Psalm 87 You’re Suffering but You’re not alone

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4
Psalm 88
There are times that the suffering we experience feels as if it has been with us forever and will last forever. I think many of us could recount tales of woe to one another that might astonish the other. If we were to actually share our burdens with one another, we would realize we are not as alone in the depths of anguish. When we open our eyes and look past our own pain, we can see that there is no one among us who is not suffering. If we ignore the lie that we are alone and understand all of us suffer, then we can bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).
This Psalm it titled and subtitled,
I Cry Out Day and Night Before You
A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.
The psalmist was Heman the Ezrahite, one of the Sons of Korah. It is a psalm which expresses deep affliction and grief. Heman laid out his pain to God frankly and genuinely. There is no happy ending to the maskil, no unicorns or twinkly smiles. But there is still hope to be found in it. Verses 1-2 read,
O LORD, God of my salvation;
    I cry out day and night before you.
2 Let my prayer come before you;
    incline your ear to my cry!

The name the psalmist uses here for God is Yahweh or Jehovah, it is God’s ultimate name, His name for Himself, I Am. The name refers to His covenant relationship to us. Though Heman was in distress, he still had faith. We know he had faith because he was praying, because he wasn’t giving up, and because of how he addressed the Lord. Heman remembered God’s covenant with him and knew God remembered it with him. What is the promise the psalmist kept in mind? What is it that kept him going? The promise that keeps me going through the worst is found often in scripture, it is written in Deuteronomy 31:8.
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Jesus said it again when He was about to ascend to Heaven in Matthew 28:20
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age

So Heman could pray because he knew his prayers were being heard. Do you know your prayers are not bouncing off the ceiling, or falling on deaf ears? God hears you. He doesn’t ignore your sorrow. Heman prayed honestly. There is no reason to hide our feelings to God. We can be completely open with Him. Being honest with God allows Him to reveal the truth to us and walk in His will and His way by taking the steps He guides us toward in our conversations. If I’m busy pretending that I am okay with my situation, how will I hear my Lord comfort me? If I am lying to myself as I tell God that everything is honky dory, how will I hear His direction? Purge the lies from your prayers and be honest. There are no masks necessary between you and your Maker and Savior.
James 4:8 reads,
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded

Verses 3-7 show the psalmists candor.
For my soul is full of troubles,
    and my life draws near to Sheol.
4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
5 like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom you remember no more,
    for they are cut off from your hand.
6 You have put me in the depths of the pit,
    in the regions dark and deep.
7 Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with all your waves.  Selah

He says not only is he dying but the people around him treat him as if he is already dead. He confesses he has no strength and may as well be in his grave already.  Most shockingly, he accuses God of being the one who put him there. We know that God doesn’t want us in pain, but we also know that God does allow pain and suffering for various reasons. For the most part our suffering, illness, and pain is from Satan. Remember he is a creation of God and subject to Him. We can see this point illustrated in Paul’s description of the thorn in his flesh.
 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).
God allows Satan to send woes on us. What Satan means for evil and what people mean for harm, God uses for good (Genesis 50:20). Whatever Heman’s troubles were, they began in his youth and had remained with him (Verse 15). He had suffered for so long and he saw no end in sight, but he cried out to God day and night. He leaned on the Lord and though he had no strength, he could keep going. Verses 8-12 read,
You have caused my companions to shun me;
    you have made me a horror to them.
I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
9     my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O LORD;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you work wonders for the dead?
    Do the departed rise up to praise you?  Selah
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Are your wonders known in the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

The psalmist was deeply sad. He felt trapped in his pain and exhausted from sorrow. He was having trouble seeing anything except his grief. Yet, he still prayed, not only with his words but with his posture; he spread out his hands to God. Look how honest he was with God. He said, “Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed praise you?” He was saying if I’m dead, what good can you do through me? How can I praise you and tell anyone how great you are if I’m dead? Even as he cried out his anguish and frustration to God, he still declared God’s steadfast love, faithfulness, miracles, and righteousness. He said, ‘how can I tell the world about your steadfast love and faithfulness if I’m dead or considered an abomination? People can’t see your wonders or righteousness in my desolation.’
Heman was not afraid to be honest with God. I have no doubt that God answered Heman. I think that verses 10-12 show that God was included in the conversation. As Heman cried out, it was God who said, “Your suffering is showing my steadfast love, faithfulness, wonders, and righteousness. You are not an abomination to me. You are not dead. My grace is sufficient for you. You are not alone. I am with you to the end of the age.”

