Psalm 69 Suffering for Jesus is not Fun but it is Good

Psalm 69

Although Jesus promised us we would be hated for His sake, (Matthew 10:21-25) He didn’t say we wouldn’t feel the sting of that animosity. Suffering for Jesus is not called suffering because it’s enjoyable. David felt overwhelmed with the enmity and hostility of his enemies. Verses 1-5 read,

“Save me, O God!
    For the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
    where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
    and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying out;
    my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
    with waiting for my God.

4 More in number than the hairs of my head
    are those who hate me without cause;
mighty are those who would destroy me,
    those who attack me with lies.
What I did not steal
    must I now restore?
5 O God, you know my folly;
    the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.”

We know God is with us, yet sometimes at the height of suffering we can wonder if we will ever reach the end of it. We can wonder if The Lord will ever deliver and avenge us. If faith we easy or automatic everyone would have faith. The enemy lies to us and about us. The world of haters finds false reasons and flawed assumptions to hate us. But we know we do not need to hide our wrongs from The Lord and we couldn’t if we wanted to. It is futile to hide our shortcomings from the world. If they think we haven’t ever fallen as they do, then they wouldn’t see how God has saved us and how He can save them too.

That doesn’t give license to sin. We are citizens of Heaven, representatives of God, and ambassadors of the church. We live and walk in obedience to Christ. We don’t hide our sin, but we also live in a manner that honors our Father’s name and doesn’t shame our Brothers and Sisters. Verses 6-12 say,

“Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me,
    O Lord God of hosts;
let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
    O God of Israel.
7 For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
    that dishonor has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,
    an alien to my mother's sons.

9 For zeal for your house has consumed me,
    and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting,
    it became my reproach.
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,
    I became a byword to them.
12 I am the talk of those who sit in the gate,
    and the drunkards make songs about me.”

The deeper our passion for Jesus, our fervor for The Father, and our zest for The Spirit the more the world will despise us and be repulsed by us. They will call us fools, the will shake their heads and think we are ridiculous. Even our blood families will talk about us with derision. They see our behavior and it is peculiar. It makes no sense to them that we would submit to God, one another, or them. It makes no sense that instead of fighting back we would offer ourselves for more beatings. But we are meant to stand out from the world.

We are meant to look, act, and sound like Jesus. It isn’t always easy to be the butt of the joke but we know the Truth. We just can’t be like the world imprisoned to lies and ignorant of the chains and oppression they are under. For us, suffering is temporary. It is knowing that which allows us to make it through. For the believer, suffering for righteousness’ sake has purpose and that purpose is great. We can rejoice and continue to live as Jesus lived with love and virtue. We do not earn salvation through our uprightness, we are saved because we have faith in Jesus. Romans 5:1-6 says,

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

We know that suffering is necessary and good. We know that The Holy Spirit uses it to conform us to Christ’s image. And in Him we can tell the world about how wonderful He is, how He saved us and can save them too. Those awesome purposes mean that there are times when we may suffer longer than we would like. But faith reminds us that misery and affliction will end at the perfect time. Verses 13-18 read,

“But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
    At an acceptable time, O God,
    in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14 Deliver me
    from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
    and from the deep waters.
15 Let not the flood sweep over me,
    or the deep swallow me up,
    or the pit close its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
    according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17 Hide not your face from your servant;
    for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
    ransom me because of my enemies!”

The lost are headed toward the eternal pit. They are not aware of why they might suffer. But The Lord uses their suffering to bring them to a place where they realize they can only call out to Jesus to be saved. He uses us, our entire lives including our suffering and our response to suffering to demonstrate His saving power to the world.

When we suffer, we call out to The Lord, we don’t try to numb or relieve the pain by our own strength. We do not seek the answers or provisions of the world. We seek the Kingdom of God, His will, provision, strength, healing, and joy. When we seek God first, everything else falls into place and worry about our distress becomes foreign to us, the children of Almighty God. (Matthew 6:25-34).

We can’t look to the world for compassion, provision, or anything we should be receiving from The Lord. They hate us because they hate Jesus. They hated Him so completely and utterly that they wanted to murder Him in the most horrific and tortuous way a person could be killed. But they didn’t take Jesus’ life, He gave it. We like Jesus must be ready to do the same. We must be willing to suffer for Jesus’ sake which is the sake of the whole world. Verses 19-21 read,

“You know my reproach,
    and my shame and my dishonor;
    my foes are all known to you.
20 Reproaches have broken my heart,
    so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none,
    and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me poison for food,
    and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”

Verse 21 presages Jesus’ agony on the cross. He endured that torture for us. When He cried out that He was thirsty they gave him sour wine, vinegar instead of wine. First mixed with gall and myrrh to decrease his pain, but Jesus refused it. (Matthew 27:34). Then later he accepted sour wine without the gall to prolong his suffering. (Matthew 27:48). Neither was to slake his thirst. The world may offer us money, power, and revelry, but none of it is for our true benefit. Let them seek their profit from the world, eventually all their wealth, all their rich foods, and all their false power will be a stumbling block. They will either fall on their knees before Jesus or be thrown into the pits of Hell. We cannot be like them and therefore send them to Hell ourselves. Verses 22-28 describe it.

