Genesis 6 Noah’s Faith and Righteousness

Do not fear, only believe. Mark 6:36
Do not fear, only believe. Mark 6:36
Genesis 6
Since I am still on retreat and off the grid, this is another encore devotional.
In Genesis Chapter 6, God looked at the earth and regretted that He had made man. Man was evil. Verse 5 describes it this way,
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Verses 11-12 read,
Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
So the LORD came to a decision described in Verses 6-8.
And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah was described as a righteous man, blameless in his generation, a man who walked with God. So God chose Noah and his family to spare. He then gave him a commandment, a titanic order that had to test this man’s faith.
The LORD directed Noah to build an ark. He had very detailed specifications for the vessel, conservative estimates for the size of this ship put it at about 500 feet long, 83 feet wide and 50 feet high (These are my estimates with a cubit being about 20 inches long which is less than later used to build the temple). The ark would have 3 floors, a roof, and a door in the side. Then God told Noah why he was building this immense craft. Verses 17-19 read,
For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
God went on to tell Noah about the animals he would bring aboard to save, and the supplies he would bring.
Noah’s head must have been reeling. If you think back to Genesis Chapter 1, you will remember that the earth was watered by morning dew. As far as we know, this was still how God watered the earth. So a flood had to be completely foreign to Noah. So how did he react?
Verse 22 tells us,
Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
Man had become so evil, God couldn’t bear it any longer. They were so corrupt he was going to eradicate them from the face of the earth, except for one man and his family. The one man that walked with Him on the entire earth would be saved. The Lord gave him a job to build the ark. The job was colossal. The Bible doesn’t record Noah whining, complaining or questioning. The Bible records that Noah did it. That trust came not because Noah was righteous, but because Noah walked with God. Noah lived his life in a relationship with God. Because of that active faith, Noah could trust God and obey, even this very difficult, very unbelievable command. It was because Noah walked with God, that he was considered righteous.
Do you walk with God? Do you actively live your live with God by your side and at your helm? Is your “walk” more of a sit and watch? Do you observe passively and ignore the commands of Christ to love others and make disciples? Or maybe you do not have the righteousness of Christ. Whatever your answer, this is your opportunity to respond. You can trust God, obey His commands, become His friend, and walk with Him, or you can ignore the chance and choose death outside the ark of God’s covenant.

