Deuteronomy 19:1-13 Jesus is our Refuge

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Psalm 34:8
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Psalm 34:8
Deuteronomy 19:1-13
The Lord is our Refuge, Avenger, and Justice. In this chapter of Deuteronomy Moses reminded the Israelites about God’s provisions for refuge, vengeance, and justice. There are many sins which required Israelites to be put to death, but not all of them. One such sin was manslaughter, accidental killing without malice or intent. Verses 1-3 read,
“When the Lord your God cuts off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses, 2 you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. 3 You shall measure the distances and divide into three parts the area of the land that the Lord your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them.”

They were to make three cities a safe haven for the person who had committed manslaughter. If a person found himself in that situation, he could flee to one of those cities and be safe. But there was no pleading down from murder to manslaughter. There were specific rules which made killing manslaughter and not murder. Verses 4-5 describe what manslaughter is.
“This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past— 5 as when someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live,”

Even an accidental death could not be considered manslaughter if the slayer had hated his victim in the past. If he had hated him in the past then the death was murder. How often do we let our anger or bitterness simmer and come out in hurtful ways? I did that very thing recently. I was upset over a situation, letting my pride take over. Although I had no intention of hurting my friend, I let my emotions rule and said something that hurt her. Perhaps that is why Jesus told us to be in control of our anger, because it can so easily turn to hateful actions and put us at risk of the punishment for murder. In Matthew 5:21-22 Jesus said,
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

Allowing anger to stew into bitterness results in hurtful actions. Love on the other results in mercy, forgiveness, and joy. Paul told us to take every thought captive to obedience (2 Corinthians 10:5). He reminded us that the Holy Spirit is in us and that the manifestation of God’s presence in us is love demonstrated as joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Of course accidental or not, with or without malice, killing hurts people. Those left behind want vengeance. They cry out for justice, but most often what they really want is vengeance. God knows this. He understands our hearts, emotions, and intentions. He did after all create us. So The Lord gave people a haven from the threat of vigilantes. Verses 6-7 read,
“lest the avenger of blood in hot anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him fatally, though the man did not deserve to die, since he had not hated his neighbor in the past. 7 Therefore I command you, You shall set apart three cities.”
Emotion can and does affect us in ways that it should not. Anger becomes outrage and the hot headed will lash out and hurt someone thinking that it will somehow ease his pain. The cities of refuge gave the avenger an opportunity to cool down, to turn to God and understand that if he killed in anger, it would be him that was now a murderer.
Our first reaction does not have to be the one that rules us. Reacting in our hurt, will almost definitely result in sin. When we are hurt by someone, isn’t it usually our pride that let us be hurt? Whether we are the one who did the wounding or the one who was wounded turning to God is the key to being angry but not sinning. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. We are capable of holding our tongues, when Jesus holds our hearts.
And when we do need refuge Jesus is never far. He makes provision so that turning to Him is easy. Verses 8-10 read,
“And if the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land that he promised to give to your fathers— 9 provided you are careful to keep all this commandment, which I command you today, by loving the Lord your God and by walking ever in his ways—then you shall add three other cities to these three, 10 lest innocent blood be shed in your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, and so the guilt of bloodshed be upon you.”

There had to be enough cities of refuge so that there was one within fleeing distance. Refuge had to be close by. Jesus is always close to us. He is near to the broken hearted. Psalm 34:17-18 says,
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
    and saves the crushed in spirit.

Broken heartedness is not all about feeling sad, it is more about a contrite or remorseful heart. When pride is gone, repentance and submission may take its place. Pride puts me on the throne, a crushed spirit puts The Lord on the throne. Pride leads to vengeance; but a broken heart knows that our God is Just and vengeance is His. All sin is paid for, either by the perpetrator or Jesus.
Sometimes pride will keep us from recognizing our own sin. Recently, I was talking to a friend who said something incredibly hurtful to me. I was very angry and walked away. I remained angry with him but said nothing. I waited for him to apologize. He never did. But after some time, I realized I had just as much to apologize for as he did. I had sinned too. We made up within a couple of hours. But for those hours, my pride wouldn’t allow me to see my sin, only his. Sin is sin whether we think it is intentional or not. If we hate someone, are bitter towards them, or hold onto the wounds they’ve inflicted, we will eventually let those feelings out. Passive-aggressive words hurt just as much as straightforward words. We cannot hide behind our pride and pretend to be innocent. Verses 11-13 read,
“But if anyone hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and attacks him and strikes him fatally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities, 12 then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood, so that he may die. 13 Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, so that it may be well with you.”