“Let their own table before them become a snare;
    and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.
23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
    and make their loins tremble continually.
24 Pour out your indignation upon them,
    and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their camp be a desolation;
    let no one dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute him whom you have struck down,
    and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
27 Add to them punishment upon punishment;
    may they have no acquittal from you.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
    let them not be enrolled among the righteous.”

The sinner will never be counted with the righteous. Only those made good and holy by Jesus’ blood will be in the Book of Life. Everyone starts out with the opportunity to be saved. God, our Father has chosen that all can be saved by Jesus. But many will not listen to the urgings of The Holy Spirit. Many will close their ears and harden their hearts against Him and so they will be blotted out of the Book of Life and instead die eternally.

For us who humble ourselves before The Lord, admit our sin, and let God be our God, He saves us. He keeps us and carries us through the suffering. He won’t save someone who won’t admit they need saving. He helps those who ask for His help and rescue. Verses 29-33 read,

“But I am afflicted and in pain;
    let your salvation, O God, set me on high!

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
    I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox
    or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32 When the humble see it they will be glad;
    you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33 For the Lord hears the needy
    and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.”

So Believer, do not be afraid to suffer. Do not be afraid to call out to The Lord for deliverance. Call out to Him and praise Him for His Salvation. Let the world know how great our Lord is. Let the church know how good The Lord is. Verses 34-36 read,

“Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion
    and build up the cities of Judah,
and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36     the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
    and those who love his name shall dwell in it.”

Psalm 22 You May Feel Alone, But God Will Never Forsake You.

Psalm 22

Psalm 22 is a Psalm with deep significance. It is read aloud each year at The Passover Seder. Every faithful Jewish person knows it, the way every student from my generation knows The Gettysburg Address, or the Pledge of Allegiance. It is the psalm that Jesus quoted as He hung dying on the cross when He gave His life for us. He only had to say that first sentence and every Jewish person in attendance who had just celebrated the Passover Seder remembered the Psalm and couldn’t help but see the prophetic words manifested.

Verses 1-2 read,

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
    and by night, but I find no rest.”

There are times when we feel as if God has left us, when we feel as if we are suffering with no end, crying out to God with no answer. But we know that isn’t true. Abandonment is a lie from the devil. God will never leave us.

Jesus knew God wouldn’t and couldn’t forsake Him. He is God. He took all our sins upon Himself and at that moment He represented the conflict between God and man. God doesn’t forsake us, we forsook Him until we accepted the gift of Salvation. God is Holy and He is good beyond what we can fathom. Man is separated from God by sin. Verses 3-5 read,

“Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.”

The Old Covenant called for a relationship based on laws. It was getting to know who God is by following the law. Israel could trust God because He gave the Law, He led them through the wilderness, He anointed them with the Law, and He delivered them to The Promised Land. The Jewish nation got to know God and could have faith in Him, because when they cried out He answered.

When we cry out to God, when we call on the name of Jesus, He redeems us. He removes our sin. We are no longer sentenced to death. We are destined for eternal life. Romans 8:1-4 says,

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Jesus, the Son of God came to earth and was like us. He experienced life like us, yet He remained sinless through it. He followed the law perfectly but refused to give in to the ritual rules and tradition that the Pharisees worshipped. Jesus completely empathized with us. The religious hated Him. The powerful despised Him.

David cried out about his enemies and haters taunting him. And when he did, He described what was happening to Jesus as He chose to give us His life for the New Covenant which would allow us to know God on a level more intimate than the Law could. Verses 6-8 read,

“But I am a worm and not a man,
    scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

Now read Matthew 27:41-43

“So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

Psalm 22:9-13 read,

“Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
    and from my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me;
    strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
    like a ravening and roaring lion.”

From before we were born God chose us. He has been sovereign over us, and He makes us His glory. (Romans 8:28-30). The devil, our enemy seeks to destroy us. (1 Peter 5:8-11). He wants to use suffering to hurt us, yet God uses it for our good.

