1 Thessalonians 2 How to Share the Gospel even if You're not an Evangelist

8/26/2015

1 Thessalonians 2

I know that many believers are afraid to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with people. Or at least many are very anxious about it. I understand that trepidation. But whether not we are gifted with evangelism, it is still a command of Jesus to us, and it is a core purpose and manifestation of love and our response to our own salvation. Matthew 28:18-20 reads,

“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

But many of us, leave evangelism to the two people in our church who are gifted. We say we don’t know how. Many of us associate evangelism with knocking on doors and asking, “If you were to die tonight, where would you go?” Many of us associate sharing the Gospel with men on street corners carrying signs that read, “Repent Today!” But evangelism, truly witnessing to the lost is not like that at all. And as believers we not only have the compulsion to share the love of Jesus with the world, we have the ability and the authority to do so. When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He didn’t leave us. He said He would be with us until the end of the age. His Holy Spirit came to us, indwelt us and fills us. (John 14:15-17). He makes it possible for us to testify to the awesome love of The Father. Verses 1-4 read,

“For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain. 2 But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. 3 For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.”

The Lord entrusted us, He commended us with the wonderful Truth. This is a secret and a mystery to the lost, but it is not supposed to remain an enigmatic secret. Ephesians 3:4-13 says,

“When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory.”

We don’t share the gospel because we want to impress the church. We don’t testify to the Lordship of Jesus Christ to please men. We do it because The Lord loves us so deeply and we want to please Him by giving Him what He wants, which is for everyone to come to know Him. (1 Timothy 2:4, 2 Peter 3:9). And sharing the Gospel does not always mean walking up to people at the bus stop and having a pre-scripted conversation ending in leading them in the ‘sinner’s prayer.’ Sharing the Gospel is done when people see how we respond to suffering. Witnessing is done in our relationships and conversations when we deliberately bring the conversation to Jesus. Evangelism is done through our acts of love and faith to people. Verses 5-8 say,

“For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. 6 Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. 7 But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.”

When we share the gospel we are not selling something. We don’t have to cajole people to like us. We don’t need to persuade anyone with sweet-talk. We are genuinely loving, kind, and giving as The Holy Spirit has made us to be. (Galatians 5:22-24). If we love The Lord then like Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, we desire people to come to Jesus just like God does. (1 John 4:7-21). We love Him and our desires align with The Spirit of God and not with our selfish flesh. (Philippians 2:12-13).

We witness by our attitude and love toward one another. (John 13:34-35). We mentor believers and make them disciples by our love toward one another. Verses 9-12 read,

“For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. 11 For you know how, like a father with his children, 12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.”

When we witness, we don’t have to be fearful. We do not have to worry about not knowing how or what to say. The Holy Spirit will do the work. He saves, not us. The Holy Spirit emboldens us and even gives us the words to say. (Acts 4:23-31, Matthew 10:19-20). Verse 13 says,

“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.”

There is persecution for believers today and it will only get worse as time gets closer to The Day of Judgement. But that is all the more reason to spread the Gospel, people need Jesus or they will burn in Hell. We will face opposition because Satan hates people, he is our enemy and he schemes and plans to keep people from the fullness of God. (1 Peter 5:8). As, the body of Christ in a world of people who do not know Jesus we need one another and we need to remain faithful witnesses and keepers of The Gospel. The enemy and his followers will experience the wrath of God. We can snatch the lost out of his hands and lead them to Jesus. Verses 14-16 read,

“For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind16 by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!”

Do we love one another as Jesus loves us? Do we love people as Jesus loves them? If we do, we can’t let them walk to Hell without giving them a chance to know Jesus. If we do we can’t leave the newly born again as orphans without a way to know their Father more. We are responsible for dispensing the Gospel. Verses 17-20 read,

“But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, 18 because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us. 19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our glory and joy.”

First of all, love people with the Love of God. Be bold and courageous, not fearful. Trust and obey the Lord. This is not a job for 1% of the church. This is a job for 100% of the church. We were given our gifts for a reason, which is the building up of the church. (Ephesians 4:11-16). How will people know Jesus of they never hear about Him. Romans 10:13-17 reads,

“For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Psalm 64 Why Do Evil Men Prosper?

7/24/2015

1 Comment

Psalm 64

Does it seem sometimes, as Jeremiah complained that evil men prosper? Jeremiah 12:1-2 says what so many of us think from time to time.

“Righteous are you, O Lord,
    when I complain to you;
    yet I would plead my case before you.
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
    Why do all who are treacherous thrive?
2 You plant them, and they take root;
    they grow and produce fruit;
you are near in their mouth
    and far from their heart.”