You can’t take refuge in Christ, if you have guilt on your hands. Taking refuge in Him requires your sins to be paid for. In Ancient Israel that meant letting the avenger take the life of the killer. Today it means professing Jesus as Christ and Lord of your life. When you do that with a truly penitent heart, your guilt is gone, your sins are forgiven, and you are righteous. Christ is your refuge and no one can take your life to pay for those sins, because they are atoned.
Have your sins been forgiven? If not, you can ask Jesus to forgive them right now. You can ask Him to be The Lord of your life and make you a citizen of His city of refuge. Death will no longer threaten you, because you have eternal life.
Have you let pride take over your heart? Have you refused to recognize your own sins and declare yourself innocent? If you are trying to pretend you are innocent and still take refuge in Jesus, you will find yourself turned over to the one who will avenge the blood of the innocent and you will die.

Psalm 61 Jesus is Our Rock and Salvation

Psalm 61

David wrote so many beautiful Psalms, songs, and poems to the Lord and many of them were prophetic. He was a prophet. (Acts 2:29-31).  David is a “type of Christ” that is, he was a prophetic symbol, a foreshadowing of Christ. He was not Christ. He was not a Christ or God. Much of what he did prefigured Jesus, His ministry, and His life. So it is natural that so much of his writing would be messianic prophecy. That is what I read in this Psalm titled, Lead Me to the Rock. Verses 1-3 read,

“Hear my cry, O God,
    listen to my prayer;
2 from the end of the earth I call to you
    when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
    that is higher than I,
3 for you have been my refuge,
    a strong tower against the enemy.”

The Lord saves us when we cry out to Him. He waits for us to recognize our need of Him. And when we call on Him, He meets that need. Joel 2:30-32 speaking of The Day of the Lord puts it like this,

“And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.”

Does that mean we only have to cry out and that’s it we’re saved? No. it means we cry out because we recognize our need and we believe Jesus is the Christ, God our Savior sent by God to deliver us. We believe He is who He says He is and that He died and rose from the dead for us. In Romans 10:9-13 Paul writes it this way,

“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Believer, when we pray God hears us. (1 John 5:13-15). He is our Rock. He is higher than we are. We can’t depend on ourselves for security or refuge. We can’t save ourselves. Only Jesus can save us from the enemy. Only He is qualified to be our Savior. Acts 4:12-13 says,

“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

David was a great king. He had all the money any man could ever want. He had power ad authority given to him by God. He had amazing talents and wonderful gifts. He was a man after God’s own heart. (1 Samuel 13:14). But He still needed the Lord to save Him. His faith in God, his dependence on God, and his friendship with God aligned his heart with God’s will. He cried out to God for salvation and God saved him. God gave David eternal life. Verses 4-5 read,

“Let me dwell in your tent forever!
    Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah
5 For you, O God, have heard my vows;
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.”

David longed to be in the tent of the tabernacle worshipping God. David loved to worship the Lord. That is evident in his life and in his Psalms. The tent was the Tabernacle, God’s holy and anointed place, where His presence dwelled in the Old Covenant. But in the new covenant God’s doesn’t indwell a tent or a building, He indwells His children. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 says,

“Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.”

We take refuge in Him, He shelters us with His wings. The Ark of the Covenant was in the Tabernacle. The Ark though made by men by order of God was the physical representation of The Lord, God. On the lid or mercy seat were two cherubim whose wings were stretched out toward one another. (Exodus 25:10-22). It is under those wings, the wings of the mercy of God that David took his refuge. Hebrews 9:1-10 describes the Ark and its purpose. Today, no one knows where the Ark of the Covenant is. We do not need that holy relic because we have Jesus, God With Us. He is our mercy seat in the New Covenant. There is a reason no one knows where the Ark is. I believe that God either destroyed it or took it up to Heaven because Jesus is our mercy seat now. Hebrews 9:11-14 reads,