Jesus suffered and His anguish was good for us. His torment on the cross, His death for us, is the crux of the New Covenant. We can suffer horribly. It will never be worse than what Jesus willingly suffered for us. Our suffering is often the consequences of our own poor choices, but Jesus was innocent. He agonized for us. We may feel alone through our tribulations, but we are not. Jesus understands. The Holy Spirit has sealed us for eternal life. Verses 14-18 read,

“I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
    it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs encompass me;
    a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet--
17 I can count all my bones--
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.”

I have felt like that, my heart melted and completely alone in the midst of people who want me devastated. I was not alone. David felt it. You’ve probably felt like that. And my God, Jesus Christ underwent it. Matthew 27:33-36 describes His torment.

“And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.”

God is our Salvation! Jesus our Messiah was pierced for our transgressions! (Isaiah 53:5). We need Him and He answers. He is with us. He never leaves. He understands. He cares. He saved us from Satan. He was hated, yet He loves us. We have been and are hated if we truly are the image of Christ. (Matthew 10:22). He saved us and we respond by glorifying Him, by praising Him, and by testifying to who He is. The devil despises us. God adores us.  Verses 19-24 read,

“But you, O Lord, do not be far off!
    O you my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dog!
21     Save me from the mouth of the lion!
You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!

22 I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.”

Jesus gives us eternal life. Life, not only on this earth, but forever on the New Earth. Salvation is for all of us, none have to be excluded, Jew or gentile, rich or poor. All we have to do is call on Jesus. Verses 25-31 read,

“From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.”

You are not forsaken. God has not and will not abandon you. You have not been rejected. Give your shame to God and let Him make you new. You can trust in Him. He understands. He cares. He loves. He is with you, now and always.

John 19:31-42 Jesus Lamb of God and King of Kings.

John Chapter 19 Verses 31-42

Jesus died on a Friday just hours before the Sabbath and the Jews were eager to have the men on the crosses buried before High Sabbath of the Passover began. One of the reasons they had been so keen to have Jesus crucified was because it added to their fervor of proving Him wrong. Being crucified or hung to a tree meant He was cursed by God. Deuteronomy 21:22-23 reads,

“And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.”

Since death by crucifixion took a very long time, the Jewish leaders asked Pilate to hurry it along by breaking the legs of the men on the crosses. With their legs broken they would not be able to lift themselves up to breath and would suffocate within minutes. Then they could be taken down and buried and the Jewish people could return to their homes and their holiday still ritually pure, untouched by the death of Jesus.

Verses 32-33 read,

“So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.”

Jesus had been cursed, He had become our curse as the perfect Passover lamb. And like the Passover lamb, He had to be without blemish, flawless, and no broken bones. Jesus died that way so that everyone, Jew and Gentile alike could be saved. The Jewish leaders tried to demean Jesus with the Law by making Him cursed and then further defiling Him by breaking His legs. But instead, they proved and highlighted the truth. He is Christ. Galatians 3:12-14 reads,

“But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.”

The fact that the men on either side of Jesus had their legs broken highlighted the fact that Jesus did not. Maybe some of those watching thought of the Passover lamb. Numbers 9:12 describe rules regarding the Passover lamb this way,

“They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.”

Maybe Psalm 34:20 came to mind and they realized it was a prophetic scripture just as Psalm 22 had been.

“He keeps all his bones;
    not one of them is broken.”

The Jews had tried to disgrace Jesus and in doing so had honored Him. They had tried to negate Jesus claims but had attested to the truth instead.

To ensure Jesus was actually dead and prove it to the crowd one the Roman soldiers, who undoubtedly didn’t know scripture pierced Jesus side. Verses 34-37 describe it.

“But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

The soldier’s actions fulfilled the scripture in Zechariah 12:10.

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”

When Jesus was pierced blood and water flowed from His side truly making Him the Passover Lamb whose blood covers with grace. His water purifies our hearts.

The Jewish leaders and the Roman soldiers opposed Jesus but their actions highlighted His identity of the Lamb of God, the perfect and ultimate propitiation for our sins. Jesus’ followers actions emphasized His identity as King. Verses 38-42 read,

“After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.”

Nicodemus who was a Pharisee was no longer concerned with what the Sanhedrin or the other Pharisees thought of Him, He had become a follower of Christ. He had previously gone to Jesus at night, secretly asking questions. Now, he no longer deemed his position with the Pharisees as more important than Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea had been a secret follower up to that point, but in giving Jesus honor at his death, when most of His followers had deserted Him, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea were outed as Jesus’ followers. They risked their own reputations. Jesus was more important to them, than their standings in the community. They gave Jesus high honor, tribute worthy of a king.