We look up from walking our difficult road in choosing right to see people who don’t care about God or beneficence or goodness, running past us toward money, power, and an easy life. It can be discouraging. But we are not alone in this grievance. And we are not seeing the whole picture either. When we take our eyes of The Lord and compare ourselves to the people around us, we can become blinded by faithlessness. David’s enemies sometimes seemed to be winning in their quest to destroy him. He like Jeremiah complained about it in Verses 1-6 of the Psalm.

“Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
    preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
    from the throng of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
    who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless,
    shooting at him suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
    they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, “Who can see them?”
6     They search out injustice,
saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.”
    For the inward mind and heart of a man are deep.”

Our enemy the Liar and his followers bitterly hate us. Their hate comes out in vicious words accusing us of many wrongdoings. The enemy lies in wait for us and even though we are forgiven and righteous in Christ, he attacks us. He is determined to destroy our walk with Jesus, our testimony, and our effectiveness. Our enemy thinks we are stupid and won’t recognize his attacks. Sadly many Christians do fall for his lies, accusations, and schemes. They do not know who they are in Christ. They forget who The Lord really is. And they succumb to Satan’s attacks. They are not wearing the full armor of Christ because they don’t understand their identity in Him well enough to wear that noble armor. Paul encouraged us in Ephesians 6:10-13,

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

Armor is protective. But it must be worn deliberately and properly to be effective. We have to put it on. We have to choose to know who we are and trust who God is to avail ourselves of God’s perfect protection. Paul described the armor in Ephesians 6:14-18,

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,”

When we know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, (John 14:6) we can understand who we are in Him and combat every lie with the Truth. When we know who we are in Christ and what He has done for us we know we nothing can take the eternal life Jesus’ righteousness gave to us. When we understand who God our Redeemer is we are able to boldly be a testimony to Him, always ready with the Gospel which makes peace between God and man. When we know who Almighty God is we can have faith in Him, and then the lies and attacks of the enemy bounce off of our Shield unable to hurt us. When we know who we are in Christ, Salvation which can’t be taken from us protects our minds and souls and gives us the ability to fight back. We don’t fight with just any weapon, we don’t sling useless retorts at the enemy, we cut him down with the Word of God, the Scriptures and Jesus Christ whose very name holds immense and holy power. When we know who God is and who we are, we don’t worry, we pray in The Spirit for all the saints battling the enemy.

Satan doesn’t care about justice. He lies to people and blinds them to the consequences of sin and the cost of rejecting Christ. But our Lord God Elohim is our Justice and our Righteous Judge. He is The Truth and the Way. He is our Righteousness, our Shield, our Salvation, and our Sword. He is The LORD. Verses 7-9 describe The Justice of The Lord for us.

“But God shoots his arrow at them;
    they are wounded suddenly.
8 They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them;
    all who see them will wag their heads.
9 Then all mankind fears;
    they tell what God has brought about
    and ponder what he has done.”

God avenges us. He wounds the followers of the prince of this world. He gives them a chance to turn to Him. But whatever their choice, God’s mighty power and perfect love are demonstrated for the whole world to see. He is glorified. And more people can come to Him as we, wearing the readiness of the Gospel tell of the awesomeness of our Lord.

Why do evil men seem to prosper? So that when they fall the impact will be felt, seen, and heard by the multitudes. God will be glorified. And we will rejoice and glorify Him further. Verse 10 tells us to stop complaining and whining and rejoice instead because we know who The Lord is and we know who we are in Him.

“Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord
    and take refuge in him!
Let all the upright in heart exult!”

Psalm 62 Who is Your Rock?

7/22/2015

Psalm 62

Where does you hope sit? In whom does your faith rest? Do you put your confidence in money? Do you put your expectation on family? Do you look to the government to fulfill promises? Do you look for help in people or possessions? None of that can ever meet all your needs, hopes, and yearnings wholly. Only God can perfectly give you what you need, satisfy every promise He made, and give you the desires of your heart. He answers every request perfectly and in your best interest. There is only one God and He is enough.

David knew this. He had money, power, an army at his disposal, trusted friends, and women. But He didn’t depend on any of that to conquer his enemies, to satisfy his longings, or rule a nation. He looked to the One True and Living God. Verses 1-2 read,

“For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

Our prayers, our fellowship with the Lord shouldn’t be a one sided conversation. It should have sufficient time of silence, waiting for The Lord, listening to The Spirit’s counsel, and wordlessly giving The God of Justice our hearts. David had many enemies who viciously tried to remove him from his position, who fought against Israel, and who would want nothing more than see him dead.

