Isaiah 45 God is enough

Read Isaiah Chapter 45

The chapter talks about Cyrus. Cyrus was the king of Babylon, the country that had taken Israel into long captivity. But God had chosen Cyrus to be His instrument. Cyrus was going to be the king who delivered Israel to freedom and end their imprisonment. He was a Mede, not an Israelite. He was the king of Persia not of Israel. Yet it was this man who was chosen by The LORD to deliver Israel. It was this man whom God equipped and gifted to do redeem His people.

God is Almighty and sovereign. He can do anything. He often does things for us in ways we would never expect. He used the king of a nation who had kept His children captive for 70 years to be the rescuer. Verses 4-7 describe God choosing Cyrus.

“For the sake of my servant Jacob,
    and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
    I name you, though you do not know me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other,
    besides me there is no God;
    I equip you, though you do not know me,
6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun
    and from the west, that there is none besides me;
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness,
    I make well-being and create calamity,
    I am the Lord, who does all these things.”

God’s plans are perfect. His ways are perfect. We do not make the plans and tell the Lord how to do it. (He knows we try) God says, “Trust Me” and then does what needs to be done in His way. God doesn’t give us a job to do and leave us to it alone. He calls us and gives us everything we need to get it done, and He goes ahead of us and does it.

When I go out on the street and share the gospel with someone. It isn’t me. It is God. He prepared me, He gave me gifts. He set the appointment for me to meet this person or that. He speaks through me. He softens the heart. He does the miracle. He saves. All I have to do is trust. And even if I didn’t God could use anyone even a person who doesn’t know Him. He is God. He doesn’t need a single person to do anything for Him, but He chooses to let us partner with Him. Verse 8 reads,

“Shower, O heavens, from above,
    and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
    let the earth cause them both to sprout;
    I the Lord have created it.”

It is a privilege to be used by the Lord. He allows you to serve Him. How wonderful it is to serve Him. How amazing to be a witness to His awesome goodness.

Do you question His ways sometimes? Do you question that you can do the job He gave you? Do you question that you are able? Maybe you think you’re too ugly, introverted, clumsy, or otherwise flawed to do God’s will. God made you, and He made you wonderfully. He is the one who created you and He is the one who chose you. Where is the logic in doubting Him then? Don’t tell God that what He has made isn’t good enough. Verse 9 reads,

“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
    a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
    or ‘Your work has no handles’?”

Don’t you get it? When you doubt you can do what God has appointed you to do, you doubt God. You are saying that the Lord who created the entire universe can’t accomplish what He said He would. He created the universe for a purpose. He created you for a purpose. He wants a relationship with you and He wants a relationship with the guy down the street. In your relationship with Him, as you adore Him and revel in His love, He will be glorified in you. He will show in you and people will come. Let God be God to you. Trust Him, Adore Him, Love Him and see what will happen.

Verses 18-19 read,

“For thus says the Lord,
who created the heavens
    (he is God!),
who formed the earth and made it
    (he established it;
he did not create it empty,
    he formed it to be inhabited!):
“I am the Lord, and there is no other.
19 I did not speak in secret,
    in a land of darkness;
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
    ‘Seek me in vain.’
I the Lord speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.”

Isaiah 32 Follow the Righteous King of Kings, not the Evil Foolishness of the World

Read Isaiah Chapter 32

This chapter begins with a prophecy for Israel about a soon to come king who would be righteous, unlike the evil king that was currently ruling. But it also refers to Jesus, the King of kings and His awesome and eternal reign. Verses 1-4 read,

“Behold, a king will reign in righteousness,
    and princes will rule in justice.
2 Each will be like a hiding place from the wind,
    a shelter from the storm,
like streams of water in a dry place,
    like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.
3 Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed,
    and the ears of those who hear will give attention.
4 The heart of the hasty will understand and know,
    and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.”

Jesus does rule in righteousness. His righteousness is perfect and wonderful. It is so complete that, we under Him are able to call it ours as well. We are at peace with Him and can walk in our lives with justice, peace, and righteousness.

