John 7:37-39 I Got a River of Life Flowin Out of Me

John Chapter 7 Verses 37-39

Today we have a continuation of Jesus at the Feast of Booths. The Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles occurred after the Days of Atonement and Yom Kippur. It was a really joyous celebration of God’s provision and fellowship. It was a weeklong party. The Feast of Booths is the most joyous of all the Jewish celebrations. There is so much a Christian can learn about Jesus by learning about this feast also called Sukkot or The Festival of Tabernacles. I encourage you to study about it.

Every morning of the feast the priests would draw water from the pool of Siloam, return to the temple, parade around it singing Psalms, and then the pour the water out as a sacrifice. It was not a quiet or solemn event. On the final day, the celebration was at a peak and the priests marched around the temple seven times before pouring out the water. It is at this point that Verse 37 picks up the narrative. Verses 37-39 read,

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

  • In John, water has been connected with Jesus in several ways. In chapter 2 Jesus had power over the water as He turned it into wine. In chapter 3 verse 5 Jesus told Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” In chapter 4 as Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman, He referred to Himself as the source of living water. In chapter 5 it was Jesus who healed the lame man instead of the healing waters of Bethesda. And in chapter 6 Jesus walked on the water. In chapter 7, He is not only the source of living water but He shares it with us.

In verse 37 Jesus offered the same invitation He gave the Samaritan woman, to drink from Him. His promise in this chapter is extended. He told the woman at the well that if she drank the living water, she would never thirst again. His promise in verse 38 says, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

First, it is for those who thirst. You have to know you have the need. If you have all you need and like the Pharisees didn’t think you needed Salvation, then you have no need of Jesus and the invitation does you no good. Second you have to believe. You have to know in your heart that Jesus is Christ and therefore Lord of your life.

Those who believe not only have the unending living water within them but it is an everlasting flow from them. The Spirit fills us and flows out of us, so that we, along with Jesus can offer the joy and truth of eternal life.

The Holy Spirit is not meant to be confined to us and allow us to live happy little private lives for Jesus. He is great, powerful, and jubilant. He makes it possible for us to share Jesus with the world and love them the way Jesus loved. Jesus didn’t love by passing out miniature Torah scrolls, or by writing a check once a year. He loved in tangible ways. He fed the hungry. He comforted the sad and tired. He healed the sick. He spoke truth and forgave sins. And He paid the price for our sins so that we could live. The Holy Spirit in us allows us to love people like that and share that life with everyone around us.

He is not meant to drip or trickle out of us. He is a flowing, running, and flooding stream without exhaustion.

Zechariah 14:8 reads,

“On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.”

That day is now. Jesus came. He lived perfectly. He died. And He lives. He ascended and the Spirit was given to us. The Spirit flows out from each of to give His life to anyone who thirsts and believes. Do rivers of living water flow out of you? Do streams trickle out of you? Do you feel empty? You are not. Jesus promised you would never thirst again if you drank from Him. If you believe, the living water is in there waiting to burst through the dam. Have you quenched the Spirit and built a wall that obstruct Him?

John 7:25-36 Jesus is the Truth. Are You Seeking Him or the Lies Created about Him?

John Chapter 7 Verses 25-36

Today’s reading is a continuation of yesterday’s study. Jesus was teaching at the temple in Jerusalem. His profound wisdom and words had amazed the people. But He had also upset them and caused a division among them about whether or not He was the Messiah. In today’s reading the people were discussing the question of Jesus’ Christhood.

Verses 25-27 in The Message read,

“That’s when some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the one they were out to kill? And here he is out in the open, saying whatever he pleases, and no one is stopping him. Could it be that the rulers know that he is, in fact, the Messiah? And yet we know where this man came from. The Messiah is going to come out of nowhere. Nobody is going to know where he comes from.”

This crowd has some things in common with people today, who decide they know what the Bible says rather than actually reading it for themselves. They use the “bible” to disprove anything that upsets them about Christianity. They assume they know, because they’ve heard it. They twist the scriptures and they take things out of context. They assume that action or lack of action of church leadership means that the church believes this or that.

