Verses 1-5 read,
“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
and faithfulness the belt of his loins”
This description of Jesus gives us reason to praise Him and worship Him. He is truly worthy. This particular description focuses on the Kingship and Judgeship of Jesus, not far-off from us but with us in a very real and physical way. Although He is full of mercy and discernment as He judges the meek and the poor, He is also Holy and Righteous as He judges the wicked and speaks their condemnation to them once and for all.
The chapter continues now to describe His reign over Zion when the judgments are complete and there is no more sin there and no more death. Verses 6-9 read,
“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
9 They shall not hurt or destroy
in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.”
There will be no more predator and prey. The wolf will no longer hunt the lamb. The goat won’t have to fear the leopard. The peace will be so complete what used to be predator and prey can actually be safe enough to sleep together and graze together. Carnivores will be herbivores. Even humans will not have to fear once deadly animals. The instinct to kill and to protect will be gone because it will no longer be necessary. Why? Because “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord.” Not just awareness, but real knowing, deep knowledge of who God is. Every person will know Jesus personally and profoundly. He will be with us, not just in Spirit but there and His Light will flood the earth permanently.
Verse 10 puts it this way,
“In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.”
Do not ever imagine that God has given up on His chosen people. Israel is not forgotten. He promised them that He was their God and they were His people. Isaiah prophecies here about gathering the remnant of Israel in the last days. There will be a time when they finally see the truth that Jesus is the Messiah, when they are no longer a rebellious jealous people but made new in the Love of Christ. All the promises of God will be delivered. Absolute restoration, completion and transformation will be made in all God’s precious children. No enemy will be left. They will all be destroyed. (Verses 11-16).
This is your hope. This is what keeps you going when you struggle and suffer. One day you will live in this place. It is not a dream. It is your future, your eternity. Perfect Peace is yours. Faith allows you to have that peace now. Peace because you know your promise and peace because you are righteous in Christ Jesus. So go ahead, rejoice in your suffering, you know it isn’t without purpose. (Romans 5:3). Go ahead thank the Lord and praise Him regardless of circumstance because you know what eternity holds. You know God now. He is with you now. You have the promise of eternity now. So you can have the peace that no one who doesn’t know The Lord can understand. (Philippians 4:4-7).