The amount of spices they brought was no doubt expensive. If the perfume Mary had anointed Jesus with was worth a year’s salary how much was seventy five pounds of myrrh and aloes worth? The extravagance of the spices spoke to Jesus’ royalty.

The garden tomb also was something usually given to royalty or the very wealthy. King David had been buried in a garden tomb, the kings Judah were buried in garden tombs. Jesus, the King of kings was buried in a garden tomb.

The Jews tried to disgrace, disprove, and discredit Jesus as Christ, but instead everything they did confirmed His identity and showed He is Messiah, the perfect Lamb of God. They wanted Him cursed and He became a curse for all, so that we could be saved. They tried to take His life, but gave it instead.

Have you accepted the gift of grace Jesus poured out for you on the cross? He loves you. He wants you to be, cleansed, forgiven, and saved. He wants to be your King. He wants you to be His joint heir. He wants to give you the Kingdom of Heaven. All you have to do is ask.

John 19:16-42 Jesus' Crucifixion

John Chapter 19 Verses 16-42

After His trial Jesus was delivered to be crucified. He bore His own cross to Golgotha, the place here He would be crucified and there in between two other men, He was lifted up. (Verses 16-18). It was customary to have the condemned man’s crime written on a sign and carried for all to see as an added deterrent to wrong doing. So Pilate had a sign written for Jesus and attached it to the cross Jesus carried. Verses 19-22 read,

“Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

The exchange between Pilate and the Jews showed what a childish pathetic man Pilate was. The weak governor could finally stand up to the council since he had given them what they wanted and they could no longer threaten his job. But in his insistence for his own way, every person who would witness the gruesome crucifixion would see, not what Jesus was accused of, but a declaration of who He is. They would bear witness to the crucifixion of the King of the Jews, the King of kings, their Messiah. Pilate, like Caiaphas while working for Satan, was used by God to bring about His will and His glory.

Even the hardened Roman soldiers, many who seemed a bit sadistic and who took a sick pleasure in the grisly events were used by God. Verses 23-24 say,

“When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things,”

It was Passover, and many of the Jews witnessing the crucifixion had already eaten their Seder. During the meal there are many scriptures which are read. One of those is Psalm 22. The first line of that Psalm is “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The gospels of Matthew and Mark both recorded Jesus cry from the cross. “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).  Immediately Jesus words would have brought the Psalm to mind. Right away they would recall phrases such as verse 14, “I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint;”
And verses 16-18,

“For dogs encompass me;
    a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and fee]--
17 I can count all my bones--
they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.”

Even on the cross, Jesus was telling them who He was and giving them a chance to believe in Him.

Jesus was giving away His life on the cross which has been recorded as an incredibly horrible and painful way to die. Yet He still cared about people. He looked at His loved ones among the crowd and saw His mother, His aunt, Mary Magdalene, another Mary, and John. He didn’t think of Himself, He thought of His mother. From the cross through His agony He told John to treat His mother Mary as his own mother and told Mary to look at John as a son. Even in through suffering Jesus glorified the Father and carried out His will that we care for widows and orphans and that we love one another. He formed the community and family of the church as is final act before dying.

Verses 28-29 read,

“After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.”

When the soldiers gave Jesus the sour wine they fulfilled the scripture of Psalm 69:21,

“They gave me poison for food,
    and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”

The soldiers didn’t know the scripture, they were enjoying their torture. They didn’t care who Jesus was to the people or themselves, but in their cruelty they continue to serve God’s will. They used a hyssop branch to give Jesus the wine. The same type of branch used to sprinkle sacrificial blood and cleanse and purify in sacramental rites as well as the branch that was used in the first Passover to put blood on the doors of the homes of the people who would be saved from death.

Now that Jesus earthly ministry was done, He could complete it. Verse 30 reads,

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Jesus declared His ministry and God’s plan finished. God’s plan of course continues but Jesus giving up His life as the perfect lamb was the core of it. Jesus gave up His life. No one took it. He bowed His head in submission to the Father and gave up His spirit, His life’s breath. He was an example for us to follow. We are too submit to the Father and give our lives to Jesus. He did after all pay a hefty price. Matthew 10:39-39 reads,

“And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says,

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Jesus willingly gave up His life so that you could know God and have salvation. Even through His crucifixion He told people He was Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. God made it clear that He was the Messiah. He called people to Him even at that terrible time. He used people who wanted to be used, like John. And He used people who thought they were working against Him like Pilate and the soldiers. He used them all for His glory and for your good.