Deuteronomy 17:8-20 God is Your Judge and King; It’s Okay to Trust and Obey

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17
Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17
Deuteronomy 17:8-20
How many of us say that we trust God or proclaim we turn to Him yet when it comes down to it, we turn to ourselves, our friends or the media to tell us what to do in difficult situations? I think many of us may turn to ourselves much more than we turn to God. Or we ask Him for the answer and don’t like what we hear so we decide to listen to Dr. Phil or Dr. Oz instead.
In Ancient Israel, The Lord put priests in place to minister to Him, He gave the people judges to rule in a uniquely governmentless government. It was not anarchy but theocracy. He understood that people are people, flawed, prideful, and prone to sin. He knew we needed someone to help settle problems, hand out justice, and ensure righteousness. Verses 8-13 read,
“If any case arises requiring decision between one kind of homicide and another, one kind of legal right and another, or one kind of assault and another, any case within your towns that is too difficult for you, then you shall arise and go up to the place that the Lord your God will choose. 9 And you shall come to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall consult them, and they shall declare to you the decision. 10 Then you shall do according to what they declare to you from that place that the Lord will choose. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they direct you. 11 According to the instructions that they give you, and according to the decision which they pronounce to you, you shall do. You shall not turn aside from the verdict that they declare to you, either to the right hand or to the left. 12 The man who acts presumptuously by not obeying the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall purge the evil from Israel. 13 And all the people shall hear and fear and not act presumptuously again.”
The priests and judges (who were also prophets) interceded between Israel and God. When the people had an issue they first tried to handle it between themselves, then they took it to the judge over the town, if it was too difficult they were to go to Jerusalem to the judge in the presence of the priests. They would declare The Lord’s decision. Whatever it was He said, they were to obey it, completely. How many times have we gotten the answer to a prayer and left out the parts we don’t like?
Today we have The Holy Spirit. Turning to our Judge and High Priest is easier because He indwells us. He imparts His nature and His mind to us. We are the priests and the judges now. 1 Corinthians 2:12-16 reads,
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
We have the mind of Christ. That is not a reason to do whatever we choose, but a responsibility to live as the image of Christ. Sometimes, the answers or directives we get don’t make a lot of sense to us. I remember God telling me to go up to a woman and hand her a paper flower I had bought from a homeless man. He said, “Give that woman the flower and tell her I said she is beautiful, more beautiful than her mirror could tell her.” I obeyed even though it sounded crazy to me. I went to her, handed her the paper flower and told her that God said she was beautiful, much more beautiful than her mirror could ever tell her. She was awestruck, took the flower and quietly said thanks. I walked away and when I glanced back she was putting a compact into her purse and had a big smile on her face. I don’t know why the Lord wanted her to know that, it felt kind of foolish to say that to a stranger, but God had a purpose and it was accomplished, whatever it was.
There is a story in the Bible about Naaman a Syrian commander who had leprosy. He went to Elisha looking to be healed. Elisha sent a messenger who said, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” Naaman was indignant. He couldn’t believe that he was told to something so strange. He had hoped Elisha would come to him, make a big show of calling on the name of The Lord and heal him. Thankfully he had servants who cared about him and they encouraged him to follow the directions he was given. He did as he was told and he was healed (2 Kings 5:1-14).
Like Naaman, I wondered why The Lord gave him such explicit instructions when He could have healed him just by saying it. God wanted Naaman to understand that it was His power and not Naaman’s money or position which healed him. He wanted obedience which Naaman would not have learned if he had handed over all the money he brought and gotten a big show. Naaman’s healing was a gift, not anything he could purchase or earn.
How often do you ask God for direction and when He gives it to you, you don’t like it, so instead you keep asking friends, neighbors, accountability partners, anyone and everyone until someone gives you the direction you were hoping for.
Imagine the scenario: Let’s say your co-worker has just complained to your boss that she has to do all the hard work while you do nothing. You know what she said is a lie, missing a lot of information, but for some reason your boss believes her. Your job is threatened. You want to fight back, you want to tell your boss what a lousy worker she is, and you want to hurt her for hurting you. Hopefully, your first reaction is prayer and silence. In that silence the Lord prompts you to remember Jesus’ words, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.  And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” (Matthew 5:38-44).
Now if you do what I did in this situation, you will cry to every friend you know about the unfairness of the situation, you will want a truck to hit your co-worker, and you will cry to your boss that none of it is true. I can say, I never retaliated, I never complained about things I could have complained about. I never accused her of wrong and I did have wrong to accuse her of. But what I should have done was obey God completely. Either way, it meant losing my job. But I could have lost it with much less drama and hurt. I could have glorified Jesus but I didn’t. It took me a few years to stop thinking of this person as my enemy, to stop wishing her harm and to earnestly and genuinely pray for her. I didn’t listen to The Lord and do what He said. I don’t know if things would have been different. Maybe I would have kept my job or not. I definitely would not have nearly lost two of my best friends. I certainly would not have sunk to the depression I sunk to after that incident. But I didn’t like God’s answer, I sought my own.
God knows what is best and He knows who we are and how we will respond. He made Israel special and gave them judges instead of kings but even before they stepped foot in The Promised Land He knew they would eventually think their way was better than His and demand a king. He had already chosen Saul and David, and all the rest twelve generations before Saul was even born. God knows us. He wants what is best but made provision and rules for our rebellious natures. Verses 14-20 read,
“When you come to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you possess it and dwell in it and then say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’ 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother. 16 Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’ 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.
18 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them, 20 that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.”
The kings of Israel and Judah all fell short of who they were meant to be. Power warped Saul. David, a man after God’s own heart didn’t always follow God’s heart over his own passions. Solomon was debased by his lust and wealth. For some reason people need a ruler, a king, prime minister, or president to give them rules. We would rather have a corruptible man lead us than be led by God. God gave us what we wanted. And still we complain and refuse to obey.
But today even though we do have governmental leaders who we are commanded to respect, we are kings and queens in Christ (Revelation 1:6). And like God commanded for the kings of Israel we are to remember and meditate on the importance of that position. We must seek God and heavenly treasure not worldly treasure. We are to pursue God first and foremost never veering from His path.
It is in seeking God above all, including ourselves we are free to obey completely because we trust God’s love and sovereignty through everything.  When we lean on God obedience is so much easier. We can trust the Lord to do what is best for us. Isaiah 48:15-18 reads,
I, even I, have spoken and called him;
    I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way.
16 Draw near to me, hear this:
    from the beginning I have not spoken in secret,
    from the time it came to be I have been there.”
And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit.