That is what the crowd did. They assumed the Pharisees must have concluded that Jesus was indeed the Christ because they were allowing Him to speak publicly. The Pharisees, just like the rest of the people were divided in their opinion and in verse 30 of this chapter we see them decide to arrest Jesus.

It was and still is a common belief that the Christ would suddenly appear out of obscurity and that even he wouldn’t know He was the Christ. But Scripture doesn’t say that. The people were grasping at any argument to disqualify Jesus. In fact just a few verses later in verses 42 they reject Jesus as the Christ because they say, He was supposed to be from Bethlehem and everyone knew Jesus was from Galilee.

Have you missed Jesus as your Savior because you assumed things about Him instead of getting to know Him? Have you made decisions about who you think God is, rather than found out the truth of Him for yourself? Do you get your information about the Bible from teachers, pastors, devotionals, and blog authors or do you read the scriptures yourself? When is the last time you read the Bible? When is the last time you had a mutual conversation with God?

The people had the Messiah right there in front of them but their skewed perspective of scripture clouded them from the truth.

Verses 28-29 record Jesus response.

“So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”

Jesus said, “Yes, you know me and you know I’m from Galilee, but you don’t truly know me or where I’m from, because you don’t know Him who sent me.” If they understood that Jesus was here because the Father sent Him, that He was from the Father, then they would have recognized Him as God, Messiah, and Savior.

John 14:6-7 says,

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

You just can’t know God if you reject Jesus. They are one. To know Jesus is to know the Father and to know the Father is to know the Son. Jesus is God’s will made manifest. Every work of God was done through Christ. The Father wills it and the Son fulfills it. (John 1:1-4).

The Pharisees were trying to arrest Jesus, but they were not able to. It wasn’t time yet. Verse 31 reads,

“Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

The Pharisees and High Priests were getting really worried about the reaction of the crowd. Jesus was upsetting their neat little world by shining the light of truth into their web of lies and rituals. But Jesus told them a few things. Verses 33-34 reads,

“Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”

The really confused the crowd and the Pharisees. They thought He was talking about going on the lam or going to teach Jews who lived in the Gentile world. He said, “You will seek me and you will not find me.” They wouldn’t find Him because they wouldn’t be seeking the truth. They would be seeking their idea of who Jesus was, while they waited for their idea of who the Messiah was to arrive. They wouldn’t remove their preconceived ideas to see the truth. Christ was there with them, and they couldn’t come to Him because they couldn’t remove their pride and submit to Him.

Have you submitted to Christ or have you sought a God of your own making? God promised that if you seek Him, you will find Him. (Jeremiah 29:13 Deuteronomy 4:29). But you have to seek the truth, not your twisted version of who you want God to be. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6). Seek the truth instead of your personal opinion and Jesus will reveal Himself to you. He is the only way to the Father. It is solely through Jesus that you can have life.

Don’t cloud the water with your opinions and ideas. Don’t let your knowledge of the Word be obscured by receiving it indirectly.

John 7:10-24 Is it you or Jesus That is good?

John Chapter 7 Verses 10 -24

Jesus had gone to the Feast of Booths in Jerusalem privately rather than go with His Family. There were some people upset enough to want Him arrested and killed. There were some who thought He was leading people away from Judaism by His teachings, and others who thought He was a good man. But most of them were not vocal because they were afraid of the repercussions for themselves. Their private opinions and their murmurs and whispers didn’t help the situation. Those who thought Jesus was a good man, but didn’t believe or take any action on their belief may as well as agreed with the Pharisees seeking to kill Him. Those who thought He was leading the people astray but kept their complaints to mumbled criticisms were no more influential than those they argued with.

About the middle of the feast Jesus began teaching in the temple. The people listening to Him were amazed. They knew He had not studied but He spoke with knowledge, eloquence, and expertise.