We have one enemy and he prowls like a roaring lion hunting his prey. (1 Peter 5:6-11). The people he uses are not our enemy they are his prisoners in a war they are oblivious to. The devil makes them think we are their enemies. But it is only him and his minions, who are our true enemies. He is scheming. Verses 3-4 read,

“How long will all of you attack a man
    to batter him,
    like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
    They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah

Satan, our adversary attacks the children of The Lord ferociously. The stronger we are in Christ the more afraid he becomes and the harder he will attack. He wants us to be ineffectual. He wants us to forget who we are. We are royal priests, distinctive, and holy. We belong to Awesome God. (1 Peter 2:9-10). We are the children of Holy Mighty God. (John 1:12-13). We are citizens of Heaven. We are the bride of Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:2-3, Revelation 19:6-9).

The devil tries hard to knock us of the foundation of Christ. He lies to us about our identity. He accuses us of wrongs. He twists words and uses partial scripture out of context to try and hurt us. The devil is called the accuser (Revelation 12:9-12) and he is a liar! (John 8:42-45).

We don’t believe the devil. We do not listen to his lies and accusations. We don’t give in to the temptations he dangles to lead us astray. We depend on The Lord God. We know He is Our Victorious Lord of Angel Armies. He is awesome! So we can rest in Him as conquerors. Verses 5-8 read,

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah”

What is it that God of Truth has told us? Who are we in Christ? We know we are a royal priesthood, distinctive citizens of Heaven, children of God, and the bride of Christ. But we are also victorious. We are conquerors with Jesus. United completely with Him and nothing can separate us from Him. He loves us deeply. He is our refuge and our firm foundation. Even the most turbulent earthquake cannot shake us off of the Rock on which we stand. (Romans 8:31-39).

The devil lies, he accuses us of horrible wrongs. But God doesn’t. He brings convicts the lost but then sets us free, He never again considers our sins. If someone is condemning us, accusing us, and filling us with guilt it is not The Lord. The Lord condemned sin and doomed the devil to eternal hell. He rescued believers and set us free. Romans 8:1-4 reads,

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit”

Our wealth or poverty means nothing in the Kingdom of God. Our power and position in the world have no bearing in the Kingdom of God. The world is temporary. Our physical lives are merely a breath compared to eternity. It is Eternal Holy God, our Savior, and our Wonderful Advocate who matters. Our brief life is an opportunity to glorify Him and effect the Kingdom of God by demonstrating the Love of God to everyone, rich or poor, prince or pauper, believer or prisoner. Verses 9-10 say,

“Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion;
    set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.”

We will all be judged on the same criterion. It will not be how good or bad we were. It will not be how many people we led to Christ or how many people we killed. It will be only whether or not we covered by Jesus’ righteousness. Did we accept or reject Christ? That is the only measure that matters.

We can put our hope in money, but money cannot save us. We can put our faith in power but the power of the world is nothing compared to God. Seeking more worldly money, power, and influence gains us nothing. We set our hearts on God. We put our hope in Jesus. We set our feet firmly on the Rock. We let God be God. We are still and we know that He is God and we know who we are in Christ.

Verses 11-12 read,

“Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12     and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
    according to his work.”

Power is God’s. And the only thing that will matter when we face Him is did we make Jesus our Lord and did we put our faith in His resurrection. That is the choice that gives us eternal life or eternal hell. When we accept Christ, we enter God’s rest. We don’t worry. The enemy is defeated. He can’t hurt us unless we allow him to do so.

 But there is another judgement. This judgement doesn’t affect salvation but it will show us how much we allowed the devil to keep us from God. This judgement tells us where we chose to store our treasures. Was it on Earth or in Heaven? 1 Corinthians 3-10-15 reads,

“According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.”

Trusting The Lord leads us to glorify Him and brings people to Him. It is by our dependence on Him and our unity with Him that we pour out His love on the desperate prisoners of war and on the suffering brothers who try to fight the enemy alone. Our works which depend on God lead to eternal treasures. Our dependence on self, money, and earthly power leads to unproductive and futile accomplishments that will burn away on The Day of Fire.

Where is your hope? Where are your treasures? Is your life glorifying God or pleasing Satan?

Psalm 58 Only The Lord is Elohim our Judge

7/18/2015

Psalm 58

This Psalm, a miktam of David is entitled God Who Judges the Earth. It is supposed to be God who is the judge, not man. Yet so many people put themselves in His place and condemn, punish, and kill as if they have the right, as if they have never sinned. Leaders make sweeping decisions for people and someone is always hurt by their choices. If they swear to uphold group a, group b is forgotten and vice versa. But they are never trampled by their own rulings. They always reap the gain from the people’s loss.

Verses 1-2 read,

“Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?
    Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
    your hands deal out violence on earth.”