“But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

God gave us a heritage, an inheritance in Jesus. When we are saved, God adopts us as His children and makes us heirs with Jesus. (Ephesians 1:3-14). He gives us a legacy. As we glorify Christ, the world comes to know Him through us, and people who receive the gift of eternal life because of our lives, testimony and witness are our legacy. We didn’t save them, but we were part of God’s great work to bring them to Himself. His name lasts forever. Jesus is eternally our King. Our lives are eternally His. Verses 6-8 read,

“Prolong the life of the king;
    may his years endure to all generations!
7 May he be enthroned forever before God;
    appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

8 So will I ever sing praises to your name,
    as I perform my vows day after day.”

It is because of the lessons we learned from Moses’ life David’s life, and all the other great men and women of faith that we believe today. It is because of the person who shared the gospel with us, the person who lived a life of worship, and the person who disciples us that we believe. It is because The Father called us, Jesus died and lived for us, and The Spirit opened our eyes that we believe.

Jesus’ name and glory lasts forever. He gave us eternal life as well as holy and royal heirs with Him. Jesus sits on the throne of God forever as our Sovereign Holy King. Guess what! We get to sit there with Him! His kingship is shared with us. Revelation 3:20-22 says,

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Don’t stop praising God. Don’t only praise Him in private but in public for everyone to see His awesome power, love and salvation. You Believer, are the holy temple of the Lord. You are standing on the Rock of Jesus. You are heirs with Him. You are royalty. Jesus is the Rock. He is God With Us. He is the eternal King of kings. He is I Am.

Psalm 59 Let God be your Deliverer

Psalm 59

This miktam of David was written while King Saul was trying to kill David. He had sent men to watch David’s house so that he could have him murdered in his bed. (1 Samuel 19). Saul was God’s anointed king. But David had been chosen to succeed him. Saul grew ever more paranoid and angry. He didn’t care that David was married to his daughter or that his best friend was his son. His paranoia made him hate David. His anger turned to blind rage and he was desperate to kill David.

In verses 1-2 David calls on the Lord to deliver him and protect him from his enemies.

“Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
    protect me from those who rise up against me;
2 deliver me from those who work evil,
    and save me from bloodthirsty men.”

David didn’t turn to his own strength, wits, or money. He turned to the Lord God his Maker and his Justice, Elohim. The enemy wants to destroy us as well. The devil doesn’t want us coming into our royal identities. He doesn’t want to be effective. He hates us because we are heirs to the Kingdom of God. He thinks that it ought to be him. (Isaiah 14:13-15). Verses 3-7 describe Saul’s men and their wicked behavior following a paranoid and hateful leader. It can also describe the behavior of the followers of the prince of the power of the air, Satan toward believers.

3 For behold, they lie in wait for my life;
    fierce men stir up strife against me.
For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,
4     for no fault of mine, they run and make ready.
Awake, come to meet me, and see!
5     You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel.
Rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

6 Each evening they come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths
    with swords in their lips--
    for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?”

People will hate us for following Jesus, like the Saul hated David for being chosen by God. They can hate us for Jesus’ sake, but they shouldn’t hate us for our actions. Our actions, our words, and our lives should be a testimony to God, lived in love and beneficence. In John 15:18-19 Jesus said,

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”

But that doesn’t give us a right to hate them, to be hateful to them, or to be evil in return. In Matthew 5:43-45 Jesus said,

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

The world is lost and their inheritance is eternal death, they crave to lift themselves up, to live in the moment and make themselves happy, rich, and satisfied. But we are eternal creatures and the present, the world, and all its offerings can’t satisfy. (James 4:1-9). Only the Lord God, our Savior, our Peace, and our Provider can truly satisfy. Psalm 107:8-9 says,

“Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul,
    and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”

But David trusted the Lord. He didn’t have to figure it out himself, defend himself, or take vengeance himself. He knew God is Just. He knew God was his Shield and his enemies couldn’t break through God’s defense. Verses 8-10 read,

“But you, O Lord, laugh at them;
    you hold all the nations in derision.
9 O my Strength, I will watch for you,
    for you, O God, are my fortress.
10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me;
    God will let me look in triumph on my enemies.