Jesus paid for your salvation with His life. God loves you so much that He gave up His Son just for you. Pay attention to the call and give your life to the One who created you and paid for you.

John 18:19-John 19:16 The Truth on Trial

John Chapter 18 Verse 19 through John Chapter 19 Verse 16

Jesus was being questioned after his arrest. First by Annas, Caiaphas the high priest’s father-in-law as a representative of the Sanhedrin. Caiaphas had already decided that Jesus needed to die, he just had to find a way to bring it about. Annas asked questions and tried to get Jesus to incriminate Himself as a false prophet so they could give Him the death sentence they wanted so badly. Jesus answered Annas by saying, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.  Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” (Verses 20-21). What He got for His answer was a hit and a reprimand from an officer. But Jesus, didn’t take the bait or get defensive. He said, “I answered truthfully. Why would you hit me for that?” The Sanhedrin had no truth behind their accusations. They couldn’t prove their accusations. But they didn’t care. They were desperate to have Jesus killed. Their eagerness deafened them to the truth. They took Jesus to Caiaphas the high priest and then to Pilate, the governor.

Pilate was not Jewish, and it was Passover so the Sanhedrin wouldn’t defile themselves by entering his house. They followed their ritual laws to the letter while trying to find a way to kill the Son of God by using Roman laws. Pilate wasn’t thrilled about the situation. It was early morning and he had to go between Jesus who had been brought into his home for a trial to the Sanhedrin and a mob of angry Jews outside.

Inside, Pilate asked Jesus “Are you the king of the Jews?” Caiaphas had accused Jesus of claiming to be the Son of God, but to Pilate they used the term “King of the Jews” so that Pilate would have a reason to be try Jesus as a usurper of Roman rule. Jesus responded as He often did with a question to ask the person to examine themselves and find the truth. Verse 34 says, “Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me? To Pilate the words sounded like an accusation that he was just doing the Sanhedrin’s dirty work. Pilate didn’t appreciate it, even though he knew it was true. He did not want to execute Jesus. He could see no reason for it. Pilate wanted Jesus to tell him what his crime was. Verse 36 says,

“Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”

Jesus had just told Pilate an amazing truth. He told the governor that His kingdom was heavenly and that if He asked, His angel armies would stop all this right away. Pilate couldn’t understand what Jesus said. An otherworldly kingdom with servants who would have fought for him sounded looney. So this guy was guilty of claiming to be a king but still was that worthy of death? Verses 37-38 continue the exchange.

“Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

Pilate, of course was not aware that he spoke a truth, that Jesus is king. He merely asked this calm quiet man to clarify what He had said. Jesus’ answer gave Pilate a chance to accept the truth and receive salvation. But Pilate was not about the truth, he was about himself so he couldn’t hear it.

Pilate went outside to the Sanhedrin and the mob and told them He couldn’t find any guilt in Jesus. He offered them a chance to release Him by pardoning Jesus per a Passover custom. It was either going to be Jesus, accused of claiming to be a King or Barnabas, a robber. The people chose Barnabas. They were desperate to eliminate Jesus. They couldn’t see reason and they couldn’t hear truth.

Pilate might not have thought Jesus was guilty of anything that deserved death, but that didn’t stop him from punishing him. He had Jesus flogged and allowed the soldiers to ridicule Jesus however they chose. The soldiers made a crown out of thorns and pressed it onto Jesus head, derided him and beat Him.

Then Pilate brought Jesus out to the crowd again, wearing the crown and a purple robe. Maybe he hoped that they would see the blood and the disdainful crown and robe and find that punishment enough. But the bloodthirsty crowd was not satisfied. They yelled, “Crucify him!” Pilate didn’t want to crucify Jesus. He told the Sanhedrin to take Him and crucify Him themselves. Chapter 19 verse 7 reads,

“The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard that, he was afraid. He knew they were serious about having Jesus crucified. He saw that they would not be appeased by stoning Jesus to death themselves. Maybe part of Pilate sensed it was true. He knew Jesus was good. And the claim that Jesus was divine made sense with everything Jesus had said to him. Verses 8-11 read,

“When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

Pilate begged Jesus to give him a reason to release Him. Pilate reminded Jesus of who he was and the authority he had over Him. But Jesus said, ‘Nope, the authority you think you have is from above, from my Father and therefore me. I am the one giving my life, you are not taking it.’ Of course Pilate didn’t understand all that, but he did get the gist of it. Jesus claimed to be from above, from God. The Jews had said Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. He wanted nothing to do with crucifying Jesus.