The people who make themselves judge by doling out slanted justice elevate themselves to a false position of god. They think they have a right to magistrate. But they can’t hand out justice properly, they can’t judge uprightly, because their hearts are flawed. They like all of us are born sinners. We all plan evil. We all scheme selfishly. And those who elevate themselves to be judge, dispense a skewed justice. They become murderers. They take vengeance on themselves and somehow think it is their right to spew their false piety, anger, hate, and viciousness over everyone.

We are all born sinners. None of us has the right to allocate justice while we ourselves are unjust. None of us has the right to judge because we deserve judgment. Verses 3-5 read,

“The wicked are estranged from the womb;
    they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
    like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers
    or of the cunning enchanter.”

We are all born imperfect and capable of evil. But we don’t have to stay that way. The Father calls us to Him. Jesus can give us His righteousness. The Holy Spirit can conform us to Christ’s image. But some people can’t make The Lord their God, because they have raised themselves up to be their own gods. They think they are in charge of their own lives, but these gods are slaves to Satan, the prince of this world. They spread their poison like deadly snakes who kill with one bite. And like the adder those lethal serpents keep spreading their poisonous lies. Their own agenda is fragile and can’t stand up to arguments. Their pride makes them deaf. They refuse to hear anyone for fear that their image will be destroyed.

But they like everyone on this earth will be judged by the One God Elohim. He is our Creator and Judge. Only He has the authority to avenge, judge, condemn, or absolve. Verses 6-7 describe the punishment the wicked judges will receive.

“O God, break the teeth in their mouths;
    tear out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
7 Let them vanish like water that runs away;
    when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted.”

God breaks their teeth making them harmless. They can’t rip apart their prey or even wound without their teeth. And though in the worldly sense they may cause the believer pain and suffering, they have no real power to wound us. They are like their haughty prince, the devil, whom Peter described as a prowling lion. He encouraged believers not to freak out and fear him, but to remain calm and act. 1 Peter 5:6-11 says,

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

The devil is like a roaring lion, but he has no teeth when it comes to followers of Jesus Christ. Whatever pains he might cause are temporary. We can resist him because of our faith in Our Awesome God, The Lion of Judah who is worthy and conquered the devil. Revelation 5:1-5 reads,

“Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

It is God, Elohim, who judges. Only He is worthy. Vengeance is His. (Deuteronomy 32:35-36). His Judgment will bring eternal punishment and death to the wicked. It will be as if they never existed. Verses 8-9 read,

“Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime,
    like the stillborn child who never sees the sun.
9 Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns,
    whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away!”

But for us who make Jesus our Lord and are credited with His righteousness judgement brings eternal life and the Kingdom of Heaven. He gives it to us now before Judgement Day so that we can glorify Him and so that the lost can be found and declare Jesus is Lord. Verses 10-11 read,

“The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;
    he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Mankind will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous;
    surely there is a God who judges on earth.”

Who is your God? Is He Elohim? Is Jesus your righteousness? Are you indwelled with God’s Awesome Holy Spirit? Or are you your own god judging the world with an unworthy and sinful heart. With Jesus as our Lord and The Holy Spirit within us we are given the authority to forgive, and to bless. (John 20:21-23). But we leave judgement up to Jesus. We may discern sin and error in a fellow believer and help him back, but this is not the judgement of God who judges finally and completely with all authority. (John 5:25-29, James 4:10-12).

Psalm 56 Put Your Trust in God

7/16/2015

Psalm 56

David went through trial after trial in his life. Over the years many people not only wished bad for him, they tried to capture and kill him. When we are friends with God, when we belong to Him and our hearts align with His, people will come up against us. They will try to hurt us in any way they can. Their prince, Satan wants us stifled. The accuser of the brethren doesn’t want us to use the power of God at our disposal. He prefers us to sit ignorant or terrified. But he can’t touch us spiritually. He can only hurt us physically through the lost who belong to him. (1 John 5:18-19). The more of God’s gifts, power and authority we exhibit and the more we resemble Christ, the more eager Satan is to suppress us.

When David wrote this Psalm called a Miktam, he had been captured by the Philistines at Gath. Verses 1-4 read,

“Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
2 my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
3 When I am afraid,
    I put my trust in you.
4 In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
    What can flesh do to me?”

When we are afraid because it seems no matter where we turn enemies surround us, like David we put our trust in God. We can trust Him. We can praise Him in the midst of troubles. We can thank Him for our deliverance. We can do all that because we know who God is. We know what He has done and what He has promised He will do. We know we can trust Him so thoroughly because God’s promises are so certain we can count them as already done. After all what can people do to us? They can’t separate us from God. They can’t steal our joy or rob us of salvation. Why should we be afraid of mere flesh and bone? Why should we be afraid of Satan and his weak attempts to stop us?