17 Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the Lord your God,
    who teaches you to profit,
    who leads you in the way you should go.
18 Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments!
    Then your peace would have been like a river,
    and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;

Believer, you are a king and Jesus is your King of kings. You are a judge and Jesus is the Judge of the world. You are a priest with Jesus as your compassionate High Priest. You can obey because you know how loved you are, how provided for you are. This life is temporary. The Kingdom of God is eternal. Whatever difficulties you face here can conform you to the image of Christ with your submission.

Trust

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
Do I trust in the Lord wholeheartedly? Do I acknowledge Him in everything I do? I would love to answer yes, of course I do, but if I am being totally honest I would have to say no, not always. I find there are times when I find myself doubting when I should be trusting.
Why would I ever doubt God? He has always kept His word and has never let me down. So why not trust Him with my entire being? It's because I am human and the enemy knows this. Satan whispers lies in my ear and plays on my insecure. As mere mortals we are susceptible to his manipulation. He wants us to doubt God. How can we obey the Lord if we are doubting Him? As a believer and followers of Christ, I am to rise above the lies and listen to the truth which is God's Word.

James 4 What Do Ya Want?

James 4

What do you want more than anything else? Chances are, if you’re like me you can answer that question in a number of ways at different times. There have been times I could give you a list of items I wanted. As I’ve matured in Christ the list is not a list of things, it is a list of spiritual gifts, traits and sometimes things. Several times yesterday I had discussions with people about the ability to speak foreign languages. It is a gift I want very much. I also need a new chair, since my recliner is broken. And then there is the longing for a husband and child. None of these things is wrong to want. It is in how badly I want them, why I want them, and even the manner I might go about in getting them that may make them wrong.

I have at different times let my longing for a family take priority in my heart. I have been covetous of other people’s joy that they could fall in love, get married, and have children. And I have let the grief over not having love fill me. Maybe for you it is children, a better home, a certain lifestyle, or the latest tech gadget. None of those things is wrong, but they also show a discontentedness with Jesus. Those longings can move us away from our pursuit of the Kingdom of Heaven and divide us from our brothers and sisters in Christ. Verses 1-5 read,

“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?

God isn’t sitting up in Heaven keeping your desires from you and laughing about it. He wants you to have the desires of your heart. He loves to give His children good gifts. (Matthew 7:11). But they have to be good, good for us and good for others. Psalm 37:3-5 reads,

“Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.”

Trusting in The Lord, befriending faithfulness, and delighting yourself in the Lord present a picture of contentedness and faithfulness. This is not an image of a person who wants what she doesn’t have a person who wants her neighbor’s donkey and her sister’s car. It is a picture of a person who trusts God and is satisfied in Him, who longs to please Him and takes joy in Him.

Do you get how much your Father in Heaven loves you? His love is immense, it is bigger and better than our words can describe. It brings us to our knees in grateful worship and humility. We don’t deserve that kind of love but He loves us with a pure and unadulterated love. Even though our love toward Him is often selfish, sullied, and ungrateful. Even though sometimes we only give Him five seconds in the morning to say good morning and help me have a good day, His love for us doesn’t change. Our love is reactionary, His love is perfect huge, and steadfast. Ephesians 3:14-21 reads,

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family[c] in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

A Father that loves us so much wants the best for us. And the best is that we mature to the image of Christ, perfect loving, awesome Jesus. We cannot achieve that on our own. God guides us and shapes us. He gives us what we can’t get alone. He forgives our flaws and reshapes us. He teaches us to walk in Jesus’ footsteps. But He doesn’t force us. If we would rather pursue money, worldly love, or our neighbor’s lifestyle, He says “go for it, good luck with that.” All the while He waits for us to come to Him. He waits for us to realize no amount of caviar and champagne can ever be equal to life in Him. He knows who He has made us to be. He sees us as the image of Christ and who we can be is worth so much more than any worldly pursuit or possession. If having a husband and children will keep me from my full potential in Christ, then I do not want them. If having the ability to travel around the world will keep me from pursing the Kingdom of God, I do not want it. Verses 6-10

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

He does not make it hard for us to make Him first. He is so awesome. And when He is first, everything else falls into place. (Matthew 6:33).  Jesus said, the greatest commandment is “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Then He said, “And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:36-40). Loving your neighbor, treating him like you would like to be treated, making him just as important as you is like loving the Lord with your entire being. That is deep! The way we show our love for God, the way we testify to the world about our love for God is to love our neighbors, the people we share the planet with. Jesus clarified these two great commandments with a more simply stated but great and powerful command in John 15:12,

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

Loving one another and loving the people of the earth is a reflection of our love for God and our love for God is a mere shadow of His intense and bright love for us. When we let covetousness sully that love we squelch the Holy Spirit of God in us and instead of glorifying Christ, we glorify our flesh. We end up saying hurtful things about each other, highlighting faults in others, and breaking down rather than edifying the church. Verses 11-12 say,

“Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?”

