanations. And Jesus did, but not by saying, “Remember, I told you I was going to die and rise from the dead three days later.” They would remember that when the time was right. He instead talked about the anguish and heartache they would experience. Verses 20-22 reads,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

They were about to go through deep pain and they would react in that pain. Although of the eleven men there, only John stayed with his Lord throughout the trial and crucifixion, all of them wept bitter tears and felt the intense distress of losing Him. They cried from their homes or other places they hid. But Jesus said the world will rejoice.

I believe He meant it two ways. On one hand the immediate majority of people overcome by the mob mentality cheered and celebrated Jesus’ crucifixion. They didn’t think they had to deal with His rabble rousing trouble making ways anymore. But in the truest way, the world rejoiced because Jesus’ death and resurrection meant hope and salvation, it brought forgiveness and reconciliation with God. His sacrifice gave us life.

The disciples would most certainly hurt and grieve but that sorrow would absolutely turn into joy. The joy of Jesus death and resurrection is deeper, truer, and greater than any joy that exists. It is perfect and it is ours because of what Jesus did. Jesus used the analogy of childbirth to explain it. I’ve been told and I can imagine that the pain of childbirth is horrendous. But after the pain there is a new life, a child filled with potential and the love the mother has for that child turns her excruciating pain into exquisite joy.

When Jesus suffered and died on the cross, His pain was intense but He faced it with joy because He knew the purpose He served. The disciples’ misery was also intense, most of them had abandoned Jesus and they felt guilt, loss of hope, loss of a true friend, and loss of a leader. But then Jesus rose from the dead and their sorrow became joy. They knew then more clearly than ever before that Jesus was the Son of God, Messiah, and Savior. He forgave them for their desertion and betrayals. They were overjoyed. But then He ascended and gave them the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came into them their joy was complete it was a joy that was in their very cores, they understood the beauty and mystery of the Gospel, they were able to reflect Christ, think like Him, and act like Him. And Jesus told them that joy could never be taken from them. It is was theirs forever, regardless of the suffering they experienced.

Isaiah 31:1-3 describes it like this,

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.”

And Psalm 30:11-12 says,

“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”

The pain in life is still there. God makes good come out of it, He turns your mourning into dancing, and gives you reason to praise. That same joy is yours, Believer. No matter what you go through you have God with you. He is in you making it possible for you to go through it, learn through it, and become more like Jesus through it. He saved you and gave you the ability to pass that good testimony on to others and share His joy with a world that needs Him.

John Chapter 12 Verses 9-19

Jesus’ impact was becoming greater and greater. People were believing in Him. The Sanhedrin, the chief priests, and the Pharisees were not only uneasy with the situation they were upset. It wasn’t just Jesus speaking anymore. His followers were spreading the word about Him. Lazarus was telling everyone what had happened and all the people who believed because they had seen Jesus call Lazarus out of his tomb were telling people.

Verses 9-11 read,

“When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.”

Your testimony matters. Your testimony is the proof of Jesus in your life. When you tell people the things Jesus has done for you it impacts them. They have a choice to believe or not to believe. They deserve to be given the option.

Lazarus and those who believed because of his resurrection had such an impact that they created an impromptu celebration for Jesus. Maybe they were the first flash mob. Verses 12-15 describe it.

“The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
    sitting on a donkey's colt!”

They were excited and wanted to show their veneration of Jesus. They didn’t have it all right, but God forgives our imperfections and eventually they would learn and mature. These enthusiastic worshippers still thought that the Messiah would set up an earthly kingdom. They thought He would free them from Roman oppression and re-establish Israel as a nation. That is why they used the palm branches which symbolize military victory and triumph, peace and eternal life. They were sending a message to Rome while they paid tribute to Christ. But their act sends a message to us as well. Jesus gives us victory over sin and death. He reconciles us to the Father and gives true peace. He gives us eternal life. The spontaneous celebration of Jesus was another step of preparation for Jesus death. He was proclaimed king by the people.

While the people were proclaiming Jesus their earthly king, Jesus pointed them back to scripture and directed them to God by sitting on a donkey instead of a more stately horse. He accepted their laud (as He had every right to do) but gave the glory to God.

John and the other disciples didn’t grasp it all that day, but after Jesus was glorified the Holy Spirit reminded them and revealed the truth of it to them. They wrote it down so that you and I could gain the benefit of their testimony.

The people that had believed Jesus had become a crowd, and the crowd kept telling everyone what they had witnessed and experienced. More people were believing that Jesus was the Christ. And the Pharisees were freaking out. Verse 19 reads,

“So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

The Pharisees saw that everything they were trying to do was futile. People were going after Jesus regardless of the risk of excommunication. They were ready to finally arrest Jesus and carry out their threat to kill Him. Jews from everywhere gathered in Jerusalem at Passover and they were going after Jesus. But the Pharisees had spoken prophetically without knowing it.