David’s enemies went after him with the intent to stop him permanently. They knew he was a powerful military leader. They knew he was gifted, smart, and clever. They could see God’s anointing and calling on him. It made them more determined to stopping him. Verses 5-7 tell us some of the evil people did to David.

“All day long they injure my cause;
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They stir up strife, they lurk;
    they watch my steps,
    as they have waited for my life.
7 For their crime will they escape?
    In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!”

David had reason to fear for his life. In 1 Samuel 27:1 David’s fear is expressed. He kept this fear to himself. It was between David and The Lord.

“Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.”

The Lord answered David. He cared deeply about David and He cares deeply about us. He doesn’t enjoy the suffering we experience. He doesn’t abandon us while we suffer. Verses 8-11 say it like this,

“You have kept count of my tossings;
    put my tears in your bottle.
    Are they not in your book?
9 Then my enemies will turn back
    in the day when I call.
    This I know, that God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?”

God knows when we struggle and He doesn’t forget the difficulties we face. He knows we cry. He cares. We can know that the enemy will not win. The enemy will pay for his reign of terror over the earth, for his attempts to hurt us, and for his hatred of The Lord and His children. In verse 9 David said, “This I know, that God is for me.” Believer, God is for us too! And we know if that we know we have nothing to fear at all. In Romans 8:31-39 Paul says it this way,

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Paul quoted Psalm 44:22. It is for The Lord’s sake we are being hunted and killed. Satan wants to destroy us, not because of who we are but for who we are in Christ. But he can only accuse us. He can only tempt us. He cannot take our victory, he cannot take our salvation, and he cannot take us away from God.

We have already won. Satan was conquered when Jesus laid down His life on the cross. Satan’s hope, death and eternal separation from God was conquered when Jesus rose from the dead. Satan’s schemes were made futile when Jesus ascended and gave us The Holy Spirit.

David put his trust in God and thanked Him for his life and rescue even before it happened. Verses 12-13 read,

“I must perform my vows to you, O God;
    I will render thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.”

God did the same for us. We act out our vows to God. We vowed to make Jesus our Lord. God vowed to forgive us, make us righteous, and conform us to Jesus image. We actively and intentionally walk in that knowledge of God’s redemption of us, in our deliverance from death, sin, and Hell. Our part of the contract is that we make Jesus our Lord. God does all the rest. God keeps us walking, protects us from the enemy, destroys the enemy, and makes us new creations with His heart, His mind, His nature, and His Spirit.

What is it you have to fear? Nothing, because God your Father protects you. Zilch, because God, your Savior delivered you. Nada, because God, your Comfort indwells you. God loves you, He adores you. You can trust in Him and have nothing to fear.

Psalm 23 The Lord is My Shepherd. But What Does That Mean?

Psalm 23

Most of us are familiar with this lovely Psalm. Its peaceful imagery and encouraging words soothe the soul. It is a picture of our relationship with God, the Son as He guides and pastors us. It is a picture of our relationship with God, the Father as He disciplines and protects us. And it is a picture of our relationship with God, the Spirit as He comforts and leads us. Verses 1-3 read,

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3     He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.”

Sheep have no concerns. They trust completely in their shepherd, who wants them to be healthy, fed, and safe. Jesus does that for us. We can wholly have faith in and rely on Him. We have no needs that He will not meet. We do not lack anything in Him. He takes us to a place of rest with plentiful provision. We can rest because He is watching out for us. We can rest because we do not have to earn redemption, He paid for it and gives it to us freely.

In His care and rest we are made whole. Our weary souls are restored to perfection. He guides us to walk and be like He is, righteous and holy. He does all this good for us so that we can glorify him, represent His name, and let the lost know He can shepherd them as well.

Verse 4 reads,

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.”

We walk as innocent strangers in a world of evil. But God is with us, leading us through it. Enemies surround us. The devil like a prowling lion waits to attack. The lost hate us for Christ’s sake. But we have no fears because God is with us. He protects us. He is all we need.

The shepherd’s rod is what he uses to protect himself and his sheep. It is his weapon against predators and it is his discipline for wayward sheep as he teaches them to follow him instead of straying. He also uses his rod to keep track of and count the sheep so that he will not lost a single one to its wanderings or hungry predators and so that he can know there were no sheep from a different flock among his own. Further as the sheep pass under his rod for counting, the shepherd uses the rod to examine them and make certain they are healthy and have no hidden wounds he needs to tend to. Ezekiel 20:37 mentions the rod in this way,

“I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.”

