Revelation 14:14-20 The Harvest

Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. Matthew 3:8
Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. Matthew 3:8
Revelation 14:14-20
The harvest is the climax of the Revelation given to John. It is what every seal lead to and what every trumpet warned of. It is what the Gospel has proclaimed since God first gave the message to His prophets. Verses 14-16 read,
“Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand.15 And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, “Put in your sickle, and reap, for the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.” 16 So he who sat on the cloud swung his sickle across the earth, and the earth was reaped.”
What is the harvest? A harvest is a mature crop or fruit ready to be gathered. Jesus compares the people of the earth to the harvest in Matthew 9:35-38,
“And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
The people of the harvest must hear the Gospel and make a choice. They need those of us who have chosen Jesus Christ to be the laborers who will tell them the truth and give them the choice (Matthew 24:13-14). When everyone on the earth has had the chance to make that choice the crop will be ready for harvesting. Some people will be wheat, some will be chaff. In Matthew 3:10-12 John the Baptist prophesies about the harvest of Revelation.
“Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Chaff is the seed coverings and other debris separated from the seed in threshing grain, it is a word used to describe something worthless. Your life either produces valuable fruit in the image of Christ which leads people to Christ or its testimony is empty and worthless and will not bring anyone to Christ. The seed becomes more wheat with more seeds, the chaff blows away in the wind or is thrown into the fire. When the earth is harvested the wheat will have one destiny and the chaff another. Matthew 13:24-30 Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the weeds.
“He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”
Jesus sowed good seed, but the enemy sows weeds in an attempt to destroy the harvest. Jesus explains it in Matthew 13:36-43.
“Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”
The harvest begins with Jesus gathering the believers to Him. But before Jesus throws the weeds and chaff into the unquenchable fire, He harvests the grapes of his wrath. Verses 17-20 read,
“Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over the fire, and he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Put in your sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress, as high as a horse's bridle, for 1,600 stadia”
Jesus paid for our sin with His blood. We commemorate that and worship Him by drinking of the wine as a symbol of Jesus’ blood at the Lord’s Supper. But not everyone has chosen to let Jesus blood pay for their sin. Their blood must still be spilled for their sins. The grape harvest therefore is the procurement of their debt before they are thrown into the fire.
Jesus is taking back His city and He does not soil it with the blood of the lost. The blood is so great that it creates a river of blood and this is not little stream, it is a full on raging river of blood. It is about five feet tall and a little less than 185 miles long. That is a lot of blood. That is not just enough for blood for all the lost on earth, but for every person who ever lived without faith in Jesus. It is not only those living who will have to pay the price, it is everyone, ever.
You have either let Jesus pay the price for your sins, or you will pay the price. You are either good seed maturing into wheat, multiplying the crop or you are empty chaff, trash to be burned. You are either wheat ready to be gathered to the barn or weeds ready to be burned in the fire. Which are you? If you are wheat, are you bearing fruit in keeping with your repentance? Are you laboring for the harvest?

John 5:30-47 Is Jesus the Son of God? What Proof is There?

John Chapter 5 Verses 30-47

Is your hope in being good? Is your confidence in doing good? Do you call yourself Christian and have evidence upon evidence to back it up? You visit the sick and imprisoned. You care for orphans. You pray with people on the street. You carry food and blankets to give the homeless people you meet. You rarely miss church, serve on three church councils, and you’re the head of the children’s ministry.

Some of those things may indicate your religion, but they do not reveal Christ in you. Jesus was still teaching after the Jewish leaders had become upset about Him referring to God as His Father. He was teaching them about who He is as the Son of God. Verse 30 reads,

“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

First Jesus told them He was here doing the will of God. Everything He did, said, and was occurred because the Father wanted it. He then went on to offer them proof that He is the Son of God if only they would be willing to hear it, see it and believe it. He said His word wasn’t proof but there were other witnesses to his authenticity. First there was John the Baptist. Verses 32-35 read,

“There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.”

John told people the Messiah was coming and once Christ’s identity was shown to John, He told everyone that Jesus was the Savior. But Jesus didn’t only have the testimony of a man. He had more evidence to the veracity of His claims. Verse 36 reads,

“But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.”

Jesus very actions attested to who He is. Not just the miracles. There were plenty of men doing miracles. Although Jesus’ miracles were different. They were varied, they were without pomp, and they were based on His own authority. Other miracle workers had to pray and use spectacle and ceremony to bring about the one type of miracle they could perform. But Jesus spoke with power and it was so. The works he was doing was everything leading to His death and resurrection for our redemption. His resurrection was all the proof anyone could ever need to know that He is the Son of God.

