Ezekiel 14. God isn't a deck of tarot cards or a Magic 8 Ball.

Ezekiel Chapter 14

We can’t fake devotion to God. We might be able to fake it to the world and even to ourselves, but not to God. If there are idols in our hearts, we cannot expect to treat God as if there are not. When one cheats on her husband then goes home to be intimate with her spouse, she is a liar and an adulterer. She may fool her husband, but God will not be deceived. He knows our hearts. He sees what she does, even in the dark. We can’t turn to astrology, expanded consciousness, or other spiritual avenues and also turn to the LORD God. He is the One True Living God. He had some words for the people who practiced idolatry and yet still came to seek His advice. He would not allow them to consult Him as if He were a Zoltar Fortune Teller game or a Magic 8 Ball. Verses 6-8 read,

“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations. 7 For any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel, who separates himself from me, taking his idols into his heart and putting the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to a prophet to consult me through him, I the Lord will answer him myself. 8 And I will set my face against that man; I will make him a sign and a byword and cut him off from the midst of my people, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

It isn’t good and happy news that these kind of idolaters receive. They will get what they asked for. The LORD will answer them personally. Not by giving in to inquiries, but by telling them who He is. He is a jealous God and He will not put up with idolatry.

It is not only the cheaters who must beware, it is the prophet to whom they turn. It can be tempting to give them the answers they seek or give them sugar-coated watered-down messages rather than “repent or be punished.” But the LORD doesn’t want or need His children to change His word. Verses 9-10 speak to the prophet who is deluded by the idolater.

“And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the Lord, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. 10 And they shall bear their punishment—the punishment of the prophet and the punishment of the inquirer shall be alike”

To tell the idolater what she wants to hear is to lead her away from the truth instead of to the Lord. To let someone think that God approves of a melting pot of beliefs, where He holds the same weight as a charm bracelet is synonymous with teaching them to worship a god of their own making. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. He is the only way to the Father. Allowing people to think God is cool with any other path is letting them walk down that path toward Hell.

We can’t dilute His message. We can’t let people think live and let live is okay. To live and let live is not only to live and let die but leading people to death. Tell them the truth and let them make the choice without our or God’s stamp of approval. What is the truth? God loves them and wants them to know Him, the real Him, not the god they’ve created. Verse 11 says it like this.

“that the house of Israel may no more go astray from me, nor defile themselves anymore with all their transgressions, but that they may be my people and I may be their God, declares the Lord God.”

A child will not stop behaving badly if she thinks her parents endorse her conduct. People will not stop sinning if they think the Lord sanctions it. It isn’t your job to make them feel good about themselves and their practices. It is your job to obey the LORD. It is your job to glorify Him and make disciples. God knows what He is doing. Some people need to suffer or struggle before they turn to God. Do not take that away from them. Verses 21-23 read,

“For thus says the Lord God: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four disastrous acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast! 22 But behold, some survivors will be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out; behold, when they come out to you, and you see their ways and their deeds, you will be consoled for the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, for all that I have brought upon it. 23 They will console you, when you see their ways and their deeds, and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, declares the Lord God.”

Glorify the Lord. Do not compromise. Do not allow idolatry into your life. If someone comes to you seeking counsel from the Lord, listen to what the Lord tells you and speak only what He tells you. You are not a psychic and God is not a pack of tarot cards. To offer them the advice they ask for is to be deceived and to minimize the Lord to a crystal ball. Just because they ask God, doesn’t mean they worship Him alone. Just because they come to you doesn’t mean you should offer your wisdom. Let them repent or let them find their answers in their horoscope.

Ezekiel Chapter 13 If God Didn't Say It, Don't Claim It.

Ezekiel Chapter 13

The Lord gave Ezekiel prophecy against false prophets. He doesn’t like it when people use His name to claim their words are His. This is not a only a thing of the past. It happens frequently today. Verses 2-3 read,

“Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel, who are prophesying, and say to those who prophesy from their own hearts: ‘Hear the word of the Lord!’ 3 Thus says the Lord God, Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!”

Verses 6-7 reads,

“They have seen false visions and lying divinations. They say, ‘Declares the Lord,’ when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they expect him to fulfill their word. 7 Have you not seen a false vision and uttered a lying divination, whenever you have said, ‘Declares the Lord,’ although I have not spoken?”