11 Kill them not, lest my people forget;
    make them totter by your power and bring them down,
    O Lord, our shield!
12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips,
    let them be trapped in their pride.
For the cursing and lies that they utter,
13     consume them in wrath;
    consume them till they are no more,
that they may know that God rules over Jacob
    to the ends of the earth. Selah

14 Each evening they come back,
    howling like dogs
    and prowling about the city.
15 They wander about for food
    and growl if they do not get their fill.”

In this miktam David has refers to God as:

·         Elohim- Creator and Judge, the Lord of justice.

·         Yahweh- this is God’s own unpronounceable holiest name.

·         Lord God of Hosts- the powerful chief over the angel armies coming swiftly on hos noble steed to conquer the enemy for eternity.

·         God of Israel- Sovereign over His chosen people

·         My Strength

·         My Fortress

·         God in His Steadfast Love

·         Our Shield

·         Refuge

These names are all true of God. They describe His character. How can we be afraid when The LORD God loves us so much. How can we not choose to let Him take care of us when He is who He is?

The lost don’t know God. Verse 7 says they ask “Who” will hear them. They do not know who God is. But we can show them who He is by trusting Him and glorifying Him. By letting God be God and bringing them to a place where they will see their choice and make it.

In verse 11 David asked the Lord not to kill his enemies. He didn’t want them to die. He wanted them to fall and face their evil. It is in the face of our sins that we realize we need the Lord. And that is what David wanted for his enemies. That is what God wants for our enemies. He doesn’t want people to suffer an eternity separated from Him. (2 Peter 3:9). He longs for people to know Him and allow Him to lavish His perfect constant and never-ending love on them.

Rather than spend our time scheming against and wishing bad for our enemies, we can spend our time loving them and praising God. Instead of showing them how powerful and great we are, we can demonstrate God’s strength through our weakness as we depend on Him. Verses 16-17 read,

“But I will sing of your strength;
    I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress
    and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
    for you, O God, are my fortress,
    the God who shows me steadfast love.”

So Believer, I encourage you to praise God everywhere, always, and through everything. Your praise and worship takes power away from the enemy and allows his followers to see the love and power of God Almighty, their Creator and Judge. Jesus’ righteousness lived out in your life makes their sin apparent to them so they can call on the name of the Lord.

Psalm 46 Relax and Remember Who God is. He is God.

7/6/2015

Psalm 46

No matter what is happening around you, no matter the chaos, the fight, or the struggle God is God. He is Almighty. In Him we have peace. He is God, our Peace and our Sovereign.  He doesn’t change. There is nothing that happens on this earth that He is not aware of. There is nothing that can happen that can surprise Him and nothing that He can’t handle. Imagine the worst thing that could happen. It isn’t too much for God. We can always turn to Him for help. He wants us to always turn to Him. We can always depend on Him. Verses 1-3 read,

“God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah”

God doesn’t have to reschedule for you. You don’t have to call and hope He’ll come by and help when He gets a chance. His help is more than lip service and broken promises. When you need Him, He is there, already with you. He is a very present help in trouble. He’s not thinking about what He’s got to do later, while He says He’s with you. He is wholly with you. He has your best interest in mind. It doesn’t matter if the world is falling down around you. God made the world and He’s got you. If the ground falls out from beneath you, it’s okay. He is your foundation and He’s got you and your best interest in mind.

God is not a luxury, He is a need, a necessity. The body can’t live without water, food, and oxygen. The soul can’t live without God. A river flows through land and makes the land fertile for plants, it brings water for drinking and fish for eating.  Verses 4-7 say,

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah”

God is our Life-giving River. He flows through the Kingdom of Heaven, He flows through New Jerusalem. But guess what else? He flows through His people. We are His holy habitation, His dwelling place. We are the city of God, a city on a hill glorifying God. He makes us glad. We don’t have to question where He is, because He is with us, He is in us. Like a river, He flows out from us to give life to all those around.