The third witness to Jesus Christ is God the Father. Verses 37-38 read,

“And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.”

Jesus told them although they’d never heard His voice or seen Him that if they truly had faith in Him, if they actually sought His will and purpose they would recognize Him. But instead of seeking God and His will through a relationship they sought to follow the law. Verses 39-40 read,

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”

Jesus told them they had completely missed the mark concerning God and His will. They tried to please God by glorifying the law. Instead they left out Love and ignored that God is Love. Jesus came in the Father’s name. He fulfilled the scriptures. He accomplished God’s will, His amazing love and the people failed to see He was God because they had exalted the law so high that it had become their warped god.

Jesus received His glory from God. The Jewish leaders, the Pharisees, and the councils received their recognition from people. People lauded them for their piousness, their generosity, and their amazing abilities to uphold the law. But to seek God means not wanting acclaim from men, it means seeking God’s desire and will. It means pursuing Godly love. Verses 41-44 put it like this,

“I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”

Jesus continued and told them if they truly knew the scriptures, even the scriptures would tell them He is Christ, the Son of God. Moses wrote about Jesus and the people refused to believe his words manifested right before them. Verses 45-47 read,

“Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Think about this. People use the Bible to hate. They use the Scriptures to try and disprove Jesus today just as they did when Jesus taught this. It is not preaching laws, rules, or morality to people that will lead them to the Truth. Jesus is revealed in you by your testimony, life, and Holy Spirit.

Your life changed when you were saved. That declares Jesus to the world. But it can’t stand alone and uncorroborated by your life and actions. Does your life speak to the change in you? Are your deeds and the purpose of those deeds showing God’s love? Is the fruit of love borne out in your life? Is the Holy Spirit in you, leading you, changing you, and flowing out of you?

When people see you, meet you, and speak to you, do they encounter Jesus? Or perhaps do they encounter a person who does good? Is it you or God that gets the glory when you do good things? Is your hope in Jesus or in your good life?

John 3:22-30 Do You Wish You Got as Much Attention as the Other Guy?

John Chapter3 Verses 22-30

John the Baptist was baptizing people at Aenon in Judea and Jesus and His disciples were a little ways away from them and Jesus was also baptizing and teaching. A Jew had come to John’s disciples and they were discussing purification. (Baptism was originally a Jewish purification ritual.) Wherever this discussion went it made John’s disciples go to him and point out Jesus and the fact that more people were going to Him for baptism than to them.

It is a very common trait to compare ourselves to other people. That comparison rarely leads to anything good. Too often we aren’t evaluating with right motives. John’s disciples were feeling slighted and they wanted John to feel it as well. John’s disciples were upset about losing their glory and honor to someone else. But John set them straight.

First John pointed out that everything we have comes from God. Verse 27 reads,

“John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven”

This attitude is vital to keeping yourself from envy, jealousy, and judging. Everything you have, including your gifts and ministry are from God and for God. That leads you to praise, thank, and glorify God rather than yourself. It reminds you that believers have a common goal, we’re working to promote Jesus and share His love. We can be happy for each other and support one another.

John continues in verses 28-30

“You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

It is Jesus not ourselves that should be the focus of our ministry and lives. John compared it to a wedding party and probably didn’t realize the complete prophetic impact of his words as they pointed to Jesus’ return to bring His bride, the church to the wedding feast.

John explained to his followers that it is Jesus who he follows and the people are meant to follow Jesus and not him. He was merely the voice announcing Jesus and now that Jesus was there, his job was complete. It was a joyous and wonderful thing that Jesus was there and that Jesus’ ministry was gaining steam.

He told them “He must increase, but I must decrease.” He let them know this was how it was supposed to be. His ministry had to lessen because Jesus glory was the objective of the entire thing.” And in each of us, Jesus must increase and we decrease. As His Spirit grows in us we look more and more like Him, while our flesh, our sin nature, and our old desires decrease.

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, The Word and the Light. He is King of kings. We are supposed to be exalting Him. Our life on this earth is not about looking good or making people think highly of us. It is supposed to be about directing the world to see Jesus, leading them to know Him and glorifying Him.

Who is the focus of your life? Is it you or Jesus? When you see other people’s success do you know that all good things come from Heaven and therefore you can praise God for it? Do you join with your fellow Believers in glorifying Jesus or do you envy their accomplishments and worry that their achievements will take away from yours?

John 1:35-51 Jesus sees the real you and He adores you.

John Chapter 1 Verses 35-51

Jesus knows you. Jesus sees the real you. He see the person He created, the gifts, the talents, the personality and the potential. He knows you from your molecules to your mind. He knows everything about you. Encountering Jesus is life changing. He revolutionizes you and your future. What the world sees as a quirk, He sees as an asset. What the world sees as a flaw, Jesus uses to transform the world.