That happens all too often today. People say, “God said!” or “The Lord will do…” But He hasn’t said or promised anything of the kind. They may say these things to encourage someone, they may assume their own hearts’ desires are really the will of God, or they may blatantly make up a “word” in order to manipulate the Lord. Whatever their motivations, what they are doing is wrong, blasphemous, and dangerous.

We have no right to make promises for God. Imagine the person hearing the promise and waiting for God to fulfill a word He never gave. They felt good at the time they received it, but what about when the miracle didn’t happen, the provision didn’t manifest, or the blessing passed them by? Will they blame the false prophet? No, they’ll blame the Lord, and themselves. They will follow the lies, and rather than come to the place God wants them, they will seek gratification of false promises.

True prophecy doesn’t always sound good. Sometimes the Lord’s proclamations are difficult. They often require action which may be contrary to our desires or challenging to carry out. His prophecy is always in love and with reason but often tough. The false prophets of Ezekiel’s day continued to tell the people what they wanted to hear, ‘peace for Jerusalem’ instead of telling them to build a wall and protect themselves and to prepare for battle and exile.

When they did say build a wall it wasn’t for protection and war and didn’t come from the Lord, it came from their selfishness and came with deception and decoration to make people feel good about themselves and their situation. The person receiving good news pays much better than the one hearing bad news. Verses 14-16 read,

“And I will break down the wall that you have smeared with whitewash, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you shall perish in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 15 Thus will I spend my wrath upon the wall and upon those who have smeared it with whitewash, and I will say to you, The wall is no more, nor those who smeared it, 16 the prophets of Israel who prophesied concerning Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her, when there was no peace, declares the Lord God.”

The Lord will not be manipulated. We can’t force Him to keep promises He didn’t make. He loves us too much for that. He’ll destroy the false promises we seek instead of Him and He will destroy the people who claim His word when He didn’t speak. Why does He take such offense to speaking for Him when He didn’t say it? Because although what He has to say is not always what we want to hear, it is always to bring us to Him. When people hear a false message, no matter how innocuous it may seem it can cause them to reject the Truth of Christ and seek a lie like prosperity or a false god who they may think is Jesus but is not the Word, the Truth, the Way, or the Life Himself. Lying to people, sugar-coating God’s Word, and speaking from our own heart rather than the Lord’s heart leads people to die. Verses 17-19 read,

“And you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own hearts. Prophesy against them 18 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the women who sew magic bands upon all wrists, and make veils for the heads of persons of every stature, in the hunt for souls! Will you hunt down souls belonging to my people and keep your own souls alive? 19 You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, putting to death souls who should not die and keeping alive souls who should not live, by your lying to my people, who listen to lies.”

God’s word is meant to encourage the righteous to stay the course. It is meant to move the lost to Jesus. It is meant to stop the wicked from their ways. When we give people words from our hearts and minds instead of God’s we lead them astray and that can lead to death. God will deal harshly with people who use His name wrongly. He will not let them continue to lie and lead people to Hell. Verses 22-23 read,

“Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life, 23 therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. And you shall know that I am the Lord.”

It can be tempting to offer the person going through a terrible time some easy words like “If God brought you to it, He’ll bring you through it.” or “God will not give you any more than you can handle.” But those encouraging little phrases can keep a person from calling on Jesus. Telling a person “God will heal you, He doesn’t want His children to be sick, can make a person think there is a promise that God didn’t make. Rather than calling out to the Lord God, they will call out to false prophet for some more greeting card phrases and in the end be encouraged all the way to Hell with a smile on their face.

Ezekiel Chapter 12 Sugar-Coated Positive Messages Don't Save. Jesus Saves.

Ezekiel Chapter 12

In this chapter the Lord gave Ezekiel a prophecy about Judah and her prince going into exile. But He began the word with this declaration in verse 2,

“Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house.”