Jesus came for the whole world. He gave His life for everyone. Your testimony could be the thing that brings someone to an understanding of their need of Jesus, the goodness of the Father, and the power of the Spirit. Your witness could plant the seed or bring in the harvest. Jesus gave His life for you. He gave His life for the guy across the street and for every soul on this earth. If you believe, Jesus has done a great miracle in your life. He brought you to life from death. Shouldn’t you be telling everyone about that awesome miracle?

Lazarus testimony was powerful. Yours is no less formidable. Jesus saved you. That is something worth telling. How can anyone believe if they never hear? How can they hear if you don’t tell?

John 11:25-26 Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.

John Chapter 11 Verses 25-26

John 11:25-26 reads,

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Jesus said this of Himself. He revealed this trait of who He is, so it is important to understand what it means that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. What is resurrection? It’s simplest definition is, “the act of causing something that had ended or been forgotten or lost to exist again, to be used again” or “the state of one risen from the dead.” (Merriam-Webster, 2014).

In Judaism and Christianity we look forward to the prophesied resurrection that will bring us into Eternity. In Ezekiel chapter 37 The Lord shows Ezekiel a vision of resurrection. Ezekiel is a valley of dry bones and God has him prophesy to the bones and as he does, the bones grow muscles, sinew, and skin, but they remain dead until God tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath and when Ezekiel does, the breath enters them and they stand up and become a great army. Ezekiel 37:12-14 read,

“Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people.14 And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.”

Isaiah 26:19 describes our ultimate resurrection this way,

“Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise.
You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy!
For your dew is a dew of light,
and the earth will give birth to the dead.”

After Jesus’ resurrection we learned more clearly about our own expected resurrection.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 reads,

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

But Jesus didn’t say, “I will be the resurrection.” He said, “I am.”

His Godly statement gives us hope that we do not have to wait until He returns to receive the new life He promises. He gives new life now. He doesn’t only give it. He is the source. We learned in John 1:1-5 that Jesus is the Word, God’s will manifested, that in Him is the life, and everything was created by Him and through Him and for Him.

Jesus is the source of our physical life and our spiritual life. Death entered the world when Adam and Eve sinned. Life entered the world when Jesus rose from the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:22 reads, “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Believer, you once were dead, but now you live. You once had no hope, you could only look forward to eternal death after your physical life ended. But now, you await eternal life in New Jerusalem with Jesus. But that life begins the moment you accept Jesus as Christ your Savior. Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26).  He gives you life the instant you believe and it is eternal.

2 Corinthians 5:15-17 reads,

“and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Jesus gave you life when you believed. He continually makes possible your physical and spiritual life. And one day, Believer, you will rise up transformed in an instant to spend eternity with Christ. Though we look forward to our eventual resurrection, we are called to live resurrected now.

Jesus came to save everyone. He doesn’t want to stop with just you and the Ladies Auxiliary, and the church deacons. He died so all men could live. That includes your racist neighbor, the hooker, the junkie, the sweet lady with 11 cats, and the atheist who has been slandering you. They’re dead. But Jesus is the resurrection and the life. He wants to breathe life into their dry bones. Just as Ezekiel spoke God’s word in his vision and brought life to the bones, you, Christian are called to speak life into the remains of the world.

When Jesus told Martha that He was the resurrection and the life and that whoever believed in Him would have eternal life, He asked her if she believed. She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” (John 11:27).

Don’t keep the awesome gift of God’s grace to yourself. Jesus is the resurrection and the life. That is awesome and desperately needed news for the dead. If you are alive, you are Jesus’ representative, you are salt and light. Express your love of God by doing His will which is that none will perish but all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9).

John Chapter 11 Verses 17-45

You may recall that yesterday we read about Lazarus’ illness and how Jesus waited until He knew Lazarus was dead before He went to Bethany. Today the narrative picks up as Jesus neared Martha and Mary’s home. Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days by the time Jesus got there. Lazarus’ sisters Mary and Martha were both in mourning for their brother. But when Martha heard that Jesus was on His way she ran out to meet Him. Because of Bethany’s vicinity to Jerusalem, many Jews were at her home and she didn’t want Jesus to face any more danger than He already did. She also knew that Jesus could offer her comfort with the Word and Love of God. Martha and her family loved Jesus deeply. She knew He would need comfort as well. Verses 20-22 read,

“So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

Martha offers up a lovely image of faith. Firstly, she tells Jesus had He been there Lazarus wouldn’t have died. She didn’t accuse Jesus of anything, she simply states that had Jesus been there, it would have been different, because the Father would grant Jesus whatever He asked. She understood that for some reason, Jesus had allowed Lazarus to die and she acceded to it. Her statement is profound. It reveals her acceptance of God’s sovereignty and Jesus unity with the Father. Verses 23-24 read,

“Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

Even here, Martha’s faith is exhibited in her contentment with God’s will over her own. For four days people had been consoling her with words such as, “You will see your brother again in the resurrection” and “He is no longer suffering.” Martha knew Jesus didn’t offer empty consolation and yet His words must have sounded like the feeble attempts to solace her. She knew Jesus words were not empty. She comforted Jesus in acknowledging that yes, on the last day, Lazarus would rise again.