In John chapter 1 we read about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Verse 35 says, “The next day.” But from reading the other gospels, we know that at least 40 days had transpired between Jesus’ baptism and the following events. So either the encounter with John the Baptist was a different encounter than the baptism or “the next day” means on another day at a later time. I tend to think the latter is true. Cultures have different ways of expressing ideas including time. My Jamaican friend always says, “the other day” even when she is referring to months or years past. So to me this makes sense.

Verses 35-37 read,

“The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.”

These men had been waiting their entire lives for the Messiah, and they had been following John the Baptist and learning about the Messiah from Him. So when John pointed Jesus out to them, they recognized Him, believed, and followed. They were seeking the Christ, and they found Him. They no longer needed John’s tutelage, they were following the Lamb of God Himself.

The two disciples, Andrew and another went after Jesus. Jesus asked them what they were looking for. They answered by calling Him Rabbi and asking where He was staying. This was sort of like saying, “Teacher, we plan to go with you wherever you’re going, is there a floor for us to sleep on?” Jesus took them with Him and they stayed with Him the whole day.

Andrew went and found his brother Simon and brought Simon to meet Jesus. And immediately upon meeting Simon, Jesus changed him. We do not remember him as Simon, we know him as Peter. Andrew knew his brother was just as passionate to find the Christ as he was. He couldn’t let the chance go for Simon to know Jesus. And when Jesus met Simon, He said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). (Verse 42).

Simon was changed at that first moment. Jesus spoke prophetically to this man, although he couldn’t have known or understood at the time. He changed his name to Peter, which means rock. After Jesus’ ascension impetuous passionate Peter became the leader of the Christian movement. And Jesus let him know, He saw him for more than the world saw him. He saw Peter’s potential and future. He saw past his sin, and he saw what some considered flaws as the gifts they really were.

It was soon after that Jesus met Phillip and called him to follow. Phillip went and found Nathaniel and said, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Nathaniel was a very frank individual and he answered, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathaniel didn’t bother putting a filter on his thoughts, he was direct. Nazareth was a tiny poor place with a poor reputation. Other Jews considered the town immoral and conquered by the Romans. But Phillip encouraged Nathaniel to come and see for himself. Nathaniel may have been forthright and even blunt but he was not closed. He went and met Jesus. Verse 47 records Jesus reaction to Nathaniel.

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

Jesus saw what many people considered a flaw, Nathaniel’s candor and called it something good. Jesus saw Nathaniel for who he was created to be. He saw him through love. Nathaniel replied, “How do you know me?”

And so Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Before Phillip called Nathaniel, Jesus already saw him and chose him. Before whoever led you to Christ told you about Jesus, He already saw you and called you and knew you. He knew Nathaniel already. Now Nathaniel would have a chance to know Him.

Nathaniel was amazed that Jesus had known he’s been under a fig tree and said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

I picture Jesus laughing kindly and saying, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” Then Jesus speaks a truth deeper than they could recognize at that moment. He gave them a glimpse of the glorious future. Verse 51 reads,

“And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Jesus changed the lives of the men who followed Him. He saw them for who they were. He saw them for who they could be and would be. He is El Roi, the God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13). He sees you too. He knows you. He loves you. Those things you might not like about yourself, He loves. Those things the world thinks are imperfections, blemishes, and defects, Jesus sees as gifts, talents, and the tools you will use to serve Him.

Jesus knows you! Jesus loves you! He loves you, not in spite of who you are but because you are who you are.

John 1:29-34 John the Baptist concedes to Jesus, the Lamb of God

11/10/2014

This section begins the day after John the Baptist encountered the Levites.

Verse 29 reads,

“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Immediately upon seeing Jesus, John knew He was the Messiah, and he describes Him as the Lamb of God. He was the sacrifice that would once and for all end sacrifices. He was the completion of the law and the old covenant. John had been preparing people for the coming of Christ. He had them purify their bodies and repent of their sin so that when the Savior came, He could once and for all cleanse and forgive their sin. Jesus’ arrival was the completion of John’s ministry. Verses 30-31 read,

“This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”

John said, that Jesus came after him but ranks before him because he was before him. He was merely a prophet a servant of God, but Jesus was the Son of God. And John didn’t mean Jesus was older than him. In fact John was about 5-6 months older than Jesus. He meant Jesus had existed before him. Jesus had been the Savior since the beginning and now they were no longer waiting for Him. Jesus was God.

