Cowardice is a Sin

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27
Did you know that the Bible lists cowardice in the same category as murder, sexual immorality, and sorcery?
Revelation 21:8 reads,
“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."
Wow! Fear is as bad as killing? How is that? I know that fear stops you from trying, which stops you from accomplishing. Fear keeps you from enjoying life. Fear stands between you and the gift on the other side of the fear. I know this from personal experience.
Years ago, I was afraid of everything a person could be afraid of. I could not enjoy life because I was only able to watch from the sidelines. One day, God told me to go on a mission trip to The Amazon Jungle of all places. Could any place have so many things I was afraid of all together in one place? That trip changed my life. Every day of that trip I had to do things that scared me like climb ladders, step over a gap, climb steep hills, and deal with bugs. As our trip neared its end, we were enjoying a day of sightseeing.  We were visiting a shop right on the river.  There was a tall rickety old bridge leading back from that shop into the jungle. People were walking along the bridge and I was afraid to cross it. I wanted to do it but I couldn’t make myself move, so I settled for waiting for the others to return. Well one man, decided I was not going to miss and it sternly encouraged me to take the walk along the bridge with him to join the rest of the group. He told me my fear was based on imagination and not reality. I took a deep breath and walked along that rickety old bridge, and there around me were beautiful towering trees and a plethora of birds I had never seen. A monkey moved along the tree tops above us. At the end of the bridge was a lovely little lagoon type of area with giant lily pads, gorgeous flowers, and caiman swimming through the dark water. It was breathtaking! I stood there and marveled at the God’s creation. No description of it could ever have done it justice. I would have missed out on that blessing had I given in to the fear. I would have missed out on the entire trip had I let fear stop me. Before that trip I was afraid of EVERYTHING. After that trip, fear couldn’t stop me from anything.
Fear is not from God. Fear keeps us from doing God’s will, enjoying His gifts and experiencing His fullness.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 reads,
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
We have The Holy Spirit! That Spirit is powerful, we have love, and we have self-control. Some versions of the Bible read sound mind rather than self-control. Fear is the antithesis of power, love and sound mind or self-control. Fear is a timid, loveless, and turbulent mind. We have nothing to fear! Fear is part of a life without God. God loves us, He holds in His arms, Our Papa.
Romans 8:15 says,
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"
Do you remember when you were little; you knew if Daddy was there, all was right with the world. He told the monsters under the bed to get out. He held you when you were scared. And when he held you there was nothing in the entire universe that could hurt you. Your Abba, your Father in Heaven is holding you tightly in his arms. Nothing can take you out of His mighty hands. John 10:28-29 reads,
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.”
He will not let anyone hurt you. He will not let the enemy touch you! The enemy will taunt you, he will threaten, he will lies to you but he can’t touch you. You are safe in your Daddy’s arms!
1 John 5:18 says,
“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.”
What is fear keeping you from doing? What is it you are afraid of happening? Change? Death? Maiming? Is any of that a real fear? Are you imagining what will happen if things go wrong? That is worrying. That’s not reality. Where are those thoughts originating? Those are not from God! Remember God didn’t give you a Spirit of fear. Remember the enemy wants you to fear. The Bible tells us not to worry.
Philippians 4:4-7 reminds us,
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
He didn’t promise nothing bad things would not happen to us but He did promise to be with us regardless (Hebrews 13:5). He promised that everything works for good to those that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t spend your time imagining “what if”. If you fear something remember the enemy doesn’t want you to live a victorious life and he wants you to be afraid. That’s probably a good reason to overcome your fear and do whatever it is, the enemy doesn’t want you to do.
Before He went home, in John 14:27 Jesus said:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Don’t ignore that gift. I challenge you today; Do the thing you fear. Do it now. Let the enemy know he can’t touch you. Do what you are afraid to do and accomplish what it is you are afraid of doing. See what wonderful thing God has in store for you and for your world.

Psalm 72 Glorify Jesus the Righteous King

Psalm 72

This psalm of Solomon is a prayer to The Lord as Solomon became king in his father’s place. But his prayer holds more meaning than a simple prayer for himself. As believers we can take this prayer to encourage ourselves as well. And it is messianic prophecy as Solomon describes the ideal king, Jesus. Verses 1-7 describe the Righteous King.

“Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to the royal son!
2 May he judge your people with righteousness,
    and your poor with justice!
3 Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
    and the hills, in righteousness!
4 May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy,
    and crush the oppressor!

5 May they fear you while the sun endures,
and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!
6 May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth!
7 In his days may the righteous flourish,
and peace abound, till the moon be no more!”