Through all the mayhem of life the river flows, unchanged by the wars and tumult of the land. Yet the land would die without the river. The city wouldn’t survive without the river. Jerusalem wasn’t built on a river. Hezekiah actually built an underground water system for the city that allowed the city to thrive. No, the river in the City of God is God, our Salvation, our Living Water, our Holy Spirit. John 7:37-39 Jesus describes Himself and the Holy Spirit this way,

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

Not only can we depend on God for real help and not only does He dwell in us, give us life and flow from us, but He is our refuge. We can go to Him and be wrapped safe within Him. He is with us. He is in us. We are in Him. How can we ever worry about anything? This is God Almighty. This is The Creator of the whole universe and everything in it. He is our Sustainer. He is God! Lord of Hosts, the entire army of angels is ready to do His bidding. What could we possibly have to fret about? Consider all He has done. Verses 8-9 remind us of some of His acts.

“Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.”

Bows, guns, spears, and cannons might frighten us, but they are nothing to the Lord. No weapon could hurt Him and we are in Him so we don’t have to worry about all those weapons either. Sure they can hurt us physically, they can even kill us, but they can’t defeat us, they can’t take God away from us, and they can’t take our eternal life from us. God is bigger than all that, He is Sovereign Almighty God. Isaiah 54:16-17 reminds us,

“Behold, I have created the smith
    who blows the fire of coals
    and produces a weapon for its purpose.
I have also created the ravager to destroy;
17     no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,
    and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
    and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

Regardless of the cacophony around you, remember who God is, remember what He has done, what He can do, and what He has promised. You don’t have to worry or agonize over the confusion or the wars. Verses 10-11 read,

“Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Be still. God says, “Be still.” He doesn’t say “run here and there and fix your problems.” He doesn’t say “worry”, “protest”, or “freak out” He doesn’t say, “figure it out for yourself” or “cross your fingers and hope I’ll be able.” No, He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

He wants to let you be still and know He is God. When you trust it to Him, He is exalted. He is glorified. All those people watching, will see who God is and what He can do. Then they too can know He is God.

Psalm 27 God is Our Refuge. The Enemy has Lost the War.

Psalm 27
Paul asked this question, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). And David had similar sentiments in this Psalm. Verse 1 reads,

“The Lord is my light and my salvation;
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom shall I be afraid?”

David referred to The Lord as his light. He didn’t mean a lamp or a candle, or even a candelabra. He meant light like the dawning of the sun. Daylight so bright that no darkness can exist while it shines. The Lord is our light and our salvation. He delivers us from evil. He rescues from the enemy. And He gives us freedom. The Lord is our stronghold, our place of defense, our refuge. He not only defends us, he keeps our life safe from the enemy.

The enemy may be able to hurt and maim, but he can’t take Jesus away from us, He can’t take away our salvation. Whom shall we fear? If God is for us, who can be against us? The enemy will always try to hurt those with faith in the Lord. But with faith in God, we have nothing to fear from anything. Verses 2-3 read,

“When evildoers assail me
    to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
    it is they who stumble and fall.

3 Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
    yet I will be confident.”

The enemy can and will make war on us. He will try to shake our faith by hurling lies at us, by causing chaos, trouble, and suffering. He may cause us grief, but He cannot take us out of God’s hands. The more we know our God, the more faith we have in Him. We can let Him be our light, salvation, and stronghold of our life. Remember Jesus died on the cross and He rose again. At that moment the devil was defeated. But he keeps trying. He wants us to be paralyzed from the injuries he inflicts. He wants us to be ineffective and not stand with the army of the Kingdom of God.

Whatever wounds he perpetrates, cannot cripple us if we have faith. We are to wear the armor of God not to look good but to be defended and to fight the enemy. God Himself is every piece of that armor. He is our Refuge, our Shield, our sword, and our Defense. If you are unfamiliar with the armor of God I recommend you go to Ephesians chapter 6 and read it. Paul describes the armor in verses 10-18.

Why is it we can be confident even in the face of the enemy’s war against us? Because the war has already been won. We are victors with Jesus. Revelation 12:10-12 describes our victory this way,

“And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

We still fight the battles, but not for ourselves, we’re already free. We fight to free the prisoners of war who are bound in Satan’s chains and who are ignorant of their situation. We still fight the enemy, but we do so with great confidence because we know the outcome.