A few weeks ago, I was awake very early and spending time with my Lord in nature. I freely let it all go. I cried and cried to Him about my pain and illness. Parts of my prayer echoed this Psalm. I had suffered for so long and felt like I was very close to death. I asked God why He had not healed me. Just then a sparrow flew into my path. Immediately Luke 12:6-7 came to my mind,
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

My Father didn’t stop there, He then brought Matthew 6:26 to me.
 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Which led to Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
In that little sparrow, God spoke to me and said, “Don’t worry; just keep seeking me. I’m taking care of you. I will always be with you.” My cries turned to thanks. My fears turned to faith. If I had not been willing to be completely open, God would not have been able to allay my weakness with His strength.
Did my health get restored? No. I was still in pain, still weak and still sick. My world didn’t suddenly become a rose garden. My world remained as it was but my perspective changed. I haven’t stopped asking the Lord to heal me. I haven’t stopped suffering this terrible pain and frailty. Neither did Heman. Verses 13-18 read,
But I, O LORD, cry to you;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 O LORD, why do you cast my soul away?
    Why do you hide your face from me?
15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your dreadful assaults destroy me.
17 They surround me like a flood all day long;
    they close in on me together.
18 You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    my companions have become darkness.

This psalm doesn’t end with fat baby angels playing harps on fluffy clouds. It ends with Heman’s pain and loneliness. God doesn’t always take away the pain, He doesn’t always have those we’ve lost forgive us and restore failed relationships. But He does always remain with us. He does always take care of us when we seek Him and His will.
Believer, I know you’re suffering. I know you wonder if it will ever end. The Father will never leave you nor forsake you. Jesus is with you, always. The Holy Spirit is in you; His awesome power is at work in you. You have hope. You have eternity waiting for you. Jesus described our eternal home this way in Revelation 21:3-4,
Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age Matthew 28:20
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age Matthew 28:20

Psalm 74 Remember God is Our Almighty Salvation

Psalm 74

There are times it seems the enemy is winning. There are times it seems our hearts are trampled and it seems we cannot find the strength to fight or even stand. Israel suffered losses many times and this Maskil of Asaph describes one of those times. It describes how we have all felt from time to time when the enemy has attacked and our wounds feel like they may never heal. What do we do when we don’t have the power to stand up and fight? We call out to God. Verses 1-3 read,

“O God, why do you cast us off forever?
    Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?
2 Remember your congregation, which you have purchased of old,
    which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your heritage!
    Remember Mount Zion, where you have dwelt.
3 Direct your steps to the perpetual ruins;
    the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!”

We know that God will never leave us when we depend on Him for our salvation. Hebrews 13:5-6 reminds us,

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
    I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

But when we are in the midst of suffering it can seem like it will never end. I confess I have dealt with one issue for years now and it feels like it will go on forever. But I know it has a purpose for my own good and Jesus’ glory. I can say, God’s grace is sufficient for me. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 read,

“Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

We don’t have to be strong all the time. We don’t have to be able to stand on our own power. God taught Israel time and again that He was their strength and power and they needed to lean on Him as their only God, their Almighty Lord, and their Salvation. He used the enemies of Israel to discipline them, to punish them, and to bring them back to Him. He uses our enemy to turn us back to Him as well. Verses 4-8 describe what the enemy had done to Israel.

“Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place;
    they set up their own signs for signs.
5 They were like those who swing axes
    in a forest of trees.
6 And all its carved wood
    they broke down with hatchets and hammers.
7 They set your sanctuary on fire;
    they profaned the dwelling place of your name,
    bringing it down to the ground.
8 They said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”;
    they burned all the meeting places of God in the land.”

The enemy attacks for different reasons. One is that we are powerful soldiers for the Kingdom of God and dangerous to his princedom. He can’t have that and so he will try and hurt us to make us ineffectual. But when that happens rejoice and know God’s grace is sufficient for you. When that happens remember the Lord is glorified through your response, deliverance, and maturation. (Romans 5:3-5). The enemy will attack because the Lord allows it for our own strengthening and discipline. Like Satan tempted Jesus in the desert, we are tested and our faith made pure and Jesus will be glorified. (1 Peter 1:5-9). When we have suffered, we are able to bring comfort to people who are likewise suffering. Jesus suffered and we share in His suffering if we live for His glory. But not only do we share in Jesus’ suffering we share in His comfort. Jesus suffering brought us salvation. (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). Our suffering and subsequent response can lead people to Christ. That’s a reason to rejoice, y’all!