True righteousness comes only from God. Jesus lived, died, and resurrected to give us His righteousness. The Holy Spirit works in us to make us more like Jesus and so more righteous every day. And The Father calls us to be holy as He is holy.

Jesus is the ultimate Judge and He is our justice. He makes us righteous so that we can be reconciled to God, know Him, and have a relationship with Him. Jesus cares deeply about the poor, the widows, the orphans, and the prisoners. He has compassion for all the needy. And He avenges us against the enemy who oppresses the people. We may not prosper financially or in any way that the world would notice but we prosper spiritually and we prosper in the Kingdom of God.

One day the children of God, the faithful followers of Jesus Christ will be forever with Him in the mansions of Mount Zion instead of the tents of this world. There will be no sun to light the day nor moon to light the night. The Glory of God, Jesus Himself will be our light. (Revelation 21:22-24).

We are royalty as well. We are righteous kings and queens in Jesus. He has given us His name in adoption. We walk with His authority and that means we walk with His love and mercy. If we are to be like the King of kings then we walk with compassion and justice for the oppressed, the poor, the needy, the widow, and the orphan. We love them as Jesus loves them. We want the lost to know peace with God. We want the tyrannized to know freedom. We want the persecuted to know justice. Jesus is our Peace, Freedom, and Justice.

Solomon wanted to be a good king. He wanted to rule well. We too want to be the best royal priests we can be. When the Lord asked Solomon what he desired most in order to be a righteous king, Solomon asked for wisdom. God granted him that as well as wealth, long life, and military victory. (1 Kings 3, 1 Kings 4:29-34). He gives us wisdom as well when we ask. He is happy to grant us the gifts that will make our walk that much more glorifying, loving, and effective. James 1:5 reads,

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

And 1 Corinthians 12:

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts.

And I will show you a still more excellent way.”

Love is that more excellent way. (1 Corinthians 13). We are to love as Jesus loves us. We do that by being the royal children of God that we are called to be. We manifest the traits of Jesus described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, love, patience, kindness, humility, justice, joy in righteousness, faith, and steadfastness, the fruit of the Spirit.

Jesus is Judge and King over all the earth. There is nothing He does not have sovereign authority over. Verses 8-11 read,

“May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the Rive] to the ends of the earth!
9 May desert tribes bow down before him,
and his enemies lick the dust!
10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands
    render him tribute;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba
    bring gifts!
11 May all kings fall down before him,
    all nations serve him!”

Every person on earth whether they acknowledge Jesus as Lord or not must submit to His rule. One day every knee will bow to Him. One day every person will acknowledge that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of all. Philippians 2:8-10 reads,

“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Even nature must obey Jesus. He created the world and the world concedes to His authority. Jesus spoke and storms stopped and seas calmed. (Mark 4:35-41).The Lord spoke and trees grew and trees died. (Jonah 4:5-11, Mark 11:12-25). He even gave us the authority to command nature as His royal and righteous ambassadors. Mark 11:22-25 reads,

“And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

We are not arrogant in our royalty. We like Jesus are humble. We don’t boast or take pride in great works, because they are not ours, they are Jesus’ works. We know that we are completely in need of God. We can’t even breathe without Him. We can’t have faith without Him. (Isaiah 42:5). The Lord has mercy on those who need it and ask for it. The Lord died for sinners, not for righteous men. A king has no kingdom if people do not submit to his authority. So we submit to Jesus, our Righteous King. He frees the prisoners, provides for the needy, and feeds the hungry. Verses 12-15 describe Him.

“For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.
13 He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
14 From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight.”

These verses describe Jesus. Do they describe us? They should. As His followers we should have His compassion, mercy, and longing for justice. We should act in Jesus’ love for people. His love wasn’t lip service it was action. He brought people to salvation. He healed, He spent time, He taught, and He served. He is our King, we should exemplify Him.

Do we long for His name to be known throughout the earth? Do we cry out “Long live the King!” Are we making disciples of every nation? Verses 15-19 read,

“Long may he live;
may gold of Sheba be given to him!
May prayer be made for him continually,
and blessings invoked for him all the day!
16 May there be abundance of grain in the land;
    on the tops of the mountains may it wave;
    may its fruit be like Lebanon;
and may people blossom in the cities
like the grass of the field!
17 May his name endure forever,
his fame continue as long as the sun!
May people be blessed in him,
    all nations call him blessed!

18 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    who alone does wondrous things.
19 Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory!
Amen and Amen!

