Verses 1-3 read,
May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
2 that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
When I read David’s prayer of praise and blessing I cannot help but see Jesus in it. It is a magnificent blessing. But without Jesus one cannot enjoy the blessings. Certainly it is about the Father’s love and graciousness. And His love and grace was perfectly expressed in Jesus. Jesus is the exact image of God. Jesus is God’s face shining upon us showing us God’s way which is love. He is described this way in Hebrews 1:3
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high”
It is up to believers to represent Jesus and let His way and His saving power be known. How can the world praise God, if they don’t know Him and all He has done? Jesus told us Himself that He wants us to tell them. Mark 16:18-20 reads,
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations ,baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Verses 4-5 read,
“Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
5 Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!”
God judges us with equity or impartiality because Jesus paid the price and gave us all the chance to be called righteous by His grace. Jesus is our perfect and worthy judge. Acts 10:42-43 says,
“And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Jesus is our Savior. He is the blessing, graciousness, and love of God. God is so wonderful and loving that He waits patiently for people to come to salvation. One day, there will be no more time, no more chances. The Day of Judgment will be here. But now He lets the world turn, He provides the rain, and the sunshine, and He keeps the world turning as He waits for people to come to Him. You and I are integral in expressing Jesus’ salvation. Verses 6-7 read,
“The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, shall bless us.
7 God shall bless us;
let all the ends of the earth fear him!”
You, Believer are the Lord’s blessing to the nations, because you are the one who can tell the world about Jesus. You have the Father with you, you are saved by Jesus, and you have the Spirit in you. You are the light of the world.