Jesus, Our Lord is our protection, our shelter, and our comfort. He gives us rest from the labor of working toward the impossible goal of perfect virtue. We don’t have to struggle to obey rule after rule anymore because He gives us His shelter and shade. His righteousness covers us.

But He doesn’t keep us in the dark. He lets us in on His wisdom and reveals Himself to us. Our eyes are open and He will not close them. Our ears can hear Him, if we will only listen. He gives us understanding and even gives us a way to express that understanding. Before you knew Jesus, could you grasp any meaning from His Word? Could you make sense of the ridiculous Christians? But once He is your Lord, you get it. His Spirit fills you and now you can comprehend all that stuff that was balderdash before. You have an intimate relationship with The King so much that you get to converse with Him anytime you choose to.

We can look at the world and see the madness and outright silliness of those without Christ. But the world doesn’t see it. They uphold the dupe as wise. They praise irrationality as perception. They don’t know how upside down they have it But One Day, Jesus will be revealed to everyone. One Day the lost will see they are lost. The folly and evil of the world will be shown for what it is. We must not give into the temporary madness of the world but remain noble and stand on the good foundation of Jesus Christ. (Verses 5-8).

Are you diligently standing on Jesus’ Virtue? Don’t become complacent or self-righteous. Do not be so comfortable with the evil of the world that you too see wrong as right and right as wrong. It happens. God will continue to remind you. He will provide you with some trials to get you back on track again. He did it for Israel and Judah time after time, He’ll do it for you too.

Are you in the middle of some trial meant to bring your attention back to The Lord? Have you become so smug that you haven’t noticed? God doesn’t want you to ignore the difficulties in your life. He wants you to pay attention. He wants you to notice your heart and troubles and He wants you to care about the lives being lost all around you. The Message verses 12-13 (approximately) read,

“Shed honest tears for the lost harvest,
    the failed vintage.
Weep for my people’s gardens and farms
    that grow nothing but thistles and thornbushes.
Cry tears, real tears, for the happy homes no longer happy,
    the merry city no longer merry.”

Are you settling for the “righteousness” of the world? Are you a bit too unconcerned? Are you fine just the way you are? Is the trouble in your life causing you to become like Jesus? Or are you enough like Jesus already?

Let the Holy Spirit sweep through you and change you. Repent (Be truly sorry, stop, and turn from your sin to Jesus). Let Him change you. Oh how He wants to fill you up and take all the dross out of your life and fill you with Himself instead. Verses 15-17 read,

“until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high,
    and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
    and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.
16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,
    and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.
17 And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
    and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.”

Oh the awesomeness of what He does! The miracle of salvation, the beauty of transformation, and the wonder of His grace is miraculous. The verses above also refer to The Holy Spirit being given to the gentiles. Remember that Isaiah was written before Jesus walked the earth and before The Holy Spirit was given to us. The Lord told His people, and He tells us, if you won’t accept His Grace, He will give it to people that will. The Israelites wouldn’t accept Christ, so He came to us. His Spirit is gifted to us who accept Him. We can be at peace with God because of Jesus blood and righteousness. We can be so fruitful we become like a vast forest instead of a single tree because of The Holy Spirit.

Choose to follow Jesus. Choose to remain on His path. Recognize the trials and thorns quickly, stay aware of the condition of your heart and spirit so that instead of weeping through God’s discipline you can celebrate His great joy and peace. Are you righteous because of Jesus? Are you being disciplined and shaped by The Holy Spirit to be like Jesus? Or are you a good person who doesn’t need God’s discipline and transformation?

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Isaiah 25

Read Isaiah Chapter 25

Yesterday we read about the destruction of the whole world and the salvation of the few who call Jesus Lord. Today we get to see a glimpse of eternity with God.

Verses 6-9 read,

“On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
    a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,
    of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
7 And he will swallow up on this mountain
    the covering that is cast over all peoples,
    the veil that is spread over all nations.
8     He will swallow up death forever;
and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces,
    and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth,
    for the Lord has spoken.
9 It will be said on that day,
    “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.
    This is the Lord; we have waited for him;
    let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” He will make a feast for us. This celebratory meal isn’t just a one-time thing. It is forever. No more struggling to eat. God’s provision of our needs will be so perfect and complete that even food will be a party and the food will be the best of the best. And the banquet to celebrate coming together with Jesus forever is not even close to the best part.