Believer, you and I are the glory of God! You and I are the ones to make Jesus’ name famous. Our ancestors have passed away and passed the job onto us. David worshipped God. He brought light to Israel. When David died the torch was passed to Solomon. We carry that torch now. Let us light the world on fire for Jesus. Verse 20 says,

“The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended.”

David could no longer be the king. That job fell to Solomon. Now it is we who must take on the responsibility and glorify The Lord.

Psalm 26 The Lord is Our Vindication

6/16/2015

Psalm 26

What is vindication? What does it mean that God vindicates us? Merriam Webster defines Vindicate as to clear, as from an accusation, imputation, suspicion, or the like” It is to afford justification, to uphold justice be evidence or proof, to assert, maintain, or defend against opposition, regain possession or to assert one’s right to possession, and lastly to avenge.

God, our Lord does all that for us. He clears us of our wrongs. He justifies us and gives us evidence of our justification through The Holy Spirit. He claims us as His own and He avenges us against the enemy. This Psalm celebrates our vindication by God and our response to that exoneration. Verses 1-3 read,

“Vindicate me, O Lord,
for I have walked in my integrity,
and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
test my heart and my mind.
3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
and I walk in your faithfulness.”

We are not delivered because we are good. We are called good and able to be good because we are saved. When we accept Jesus, we are not only forgiven of every sin past, present, and future, but we are also given God’s Spirit, His nature and we are then able to follow Jesus and come to know our Awesome God. He opens His heart, His character, and His mind to us. We get to know Him and He makes us like Him.

It is through the proving, the testing of our heart and mind by the various difficulties and situations that God does His amazing and miraculous works in us to transform us. He knows our hearts and minds completely, the test and the proof is for us to know who we are. And we are able to “pass” those tests not by our power but because we know God loves us completely, and unwaveringly. We walk not by our faith but by His, which He gives us. Each testing and each proofing grows our faith more and more.

Verses 4-5 read,

“I do not sit with men of falsehood,
nor do I consort with hypocrites.
5 I hate the assembly of evildoers,
and I will not sit with the wicked.”

These verses do not mean that we never spend any time with the lost, it means we do not abide with or join with people of emptiness and vanity, whose words are lies and lead to false religions, idolatry, and selfishness. They are hypocrites, pretenders and we will not consort, partner or walk with them. It is picture, not of caring for them and loving them enough to share Jesus, but of being with them, on their side. We do not take part in their works. We walk with and partner with the Lord and with His church. Verses 6-8 say,

“I wash my hands in innocence
and go around your altar, O Lord,
7 proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,
and telling all your wondrous deeds.

8 O Lord, I love the habitation of your house
and the place where your glory dwells
.”

Washing one’s hands is symbolic of removing guilt and cutting off any association with something. In this case David and we wash our hands of who we were before salvation. We wash our hands of the false prophets and false teachers who lead people to Hell. We wash our hands of Satan. We are vindicated and we tell the whole world how marvelous our Father is, how Jesus died and rose to save us, and how beautiful the Spirit is.

And it is amazing to be with God in His house. In David’s day that meant the Temple. But today we are the Temple of God. He is with is and in us always. He abides in us. And it is truly lovely to be with Him. We magnify that wondrous thing when we are with the church, the body of Christ. Each of us glorifies or reflects and adulates the Lord and together that glory is exponentially increased. If you don’t know the joy of tangibly sharing God’s Spirit with one another, of feeling His presence thick amongst you, I am here to tell you it is pure joy and greatness. He is marvelous.

The Holy Spirit is our seal, our deposit, and our identity. We cannot be mistaken for the lost. We will not be condemned with them. Remember we are vindicated. Verses 9-10 read,

“Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,
nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
10 in whose hands are evil devices,
and whose right hands are full of bribes.”

The lost live for themselves lusting after selfish desires, seeking to fill the whole in their souls with pleasures and destruction. But we, the vindicated seek God’s will not our own. We walk in truth and honor as we manifest the Holy Spirit within us and live a life that testifies to the goodness and greatness of the Lord, Jesus our Deliverer, our Vindication. Verses 11-12 say,

“But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground;
in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.”

We are part of a unit, the body of Christ and together with them our foundation is firm. Jesus is our firm foundation, our rock. It is together with the family of God as we bear the fruit of the Spirit and love another that we uphold each other and corporately bless the Lord.

We are vindicated, no longer guilty as the enemy accuses us. We are holy. We are rescued and called God’s own.

Psalm 23 The Lord is My Shepherd. But What Does That Mean?

