Psalm 24
The earth in its entirety belongs to the Lord. It is His as His creation and He is sovereign over it. Verses 1-2 say it this way,
“The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
2 for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.”
The righteous know we belong to Him, but the lost are ignorant of it. Those who know and follow Jesus remember they are His, but the lost are oblivious to Him. How do we acknowledge His greatness and His dominion? Verses 3-6 read,
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah”
Those who seek God and His righteousness are those with clean hands and a pure heart. Our hands are clean because there is no guilt on them. Our hearts are pure because there is no malice there. Not because we have never sinned, never hurt someone, or had an evil thought, but because Jesus laid down His life and rose again for us. Because He credits us with His clean hands and pure heart. And because He, the Holy Spirit gives us clean hands and a pure heart.
We seek God and His righteousness. We worship Him. He adores us. He gives us blessings and righteousness. He delivered us and makes us new. We seek Him and he reveals Himself to us. Jesus said it in Matthew 7:7-11.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
He is our splendid King. He came once to save us and give us His virtue, and He will come again to judge His world. Verses 7-8 read,
“Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle!
9 Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
What a description of our marvelous King of glory, The Lord of Hosts, Jesus our Deliverer. He knocks on the gates and on the doors to gain entry. He calls on the people of the earth to let Him in. Just as we seek Him, He seeks us. In Matthew Jesus described our knocking, our looking for Him. In Revelation 3:20-21 Jesus tells us that He actively pursues us.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.”
Can you imagine that? Our awesome mighty God wants us to know Him and be blessed by Him. He enjoys spending time with us. He wants to give us the gift of Righteousness, the joy of a full life, and the hope of salvation. When we open the door for Him we become conquerors with Him. Who is He, that He loves us so much that He wants to sit down at the kitchen table and spend time with us? Verse 10 tells us,
“Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah”
The Lord of Hosts. The Lord of Hosts can be translated as The Lord of angel armies. Jesus is the leader of the armies of angels. He is the Conqueror. He delivers us from sin. He waged and won the war on sin and death. He overcame it. One day He will lead the angel armies in the final battle and throw Satan into the pit of Hell. (Revelation 3:20). Who is the King of glory, our Lord of Hosts? It is Jesus, God the Son. He is described this way in Isaiah 9:6-7.
“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”
Jesus came and will come again because of the zeal, the passion and vehemence of The Lord of hosts. His zeal is for us. His power and strength are epitomized in this title. He conquered Satan on the cross and Satan will find out about it when Jesus returns leading the angel armies against him. The Lord will show him, his followers and the lost that this earth and everything in it belongs to Him.
