For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 14:2
For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 14:2
Psalm 87
This Psalm written by the Sons of Korah is short but meaningful. Verses 1-3 read.
On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
2     the Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 Glorious things of you are spoken,
    O city of God. Selah

It is God who established Jerusalem as His holy city. Long before Israel existed, Jerusalem was a city. At one time King Melchizedek ruled there, he served The LORD as His priest and blessed Abraham and his future descendants (Genesis 14:17-24). God chose Jerusalem and favored her with His presence by allowing His temple to be built there. Jerusalem is the place where the foundations of Christianity were laid in the laws, Davidic line, and sacrifices. It is where Jesus taught, outside her gates He died and rose from the dead. It is where the Holy Spirit came on Pentecost and it is where salvation was offered first to the Jews and then given to the world.
But Jerusalem, Zion is more than an ancient city and more than a geographical city. It is more than the capital of Israel, the spiritual seat of Judaism or birthplace of Christianity. Zion is the people, the city of God is God’s treasured possession. Jerusalem was how the world understood God. Psalm 48:1-3 describes her this way,
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God!
His holy mountain, 2 beautiful in elevation,
is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
the city of the great King.
3 Within her citadels God
has made himself known as a fortress.

Jesus also referred to Jerusalem as the city of the great king (Matthew 5:35). Who is the great king? Was Jesus talking about Melchizedek, David, or Solomon? He was referring to Himself. The Lord is the great King. Jerusalem is the city of God. Believer, you and I are the city of God. Matthew 5:14-16 in The Living Bible reads,
You are the world’s light—a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.  Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father.

And Deuteronomy 7:6-8 tells us,
For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Revelation 21:22-27 describes Zion also called New Jerusalem like this,
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

What glorious things does this Psalm speak about Zion? It refers to a record of kept by God regarding Zion’s citizens, it refers to the Lamb’s book of life. Verses 4-7 read,
4 Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon;
behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush--
“This one was born there,” they say.
5 And of Zion it shall be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her”;
for the Most High himself will establish her.
6 The Lord records as he registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah

7 Singers and dancers alike say,
“All my springs are in you.”

Verse 4 refers to Rahab and Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush. None are Jewish nations. Rahab was a prostitute living in Jericho who helped Joshua’s spies and saved their lives. When the city fell, Rahab was saved (Joshua 2). Her name reminds us that there were people who were not Jews who did not keep the laws and were saved by God’s grace. Rahab is the symbolic name of Egypt in the Bible and in verse 4 it refers to Egypt along with the other nations and cities listed who had long-lasting enmity with Israel. Yet, they will be counted as citizens, not naturalized citizens but citizens born there. They are no longer strangers, we are citizens, we are part of the actual structure of the city. Ephesians 2:19-22 reads,
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
In Christ, both Israel and her enemies can be transformed, born again into new creations, citizens of Heaven, the Kingdom of God. We are not naturalized citizens even though we were adopted and grafted in. It is as if we were born in the city and grown from the vine because we are new creatures, born of water and Spirit. That is only something only God can do. Ephesians 2:8-10 reads,
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 1:3-6 in The Living Bible puts it this way,
How we praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every blessing in heaven because we belong to Christ.
4 Long ago, even before he made the world, God chose us to be his very own through what Christ would do for us; he decided then to make us holy in his eyes, without a single fault—we who stand before him covered with his love. 5 His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by sending Jesus Christ to die for us. And he did this because he wanted to!
6 Now all praise to God for his wonderful kindness to us and his favor that he has poured out upon us because we belong to his dearly loved Son.

Philippians 3:20-21 reminds us we are citizens of Zion not this world.
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Believer, The City of God belongs to Him. It is His treasured possession. He is our King and we glorify Him. One day soon we will live eternally as the Bride of Christ in the city He has prepared for us, perfectly united with Him and one another. Let’s remember who we are. Let’s reflect who He is to the wanderers of this world looking for home.

Psalm 48 Zion, The Eternal City of God

Psalm 48

This Psalm of the Sons of Korah is titled Zion, the City of Our God. The psalmist wrote about Jerusalem, but he prophetically wrote about New Jerusalem, God’s eternal city. Verses 1-3 read,

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God!
His holy mountain, 2 beautiful in elevation,
is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
the city of the great King.
3 Within her citadels God
has made himself known as a fortress.”