In the aftermath or in the center of the attack we look around for rescue or escape and it can be devastating. We may not see any hope. Verses 9-11 read,

“We do not see our signs;
    there is no longer any prophet,
    and there is none among us who knows how long.
10 How long, O God, is the foe to scoff?
    Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
    Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them!”

Israel looked for signs and for prophets, people who would tell them what God had to say. But they didn’t look to God. How many times has that been us? We suffer and we go to people for help we go to the pastor for encouragement, or we search for comfort from food, drink, or material things. But finally we resort to prayer, to our Lord for help. He is okay with us asking, “Why are you taking so long?” and He hopes we will listen to the answer.

Has the Lord done great things? Yes! What has He done for us over the years? Did He save you? Did He bring you through troubles over and over? It is good to remember what God has done, especially when you are under attack, suffering, and wondering, “How long Lord.”

I have a jars of rocks. Each stone has a word that represents answered prayer, even prayers I never articulated. As God does a great work or as He answers prayers I add a stone to the answered prayers jar. I occasionally go through those stones and remember what the Lord has done. Asaph too remembered what God had done for Israel. Verses 12-17 say,

“Yet God my King is from of old,
    working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You divided the sea by your might;
    you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
    you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
15 You split open springs and brooks;
    you dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;
    you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.
17 You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
    you have made summer and winter.”

Look at how great God is! He loves us so much! There is nothing God cannot do. He is Almighty Righteous Holy God. Sure sometimes it looks like the enemy is winning. Sometimes it feels like our pain will never end. But God is with us. And He is The LORD! Jesus suffered and He is The LORD. It is a joy to share in His suffering because it makes us more like Him and it brings Him glory.

God hasn’t forgotten us or the promises He made. It is us who sometimes forget His covenant with us, His eternal salvation and undying hope. God knows our hearts and minds better than we do. We do not pray for God’s benefit but for our own. When we articulate our heart, our hopes our fears, our joys, and our grief, it is so we will understand and The Holy Spirit, our Comforter, builds us up through those conversations with us. He reminds us who we are and who He is. And when we pray aloud all those around can be encouraged and edified by who God is. (1 Corinthians 14:13-19). And so Asaph prayed for God’s deliverance from the enemies of Israel. Verses 18-23 read,

“Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs,
    and a foolish people reviles your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts;
    do not forget the life of your poor forever.

20 Have regard for the covenant,
    for the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
21 Let not the downtrodden turn back in shame;
    let the poor and needy praise your name.

22 Arise, O God, defend your cause;
    remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
23 Do not forget the clamor of your foes,
    the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!”

In this prayer Asaph and Israel could remember God would deliver them and their enemies would be defeated. We too remember when we pray that God will rescue us, that He has saved us, and that although the enemy laughs now, he will one day be thrown into the pit of Hell.

So pray, don’t be afraid to pray with sincerity even if God may not like the words. He already knows how you feel but when you express it you can realize the awesome Love of God. Pray those fighting words, “Arise, O God, defend your cause;” and remember you are God’s cause, His glory is His cause, and the lost are His cause. The enemy has already been defeated, he just doesn’t know it yet, but we do.

Psalm 55 In Whom Do You Trust?

7/15/2015

Psalm 55

Who or what do you put your faith in? Do you put your faith into yourself, trusting your instincts ad emotions to lead you? Our feelings do not always guide us with wisdom. David had been betrayed by a friend. He was greatly wounded and in his distress he wrote this poem, a prayer to The Lord. Verses 1-8 read,

“Give ear to my prayer, O God,
    and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
2 Attend to me, and answer me;
    I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
3 because of the noise of the enemy,
    because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they drop trouble upon me,
    and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

4 My heart is in anguish within me;
    the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
5 Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and horror overwhelms me.
6 And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;
7 yes, I would wander far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
8 I would hurry to find a shelter
    from the raging wind and tempest.”