Believers, we cannot let our yearnings come between us. Our mission is to make disciples for Christ. Our tool, weapon, and armor is Love. We walk in humility not hubris. We walk like Jesus filled with His Holy Spirit. In John chapter 15 when Jesus gave us the commandment to love another He also said more, He called us His friends. That is Jesus! Creator of the Universe, King of kings, and God who said that! John 15:12-17 reads,

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.”

We are united with the fellowship of brothers, we are united with God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We have the same goal. We have immense joy and we want for nothing. Don’t let longings for the temporary things of the earth come between us. Don’t let personal goals come before God’s goals. Don’t let personal planes take the place of god’s plans. Verses 13-17 read,

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

We are supposed to be glorifying Jesus, not ourselves. What do you want most in this world?

Psalm 56 Put Your Trust in God

Psalm 56

David went through trial after trial in his life. Over the years many people not only wished bad for him, they tried to capture and kill him. When we are friends with God, when we belong to Him and our hearts align with His, people will come up against us. They will try to hurt us in any way they can. Their prince, Satan wants us stifled. The accuser of the brethren doesn’t want us to use the power of God at our disposal. He prefers us to sit ignorant or terrified. But he can’t touch us spiritually. He can only hurt us physically through the lost who belong to him. (1 John 5:18-19). The more of God’s gifts, power and authority we exhibit and the more we resemble Christ, the more eager Satan is to suppress us.

When David wrote this Psalm called a Miktam, he had been captured by the Philistines at Gath. Verses 1-4 read,

“Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
2 my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
3 When I am afraid,
    I put my trust in you.
4 In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
    What can flesh do to me?”

When we are afraid because it seems no matter where we turn enemies surround us, like David we put our trust in God. We can trust Him. We can praise Him in the midst of troubles. We can thank Him for our deliverance. We can do all that because we know who God is. We know what He has done and what He has promised He will do. We know we can trust Him so thoroughly because God’s promises are so certain we can count them as already done. After all what can people do to us? They can’t separate us from God. They can’t steal our joy or rob us of salvation. Why should we be afraid of mere flesh and bone? Why should we be afraid of Satan and his weak attempts to stop us?

David’s enemies went after him with the intent to stop him permanently. They knew he was a powerful military leader. They knew he was gifted, smart, and clever. They could see God’s anointing and calling on him. It made them more determined to stopping him. Verses 5-7 tell us some of the evil people did to David.

“All day long they injure my cause;
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
6 They stir up strife, they lurk;
    they watch my steps,
    as they have waited for my life.
7 For their crime will they escape?
    In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!”

David had reason to fear for his life. In 1 Samuel 27:1 David’s fear is expressed. He kept this fear to himself. It was between David and The Lord.

“Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.”

The Lord answered David. He cared deeply about David and He cares deeply about us. He doesn’t enjoy the suffering we experience. He doesn’t abandon us while we suffer. Verses 8-11 say it like this,

“You have kept count of my tossings;
    put my tears in your bottle.
    Are they not in your book?
9 Then my enemies will turn back
    in the day when I call.
    This I know, that God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
    What can man do to me?”

God knows when we struggle and He doesn’t forget the difficulties we face. He knows we cry. He cares. We can know that the enemy will not win. The enemy will pay for his reign of terror over the earth, for his attempts to hurt us, and for his hatred of The Lord and His children. In verse 9 David said, “This I know, that God is for me.” Believer, God is for us too! And we know if that we know we have nothing to fear at all. In Romans 8:31-39 Paul says it this way,

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Paul quoted Psalm 44:22. It is for The Lord’s sake we are being hunted and killed. Satan wants to destroy us, not because of who we are but for who we are in Christ. But he can only accuse us. He can only tempt us. He cannot take our victory, he cannot take our salvation, and he cannot take us away from God.

We have already won. Satan was conquered when Jesus laid down His life on the cross. Satan’s hope, death and eternal separation from God was conquered when Jesus rose from the dead. Satan’s schemes were made futile when Jesus ascended and gave us The Holy Spirit.