And that outcome makes us sing for joy, sing out the testimony of the greatness of The Lord. David loved to spend time worshipping and praising the Lord in His temple. It brought him peace and joy to spend time with The Lord. He delighted in the Word and He relished getting to know God more and more. It was that time with God, whether in good times or bad that built his faith. Verses 4-6 read,

“One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
    and to inquire in his temple.

5 For he will hide me in his shelter
    in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
    he will lift me high upon a rock.

6 And now my head shall be lifted up
    above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
    sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.”

The Lord does this for us too, we are hidden in Him and He abides in us. The concept is far beyond my capacity to understand but I trust in it. We are in God and God is in us. I get a picture of paints of different colors swirled around one another so that the yellow is in the purple swirls and the purple is in the yellow swirls.

 God never abandons us. He is so united with us that we cannot be separated from Him. When troubles come, when good times come, when we forget our faith and let fear overwhelm us, we call on The Lord and He answers, always. He knows us. Verses 7-12 read,

“Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
    be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you,
    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”
9     Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
    O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
    O God of my salvation!
10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
    but the Lord will take me in.

11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
    and lead me on a level path
    because of my enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
    for false witnesses have risen against me,
    and they breathe out violence.”

Remember when the enemy tries to wound you, you are in the refuge of God. And He is in you. He surrounds you with His armor and the enemy cannot touch you. God’s path is level and straight. The enemy can and will make threats against you, but you don’t have to believe his lies, you know who God is, you know who you are in Christ, and you know the enemy is defeated. You know the hope of eternal life. Verses 13-14 read,

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord!”

Let your hope give you courage and strength. One day we will be in eternity with God and see Him in person, right now by faith we know Him a little, but then we will know Him wholly as we look directly at Him. Paul describes it this way in 1 Corinthians 13:12,

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”

Believer, let that give you courage and strength to face the world, battle the enemy, and glorify The Lord God Almighty.

Psalm 20 The Blessing of Trusting in The Lord God Almighty

Psalm 20

What an amazing joyful blessing this Psalm is! Believer, do you know what a blessing it is to be saved? Do you understand how privileged you are to be a child of the King? It is a magnificent honor and it is not one we are supposed to keep for ourselves. We are supposed to want it for others. We are supposed to be so much like our Lord that our love draws them to Him, that His love exemplified in our lives brings others to Him. We trust the Lord because we know Him. What can we expect from God? Verses 1-3 read,

“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
    May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
    and give you support from Zion!”

We know God answers us, always. We stay in constant communication with Him and when we face trouble, strife, and difficulties we can call on Him. He protects us. He saves us. He gives us peace. Calling on Jesus’ glorious name is the first act of repentance and salvation. In Romans 10:11-13 Paul put it this way when He quoted Joel 2:32

“For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Once saved, we simply do not stop calling on His name. We depend on Him entirely. We entered into a relationship, a peace with God that day. He gave us refuge in Him. But we continue calling on Him. When we deal with various situations we ask Him to lead us through. We gain His wisdom, peace, kindness, gentleness, patience, faith, and love as we continue to call on Him. And we know, when we ask that He saves. And our response to Him in love, not obligation is worship and praise. It is a continual repentance, not in shame but humility as we give up our sinful flesh and allow the Spirit to change us to be like Him. Verse 3 reads,

“May he remember all your offerings
    and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices!”

God regards sacrifice, worship, and praise with favor when they are performed from a right attitude. When He rejected Cain’s sacrifice it was not because it wasn’t as good as Abel’s. It wasn’t because it was grains and not meat. It was because Cain offered it to make himself look good. It came from pride, envy, and bitterness. Abel’s sacrifice was done in adoration of God. God knows the sincerity or the disingenuousness of our adulation. He knows what and who delights us. Verses 4-5 read,

“May he grant you your heart's desire
    and fulfill all your plans!
5 May we shout for joy over your salvation,
    and in the name of our God set up our banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!”

Is our joy and pleasure in the Lord and His awesome gift of Salvation? Is our heart merged with His? People love to quote Psalm 37:4, let’s read it in context. Psalm 37:3-6 reads,

“Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.”