Remember John’s ministry popular enough with the people that it freaked out the Pharisees. He had devoted disciples, he had been teaching, and he had people who followed him and showed up to hear him teach. Those followers respected him. He had taught them about the Messiah and now he finally saw Jesus. He had to direct his followers away from him and preparation, and to Jesus and fulfillment. John told them the reason that he had baptized was so that Israel would recognize their Savior, the Lamb of God, the fulfillment of the Law. John exalted Jesus as Savior and Son of God as he decreased himself.

John hadn’t known who the Messiah would be. But when John saw Jesus, he recognized Him because God spoke to Him. He told all those with him how he had recognized that Jesus was Christ. Once again he directed attention to Jesus and away from himself. Verses 32-34 read,

“And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

John had the privilege of being God’s prophet. He was filled with the Holy Spirit from his time in the womb. God told him who Jesus was and then God confirmed it in this way that to me seems to be a beautiful illustration of transfer of ministry. We know from the other gospels that John had just baptized Jesus. Immediately after the baptism the Spirit came from Heaven like a dove and stayed on Jesus, just like God told John He would. John was filled with the Holy Spirit but Jesus was God and so He had no need to be filled with His own Spirit, He was His own Spirit. The Spirit manifested visibly and came down and remained on Jesus. John required God’s voice in order to be a voice. John required God and pointed to God. Jesus was God. He spoke with God’s voice. He loved with God’s love. His Spirit was The Holy Spirit. He pointed to Himself, to His Spirit and to His Father. John could only baptize with water, a merely symbolic act. But Jesus baptism was actual cleansing of sin, real forgiveness and an act of God, the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus came, John lessened himself, and his ministry. John now could tell everyone that Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah and the one He had been teaching about. He sent his followers to follow Jesus, as we will read tomorrow.

When Jesus came into your life, did your life change? Did you stop gratifying yourself and start doing God’s will? Do you consistently decrease your flesh as The Holy Spirit fills you and transforms you? Do you point to yourself, your goodness, and your hard work or do you reveal Jesus to the world?

John 1:19-34 John the Baptist, the voice who pointed to Christ

11/9/2014

John 1 19-34

John the Baptist was baptizing[1] a lot of people. He had followers and he taught people. He was making a splash. So much so that the Pharisees were becoming concerned about a possible new sect sprouting up. So they sent some representatives out to find out more about what he was doing.

Everything John did pointed to Jesus. His ministry was about the Messiah. And so when the priests came and asked him who he was, his answers directed them to the Messiah. They said, “Who are you?” He said, “I’m not the Christ.” But that didn’t answer their questions. So realizing that he wasn’t going to start teaching them about his ministry, they asked, “are you Elijah?” and then, “are you the prophet?” (The Jewish people were expecting Elijah and the Prophet to come before judgment day). John answered both, “No, I am not.”

John wasn’t the only guy out there talking about the soon to come Christ, but he was different. He wasn’t claiming to be a great prophet, although he was. (Later in this chapter we will see God speaking directly to John). He wasn’t trying to gain fame for himself, but for Christ. He wasn’t trying to get rich, in fact he lived kind of a hippie lifestyle, eating organically in the wilderness and wearing clothes no one was going to rush out to copy. So the Levites were kind of exasperated and they said, “C’mon who are you? We’ve gotta tell the big wigs something!” So John answered, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Verse 23).

John quoted Isaiah 40:3 to them. That should have answered them completely or at least piqued their curiosity, but the priests were not open to the truth of scripture, only their preconception about the scriptures and the prophecies. With this quote, John told them exactly who He was and once again pointed to the Messiah. But they were too stubborn to hear his answer and asked. “Then if you aren’t the Christ, and you’re not Elijah or the Prophet, why are you baptizing?”

John could have told them about himself, his ministry, his training and the good he was effecting but once again took the chance to tell them about the coming Christ. Instead of explaining who he was, his identity was related completely to Christ. His answer is recorded in verses 26-27.

“ John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

John was telling them that the Messiah was already living among them and He would soon begin His ministry. And the ministry of the Christ would be so much higher and better than his own. John baptized with water, but Christ would cleanse and purify differently. His ministry as so much higher that John couldn’t even untie his sandal. Even this sentence referred prophetically to Christ and should have caused the Levites to want to know more about Him. It alludes to Christ as our Bridegroom and John as the one unable to be a bridegroom[2]

Every opportunity John had, he gave attention to Christ rather than himself. His entire ministry was about shining a light on The Light. He had gained fame. He could have live the comfortable life of a rabbi. Pharisees were worried about his identity. The government had taken notice of him. He was shining the light of Christ into the darkness of people’s lives and they were either humble enough to repent and want to know more about the Savior or they got angry and afraid.