David put his trust in God and thanked Him for his life and rescue even before it happened. Verses 12-13 read,

“I must perform my vows to you, O God;
    I will render thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.”

God did the same for us. We act out our vows to God. We vowed to make Jesus our Lord. God vowed to forgive us, make us righteous, and conform us to Jesus image. We actively and intentionally walk in that knowledge of God’s redemption of us, in our deliverance from death, sin, and Hell. Our part of the contract is that we make Jesus our Lord. God does all the rest. God keeps us walking, protects us from the enemy, destroys the enemy, and makes us new creations with His heart, His mind, His nature, and His Spirit.

What is it you have to fear? Nothing, because God your Father protects you. Zilch, because God, your Savior delivered you. Nada, because God, your Comfort indwells you. God loves you, He adores you. You can trust in Him and have nothing to fear.

Psalm 55 In Whom Do You Trust?

7/15/2015

Psalm 55

Who or what do you put your faith in? Do you put your faith into yourself, trusting your instincts ad emotions to lead you? Our feelings do not always guide us with wisdom. David had been betrayed by a friend. He was greatly wounded and in his distress he wrote this poem, a prayer to The Lord. Verses 1-8 read,

“Give ear to my prayer, O God,
    and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
2 Attend to me, and answer me;
    I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
3 because of the noise of the enemy,
    because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they drop trouble upon me,
    and in anger they bear a grudge against me.

4 My heart is in anguish within me;
    the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
5 Fear and trembling come upon me,
    and horror overwhelms me.
6 And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest;
7 yes, I would wander far away;
    I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah
8 I would hurry to find a shelter
    from the raging wind and tempest.”

David’s emotions lied to him. He felt like God wasn’t hearing his prayers. He was suffering and afraid. Those feelings made him want to fly away from it all and seek refuge in a tent in the wilderness. He wanted to escape his suffering rather than go through it.

But we know that God will never leave us nor forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5). Although our emotions, our flesh leads us to cower and escape torment, troubles, and trials, God calls us to let him be our refuge. Romans 8:5-8 puts it this way,

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Our emotions (our flesh) do not always lead us properly, but the Spirit always does. The Spirit carries us through the difficulties we experience and conforms us to Jesus’ beautiful likeness through them. Romans 8:26-29 reads,

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

David was hurting over the betrayal of a friend. He put his trust in this friend and the friend helped those who sought to kill David. Putting our faith in people isn’t a great idea. People are fallible. We are not all-powerful, perfect, and holy like our Lord God. We fail. We fall short of the mark. Only God almighty is worthy of our faith. Jesus lived the only perfect life ever. We trust Him and when people let us down, as they undoubtedly will or when we let others down as we undoubtedly will, God is still with us strengthening, leading, and perfecting us.

David was deeply hurt by the person he had once called friend. He cried out to God to punish him. Verses 9-15 record his passionate plea.

“Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues;
    for I see violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it
    on its walls,
and iniquity and trouble are within it;
11     ruin is in its midst;
oppression and fraud
    do not depart from its marketplace.

12 For it is not an enemy who taunts me--
    then I could bear it;
it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me--
    then I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a man, my equal,
    my companion, my familiar friend.
14 We used to take sweet counsel together;
    within God's house we walked in the throng.
15 Let death steal over them;
    let them go down to Sheol alive;
    for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.”

Have you ever felt so hurt that you like David asked God to kill someone? The deep emotions David felt prompted his injured soul to hate the betrayer. I know that I have experienced that sort of hate when someone hurt me. Those feelings are tantamount to murder. Seriously, we are not perfect. We all sin grievously. In Matthew 5:21-22 Jesus spoke about our anger and thought life this way,

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

David’s personal Judas deserved punishment, but so did David. Our enemies deserve punishment, but so do we. God is graceful and merciful. He loves us enough to give us Jesus. He loves us enough to count Jesus perfect love and life as our own just for the asking. He loves us enough to reform us as new creatures whose nature align with His own. When we depend on God, His love, mercy and grace become ours too and we can extend it to even the vilest of persons. We realize we were that despicable too. If God forgave us, shouldn’t we also forgive others? Verses 16-21 read,

“But I call to God,
    and the Lord will save me.
17 Evening and morning and at noon
    I utter my complaint and moan,
    and he hears my voice.
18 He redeems my soul in safety
    from the battle that I wage,
    for many are arrayed against me.
19 God will give ear and humble them,
    he who is enthroned from of old, Selah
because they do not change
    and do not fear God.