The Lord knew that the people would choose not to listen or believe but He showed them anyway. He showed them because He wanted them to listen. He wanted them to take it seriously and heed His word. He wanted them to be saved. Ezekiel did everything God told him to do and the next the day, the Lord said, “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’  Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God…” (Verses 9-10a). God then proceeded to explain the prophecy to Ezekiel so that he could explain it to whomever asked. Verses 14-16 read,

“And I will scatter toward every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops, and I will unsheathe the sword after them. 15 And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I disperse them among the nations and scatter them among the countries. 16 But I will let a few of them escape from the sword, from famine and pestilence, that they may declare all their abominations among the nations where they go, and may know that I am the Lord.”

The few who listened, who took the Lord seriously and acknowledged their sin would be saved. But the majority of the people who supported the prince instead of seeking God would be exiled or die from war, disease, or hunger.

True prophets were not popular among the people. They didn’t give positive flowery messages. They pointed out the evil and told people to repent. They warned people of the impending trouble that awaited them because of their sin. They were not only unpopular but they were laughed at or ignored. Verses 21-23 read,

“And the word of the Lord came to me: 22 “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’? 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel.’ But say to them, The days are near, and the fulfillment of every vision.”

The attitude of Israel that the prophecies fulfillment were so far off as to not be a concern reminds me of the attitude of many people today. I’ve heard people say that the Bible needs a dictionary to define the word ‘soon’ since it’s been two thousand years and the events that it claims will happen soon still haven’t happened. They ignore all prophecies that have come to fruition. They laugh at the idea of the Day of Judgment, of a God who requires payment for sin, and the existence of sin at all.

Yet God still loves them. He still wants them to be saved. He still calls us to go to them, make disciples, and teach them to obey. He still wants them to know Him. One day every person will know He is LORD, whether it is because they finally heard the message and believed or they face Him on their knees in terror on that Day. The Day will come and it is coming soon. God will do what He has said He would do. Verses 24-25 say,

“For there shall be no more any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 For I am the Lord; I will speak the word that I will speak, and it will be performed. It will no longer be delayed, but in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it, declares the Lord God.”

It isn’t up to us to decide if people will listen. It is up to us to obey the Lord and speak the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them and let them have the opportunity to accept or refuse Him. It is up to us to reject sin, idolatry, and false religion, not call it harmless and propagate it ourselves.

People can’t know how awful these sugar-coated ideas are if we are accepting them and even passing them along as well. They are made sweet so people will receive them, but they are lies. They flatter so that people will believe them but they are abominations. People need the truth. The truth comes from God and it is covered in Jesus’ blood, it points out our weakness, our sin, and our desperate need of Him. It doesn’t cajole with positive ‘hang in there’ messages. It exhorts with “recognize your need, call on Jesus, and repent.” It says, “You can’t save yourself let go and fall into God’s capable hands. It is beautiful only after we accept it and realize the awesome exquisiteness and magnificence of God’s complete grace.

People’s reactions are not your problem, your actions are your concern. Tell them the truth and let them decide to be deaf and blind or hearing and seeing.

Ezekiel Chapter 11 Don't Believe Anyone Who Says God Doesn't Judge

2/25/2015

Ezekiel Chapter 11

How often have you been told God doesn’t judge, or God wouldn’t send anyone to Hell? How often do you hear people say the End Times are far off, the Tribulation isn’t our concern, or even that the End of Days is just a fantasy? The people spreading those lies may full-well believe them, but they are dangerous and lead people into an illusory life following an imaginary god all the way to Hell.

The Lord had something to say to those kind of people in Ezekiel’s day and it stands true today as well. When any of us claim to speak God’s words, wisdom, or advice we ought to be very sure we are speaking the truth and not what the people want to hear. We don’t tell our children it is okay to play on the highway just because we do not want to upset them, and we don’t want to tell others that the consequences of sin are anything but death just so they will still like us. It is more important to tell them the truth because God loves them and wants them to know Him and live.

In Jerusalem the leaders were telling people that Jerusalem was safe, beyond God’s reproach, and His judgments were far off in the future and had no effect on them. The Lord had worse judgments in mind for those people. They thought Jerusalem was their protection and taught that people could ignore God’s statutes, words, and warnings. Verses 8-12 record some of the Lord’s response to them.

