Can your god save you?
Read Isaiah Chapter 46
Verses 1-2 read,
“Bel bows down; Nebo stoops;
their idols are on beasts and livestock;
these things you carry are borne
as burdens on weary beasts.
2 They stoop; they bow down together;
they cannot save the burden,
but themselves go into captivity.”
These verses are a picture of gods and idols being carried on the backs of mules and oxen as the Israelites are taken into captivity. The gods slip and fall from the animals and the animals themselves become tired from the long journey. Neither the statues nor the animals can do anything to help the other, much less the people using them to transport their things.
But the One True God doesn’t need us to bare His burden, He carries us. Not only does He bare our weight and affliction but He bore us as well. He created us. Unlike the god which depended on us for its creation, which can’t move or stand without us, The Holy God of Israel creates men, moves men, and helps men to stand.
Verses 3-4 put it this way,
“Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all the remnant of the house of Israel,
who have been borne by me from before your birth,
carried from the womb;
4 even to your old age I am he,
and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
I will carry and will save.”
Our God is mighty! He loves us and we can depend on Him. We can lean on Him. When we fall, He lifts us up. He is The Lord God Almighty.
Our idols require us to sacrifice our money and time to create them, to keep them standing, and give them power that actually comes from us. Our idols become a burden to us. The career, children, wealth, celebrity, or ambition we have made god in our lives requires us to carry it and worry about it. It encumbers us and keeps us from the pure pursuit of seeking God first in our lives.
God doesn’t need any of that from us. He doesn’t drain he fills and sustains. He is not a heavy load for us to bear, He carries us, lifts us up and helps us in our times of trouble. He doesn’t sap our power, He is our strength and He strengthens us. He doesn’t need us to pour our resources or selves into Him, He provides for us and pours Himself into us.
Verses 8-11 read,
“Remember this and stand firm,
recall it to mind, you transgressors,
9 remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
10 declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
11 calling a bird of prey from the east,
the man of my counsel from a far country.
I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;
I have purposed, and I will do it.”
God is great! He has told us from the very beginning how things would work out. He is God. He is victorious over sin, death, and everything. What He has said, is. He has not changed and neither has His plan. Just like He sent Cyrus to rescue Israel from captivity, He sent Jesus to rescue us from bondage. Jesus will come again. He brings salvation and liberation. Verses 12-13 read,
“Listen to me, you stubborn of heart,
you who are far from righteousness:
13 I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off,
and my salvation will not delay;
I will put salvation in Zion,
for Israel my glory.”
Don’t depend on your career to save you. Don’t expect fame to rescue you. Your favorite TV show needs you more than you need it. Only God can save. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can break the chains of slavery to sin. Only the Spirit can glorify the Father in you and transform you to the image of Christ. Your god can’t do that. Your god depends wholly on you, but you can depend completely on The One True God.