20 My companion stretched out his hand against his friends;
    he violated his covenant.
21 His speech was smooth as butter,
    yet war was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
    yet they were drawn swords.”

People will hurt us. People can lie, they can feign sincerity. We want to believe them. David wanted to believe his one-time friend. Hoping the best of someone is not a sin. Wanting people to be sincere is not wrong. But putting out faith in them instead of God is a sin. If we trust God, then when we are hurt by people we can extend His grace, mercy, and love to them too. It won’t mean we aren’t hurt, but it lessens that wound and brings healing to us and maybe even to the one who hurt us.

When you are hurt don’t lash out at the person who wronged you, call out to The Lord, give Him your pain and sorrow and let Him make it beautiful. Trust that those who wronged you will be dealt with by your Lord, your Father, your Savior, and your Peace. Verses 22-23 read,

“Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.

23 But you, O God, will cast them down
    into the pit of destruction;
men of blood and treachery
    shall not live out half their days.
But I will trust in you.”

Do you put your trust in your feelings? Do you allow circumstances to rule you? Do you put your faith in people including yourself? Put your faith and trust in God. He is able. He is worthy. He is God The LORD.

1 Peter 4 Following Christ in His Suffering

4/3/2015

1 Peter Chapter 4

Christ suffered on the cross and we as His followers also suffer. Christ’s suffering gave us salvation. Our suffering reveals Salvation in us. Verses 1-2 read,

“Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.”

We are not better than Jesus. We must expect to suffer. And when we do suffer for Christ’s sake, we can rejoice. We are emulating our Lord. We are being transformed to His image. We are glorifying God so that others will know His redemption.

Verses 12-17 read,

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.”

Suffering has more than one purpose. While we suffer, people see us. They watch and take note of how and why we go through our situation. How is that we can rejoice and even praise God through trials? They expect us to react in a worldly way and when we don’t, they see a glimpse of God. They see the grace of Jesus lived out.

Suffering conforms us to the image of Jesus Christ. Trials and tribulations teach us to exercise the fruit of the Spirit, the gifts He gave us, and purify us. . God sees us as righteous when He looks at us, but that doesn’t mean, He doesn’t care about our behavior. We are saved by grace but that doesn’t mean we should use our liberty as a reason to look and act like the rest of the world. We are supposed to emanate the Spirit of God, not the spirits of the world. We follow the King of kings, not the prince of this world. If the saved, God’s own children can’t behave in a manner worthy of God, how can we expect the lost to ever find Jesus? Verses 17-19 read,

“For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And

“If the righteous is scarcely saved,
    what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.”

We entrust our souls to the Lord. We give Him custody and authority over it. While we suffer, through good times, through joy, through sadness, and everything else we know God has charge over our souls and He will keep it for us until the Day we come into it at our completion. It will be worth more than it could have been if He hadn’t held it for us. It will be perfect.

Until that day, we are charged with doing good, with being Children of God in a world that doesn’t know Him. We are charged with doing good in a world that celebrates selfishness and debauchery. Even the fact that we don’t want to join them in decadence shocks them and gives them a reason to hate us or know us because of Jesus.

Verses 3-4 say it like this,

“For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;”

We have to remember that they are lost. The reason they badmouth us is because they follow Satan and don’t even know it. They will be judged one day. They need the chance to hear the Gospel. They need a chance to call Jesus their Lord. Our behavior in good times and bad gives them a chance to hear the Truth. Verses 5-6 say it this way,

“but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.”

Their self-indulgence may give them temporary pleasure, but Jesus gives eternal life. Keep in mind. Choose your conduct with love. Do you love them enough to abstain from sin, suffer with grace, and rejoice in the Lord? Do you love them enough to give them a chance to know Jesus?

Verses 7-11 encourage us,

“The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

Believer, you are special. You are not like the world. You are a child of the Living God, saved by Jesus and consecrated by the Holy Spirit. You are separate from the world, in it but not of it. Your life should be a witness to the truth, a living sacrifice to the Lord, and a light to salvation.

John 6:16-21 Are You Waiting for Jesus or Letting your Circumstances Lead You?

John Chapter 6 Verses 16-21

After the feeding of the five thousand Jesus had retreated to a mountain to be by Himself. When evening came the disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat and headed back to Capernaum. I’m not sure why the twelve left for Capernaum without Jesus. My guess is that they saw the weather and the tide and decided the circumstances meant they couldn’t wait for Him. They trusted that Jesus was a big boy who could take care of Himself. They knew He could catch a ride with a fisherman when He was ready. Verse 18-19 tell us what happened next.