“You have feared the sword, and I will bring the sword upon you, declares the Lord God. 9 And I will bring you out of the midst of it, and give you into the hands of foreigners, and execute judgments upon you. 10 You shall fall by the sword. I will judge you at the border of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 11 This city shall not be your cauldron, nor shall you be the meat in the midst of it. I will judge you at the border of Israel, 12 and you shall know that I am the Lord. For you have not walked in my statutes, nor obeyed my rules, but have acted according to the rules of the nations that are around you.”

When the Lord spoke those words through Ezekiel, one of the men spreading the bad advice died. Ezekiel was really upset and cried out to God, “Ah, Lord God! Will you make a full end of the remnant of Israel?” (Verse 13). But God answered Him with some great encouragement. First the Lord told Ezekiel that some people needed chastisement and would get the punishment they deserved. What kind of loving Father would He be if He let evil go unpunished? The people who had stayed in Jerusalem and received the blessings had acted as if they deserved that goodness and rather than become closer to God they swelled up with pride and left Him. But some of those who had been exiled had taken it seriously and remained loyal to the Lord. God’s promise for them is also a promise for those who earnestly seek Him today and is recorded in verses 17-21.

“Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.’ 18 And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. 19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 21 But as for those whose heart goes after their detestable things and their abominations, I will bring their deeds upon their own heads, declares the Lord God.”

The people who had not abandoned the Lord were not perfect. They had stubborn natures. They didn’t get it all right. They probably disagreed about a few things. But the Lord promised to give them one heart, a new spirit, and to replace their hearts of stone with living teachable hearts of flesh. It is God who made it possible for them to walk in His law, not the impossible 613 laws but in His will and word to Love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength and to love their neighbor as themselves.

He makes it possible for you and me as well. All He needs is our willingness to seek Him and His will above everything else. He gives us the faith, the moldable heart, and the ability to obey. What is God’s will? It is that you call on Jesus to be your savior so that you can know Him, and He can be your God and you can be His child. He wants a relationship with you. He wants you to become like Jesus and because of who you are make Him known to the world who needs Him. He loves you. He loves your neighbor. Let Him be God and see how He will change you, employ you, and love you.

The truth is that judgment is coming. One Day Jesus will return and it will be too late for anyone to make a choice. Now is the time to decide. Now is the day of salvation. Don’t listen to people who tell you Hell isn’t real. Do not tolerate the foolishness that a loving god wouldn’t judge or punish. Today is the day to call on Jesus. When the Day of Judgment arrives it will be too late and it is coming.

Ezekiel 10 The LORD May Withdraw His Presence but He Will Always Be With You

Ezekiel Chapter 10

This chapter continues Ezekiel’s vision of Jerusalem’s destruction. Verses 1-2 read,

“Then I looked, and behold, on the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire, in appearance like a throne. 2 And he said to the man clothed in linen, “Go in among the whirling wheels underneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.”

And he went in before my eyes.”

The Glory of God, His presence rose up out of the threshold of the temple and appeared above the cherubim in preparation to leave the temple. But before He went, He ordered that coals be taken from the between the cherubim and scattered over the city. Immediately I thought of Isaiah Chapter 6 when the burning coal is touched to Isaiah’s lips to atone his sins. The coals would burn the city, yes but they would also cleanse the idolatry, the dross, and the other impurities out of the city.

The chapter also describes the worst possible judgment for Jerusalem. Verses 18-19 read,

“Then the glory of the Lord went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim. 19 And the cherubim lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth before my eyes as they went out, with the wheels beside them. And they stood at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the Lord, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.”

The Lord left the temple, His presence had resided there since it was dedicated but He left. Because of the abomination of the idolatry, the temple was no longer sanctified, no longer holy, and the Lord would not let His glory be among anything unholy.

Would the priests notice? Had they noticed when they themselves defiled the temple? Would the people notice?

The Lord promises us He will never leave us nor forsake us. Hebrews 13:5-6 says,

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
    I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

But He does withdraw at times. He doesn’t leave, He just hides Himself, His will and His manifestation from us. He doesn’t pull away to be cruel. He is God. He is never cruel. He is Love. He is perfect love. He does what He does for us with purpose for our own good to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. The Lord knows there are times when He must hide His face from us. Isaiah 646-7 reads,

“We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 There is no one who calls upon your name,
    who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.”