6/13/2015

Psalm 23

Most of us are familiar with this lovely Psalm. Its peaceful imagery and encouraging words soothe the soul. It is a picture of our relationship with God, the Son as He guides and pastors us. It is a picture of our relationship with God, the Father as He disciplines and protects us. And it is a picture of our relationship with God, the Spirit as He comforts and leads us. Verses 1-3 read,

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3     He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.”

Sheep have no concerns. They trust completely in their shepherd, who wants them to be healthy, fed, and safe. Jesus does that for us. We can wholly have faith in and rely on Him. We have no needs that He will not meet. We do not lack anything in Him. He takes us to a place of rest with plentiful provision. We can rest because He is watching out for us. We can rest because we do not have to earn redemption, He paid for it and gives it to us freely.

In His care and rest we are made whole. Our weary souls are restored to perfection. He guides us to walk and be like He is, righteous and holy. He does all this good for us so that we can glorify him, represent His name, and let the lost know He can shepherd them as well.

Verse 4 reads,

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.”

We walk as innocent strangers in a world of evil. But God is with us, leading us through it. Enemies surround us. The devil like a prowling lion waits to attack. The lost hate us for Christ’s sake. But we have no fears because God is with us. He protects us. He is all we need.

The shepherd’s rod is what he uses to protect himself and his sheep. It is his weapon against predators and it is his discipline for wayward sheep as he teaches them to follow him instead of straying. He also uses his rod to keep track of and count the sheep so that he will not lost a single one to its wanderings or hungry predators and so that he can know there were no sheep from a different flock among his own. Further as the sheep pass under his rod for counting, the shepherd uses the rod to examine them and make certain they are healthy and have no hidden wounds he needs to tend to. Ezekiel 20:37 mentions the rod in this way,

“I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.”

The staff is the tool that clearly identifies the shepherd as a shepherd. The tool is used solely by shepherds for sheep, and only sheep.  While the rod conveys authority, protection and discipline, the staff speaks of patient kindness. The shepherd uses the staff to keep the flock together as a unit. He will use the crook to gently lift a lamb and bring it to its mother. He uses it to bring the sheep to himself as well. And thirdly he uses the staff to guide the sheep into a new path, through a gate or along treacherous and difficult roads. He does so by gently laying the staff along the side of the sheep thus softly guides the sheep in the proper direction.

God’s discipline, protection, and guidance is certainly a comfort. We have no anxieties or worries in His care. And He cares deeply. He does more than simply provide the bare essentials. He lavishes us with blessings and gifts. He doesn’t hand us a scrap of bread and a cup of water. He lays out a meal to share with us. He chooses us and makes us holy, royal, and His heirs. We are not beggars at the door. We are not even honored guests. We are His bride and the meal he provides is a feast announcing it to everyone. We are His and no one may hurt us or touch us while we share His name and His table. Verses 5-6 read,

“You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.”

We will not lose the goodness and richness of God. The blessings he bestows are ours eternally. His mercy is ours forever. We will go through the world and share His mercy, His righteousness, and His love with the lost and with the saved. We are eternally God’s own beloved.

In John chapter 10 Jesus described Himself as our Good Shepherd and He made some promises to us in that description. These promises echo Psalm 23. John 10:1-5 reads,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

John 10:8-14 says,

“All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,”

And John 10:27-30 read,

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

Take comfort, Believer. You are not on your own. You can depend entirely and utterly on God. He is your Good Shepherd.

Leviticus 20 Be Holy Because You are Wholly God's Own

5/12/2015

Leviticus Chapter 20

The chapter begins with a warning about the worst kind of idolatry, a sin so heinous that it is the stuff of horror films. Sacrificing children, especially one’s own children is a sin that The Lord says is so serious, not only should the offender be stoned to death, but anyone who knows he killed his child and looked the other way or doesn’t agree with his stoning should be cut off from Israel. Verses 1-5 read,

“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Say to the people of Israel, Any one of the people of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. 3 I myself will set my face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given one of his children to Molech, to make my sanctuary unclean and to profane my holy name. 4 And if the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, 5 then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech.”

We are God’s chosen, His children. We are holy. He wants us to be like Him. We love Him with our heart, mind, soul, and strength and that means we reflect Him to the world. That means everything we are glorifies and exalts Him. God loves His children deeply. He would never sacrifice or surrender us. Today, most of the world doesn’t practice sacrificing animals or people, but there are people who abandon, sell, neglect, abuse, and even kill or otherwise forfeit their children to the world. Our Father would never do that to us, He wants us to be to our children as He is to us. John 10:27-29 reads,

The Son of God and Father God are one. Believers, we are one with God also. We have His Spirit, we are united with Him. Because He has adopted us as His children, we have His nature. God desires for us to be like Him, holy and distinct. To hurt our children is absolutely against God’s nature. Not only are we not to give up our children to the world, but we are to stand up for the children, the orphans who have been abandoned and the ones who are being sacrificed by the parents who are supposed to be raising them up for the greatness of The Lord. God doesn’t look the other way while we are being hurt and we can’t look the other way while any child is hurt, even if that child is 94 years old.