 He will swallow up death forever. It will be utterly and completely gone. And every tear, every sadness will be comforted and wiped away.

He will be at complete peace with us, without death, with sin, without corruption. There will no longer be any separation between us and our Lord. He is there with us face to face. Our faith in the Invisible will be rewarded by knowing Him completely without the veil and without the separation of natural and supernatural.

Believers, we have a taste of that now! We have peace with God through the blood of Jesus Christ. We have all His awesome wonderful gifts and provision. We know that we have eternal life in Him and with Him. One day it will al come to fruition. One day this brief life that seems so important will be over and our everlasting and infinite life with our Lord will be more than just hope.

Isaiah 24 The End is Near. Is Your Song Making a Difference?

9/8/2014

Read Isaiah Chapter 24

This chapter through chapter 27 contain prophecy that pertains to the End Times and destruction of the whole Earth. It is bleak but only if you are not among the few saved. The Love of God has to reveal Himself in Justice.

Verses 1-3 read,

“Behold, the Lord will empty the earth and make it desolate,
    and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;
    as with the slave, so with his master;
    as with the maid, so with her mistress;
as with the buyer, so with the seller;
    as with the lender, so with the borrower;
    as with the creditor, so with the debtor.
3 The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered;
    for the Lord has spoken this word.”

The tribulations and calamities sent to the earth will not only be to the powerful andrich but also to the weak and poor. Everyone will be affected. Everyone will be equal under the eyes of the wrath of God. Why? Verse 5 reads,

“The earth lies defiled
    under its inhabitants;
for they have transgressed the laws,
    violated the statutes,
    broken the everlasting covenant.”

The earth, the land itself is ruined and chaotic, as is the Earth, the entire world. As the land will no longer produce enough fruit for wine and food for enjoyment the population becomes smaller and weaker, finding less and less to celebrate as they seek to survive. Verses 9-11 read,

“No more do they drink wine with singing;
    strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 The wasted city is broken down;
    every house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
    all joy has grown dark;
    the gladness of the earth is banished.”

But those who praise The LORD will always have something to rejoice in. And they will still sing His praises regardless of the circumstance and desolation. Verses 14-16 read,

“They lift up their voices, they sing for joy;
    over the majesty of the Lord they shout from the west.
15 Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord;
    in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise,
    of glory to the Righteous One.
But I say, “I waste away,
    I waste away. Woe is me!
For the traitors have betrayed,
    with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.”

Even through praising and glorifying the Lord, The Righteous One, Jesus, believers care about the suffering people are going through. We know that this was prophesied long ago, and we have been warning people and continue to do so. We know that God doesn’t want a single one of them to go to Hell and that unless they call on His Name they will. We do care. If we love God, we love who He loves and want what He wants. He loves the lost as much as He loves you and me. He wants them to know Him just as much as He wants to now you and me.

The lost will go from one trouble to another. They will escape snare only to fall in a pit. The trouble on the earth will be horrible. It will shake the foundations of every person whose foundation is not the Rock of Salvation. They will not escape the final judgment. Verses 21-23 read,

“On that day the Lord will punish
    the host of heaven, in heaven,
    and the kings of the earth, on the earth.
22 They will be gathered together
    as prisoners in a pit;
they will be shut up in a prison,
    and after many days they will be punished.
23 Then the moon will be confounded
    and the sun ashamed,
for the Lord of hosts reigns
    on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and his glory will be before his elders.”

So keep glorifying The Lord but do not do so blindly. Let your glory make the Love of God shine. Let your proclamations of Christ be heard to the ends of the earth so that when the End of the Earth comes there will be fewer people gathered into that pit for eternal death. Following Christ is a public walk. It is a walk with a purpose. You are not meant to praise Him quietly in your home and shine a tiny light only big enough for your prayer closet. Your light is meant to shine out into the darkness of the world. There are so many lost and dying desperate to know the way. Let your light guide them to Christ.