Verses 16-18 read,

“So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.”

Some people look like really good people but they are not actually pursuing God’s glory. They work toward their own. The Pharisees were like that. They studied the scriptures. They gave exactly the right amount of money. They did everything right in the law except seek God’s will and love. The people were very impressed by their goodness. But their righteousness wasn’t leading anyone to God. They were leading people away from God’s love and His will and straight to Hell. Hosea 6:6 reads,

“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offering”

The people couldn’t even recognize God in Jesus. He was supposed to be the focus of their lives. He was right there in front of them, and they didn’t recognize Him. How many people who claim to be Christians have lost the object they are supposed to be following and instead glorify themselves with their goodness or begin following rules and ritual rather than Jesus?

Jesus continued in verse 19.

“Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”

I’m sure of the listeners were offended by His accusation they they didn’t follow the law. Here they were at the Feast of Booths in the temple. They gave money. They kept the Sabbath. They observed the feasts and special days. They were good Jews. But Jesus told them none of them kept the law. Deuteronomy 6:5 reads,

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

Leviticus 19:34 says,

“You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”

They were not keeping the law. No one likes to have their flaws pointed out to them, especially if they are quite proud of their perfection. The crowd got so upset they accused Jesus have having a demon and in an effort to put him on the defensive told him he was crazy for thinking people wanted to kill him. Jesus didn’t fall for the goad. He didn’t have to defend Himself or argue about things that would take the light of the Father’s will. Verses 21-24 read,

“Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Jesus had healed a man on the Sabbath. He had done an act of love as God desired. But He was being persecuted for it. The Jews were so careful about obeying the letter of the law that would circumcise on the Sabbath to ensure they didn’t break the law by circumcising a day late. Circumcision was an outward sign of a covenant with God. It was an act that required cutting and pain. What Jesus did was heal, take pain away, and give a man a chance to receive grace and forgiveness. The man’s heart would have been circumcised, it would have been in inward and complete sign of his covenant with God. Rather than change one thing about the man, Jesus had made his whole body well.

Which act is better? Is it better to heal a man and give him new life or circumcise a man? The Jews were judging through eyes of law, rules, and ritual. Their perspective was narrowed to the point that God was not no longer in it. They couldn’t follow God if they had left Him out of their view. Right judgment requires looking at the whole picture. Jesus was trying to open their eyes to the truth. They didn’t like what they were hearing and what it showed them about themselves.

Ask yourself some questions.

1.)    Who are you glorifying in your life?

Does your life shine the light on Jesus? Is Jesus being praised by your deeds? Are you getting the acclaim for the good things you do? Are there any signs of your relationship with Jesus to be acclaimed?

2.)    Are you following a list of rules and laws or are you following Jesus?

If you were running late on your way to church and you met a drunk, hurt, and lost man that needed help, would you stop, help him, and miss church?  Would you say a prayer that someone who has time would stop and help him? Would you be disgusted by his drunkenness and feel he deserves what he is getting? Would you even notice him as you rushed to church?

3.)    Are you loving God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, and your neighbor as yourself?

Is your lifestyle one of active and intentional love? Has Christianity become a checklist rather than a relationship?

4.)    Are you judging the situation, yourself and others with right judgment?

Is the love of God, His plan, and His sovereignty in the picture? Or are you basing your assessment on appearances? Do you assume the woman leading the church food drive is good and the goth teen who doesn’t go to church is evil?

John 7:1-9

John Chapter 7 Verses 1-9

Chapter 7 takes place during the Feast of Booths, a week-long Jewish celebration of thanksgiving for God’s provision. Just prior to the holiday, Jesus’ brothers urged Him to go to Judea and celebrate the feast properly. But Jesus was staying out of Jerusalem because the Jewish leaders and the Pharisees were bent on killing Him. It wasn’t time yet for Him to be killed. His brother’s tried getting Jesus to go by appealing to His vanity about His ministry. Verses 3-5 read,

“So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him.”

