Psalm 9
Verses 1-2 read,
“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”
Why should we thank God? What is it that have to be thankful for? Sometimes I know people don’t think they have anything to be thankful for. They look at their lives and see lack instead of plenty. But Believer, we have so much to thank Him for and so very much to praise Him for. Verses 3-4 read,
“When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before your presence.
4 For you have maintained my just cause;
you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.”
The Lord’s enemy and ours are the same. And in Him we have nothing to fear from Satan or his minions. God is just and He will send them to eternal Hell. And that is another reason to thank Him because he is a God of justice. And He judges with righteous judgement. We in His image have been given the ability to do the same. God doesn’t judge with bias or favoritism, and we should not either. He doesn’t judge based on what is apparent to others, He assesses the heart, the mind, and the motives. In John Chapter 7:23-24 Jesus told the Jews who accused him of being demon possessed,
“If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Verses 5-6 read,
“You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
their cities you rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.”
The Lord has warned everyone that they have to choose Him or Hell. And those who choose Hell will get what they asked for. On God’s timeline it is already done, because He said it will be done. Their names ae blotted out forever, as if they never existed. But for His children, those who choose Jesus eternity is very different and it is done! God’s enemy is our enemy, we win. We go on to eternal celebration and Sabbath with God and the enemy perishes. Jesus told the disciples who rejoiced over the awesome works they did in His name, “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:19-20).
Their name is forgotten, but ours is written in the Book of Life forever. And God our King is king forever. He is on the throne now and He will remain there eternally. He is Awesome Holy God, yesterday, today, and forever. He is our Righteous Judge, but we have nothing to fear because He gave us His own righteousness. Verses 7-8 read,
“But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice,
8 and he judges the world with righteousness;
he judges the peoples with uprightness.”
He judges righteously. He rules virtuously. He will not let the enemy harm us, or even touch us. When the enemy hurts us, it is because we invited him to do so, it is because we let him. Although bad things happen to us God is with us. The LORD God of Angel Armies fights for us and works everything out for our good, the good of becoming more like Him as we are meant to be. Verses 9-12 say,
“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his deeds!
12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.”
What do you have to Thank God for? He loves you so completely. He fights for you. He won for you. We may feel like we’re still in battle with the enemy, but He already won the war. Jesus said, “It is finished.” He didn’t mean His life, He meant that the war is over and He won. He won and we won. He is King of kings. We can trust Him. The enemy oppresses, but Jesus liberates. He is our rock and our Strong Tower in times of trouble and always, but the enemy is chaos ad loves to make more. God adores us. He thinks of us. He cares about us. Everything He does is for our benefit. We can cry to Him because He loves us. We can pray and know that He hears us and cares.
Of course we are in a reciprocal relationship with God. We don’t only tell Him our troubles, we thank Him and praise Him. We talk to Him and we listen as He talks to us. Isn’t that glorious? God talks to us! David prayed and David thanked the Lord for answering in the same breath. He prayed and He knew that God already knew his troubles and that our Just and Righteous God would do what was best. Verses 13-20 read,
“Be gracious to me, O Lord!
See my affliction from those who hate me,
O you who lift me up from the gates of death,
14 that I may recount all your praises,
that in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may rejoice in your salvation.
15 The nations have sunk in the pit that they made;
in the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The Lord has made himself known; he has executed judgment;
the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion. Selah
17 The wicked shall return to Sheol,
all the nations that forget God.
18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.
19 Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail;
let the nations be judged before you!
20 Put them in fear, O Lord!
Let the nations know that they are but men! Selah”