Isaiah Chapter 13 If we pretend God's wrath isn't real, we are not loving people.

Read Isaiah Chapter 13

Sometimes as Christians, we want to gloss over the wrath of God and the consequences for not choosing His mercy. But there are consequences to not having Jesus as Lord of your life. Isaiah Chapter 13 brings those costs to vivid light. This chapter is a prophecy concerning what would happen to Babylon but is also prophecy about the symbolic Babylon on The Day of The Lord and what will happen to the people on that terrible Day of Judgment when the Lord deals with them once and for all.

We see The Lord as The God of Hosts, The God of Angel Armies as He calls His angels into service to make war on the evil nation of Babylon. In verses 1-3, a signal is raised and the army gathers.

Verses 4-5 read,

“The sound of a tumult is on the mountains
    as of a great multitude!
The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
    of nations gathering together!
The Lord of hosts is mustering
    a host for battle.
5 They come from a distant land,
    from the end of the heavens,
the Lord and the weapons of his indignation,
    to destroy the whole land”

Even coming together will be an event that strikes terror into people. The sound itself will be frightening. Verses 6-8 describe the fear,

“Wail, for the day of the Lord is near;
    as destruction from the Almighty it will come!
7 Therefore all hands will be feeble,
    and every human heart will melt.
8 They will be dismayed:
    pangs and agony will seize them;
    they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;
    their faces will be aflame.”

The chapter continues with a gruesome look at the God’s wrath and some of what He will do. Verse 9 says His anger will be directed at sinners. They will try to get away but will not. Not one will be spared. Everything they cared for will be destroyed in front of them. Their families, their riches, their glory will be devastated. Everything and everyone will be wiped out.

I occasionally watch a show called Forgotten Planet which shows cities around the world that for some reason or another have been abandoned. It points out that the world keeps moving whether people are there or not. It shows the smallness of man in comparison to nature. Nature overtakes the ghost towns. Animals live where people once did. Plants grow and crumble the buildings that once stood. Weather demolishes what the plants don’t. Verses 20-22 paint that picture of Babylon after the Lord has His vengeance.

“It will never be inhabited
    or lived in for all generations;
no Arab will pitch his tent there;
    no shepherds will make their flocks lie down there.
21 But wild animals will lie down there,
    and their houses will be full of howling creatures;
there ostriches will dwell,
    and there wild goats will dance.
22 Hyenas will cry in its towers,
    and jackals in the pleasant palaces;
its time is close at hand
    and its days will not be prolonged.”

The lost do not want to hear this. The Followers of Christ don’t like to think about it. But it is a fact we need to keep in mind. The wages of sin is death. The wrath of God is horrific. The choice is Jesus and eternal life or self and the wrath of The Almighty God. His love is too great to let the wickedness of the world go unpunished. Vengeance is His and it is dreadful.

You can make a difference. You can tell people the truth and let them choose the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. The time is close at hand.

Isaiah Chapter 12 The LORD is my Strength and my Salvation

9/4/2014

Read Isaiah Chapter 12

Before you were saved, you were at odds with God. You were, quite frankly His enemy. But when you submitted to the authority of Christ as your Lord, His blood for forgave every sin and made you righteous. He made it possible for you to have a relationship with The Father. Holy Spirit entered into you empowering and transforming you.

Believer, are you the same person today you were when you first received the miraculous gift of Salvation? Are you the same person now you were 5 years ago or 1 year ago? Very likely the answer is no. That transformation is not always easy. In fact sometimes it is downright terrible. But we rejoice, because we understand that He is changing us, making us more and more like Jesus each day.

Isaiah Chapter 12 is a song of praise to The LORD for His Salvation. It is 6 verses long, yet it is powerful and beautiful.

Verse 1 reads,

You will say in that day:
“I will give thanks to you, O Lord,
    for though you were angry with me,
your anger turned away,
    that you might comfort me.”