Jesus had no vanity and since He knew He was who He said He was He didn’t have to prove it to anyone. The brothers’ words echo Satan’s temptation of Jesus. But Jesus wasn’t here for earthly glory or worldly kingships. He was here to do God’s will and save us. Here was here to die. But it wasn’t time yet. He answered them in verses 6-9.

“Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.”

He didn’t offer up defenses and explanations. He told His brothers simply two things. First, it wasn’t yet His time and He contrasted that by saying His brothers’ time was always here. He was not here to fulfill His own will or do things in His own way. He was doing the will of the Father and therefore His time belonged to the Father. But His brothers belonged to the world and so their time belonged to them. Jesus knew the Pharisees were looking for Him and if He went with His family to celebrate the feast, He would be arrested and killed. He wasn’t going to let His brother’s goad Him into going. He would go when the Father told Him to go.

Secondly, Jesus told His brothers that although the world didn’t hate them, it did hate Him because He like the prophets revealed its evil. The world couldn’t hate Jesus’ brothers because they were part of the world. Just like the world, they didn’t want their evil revealed. Jesus was telling His brothers that He was from God and with God and they, like the world were not in agreement with God.

Are you here to do the will of the Father or are you here for your own fulfillment? Is your time yours or God’s? Going to the Feast was the right thing to do in Jewish custom. It looked wrong for Jesus to not go with His family and celebrate God’s provision. But the right thing to do was what God wanted, not what looked right.

Jesus didn’t worry about looking like He was righteous. He maintained righteousness by being in close communion with the Father, by knowing God, and doing His will.

Is it God’s will or your pastor’s will that you serve on three church committees and teach Sunday school on top of your other commitments? Is it God’s desire for you to run errands for people who are capable of taking care of their own business but too busy to do so, while you neglect your home and family? Is it God’s expectation that you are so busy doing what looks like good works that you can’t remember if you prayed today?

All that busyness may look like godliness to the world, but it isn’t. God knows your heart better than you do. Your motivation cannot be to please both your pastor, or family, or onlookers and God. You can’t say yes to God and yes to every request made of you by the world.

It looked like Jesus was choosing the wrong thing to His brothers. It just didn’t look good for Him to say no to going to the Festival with them. Jesus didn’t concern Himself with what looked right, He concerned Himself with what was right.

John 6:22-71 Do You Seek Jesus or His Blessings?

11/25/2014

John Chapter 6 Verses 22-71

Why do you seek Jesus? Do you want the many benefits of Christianity? Do you want gifts of healing and prophecy, a good name, all your needs met, good friends, and the guarantee of Heaven? Or do you want to know God on a deep level? Many people say they seek God, but they really seek gods, peace, happiness, and the advantages of spirituality and religion.

Jesus had fed five thousand men plus women and children with two fishes and five loaves of bread. He had multiplied those resources so that after everyone was filled to the brim, He collected twelve baskets of leftovers. The followers that shared that meal with Him recognized that He was from God.

The next day they looked for Jesus but He wasn’t there, neither were His twelve trusted men. They had seen the twelve leave without Jesus. But He was nowhere to be found. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to find Him. Verses 25-27 read,

“When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

He told them the truth about their motivations, “Y’all aren’t here ‘cause you believe I’m the Messiah or even because you realize I’m sent by the Father. Y’all are here ‘cause you ate bread ‘til you needed your Thanksgiving tunics.’ But then Jesus added, ‘Don’t go after earthly stuff like provisions, bread and the rest of this temporary stuff, pursue the stuff that lasts forever, pursue only what I can give you. Only I have been given the authority and power to carry out my Father’s will.”