He tried to get out of it by reasoning with the people but they used what was most important to him the world, his position and his power. They would report him to Caesar if he didn’t crucify Jesus. Pilate knew the Jews had no respect for Roman government, they hated it. They hated Caesar. He knew that it was a lie but he needed his position. And so Pilate chose power over truth. Verse 16 reads,

“So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.”

Jesus gave Annas, Caiaphas, and Pilate a chance to hear the truth and believe, but they chose not to hear it for different reasons. They chose blind rage and selfish ambition over truth.

Have you closed your eyes and ears to something God is telling you? He will still accomplish His purpose but if you accept the truth you can be on the side of victory rather than against Him.

John 17:1-5 Jesus Endured the Cross For You

John Chapter 17 Verses 1-5

Jesus loves you so much that He was able to face the horror of His arrest, trial, and death sentence with joy. He withstood terrible suffering and indignity with joy because He kept His eyes on the results. Because He was not about Himself about the Father.

Before Jesus’ arrest which He knew was imminent, Jesus prayed. John recorded the prayer for us. Verses 1-3 read,

“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

Jesus knew His death was looming and rather than focus on the pain it would bring Him, He focused on the purpose of it, the glory it would bring the Father, and the eternal life it would bring to us. He could stop it from happening at any moment. Although He was completely human, He was also God and the Father had given Him authority over life. He could display the immense power of His divinity at any time but His love for us and for the Father was too great to let Him do that. His desire for God’s will was higher and bigger than the angst of His trial and execution.

Jesus glorified or revealed the Father in everything He did in His life. Every word He spoke was from the Father, every act He did was because of the Father. (John 8:28). Jesus was now about to reveal the Father in the ultimate way. Jesus kept His eyes on God and God’s will instead of focusing on the suffering He would experience.

The Father’s will is driven by His love for you and me. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Because God loves us so deeply, He sent His only Son, a part of Himself to us. Jesus glorified God through His whole life and then suffered the cross so that we could have eternal life. And Jesus kept that in mind too. Jesus thought about us and the eternal life we would receive and it comforted Him. He loves you so much that He was willing to undergo a death that has been described as one of the most gruesome thinkable.

Jesus gave up His life willingly and bore that horrific shame because He wanted you and me to have eternal life. He could stomach it because He also knew that He would soon be returning to the Father, to the eternity He already knew. He kept His eyes off Himself and on the results. One of those results was Heaven. In verses 4-5 Jesus prayed,

“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

Jesus sacrificed the awesome splendor and brilliance of Heaven to step down and live as a man. But He knew what awaited Him. He lived His life glorifying the Father and soon the Father would glorify Him, lift Him up and bring Him back into the fullness of God again. Jesus didn’t suddenly appear at His conception or at His birth. Jesus has existed from the beginning. He was God and with God before the world. The world was made through Him. (John 1:1-5). He is the word of God, the will of God manifested and He was about to demonstrate God’s love and will in a great, terrible, and beautiful way.

I cannot imagine suffering more severe than what Jesus faced through His trial and crucifixion. He withstood it by choice and with joy because He knew that He would be in Heaven with the Father, because glorifying God was much more important than His comfort, and because He loves us enough to give us eternal life. Hebrews 12:1-3 reads,

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.”

Whatever you go through here for Jesus, you can endure it. You can take your eyes off yourself and focus them on Jesus. Jesus endured for you. He is in you, helping you through everything you are going through. You can remember that you are glorifying God. You can look around you at the lost who don’t know the love of God yet, and persist for them.

Jesus promised you would suffer if you follow Him. But He suffered first. He showed us how to endure it. Look to His example and persevere because He did it for you, because you want to glorify Him, because you love people as He loves, and because you know the hope that awaits you.

John 16:27-33 Peace through Jesus

John Chapter 16 Verses 27-33

Jesus was getting closer and closer to the time of His arrest and crucifixion and was teaching the disciples some of the more difficult lessons they would learn from Him. In verses 27-28 He told them,

“for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

Jesus told His friends clearly, He came from God and was leaving to return to the Father. They had believed Him and known it. They had declared it themselves, and they had heard Jesus say it in numerous ways. Jesus proclaimed He was the Messiah to them. He was nearly finished with His work on earth and would be going back to the Father soon. They had vacillated from time to time. Now they felt they had confirmation that fortified their belief once and for all.

The disciples responded in verses 29-30.

“His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.”

I think it is the mark of a true student and good teacher than the student can be transparent with the teacher and understand that his honesty will allow him to learn more. The disciples could admit that up until that moment they had waffled a little over Jesus’ identity. They knew He was the Christ but sometimes they doubted.  Jesus knew that. This wasn’t news to Him. God knows our hearts and there is no reason ever to hide any of it from Him.