We are to be like God. He is holy. We seek our counsel from Him, not from the enemy. We trust He holds our future. We honor The Lord not our ancestors. We seek comfort from The Holy Spirit of God not spirits. Verses 6-7 read,

“If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.7 Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God.”

Jesus always honored His Father in Heaven. He always honored His earthly father and His mother. In our esteem and respect for our parents we glorify The Lord. We show the world a little bit about the nature of our God as we venerate Him by our relationships with people. Even simply saying something bad against our parents is considered hating them, it is tantamount to murder and the punishment is the same for such a serious act. Verses 8-9 read,

“Keep my statutes and do them; I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 9 For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him.”

God is pure. We His children are pure and we are to exalt our Father by our purity, righteousness, nobility and holiness. Verses 10-21 of the chapter ae dedicated to remaining sexually pure. Do not have sex with anyone other than your spouse. Never have sexual relations, even without that one act with anyone who is in any way related to you be it by blood or marriage. And never have sex with a person of your own gender.

Sex is a lovely beautiful gift from God. But people have polluted it and made it abhorrent. They think that uncontrolled lust is natural and while it is natural to the nature of Satan, children of The Lord God do not behave with the nature of the world but with the Nature of God. He is holy and so are His children. We can’t besmirch His name with repugnant acts of sexual immorality. When we do that, we defile ourselves. 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 says,

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

We are united with Christ with The Lord Himself! How can we sully Him by using our bodies, which belong to Him in every sense of the phrase by using ourselves in such depravity? We are able to exhibit self-control because God’s Spirit is in us. We are able to honor God with our entirety because we have His Spirit, His mind and His heart.

We are holy. We are distinct. We are not like the world. We are peculiar. We stand out. We are God’s own. Verse 26 states,

“You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.”

Ezekiel 18 Your Sins are on Your Head. Someone Has to Pay.

Ezekiel 18

In Israel during Ezekiel’s time there was a popular proverb, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.” (Verse 2). This meant that the fathers sinned and their children paid the price. One can see why this was a popular saying as it might discourage men from sinning since their children would be the ones to suffer and die for their sins. But it also offered a kind of hopelessness. Why bother trying to follow God’s ordinances, when one’s ancestors’ actions required penance?

The Lord didn’t like this saying. It propagated a harmful lie. God said, “Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die.” (Verse 4). He said, ‘If a person doesn’t sin, he will live but if he sins, he’ll die. It doesn’t matter what his father did, it matters what the man himself does.’

In Christianese society we have a ton of proverbs, sayings, and songs which we use to encourage one another, reassure the lost, and hearten the broken. We treat them like scripture. But they are not. Many of them promulgate lies. The truth sometimes hurts. These pretty little sugary nuggets of “wisdom” cheer the person who may finally have been at the point of admitting their need of Jesus. They turn the Christian from the difficult path to the easy one. They lead the believer to look for a way out of suffering rather than thank God for it and allow Him to transform him through it.

The proverb in Ezekiel 18 had people thinking their behavior didn’t matter and they could blame someone else for their choices. God said take responsibility for your own actions. In verses 5-9 the Lord describes righteous conduct.

“If a man is righteous and does what is just and right— 6 if he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor's wife or approach a woman in her time of menstrual impurity, 7 does not oppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his pledge, commits no robbery, gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, 8 does not lend at interest or take any profit, withholds his hand from injustice, executes true justice between man and man, 9 walks in my statutes, and keeps my rules by acting faithfully—he is righteous; he shall surely live, declares the Lord God.”

That is a long list but it boils down to a person who actively loves God first and foremost and treats his neighbor as he would want to be treated. Likewise God describes the evil man. He is described as the man who does not do the things listed above. And God says “he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.” (Verse 13).

God clarifies it by saying if the son sees the father being evil and chooses not to follow in his footsteps, the son will live. And God says, if the wicked man turns from his evil and does good, then his sin won’t be remembered and that man will live. Similarly if the man who practiced good changes and does practices injustice, his good will not be remembered and he’ll die. (Verses 21-24).