Jerusalem was not great because of her people or her buildings. She was great because God resided there in the Ark of the Covenant. Later the Temple would be built and the Ark would be placed there. Now you and I are the city of God and He indwells us. One day New Jerusalem will come down from Heaven and it will be truly awesome. God will be there in every way. Revelation 21:2-4 describe our future home.

“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Jerusalem was a joy to the world because that is where Jesus was arrested and just outside the city walls He was crucified in order to give us a way to friendship with God. In New Jerusalem, Jesus will be our light, we will have no need of a sun or moon because Jesus is there. Revelation 21:22-27 reads,

“And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.”

The people of Jerusalem felt completely safe from her enemies. God fought for her against them and until He chose to let Jerusalem be taken it was a fortress of a city. The victory being celebrated in this Psalm was one against the Assyrians, in which the Holy Spirit visited the Assyrian camp and suddenly killed 185,000 men. God protected that city from her enemies. He fought for His people then, and He fights for us now. No one can hurt us. He is our Avenger and Protector. Verses 4-8 say,

“For behold, the kings assembled;
    they came on together.
5 As soon as they saw it, they were astounded;
they were in panic; they took to flight.
6 Trembling took hold of them there,
anguish as of a woman in labor.
7 By the east wind you shattered
    the ships of Tarshish.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of hosts,
in the city of our God,
which God will establish forever. Selah”

New Jerusalem will be the city established forever. Jerusalem was thought to completely safe, it was because God protected it. But, because The Lord had to discipline His people He did eventually allow Jerusalem to be taken by enemies. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took the city and she sat empty and desolate for seventy years until King Cyrus allowed the Israelites to return and rebuild. (2 Chronicles 36:17-21, Ezra 1:1-40). New Jerusalem will be absolutely impenetrable by the enemy. God will not only protect us in that city, He will be there with us. Revelation 21:9-14 describes the walls and beauty of Zion, our wedding gift from The Lord this way,

“Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— 13 on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”

After the Assyrians ran home in defeat, the people of Jerusalem worshipped and praised God. God saved His people from the enemy. He saved us from the enemy as well. God’s enemy is defeated. We praise Him all day long for our salvation. He loves us immeasurably. New Jerusalem is for us from Him. It is literally, Heaven on Earth. It is not for anyone who can’t appreciate the goodness, greatness, and holiness of The Lord. It is for His children. We will worship our Mighty God forever. Verses 8-11 read,

“We have thought on your steadfast love, O God,
in the midst of your temple.
10 As your name, O God,
so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11     Let Mount Zion be glad!
Let the daughters of Judah rejoice
    because of your judgments!”

After their victory the citizens of Jerusalem acknowledged it was God who had saved them as they looked at their beautiful city, the city of God. They gave Him the glory and they remembered so they could teach each generation after them. Verses 12-14 read,

“Walk about Zion, go around her,
    number her towers,
13 consider well her ramparts,
    go through her citadels,
that you may tell the next generation
14     that this is God,
our God forever and ever.
    He will guide us forever.”

We haven’t seen New Jerusalem, but we can imagine what she will be like. We have the Spirit of God to give us a foretaste. We have descriptions like those in Revelation 21. It will be stunning but its real beauty will come not from the pearl gates or jewel adornments. It will come from the presence of God. Its safety won’t come from its walls made of gold, but from The Lord.  It is not a secret to be kept, but a promise to be shared. Envision the magnificence of God with us, not only in Spirit but in totality, face to face. The love, the joy, and the peace of God forever and ever.

Ezekiel 40-48 The Lord Is There

The Lord Is There. That is the glorious name of New Jerusalem. That is the awesome name of the City of God. You are the City of God. Is Jesus there?
Ezekiel Chapters 40-48

In these eight chapters of Ezekiel, The Lord gives Ezekiel very specific instructions, ordinances and measurements for the reestablishment of Israel, the Temple, and the land. He was restoring Israel and the covenant that she had so brashly thrown away. But Faithful God kept it even when they didn’t. These instructions were given fourteen years after Jerusalem had been taken, and in the middle of Israel’s captivity. It gave them hope, a reminder that they were still God’s people and He was still their God.