But they didn’t understand, they heard Jesus offering them more bread, magical bread. And they wanted it, so they asked what they had to do. Verse 29 reads,

“Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Okay! It is that easy! Just believe. Cool! They had plenty of reason to believe. They had heard Jesus speak so profoundly that He shook the core of Judaism, they had seen Jesus heal the sick, and they themselves had just eaten bread multiplied miraculously. So did they say, “Thank you, you are the Christ, we believe?” Nope, they said, “Show us a sign, make us believe.” They wanted more of the good stuff. They wanted miracles, not salvation. They wanted bread, healing, and a new government, not Jesus Christ. They even suggested a miracle, they said, “Our ancestors ate manna, God gave them bread from Heaven.”

Verses 32-33 read,

“Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jesus was telling them, it isn’t miracles or magic bread that they needed, it was Him, it was God they should be seeking. God provided manna to sustain the lives of the Israelites, God provided His Son to give true and eternal life. Jesus, the Word of God, the will of God manifested, the Son of God, the exact image of God is all we need seek. Everything else will fall into place. But these people didn’t really want the will of God, they wanted magic bread and earthly provision. They answered Jesus by asking for the bread He described.

Jesus knew it was time to get a little harder. He knew it was time to make them face the truth of their intentions so He gave them some difficult words. Verses 35-40 read,

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Well, the Jews didn’t like that Jesus claimed to come from Heaven and He was promising to raise people from the dead but Jesus got even tougher. He continued in verses 53-58.

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”

A lot of the people who had been following Jesus, watching the spectacle, and enjoying the miracles were really freaked out by that teaching. Was He telling them they had to eat his flesh and drink His blood? Most of them said, ‘no thanks’ at that point. Jesus was saying some heavy stuff. He continued to reveal their true reasons and rationales to them, He gave them a ‘what if’ scenario that was actually prophecy about what would be. He said, “Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?” (Verse 62). “What if you saw me rise up and go back to Heaven? Would you believe me then?” We know reading after the fact that He did indeed ascend to Heaven and even that wasn’t good enough for some people to believe.

It is the Spirit that allows people to understand and believe, it is the Father who permits people to believe, and it is Jesus who carried out the will of the Father to make it possible. Jesus put it this way in verses 63 and 65,

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life… “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

The words Jesus spoke were not just words, His words and actions were God’s Spirit and God’s will.

Jesus had weeded out the true followers, those who wanted to know God more deeply from those who wanted the good stuff that came with knowing God. Many left. So Jesus turned to the twelve and offered them the chance to leave too. But Peter answered in verses 68-69.

“Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

Verses 70-71 read,

“Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him.”

Jesus chose you as well. He gave you the chance to seek God. He gave you the chance to enjoy God completely on a profound level that the lost can’t perceive. But it is up to you to believe. The Father granted you the faith and the choice. The Spirit grants you the revelation. The Son grants you the way. You can either believe and seek God with your whole heart or you can keep waiting for God to prove Himself to you and seek His blessings instead of Him.

John 6:16-21 Are You Waiting for Jesus or Letting your Circumstances Lead You?

John Chapter 6 Verses 16-21

After the feeding of the five thousand Jesus had retreated to a mountain to be by Himself. When evening came the disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat and headed back to Capernaum. I’m not sure why the twelve left for Capernaum without Jesus. My guess is that they saw the weather and the tide and decided the circumstances meant they couldn’t wait for Him. They trusted that Jesus was a big boy who could take care of Himself. They knew He could catch a ride with a fisherman when He was ready. Verse 18-19 tell us what happened next.

“The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.”

There were some experienced fisherman aboard that boat. They knew how to handle it in the storm and they were doing their best. They had managed to row about three or four miles across.  If they had held hope that somehow Jesus was going to catch another boat and catch up to them, I’m sure they had lost that hope. It was physically impossible at this point. But then they saw Him just walking toward them on the rolling and rough water.

Imagine it. The stress of trying to keep the boat on course combined with feelings that perhaps they left to soon. The adrenaline from the situation and the sight of their rabbi walking towards them must have been terrifying. Had any of them been thinking, ‘I wish Jesus was here’ or ‘If Jesus were here He would make this better?’ Now suddenly there He was walking toward them. Was it a ghost, a hallucination, or worse?