The Israelites didn’t like this idea. The lie of the proverb was deeply ingrained into them instead of the truth God gave them. Verses 19-20 read.

“Yet you say, ‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. 20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.”

They wanted to blame others for their bad behavior. They wanted to say, ‘Joe is trash because his dad is trash and we shouldn’t expect anything from him.’ They wanted to discount people based on their heritage. But God doesn’t want to discount anyone. Every person has the same opportunity to choose life in Jesus’ righteousness or life chasing false gods. Each person is responsible for their own choices.  A man is not damned by his father’s choices, he is damned or saved by his own choices. Everyone’s sins must be paid for. We choose to love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind by making Jesus our Lord, and living out His life by loving our neighbors. Or we choose to reject God and follow philosophies, false religions, and lies, or elevate ourselves to godship.

The Israelites cried foul! It’s not fair! But God answered them in verse 25 and said, “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?”

We do that. We call God’s ways unfair, especially if they do not agree with us or if His way ends badly for us. People cry, “A loving god wouldn’t send people to hell!” but God says, “How could I let evil go unpunished? How would that be justice?” God doesn’t want anyone to die, but His love and holiness demand that iniquity be requited. Verses 30-32 read,

“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”

The great news is this we can repent, we can turn from all the evil. Sin must be paid for but God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the price for us. All we have to do is believe and repent and let Jesus be the propitiation, the payment that placates the promise between the Lord God and ourselves.

You are responsible for your choices. It isn’t your parents. It isn’t the abuse, the suffering, the lack, or the excess. You made your choices. You and no one else must pay for them. And the only way to pay is with your life. But God loves you such, He made a way for you. Jesus came and He paid the price. He took responsibility for every wrong and gave you life. All you have to do is accept it.

Ezekiel 3:12-27 To Obey God or Obey Fear? The Price is on Your Head.

Ezekiel Chapter 3 Verses 12-27

After Ezekiel’s vision, he went in the Spirit and with the hand of The Lord upon him to the exiles at Tel-abib. He was bitter but he went. He sat among them overwhelmed for seven days. Ezekiel obeyed the Lord although he didn’t want to. The mission and the vision had been a lot to take in. And so he sat overwhelmed by the whole thing for a week. The Bible doesn’t say whether he prayed. I imagine he did. I would guess he took that time to process everything. He didn’t turn away from the job God had given him to speak to the Israelite exiles and tell them whatever God had for them.

After God allowed Ezekiel to sort out everything, He spoke to the prophet again. Verses 16-17 read,

“And at the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.”

God told Ezekiel whenever he heard a word from Him, he was to warn the people. He didn’t give him the option of picking and choosing which message to give and which to withhold. Every word from God’s mouth to us has weight and should be heard by whomever God has chosen to receive it. We sometimes may pick and choose. God gives us a word or tells us to do something and we decide if we feel brave enough, we consider whether we think the person will receive it well, and then we decide if we’ll obey Him. I personally have had many conversations with God after His command to me in which I’ve said, “I really don’t want to.” Thank God, He is so merciful and gracious. Most of the time He just nudges me again, tells me in His quiet voice again to do it. Most of the time, I do.

God isn’t giving us commands, telling us to go, speak, give, or stop for His entertainment. He is telling us for a reason. He chose us for a reason. And our response affects things. It affects the person we might help, and it affects us. Verses 18-21 say,

“If I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 19 But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul. 20 Again, if a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits injustice, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 But if you warn the righteous person not to sin, and he does not sin, he shall surely live, because he took warning, and you will have delivered your soul.”

God doesn’t give us a word of prophecy for a brother because He thinks it is cool. He gives it because our brother needs to hear it. He doesn’t tell us to go to someone because He has nothing better for us to do. He chooses us because we are the ones whom that someone needs to interact with, because He deemed us the most appropriate for the job.

Remember, their reaction or response is not your problem. They have free will, just like we do. But God wants them to hear His Word, know His Love, and see Him. If we refuse to obey, and they continue down the path of destruction, God is clear, their blood is on our hands. If we tell them then the responsibility of their response is with them and our hands are clean.

What is it that we are afraid of in telling someone God’s message? Are we really afraid of this person? Shouldn’t we much more fear the Lord God Almighty than any person? Do we love God enough to love His people the way He loves us? Do we love them enough to use our gifts and obey our Lord? If we can’t obey God out of love for Him and love for others, at least we should obey out of the fear of their damnation on our heads.

Oh, how I pray that none of us are that selfish! I pray that each of us really does obey the most important commandments of God’s commands as quoted by Jesus in Mark 12:29-31.

Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

These are active not passive commands. Loving God with all our heart or emotion, with all our soul or will, with all our mind or intelligence and discernment, and with all our strength or physical power. And just the same as a natural result of the first, we love our neighbor, the people not only in our inner circle but all those we come in contact with the way we want to be loved ourselves.

After God spoke to Ezekiel He told him to go to the valley and He would speak to him some more. So Ezekiel went and saw the glory of God just like He had seen before. He fell down at once, but the Spirit entered him and lifted him up again. Verses 24-27 read,

“But the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and he spoke with me and said to me, “Go, shut yourself within your house. 25 And you, O son of man, behold, cords will be placed upon you, and you shall be bound with them, so that you cannot go out among the people. 26 And I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute and unable to reprove them, for they are a rebellious house. 27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ He who will hear, let him hear; and he who will refuse to hear, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.”

It may seem pretty severe to keep a man bound and mute except when he is doing or speaking for God. But God often used the prophets and circumstances as clear illustrations for His people. He wanted Ezekiel to only speak His words, to only go where He told him to go, and to only do what He told him to do. Ezekiel could only do God’s work by God’s power. It was obvious to the people who heard him because unless God was speaking through him, Ezekiel couldn’t speak. Remember it is God’s power you display, His love, His will, and His words you speak.

It is a stark reminder for us, not to add to God’s words. We are to say and do what He says when He says it. How many of us have gotten a word from the Lord for a brother or sister and waited, added to it, or taken away from it? We muddy the message. That isn’t obedience. That is letting fear sully God’s pure and perfect word.

My Brothers and Sisters, I encourage you to listen to the Lord well and obey Him immediately. Let’s stop arguing with Him and just trust Him. Let’s love people wholeheartedly enough to be willing to give them the chance to respond and choose life. Let’s trust God and see what He will do.

James 5:1-12 Money Might Buy You Happiness, but it Can Also Buy You Hell.

James Chapter 5 Verses 1-12

Is money important to you? Chances are it is. One can’t survive in mainstream society without it. Do you think about it, make plans for it, and find ways to make more? If your pursuit of money is ahead of your pursuit of the Kingdom of God, you have a problem. If anything is in your heart and head before God, then you have a problem. It doesn’t have to be money, it could be lack of money, a career, a family, a lifestyle, music, a ministry, or any number of things. If you place them in front of God, they are your idol. Idolatry will send you and the people watching you down the path of destruction, toward hell.

Verses 1-3 read,

“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.”

Our earthly pursuits are temporary. They will corrode and one day be gone. Worse yet they can corrode our hearts. They make us forget the love of the Father, the truth of Christ, and the awesomeness of the Spirit. If we seek earthly glory, how can we also seek Christ’s glory? In Matthew chapter 6 Jesus taught people not to seek their own recognition by bringing attention to the charity and good works they did, by praying dramatically, or fasting ostensibly. In verses 19-21 of that chapter He said,

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Where is your heart? Is it in God’s glory or yours? Is it in a comfortable happy life or in loving others with the love of Jesus? Do you think whatever it is that is taking God’s place isn’t hurting anyone else? Are you sure? What did you do to gain and keep your money, your reputation, or your career? Did you lie? Did you steal? Did you slander someone else? Verses 4-5 describe some of those sins.

“Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.”

Believer, has someone done those things to you? What was your reaction? Did you trust the Lord enough to let Him handle it? Did you turn the other cheek because you know you cannot be separated from the love of God? Verse 6 illustrates the reaction we should have.

“You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.”

The righteous person, even wrongly persecuted, condemned and murdered, doesn’t resist the evil person. We aren’t here to fight the lost person. We are commanded to resist the devil and to draw near to God. We do not have to prove we are right. We do not have to hit back. We do not have to inflict pain. We can be humble, we can continue loving because we know who God is. We trust God. We have eternal life. Earlier in James letter, chapter 4 verses 6-8 he said,

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Does that mean we’ll suffer here? Yes. We will suffer for Christ’s sake. We will hurt or even agonize because rather than resist those who persecute us, we love them, pray for them, and bless them. But we aren’t alone. We have the Lord God Almighty. We have Jesus our Savior. We have the Spirit of the Living God. He has given us eternal life. We have the hope and promise of the Kingdom of God now and forever. That hope gives us patience, and steadfastness. Verses 7-11 read,

“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”

Our commitment, patience, and enduring are examples to others. The way we live is a witness to the power of God. Patience isn’t easy. If it were, it wouldn’t be a virtue. Grumbling and complaining against each other is not being patient or loving. It is trying to call attention to our own goodness rather than God’s. We don’t have to seek our own good reputation. We do not have to seek glory for ourselves. When we bear our suffering God gives us His reputation and we will be remembered for our faith and our steadfastness. But if we grumble and whine we will be remembered as being faithless.