The staff is the tool that clearly identifies the shepherd as a shepherd. The tool is used solely by shepherds for sheep, and only sheep.  While the rod conveys authority, protection and discipline, the staff speaks of patient kindness. The shepherd uses the staff to keep the flock together as a unit. He will use the crook to gently lift a lamb and bring it to its mother. He uses it to bring the sheep to himself as well. And thirdly he uses the staff to guide the sheep into a new path, through a gate or along treacherous and difficult roads. He does so by gently laying the staff along the side of the sheep thus softly guides the sheep in the proper direction.

God’s discipline, protection, and guidance is certainly a comfort. We have no anxieties or worries in His care. And He cares deeply. He does more than simply provide the bare essentials. He lavishes us with blessings and gifts. He doesn’t hand us a scrap of bread and a cup of water. He lays out a meal to share with us. He chooses us and makes us holy, royal, and His heirs. We are not beggars at the door. We are not even honored guests. We are His bride and the meal he provides is a feast announcing it to everyone. We are His and no one may hurt us or touch us while we share His name and His table. Verses 5-6 read,

“You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.”

We will not lose the goodness and richness of God. The blessings he bestows are ours eternally. His mercy is ours forever. We will go through the world and share His mercy, His righteousness, and His love with the lost and with the saved. We are eternally God’s own beloved.

In John chapter 10 Jesus described Himself as our Good Shepherd and He made some promises to us in that description. These promises echo Psalm 23. John 10:1-5 reads,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

John 10:8-14 says,

“All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,”

And John 10:27-30 read,

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

Take comfort, Believer. You are not on your own. You can depend entirely and utterly on God. He is your Good Shepherd.

Psalm 11 Who Do You Trust? Where Do you Put Your Faith?

5/31/2015

Psalm 11

Often the world will see the trouble we face and give us advice on how to fix it. People say put your trust in money, government or yourself. Sometimes they assume we ought to run in fear from the difficulties we face. David faced the temptation to listen to people who told him to run from Saul when Saul resented and mistrusted him.  Verses 1-3 describe David’s dilemma.

“In the Lord I take refuge;
how can you say to my soul,
    “Flee like a bird to your mountain,
2 for behold, the wicked bend the bow;
    they have fitted their arrow to the string
    to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
3 if the foundations are destroyed,
    what can the righteous do?”

David knew God was his sanctuary, his place of safety. He questioned how his friends could tell him otherwise. He knew Saul was a formidable enemy who was actively trying to kill him. David’s advisors didn’t understand that God was more awesome and fearsome than Saul could ever be. Not only were Saul’s men shooting arrows and throwing javelins at David, but the words of his advisors were trying to shake his faith, his foundation in The Lord. But David like us didn’t have to let those words pierce his heart. He had faith in God to protect him. Ephesians 6:16 reminds us,

“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;”

David’s faith was based on his assurance of God’s sovereignty exhibited repeatedly in his experience. Verses 4-5 read,

“The Lord is in his holy temple;
    the Lord's throne is in heaven;
    his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.
5 The Lord tests the righteous,
    but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.”

The Lord is exactly where He is supposed to be, on His throne. He sees everything that happens to His children. He loves us deeply. There are times when He allows the difficulties, when He permits our enemies and the enemy to throw flaming arrows. He tests our faith, not so that He will know how faithful we are but so we will know that our faith in God is true and good. There is no need to test the lost, they have no faith in Him to reveal.  Until they accept Jesus, they are tools of the enemy and God can and will use them to edify His children.

In the meantime the lost await a terrible end. They will be punished for letting the enemy use them and for hurting the children of God. Verse 6 reads,

“Let him rain coals on the wicked;
    fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.”

God is righteous. Sin must be paid for. But for us who have been made righteous by Jesus we will see Him face to face. We will be with Him forever. Verse 7 says,

“For the Lord is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
    the upright shall behold his face.”

Do you choose to believe those who say trust money? Do you trust those who encourage you to foster fear? Or do you exercise faith and trust in The Lord your God? God is our Refuge. He is our Strong Tower, our Foundation, our Rock, our Salvation, and our Strength. What do we have to fear? Romans 8:31-35 says,

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?”

Nothing and no one is more powerful than The Lord.

Colossians 2 You are Saved by Jesus Christ, not Self-discipline.

Colossians Chapter 2

Believer, you are saved. You are saved by Jesus Christ once and for all. Your salvation is a miracle. It is huge. You don’t have to fall prey to a list of rules, rituals, or regulations to maintain your religion. You don’t have to question your salvation because someone says that if you’re saved then you will do this or do that. You have a relationship with God. Your salvation shows itself and you can be confident in it, because you can be confident in Christ.