It is not that He is not with us, it is that He doesn’t make His presence clearly known to us. He is always with us, always. Why? Why would the Lord do that?

Perhaps because we have been looking elsewhere for our answers. Maybe we have been meditating on something other than the Word of God to find peace. Or maybe we have been seeking provision from the 24 hour cash loan place instead of the Lord God Almighty. Maybe we’ve been looking for love through astrology instead of the King of kings. Whatever it is, we didn’t call on the Lord. So He in His infinite wisdom and unwavering persistent love hid Himself from us and let us see how idolatry would work out for us. Don’t think that anything done can be kept secret from God. We can’t put our hope in money and think that our prayers for help fool the Lord. He is not only there when we pray but always. In Jeremiah 23:23-24 the LORD says,

“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.”

When God steps back it is in order for us to learn and call on Him again. He is always with us. He always sees us. He always knows our needs. But we do not always know our needs. He loves us enough to teach us those things. The Lord is waiting for us to rouse ourselves to take hold of Him, to call on His name. When we do that we know He is there. James 4:8-10 reads,

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

Do you feel as if God is far away from you? He is not. Maybe it is you who is far from God. Perhaps you’ve sought your sanctuary, your provision, your peace, and your joy elsewhere and so the Lord is allowing you to do that. The good people find outside of the Lord may look wonderful but it is temporary. Psalm 73-23-28 reads,

“Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
    you hold my right hand.
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

27 For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.
28 But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord God my refuge,
that I may tell of all your works.

I encourage you today to stop finding answers outside of God. Stop seeking the comfort of the world and call on Him. He is with you, waiting for you to call on Him. Let Him be your Almighty God.

Ezekiel Chapter 9 God Sees the Faithful

Ezekiel Chapter 9

In chapter 8 Ezekiel saw a vision of atrocious idolatry from blatant to secret to the vilest. Blasphemy and abominations will happen more and more until the Tribulation.  In chapter 9 he saw God’s reaction. The Lord called for the executioners to come, each with his weapon. Six men came each with a weapon for slaughter in his hand. Along with those angels came a man clothed in linen with a writing case at his waist. Verses 3-4 read,

“Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub on which it rested to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writing case at his waist. 4 And the Lord said to him, “Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.”

Although furious and ready to release His wrath on Jerusalem, the Lord remembered those who remembered Him, who knew that the idolatry taking place was vile. Those people prayed with sighs and groans because it was just too horrible for words. So in the midst of His ferocity, the Lord showed mercy and the man clothed in linen, like a priest who had the writing case at his waist like an attorney or mediator went with the cherubim to mark the people who had not gone astray from the Lord.

The mercy of the Lord is manifested in Jesus Christ. And those who call on Him are sealed with the Holy Spirit.  2 Corinthians 1:20-22 read,

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Many of the people committing the abominations blamed God for their sin and said He had forsaken them. (Ezekiel 8:12). But those who refused to give in to idolatry trusted God and knew He would never break His promises. They were saved from the judgments that came upon the rest.

Our God would not be our loving holy God if He were to let sin go. Everyone has to pay the price for the sins they have committed. Either they pay with their own blood, or let Jesus pay with His. Ezekiel was seeing first-hand the horror of that payment coming due. Verses 7-8 read,

“Then he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out.” So they went out and struck in the city. 8 And while they were striking, and I was left alone, I fell upon my face, and cried, “Ah, Lord God! Will you destroy all the remnant of Israel in the outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?”

Ezekiel cared about the people who were being destroyed. He cared about Israel. He cared about Jerusalem. Jerusalem represented the few who had been spared from Babylonian captivity, they were the remnant meant to carry on until the captives returned. But when bad things happened they turned from the Lord and worshipped false gods and practiced false religions. The relationship they had with God was one-sided. God loved them. He kept His vows. But they were unfaithful to Him every chance they got.  Verses 9-10 read,

“Then he said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of blood, and the city full of injustice. For they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see.’ 10 As for me, my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity; I will bring their deeds upon their heads.”