God will fulfill our joy and make us righteous. He will make our virtue evident to the world as He conforms us to His image. He will, like the loving Father He is grant us all good things and goodness. Do we really think that the contrite heart of Jesus desires a mansion with 12 bathrooms or124 pairs of designer shoes? No, the heart of God desires our hearts and the hearts of every person. Remember God doesn’t want a single soul to be lost. (2 Peter 3:9). How then can we be okay with that?

It doesn’t matter how bad the situation, God can save us from it or carry us through it. He is Salvation. No matter what the need, God can fulfill it. His grace is enough. His love is abundant. His faithfulness is constant. We do not have to run around trying to fix our problems on our own. We trust in the Lord God Almighty. We don’t put our faith in money or our hope in armies. We put our confidence in God, our All in All. Verses 6-9 read,

“Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
    he will answer him from his holy heaven
    with the saving might of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They collapse and fall,
    but we rise and stand upright.

9 O Lord, save the king!
    May he answer us when we call.”

Remember, trust in God. When troubles come, call on Him. When you want more goodness in your life, call on Him. When you have needs, call on Him. When you want to be more like Him, call on Him. When you want or need anything at all, call on Him. He is enough. He is our Refuge. He is our Salvation. He is our Redeemer. He is our Provider. He is our Peace. He is our Father. He is I Am.

Psalm 18 What Does Salvation Mean? What Does Salvation Involve?

Psalm 18

David wrote this psalm to commemorate the day The Lord saved him from Saul. Saul who had once loved David had become paranoid to the point of such fear, hate, and resentment that he actively sought to destroy him. Saul and his army had become an enemy so strong that David was not sure he would survive, except for the promise of God that he would be king and His supernatural protection and deliverance of him.

Taking the time to acknowledge and praise God for the great and good things He does for you is important and often through those prayers, praises, and songs The Lord will give you a prophetic word, a promise, or an encouragement. He spoke prophetically through David’s praise to encourage and lead us today.

Verses 1-3 are the kind of eloquent and pure praise I wish would flow from my mouth to my Lord’s heart.

“I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.”

Look at those depictions and understand each one was true for David and is true for us. God is our foundation, the place we go to fight and remain safe from the enemy, He is our deliverer, our protection, our strong and saving King, and a protection that can’t be trespassed by the enemy. No matter what the enemy does to us or how he tries to hurt us, God will not allow him to destroy us. We will not be devastated, not because we are so strong and good and faithful, but because God is Mighty, Righteous, and Steadfast. We can’t fight the enemy on our own, but God has already defeated him. Just as Saul pursued David in order to keep him from being the king who God had anointed him to be, the enemy wants to keep us from inheriting the Kingdom.  Verses 4-6 describe David’s predicament when Saul tried to kill him.

“The cords of death encompassed me;
    the torrents of destruction assailed me;
5 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.”

But The LORD loved David and wouldn’t let it happen. He doesn’t like it when anyone tries to harm His children. He avenged David and He will also avenge us. The enemy will not escape retribution. David described God’s judgement on Saul as he prophetically describes God’s justice for us on The Day of Reckoning. Verses 7-9 paint the picture.

“Then the earth reeled and rocked;
    the foundations also of the mountains trembled
    and quaked, because he was angry.
8 Smoke went up from his nostrils,
    and devouring fire from his mouth;
    glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9 He bowed the heavens and came down;
    thick darkness was under his feet.”

Verses 10-12 describe Jesus Christ leading the Heaven’s army.

“He rode on a cherub and flew;
    he came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him,
    thick clouds dark with water.
12 Out of the brightness before him
    hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.”

God loves us so intensely that He will not curb His anger that day. Verses 13-15 read,

“The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
    and the Most High uttered his voice,
    hailstones and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
    he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15 Then the channels of the sea were seen,
    and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
    at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.”

In His wrath, we are not forgotten. He is our stronghold and He will gather us to Him. Verses 16-18 say,

“He sent from on high, he took me;
    he drew me out of many waters.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemy
    and from those who hated me,
    for they were too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a broad place;
    he rescued me, because he delighted in me.”

