Verses 31-36 sum up the first three chapters of John.
Verse 31 reads,
“He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.”
Verse 31 reiterates, Jesus is the Son of God and Jesus is God. He is in authority over everything with God. Jesus is not like us, His plan is superior, His words are greater and His deeds are better. His ways are more elevated than our own. Verse 31 reminds me of Isaiah 55:8-9.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
John the Baptist could only tell people about earthly things. We can only testify to what we have seen. Jesus can attest to heavenly and spiritual matters because He is from Heaven, He is God and He is one with the Father and the Spirit. Verses 32-34 read,
32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.”
Most people didn’t believe or understand what Jesus said and did because He spoke and acted in a way that was so different from the norm. Jesus spoke and did God’s words and will. Everything that belongs to God, belongs to Jesus and Jesus. The Father sent Jesus and He gave Him the Spirit without any limit. Jesus walked completely in unison with the Father and Spirit and so He perfectly demonstrated God to us. He absolutely manifested God. When people recognized the truth in Him then Jesus could truly be God and forgive every sin and reconcile that person into a relationship with God, the Father, Son, and Spirit. Verses 35-36 say,
35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
The Father put the plan for our salvation in Jesus hands. When we believe Jesus, who He is, and what He has said and done, He gives us eternal life. He gives us salvation. And if we don’t accept the truth, then we have to pay the price for our sins ourselves. We can’t enter a relationship with God because God can’t remove His wrath from us while we have the burden of our sins on us.
Salvation is as simple as trusting Jesus is who He says He is. He is the Word and the Light. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is God in all His awesomeness.