Are you part of a local body? Believer, you are part of the body and in order to experience the wholeness of that, you need to be part of a community of believers. Paul put it like this in verses 2-3,

“that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

When you are with other believers you are with people who reflect Christ, who are filled with the Spirit, who are seeking the same thing as you are, the Kingdom of God. You are knit together with them. You are interwoven with them inextricable from them. Being with others who share the same Spirit, the same goal, and the same Lord creates an environment where you are free to grow and mature in Christ and where you get to know God more intimately than you could ever get to know Him walking the path alone. And you are less likely to fall for wacky doctrine.

The Gospel is the gospel. It doesn’t change after you’re saved. Nothing gets added to it. Jesus Christ doesn’t change. You were saved by grace. You won’t lose your salvation due to hidden rules or rituals. Hebrews 13:8-9 say,

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.”

Stay rooted in the truth. Keep walking in truth. Get to know God more and more. Let your relationship with Him grow deeper, not broader. Pulling beliefs from religions, adding philosophies that sound good or make us more acceptable to the world make for a wide shallow relationship. Traditions, festivals, and ceremonies have nothing to do with grace, truth, or faith. Verses 6-8 read,

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

There are people out there who feel the need to force wacky doctrines on others. They’ll tell us that you must pay attention to this spirit or that spirit, that we must give up all material possessions, seek prosperity, punish ourselves, follow a set of strict rules, or live liberally without caring about how our actions affect others. We’ve seen people who drift from belief to belief, trying this one on, checking that one out, and trying to get to know God by following a worldly religion.

To know God, we only have to follow Christ. He is God. To know God we only have to realize we are have His Spirit inside us. He is God. He saved us by a miracle. He changed us wondrously. He didn’t just say, “You’re saved. Good luck with that, see ya in 60 years, hope you do well.” He made us a new creation. He transformed us and transforms us. He is with us. We were sinners, now we are blameless, forgiven, and righteous in His sight. We were dead, now we are alive. We are saved! Verses 9-15 read,

“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

It doesn’t say, we were dead, raised to life and now have to stay on life support, following rules in order to stay born again. It says we were raised to life by faith in the powerful working of God! It says all our sins are erased. It says our debt is paid and we have no legal demands on us. God saved us supernaturally, He circumcised our hearts. No physical ritual can trump that or do what God has already done. Why beat ourselves up for sins that God has expunged? Why give license or power to the devil, demonic powers and worldly spirits when we have already triumphed over them through Jesus Christ?

Jesus is our Lord. We follow Him. There is one command. 1 John 3:23-24 puts it this way,

“And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.”

Don’t give in to someone telling you that you must follow a set of rules or customs to be saved. Follow Christ. You have His Spirit. Your Brothers and Sisters have His Spirit. Follow Jesus. Verses 16-19 read,

“Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

People come to us and say, “You’re doing it wrong! Christians can’t drink that, eat that, or go there.” They follow customs and philosophies. They follow ideas that sound good but are not from Christ. The Pharisees added rules and traditions in an attempt to ensure they were keeping the law and they ended up worshipping the laws and traditions instead of the Lord. Verses 20-23 say,

20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.”

Following all those rules, might make us look more “Christian” but they won’t makes us more Christ-like. Severe self-discipline and forgoing all pleasure like asceticism seems right, but Jesus didn’t tell us to never enjoy life or to live in perpetual punishment. Where is the joy in that? There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. We are set free from the law of sin and death by the law of the Spirit. (Romans 8:1-2).

1 John 5:18-21 The Devil Can't Touch You, But That isn't the Case for the World.

1 John Chapter 5 Verses 18-21

Verse 18 reads

“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”

John says, everyone born of God does not keep on sinning. He said this right after warning us to pray for our brothers who we saw sinning. If a Christian is made aware of the sin they are doing they will stop and repent. It is in that ability to listen to the Spirit and desist sinning that the God protects His children from the devil. We are not under Satan’s power, like the world is. He can’t even touch us. The devil can’t be your excuse.

Take heart in the fact that if you are following Jesus, in fellowship with other believers (Verses 16-17) and listening to the Spirit the devil can’t touch you. It is in the practice of sinning that you invite him in. And John says is you keep sinning after you’ve been made aware of it, then you have not been born of God.

I pity the lost. They think they are free and they even think they are good. But they are deceived. They are bound to the ruler of this world because they won’t bow to the King of kings. They don’t even know. Verse 19 says,

“We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

But we do know! We have power. We are protected from the evil one. That means we can make a difference. We can go to them and be Jesus to them. We can reveal the truth to them and let them choose. But if no one gives them the truth, how will they ever get to choose? The path they are on is horrible and easy. It is leading to eternal damnation.