Jesus knew their hearts better than they did. He didn’t chastise them and say, “Seriously, after all the miracles and everything you’ve experienced you still harbor some questions?” He answered, “Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.” (Verses 31-32). There is no scolding in His answer. He was showing them their hearts. They thought their belief was cemented and strong, but soon the events that unfolded would be so difficult that their certainty would crumble and their faith would wither to microscopic proportions. Whatever pride they held at that moment was burst, their attention was taken off of their own goodness and focused back to Jesus.

While Jesus told them they would scatter and abandon Him, He assured them He wouldn’t be alone, the Father was with Him. He gave them devastating news about themselves and He comforted them at the same time. “It’s okay, I understand, you’re human, but I don’t depend on you for strength and comfort, I depend on my Father.”

The disciples must have been shattered at His words. They really loved Jesus. But Jesus had more words for them and He knew that at the right time, the Spirit would remind them of what He said and comfort them. Verse 33 reads,

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus arrest was going to be bad, His mock trial horrible, and His crucifixion indescribably awful. All but John would desert Him. Imagine the way they felt cowering in their homes thinking they had disappointed their Lord. But Jesus had already forgiven them. He had already consoled them before they even did it. And He spoke words for them and for us that greatly encourage.

We do have trouble in the world. The struggles don’t stop because we become followers of Christ. In fact the conflict with the world becomes greater. Our very souls are in opposition to the world. But in Jesus and with Jesus we have peace. He comforts us throughout any difficulties. He has taken away our discord with God. We are at peace with God because Jesus overcame the world. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. He made the way for us to know Him, to commune with the Father, and to be filled with the Spirit of God. Jesus overcame the world so we could overcome the world.

What are you struggling through right now? Let the Spirit comfort you. Remember the peace Jesus made for you. Remember the Father is your Father too. His love covers you. Because Jesus overcame the world, so have you.

John 16:16-22 Jesus Makes Joy out of Pain

John Chapter 16 Verses 16-22

Jesus continued teaching the disciples before His arrest and crucifixion. Although it was He would go through an ersatz trial, beatings, and torturous execution, His words were for His friends so that when they went through the grief of it, they would remember and have comfort. Verse 16 reads,

“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”

The disciples didn’t know what Jesus meant. They asked one another and wanted to ask Him. I think by now they knew that Jesus said things the way He did for a reason and they trusted Him to clarify it in His way rather than interrupt Him and ask for explanations. And Jesus did, but not by saying, “Remember, I told you I was going to die and rise from the dead three days later.” They would remember that when the time was right. He instead talked about the anguish and heartache they would experience. Verses 20-22 reads,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

They were about to go through deep pain and they would react in that pain. Although of the eleven men there, only John stayed with his Lord throughout the trial and crucifixion, all of them wept bitter tears and felt the intense distress of losing Him. They cried from their homes or other places they hid. But Jesus said the world will rejoice.

I believe He meant it two ways. On one hand the immediate majority of people overcome by the mob mentality cheered and celebrated Jesus’ crucifixion. They didn’t think they had to deal with His rabble rousing trouble making ways anymore. But in the truest way, the world rejoiced because Jesus’ death and resurrection meant hope and salvation, it brought forgiveness and reconciliation with God. His sacrifice gave us life.

The disciples would most certainly hurt and grieve but that sorrow would absolutely turn into joy. The joy of Jesus death and resurrection is deeper, truer, and greater than any joy that exists. It is perfect and it is ours because of what Jesus did. Jesus used the analogy of childbirth to explain it. I’ve been told and I can imagine that the pain of childbirth is horrendous. But after the pain there is a new life, a child filled with potential and the love the mother has for that child turns her excruciating pain into exquisite joy.

When Jesus suffered and died on the cross, His pain was intense but He faced it with joy because He knew the purpose He served. The disciples’ misery was also intense, most of them had abandoned Jesus and they felt guilt, loss of hope, loss of a true friend, and loss of a leader. But then Jesus rose from the dead and their sorrow became joy. They knew then more clearly than ever before that Jesus was the Son of God, Messiah, and Savior. He forgave them for their desertion and betrayals. They were overjoyed. But then He ascended and gave them the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit came into them their joy was complete it was a joy that was in their very cores, they understood the beauty and mystery of the Gospel, they were able to reflect Christ, think like Him, and act like Him. And Jesus told them that joy could never be taken from them. It is was theirs forever, regardless of the suffering they experienced.

Isaiah 31:1-3 describes it like this,

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.”

And Psalm 30:11-12 says,

“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!”

