Read Isaiah Chapter 42
This Messianic chapter begins with a beautiful description of Jesus. It opens with the four verses we read yesterday and continues to describe Jesus and His ministry. This chapter describes Jesus ministry as triune. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all very involved in Jesus’ time on earth. They are one God, inseparable. Our walk on earth must follow and worship The Holy One and not leave any person of the trinity out. If we forget one, we worship a god that is not The LORD.
Verse 3 describes Jesus humility and gentleness.
“a bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.”
He didn’t see people of weakness or little faith and put that flickering flame out with cruelty, arrogance or shame. He encouraged. Remember the woman at the well? She had the beginnings of faith, and though her faith was misplaced, He encouraged her and led to the truth. He healed the broken. He built up.
Verses 6-7 read,
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
7 to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.”
Jesus is righteous. He is the new covenant. No longer do people endeavor and writhe under the slavery to law to be righteous. The Father called Jesus to be Righteousness and Truth. He put the Spirit on Jesus (Verse 1) and He opens the eyes of the blind, He reveals the truth to people. He brings people out of the chains and darkness of the prison of sin and law.
We too are called to be righteous. He will take us by the hand and lead us in the way. He keeps us too. This description of Jesus is a promise for us. We are not alone out there. He is with us, leading us, preserving and sustaining us. We too are called to be a light, open the eyes of the blind and free the prisoners.
Jesus makes it possible for people to be made new. It is a new covenant, a new way. He makes people new. He makes all things new. The one and only LORD sent His Son to be the Savior. Jesus is not a new god, He is God in fullness and worthy of all praise and glory. The LORD will not share His glory with another. Therefore Jesus is God, He is I AM, The LORD our Lord. (Verses 8-9).
He does deserve our praise and we are beckoned to praise Him, to proclaim His glory to the ends of the earth. We are summoned to tell the truth of Jesus Christ everywhere. We cannot forget the power and strength of God.
Verse 16 reads,
“And I will lead the blind
in a way that they do not know,
in paths that they have not known
I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I do,
and I do not forsake them.”
Jesus cried out for people to come to Salvation. We His servants cry out for the lost to find the truth. The Spirit takes them by hand and leads them in this new way to a relationship, not by following the law but by having faith in Jesus. The Lord makes the way possible. Jesus demolished all the obstacles that would keep people from Him.
Yet some people will not listen or regard The Word of God.
Verses 20-21 in The Living Bible translation read,
“You see and understand what is right but won’t heed nor do it; you hear, but you won’t listen.
21 The Lord has magnified his law and made it truly glorious. Through it he had planned to show the world that he is righteous.”
But rather than listen to God, instead of seeing His truth too many people refuse to hear or see Him.
When troubles come do you acknowledge and thank the Lord for them or do you stubbornly resist His discipline and counsel? Do not be like the Israelites and turn a deaf ear to God. They thought they were okay. They thought they could treat the Lord any way they chose and it was all good. The LORD sent them discipline, He sent them calamities, and He sent them prophets. But they were too stubborn to listen. They were too proud to depend on Him. What about you? Verse 23 says,
“Who among you will give ear to this,
will attend and listen for the time to come?”
God is actively working to bring people to Him. He is gentle, kind and encouraging to the weak and broken, but to the arrogant and stubborn He exerts His might and lets suffering melt their hard hearts.