In Chapters 40-44 Jesus and as He shows Ezekiel the restored temple and its specifications, He shows us a glimpse of what the promise of New Jerusalem. Chapter 40 verses 2-4 describe Him.

“In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel, and set me down on a very high mountain, on which was a structure like a city to the south. 3 When he brought me there, behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord and a measuring reed in his hand. And he was standing in the gateway. 4 And the man said to me, “Son of man, look with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you, for you were brought here in order that I might show it to you. Declare all that you see to the house of Israel.”

His instructions for Ezekiel were serious and they are important for us as well. Ezekiel had to hear, see, and understand what the Lord was telling him in order to obey Him. We also must look with our eyes, hear with our ears, and set our heart upon all that Jesus shows us so that we can obey and declare it to the world. God brought Ezekiel to the mountain for a reason. He brings us to the places in our lives for a purpose as well. He wants to teach us, show us, and tell us and He wants us to testify with our words, deeds, and lives.

In chapter 43 Ezekiel sees the Glory of the Lord coming just as he had seen in Chebar when the Lord came to destroy the city, but now He came to restore it. As He came Ezekiel fell on His face in worship, awe, and fear. Verses 4-7 read,

“As the glory of the Lord entered the temple by the gate facing east, 5 the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

6 While the man was standing beside me, I heard one speaking to me out of the temple, 7 and he said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the people of Israel forever. And the house of Israel shall no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoring and by the dead bodies of their kings at their high places”

God’s presence is the most important aspect of the Temple. He is the most vital part of us as His temple as well. We can’t have a relationship with Him if He isn’t invited into it. We can’t have a relationship with Him if we have muddied it with idolatry.

The chapters continue with rules, laws, and edicts concerning the Temple, worship, feasts, and the land. Most are not new instructions but some are a bit stricter than before. Chapter 44 describes the East Gate and requires it to be kept shut. No one may enter or leave by that gate to remind Israel that that is the gate by which the Lord entered and He is there, the core of who they are and His presence is the most important aspect of the law.

In chapter 47 Ezekiel is brought back to the Temple and sees a water trickling out of the south gate of the temple. As Jesus measures the water coming out though it becomes deeper and deeper until it is no longer a trickle but a flowing river so deep Ezekiel couldn’t pass through it but He could swim in it. Verses 6-12 read,

“And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7 As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river very many trees on the one side and on the other. 8 And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh.9 And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. 10 Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. 12 And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”

What an amazing vision of Jesus Christ. He is our righteousness. He is the living water. He brings truth and life. The gospel which was first preached in Jerusalem at the very temple and gate where Ezekiel saw the water trickle out was then preached further and further out until the whole world benefited from the life giving liberty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Where Jesus is, there is life, fruit, and healing.

The remainder of chapter 47 and 48 give measurements of the land and its divisions and there is an inference to these measurements not being about the Jerusalem Ezekiel knew but some other place, more spiritual than physical. Chapter 48 ends with a description and measurements of the gates of the City. There are twelve gates, three on each side of the perfect square, just like the description of New Jerusalem in Revelation. The name of the city is not called Jerusalem any longer. Verse 35 ends with “And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The Lord Is There.”

How awesome is that name? The Lord Is There! He is, and He is never leaving. I am a citizen of that city. Are you? Is Jesus your Lord? Does He live in your heart? Do you declare it to the world? Does the Living Water flow out from you and give life to others? Are you sealed with the Holy Spirit? Is your relationship with the Father pure? You and I, Believer are the Temple of God, the City on the Mountain. The Lord is there! God is with us!

Ezekiel 36 Restored for God's Glory

Ezekiel Chapter 36

God had poured His wrath out on Israel. He had allowed Jerusalem to be devastated. The nations all around them cheered at the catastrophes they faced. The Lord dealt with Israel for her sin. He dealt with the other nations for their hate. Now it was time to restore Israel, His people. He would restore Israel so that the other nations would take note. He restored them so that everyone would know He is the Lord.

Verses 7-9 read,

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: I swear that the nations that are all around you shall themselves suffer reproach.

8 “But you, O mountains of Israel, shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for they will soon come home. 9 For behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown.”

When God is for you, who can be against you? He dealt with all the nations that took advantage of Israel during her weakness and cheered over her hardships. He dealt with Israel who had defamed and defiled His name, who had worshipped idols, and been utterly despicable. Verses 22-24 say,

“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.23 And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.”