David’s emotions lied to him. He felt like God wasn’t hearing his prayers. He was suffering and afraid. Those feelings made him want to fly away from it all and seek refuge in a tent in the wilderness. He wanted to escape his suffering rather than go through it.

But we know that God will never leave us nor forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5). Although our emotions, our flesh leads us to cower and escape torment, troubles, and trials, God calls us to let him be our refuge. Romans 8:5-8 puts it this way,

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Our emotions (our flesh) do not always lead us properly, but the Spirit always does. The Spirit carries us through the difficulties we experience and conforms us to Jesus’ beautiful likeness through them. Romans 8:26-29 reads,

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

David was hurting over the betrayal of a friend. He put his trust in this friend and the friend helped those who sought to kill David. Putting our faith in people isn’t a great idea. People are fallible. We are not all-powerful, perfect, and holy like our Lord God. We fail. We fall short of the mark. Only God almighty is worthy of our faith. Jesus lived the only perfect life ever. We trust Him and when people let us down, as they undoubtedly will or when we let others down as we undoubtedly will, God is still with us strengthening, leading, and perfecting us.

David was deeply hurt by the person he had once called friend. He cried out to God to punish him. Verses 9-15 record his passionate plea.

“Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues;
    for I see violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
    on its walls,
and iniquity and trouble are within it;
11     ruin is in its midst;
oppression and fraud
    do not depart from its marketplace.

12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me--
    then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me--
    then I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a man, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend.
14 We used to take sweet counsel together;
    within God's house we walked in the throng.
15 Let death steal over them;
    let them go down to Sheol alive;
    for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.”

Have you ever felt so hurt that you like David asked God to kill someone? The deep emotions David felt prompted his injured soul to hate the betrayer. I know that I have experienced that sort of hate when someone hurt me. Those feelings are tantamount to murder. Seriously, we are not perfect. We all sin grievously. In Matthew 5:21-22 Jesus spoke about our anger and thought life this way,

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

David’s personal Judas deserved punishment, but so did David. Our enemies deserve punishment, but so do we. God is graceful and merciful. He loves us enough to give us Jesus. He loves us enough to count Jesus perfect love and life as our own just for the asking. He loves us enough to reform us as new creatures whose nature align with His own. When we depend on God, His love, mercy and grace become ours too and we can extend it to even the vilest of persons. We realize we were that despicable too. If God forgave us, shouldn’t we also forgive others? Verses 16-21 read,

“But I call to God,
    and the Lord will save me.
17 Evening and morning and at noon
    I utter my complaint and moan,
    and he hears my voice.
18 He redeems my soul in safety
    from the battle that I wage,
    for many are arrayed against me.
19 God will give ear and humble them,
    he who is enthroned from of old, Selah
because they do not change
    and do not fear God.

20 My companion stretched out his hand against his friends;
    he violated his covenant.
21 His speech was smooth as butter,
    yet war was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
    yet they were drawn swords.”

People will hurt us. People can lie, they can feign sincerity. We want to believe them. David wanted to believe his one-time friend. Hoping the best of someone is not a sin. Wanting people to be sincere is not wrong. But putting out faith in them instead of God is a sin. If we trust God, then when we are hurt by people we can extend His grace, mercy, and love to them too. It won’t mean we aren’t hurt, but it lessens that wound and brings healing to us and maybe even to the one who hurt us.

When you are hurt don’t lash out at the person who wronged you, call out to The Lord, give Him your pain and sorrow and let Him make it beautiful. Trust that those who wronged you will be dealt with by your Lord, your Father, your Savior, and your Peace. Verses 22-23 read,

“Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.

23 But you, O God, will cast them down
    into the pit of destruction;
men of blood and treachery
    shall not live out half their days.
But I will trust in you.”

Do you put your trust in your feelings? Do you allow circumstances to rule you? Do you put your faith in people including yourself? Put your faith and trust in God. He is able. He is worthy. He is God The LORD.

Psalm 32 Salvation is Through Forgiveness of Sin by Jesus’ Blood

6/22/2015

Psalm 32

This Psalm or maskil, a skillfully written contemplative poem celebrates salvation. Do you know how blessed, how privileged you are to be forgiven of your sins? Salvation is a real miracle. Because we are forgiven we get to have a relationship with The Lord, not just any relationship but an intimate one where we can really know one another, and where we are so united that nothing can come between us or divide us. Trying to separate us from the Love of God is like trying to take the cream out of the coffee after it has been poured in. Verses 1-2 read,

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit there is no deceit.”