Isn’t that amazing, not only is He no longer angry with us, no longer in contention us but now He comforts us. Part of what Our Comforter does is transform us to be at peace with Him. No longer His enemy, but His friend, child, and representative.

Verses 2-6 read,

“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 And you will say in that day:

“Give thanks to the Lord,
    call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the peoples,
    proclaim that his name is exalted.”

5 “Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be made known in all the earth.
6 Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
    for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

We are given the great privilege of embodying His glory! We proclaim His name, His deeds, His goodness, and His greatness. Not only do we declare these things verbally but by deed and in action. And His comfort, His salvation, and His joy are a never-empty well we can drink from anytime.

Read this chapter again, read it aloud and use it as Praise for God Our Salvation, our Strength and our Song, the Holy One of Israel!

Isaiah Chapter 11

9/3/2014

0 Comments

Isaiah Chapter 11 gives first a beautiful description of Our Messiah, Jesus, it then describes His reign on His Second Coming, and lastly the restoration of the remnant of Israel.

Verses 1-5 read,

“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his loins”

This description of Jesus gives us reason to praise Him and worship Him. He is truly worthy. This particular description focuses on the Kingship and Judgeship of Jesus, not far-off from us but with us in a very real and physical way. Although He is full of mercy and discernment as He judges the meek and the poor, He is also Holy and Righteous as He judges the wicked and speaks their condemnation to them once and for all.

The chapter continues now to describe His reign over Zion when the judgments are complete and there is no more sin there and no more death. Verses 6-9 read,

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze;
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
9 They shall not hurt or destroy
    in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.”

There will be no more predator and prey. The wolf will no longer hunt the lamb. The goat won’t have to fear the leopard. The peace will be so complete what used to be predator and prey can actually be safe enough to sleep together and graze together. Carnivores will be herbivores. Even humans will not have to fear once deadly animals. The instinct to kill and to protect will be gone because it will no longer be necessary. Why? Because “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord.” Not just awareness, but real knowing, deep knowledge of who God is. Every person will know Jesus personally and profoundly. He will be with us, not just in Spirit but there and His Light will flood the earth permanently.

Verse 10 puts it this way,

“In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.”

Do not ever imagine that God has given up on His chosen people. Israel is not forgotten. He promised them that He was their God and they were His people. Isaiah prophecies here about gathering the remnant of Israel in the last days. There will be a time when they finally see the truth that Jesus is the Messiah, when they are no longer a rebellious jealous people but made new in the Love of Christ. All the promises of God will be delivered. Absolute restoration, completion and transformation will be made in all God’s precious children. No enemy will be left. They will all be destroyed. (Verses 11-16).

This is your hope. This is what keeps you going when you struggle and suffer. One day you will live in this place. It is not a dream. It is your future, your eternity. Perfect Peace is yours. Faith allows you to have that peace now. Peace because you know your promise and peace because you are righteous in Christ Jesus. So go ahead, rejoice in your suffering, you know it isn’t without purpose. (Romans 5:3). Go ahead thank the Lord and praise Him regardless of circumstance because you know what eternity holds. You know God now. He is with you now. You have the promise of eternity now. So you can have the peace that no one who doesn’t know The Lord can understand. (Philippians 4:4-7).

Isaiah 10:5-34 You may be the hammer, but it is God doing the swinging.

In Isaiah Chapter 10 Verses 5-34 The Lord is speaking about His judgment against Assyria. He chose to use Assyria as the people who would discipline Israel. He told them to “to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.” (Verse 6). But they were arrogant. They ignored that it was God who raised them up, empowered them and gave Israel to them. They not only plundered, they destroyed.

God may have been angry with Israel, and He may have wanted them to learn a lesson, but they were still His children and God wouldn’t allow anyone to destroy them. So God set His wrath toward Assyria and sent a judgment of wasting sickness down to them.

God uses all kinds of people. He uses the ones who follow Him faithfully. He uses people who curse His name. He uses agnostics, atheists and Satanists. He is God. He can use whomever He chooses and He does. He used Assyria even though their sins were greater than the sins of Israel. (Verses 10-11).