“The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.”

There were some experienced fisherman aboard that boat. They knew how to handle it in the storm and they were doing their best. They had managed to row about three or four miles across.  If they had held hope that somehow Jesus was going to catch another boat and catch up to them, I’m sure they had lost that hope. It was physically impossible at this point. But then they saw Him just walking toward them on the rolling and rough water.

Imagine it. The stress of trying to keep the boat on course combined with feelings that perhaps they left to soon. The adrenaline from the situation and the sight of their rabbi walking towards them must have been terrifying. Had any of them been thinking, ‘I wish Jesus was here’ or ‘If Jesus were here He would make this better?’ Now suddenly there He was walking toward them. Was it a ghost, a hallucination, or worse?

Verse 20 says,

“But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

Jesus immediately comforted them. He was there. He told them not to be afraid. He didn’t have to do any more than that. If Jesus was there, then there was nothing to be afraid of.

Verse 21 reads,

“Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.”

They weren’t afraid anymore, they were glad to take Jesus into the boat from the rough water. Instantaneously the boat was at its destination. They didn’t have to row anymore. They had made it about halfway across the sea on their own power. I’m sure they were tired. Rowing in turbulent waters isn’t easy. But they didn’t have to struggle any longer. As soon as Jesus was with them and they had brought Him into the boat, they were at Capernaum.

How often do you struggle to do something yourself? Instead of waiting for Jesus, do you look at your circumstances and take matters into your own hands? The exertions you go through to meet your goal would have been so much easier or even non-existent had you depended on God. God can meet all your needs, He can take you where you are going, and He can lead you exactly the way He wants. His way is always better.

Had the disciples waited for Jesus instead of determining that they had to leave then, they would have gotten to Capernaum safely and without the labor of rowing so far across the tumultuous sea. If you had waited for Jesus, maybe He would have provided the electricity money instead of having you borrow it. If you had let God lead you, perhaps instead of fighting with your child to get her to rehab, God would have led her there.

Are you waiting for Jesus or are you figuring it out your own way?

Isaiah 51 God is your Comforter.

10/6/2014

Read Isaiah Chapter 51

When you go through hard times God says He is your Comforter and you can lean on Him. He comforts you in a few ways. He will remind you who He is by telling you to remember who came before you and what He did for them. Verses 1-3 read,

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness,
    you who seek the Lord:
look to the rock from which you were hewn,
    and to the quarry from which you were dug.
2 Look to Abraham your father
    and to Sarah who bore you;
for he was but one when I called him,
    that I might bless him and multiply him.
3 For the Lord comforts Zion;
    he comforts all her waste places
and makes her wilderness like Eden,
    her desert like the garden of the Lord;
joy and gladness will be found in her,
    thanksgiving and the voice of song.”

Remember God made Abraham from one person seeking Him into nations of people. Followers of Jesus are among those descendants. You are his children through faith. He was called righteous because of his faith and you are given that same privilege. And God wants you to remember what He has done for you personally as well. Verses 4-6 read,

“Give attention to me, my people,
    and give ear to me, my nation;
for a law will go out from me,
    and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
5 My righteousness draws near,
    my salvation has gone out,
    and my arms will judge the peoples;
the coastlands hope for me,
    and for my arm they wait.
6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
    and look at the earth beneath;
for the heavens vanish like smoke,
    the earth will wear out like a garment,
    and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;
but my salvation will be forever,
    and my righteousness will never be dismayed.”

Remember God sent His beloved Son Jesus to be righteousness and make a way of salvation for the whole earth. Jesus is the Law and Justice that God sent out. He is the Salvation. He judges the nations. He gives us His righteousness freely so that we can reconcile with God. He grows us. He nurtures us. He makes us new and fruitful. When Judgment comes, and the earth is no more, we who are His will be with Him in Zion for eternity.

God tells us we do not have to fear any man or any trouble or suffering that comes to us because of who He is. He wants us to remember He is God Almighty, the LORD. He has delivered His children in the past. He promises to deliver those who seek Him and His Righteousness. We have nothing to fear from mere men. Remember God delivered the Israelites out of Egypt with plague after plague. He cut Pharaoh down to size. He dried up the Red Sea to allow His children to walk through it unharmed, then drowned the entire army that tried to follow in that same sea. He created the Heavens and Earth. He made you and He made your oppressor. (Verses 9-11).