The Lord promised to restore and heal broken Israel. He does the same today for His children. He brings the penitent to Him, He heals, He allows us to know Him, and He gives us the ability to walk in Him and glorify His name. The change He makes are visible to those around us. He glorifies His holiness, His love, His awesome name. Verses 26-32 read,

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. 30 I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations.

He removes our old attitude of stubbornness. He gives us His Spirit so that we will be able to walk in faith. He rescues us from sin. He provides. He changes us completely from who we once were to become His. He transforms us to the image of Christ. He does all these wonderful things for us, so that all people will know He is the Lord, so that all people will have the chance to come to Him, repent, and be His.

God’s restoration of His children is not partial. It is whole and it is awesome. It is not for our fame or exultation, it is for His. His purpose is not so you can keep His love to yourself but so that everyone will know He is the Lord God. What He does in us is so big it has to be Him that does it. No self-help book, 12-step program, or self-discipline can bring about such an absolute change. Verses 35-36 read,

“Thus says the Lord God: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. 35 And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.”

When He does this for us, He also gives us the ability and even the desire to ask it for others, for those who hate us, for those who snub the Lord, and for those who wander lost and ignorant of Him. God salvation started with Israel but He also gave it to other nations through Israel. God saved you, but He will also save the people around you through the testimony of what Jesus Christ did in you. Verses 37-38 say,

“Thus says the Lord God: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: to increase their people like a flock. 38 Like the flock for sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Ezekiel 35 Bystanders are Just as Guilty as Perpetrators

Ezekiel Chapter 35

Mount Seir in Edom bordered Judah. It was where Esau made his home. They could have helped Jerusalem when Nebuchadnezzar attacked but instead they eagerly waited for the city to be destroyed so they could take the left overs. The city could have been a neighbor and friend to Israel and Judah, but they chose hostility instead. They didn’t take part in the siege against Jerusalem. They stood back and watched as if it were a football game. They rooted for Babylon and cheered at the violence, blood, and tragedy that Babylon brought. Verses 5-6 put it this way,

“Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you.”

Standing by and do nothing while the strong victimize the weak is the same as joining in.  The people in the circle watching the bully beat the smaller person are just as guilty of the beating as the tyrant. Regardless if they enjoyed the bloodshed or not, they did nothing. They allowed it to go on without an attempt to stop it, or even a protest.

Even worse for Edom was the fact that Israel and Judah belonged to the Lord. They still loathed them. They still chose to sit by and let disaster hit and even celebrated it. They let their envy turn to hatred. They puffed themselves up with pride and made excuses to pardon their wicked choices. But Israel and Judah did belong to God, and Edom had to pay for her sin. Verse 15 reads,

“As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Indifference to the hardships of others allows tragedy to flourish. Celebrating the misfortune of others is on par with perpetrating the blows yourself.

When God allows trials and tribulations it is for a good purpose. He sent Nebuchadnezzar to attack Jerusalem. But that doesn’t mean He was happy about it. And it doesn’t give others license to delight over their suffering or stand by then swoop in like a vulture and scavenge the remains.

We can find the encouragement in this chapter. God will protect and avenge His children. People may consider you odious just for proclaiming Jesus’ name. But you do not have to fight them. You do not have to return the hate. You are free to love them. Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:43-48

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Wouldn’t you want the people who torment you to have some compassion and forgiveness toward you? Then you ought to have some compassion and forgiveness toward them. Let the Lord deal with them. After all you want what He wants and that is for everyone to come to know Him and be saved. He’s got this. Don't reciprocate the hate.

Ezekiel 24:15-27 How Do You Respond When Your Heart is Broken?

Ezekiel Chapter 24 Verses 15-27

Ezekiel suffered many things as the Lord’s prophet. He was mute and bound unless prophesying, he had stayed in uncomfortable positions for very long periods of time, eaten disgusting foods, and no one listened to him because the words he gave were not the words they wanted to hear. But in chapter 24 Ezekiel experienced one of the worst events I can imagine he had to go through. Verses 15-18 read,

“The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, behold, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you at a stroke; yet you shall not mourn or weep, nor shall your tears run down. 17 Sigh, but not aloud; make no mourning for the dead. Bind on your turban, and put your shoes on your feet; do not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.” 18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. And on the next morning I did as I was commanded.”