You and I have eternal life and it is free and wonderful and difficult. We have this awesome gift from our Holy Father. Jesus Christ paid the price because He is the only one who could. The Holy Spirit fills us, teaches and transforms us. Eternal life is awesome in every sense of the word.

Verse 20 reads,

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

We have understanding, we have the truth. The world doesn’t. Their ignorance doesn’t protect them it sends them to hell. You and I have this most amazing gift. We have this beautiful relationship with Almighty God. The world doesn’t have it, they have been duped into thinking they don’t want it.

We have the power to tell them the truth. Will we be attacked when we try and tell them? Absolutely, yes! But the evil one can’t touch us! He has no power over us at all. But he’ll fight tooth and nail to keep his children, whom he hates from becoming God’s children. Don’t fall into hating them or being bitter and defensive through the enemy’s attempts to hold onto them. Love them, be compassionate towards their plight. They are slaves and do not know it.

John ends his letter with verse 21

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

It seems strange, like a disjointed afterthought. But the Holy Spirit doesn’t do disconnected. This warning is important to keeping us away from a practice of sinning. Keeping God our priority is vital to walking in truth. When we go out into the world, idols are everywhere. It is so easy to become enamored of worldly things and let those things take God’s throne. The enemy can’t touch you, but he can and will try anything to get you to stop doing what Jesus did. He will try to get you to love the worldly things so that you don’t love people. He will try to make you as ineffective as possible. Idolatry is one of his favorite weapons.

Believer, you have God living inside you! You have eternal life! You have understanding. You have the truth. You are powerful and protected. You can make a difference.

1 John Chapter 5 Verses 13-15

These verses are a wonderful promise. Verses 13-15 reads,

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

Prayer is powerful. God wants us to ask for anything according to His will and know that He hears us, and that if He hears us, of course He will give it to us. I wonder if I took this promise more seriously how different my life might be. Would I see people healed in every manner right in front of me? Would I see people giving their lives to Christ everywhere? Yes, I believe if I more fully lived the life God has for me and if I were more confident about asking anything according to God’s will, my life would more closely resemble Jesus’.

This is not the only place we see this promise. Jesus told us the same thing repeatedly. One of those times is in John 14:12-14

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

Even when He was teaching us to pray He told us to ask for God’s will to be loosed on earth. Matthew 6:9-10 reads,

“Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven.”

What is God’s will? How is it in Heaven? It is God’s will that all people come to a relationship with Him, that everyone receives eternal life. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 says,

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

But there is more to His will than the beginning of the relationship. He wants us to have an abundant life that exemplifies Christ. The relationship with the Father, following Jesus, filled with the Spirit is lovelier and more amazing than people outside that relationship can know.

John 10:9-10 reads,

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Abundant life doesn’t mean Lamborghinis and Caviar. The life we have is the eternal life given to us by Jesus, lived now and always. We have life, while the lost have death. We know the way to life. Jesus is the door. Jesus is the way, and the truth, and the life. (John 14:6). It is a relationship following Jesus, doing what He did loving people like He loved. And just like He gave us His life, we are to do the same for others. We have life so abundantly it is eternal, never-ending, deep, and awesome.

What is God’s will as it is in Heaven? It begins with that perfect relationship. In Heaven, In God’s house there is a place for you, prepared by Jesus. He is there and He will take us to Himself. God is our home, our sanctuary, our tower, and our place. Jesus made the way and takes us to Himself. Jesus is not only the path, He is the destination. John 14:1-3 says,

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

Revelation 21:3-5 describes Heaven this way.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

The perfect relationship, including perfect peace and joy awaits us in Heaven and Jesus said we can have it now, here just for the asking. Heaven is not like earth. Satan is defeated. He has no power at all. Revelation 20:10 reads,

“and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

Death and Hades or Sheol, (another word for the grave) are defeated forever. As is unbelief. Revelation 20:14-15 reads,

“Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

That is God’s will. God’s will is for all of us to have that deep relationship with Him. He doesn’t want anyone to perish, but He says they will. He says that anyone who desires eternal life will have it but that the rest will not. Revelation 21:8 reminds us,

“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

God doesn’t want that for them, but they chose it for themselves. If we want what He wants then we will ask for anything according to His will and He will hear us and He will grant it. So take the challenge I am taking. Be bold. Be confident. Ask God for miracles. Ask God to reveal Himself in you to the dying masses. Ask God to heal, to feed, and to reveal truth. God will hear you and like any loving Father, He will give you the good things you ask for.

    Donna Campbell

    As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