Verses 25-27 read,

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

What a complex and intense teaching! And Jesus gave it to Martha. The beautiful thing is, Martha accepted it. She didn’t ask for clarification, she just accepted it by faith and proclaimed Jesus Christ. Her love for Jesus bore itself out in faith which allowed her to grasp Jesus’ sovereignty and His message. She received Jesus’ words, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.”

Martha ran back to the house and told Mary that Jesus was there and waiting for her. So Mary went to meet Him. The many people gathered at the house for mourning followed her thinking she was going to her brother’s tomb. She ran to Jesus and fell at His feet crying and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (Verse 32). Jesus was moved by her weeping and the weeping of the many people who were with her. He asked where Lazarus had been laid and they led Him to the tomb.

Jesus was not cold. He was not stoic. He reached His friend’s tomb and He wept. While Jesus mourned the death of His friend, the crowd wondered why this supposedly great man who had healed a blind man didn’t heal Lazarus rather than let him die.

Verses 38-44 read,

“Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

This was truly the glory of God! Lazarus had been dead four days, decaying and Jesus brought Him back to life. He was careful to give God all the glory for the miracle. Mary and Martha’s belief was rewarded in a way that they never could have guessed. God’s purpose was revealed. Verse 45 reads,

“Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,”

If Jesus had healed Lazarus and kept Him from dying, the people would have heard about it and said, “Oh how nice.” They had heard that Jesus had healed a blind man and that hadn’t been enough. Hearing about a friend being healed wouldn’t have done it. They had heard about Jesus but they needed to see Him. Because of the miracle of Lazarus, they saw Jesus and believed. I wonder who amongst those people were among the 120 gathered in the upper room on the day of Pentecost a year and half later. I wonder how many people those witnesses shared their encounter with and how many of those people believed.

Jesus didn’t want to let Lazarus die. He grieved the loss of the man deeply. Jesus obeyed the Father rather than do what He wanted and the impact was immense. Everyone knew that had Jesus been there, Lazarus wouldn’t have died. But if Lazarus hadn’t of died God wouldn’t have been glorified and all those who believed would have remained ignorant.

God is sovereign. It doesn’t always make sense in the moment to obey Him. But it always makes sense in His plan. Do you trust God? Do you truly and wholly? Do you obey your emotions and call that being led by the Spirit? Had Jesus obeyed His emotions, He would have healed Lazarus the moment He heard about His illness. Instead He obeyed His Father and though that meant facing pain, the outcome was well worth it.

John 11:1-16 Faith Doesn't Always Look Like What is Expected

John Chapter 11 Verses 1-16

John Chapter 11 tells about Lazarus’ death and Jesus bringing him back to life. There is so much to learn from this chapter that I have broken it up into more than one day.

Verses 1-4 read,

“Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Bethany was about 2 miles from Jerusalem. It was dangerous for Jesus to be there, since the Jews there were eager to kill Him. But Jesus wasn’t worried about that sort of thing. He was interested in doing His Father’s will and had peace that God would protect Him. The only mention of Lazarus in the Bible is in these two chapters of John. But we know that Jesus loved Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. We know that Jesus had taught them, they believed Him, and that the three of them were faithful to Him.

I’m sure Mary and Martha knew how dangerous it would be to ask Jesus to come to Judea. But they also knew that Jesus loved Lazarus and that He would want to know about their brother’s illness. And they knew He could heal Him. But when Jesus heard, He didn’t jump up and go. He said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

We know from the story that this illness did lead to physical death, so Jesus wasn’t referring to that. He was saying that like much of the suffering, illness, and pain we experience, Lazarus’ illness was for God’s glory. Since this wasn’t going to cause spiritual death, they would wait per the Father’s will. I’m sure it pained Him not to leave immediately and go be with His friends, but He stayed two days longer in the place where He was. It was the Father’s will that Jesus let Lazarus die and that He be dead for a little while so there could be no doubt.

Jesus finally said, Okay, it’s time to go to Judea. And the disciples freaked out. “Remember when we were there a couple of months ago and they tried to stone you to death?!?!? Um! They’re trying to kill you! That is not a great idea!”