Ezekiel’s wife died suddenly. God described her as being the delight of Ezekiel’s eyes.  Ezekiel loved her, but was not permitted to mourn publicly for her. In public he had to act as if nothing was wrong. He couldn’t honor his wife’s memory. He went out among the people, who knew if he was out and speaking there was a purpose. They all asked him why he was not grieving the death of his wife and why he was acting like everything was normal. He couldn’t accept condolences from anyone. He couldn’t even eat the casseroles his neighbors brought him but instead had to just keep going on as if his heart wasn’t broken. Verses 21-24 say,

“Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the yearning of your soul, and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword. 22 And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men. 23 Your turbans shall be on your heads and your shoes on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away in your iniquities and groan to one another. 24 Thus shall Ezekiel be to you a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.”

The Temple would be taken by the enemy. The Temple was supposed to be dear to God’s people. It represented His presence among them, His favor of Israel as His very own people, and the relationship they should have shared. The taking of the Temple was the climax of the siege of Jerusalem. It meant that the enemy had won. It meant everything Ezekiel had prophesied had happened. Judgment had arrived.

But like Ezekiel had not mourned for his wife, Jerusalem and Israel would not mourn for the Temple. Although overwhelmed with despair, there was no time to cry and there was too much to cry for. Sons, daughters, and hopes of the future were dying in Jerusalem while the hearers were in captivity, helpless to do anything. And rather than lament their sins which had led to the judgment, they would play the blame game, as often happens when unpleasant incidents occur. They would grumble, complain and whine instead of properly grieving and taking responsibility for what had happened.

They would hear about when the Temple was profaned not by prophecy through Ezekiel but by an escapee from Jerusalem who would deliver the horrible news to them. They would know then it was real, it had happened, and they would hear a first-hand account of the atrocities that had taken place. God would give them a sign though. On the day the fugitive arrived to tell them the news, Ezekiel would no longer be mute, but would be able to speak whether he prophesied or not. And since Jerusalem had been destroyed, his prophecies would be about other subjects.

When catastrophic events happen to you or around, your response matters. Is your response graceful and compassionate or is it accusing and self-seeking? Does your reaction lead you to become more like Christ as you glean the lessons or does it lead others to hate Christ as you moan and groan?

Jesus wept when Lazarus died. People understood the deep love Jesus had for His friend. Mourning is allowed. But what is it that you are mourning? When tragedy comes into your life, do you cry over all you’ve lost and stay down like a victim or do you grieve your loss, reflect on it, get up and keep going?

We mourn, whine, grumble and complain about how bad our lives are. We focus on ourselves and don’t care about how the calamity might affect anyone else. We cry out ‘why me?’ and never listen for the answer. Or we choose to listen. We grieve the sins we have committed and that leads to repentance. We mourn the loss of people and things and we learn to go on without them. We let the Spirit comfort us. We lean on Him for understanding, peace and even joy through all of it.

Ezekiel 24:1-14 Only God Can Clean the Unlcean

Ezekiel Chapter 24 Verses 1-14

God spoke to Ezekiel and Israel and told them that Babylon was laying siege to Jerusalem. The prophecy of destruction they had been warned about repeatedly was happening. He then gave them a parable about a pot of soup. It probably brought to mind Jeremiah’s prophecy about the same event from to mind (The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.” Jeremiah 1:13).

Verses 3-5 read,

“And utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the Lord God:

“Set on the pot, set it on;
    pour in water also;
4 put in it the pieces of meat,
    all the good pieces, the thigh and the shoulder;
    fill it with choice bones.
5 Take the choicest one of the flock;
    pile the logs under it;
boil it well;
seethe also its bones in it.”

That soup sounds delicious at first. But then the choicest one of the flock is added to the recipe, not just the marrow bones and the good pieces of meat, but the entire animal, bones, blood, organs, prime meat, and inferior meat. What would have been excellent has been tainted and is unclean. Verses 6-7 continue the parable.

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice.7 For the blood she has shed is in her midst; she put it on the bare rock; she did not pour it out on the ground to cover it with dust.”

Jerusalem represented by the pot, and the people in it represented by the meat in the soup would not and could not escape their fate.