Verse 20 says,

“But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

Jesus immediately comforted them. He was there. He told them not to be afraid. He didn’t have to do any more than that. If Jesus was there, then there was nothing to be afraid of.

Verse 21 reads,

“Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.”

They weren’t afraid anymore, they were glad to take Jesus into the boat from the rough water. Instantaneously the boat was at its destination. They didn’t have to row anymore. They had made it about halfway across the sea on their own power. I’m sure they were tired. Rowing in turbulent waters isn’t easy. But they didn’t have to struggle any longer. As soon as Jesus was with them and they had brought Him into the boat, they were at Capernaum.

How often do you struggle to do something yourself? Instead of waiting for Jesus, do you look at your circumstances and take matters into your own hands? The exertions you go through to meet your goal would have been so much easier or even non-existent had you depended on God. God can meet all your needs, He can take you where you are going, and He can lead you exactly the way He wants. His way is always better.

Had the disciples waited for Jesus instead of determining that they had to leave then, they would have gotten to Capernaum safely and without the labor of rowing so far across the tumultuous sea. If you had waited for Jesus, maybe He would have provided the electricity money instead of having you borrow it. If you had let God lead you, perhaps instead of fighting with your child to get her to rehab, God would have led her there.

Are you waiting for Jesus or are you figuring it out your own way?

John 6:15

As I was beginning today’s Salt & Light devotional I was sidetracked by this quick message. I know it is for me, is it for you too? John 6:15 reads,

“Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.”

After the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus had gone to be by Himself. He did this often. He worked hard and ministered to many people but He also made sure to spend time with God. Jesus was in perfect communion with God, since He is God and He is the exact image of God but He still needed time when He could simply concentrate on that relationship. He was also giving us an example. If Jesus who was perfect benefited from time alone with God and rest, how much more so can you and I benefit from this practice?

Why are so many of us quick to say yes to every favor asked of us and spread ourselves much too thin in the name of Jesus, when Jesus didn’t say yes to every request made of Him and understood the importance of His own spiritual life and physical well-being. The world may look at you with awe when you work your fingers to the bone for others, but there is no honor and glory for God in those situations. It is you getting the glory. And if you do not understand when to say no you could been be contributing to someone’s detriment and taking away the blessings they might have experienced when they had to trust God to meet their needs rather than you.

John 6:1-15 Have Faith. Even with a Little, You Can Give A Lot.

John Chapter 6 Verses 1-15

You can always be generous. Even if you think you have nothing to give, God ensures you do.

Verses 1-3 read,

“After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.”

The narrative begins after Jesus had taught about His union with the Father. He went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. This is not something unusual in the Gospels. Jesus took time for Himself and the twelve disciples often, especially after a difficult or stressful situation. He would take a break from the demands of the crowds and refresh.

Jesus is our ultimate example of pastor and leader. He is the exact image of God. Since we long to be like him we should pay attention to His model.  We can tend to get busy quickly. Although Jesus had a lot to do in His ministry and had many people depending on Him, He took time off from serving them to commune with the Father and fellowship with His friends.

But Jesus didn’t begrudge the crowds, He loved them and so when He saw that they had found Him, He had compassion on them and wanted to give them the teaching they sought as well as meet their physical needs. He already knew what He would do, but He asked His disciples for ideas.

We face so many situations in life when we don’t know how something can happen. Jesus doesn’t teach us to worry, He wants us to have faith that He is our Jehovah-Jireh, and El-Shaddai. He is the Lord Our Provider and Our Almighty All-Sufficient God. Jesus asked Phillip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He didn’t ask because He didn’t know. He asked so that Phillip and the other disciples would consider the options and realize that Jesus was the answer to their needs.

Peter mentioned a boy who had five barley loaves and two fishes. He knew this was something and that Jesus could use the little bit somehow. But he didn’t know how. Perhaps he wondered if anyone else had brought food. If enough had brought food maybe there would be enough. Jesus and the twelve didn’t ignore the people when they arrived. They didn’t resent that their rest had been interrupted. They interacted with them, showed kindness, and got to know some of them. How else would Peter know about the boy’s food?