Just because He uses a person doesn’t mean He will not require them to pay for their sins, and it doesn’t mean they will escape punishment. The Father doesn’t like it when you mess with His children. He will punish the people who try to destroy us. (2 Thessalonians 1:6).

It is wonderful to be used by God, but be careful and remember who the Creator is, remember where the power comes from, remember who God is and who the vessel is. Arrogance and pride are dangerous. They will take your eyes off Jesus and put them onto yourself and you won’t even be aware of it. Pride makes it highly unlikely that you would submit to your Lord. Arrogance makes it practically impossible to realize your sin and repent.

Verse 15 reads,

“Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it,
    or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it?
As if a rod should wield him who lifts it,
    or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!”

When God uses you, it is really exciting and wonderful. But you have to remember it is God, not you. With God all things are possible, without Him what is the point? When you pray with a person and God speaks into their life, it is God not you. God spoke the truth and He used your mouth, hands, and faith. When you pray with a person to be healed, it is The Holy Spirit, God our Healer who does the healing, you only spoke, and you only exercised your faith. That faith is faith that He gave you. You could do none of it without Him. It is an amazing privilege to serve God. It is freeing, and wonderful, and powerful. It is all due to Jesus’ Blood, The Father’s Love, and The Spirit’s Power. You submitted, you gave permission. That’s all.

So God struck down arrogant Assyria with a wasting sickness that would not only destroy them but shame them as it did. The enemy of God’s people is His enemy. (Exodus 23:22). You do not want to be an enemy of God. One way to make yourself His enemy is to take credit for His work, like Assyria did.

But God didn’t forsake Israel. Israel is His chosen people. He made a promise to her saying, “And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.” (Leviticus 26:12). He promised you as well, Believer. He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5b). And so He would leave a remnant of Israel and they will have learned who God is.

Verses 20-23 read,

“In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth.”

What that says is this; Out of what was once a vast nation a few ragtag survivors will return finally ready to stop depending on Assyria and once again lean on their Lord, the Holy One of Israel. They will do it sincerely. The destruction was one that brought about righteousness and goodness. It wasn’t the beating of an abusive dad to a child. It was the discipline of a loving Father for His child to bring about good character. One day, God will do the same all over the world. One day His discipline will be complete and the righteous will be complete in Him.

The chapter finishes with God encouraging the remnant who take seriously His authority and strive for obedience that Assyria will be punished and their suffering will soon end. You too can take that encouragement to heart. You have the hope of eternity. One day soon, God will bring His judgment down on everyone. Each and every person will have to face Him and payment will be made. If you are a Believer, then Jesus already made propitiation for your sin. You will have your yoke lifted and your suffering will be over.

Isaiah Chapter 10 Verses 1-4

God hates sin. He abhors it all, yet there is some sin that he loathes and despises more than other sin. You see He loves people and desires for everyone to come to Him. (2 Peter 3:9).

He has a special place in His heart for some people. Widows and orphans are mentioned repeatedly in the Bible. He gives His children a special call to care for them.  James 1:27 reads,

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

Isaiah 1:17 reads,

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”

And Psalm 146:9 reads,

“The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.”

He includes other vulnerable people in in His special love and protection as well; the foreigner, the sick, the prisoner, children, the poor, and the hungry and thirsty.

We as Christ Followers are given commands to specifically care for and love these people. In Isaiah chapter 10, God speaks out against those who have power and use it to hurt them. While God hates all sin, and all sin is punishable by the same offense of eternal separation from God, and all sin requires the blood of Jesus as propitiation, God’s wrath is ignited by mistreatment of the susceptible and defenseless.

Verses 1-4 read,

“Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees,
    and the writers who keep writing oppression,
2 to turn aside the needy from justice
    and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be their spoil,
    and that they may make the fatherless their prey!
3 What will you do on the day of punishment,
    in the ruin that will come from afar?
To whom will you flee for help,
    and where will you leave your wealth?
4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners
    or fall among the slain.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.”