The Lord continues in verses 10-12,

“Heap on the logs, kindle the fire, boil the meat well, mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned up. 11 Then set it empty upon the coals, that it may become hot, and its copper may burn, that its uncleanness may be melted in it, its corrosion consumed.12 She has wearied herself with toil; its abundant corrosion does not go out of it. Into the fire with its corrosion!”

The corrosion of the fire on the pot makes its contents inedible, the fire and the dust of the ground make the meat removed unpalatable. The entire pot of soup became useless and needed to be wasted. The people of Jerusalem had become so defiled that they were past the point of fixing. Once copper has contaminated food, it is ruined.

Verses 13-14 read,

“On account of your unclean lewdness, because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your uncleanness, you shall not be cleansed anymore till I have satisfied my fury upon you. 14 I am the Lord. I have spoken; it shall come to pass; I will do it. I will not go back; I will not spare; I will not relent; according to your ways and your deeds you will be judged, declares the Lord God.”

No priest, false god, nor idol could fix the problems in Israel. Only the LORD God, The Holy One of Israel could cleanse them. He had given them multiple chances to turn to Him, but they had flouted every opportunity. So He let them have their way. He let the defilement they had chosen be what destroyed them as Nebuchadnezzar came and laid waste to Jerusalem.

Only God can clean the unclean, forgive our iniquity, and make us whole. No self-help program can heal our wounds. No philosophy can cleanse us from sin. They may seem to help a little. They may put a salve on the pain, or temporary stitches in the wound, but they just cover up they do not heal. Only the Lord can forgive us, heal us, and make us clean. Jesus does for us what no amount of positive thinking or unity with the universe can do. It doesn’t take twelve steps to be whole. It doesn’t take charms, or rituals. It is as simple as 1 John 1:5-10 says it is.

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Israel could have conceded their sinfulness to the Lord, He already knew about it, just like He knew about ours. But they chose to continue walking in the dark, practicing idolatry, and hiding their evil.

Have you admitted your sinfulness to yourself and to God? Have you realized your need of forgiveness and asked Jesus to cover you with His blood and make you righteous? That is all it takes. There is nothing more than admitting your sin asking Jesus to be your Lord. He cleans it all away and when your Father in Heaven looks at you, He doesn’t see a defiled sinful person, He see the righteousness of Christ. He sees His beloved child.

You can turn to all the self-help books and religions of the world to try and improve yourself. You can become one with the universe and expand your consciousness but that won’t restore your relationship with the Creator of the Universe. Or you can become one with The Creator through Jesus Christ and be sealed by the Holy Spirit and restored to the Father by accepting the gift of salvation.

Ezekiel 23 Two Adulterous Sisters

3/9/2015

Ezekiel Chapter 23

In this chapter the Lord compares Samaria and Jerusalem to two sisters named Oholah and Oholibah, Oholah is Samaria the capitol of Israel, and Oholibah is Jerusalem the capitol of Judah. The name Oholah means tent, the tent of God is Samaria, the capital of Israel. Oholibah means My [God's] tent is therein, indicating the Temple which is located in Jerusalem. (JewishEncyclopedia.com, 2011).

Oholah or Samaria, the older sister cheated first. She cheated with Egypt, then Assyria. The Lord let Assyria have her and she was destroyed. Verse 10 describes Samaria’s destruction.

“These uncovered her nakedness; they seized her sons and her daughters; and as for her, they killed her with the sword; and she became a byword among women, when judgment had been executed on her.”

Samaria went the way of the surrounding nations. She adopted their customs, their idols, and their religions and became so much like them that she was indistinguishable from them. Samaria’s reputation was so bad we are still aware of the derision against them today when we read about the Good Samaritan or The Woman at the Well.

But did that teach Oholibah or Jerusalem not to go the way of her sister? No, Oholibah went further than Oholah. She sinned with Egypt and Assyria, but then she lusted after Chaldea. She looked for opportunities to cheat and invited them to her bed. She made her promiscuity known to every nation. She brought those lewd acts into God’s sacred places. She defiled herself and the Temple. God turned His face from her in disgust but that didn’t stop her. He warned her that she would have the same fate as her sister. But she only increased her infidelity. Verses 36-42 in The Message read,

“Then God said to me, “Son of man, will you confront Oholah and Oholibah with what they’ve done? Make them face their outrageous obscenities, obscenities ranging from adultery to murder. They committed adultery with their no-god idols, sacrificed the children they bore me in order to feed their idols! And there is also this: They’ve defiled my holy Sanctuary and desecrated my holy Sabbaths. The same day that they sacrificed their children to their idols, they walked into my Sanctuary and defiled it. That’s what they did—in my house!