God consistently provides you opportunities to serve Him. You can recognize and embrace those occasions or you can resent them and miss your chance to demonstrate God’s love for someone and your love for God. If you are going to serve God ungraciously, He’d rather you not. He is always graceful, always loving and always compassionate. If you serve Him because you have to, your sullenness doesn’t demonstrate God.

Verses 10-11 read,

“Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.”

Although their earthly resources were limited, they used them. They recognized that it was from God and they thanked Him for what He had given. Jesus didn’t say, “Alright, Y’all everyone just take a bite cause we don’t have much.” He told them to take as much as they wanted.

2 Corinthians 9:8 reads,

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work”

When you give, God guarantees you will have enough to give. He wants you to be Jesus to the world. He wants to do good works. He makes it possible for you. If you only have $1.00, it will be enough to do good for someone. If it will take $10 or $100, God will make it doable. Had the disciples chosen to ignore the crowd and go buy food for themselves, God wouldn’t have provided for them. It was in the giving that He multiplied what they had.

And boy, did He ever multiply it! Verses 12-13 read,

“And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.”

Jesus made sure that nothing was wasted. Just because His riches are inexhaustible doesn’t give us the right to waste them. They gathered up all the leftovers and there was plenty left for people to take home and feed their families. Because they didn’t waste anything, the good work that was done could continue to work. Part of our recognition that all things come from God is that we are wise with His resources. Thankfulness involves using what we are given well.

The story ends with verses 14-15.

“When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”

15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself”

The good work Jesus and the disciples did resulted in people recognizing Jesus. When you do good works for Him, people will recognize Him as well. They will see Jesus in you, they will have to acknowledge Him. They didn’t get it quite right, but eventually some of them would. They were about to make Jesus their earthly king to save them from the oppression of Rome. So Jesus withdrew again.

God knew He needed some rest and the time came for Him to be able to take it. Jesus provided for the spiritual and physical needs of the crowd, and the Father met Jesus’ needs.

When you give cheerfully and lovingly, you can count on God to allow those works to thrive. And you can count on God to meet your needs as well. Don’t be afraid to use the little you have to do be generous. God does great things with those willing to let Him.

John 5:30-47 Is Jesus the Son of God? What Proof is There?

11/22/2014

John Chapter 5 Verses 30-47

Is your hope in being good? Is your confidence in doing good? Do you call yourself Christian and have evidence upon evidence to back it up? You visit the sick and imprisoned. You care for orphans. You pray with people on the street. You carry food and blankets to give the homeless people you meet. You rarely miss church, serve on three church councils, and you’re the head of the children’s ministry.

Some of those things may indicate your religion, but they do not reveal Christ in you. Jesus was still teaching after the Jewish leaders had become upset about Him referring to God as His Father. He was teaching them about who He is as the Son of God. Verse 30 reads,

“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

First Jesus told them He was here doing the will of God. Everything He did, said, and was occurred because the Father wanted it. He then went on to offer them proof that He is the Son of God if only they would be willing to hear it, see it and believe it. He said His word wasn’t proof but there were other witnesses to his authenticity. First there was John the Baptist. Verses 32-35 read,

“There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.”

John told people the Messiah was coming and once Christ’s identity was shown to John, He told everyone that Jesus was the Savior. But Jesus didn’t only have the testimony of a man. He had more evidence to the veracity of His claims. Verse 36 reads,

“But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.”

Jesus very actions attested to who He is. Not just the miracles. There were plenty of men doing miracles. Although Jesus’ miracles were different. They were varied, they were without pomp, and they were based on His own authority. Other miracle workers had to pray and use spectacle and ceremony to bring about the one type of miracle they could perform. But Jesus spoke with power and it was so. The works he was doing was everything leading to His death and resurrection for our redemption. His resurrection was all the proof anyone could ever need to know that He is the Son of God.