God calls the laws that keep the poor, widows and orphans oppressed iniquitous. Iniquitous means wicked, evil, and immoral. But it is more than just writing laws, it is to turn the needy aside, to allow oppression to continue. So you may not be a congressman and you are not writing laws but that doesn’t mean you have no responsibility. Are you loving the widows, orphans, and poor? To care for their needs is manifestation or fruit of the Spirit within you. Those are the works that prove your faith and show the love of Christ. Those are the deeds that say to the world you are different, you are a Disciple of the Lord Jesus.

Matthew 25:34-40 reads,

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

When you have the chance, do you help the struggling single mother? Do you feed the hungry man in rags on your way to your appointment? Do you visit the prisoner or the sick? One person can’t do it all, but one person can do something. The poor will always be here, but that doesn’t give us license to ignore them and certainly doesn’t give us a right to hurt them. It gives us an opportunity to serve God directly, to do something for Him because His love is so great and because we want to love Him with all our hearts, strength, soul, and mind.

Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 8-21

Read Isaiah Chapter 9 Verses 8-21

This chapter continues the prophecy about the Assyrian Invasion. There is a sort of list of grievances that God has against Israel. I wonder if any of these attitudes and behaviors resemble our own.

Verses 8-10 read,

“The Lord has sent a word against Jacob,
    and it will fall on Israel;
9 and all the people will know,
    Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
    who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen,
    but we will build with dressed stones;
the sycamores have been cut down,
    but we will put cedars in their place.”

Instead of taking to heart what was happening and listening to God to repent, the people were so full of themselves that as damage happened they were saying, “No biggie, we can fix it.” And not only were they ignoring what God was saying to them but when they fixed the problems themselves they were not doing it by God’s criteria. They disregarded the Lord, His plans, His words, and repaired the broken with substandard materials. They made it look good, but it wasn’t.

Do you disregard the Lord? Do you try and fix your own problems? Or do you allow the circumstances in your life to teach you, and bring you closer to Him? Your solutions will never be as good and perfect as what the Lord has planned. Your provision will never be as complete. Your repair will can only be second-rate when compared to the perfection and restoration of what God will do. Looking good on the outside has nothing to do with Jesus Christ’s righteousness, The Father’s grace, or The Spirit’s power.

Verses 15-16 read,

“the elder and honored man is the head,
    and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;
16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,
    and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.”

The people were not turning to God, and they were not turning to their king whom He had put in place. Perhaps they didn’t like the answers they got from The Lord, His true prophets and His king. They looked elsewhere for guidance. They looked to people who would tell them what they wanted to hear.

The Lord tells you go this way, do this. But it’s too hard to forgive, to accept discipline, or choose the right over the easy so instead you listen to the respected and popular voice whose advice is positive, easy to swallow and easy to follow. If you are uncertain about God’s voice, you can be sure of a few things. God speaks from deep love for you. His plan will probably not be the easy one. It requires faith. His plan will not cause you to harm others or otherwise sin. Rather than avoid suffering, His plan makes the trials work to better you.

Verses 19-21 read,

“Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    the land is scorched,
and the people are like fuel for the fire;
    no one spares another.
20 They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry,
    and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied;
each devours the flesh of his own arm,
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh;
    together they are against Judah.
For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.”

When disaster, hunger, and economic ruin hit Israel they only let it fuel the fire of their own desires and hungers. They had no money so they wanted more. They were hungry so they wanted food. And with every little bit they got, they weren’t grateful or satisfied. Getting a little made them want more and more until they turned against one another. They didn’t stand together or help one another. Their greed consumed them.

What about you? When you are short on cash, does the desire for money eat you? Or do you trust the Lord to provide like He promised. When you are hungry, are you thankful for the bread He provided or do you look for the filet mignon to go with it? Would you share the little you have with someone else in need or fight them to get to the front of the soup line before the kitchen closes?

Did you recognize yourself in any of these attitudes? Even a little? That is your Lord, His Spirit is revealing to you these problems. He wants to transform you to His Image. Give it all over to Him. Let Him have His way with you, your heart, your attitudes, and your actions. Let him make you into the image of Christ. How much better is that than the image of Donna? About a bazillion percent. No it is more like ∞%.