Sin has a price. It must be paid. It would be utterly detestable to imagine a god who let evil go unchecked, who didn’t punish wickedness. God loves us enough to make a way to a relationship with Him, to make a way of forgiving and paying the price for our sins. He sent Jesus to pay the price for us. When we accept the gift of grace by making Jesus our Lord, giving Him our lives then He gives us His Holy Spirit. He seals us and keeps us for His promises. No longer do we have to worry about condemnation. We are judged as blameless even though we don’t deserve it, because Jesus covered us with His righteousness or goodness.

God will not overlook those who remain faithful to Him when the time of adjudication comes. Verse 11 reads,

“And behold, the man clothed in linen, with the writing case at his waist, brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded me.”

The man, Jesus our mediator marked all the faithful, He sealed them with the Holy Spirit and they would not be killed with the majority who had not been faithful to the LORD.

It is so important to remain diligent about your relationship with God. What baggage have you brought into the relationship? Give it to Him. Be persistent in keeping your relationship pure. Remain faithful. Remember who God is.

Ezekiel Chapter 8 Abominations in the Temple

2/15/2015

Ezekiel Chapter 8 describes a vision of abominations in the Temple. For us now, we can see the importance of keeping our relationship with the Lord pure, not bringing anything else into it. But it is also a warning to remain stalwart in keeping that relationship unadulterated as the end times are on us and the Tribulation looms closer.

While Ezekiel was in his house with the Elders of Judah sitting before him, God lifted him into a vision. First God showed the prophet the gates to the courts of the Temple and there was an image of idolatry set up there. What a horrific atrocity! But it got worse. There was a hole in the wall of the court. It was a small hole that would allow someone to spy on the secret activities that took place behind the wall in the private chambers of the priests. God told Ezekiel to dig through the hole and it became a wide enough to enter.

Upon entering Ezekiel was shocked to see images of creeping things, loathsome beasts, and all idols engraved on the walls. But not only that, seventy of the elders each with a censer and incense were worshipping the various idols and images. They were in the private areas of the Temple doing these secret things. Verses 12-13 read,

“Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in his room of pictures? For they say, ‘The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 He said also to me, “You will see still greater abominations that they commit.”

Each man thought he was hiding his idolatry and evil from everyone, including the Lord. They had no faith that God had not left them and turned to carved pictures, false gods, and wooded idols. They kept it all hidden as if only what other people saw was important. When something is kept secret, it is not hidden from God. Sin flourishes in the dark. One would think that was as repugnant as their sin could get. But it got worse.

At the North Gate the women wept and prayed to a false God, Tammuz introduced by the Babylonians. Worse still, inside the courts twenty five men worshipped, not God, but the Sun. They had their backs turned away from the altar toward the east. Verses 17-18 read,

“Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations that they commit here, that they should fill the land with violence and provoke me still further to anger? Behold, they put the branch to their nose. 18 Therefore I will act in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.”

It was too obscene. God’s jealousy ignited His wrath and it couldn’t be contained. Ezekiel’s vision continues in subsequent chapters and it is very clear that the vision is of the End Times and Tribulation. But we have to take warning now. It is really easy to take a little something from a pagan god, religion or belief and because it seems harmless allow it to become part of your belief system. It is not harmless. When we add other beliefs to the Word, it is no longer the Word. We are creating a god of our own liking.

Ezekiel’s vision took him from the gates to the inner most parts of the Temple. The outside where everyone could see called people not to worship the Lord, but idols. A display like that makes people think those practices are okay. If this celebrity who is famous for his Christianity is flagrantly using symbols for a pagan religion, then how many people will follow his twisted doctrines to hell? In the women’s court they followed a ritual introduced by the Babylonians. It is too easy to take Non-Christian doctrine and meld it into our lives. Numerology, Astrology, and Illuminati have all found their ways into our systems. And many haven’t noticed or cared. In the private chambers of the priests, they clandestinely worshipped images. They kept their sin to themselves, but lied to God’s face. They even blamed God for their actions when it was their own lack of faith that led to the treachery. That would seem the ultimate adultery.

But the ultimate betrayal was bringing it to the most sacred of places, God’s altar. It would be like cheating on your spouse in your marital bed, and inviting him to watch. The Lord will not accept it. The Day of Judgment is coming. The Tribulation is coming. We have to be diligent about our relationship with the Lord. We have to keep it uncorrupted. God is holy.