On that Day, payment will come due. God will look at us and He won’t see our sin, our shortcomings, nor our mistakes, He will see Jesus’ righteousness as our righteousness. He will see our love, faith, kindness, and patience. Can you imagine? I know I too often see all the worst of myself, but God doesn’t. He sees all the goodness of Jesus. He sees His cherished, valued, esteemed precious child. His love is so extravagant that He not only sees the best of us, He makes us to be the best.

Each person will be judged by the standard he followed, either by the law or by Jesus blood.

Verses 24-28 read,

“So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
    with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26 with the purified you show yourself pure;
    and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27 For you save a humble people,
    but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28 For it is you who light my lamp;”

David knew he couldn’t be righteous on his own. He knew he couldn’t fight his enemy on his own. He depended on God for his salvation. So do we. It is our Lord who saves. It is our Lord who makes us righteous. It is our Lord who enables us to do good. It is our Lord who empowers us against the enemy. It is our Lord who makes us like Him. Verses 31-36 read,

“For who is God, but the Lord?
    And who is a rock, except our God?--
32 the God who equipped me with strength
    and made my way blameless.
33 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
    and set me secure on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for war,
    so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
    and your right hand supported me,
    and your gentleness made me great.
36 You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip.”

Look at all the awesome things God enables us to do. He endows us with strength. He gives us authority to defeat the enemy with Him. (Verses 37-45). And God makes us kings with Him. He crowns us with His glory, life, righteousness, untouchable salvation, and rejoicing. Verses 46-48 read,

“The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
    and exalted be the God of my salvation--
47 the God who gave me vengeance
    and subdued peoples under me,
48 who delivered me from my enemies;
    yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me;
    you rescued me from the man of violence.”

So praise the Lord for all He does for you. Exalt Him and he will lift you up too. As you consider all the awesomeness of God with you, He encourages, edifies, and extends you. If you think God hasn’t done anything for you, just think of all your salvation encompasses. The miracle of salvation is massive. Praise Him for that amazing gift and let the lost know how wonderful He is. Verses 49-50 read,

“For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
    and sing to your name.
50 Great salvation he brings to his king,
    and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
    to David and his offspring forever.”

Psalm 7 The LORD is my Refuge

5/28/2015

I am still out of town and have chosen another encore Bible devotional:

David wrote Psalm 7 in response to an accusation of wrongdoing. The title of the Psalm suggests it was a pretty hefty allegation, possibly treason against Saul. Regardless of what the charge was, David knew he was innocent.

David describes his pain as if a lion had torn his soul apart. (Verse 2). But in his distress David turned to the LORD. He knew God was his refuge. Refuge is a word we tend to use often. We can forget its meaning, we can lessen its strength. A refuge is a place of safety and protection. If an animal lives on a refuge, it cannot be hunted. If we abide in The LORD, we cannot be touched or hurt be the enemy. David knew that.

David also knew that God would take care of the problem and his enemy. David didn’t have to defend himself. He knew he was innocent and he knew God knew the truth. He invited the LORD to test and judge him.

Verses 8-11 read,

“The Lord judges the peoples;
    judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
    and according to the integrity that is in me.
9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
    and may you establish the righteous--
you who test the minds and hearts,
    O righteous God!
10 My shield is with God,
    who saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a righteous judge,
    and a God who feels indignation every day.”

Do you trust God like that? Do you understand that if you are blameless then you don’t have to fear judgment? You don’t have to shout your innocence from the mountaintops. You don’t have to protest for everyone to hear. You simply trust God to be who He says He is. God judges justly. God protects the righteous. Even when it seems like the wicked are winning, you can know they will be judged.

If Jesus is your Lord, then God sees you as righteous. Jesus was your propitiation. God’s great grace means you can trust God to be your refuge, your haven, your sanctuary. Whatever problems you face, God is big enough to handle them.

God is mighty. You can trust Him to take care of it for you. God is your shield, He saves the upright heart. He saved you! You don’t have to be concerned about how everything will turn out. You win.

If you leave it to God, maybe that person who did you so wrong will also find out that God loves them. Maybe they will turn to Jesus. If not, then they will dig their own traps, they will eventually pay for the sins they committed. But God longs for them to turn to Him. Your actions can affect that.

So go ahead, give it to God, whatever your problem is, be it evil being done to you, be it any worries you have. Verse 17 reads,

“I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
    and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.”