The third witness to Jesus Christ is God the Father. Verses 37-38 read,

“And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.”

Jesus told them although they’d never heard His voice or seen Him that if they truly had faith in Him, if they actually sought His will and purpose they would recognize Him. But instead of seeking God and His will through a relationship they sought to follow the law. Verses 39-40 read,

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”

Jesus told them they had completely missed the mark concerning God and His will. They tried to please God by glorifying the law. Instead they left out Love and ignored that God is Love. Jesus came in the Father’s name. He fulfilled the scriptures. He accomplished God’s will, His amazing love and the people failed to see He was God because they had exalted the law so high that it had become their warped god.

Jesus received His glory from God. The Jewish leaders, the Pharisees, and the councils received their recognition from people. People lauded them for their piousness, their generosity, and their amazing abilities to uphold the law. But to seek God means not wanting acclaim from men, it means seeking God’s desire and will. It means pursuing Godly love. Verses 41-44 put it like this,

“I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”

Jesus continued and told them if they truly knew the scriptures, even the scriptures would tell them He is Christ, the Son of God. Moses wrote about Jesus and the people refused to believe his words manifested right before them. Verses 45-47 read,

“Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Think about this. People use the Bible to hate. They use the Scriptures to try and disprove Jesus today just as they did when Jesus taught this. It is not preaching laws, rules, or morality to people that will lead them to the Truth. Jesus is revealed in you by your testimony, life, and Holy Spirit.

Your life changed when you were saved. That declares Jesus to the world. But it can’t stand alone and uncorroborated by your life and actions. Does your life speak to the change in you? Are your deeds and the purpose of those deeds showing God’s love? Is the fruit of love borne out in your life? Is the Holy Spirit in you, leading you, changing you, and flowing out of you?

When people see you, meet you, and speak to you, do they encounter Jesus? Or perhaps do they encounter a person who does good? Is it you or God that gets the glory when you do good things? Is your hope in Jesus or in your good life?

John 5:24-29 Life Comes through Jesus, the Judge of All

11/21/2014

John Chapter 5 Verses 24-29

Jesus continues to teach about His relationship to the Father in these verses. We ended yesterday with verse 24 but I want to go back and include it again with today’s verses.

Verses 24-26 read,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

Jesus is the only way to God and to Salvation. It is faith in Him, belief that He is who He says He is, (the Son of God), and submission to Him as Lord that allows a person to be saved, to pass from being one of the walking dead to being alive in Him. The Father is the source of life and He gave Jesus the authority to grant life where He will. He gave Jesus all judgment and He gave Him life.

Eternal life doesn’t begin the day our bodies die. Eternal life begins at the moment you demonstrate your faith by calling Jesus Lord. It begins when you hear His voice call you to life. But there is more to it. Jesus alludes to the Day of Judgment, His second coming. One day Jesus will return and all those who believed and died will rise up from the grave and meet Him in Heaven and immediately following all those who still live will be caught up and move from mortal life to eternal life in a moment. At that moment it will be too late for everyone else. They will see for themselves that Jesus is real, alive, and awesome. They will fall to their knees. But they will have to face judgment. There are no scales, no tallies, and no hoping they were good enough. They either were sealed with the Holy Spirit or they were not. Verses 27-29 put it like this,

“And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”

We do not know when that day will come. It might be this afternoon, tomorrow, ten years from now, or 156 years from now. But we do know it is coming. We read earlier that God loves people and wants the whole world to know Him and be saved. When Jesus comes, there will be no more hemming and hawing. When a person dies their earthly death, time to choose has ended. Do you love people like Jesus does? Do you love the Father so much you want what He wants? Is the Father’s will yours also?

The world is lost and doesn’t know it. People are searching for the truth and taking anything that sounds good to them instead. People need to see the truth of Jesus in you. One day He will be revealed to everyone as He returns to judge the earth. But right now He can be revealed in you.