We don’t need anything extra. God is omnipotent. He is awesome. We don’t have to pull from other practices and beliefs, we only have to seek Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and His righteousness. We only have to trust Him.

Examine your heart and life. Are you allowing other practices to soil your relationship with the Lord? Are you doing some things in private, because your church family wouldn’t understand or agree? Are you worshipping the One True Living God or perhaps a god of your own creation?

Repent now, while there is time.

Ezekiel 7 The Day of Judgment

2/14/2015

Ezekiel chapter 7 is God’s warning to Israel of her utter destruction, a judgment so complete that God says it is the end, The Day of Judgment. Verses 8-9 say it this way.

“Now I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you, and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. 9 And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the Lord, who strikes.”

The Lord said, no one will be able to escape it or fight it. They are not strong enough or rich enough to survive, much less fight. All those who count on their strength to win for them are wrong. Anyone who hopes their honor will keep them safe are mistaken. Everyone who thinks money can sustain them find it useless. The Lord God is more powerful. Verses 17-19 read,

“All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water.18 They put on sackcloth, and horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and baldness on all their heads. 19 They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity.”

People find it so much easier to put their faith in their reputations and take pride in their accomplishments rather than God. People pursue money and think it can solve every problem. But rather than solve problems money like pride becomes their downfall, and they remain blind to it. Even religion has been twisted into obscenity. The pure relationship between Father God and His people has dirtied and made into something gross with idolatry, legalism, and self-righteousness. Verses 20-22 read,

“His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore I make it an unclean thing to them. 21 And I will give it into the hands of foreigners for prey, and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and they shall profane it. 22 I will turn my face from them, and they shall profane my treasured place. Robbers shall enter and profane it.”

Times are getting crazy, the economy, the violence, the wars, the terror, and the chaos surround us. People want answers. A few may look to The LORD God, but most look for answers that won’t hurt their pride nor call for repentance. They want to feel good about themselves and repentance calls for us to say, “I’m no good. I can’t do it. I have sinned. I need Jesus.” Verse 25-26 read,

“When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. 26 Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders.”

The Day of Judgment is coming and everyone will be judged. No one will escape that day. Each will face it. Too many will realize too late that they were wrong. They ignored the Lord and they will be sorry, but it will be too late. Being sorry once you’re caught is only being sorry you were caught. Verse 27 says,

“The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.”

Money, strength, reputation, nor religion cannot save anyone from that day. Only repentance and faith in Jesus Christ can save anyone. One day it will be too late to call on His name. Today is the day to repent from sin. Very soon is the day of the Lord’s wrath, the Day of Judgment. Today is the today of Salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 says it this way,

“Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Are you trusting your money to get you through the tough times? Are you putting faith in feel-good beliefs? Do you think the military can keep you safe? Or do you put your faith in the Lord God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Do you know it is He and only He who can save you, make you clean, and keep you? Does your neighbor know? Have you give him the chance to hear the truth and make a choice for the Lord before it is too late?

Ezekiel 6 Who Do You Love First? What are your Priorities?

2/13/2015

Ezekiel Chapter 6

Israel has a long history of worshipping the gods of other nations. For as long as they sought other gods, The LORD has warned them against it, taken action to discipline them, and hated it. God is a jealous God. He hates idolatry. He detests when His children put anything in front of Him. He is the One and Only God.

Idolatry is, in its simplest definition worship of or devotion to something other than Adonai. The first commandment God handed down to Moses said,

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

This is the only one commandment of the ten that came with a promise of punishment for those who broke it and a promise of reward for those who kept it. God takes our relationship with Him seriously and He wants the same fidelity returned.

The sixth chapter of Ezekiel speaks about Israel’s idolatry and what God would do to them because of it. Even the land showed signs of Israel’s idolatry. Verses 1-4 read,

“The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them, 3 and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God! Thus says the Lord God to the mountains and the hills, to the ravines and the valleys: Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places. 4 Your altars shall become desolate, and your incense altars shall be broken, and I will cast down your slain before your idols.”