Forgiveness, salvation is not an automatic. There are prerequisites to The Lord counting no iniquity against us. We can’t just say one day, “I am a Christian” and have it be true. Yet many people call themselves Christian who are not. What are the requirements to salvation? They are simple, Verse 1 tells us, “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” What is our sin covered with? What does that mean? The sin of the person who is called righteous by God is covered by Jesus’ blood. Even in the days before Jesus came though, a relationship with the Lord was forged through the forgiveness of sin and faith in Him. It has always been faith that saves us. But under the Old Covenant sin was covered by the blood of sacrifices and offerings. In the New Covenant, Jesus is the only sacrifice we require.

But what does it take to ask Jesus to be your Lord? Why do we call on Him to redeem us? Why doesn’t He just automatically save everyone? Verses 3-5 tell us,

“For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away
    through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah

5 I acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. “

God calls us all and the guilt of our wrongdoings are heavy on us. Not everyone responds to God’s call. We have to acknowledge our sin and confess it. We have to realize our need of a way to God. In the Old Covenant the way was the burnt offerings, the peace offerings and the sin offerings when the people couldn’t keep the Law. They had to go through those rituals knowing that the blood of those animals was on their heads because of their sin. Today we admit our sins and accept Jesus’ perfect sacrifice as payment for our sin. We have faith in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection to make the way for us to God. Without confession and repentance we are not saved. No one is perfect. All have sinned. (Romans 3:23). Even our pastors, even the most saintly of people have sinned and need Jesus. As difficult as it may be to admit to God that we have sinned and ask for forgiveness, it is not so hard when we know that we are not the only people who sin and when we know that there is no shame and no condemnation when we are delivered from who we were in sin to who we are as forgiven. Forgiveness takes away the punishment, the price we would have faced. The price of sin is death. (Romans 6:23). Jesus paid that price for you. He is the only one who could because He is the only one who never sinned. (2 Corinthians 5:21). He laid down His life for you. (1 John 3:16). He rose from the dead for you. (1 Corinthians 15:4). He ascended to Heaven to be your advocate, your door to a relationship with God, and to send the Holy Spirit to you. (Romans 8:34, Acts 1:8).

Have you asked the Lord to forgive you? Have you confessed to Him that you are a sinner and need Him? Have you been waffling on the edge wondering if you can or should call on Jesus? Today is the day. Now is the moment. You have no idea what will happen tomorrow, in five hours, or in five minutes. Verses 6-7 read,

“Therefore let everyone who is godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;
surely in the rush of great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
7 You are a hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from trouble;
    you surround me with shouts of deliverance.”

The godly are not the pious religious who claim to live perfect sinless lives. The godly are those who recognize their need for God and depend on Him for forgiveness and trust Him to keep them. The moment we pray and ask Him to forgive us and be our Lord and Master, we become godly and He makes us more godly, more like Him every day. Verses 8-9 read,

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.”

God doesn’t leave His sheep to the wolves. He teaches us, guides us, and develops us, not as if we are animals trained with pavlonian methods. He teaches us as sentient intelligent people. We spend time with Him and He opens up His heart and mind to us. We read His Word, the Bible. We pray and we listen. We become part of a body (a church) of believers and we teach each other.  We go through life depending on Him and through it all He transforms and conforms us to His image, godliness.

Salvation is a privilege and a miracle. It is awesome. We cannot keep quiet about how wonderful our Lord is. The lost suffer but nothing comes of it. The lost have no purpose and they go through life filled with grief or trying to suppress the futility of life. But we have purpose! Life is not empty to us because we see God working, we know why we are here. We are here to have a relationship with God and to bring others to a relationship with Him too. We celebrate Christ. We rejoice in the transformation of the Holy Spirit in us. We revel in the Father’s amazing love. Verses 10-11 close the Psalm.

“Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
    and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!”

    Donna Campbell

    As I read the Bible every day, I take what God teaches me, what He says, and write it out. I then share that with you. It gives me a deeper understanding of the Word and I hope that it will encourage you as it does me, to put your love and faith into action.