Remember your oppressor will die one day. But you are the child of The Living God. You will live with Him in Zion praising and singing. You don’t have to fear men when you remember who God is. God gave you Jesus. He saved you. He gives you the ability to come into His presence and hear straight from Him. He protects you. He provides for you.  He calls you His. (Verses 12-16).

Remember Jesus has justified you and you will no longer face God’s punishment. The men who distress you and pour their fury on you will face God’s judgment. God will take the power out of their hands and pour His wrath on them.  You have nothing to fear from them because you will not drink the wrath of God. You drink of His Spirit. (Verses 17-20).

You may face destruction, devastation, hunger, and even death. But when compared to the promise and hope of Christ, can any of that really hurt you? No one wants to suffer, but you are not in it alone when you have God’s Spirit within you. Let the suffering bring you closer to the Lord. Let it produce perseverance, faith, and righteousness in you. (Romans 3:3-5).

Remember who God is. Remember what He has done for His children who came before you. Remember what He has done for you. Remember the power of who He is. Listen to His words and follow Him. Remember what He will do to those who oppose Him.

Isaiah 45 God is enough

9/29/2014

Read Isaiah Chapter 45

The chapter talks about Cyrus. Cyrus was the king of Babylon, the country that had taken Israel into long captivity. But God had chosen Cyrus to be His instrument. Cyrus was going to be the king who delivered Israel to freedom and end their imprisonment. He was a Mede, not an Israelite. He was the king of Persia not of Israel. Yet it was this man who was chosen by The LORD to deliver Israel. It was this man whom God equipped and gifted to do redeem His people.

God is Almighty and sovereign. He can do anything. He often does things for us in ways we would never expect. He used the king of a nation who had kept His children captive for 70 years to be the rescuer. Verses 4-7 describe God choosing Cyrus.

“For the sake of my servant Jacob,
    and Israel my chosen,
I call you by your name,
    I name you, though you do not know me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other,
    besides me there is no God;
    I equip you, though you do not know me,
6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun
    and from the west, that there is none besides me;
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form light and create darkness,
    I make well-being and create calamity,
    I am the Lord, who does all these things.”

God’s plans are perfect. His ways are perfect. We do not make the plans and tell the Lord how to do it. (He knows we try) God says, “Trust Me” and then does what needs to be done in His way. God doesn’t give us a job to do and leave us to it alone. He calls us and gives us everything we need to get it done, and He goes ahead of us and does it.

When I go out on the street and share the gospel with someone. It isn’t me. It is God. He prepared me, He gave me gifts. He set the appointment for me to meet this person or that. He speaks through me. He softens the heart. He does the miracle. He saves. All I have to do is trust. And even if I didn’t God could use anyone even a person who doesn’t know Him. He is God. He doesn’t need a single person to do anything for Him, but He chooses to let us partner with Him. Verse 8 reads,

“Shower, O heavens, from above,
    and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
    let the earth cause them both to sprout;
    I the Lord have created it.”

It is a privilege to be used by the Lord. He allows you to serve Him. How wonderful it is to serve Him. How amazing to be a witness to His awesome goodness.

Do you question His ways sometimes? Do you question that you can do the job He gave you? Do you question that you are able? Maybe you think you’re too ugly, introverted, clumsy, or otherwise flawed to do God’s will. God made you, and He made you wonderfully. He is the one who created you and He is the one who chose you. Where is the logic in doubting Him then? Don’t tell God that what He has made isn’t good enough. Verse 9 reads,

“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
    a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
    or ‘Your work has no handles’?”

Don’t you get it? When you doubt you can do what God has appointed you to do, you doubt God. You are saying that the Lord who created the entire universe can’t accomplish what He said He would. He created the universe for a purpose. He created you for a purpose. He wants a relationship with you and He wants a relationship with the guy down the street. In your relationship with Him, as you adore Him and revel in His love, He will be glorified in you. He will show in you and people will come. Let God be God to you. Trust Him, Adore Him, Love Him and see what will happen.

Verses 18-19 read,

“For thus says the Lord,
who created the heavens
    (he is God!),
who formed the earth and made it
    (he established it;
he did not create it empty,
    he formed it to be inhabited!):
“I am the Lord, and there is no other.
19 I did not speak in secret,
    in a land of darkness;
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
    ‘Seek me in vain.’
I the Lord speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.”