Is your ministry about Jesus or you? Does your life point people to God’s power and grace or your charm and strength? Is your identity in Christ or in your flesh? When people ask who you are do they hear who Jesus is?

[1] Baptism was not a new concept in Judaism, it was something the people did to purify their bodies and prepare themselves for a closer walk with God. It was different than the ritual washings to that cleansed the body for particular sins. It was not because it had been prescribed by the law but because they were choosing to for something special. It had its roots when God revealed Himself on Sinai, before He did so the Israelites had to wash themselves and their clothes by immersion. When proselytes were ready to commit to Judaism, they were baptized to bring them into the protection of God.

John 1:6-18 The Word became flesh

John Chapter 1 Verses 6-18

In the previous five verses, John spoke about Jesus being the Word of God, and the light. If you did not read yesterday’s study, I highly recommend you do to gain further insight to just what it means that Jesus is the Word and the Light. Briefly the Word refers to Jesus being the manifestation of God’s will, and the light refers to the fact that all life comes through Jesus and from Jesus. He is the source of life and breath.

Now John the Apostle talks about another John, John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin who came before Jesus to prepare the way for the Savior. He was very special. He was a prophet filled with the Holy Spirit, even though there had not been a prophet in hundreds of years. (Luke 1:13-17).  Although John was very special, He was not the Messiah the Jews had been waiting for. He pointed to Jesus. He pointed people to repent from their sins and to proclaim their repentance publicly through baptism. In Judaism baptism was a ritual signify consecration and preparation of a closer communion with God. And so John baptized people as they repented from sin and purified their bodies in preparation for Jesus who would purify their souls and baptize with the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 3:11).

John the Apostle said, John the Baptist was a witness to the light but not the light. John pointed people to Jesus. John prepared people for Jesus. (Verses 6-8). We can purify our bodies, we can live without sinning, but we cannot purify our souls. Water can remove dirt, but only blood can remove sins. (Hebrews 9:22). And only Jesus can take care of every sin once and for all. (Hebrews 9:26).

Verses 9-10 read,

“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.”

John wrote this gospel to show people who Jesus was, that He was the Son of God their Messiah. Many people had missed it, because they had preconceived notions of who the Savior would be. They had twisted and misinterpreted scriptures and they waited for an earthly king who would free them from government oppression. They didn’t recognize the King of kings who would free them sin and law. Jesus gives light, revelation and life to everyone, yet they didn’t know Him.

Verses 11-13 read,

“He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Jesus came to the Jewish, but for the most part they didn’t accept Him. Even though they had prophecy upon prophecy about Him. Even though John the Baptist had said, He was coming. They just didn’t believe. But for those who did, Jew and Gentile alike, He gave the right to become children of God. That is so awesome! What a great privilege! These children, the believers are not born from God through blood or by just wanting to be His children.

No amount of our own struggle can ever make us children of God. Nothing we do on our own can save us, or forgive a sin. Baptism didn’t forgive the sins of the people, it signified their repentant hearts. Their bodies were clean, their souls still required saving. We are not saved by our will but by God’s will. And if you recall from our previous study, Jesus is the Word, the personification of God’s will.

God’s will is that we are all saved and come to know Him. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 reads,

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

How did He make His desire possible? God’s desire was incarnated in Jesus, His Word.  Verse 15 reads,

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus not only became flesh, but He lived among us! He didn’t exist in some special sphere separate from humanity, He lived with us as one of us. He showed us who God is, through His life. His life, His light showed us God and reflected Him for us so we could know God. Not as a far off supreme being who rarely considers His creation but as our loving Father. What Jesus did for us is the epitome of love and grace, the embodiment of all God is, love given freely, grace given perfectly, and truth spoken and lived exactly.

Because Jesus became human and lived as one of us we are able to know God. It is no small thing, no common thing to know the Divine Holy Almighty Creator of the Universe. Yet this gift is given with no strings, no cost to us. That is grace so deep it is incomprehensible with The Holy Spirit to reveal it. Jesus is the complete revelation of God to us. He is not part God, He is all God. Jesus is completely wholly God. Verses 16-18 read,

“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.”

The law pointed out our sin. John the Baptist pointed out our need to repent and he pointed to Jesus. But Jesus didn’t just point to God, He revealed Him, He reflected Him and allowed us to see the invisible God. Jesus filled with grace and truth is the only way to know God. Read verse 18 again.

“No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.”

Did you catch that? “The only God, who is at the Father’s side” Who is at the Father’s side? According to Jesus Himself in Luke 22:69 Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. Once again we see Jesus is the Word of God, the word is with God and  by God’s side and the word is God.

As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