40-42 “Furthermore, they even sent out invitations by special messenger to men far away—and, sure enough, they came. They bathed themselves, put on makeup and provocative lingerie. They reclined on a sumptuous bed, aromatic with incense and oils—my incense and oils! The crowd gathered, jostling and pushing, a drunken rabble. They adorned the sisters with bracelets on their arms and tiaras on their heads.”

Samaria forgot the Lord and was divorced and destroyed. Jerusalem forgot the Lord and ignored the lessons she might have learned from Samaria. She flouted the warnings to repent and so God decided to let her pay for her sins. Verse 35 reads,

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you yourself must bear the consequences of your lewdness and whoring.”

The Lord said that the righteous would pass judgment on her they would call her what she was a murderer and an adulterer. He said the sentence for that verdict would be public death by stoning and swords. She would become the example of what happens to an idolatrous nation.

The upright can look at the offender and recognize the sin and call it what it is. She doesn’t do it to call the sinner out, she does it so that she doesn’t participate. She sees the obscenity and steers clear instead of partaking and thereby giving her endorsement, which would be taken as God’s approval.

The lost need to know they are lost, not by our accusations but by our testimony and love. They need to know God loves them and wants a relationship with them. They need the chance to accept Jesus as their Savior. If they reject Him, then their sins on their own heads and they must pay the price. But if they accept Him, then He takes their sins onto His head and pays the price.

Have you made a practice of sinning? Has God warned you repeatedly to stop? Have you seen the examples of immorality around you and still choose to close your eyes to God? God will not force you into a relationship with Him. You are free to keep living life any way you choose. But if you disregard God, He will let you pay the price for your sins just as you’ve chosen to do.

Ezekiel 15 A Fruitless Vine is Barely Firewood

Ezekiel Chapter 15

In this chapter the Lord compared Jerusalem to a vine. Verses 2-3 read,

“Son of man, how does the wood of the vine surpass any wood, the vine branch that is among the trees of the forest? 3 Is wood taken from it to make anything? Do people take a peg from it to hang any vessel on it?”

Vines grow in various places but one thing all vines have in common is their tendency to grow toward the sun. In the forest where sunlight is harder to come by vines can be quite aggressive and these kind of vines when planted in a garden or other landscape will be invasive and take over, choking out the other plants.  Most vines can’t even support themselves, they must attach to a tree, a wall or some other structure.

What good is a vine on its own? It has no useful purpose except as fuel for a fire. What if it is rescued from the fire? The partially burned vine is even less useful and still can only kindling. The Lord compared to Jerusalem to vines. He said she was good for nothing and even the fire didn’t improve her. Those whom He had rescued would still only be thrown back into the fire as tinder. Verses 6-7 put it this way,

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so have I given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 7 And I will set my face against them. Though they escape from the fire, the fire shall yet consume them, and you will know that I am the Lord, when I set my face against them.”

But vines are good for something when they are properly cared for. When the vinedresser plants them, when they are attached to a strong and good vine they produce fruit. Without the vinedresser and without the true vine there is no fruit. Fruitless branches are pruned and thrown into the fire before they can invade the other branches and make the entire thing unserviceable and nonproductive. In John chapter 15 verses 1-6 Jesus describes it like this,

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.”

The Israelites just wouldn’t abide in the Lord. Jerusalem saw herself as something special, above reproach and protected by God. But she refused to let the Lord be her God. She didn’t rest in Him nor depend on Him. She looked elsewhere for help and rather than be a rich vineyard full of grapes for wine and food, she was a fruitless bramble good only to fuel a fire.

We are no more special than they were. We can’t bear fruit on our own. We need to be grafted into Jesus, the True Vine. We need His righteousness to produce His fruit in us. It is the fruit of the Spirit, the harvest of goodness that shows who we are and glorifies the Lord God, our Father.

Abiding in the Jesus, doesn’t mean sweating and struggling to create fruit in ourselves. It means resting in Him and letting His righteousness, His virtue and goodness do its work in us and allowing Him to form and grow the fruit in us. John 15:7-9 read,

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.”