The pain in life is still there. God makes good come out of it, He turns your mourning into dancing, and gives you reason to praise. That same joy is yours, Believer. No matter what you go through you have God with you. He is in you making it possible for you to go through it, learn through it, and become more like Jesus through it. He saved you and gave you the ability to pass that good testimony on to others and share His joy with a world that needs Him.

John 12:20-43 Jesus Died Publicly for You. Will You Live Publicly for Him?

12/14/2014

John Chapter 12 Verses 20-43

Not everyone in Jerusalem for the Passover was Jewish. Some Greeks had also come and wanted to see Jesus. And Jesus taught them. He spoke about His impending death which was on His mind. He had been teaching, and doing miracles for about three years telling people about the love of the Father. Now it was all coming to a close. But the end of His earthly ministry would be the beginning of The Last Days and the opportunity for every person to come to Salvation. Jesus taught the Greeks and the Jews that had found Him about the death He was about to face. Verses 23-26 read,

“And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”

Jesus spoke as He often did in a parable. And what He says is truly awesome news for us and for the Greeks. Jesus referred to His death as His glorification. It was truly the perfect reflection of God’s love for us. When Jesus died on the cross He revealed God absolutely and completely in His perfect love.

And then compared His death to that of a grain of wheat, though the grain dies alone the crop it produces is much bigger than the lone grain implied. And with each subsequent crop the harvest grows larger. And Jesus didn’t hold back. As soon as he described His own death, He alluded to us, His followers giving up our lives for Him as well. He said we would have to choose Him or the world. If we choose to give up our worldly lives, we will gain eternal life. But if we do choose to follow Him, we have to be willing to truly follow and do everything Jesus did up to and including giving up our lives.

But it comes with a promise. “If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” That is deep! It’s huge! The Father, Our God, Our Creator will honor us! He honors us through our union with Christ. He honors us by transforming us to Christ’s image. When we serve Christ, we become one with Him with the promise of God’s presence always with us. And so the Father honors us by giving us His Son and His Spirit.

Jesus continued teaching and He expressed His feelings about what was coming. So often people paint a picture of a stoic or even a detached Jesus. But Jesus was not apathetic or cold. He was passionate about The Father and passionate in His love for us. He fervently threw the money changers out of the temple. He compassionately healed the sick. He lovingly fed the hungry. He cried at the death of His friend. And He tenderly brought people to a place of repentance and belief. He did not face His fast approaching death without feeling. In verses 27-28 Jesus said,

““Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

Jesus knew how awful His death would be but He also knew that it was His purpose and so rather than forgo it, rather than ask the Father to save Him from crucifixion, He chose to glorify Him. It is not a sin to feel the angst and difficulty of the sacrifices made for God. It is in remembering their purpose that we can go through it. That is how Jesus managed it. He took His eyes off Himself and put them on the big picture of God’s purpose, which is God’s glory.  And the Father answered Jesus so that everyone could hear! “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” God was glorified in Jesus birth and life and He would be glorified in His death and resurrection. It wasn’t Jesus who needed the audible comfort. It was the listeners. Jesus continued teaching in verses 31-33.

“Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.”

When we read this, we understand that Jesus was talking about conquering Satan and bringing the offer of salvation to the whole world. But the crowd listening didn’t completely understand that. Many of them accepted that Jesus was the Christ, but they still thought He would have an earthly eternal kingship. They couldn’t reconcile what He was saying to their preconceptions of the Messiah. Jesus was saying He would be lifted up from the earth alluding to His crucifixion and His ascension and they thought He would be king and rule Israel forever on earth. So Jesus answered them in verses 35-36.

“So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

They had Jesus with them. They had the chance to believe right then and there. The choice was and is to believe in Jesus Christ and walk in the revelation of truth and love or to reject Him and be overcome with darkness, to be blinded to the truth. Jesus urged them to believe so that they could become sons of light, light themselves to reveal the truth to others.

So many people just couldn’t believe. They had Jesus, the perfect image of God right there in front of them. They had seen the great works He had done. They had heard the deep truths He had taught. They had seen the good He did. They had even heard the voice of God confirm Jesus Christ. But they didn’t believe.

But many people did believe. But too many of those who believed Jesus didn’t confess it. They were afraid to say it publicly because they didn’t want to be kicked out of the synagogue. They couldn’t even sacrifice their place in the synagogue for Jesus, they certainly weren’t willing to sacrifice their lives. Verse 43 describes them like this,

“for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.”

What is your response to Jesus? Do you believe? Do you confess to everyone that Jesus is Lord? Are you willing to give up your worldly life to follow Jesus? Do you seek honor and glory for and from God or the glory that comes from man?