We don’t have to be ostentatious about our persecution and suffering. There is no need for histrionics. At the end of the film Gone with the Wind when Scarlett says, “As God is my witness, as God is my witness they’re not going to lick me. I’m going to live through this and when it’s all over, I’ll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again.” Her melodrama removed any sympathy for her. When we speak and act with hyperbole and theatrics in ruins our witness. It brings attention from our awesome God back to us. Verse 12 says it like this,

“But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.”

Swearing and fussing gives people more ammunition to persecute us. God doesn’t want us giving people reasons to harass us. They don’t need more. They will regardless. Don’t give them reason. God doesn’t need us to swear an oath. The fact is we can’t know we will keep the vow. We are not God.

Consider today where your treasure is? What is most important to you? Is anyone or anything is in God’s throne but God? How do you handle the persecution of the world? How do you handle it when you need money, feel alone, are sick, or are being lied about? I encourage you to give it the Lord. Be humble. Be patient. Trust the King of kings.

1 John 3:1-10 You Are Either a Child of God or a Child of the Devil.

1/16/2015

1 John Chapter 3 Verses 1-10

Believer, you are a child of God! That is an awesome and wonderful thing. Verse 1 reads,

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

The world loves to talk about the brotherhood of man. They like to call us all God’s children and speak about all paths leading to the light. But we know that it isn’t true. The world isn’t talking about The One True Living God, The Holy One, Creator, I Am. They are talking about a god of their imagination, who in the end is actually Satan, the prince of the power of the air. And they don’t even know it.

They look at us, the genuine Children of God and they see us as liars and hypocrites because we reject the false brotherhood of man with our narrow-mindedness. They do not want to hear the truth that there is only one way to the Father and that is Christ. They can’t recognize the truth because they don’t know the Father. They live in the ignorance of lies, blinded to the truth by the father of lies.

What is it to be a child of God? It is a privilege! It shows God’s abundant vast steadfast and eternal love which is poured over us and into us. In order to adopt us as His children, God gave us the gift of His only begotten Son, Jesus. (John 3:16). That is love. It is faith in Jesus that allows us to be God’s children. Galatians 3:26 says,

“for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”

And we are not His children solely in name. Although, that is awesome enough. We are His children at our core. Sons share the nature of their father. He gave us His essence, His Spirit. And we have been made like Him. We have already been made like Him although we don’t see it completely manifested yet, one day we will. Verse 2 says it this way,

“Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

How marvelous is that? We are God’s children now and we are promised that one day our transformation will be complete. When Jesus returns we will be made perfect and complete like Him. We will see Him as He is. Our sin nature and even our physical bodies will be gone and we will be like God. Our transformation to be like Jesus will be whole. 1 Corinthians 15:50-52 describes that completion.

“I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.”

That is the promise we have. We are God’s children. As we follow Jesus, we become more like Him each day. We share God’s nature. We have His Spirit. We have eternal life, not just someday when the trumpet sounds, but now. His Spirit is in us, eternal life is in us. We long to be like Christ and His Spirit makes it so. Holding on to that promise makes us different. We want to resemble our Father! Verse 3 reads,

“And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”

God is Holy! In Him is no darkness and no sin. As His children we strive to be like Him. We don’t want to keep sinning and keep looking like who we were when we were children of disobedience and wrath. Ephesians 4:21-24 explains it like this.

“assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Children of God do not keep sinning living their old lives and looking like the world. We make a practice of obeying God, tangibly loving others, bringing people the gospel of Peace with God so they can be His children too, and striving each day to be more like Him. If you keep living your old life of sin, you are lying to yourself and living like your father, the devil. Verses 4-7 read,

“Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.”

God didn’t give up His only begotten Son so you could keep on sinning. He gave up His Son to destroy sin and make a way for you to experience an abundant relationship with Him. You cannot keep walking in darkness and sin if you have His essence, His heart, His nature, the Spirit of God inside you. Verses 8-9 say,

“Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.”

The world is deluded by the father of lies, they are children of disobedience. They want to believe in the story that their father has told them. All paths do not lead to light. There is only one way to God and that is Jesus Christ.

You are either a child of God through Christ or a child of the father of lies. You are either a child of the King of kings or a child of the prince of the power of the air. The proof is in the pudding. Verse 10 reads,

“By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