Just stay in Jesus’ love. Just remain in Him. Stay faithful to Him and let Him be God. We do that by obeying Him. What are His commandments? Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew22:36-39).  Jesus simplified it for us, He said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).

All vines grow toward the sun. Are you getting your sustenance to grow from the sun of this world or from the Son of God? Is your support structure a tree or the True Vine? Are you a fruitful vine? When people look at you do they see evidence of God? Is He glorified in your life or are you glorified in your life? Do you desire the ability to love as Jesus loves and receive it when you ask? Do you love others by God’s great power?

What is the fruit you should be bearing? The characteristics of Jesus, whose image you are being conformed to by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-24 read,

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

If you aren’t bearing fruit, if God isn’t glorified in your life, then ask yourself if you are truly grafted into Jesus, if you truly depend on Him and only Him. If not then repent and ask Him to graft you in and give you life. If you are grafted in and yet you see no good fruit, maybe you are not truly abiding in Jesus. Maybe you are not loving one another as Jesus loves you. Do you have some “one-anothers” to love and be loved by? You are not the only branch on the vine. Look around and love your one-anothers.

You can’t produce your own fruit. Only the True Vine can give you what you need. Only He can produce the fruit in you. Only the Vinedresser can properly prune, trim, and shape you properly to ensure your fruit is bountiful and prime.

Ezekiel Chapter 5 God Disciplines Those He Loves

2/12/2015

Ezekiel chapter 5 is a description of the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Chaldeans. Before Ezekiel told the captives this prophecy he had to shave his head and beard with a sword. He had to weigh the hair out and destroy a third of it in the fire in the midst of the city, strike a third of it with the sword, and scatter a third part to the wind. But he was also to take a small part of the hair and bind them in the skirts of his robe, then take a part of that hair and burn it in the fire. God said, “From there a fire will come out into all the house of Israel.” (Verse 4).

God is always precise in His actions. He didn’t decide willy nilly to punish. He knew exactly who, how many, and how He was judging. Ezekiel had to shave all his hair, not just trim it. That meant that the judgment was a purging not just a refining. No one in Jerusalem would escape God’s judgment but a few would be kept there.

Then Ezekiel was told to give the captives God’s prophecy. The prophecy begins with the reasons the Lord was going to do this. Verses 5-6 read,

“Thus says the Lord God: This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6 And she has rebelled against my rules by doing wickedness more than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries all around her; for they have rejected my rules and have not walked in my statutes.”

God had given Israel this country. He had given her His Law and His covenant, yet they rebelled and rejected them. They behaved in a fashion worse than the surrounding nations, who didn’t have the benefit of God’s guidance and Law. They were not the example of His people that they could have been, so God was going to punish them and make them an example to all the nations. Verse 9-12 describe the judgments.

“Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will withdraw. My eye will not spare, and I will have no pity. 12 A third part of you shall die of pestilence and be consumed with famine in your midst; a third part shall fall by the sword all around you; and a third part I will scatter to all the winds and will unsheathe the sword after them.”

God was very angry. And Israel’s punishment was going to be worse than anyone had ever seen before. Why? Because Israel was His people. They were His people and He was their God. Imagine two children are misbehaving badly. They have broken your number one rule.  One child is the neighbor and the other is your son. You don’t get nearly as upset with the neighbor as you do with your son. And when you punish them, it is to send the neighbor home but your child receives the brunt of your discipline and anger. In your love for him, your emotions burn brighter than when you dealt with someone else’s child. His behavior reflects on you. You want the best for him, so you punishment for your own child will be more harsh. That is how it is for God and His children. He loves us enough to discipline us.

There are some offenses that can’t be corrected with a time-out and a talk. Sometimes an act needs something harsher, something that says the transgression weighs heavier than another. Sometimes we find the time-outs are just not working. It is in those cases that discipline requires more than a reprimand. Israel had done abominations against God. They had behaved worse than even the heathen nations. God was finished with the warnings and the lectures. He had to punish them.

We will be an example to the world. Whether we are a reflection of Jesus or an illustration of disobedience, our lives are a testimony. If we are obedient then discipline need not be difficult. But if we are rebellious and stubborn then God will care enough to do what He must. If we refuse to let His discipline train us, then God will use it to teach others.