God destroyed the altars, the high places, and every place of worship for false gods. And since those gods didn’t exist except in the minds of the worshippers, they were annihilated. The people too were killed and strewed before the altars like sacrifices. Why would God do that? Because He loves His people and wants a pure relationship with His children. Verse 7 reads,

“And the slain shall fall in your midst, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

But not all the people would be destroyed. The Lord scattered remaining Israel among the nations. Verses 9-10 read,

“then those of you who escape will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations. 10 And they shall know that I am the Lord. I have not said in vain that I would do this evil to them.”

God not only hates idolatry, but He wants us to hate it too. He wants us to be just as angered at the thought of something coming between Him and us as He is. He wants to be not only a priority but THE priority. We have so many excuses for letting things get in the way of our relationship with The Father, our jobs, our families, even our service. We have to make money and provide. We have to do this or that or will not get done. But God is God! He is All-Powerful, Wonderful, Awesome, and LORD. He promised us this in Matthew 6:31-34

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

If we seek God first, He’ll take care of the rest. God knows we need clothes and food. God knows we love our families. God knows we want security and shelter. Don’t we trust Him enough to be God?

God’s love for us is passionate. His love burns eternally and fervently. His anger is also passionate. He is slow to anger but He does get angry. One day His wrath will be shown so the whole world will know it. The Day of Judgment is coming. Do not be caught on that day with anyone or anything but Jesus Christ in the throne of your life.

Examine your heart and life. Is there something you are devoted to that takes precedence in your life? Is it your career, family, lifestyle, reputation, or ministry? Is it a sports team, celebrity, or hobby? Whatever it is, take it out of God’s throne before God decides it is time to let you know He is the LORD. Go ahead and trust Him to be God.

Ezekiel Chapter 5 God Disciplines Those He Loves

2/12/2015

Ezekiel chapter 5 is a description of the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Chaldeans. Before Ezekiel told the captives this prophecy he had to shave his head and beard with a sword. He had to weigh the hair out and destroy a third of it in the fire in the midst of the city, strike a third of it with the sword, and scatter a third part to the wind. But he was also to take a small part of the hair and bind them in the skirts of his robe, then take a part of that hair and burn it in the fire. God said, “From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.” (Verse 4).

God is always precise in His actions. He didn’t decide willy nilly to punish. He knew exactly who, how many, and how He was judging. Ezekiel had to shave all his hair, not just trim it. That meant that the judgment was a purging not just a refining. No one in Jerusalem would escape God’s judgment but a few would be kept there.

Then Ezekiel was told to give the captives God’s prophecy. The prophecy begins with the reasons the Lord was going to do this. Verses 5-6 read,

“Thus says the Lord God: This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6 And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes.”

God had given Israel this country. He had given her His Law and His covenant, yet they rebelled and rejected them. They behaved in a fashion worse than the surrounding nations, who didn’t have the benefit of God’s guidance and Law. They were not the example of His people that they could have been, so God was going to punish them and make them an example to all the nations. Verse 9-12 describe the judgments.

“Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will withdraw. My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12 A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.”

God was very angry. And Israel’s punishment was going to be worse than anyone had ever seen before. Why? Because Israel was His people. They were His people and He was their God. Imagine two children are misbehaving badly. They have broken your number one rule.  One child is the neighbor and the other is your son. You don’t get nearly as upset with the neighbor as you do with your son. And when you punish them, it is to send the neighbor home but your child receives the brunt of your discipline and anger. In your love for him, your emotions burn brighter than when you dealt with someone else’s child. His behavior reflects on you. You want the best for him, so you punishment for your own child will be more harsh. That is how it is for God and His children. He loves us enough to discipline us.

There are some offenses that can’t be corrected with a time-out and a talk. Sometimes an act needs something harsher, something that says the transgression weighs heavier than another. Sometimes we find the time-outs are just not working. It is in those cases that discipline requires more than a reprimand. Israel had done abominations against God. They had behaved worse than even the heathen nations. God was finished with the warnings and the lectures. He had to punish them.

We will be an example to the world. Whether we are a reflection of Jesus or an illustration of disobedience, our lives are a testimony. If we are obedient then discipline need not be difficult. But if we are rebellious and stubborn then God will care enough to do what He must. If we refuse to let His discipline train us, then God will use it to teach others.
