“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”
The word used in this verse is hyiós. It means son by birth or adoption but it means more than that, it means the person (male of female) shares the same nature as the father. We share our Father’s nature. What is His nature? At its essence, God’s nature is Love, because He is Love. 1 John 4:8 says,
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
Of course we are not perfect yet, so we do fall short of perfect love, but since we are the sons and daughters of God and share His nature, we have the ability to love and we can live up to that.
Revelation 19:11-16 tells us more about His nature.
“Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
This passage tells us so much about who we are as sons and daughters of God. Jesus is portrayed here as Faithful and True. So we too are capable of being faithful and true, committed and honorable. He judges righteously. He cares about justice. The war He is fighting is for us and for the lost who could know Him.
He is The Word of God, God’s will manifested. We too have a part in bringing about God’s will, which is that we will make disciples, that no one will perish, and that He is glorified. (Matthew 28:16-20, 2 Peter 3:8-10, Romans 15:6).
He is the King of kings. That makes us royalty, it makes us kings and queens. Kings and queens are noble and confident that the words we speak are taken seriously. And what are the words we speak? We speak the word of God, the Bible, His will, and His message.
Being the sons of God also means we have an inheritance. Ephesians 1:11-14 reads,
“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
Our inheritance is eternal life in the presence of God now and in New Jerusalem for eternity.
Believer, you are the son or daughter of God. Are you living up to that? Are you honoring your Father and King by being like Him and expressing His nature? I encourage to embrace who you are in Christ. Be the gallant, faithful, loving, and righteous king or queen you were predestined to be.