Verses 9-10 read,

“Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

The disciples had nothing to fear and Jesus didn’t fear at all. Jesus knew that He was doing the Father’s will for the glory of God, and He knew that whatever happened it would be to God’s glory. He is the light of the world and the disciples didn’t have to fear because they were walking with Him. They had Jesus to keep them from stumbling in the darkness.

Jesus, the light of the world is the giver of life and salvation and He is with you, Believer.  Everything He said and did was for God’s glory. He gave us the charge of being the light of the world as well. Do you take that responsibility seriously? Are you the light of the world? Do you walk in the righteousness of Christ? Do you have faith that enables you to choose good over evil?

Being the light, being especially close to Jesus doesn’t protect you from bad things happening. Lazarus still got sick and died. Being close to Jesus allows you to understand that those bad things happen so that God can be glorified and more people can believe and so that your own faith and that of those around you can be strengthened.

Verses 11-15 read,

“After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

Jesus didn’t want His friend to die, but He knew that Lazarus death would allow a great miracle and many more people would believe, the disciples faith would be fortified, and the word of God’s greatness would be spread.

It was dangerous for Jesus to go to Judea, and now the disciples wondered what the point was. Was it worth risking death so Jesus could morn Lazarus and comfort Mary and Martha? But they did trust Jesus and they would follow Him wherever He said to go.

Verse 16 reads,

“So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Thomas is sadly remembered as “Doubting Thomas” but here he shows the loyalty and faith of a disciple willing to enter danger and even follow his Lord to death. Whatever reasons Jesus had for going, Thomas was ready to go with Him.

Faith in Jesus means that we, like Jesus pay attention to God’s voice rather than the circumstances. Jesus could have obeyed the circumstances of the situation and run off and healed Lazarus, He could have healed him from a distance. But that wasn’t God’s will. It would have looked more like love if Jesus had reacted to the situation rather than obey the Father. Jesus wasn’t concerned with looking right, He was concerned with doing right.

Faith in Jesus means that when bad things happen we can respond with peace and joy because we know that God will be glorified and we will be conformed to Jesus’ image. God would have been glorified if Lazarus had been healed, but how much more was God glorified in Lazarus’ resurrection? How much did witnessing that miracle augment the faith of the followers?

Faith in Jesus means knowing His way is best, even if we can’t understand it. Heading into Judea didn’t look wise to anyone. Jesus trusted His Father. Sometimes He asks us to do things that frighten us or don’t make any sense to us. Faith allows us to obey with peace that the rest of the world doesn’t comprehend.

Ephesians 1:1-14 God chose to adopt you. Believer, you are His heir.

10/23/2014

Yesterday we completed the book of Isaiah. I found that book to teach me much more than I supposed it would and I enjoyed reading it much more than I thought I could. Today we will begin Ephesians.

Read Ephesians Chapter 1 verses 1-14

Verses 3-10 read,

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.”

Verse 3 says that God the Father has blessed us (believers) in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. What does this mean? The phrase “heavenly places” is used two more times in this book. Chapter 1 verses 19-23 read,

“and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Christ was raised from the dead and is made authority over all things. He is seated at the right hand of The Father in the heavenly places. Moreover, we have been raised from death as well and we are seated with Him in the heavenly places. Chapter 2 verses 5-7 read,

“even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

That is a big deal! We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. We’ve raised from the dead and made alive together with Christ! We’ve been saved. Our sins have been wiped away. They are gone. And we are seated with Christ over all rule and authority and power and dominion. Just like all things are under Jesus’ feet, they are subject to our authority as well. We are subject to Christ and all things are subject to Him and in turn to us. Think that over.

Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. But God chose to adopt us. He chose to adopt us before He even created the earth. (Verse 5). He chose you. He chose me. We too are His children with all the privileges that being heirs of God entails. Why? Why would He choose to do something like that for us? Because He wanted to. Because He loves us and wants to shower us in His love. He doesn’t need our worship, He’s got angels worshipping Him 24/7. He doesn’t need our service. He created the whole world, He is omnipotent. He simply wanted to because He loves you so much and He wanted to share Himself with you. He chose to save you, to forgive you and cover you with His love, blessings, and gifts. And He chose you for a reason and a purpose. He knew you were the person for the job He has for you. He designed you. You see He didn’t only choose you, or me, or your pastor, He chose others too. He chose to make a way for every single person to come to know Him, be adopted and be loved. Verse 10 reads,

“as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.”

That is God’s desire, His will and His plan, that all things will be united in Him. And as you bask in His immense love as you enjoy the immeasurable power, the beautiful gifts, and the great authority He has given you and you conform to Christ’s image you will glorify Him. In your glory and praise, as you manifest the attributes of Christ, are filled and sealed with His Spirit, and live victoriously for Christ others will see God and hear Him calling them. Others will turn to Christ and accept His miraculous and wonderful grace. Verses 11-14 put it like this,

“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
